The change was minor, pertaining to initial conditions when the KPA500 is used at remote locations. If you get a chance, please load rev. 1.38 and verify that it is working well for all normal operation. Once we see a few more positive reports, we'll be going to production status on the K3, KPA500, and KAT500 beta firmware releases. If you haven't already loaded K3 rev 4.83 and KAT500 rev 1.58, I'd encourage you to do these updates as well. The difference between the new firmware and previous production releases is pretty dramatic, as reported by beta testers over the past several days. 73, Wayne N6KR __._,_.___ Reply via web post Reply to sender Reply to group Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (1) Visit Your Group* New Members 6 • Privacy • Unsubscribe • Terms of Use . __,_._,___ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

All three must be updated to take advantage of these major improvements to the KAT500 and KPA500. All known problems with unwanted re-tuning and faults have been fixed. We've also added a new feature that allows the KAT500's network settings to automatically track the K3's VFO frequency. The K3 will send frequency information over the K3's AUXBUS line, and the KAT500 will select previously memorized tuner settings as you move across the band, or when you “point and shoot” to work a packet spot. If you have any difficulty with the instructions below, please post a question to the Elecraft list, or contact customer support. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * Instructions 1. Download the new beta firmware for each device from the applicable software pages on our web site. NOTE: Follow the instructions for beta firmware releases when installing software in subsequent steps. 2. Using K3 Utility, save your K3's configuration. Then install K3 rev. 4.83. 3. Using KPA Utility, save your KPA500's configuration. Then install KPA500 rev. 1.37. 4. Using KAT500 Utility, save the KAT500's configuration. Then install KAT500 rev. 1.58. 5. (OPTIONAL) Set up the K3 to send VFO information to the KAT500: (a) Make sure the K3 and KAT500 (and KPA500, if applicable) are connected via the accessory cable. The AUXBUS line must be connected, as well as the four BAND lines, which we use to “qualify” the AUXBUS frequency data. If you've built your own cable and omitted the AUXBUS or BAND lines, you may need more wires for this to work. (b) At the K3, locate the CONFIG:KAT3 menu entry. Tap the numeric keypad '1' button (also labeled A/B). You should see “KAT500Y” or “KAT500N” with successive taps. Leave it on KAT500Y (the Y means Yes, send VFO info to the KAT500). Exit the menu. (c) Verify that as you tune the K3's VFO, the KAT500 selects the appropriate LC settings. This occurs after you *stop* moving the K3's VFO for about 1/2 second. You should hear one or more relays clicking at the KAT500 when entering segments that have different LC settings. 6. (OPTIONAL) In conjunction with the new VFO tracking feature, you may find it a good idea to “retrain” your ATU on 8 or 10 kHz boundaries on 160 meters, and every 20 kHz on 80 meters, particularly if the antennas have sharp SWR curves. (a) Use the KAT500 Utility, Configuration tab, Edit Configuration, Erase Memories to erase memories on bands that have sharp SWR curves (e.g. 160 and 80 m). (b) While you're in the Edit Configuration dialog, make sure the Amplifier Key Interrupt power setting is 1500 for a KPA500. If not, click Optimize for KPA500, then Apply. (c) Change the tuner's mode to MAN. In mode AUTO, the KAT500 will start a full search tune whenever the SWR reaches a threshold. If you're pretuned, that should be unnecessary and is probably undesirable. Mode AUTO is useful for remote tuners where it is inconvenient to press the ATU TUNE button when you need to. (d) Using exciter power only, perform a full search tune at 10 kHz increments on 160 and 20 kHz increments on 80 meters. Do this for frequencies where you don't want the ATU to enter full search tune when you next QSY there. This is best done by setting the K3's TUN POWER to about 20 watts, HOLD the K3 TUNE button to generate carrier, then tap the KAT500 TUNE button. It may take a while for a few settings, but often it will start close and won't take long at all. It depends on the SWR curve of the antenna on that band. (e) IMPORTANT: When you first visit a new frequency, the ATU will first snap in a setting from a nearby memory. It may be a memory you've used before with a different antenna. If the setting is inappropriate for the current antenna, the SWR will be high, and in mode AUTO, the tuner will need to retune, which requires more or less constant carrier, not SSB speech, not high speed CW. Just finished a QSO with J5UAP on 30m this evening and then switched over to 40m to pursue some more DX. When I got there, I wasn't able to get any power out. It showed 0.0W when I tried to TUNE (I have a remote tuner at the base of my vertical). I power cycled the radio and then received a multitude of errors upon power-up (including ERR IO1 and ERR PL1 among others). In addition to that, the fans were running (I have the 100w amp as well). I turned the radio off for a minute or so, and now the error has resolved. I've had the issue of the no power out when TUNE-ing in the past, but never this before. To: Elecraft Reflector Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Thursday, September 2, 2010, 6:48 PM On my P3, I notice that the little cyan cursor location does not align itself properly during a band change that also involves a mode change. For example, switching from 17 Meter band with USB to 20 Meter band with CW leaves the cursor aligned to the right of the center position as it would be for USB but not as it should be for the CW signal. All IF shift controls are in their normal position. Indeed, a power off and power on cycle of the P3 resets the cursor location to be correct. I figure if a power-off/power-on fixes a problem then there probably is a problem. Anyone else seen this same thing? If it is unique to my P3 maybe I have a very special P3 that might be worth a lot of money (sort of like an old stamp with a flaw in it). 73, phil, K7PEH K3 #3799, P3 #0030 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

No matter how carefully adjusted, the MFJ 1026 did absolutely nothing for my situation - too many different noise sources in too many different directions! Howard - what is your amateur radio call sign? 73 -- Don N4HH -- Original message from HowardZ howa...@howardz.com: -- Well Dave, I am not certain that a better radio will help me hear through the noise. A few weeks ago we had no noise at all for a few days - someone mentioned how quiet it was on one of the nets, but then a few days later the noise was back. Move 20Khz in either direction and the noise is gone, but we stay on target as they said near the end of Star Wars. It is rare for Mars to change freqs or switch to a digital mode. They presevere. The MFJ 1026 takes two antennas - gain needs to be adjusted so that both antennas have the same S-units of signal strength. Then one rotates the phase 0 to 360 to try to eliminate the noise. Supposedly this works well on noise coming from your home, your neighborhood, or even DX noise. I do not think this is what people call diversity receive. It is some kind of phase rotation to eliminate noise, though it does use two antennas. I don't know if the K3 or Flex has this function. The MFJ 1026 might be the lowest cost method for me to deal with the noise on this heavily used Mars frequency. Maybe I'll buy one soon? Then there is the Icom 7600 - it supposedly represents a large improvement over my existing Icom. Interfaces are identical to my existing Icom. Don't need to rewire my pactor 3 TNC for example. It has downloadable firmware I think. But its too new. There might be important hardware revisions in its first year if the radios fail with the initial design. This has happened with other Icom radios in the past. It's also not considered in the Perseus, Flex, Elecraft class of performance. I could get a Perseus, or some other receivers and use an Eldad T/R switch. This is lower cost than a new tranceiver since it's just a receiver - no transmitter. People rave about these and the Perseus is near the top of Sherwood's test list. I could rationalize that the K3's transmitter is no better than my existing transmitter, so why pay for a tranceiver? However this approach complicates interfaces to TNCs and sound card interfaces. But this choice does have merit. I could get a loaded Flex 5000 - it costs less than the K3 loaded since the Flex doesn't use all those roofing filters. People who own the Flex them love them and they are rated well. I have not used nor even seen in person any of these radios. However I prefer the K3 design approach over the Flex or Perseus. I don't want to ever have to say Sorry for the silence, I had to reboot windows - everything locked up - or I got that blue screen - I prefer a radio that has an embedded processor rather than a windows system. Turn it on - and it works - plain and simple. Yes, I'll hook a windows PC to the radio for digital modes, but at least voice works without a PC. And how many PCs can you hook up to a 12 volt battery during a power outage? Yes, there are ways to do it, but it isn't that simple. Then there are those wonderful dynamic range figures. Supposedly the Perseus, Flex, and similar designs have the same dynamic range no matter how far away the strong signal is. So, when the strong signal is 2khz away - they are all similar in performance. (K3 has the top spec, but with it is something called phase noise limited which doesn't sound so great - though I don't know exactly what it is.) But what happens when the strong signal is 50KHz away? Well, I think the K3 will have much higher performance the further away the strong signal is. But the Flex, Perseus, and others will have the exact same performance. I think that also applies if the signal is 1Mhz away, 10 Mhz away, 100Mhz away - you get the idea. I suspect they need a low pass filter to protect from a strong VHF or UHF signal. Anyway, I may be wrong with this logic, but I suspect the K3 is better in this regard. However, a strong nearby signal is not my current problem. A better NR, NB, or something to quiet down the noise is what I need. I currently have other options to try to solve the problem. The MFJ 1026 costs under $200. Maybe a beverage RX only antenna. I hear that an on the ground beverage antenna is very quiet. All it costs is 500 ft of wire to give it a try. Unfortunately I'll need to bend it to be a U shape as I don't have enough land to go 500 ft straight in one line. A better radio should also help - I think - not sure. Anyway - to get to your question. I think (but not sure) the Perseus and the Flex are finished modding their hardware - just the software keeps changing. If I really needed to take the plunge right now, a Flex 5000A with

Re: [Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems
Hi John - the front panel message FP.H b1 A5 really is FP. (means Front Panel Mic Connection) H (means high sensitivity) and the b1 A5 is just an attempt to write the word bias within the limitations of the LCD display! That is b = b, 1 = i, A = a, and 5 = s. You are not the first one to be confused with the b1 A5! This means that you have bias turned on and that is why you are hearing a noise from the mic. Turn bias off - this is done by tapping either the 1 or the 2 (not in front of radio right now) when you are in this menu mode. You might want to consider updating to the latest firmware. Hi Phil - not sure just what you mean here by take out the keying device and direct, it still keys. - but - if it's the Collins 30L-1, the keying circuit in it presents a negative (-) voltage on the key line - and - unfortunately - the K3 is set up to key an amplifier that presents a positive (+) voltage on the relay terminal. Wish the K3 presented a menu item so one could switch between negative keying (older amps) and positive keying but it looks like the MOSFET used will only key positive voltages. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Amp disable on TUNE request
Setting the Tune power via the menu does just that - sets the Tune power - the problem is that the key line from the K3 is activated - nice for tuning up the amp - BUT - NOT so nice for activating an auto-tune matching device (like an LDG or MFJ) so it can do it's thing without the amp on line. Of course, the work around is to put the amp in Standby, hit the K3 tune button, let the matching unit do its thing, take the K3 out of Tune, then put the amp back online - and - voila - you're ready to go! Well, you're ready to go if the amp is already tuned, otherwise, you put it on line and hit Tune again to tune it up into the now matched antenna - whew! Putting an item in the K3 menu to either implement or defeat this action might be just as button push intensive depending on the operator's intent - either tune the auto-tuner or tune the amp. Right now, all you can do is replace (overwrite) what you already put into that M1 - M4 specific memory. I've replaced a few of them with a single dit but really would like to be able to clear them completely like you can easily do with the other memories. As I've noted to Wayne, once the Digital Voice Recorder gets released, I suspect the ability to completely clear M1-M4 will become a hot item. RE: [Elecraft] K3 PSK31 VIA PADDLE
Hi Mark - the algorithm used in the K3 to convert what you send on the paddle (CW) into what goes out on the air as either PSK-31 or RTTY is VERY UNFORGIVING! If you are just a bit sloppy in using the paddle (and I am) the CW will be converted into gibberish for the fellow on the other end! This might be what is happening. You can see how well you are doing by watching the display of what you are sending to see if it really is what you intend. For example, you mean to send the letter h using the paddle and it sounds good to you - but - you look at the display and see something like e followed by s - that's what the other guy is going to see! So, you might try practicing (put the K3 in Test mode) with the paddle to see if you really are sending within the algorithm's ability to decode - you might be surprised that CW that sounds good to you just does not convert to what you want! One solution is to put a message into one of the M1 - M4 memories and send it from there - that seems to work just great for many users. 73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH K3/100/KRX3 #83 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark KN7T Sent: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 1:30 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 PSK31 VIA PADDLE I've used the CW to PSK-31 function and I've had reports from others that some of the characters being sent are chopped off and not displayed on the receiving end ??? [Elecraft] K3 MCU 2.38 Software Bug?
Basic Parameters: K3/100 with KRX3 - MCU 2.38, FPF 00.02, DSP1 1.90, DSP2 1.90 Main Board: FL2 = 2.8; FL3 = 2.1; FL4 = 400 Hz Sub RX Board: FL2 = 2.8; FL4 = 400 Hz AM Rx Enabled for FL2 Main and FL2 Sub AM Tx not Enabled I do NOT have a 6.00 AM Filter but am listening to AM through my 2.8 roofing filter - which sounds pretty good! Action: Set Mode to AM. Displayed Mode changes to AM and displayed XFIL changes to FL2 (which would be expected as I have a 2.8 in FL2 and it is enabled for AM receive) with High showing 3.00 and Low showing 0.00. BW shows 6.00. FC shows 1.50. Surprise Action - Possible Bug Now Tap XFIL button. Displayed XFIL stays on FL2 - but - bandwidth gets very narrow. High now shows 2.20 and Low shows 0.80. FC still shows 1.50 and BW now shows 2.8. But, the graphic display of bandwidth narrows to what would be shown if I had BW set to 400 Hz and the recovered AM audio sounds like it! The BW showing 400 Hz is as it should be since 2.20 - 0.80 is 400 Hz. Press and release NORM and I am back to where I started with Rx as it should. Even if I Normalize I and II so all is well and then do the tap the narrowing scenario repeats! What I've Tried: I've downloaded and sent All Firmware to K3 twice with the same result. I've used the K3 Utility Version 1.1.6.3 to verify the filter settings that I made in the Config Menu. I've used the K3 Utility to set the filters and verified them in the Config Menu. I don't know if this action occurred in previous versions as I've stayed up with all Beta releases but frankly never tapped the XFIL button before while listening to AM. Questions: Can anyone duplicate this seemingly strange action when in AM mode and tapping the XFIL button? If it can't be duplicated, any idea(s) what I've got set incorrectly? Is this simply a consequence of not having the 6 kHz AM filter and listening to AM with the 2.8? Thanks in advance. The ACC socket is referred to on page 18 of my manual as AUX I/O with the caution that this is NOT a VGA video connector! Well, it sure looks like a VGA connector but alas, no video output from the K3 - shucks! For those who just don't want to fabricate a cable, most commercially available VGA cables do not include the #9 pin and for some that do, the pin is not connected to anything. Poo! Fully connected commercial cables found! The first is a VGA Splitter Cable (Y cable) with one male and 2 female ends. It is offered by Cables Unlimited (www.cablesunlimited.com) and is their part number PCM-2250. Search this part number on their site. It is listed on their site for $14.99. All 15 pins are present and connected. This Y cable is carried by my local Microcenter (www.microcenter.com) and is their part number 028126. I bought it for $9.95. You can see it at: http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.phtml?keyword=028126submit .x=17submit.y=12 The second cable is a Fully-Wired Straight Thru, HD15MM cable with all 15 pins present and connected. The one I bought is a 3 foot Male to Male (although it is also available in other configurations) - no snickering! It is made by QVS (www.qvs.com) and is their part number CC388B-03. You can search this part number on their site. I don't believe that QVS sells directly to consumers but you can probably find their products at most computer stores. Again, I found it at my local Microcenter. It is their part number 810150. I bought it for $14.99. You can see it at: http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.phtml?keyword=810150submit .x=15submit.y=9 I've checked each of these cables and they do indeed have all 15 pins connected - at least the one's I bought do (caveat filed just in case they change their manufacturing process)! RE: [Elecraft] K3: ACC connector and cable
In an off list email, Brian (K3KO) was quick to point out that the description of the 15 pin cable that is shown using the link that I provided in my original April post clearly states that pin #9 is removed - and - it does indeed! I didn't keep a copy of what the link said in April, but, simply put, I went to the store in April, examined the subject cables, purchased them, took them home and checked them. The results of this examination are as noted in the April post along with the caveat that YMMV. Ordered 10/29/07, Katiegram on 4/9 and it arrived May 6, 2008. It is an assembled radio. I have just begun to set it up for operation. But I have run into an early problem. I'm sure it's probably my fault. I purchased a pro-set with the radio. Unfortunately, I get no output to the headphones when I plug it into the rear phone jack or with the front jack using an adapter. Furthermore, when the mike was plugged in it appeared that something was shorted because the transmit light came on and would not turn off. When I unplugged the mike the transmit light was not on. I'm not sure that I turned the bias on before I plugged in the mike. I have since turned the bias on but have not yet rechecked it. When the phones are inserted in the rear phone jack the speaker goes off but there is no sound in the headphones. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what stupid mistake I'm probably making? RE: Re:[Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems
I'm guessing here - but - it sounds like you might have the bias turned on to the K3 mic connector. Heil HC-4 elements do NOT require bias and putting bias on them will usually (have to file the usually caveat here as there may be some strange wiring involved) prevent them from working! Let's try this: 1. Tap - Menu (the display will probably show a number 6 on the upper line and LCD BRT on the lower line - at least mine always seems to come up that way if enough time has gone by since I used it last). Regardless of what the display defaults to, after you have tapped Menu do the following: 2. Rotate VFO B knob to until you see: MIC SEL on the LOWER line. The UPPER line will display the current mic settings: 3. If the UPPER line shows something like: FP.H(or L) followed by a space and then the word bias you have the bias turned on for the mic input selected (either FP for Front or RP for rear). 4. If the word bias shows up, then you do indeed have the bias turned on. 5. If the bias is turned on, then TAP the REV button (it has a red #2 in small print under it) once and the word bias will disappear. NOTE: The REV button alternately turns the bias to the mic connector on and off. 6. If the top line now shows something like FP.H with nothing following it, you have selected the Front panel mic input (the FP) and have selected high gain ( the H). You can change from H to L by tapping the A/B button (it has a small red #1) under it. On my both my HC-4 and HC-5 elements, I use the H setting and adjust the MIC gain accordingly. If the bias is not turned on, then all the above is not going to solve your problem. If this is true, the 8 pin plug on your mic is likely wired in some strange way. Please give it a go and report back. As usual, YMMV. I had the exact same problem with a MH2 mike when I first used my K3/100 SN 729 a week ago on 6 meters to contact a local friend who is a well-known VHF and HF DXer and contester. Unfortunately it did not make a good impression! There is a ground trace missing from one end of C98 and C97 on the front panel board. These capacitors are associated with the mike bias circuit. Hence the problem with the MH2. I am told that an official Elecraft fix is going to be released this coming week. Several of us who noticed this problem were given the fix to try and it worked three out of three times. If you must use a mike that needs bias then use the rear panel connector for now (i.e. Elecraft or Icom Proset). MH2s are excluded of course, unless you have an appropriate adapter. 688 is the earliest SN that we know is affected. The other three were 690, 728 and 729. Comments on why the ratings have so many unhappy K2 users? I went to the eHam site, too. Here's what I observed. The K2 has reviews in two categories under Transceivers, HF. With K3 compression to the max average power is about 8 Watts. K3 is a great radio but not in the transmit SSB mode. If Mic gain is adjusted properly so there is no distortion than the average power is even lower. I'm sure that this could be improved in firmware. If not than K3 would not be that good in the contest and Dx -ing on SSB Anybody has the same experience? I remember that Toby from Bavarian DX Club and some other guy was talking about SSB audio. I'm not complaining but I would like to have SSB signal comparable to radios like TS850, Ft1000D and so on. I hope that Elecraft will put this on their agenda. Beside that, K3 is superb TRX-the best. RE: [Elecraft] K3 TX EQ
Hello Paul - the TX EQ steps on my K3 are 50 100 200 400 800 1200 2400 and 3200. I've not looked at the FAQ Page but perhaps that was an early version and has since been changed and the FAQ ought to be changed to reflect current status. We can easily change these if something else turns out to make sense. Also note that TX EQ will be adjustable while in TX mode... As long as you're open to suggestion, I would strongly recommend using slightly different centered bands of 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 2400, 3200 Hz The lower limit of 200 Hz will not allow the user to optimize low frequency voice tailoring and adequate notching of the 150-200 Hz spectrum without sacrificing low-end content. As SSB transmit B/W narrows, articulation is significantly improved by narrow subtraction of the 150-200 Hz spectrum while maintaining adequate amplitude of approximately 80-100 Hz (assuming the K3 will pass this degree of low-end spectrum owing to the carrier set point placement through the crystal and DSP filters). The user could then accomplish this effect by adjusting the 100Hz and 200 Hz settings. Also note that unlike the current K3 band centers, when beginning with 50 Hz, each successive band increases in exactly one-octave increments. Thanks for your consideration! You must first enable the Tech MD menu item. Config == Tech MD == use VFO A to set it to ON == now use VFO B to locate TUN PWR == use VFO A to set power == tap MEMU -- Done. Now when you Push and hold XMIT to get to the TUNE function, it will provide the power you set - while there, you can now increase the power with the PWR control to continue tuning up your amp at higher power. RE: [Elecraft] K3/100 + DX4WIN N1MM
You know Gary, I have not done a very good job of covered all the bases here - sorry 'bout that! In order to avoid the scenario that I painted below, you could take a number of steps. For instance, in N1MM config, don't set RTS=PTT instead set RTS=Always Off, and at the same time, don't put a check in the Radio PTT via Command block. Then, the N1MM function keys will not cause the K3 to generate RF to the air UNLESS you have selected VOX on the K3 itself. The function keys will key the K3 so you can hear your messages but no RF will go out. If you've selected VOX on the K3, then the function keys will happily key RF to the ether and so will your paddle - embarrassing moment saved! Or, you could set the K3 Config menu item PTT_KEY to OFF-dtr and then RF would only go out if the K3 VOX was not set unless the N1MM Config was set so that the Radio PTT via Command box was checked. Nuff said! You get the idea and I'll bet there are a lot of folks reading this that are saying enough already or worse! [Elecraft] K3 Mic Menu,TX Equalizer Low Power Software Request
Maybe I'm missing something (if so, someone please straighten me out) or maybe some of this could be placed on the add to software someday list. Front and Rear Mic Selection: The bias settings for the Front and Rear mic inputs are independent. I can set bias ON for Front and OFF for rear (or visa versa) and as I switch from front to rear mic, the bias stays where I set it for the mic selected. This does not seem to be true for the H and L parameter. Set Front to H and rear is automatically set to H - set rear to L and front is automatically set to L - this parameter (Boost) does not currently seem to be independent. 1. Can this parameter setting be made to follow the selected mic input? TX Equalizer: Currently, when one sets the TX EQ for either the Front or Rear mic input, that setting automatically applies to the other input. So if you have very different microphones you may not only have to switch the Boost (that's what the built-in help banner calls H and L) but you also have to readjust EQ settings. As an example, my K2 Proset requires very different EQ settings than my Shure 444. One is on the front and one is on the back. It sure would be nice to not have to readjust the EQ each time I switch mics. BTW: the 444 works extremely well on the K3! 2. Can the TX EQ setting be made to follow the selected mic input? LOW Power Tuning: Having to use the rotary Power Control to reduce power for the purpose of initially tuning up an external manual tune amplifier and pressing the Tune button is cumbersome - not to mention remembering to do it! Some sort of scheme (menu item?) that allows one to select a Tune level (set to the user's choice) would facilitate this. Maybe something like - Push and hold Tune for 2 seconds to apply 20 watts (or the users choice), tap to exit - or - push and hold Tune for 2 seconds to apply 20 watts, then push and hold again for full power (what ever you actually have the Power control set to), tap to exit. I'm sure someone creative can come up with something better than this but you get the idea. 3. Can a low power tune function be implemented? Admittedly, these are convenience requests that simply would facilitate what I do how I operate. I'm guessing that there may be others that would find these options of value. What a great rig! I did use it for a while and was able to put the right code into the function buttons in the program to have it work - and - it worked quite well! Nice to not have to deal with extra cables! I also recall that after a lot of inquiries into other software possibilities, most developers didn't want to support that command set as it presented lots of issues with internal program timing and interrupting sequences within various routines (I'm sure that I've misstated that and someone in the programming arena will correct me!) Yes - thanks for jogging my memory Julian - it's been a long time since I tried it but you are absolutely correct - I could enter the KY commands in MixW with fixed messages and it worked fine - but - (ah, the proverbial but) was limited to canned messages. Never could figure out if there was a way to insert a variable within the text. 73 -- Don N4HH SNIP I use MixW and I was not aware that it directly supported K2 KY keying. The macros do have support for direct entry of CAT commands, and you can use that facility to send raw KY commands to the K2. Perhaps that is what you meant. It would allow the facility to be used to send fixed text, just like keyer memories, but you cannot insert variables from the log like the other station's call or an incremented serial number, nor is it usable to send text typed in real time. Because you are limited by the K2 protocol to how many characters you can send at a time, and must poll the buffer until it is ready before you can send more, you can't use this method to send very long texts. On the other hand, perhaps they have added support in a recent update and I wasn't aware of it? -- Julian, G4ILO K2 s/n: 392 K3 s/n: ??? Jack - I hope that Wayne and Eric contract with you to produce the panadapter for the K3. It should have that kind of functionality as well as at least a vertical line indicating the xcv freq and when split, both the tx and the rx should be indicated as well. Of course, a color display with the lines in different colors as well as a sweep hold function or at least a peak sweep delay of some sort. The ability to hook a large flat screen monitor would be very desirable as well. USB mouse port and no computer required. Just because the rig is small, it doesn't mean that the display has to be! Hi - I've had lots of responses to my original post - basically configuration questions and offers to buy the KDSP2, KAT100 or the KPA100 separately - but - no one has yet to commit to buy it as a complete package and I really, really, really don't want to disembowel my baby! I've got the K3 on order. So - here is the lowest possible price to keep it in the family before I consider parting it out or go to eham or somewhere else with it. NEW PRICE: $1025 shipped and insured in CONUS! Also forgot to mention in the original post that it also includes a set of Un's - I have not posted photos - it looks just like every other pristine K2/100/KAT100! RE: [Elecraft] SWR Question
Q#1 Constantly running the K2 into 3:1 SWR not a good idea. It will work (for how long?) but will work a lot better (and perhaps longer?) into a better match. Q#2 Yes, in all likelihood, the antenna tuner (antenna tuners do not tune the antenna - they just provide impedance matching between the rig and the load) will provide the needed impedance match for a near unity SWR. Q#3 The antenna tuner in the Icom 756 Pro III should handle the impedance match. At least mine will. Re: [Elecraft] need some help
Rich - Connect a cable with RCA male plugs on each end (typical audio cable from a stereo) from the Relay Out RCA socket on the rear of the KPA100 to the Antenna Relay socket on the rear of the AL-811 and follow the directions in the AL-811 manual to tune the amplifier up! Yes, the hookup really is that simple! If you DO NOT have the KAT100, then pushing the Tune button on the K2 will give you about 20 watts (if the K2 Power control is advanced to above 20 watts - it will time out in a few seconds) to start the amplifier tuning procedure. You can repeat this as many times as you need to to get the amp tuning in the ballpark - Since the AL-811 does not have an RF Output meter, perhaps you can use an external one to see how the power increases as you get close to the proper Tune and Load settings on the amplifier. Once you have the amplifier preliminarily tuned, then you can inject more rf from the K2 by pressing in both the Tune button on the K2 and the Display button on the K2 (button right above it) AT THE SAME TIME and adjusting the Power control on the K2. (If you feel comfortable doing so, you can start with the K2 RF Power turned down to about 20 watts and not bother with the time out feature of just pressing the Tune button as described in the beginning of this paragraph. Advance the K2's Power control until the amplifier is properly tuned as per the manual. If you DO HAVE the KAT100 connected then put it in the Cal mode to accomplish the same thing. Be CAREFUL when pushing the Tune button on the K2 as you can easily switch from Antenna 1 to Antenna 2! 73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH. - Original Message - From: kl7pb [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2007 8:03 PM Subject: [Elecraft] need some help I want to be able to run my AL-811 Ameritron Amp with the K2/100 . Re: [Elecraft] Microphones for K2
Hi Jim - I use my old D-104 with the original crystal cartridge all the time with my K2 and get great reports. No need for a preamp, etc. as the crystal cartridge has output to burn! The problem with using a nonamplified D-104 with the K2 is that the D-104 is a very high impedance mic and the K2 requires a low impedance mic. An amplified D-104 takes care of this by using the amp in the bottom of the mic stand to do the impedance matching - just be sure to take care in adjusting the volume pot in the base so you don't overdrive the audio input in the K2. If you don't have an amplified stand, just running the D-104 straight into the K2 will result in lots of drive but the audio will be very narrow and tinny - sort of like talking through a couple of cups with a tight string between them! The secret to using an unamplified D-104 into a low impedance is to put a resistor in series with the D-104 mic output (can be done inside the base of the stand) - something between 300K and 500K usually will allow the lower frequencies produced by the D-104 crystal cartridge to actually show up while decreasing the output to an acceptable level. A lot of us old timers put a 1 meg pot in series with the audio output from the D-104 cartridge (mount inside the base of the stand) and then adjust it for the best balance between tone and output while listening to the audio in a separate receiver. Do this and enjoy your veteran D-104! Have fun. 73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Continuing Serial (RS232, DP9) to USB Adapter cable
Sounds like you have all the bases covered Chuck and it must be very frustrating! Just for your information, I use an IO Gear GUC232A USB to Serial adapter cable (around $30) and it works flawlessly with the KIO2 on the K2. I'm using it with various software programs including: HRDeluxe, N1MM Logger and XMLog. Basically I just installed the driver, checked the Device Manager to see what COM port was assigned to it, plugged in my special Elecraft cable, set the software programs to the correct COM port and it's been running everything FB for the last couple of years. My laptop is a Compaq Presario 2500 with 3 USB ports and no serial ports and I use one of the USB ports to connect the GUC232A. There has got to be a solution to this problem for you. Re: [Elecraft] VFO A/B modes?
Agreed! If I could add only one item to the software, it would be that separate modes could be stored with each VFO. This does come up from time to time on the reflector but it seems there may not be enough room left to be able to do this. Sure would be convenient. 73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH - Original Message - From: Jim Wiley [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Chris Hurlbut [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, May 02, 2006 12:01 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] VFO A/B modes? Chris - I don't think there is a way to do this. I have wanted to do the same thing, but so far, no luck, Perhaps one of the future firmware revisions will include this feature. Like you, I also prefer to have one VFO on CW and the other on SSB. Actually, it would be very helpful to be able to have the last mode used on a band, together with which VFO was active, be remembered too. I am not sure how much storage room is available for that sort of thing in the software. I know it keeps the same mode per band... seems everything is per band if I read the manual correctly. Normally I keep VFO A on CW, and VFO B on SSB, on each band. Is there a way to do this without having to switch modes manually each time I swap VFO's? Like when I am on 7005 CW and go to VFO B, I'll be on 7185 CW, instead of LSB. Can this be done? Re: [Elecraft] K2 dimensions
No - approximate height of mine with feet is 3 3/8 plus a tad - total about 3 7/16 allowing for the screw heads - width almost exactly 8 (including screw heads) and (here is where it gets tricky) depth about 10 inches (+ or - depending on if you have finger dimple installed or not) from farthest front protrusion to farthest rear protrusion (end of bnc's) - if you have the KPA100, the SO-239 sticks out about as far as the BNC's - now if you plug in the key plug, power poles ( if you have the KPA100), KIO2 connector, etc, etc, there is more measuring to do! [Elecraft] Loss of Sidetone
Hi Bob - Lost Sidetone is fairly common. First: Please check that you do have the Sidetone Level turned up (Menu StLEditturn vfo knob to set number around 020MenuMenu) Chances are that your level is already adequate and increasing it won't result in your hearing it! Second: Select Sidetone Source (most common solution): MenuStLEditDisplay (note: tapping the Display button cycles the sidetone source between U6-25 (leaves you without a sidetone) and U8-4 (that give you back your sidetone!)MenuMenu All should be right with the Sidetone world again. If it's not something else is wrong! Either way, please report back to the reflector or you will continue to be deluged with mail! 73 es have fun -- Don N4HH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. How do I get to the DSP menu to bypass it (turn it off)? When I tap Display after I get the CF1 screen, I get the voltage and current display. What am I not doing? Or better yet, doing wrong? I should I'll try to find frequencies that fairly well avoid it, but I would prefer to stay +/- 5 kHz of the normal QRP calling frequencies, or on 40m around 7.109 in the much unused Novice band. I would like to switch over to 80m (3.560) as soon as it starts getting close to getting dark, which would be around 2200Z around here. I expect I should be on 30m quite a bit as well just to avoid more of the NAQP. I already made one QSO this morning (from in the den) on 30m.
