Most advice was to keep the power low - below 20 watts if I recall. As time went by, the power levels used on PSK31 have crept up and many operators are now using 100 watts or more. That kind of power in the narrow bandwidth of common PSK wattering holes will take over the AGC in the receiver because most are using bandwidths of 2.5 kHz or greater to see the full waterfall display. The AGC will respond to the strongest signal within the filter bandwidth and will make weaker stations more difficult to copy. Sometimes turning off the AGC will help, but concentrating on the station you wish to copy and narrowing the IF filter bandwidth will help even more. If you only want to work one station, there is no need to see the entire PSK31 band. Narrow the receiver filter and use the VFO to tune the desired station to the center of the IF passband. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/11/2013 6:13 PM, Ariel Jacala wrote: 5 watts on PSK will work if you are in an empty section on the waterfall. In a crowded situation with strong signals nearby, you will be stepped on and obliterated by the strong signal. Certain DX stations are notorious for overdriving the waterfall and wiping out other signals. You are better off calling CQ in location away from nearby strong signals. At 5 watts your printing on the waterfall can be faint depending on propagation. I did get Hawaii once on PSK with my K2. My luck with PSK has always been better at 25-30 watts. That is just the nature of this mode. At QRP power, CW is much more efficient. Make sure you have enough drive to just trigger the ALC circuit. You are also better off decoding the PSK signal with Fldigi or DM780 - just a better PSK experience with the macros and all. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie
Based on the amount of questions and topics there is three areas of questions/improvements/additions to the guide I would suggest updating, given the admittedly targeting of new/lack of experience hams 1) Digital operations. The how. What cable to hook where. The method of operation. Some of this In part, maybe outside the intention of the manual, but there is still quite a bit that should be added. Just look at the questions that are posted here and on KX3 reflector 2) The whole area of the AGC/filter/setup. (And this is really where the manual lacks info for the new owner/newbie in my uneducated opinion) Again the number of questions from both newbies and experienced hams make it evident that information needs to be enhanced (true some people will never read the manual, but at least one can be directed to it, if the question a raises) this is where I am truly still having issues. Some hams here talk about the menu option to decrease/increase the AGC yet us 'new' guys have yet the complete understanding of what the AGC is supposedly doing and what the menu changing actual does. 3) Power. Now admittedly I believe that has been covered in the manual appropriately. The questions still come. The differences between LiPo LiFePo4 as an example. I did ask the down to basic question and got some responses which I am still trying to digest. But as a side note and a related topic (and something that can be included in the new versions of the manual) is a section on travel. According to current US and international travel restrictions, what can and cannot be brought onboard. Yes they will change, but so will other items in the manual due to upgrades etc. Questions have been placed by all types of hams, on which battery can be carried on, side equipment etc. Again this may be not the high priority on the contents of the manual, but a truly nice to have. I truly believe that number #1 #2 of my list should be included/updated within the manual. #3 is a nice to have but based on the questions also something to consider And if it is not possible, what about a series of entries in the elecraft FAQ (my second choice) I will borrow someone else sig. Until that option is available, you will have to remove the batteries for re-charging (also the clock will be rest to zero when you power off). Newbies are welcome right here - ask away, and you will usually find a response in short order. The KX3 manual itself has a lot of how-to information in it. Re: [Elecraft] Newbie
While I agree about the various aspects of the Digital aspect. But a basic setup so one can cover what is needed to start is something that I believe would be an asset. Batteries is something that always come up. and an faq is probably more appropriate I will be reading the article and it seems interesting. But this is still something that I believe should be included as not only a general conversation, but a also specific aspect of the KX3 and its setting a 'kosher ham' Robert -Original Message- From: Matt Maguire vk2...@gmail.com Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2012 21:38:06 To: va3...@gmail.com Cc: Elecraft listelecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Hi Robert, Wayne said they they plan to beef up the digital modes section of the manual, so it will be interesting to see what information they put there. The challenge is that there are so many possible setups that it is just not practical to cover them all. Concerning your questions around AGC, Don W3FPR has written an excellent article on this topic, and you can find it on his web page: http://www.w3fpr.com/K3_AGC.htm I would question whether a detailed treatment of the different types of batteries available is really appropriate for a radio user manual, but it would certainly be an excellent topic for an FAQ article. 73, Matt VK2ACL On 07/08/2012, at 8:54 PM, va3...@gmail.com wrote: Based on the amount of questions and topics there is three areas of questions/improvements/additions to the guide I would suggest updating, given the admittedly targeting of new/lack of experience hams 1) Digital operations. [Elecraft] KX3 battery question again
First of all I know there have been 'hundreds' of post about this subject. And the truth been told, maybe I am confused because of that. So my 'simple' question is this I would like to buy a battery for the KX3 that fall into these 'requirements' 1) Needs to be allowed to be brought onto a plane, compact (carry on)? 2) I would like to run the KX3 at 12W on them. 3) Need to get a charger that keep the life of the battery going as long as possible (I assume it needs to trickle, balance charger) 4) And does not break the canadian bank(if one can also suggest places to purchase online? Hobbyking? Ebay, amazon to name a couple who do ship to Canada) Now there are lifo, Lifepo4, lead acid (not really to heavy) NIMH, squirrel, hamster ;-) etc I know that buddipole sells a A123 but they do not ship to canada (guess they are afraid we will take over the world, one battery at a time) but also they are pricey. And not sure if they are the 'right' type anyways So indulge my ignorance, and confusion on this, seemingly simple question. Like, I figure, most hams spend a lot of money that, at the end, is not the product they hoped for, (especially a newbie like me) I am hoping by reaching out I can at least mitigate some. Since you don't name your candidate and the Elecraft amp is not available to test, there is no way for anyone to be sure. There are probably some amps of good quality available, but more that are really for the CB market and not something you would be proud to put on the ham bands. Your financial condition is also important. Can you afford a dead end decision? My approach was to buy a Kenwood TS-480 which is a very nice offering. I made this purchase before the KX3 was announced, so my selection is not a judgement between the two choices. Of course, we have no definite information about how long it will be before the Elecraft amp is available, do how quickly do you feel the need of 100 watts is also important. Bottom line, it is a decision you will have to make because only you know your personal wants, needs and financial situation well enough. If you elect to go with a third party amp, please consider a high end offering. I doubt you will be pleased with the low end. Spend your money for effective communication and avoid all those nasty emc troubles in hotel rooms, unless you can poke a wire out of the window. BTW, you probably need permission from the hotel owner to do this. Loops are good for receiving using an external amplifier if you need to. You can get very good nulling of nearby noise sources. You only need simple wire loops, no fancy hardware. David G3UNA On 11/05/2012 16:09, Mike WA8BXN wrote: I too would like to hear the answers to this question! The thought is that one could test out indoor antennas in their own shack to see how various things work. Second thought, particularly with respect to small loops, I wonder if they would be useful to home use (primarily as a receive antenna assuming the presence of better outside antennas for transmitting) being easy to rotate by hand to try to null noise or QRM. 73 - Mike WA8BXN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

How well it works will depend on how well it is built (literally). The quality of the loop material and the tuning capacitor will determine the overall efficiency (and effectiveness) of the antenna. The buddipole in either the vertical or dipole arrangement will only come into its own when outside and away (to some degree) from interfering structures. I have had success with a tuned small loop indoors but not so with center fed or end fed dipoles. However they (longer dipoles) work well even a few feet outside the building ... eg. I used a bent up wire dipole made of invisible fishing wire suspended a couple of feed away from a balcony with thin bamboo poles ... it worked vy well on cw and PSK. 73 Jim, VE3CI Robert a 'kosher' ham Sent from my BlackBerry device __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Bernie, There will be many opinions, here are mine. There are many different antennas each with its pros and cons. You are looking for something quick. While I have no experience with the Buddi-Pole system it seems to me to be something that should not take a lot of time to set up. Maybe switching between different bands is the issue. A wire of reasonable length (and ground system of some sort) and a good tuner can switch bands fairly rapidly. Your length of 40 feet seems reasonable although other lengths may be a bit better depending on the bands you want to operate on. A problem with a wire antenna is putting it up and taking it down and the need for supports. If you can just toss it up into an available tree it could be a quick thing. If you try to get a rope over a tree and have to walk through nasty vegetation and things get tangled up it might not be so pleasant. Performance wise for a single band I really like a dipole. There are a number of ways to get multiband operation: traps, jumpers to use or isolate portions, and feeding with balanced line and use a tuner. I generally do my portable operation while camping at the same location for several days. Setup time is not so much an issue for me. While some may say having the optimal antenna is the most important thing I think there may be some other perhaps more important considerations for portable operation. One is picking the best band to use on a given outing. Getting a good feel for the bands at home helps a lot, as does checking propagation information. The best antenna you can put up for portable use might be about useless if there band conditions are poor on your band of choice. Once you have a decent antenna selected and have picked a band that will be open the important thing is good operating. One CQ may not get a contact. It could take some effort and time. Bottom line, do planning on what band to use, pick a simple wire antenna, spend a reasonable amount of time and you will get contacts! It's like a bunch of kids in a candy store! Can't blame you! I know how you feel, since all my other Elecraft rigs have pretty low serial numbers, except for back-up K2, which is a much later model. Even though I'm fairly high up on the KX3 order time line, it looks like my KX3 is going to have a pretty high serial number. That's O.K. though, providing you early owners are diligent enough to report any early production glitches! I'm not sure there will be that many, but be diligent nevertheless! I'm kind of curious as to how many KX3 owners are also first time Elecraft owners. Seems like, based on some of the conversation, it's a fairly high number. I don't know exactly what to attribute that to, but I suspect more than a little of it is due to the success of the K3. Seems like a lot of folks are viewing the KX3 as a poor man's K3, and perhaps rightfully so. The unique versatility of the KX3 has also drawn a lot of attention from those who previously thought rigs like the FT-817 and IC-703 best suited their preferences. It isn't going to take them long to realize they got a whole bunch more than just a new and improved portable radio! I honestly think this radio is going to mark the beginning of a whole new way of thinking about size versus capability. There are already rumors about a KX3 look-alike from China. Ten-Tec has a new QRP radio in the works, and a small amp as well. I've even worked someone with a prototype. Isn't it interesting how many manufacturers are following the lead from Elecraft! Look what happened with the down conversion architecture. Ten-Tec may have actually initiated it with the Orion, but Elecraft really went a lot further in trying to perfect it, and made it truly successful--mainly because they support their radios better! I don't minimize the fact that some other manufacturers are rolling out some very nice products, but I know I'm having a bunch more fun just watching the Elecraft line progress. This is where most of the real innovation seems to be occurring. Stated differently, other manufacturers seem to be in a mode of mainly upscaling their products--adding features to make their next model somewhat more attractive. Elecraft, on the other hand, seems more innovative. I think I know why that is, at least to some extent. The designer/engineers and Yaecomwood sit around and think about how to add fins, or a bigger engine, like Chrysler--maybe throw in a new twist or two, like a bandscope, and more button versatility. That's good! However, Elecraft folks think about how can we make the radio perform better--even at the top of the scale! That's what led to down conversion, incorporating powerful versatility and upgradeability through firmware enhancement, enhanced DSP capability, etc. It's not about adding more buttons, but instead, adding more technology. That may sound like an overstatement, but I defend it by pointing to the fact that other manufacturers are seemingly adopting the Elecraft approach in many instances--but after the fact! The other big innovation is in SDR stuff, and the comparison is most intriguing. The KX3 is a perfect example of this. It's a total departure from where a lot of folks thought Elecraft was going. There was all this talk about a K4! Surprise! Elecraft looks for niche's in the market, and then fills a perceived void with avengeance. The KPA500 is another example of that. There are a plethora of 1 KW+ amps out there--and darned good ones--but few in the 500-700 watt range. For many, that's more than enough extra oomph, and technically, it covers the best part of the cost/benefit curve. Plus, it opened up new opportunities like offering the KAT500 as a matching accessory. I just think the whole thing is fascinating! Clearly not everyone will agree, not even with my premise, but I think it has merit. RS232 needs to be isolated from KX3 PTT and KEY. An external unit is what looks practical and will need the proper connectors: 1) Four contact mic connector w/ suitable length cord 2) ACC2 connector (if used) 3) standard 3.5mm phone jack for soundcard interconnect (get that from RS) 4) breakout of serial cable RTS line and DTR line 5) connector for KX3 KEY jack. 6) transistors to isolate RTS and DTR 7) resistive divider (pot) for setting Tx audio level 8) miniature pcb isolation transformer for audio A simple interface can be made very tiny using sm components, though may be more than will fit the standard DB9 (9-pin subD) jack shell. I'm giving some thought to manufacture such an item, but I need to receive delivery of my KX3 for development. What would folks like this to look like? I have read carefully through the KX3 Preliminary Manual but I have not found any information about isolation of the input and output analog signals. I therefore suppose that the KX3 does not have any isolation on these ports, however on page 18 the manual says that you can connect the computer audio to the MIC jack and the KX3 phone jack to the computer's audio input. [Elecraft] Plugs
In one of the previous notes from Wyne, he mentions that maybe Elecraft would end buying a bulk, good quality set of plugs that can be ordered (instead of talking one's chances by order sight unseen) Is there a possibility that they can be put on the order page and then shipped with the new KX3. Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500/PPT Headset
I did order the mic MH3. But I am sure when I am home, the cats and wife would rather not hear the chatter. So therefore why the need for a headphone I am so new that 'I don't know what I don't know' So I need a 'pigtail' adapter and a pTT cable/switch I don't want to wait a second when I get the KX3, which I would if I don't figure this out and am stuck at home and have the 'chatter restriction' (IE cats/wife) ;-) --Original Message-- From: Ron D'Eau Claire To: va3...@gmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500/PPT Headset Sent: Feb 19, 2012 17:03 The only dumb question is the question not asked! If you want to hold a PTT switch in your hand, you might consider the MH3 microphone that has built in PTT *and* frequency up/down buttons that allow you to tweak the receive frequency without touching the KX3 itself. A hand switch to work with the CM500 would require some sort of adapter as others pointed out. The KX3 uses a four wire TRRS mic connector (tip, ring 1, ring 2 and sleeve). Connecting the rings together puts the KX3 in transmit. That's why you must disable the PTT operation in the KX3's MENU if you plug in a mono mic connector such as the CM500 or the ProSet have. Otherwise the two rings short to the sleeve in the mono jack and the KX3 will transmit. 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: va3...@gmail.com [mailto:va3...@gmail.com] Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 2:39 PM To: Ron D'Eau Claire; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500/PPT Headset Oi so no need at all for PTT with the CM500 I am bad Thanks And if I want a hand switch etc? The MH3 has a matching plug. However, the mic jack can also be used with mics having a 3-circuit (stereo) plug. These will not provide PTT or UP/DN controls, but can still be used with VOX or the XMIT switch (equivalent to PTT). Two menu entries are provided for mic configuration: one to turn bias on/ off and another to turn the UP/DN buttons on/off. Heil headsets with two stereo plugs (one for stereo receive audio, the other for the mic) can be used. Generic computer headsets with these two plugs will also work. There are very small, pivoting mics available from places like Fry's that have a 3-circuit plug. Re: [Elecraft] Dust cover for the KX3
I would not purchase the paddles. I want to use the money to purchase the battery pack etc instead 73s --Original Message-- From: Rose Sender: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] Dust cover for the KX3 Sent: Nov 28, 2011 15:06 I've been working with Wayne at Elecraft on a dust cover for the KX3. Prototypes have been sent back and forth, and a design is almost finalized. The paddle assembly will be an option, and I'd like to know if there are those who would -not- purchase the paddles, and therefore would not want an opening in the cover for them. We'll address a potential padded case next. It's a complex issue, with many concepts of what extras might be added over and above the KX3. Stay tuned, and 73!
