Besides, this is something that is clearly broken. There is absolutely

I agree, since the left/right stuff is only dependent on the page

This doesn't sound Finale problem. I assume you are on Mac. If Finale

and see if your device is active, and use Check Connection to make sure
you hear notes.

What is your interface?
Do you have latest driver?
If USB, is it on a hub?
If Hub, is it powered?
What is your host CPU?

Is this a preference's thing? Because I've had trouble with Finale
forgetting them when I open it by double clicking on a file. Don't
know if it's related but I've programmed Finale's start-up action be
the launch window. But it never opens when start Finale.

I found Finale pref to be somewhat unstable, not to mention they are
using legacy binary file and com file. It seems Save Pref on Quit is
somewhat unreliable so I often Save Pref manually. Even with this,
Finale forgets default window position often.

[Finale] FinMac 2006c copying behaviour between files

2006-01-18 Thread Christopher Smith
Thought this might be useful to anyone trying to decipher the new
copying behaviour when you try to copy things from other documents. I
thought it was so great, but there are still problems.

I was reconstituting the score that I lost from the File Overwrite bug
bite, when I realised that none of the double bars, nor the repeats,
were copying to the new document. I tried just about everything except
clip files (drag and drop doesn't even work any more between documents,
as it did in Fin 2005) various setting of command-C, command-V, but
nothing I did could get those things to copy.

According to tech support, there are some things that will not copy
between documents. Hit (on Mac) command-shift-V when pasting to find
out exactly will or will not copy. Most of the Measure items are greyed
out, totally unavailable, though all Entry Items except Tuplet
Definitions are copyable. Available Measure Items are:

Measure Expressions
Note Positioning
Smart Shapes (assigned to measures)
Split Points
Staff Styles
and of course the clef copying option still works.

This means, no repeats, no barlines, no key sigs, no measure regions
(it doesn't exclude them specifically, but I gleaned that), no
measure-attached text blocks, no time signatures, among other items
that I didn't think were so important.

So we still need clip files. The old system of copying to a clip file
(Mac opt-cmd-C), then INSERTING from a clip file (Mac opt-cmd-I) before
a selected measure DOES copy all those items we are missing. I haven't
done an exhaustive test, but barlines and repeats worked, and nothing
was out of the ordinary that I could see with a cursory glance.

depending on the app developer. For example, Acrobat gives you
everything you need on the initial pane.

OK, but 99% of the applications I use do exactly the same as Finale, so
it is obviously the Standard way to do it. Look at Safari.

Firstly I have completely given up on feature requests (you and I know

Thanks for your input Hiro!

I think you're right, it's not a Finale issue. I seem to have had

straight into the computer, no hub. Though I need to get one.

Being computer illiterate I don't know what host CPU is! I'll see if
there's a newer driver.

I did get it to work yesterday by fiddling with the midi/select
controls on the Radium, god knows which ones , I kept pressing the
reset and midi channel keys. But sure enough this morning, same
thing. Nothing un-plugged or changed and yet it didn't work. Took me
another 1/2 hr of fiddling and presto there it was. But it seems like

How do you insert without a clip file? When I choose Copy and Insert

What is new is that drag and drop between documents is now disabled,

Your last backup was that long before? This bug couldn't possibly overwrite
all previous files?

I've never been bitten by this bug (I'm on 2K5), and crashes and other
problems rarely take out much but the last few minutes of my work --
because I always follow Dennis's Safe Practices and I really, really,
really, REALLY recommend them. :)

It may seem like extra steps, but I don't recall having to recover a
damaged Finale file since a giant screwup in the file structure in of a
long piece back in 1994. (I had to go into the ETF version and hunt down
the sequence of measure entries. Very much not fun!)

So I follow these rules...

1. Turn a program's automated backup OFF.
2. Turn a program's backup-when-saving ON (not necessary, but a
stupidity-safeguard).
3. Create my first file of a project with 001 in the name (such as
HighBirds 001.mus or RFID Predictions for 2006-001.doc).
4. At every thought-pause, do a Save As..., incrementing the filename by
1. (The thought-pause save is second nature now. In 11 keystrokes*, I've
created a safe harbor for my work -- and a running history if it's
something I'm composing.)
5. Save all documents, exit the program, and restart it.
6. Re-open the document and Save As..., incrementing the filename by 1.

In Finale, I add these additional safeguards:
1. At every major revision or addition point, do a Data Check for deleted
items and document integrity.
2. Then Save as... under the next incremented name.
3. At every major stopping point (dinner, sleep, Scotch), exit Finale and
delete everything in the TEMP directory.
4. When extracting parts, immediately save the parts and score under new
names (not just Finale's names), exit the program, and re-open everything
to begin actual work.

(Nightly I back up to an X-drive as well, operating system, programs, and
all my document files.)

None of this takes more time then lifting the cup of coffee that's always
on my desk, nor getting another cup. But right now I'm starting a backup
because we have heavy rain high water. Ouch.

I had only worked a day on it since the last backup. It was a
revision/re-orchestration of an existing work. It was faster to
reconstitute the score from the parts (about an hour, not including
screwing around with copying experiments) than to do the day's work
over again (it was a really long day!)

I saw your method, and have resolved many new years in a row to do

I have all the benefits of Dennis's methods with ZERO EXTRA
KEYSTROKES.

I use an undelete program that runs in the background, and protects
all deleted files on my computer from overwrite until a certain
amount of space has been used up on each drive volumne.

I also see no point whatsoever with Finale in turning off the
automatic backups (unless you're annoyed by the interruptions), since
it does not endanger your data at all, since it saves under a
different file name, not to the existing filename.

The result is that I have 3 complete runs of all versions of my file,
the Autosave version, the backup version and the main MUS file
version. If the one for the time that I'm trying to roll back to
lacks information, it is likely in one of the other two versions.

I cannot recommend this kind of software strongly enough. It does
what computer software *ought* to do -- performs a task for you so
that you don't have to worry about it.

I use Executive Software Undelete, which was bought by Diskeeper in
the last year or so. Norton/Symantec used to have a protected
recycle bin but I found it not as useful as the undelete software
I'm using now, and came with all the problems that Norton/Symantec
software tends to have (a real drag on system performance, multiple
software dependencies).

Again, I just can't see why anyone would choose to do this manually.
I certainly have my own manual backkup procedures, but it always
seems that I forget to do them right before something catastrophic
happens. Undelete software protects you from your own mistakes while
also eliminating the extra work of maintaing the history yourself. It
also releases the disk space back for use according to your own
settings, whereas Dennis's method requires manual intervention to
clean out the no-longer-needed incremental versions when a project is
completed.

I just can't see why anyone would not see the virtue in such a
system. It's saved my bacon many times, and requires no thought or
extra effort on my part.

The only caveat is that I've found that after a few years of use, it
needs to be re-initialized, or your system can drag to a halt
maintaining all the ancient undeletion information.

I am not crazy about Canon especially their support. HP is much easier
to deal with. Two of my students have had problems with Finale, namely
Finale wants to have Cannon selected per file's page setup, or printing
speed slows down drastically. One was i560, and the other was ip3000.
They also won't print off AirPort, while HP does.

I like HP as a company, but I just bought Epson R220 only because there
aren't other option for printing on CD. Boy this printer is an ink eater!

I have one. It chews up ink rapidly, and its output is average.

I also have an HP 1220 (12x19, old and lower resolution, very poor paper
handling), Epson R200 (very nice), an old Xerox P12 laser (very durable and
takes abuse with all sorts of stock), and a Brother laser in a box
(acceptable as a backup; it was a $99 closeout, and has good paper
handling). I've burned through four other HP inkjets and would never buy
another HP, though I hear their lasers are better.

The Epson is my favorite inkjet so far, with great paper handling and low
ink costs (it uses a lot of ink, but it's cheap in bulk).

Re: [Finale] O.T. Inkjet printer recommendations?

2006-01-18 Thread Mariposa Symphony Orchestra

I have a Canon Pixma iP4000 and am very pleased
with it. Its score and parts output is fine -- not
anythingextraordinary, but for an inkjet I'm very
pleased. The carts are prettyinexpensive and the color
carts are individually replaceable, which is a nice plusand the speed is
GREAT!

My previous most-used printer was an HP
(Photosmart 1215) and it was very unreliable - among other problems, the
connection was constantly (and suddenly) lost. I replaced the
cablemore than once but the problem never changed. The
only solution was to restart the computer and that would be a little annoying if
in the middle of a large job. And after another part or two, the
same problem might emerge. Changed drivers. No
solution. When I upgraded to XP Pro, the HP 1215 began to have
a number of erratic problems and even after I found and downloaded a new driver
claimed to be the solution by HP, things only got worse. I
ultimately found many references (though apochryphal)which perfectly
described all the symptoms of my troubles. The upshot of
all the references was that the HP 1215 - though a relatively recent model - in
many cases simply was incompatiblewith XP. Whether it
was a decent printer aside from the ongoing battles between it and the OS:
dunno. I replaced it with the absolutely trouble-free Canon and have
been really happy with the results.

For an all-in-one I'd go with the Canon Pixma MP780. It does duplexing,
has an ADF and is top-rated all around. For a stand-alone scanner I'd go
with the Epson 3490.

2006-01-18 Thread A-NO-NE Music

One last word on this subject.
In my experiences, both Canon and Epson support for Mac is not as good as HP.

My ancient HP 5MP is still kicking on both Mac and Win. Epson 850N,
which I paid a lot for Ethernet capability, doesn't have Tiger driver,
and they don't care. Canon ip3000 Mac problem, we received poor support.

When I complained HP not releasing OSX driver for my scanner, they sent
me a new model for exchange at no cost. I was deeply impressed.
