Re: [Flashcoders] Adobe Flash future
I think the fact that this list is pretty inactive says it all. I'm freelancing at an agency right now who I make AIR apps for. I used to make a lot of them for a few years, but recently I think they are looking more and more at html5/js solutions. A few years ago I used to make Flash websites for them, but never any more; then I made AIR apps, and now that seems on the slide... it's a shame for all the reasons we already know. The only other work I get with Flash is the occasional banner ad! I'm sure there are still some niche areas for Flash, but largely it feels dead from where I sit. I have made loads of AIR apps for tablets and display stands. They are not for public download, they are all for marketing events that guests at an event use or trained staff use. I use Flash CS5.5 and we normally use Samsung tablets as compiling to Android is so much quicker and easier than to iOS, and it is easy to pull data off the device. The company I work for on those apps is really happy with the speed and flexibility. I would love to work on an app that was actually available in a store to download by the public. Having said that If I am also looking at web apps and experimenting with jQuery Mobile and CSS media queries, and I try to avoid flash when making websites. Re: [Flashcoders] MVC style Correction
Hi all, Really pleased that my original question has generated so much positive discussion, debate and learning on MVC. For me it has certainly shed some light on different ways to implement it and probably some improvements or different approaches I could take in the future. Currently I connect them all together exactly as Ross has his set up in his first example. Although I may experiment with some slightly different approaches or try out a framework. Re: [Flashcoders] Flash Platform roadmap released - time to start learning HTML 5 unless you make games.
I have pretty much given up on Flash for websites or web applications. I have two kinds of clients: small clients who want a portfolio website or something similar scale, and then the agency clients where my work is all marketing work. Marketing people are o b s e s s e d with iphones / ipads and facebook so if it doesn't play nicely with them then forget it. I used to make Flash websites or Flash elements on websites for marketing agencies but since about two years ago I have not done anything web-based for them, it is all AIR apps for desktop and tablets. I actually prefer making AIR apps than websites. Reluctantly accepting the need to move on I am learning JS (which feels like going back to AS2) and brushing up on my HTML CSS, I'm also learning ModX framework for building content managed sites. I'm pretty sold on ModX. Small clients always wanted a CMS but could never cough up enough for a bespoke system and I never found one that worked with Flash so had to use XML files, which most clients found difficult to manage themselves. So getting a backend framework has been a positive from this; and making AIR apps which I wanted to do before AIR ever existed and I made projector files. But otherwise I am disappointed the way it is unravelling for Flash. I'm sure Adobe could have handled the media better on this. I was at an Adobe HTML 5 conference last year and they definitely see HMTL 5 for all web stuff, and Flash for apps and gaming. That roadmap seems to suggest it is very game heavy. I don't really play computer games and I haven't made one either so not sure how I feel about that. For what its worth I really like AS3 and I hope it stays, if Flash dies on the web though then there is no hope of JS getting an upgrade to be like AS3 as there will be no competition, no incentive. I'm off to do some banner ads... (seriously!) You can even do the same for iOS - in fact many folks using Flash CS5.5 are doing this to get at the interpreter builds in AIR 2.7 for iOS (since they compile so much more quickly, and can't be built from the GUI). Ha! Not too many. I took my iPhone to stay in touch with family and friend's through email and facebook. RE: [Flashcoders] Facebook API GetPhotos not working
Thanks for the suggestion Steven. I've spent a week trying to work with Facebook and the best I have managed is an AIR app using the actionscript-facebook api with AIR CONNECT. I can successfully log in and allow extended permissions and upload a picture from a webcam. I'm reasonably happy with that. Although I can't seem to grant regular permissions to access a user's photos. Do you know how this is done? I have had a quick go with Graph API (just making URLLoader calls and ignoring the actionscript api) and I can get an access token but I'm getting errors trying to grant access to user_photos as I'm not passing a redirect_uri as a parameter. But as its an AIR app I don't want/need a redirect so what should I be doing? Do I need to switch this back to a web based app rather than desktop app to use this method? In which case logging in might become an issue again! I'm pretty fed up already after 1 day of going in circles. I looked through bug 146 before but i am going back over it again. It seems I need to extend my permissions and add user_photos but after reading through 6 pages of docs on this I'm still pretty confused! Even in the docs they are mentioning the migrations tab and enabling New Data Permissions but this option does not exist! I'll re-post if I get anywhere or run into new difficulties, or just give up! Thanks Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2010 23:05:25 -0300 Subject: Re: [Flashcoders] Facebook API GetPhotos not working From: califa010.flashcod...@gmail.com To: flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com It's most likely a permissions problem. Even if your pics are public, you (as a user) have to grant the app access to your data (except for the most basic stuff such as name, etc). This wasn't necessary before, if I recall correctly, but alas, FB API is rather unstable. They seem to change their minds about how things work all the time (and are not afraid of breaking the code of the suckers that use their services; you can get away with it if you're facebook, I guess). Check this out: http://code.google.com/p/facebook-actionscript-api/issues/detail?id=146 How do you ask the user for permssions? This doesn't have an easy answer, I'm afraid. It depends on how your app connects to FB. I've used the official AS library above in one project and I know it's actually a wrapper around a JS library. Don't remember the specifics, but I do remember that in all of the client libraries I used (the old JS client, the new JS client that uses the new Graph API and the PHP client), you can request a check for permissions when you call the login function; and if said permissions were not granted, the user will be presented a popup to accept or deny your app these permissions. So you have to look up what's the name of the permission (whatever they decided it to call it this week) and how you can pass that to the JS code that actually connects to FB (I think there was something for that already in the AS library, but I'm not positive). This should solve the problem in most scenarios, I think there are some cases not covered here, such as if the user is already logged in when they get to your app; the login method won't be called, so the user won't be asker for the necessary extended permissions; if they already grant your app these, no problem; if they don't or they revoked them, you'll have to work around this somehow. I remember I had to do this a while time ago (using the new JS client for the Graph API), but it was a mess, and involved using FQL from JS and whatnot... (all this because there's a very useful method in the FB API that returns the user status, but they forgot to include the current permissions granted by the user in the response; so you have to find other way to get that data, which in my case was using an ad hoc SQLish language called FQL. -- Sorry, this last paragraph was mostly a rant; developing against the FB API is a bit frustrating at times...) An alternative approach I used (but only because I had to use the new Graph API) was doing something similar to what this guy did: http://wellconsidered.posterous.com/fbflashbridge-v01 It's not as nice as the official library. It's kind of bare bones: some JS glue code around FB's JS client and a bit of Actionscript to communicates with it. You don't have all the typed objects and stuff. I must say, compared to adobe's lib, it was way easier to debug / troubleshoot, though (since there's way less code and it's kind of easy to follow it; anyway, I used this approach because I had to use the graph API, but if I had to do any other FB app, I think I'd go this way, but that's just me, I guess). Hope this helps somehow or at least gives you some pointers. Cheers Juan Pablo Califano 2010/8/10 David Hunter davehunte...@hotmail.com Hi List, . Anyone have any experience with the Facebook API? RE: [Flashcoders] Create your own t-shirt
I second that approach. I made a label maker that plugged into a python backend and then on to their printer workflow. I only sent string data of the text they entered, plus font choice, color, position, and what background imagery they chose. If you could 'free draw' your own illustration then I guess we would have sent that as an array, but maybe there is a better way to send it, I'm not sure. The python turned the data into an SVG format for printing. Hope that helps. With that and Jack's TransformManager, those are the two main building blocks. Having created quite a few online designers / product customisation tools, I'd add that for print resolution imagery involving bitmaps you certainly -don't- want to be transferring large amounts of pixel data back to the server, compression or not (unless you don't mind long waits or low resolution output affecting your customer abandonment rates). Better to keep all high resolution processing (and files) on the server and to essentially only transfer user interaction data back to the server to render out the print ready, high resolution final format there, while keeping the whole process snappy. ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders

I do find there is not much stage space any more with having to have the properties panel sitting on the left the tools panel is pretty useless if you stack the properties in the same panel but I tend to have a project window open too, which fills up the space regardless. Because most of my work is code based rather than animation, I don't spend much time in the IDE, although I find authoring controls, and doing layout a chore in CS5 - hiding the timeline has helped a bit. I found Flash 8 / CS3 to be more easy for authoring, but then I had that nicely setup and I am still tweaking CS5. If I have to do any more heavily graphic oriented sites I might have to knuckle down... At least they fixed the stacking issue where SWF's used to get stuck behind the panels if they were a high resolution and it does not crash like CS4 with projects, I am reasonably happy with it. Maybe Adobe bought shares in some large computer company a while ago because we always need more real-estate, more memory and faster processors with each new upgrade of Flash ;) 2 monitors is useful, but wish I could have a setting where it always opens my test movie on the 2nd monitor without me having to move it :) ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders _ http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/195013117/direct/01/ ___ Flashcoders mailing list Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders
RE: [Flashcoders] How to handle String the best way
Not entirely sure if i understand what you want to do, but you could use a regular expression to strip out any punctuation or unwanted characters. String.split() breaks a string into an array of strings by using a specified delimiter which could be a space in this situation, so each word is an element in an array. Apply this process to both your strings and you end up with two arrays which should be easy to compare words and cycle through all the elements. Hope that helps, but I've probably misunderstood what you want to do! String.replace() then a regular expression like /[,\.!\?:;\\\/]/g and replace it with nothing: . You'll probably want to check which characters to remove but remember to use an escape slash for certain characters. Haven't tried it but there are some examples and lots of help in the docs and more online. not that knowledgeable on regular expressions to be honest. It is about a year since I tried installing it, so it may have got better :) FWIW, we use something called mjpg-streamer on Linux for our webcam running at 12fps and use Flash to load images rather than a stream - this means we can share the webcam with other apps. If you are doing a kiosk type app, where you do not connect from the outside world, this could be a way to go forward... not sure about connecting to the microphone though. [Flashcoders] AIR flv encoder
Hi List, I've been on google all day and still not found what I'm looking for. I need to record video and audio from a webcam and save it to disk. This is a kiosk project rather being on the web, so I am looking to do this in AIR. They could be stored as FLV or some other video format, but I really need it to be one file rather than separate files for video and audio. I have found a couple libraries for writing FLVs but nothing that also writes the audio part. Microphone data has recently been exposed so maybe someone has incorporated it into an FLV writer. The video format isn't important as they can be converted at a later date, but a single file combining audio and video is important. I have also looked at red5 and FFmpeg as solutions, but FMS is too expensive. Any shared knowledge on flv encoders or other techniques you've come across to record both video and audio from a webcam are greatly received! Is the canvas tag in the W3C HTML 5 spec? And how does the canvas tag compare with the ideas around SVG, which seems like a competing graphical API? In an ideal world, we could use 'open' tools with 'open' standards to create our apps. But what we have, instead, are corporations struggling with one another for business turf/markets. I've been a Director programmer for over ten years. Seeing what Adobe is doing with Director, I have no allegiance to Adobe. Eventually it will be Flash's turn to suffer the same fate. As go these big corporations and their products, so goes my work and your work? Then it's only a matter of time before it all becomes data trash. By no means an ideal situation any way you look at it. I was attracted to Director cuz I could do things with it that I couldn't do with any other tools. Flash is now the more popular and contemporary tool for doing these sorts of things. And it has equalled Director in various (though not all) ways. So I'm learning Flash. Hi, Seems you may have solved this by turning off strict mode. An alternative way (depending on how flexible you can be with your program) would be to reverse your approach and listen to what frame the clip is on (myClip.currentFrame) and perform functions accordingly. As long as you know what frame you want to trigger a function, you can do all the programming on the timeline in one place. I have put an example on pastebin for you to try. That works ok except if I try to go back to the same video which download I terminated then it says Error: Cannot call reconnect on an http connection . I cannot set the source to be or null either or it pulls an error. . RE: [Flashcoders] flv stop loading / close netconnection
sorry, my emails always seem to lose returns somehow! very annoying. Essentially how do i stop a progressively downloading flv from continuing to download? All help greatly appreciated, David From: davehunte...@hotmail.com To: flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2010 17:34:20 + Subject: [Flashcoders] flv stop loading / close netconnection Hi list, . Reallly hoping for some help on this.. Making a portfolio site that handles both images and video. I have an flv instance and a sprite that contains loaded images. Images and videos work fine. The problem is if I try to go to an image half way through a video downloading. in that situation i jump to the image and once the video has finished downloading it suddenly appears. Going from video to video (halfway through a download) is fine as the source is being overwritten each time but when it comes to an image I need to use myFLV.getVideoPlayer(0).close() to stop the download. That works ok except if I try to go back to the same video which download I terminated then it says Error: Cannot call reconnect on an http connection . I cannot set the source to be or null either or it pulls an error. . RE: [Flashcoders] flv stop loading / close netconnection
Thanks for responding Erik. Unfortunately I can't use closeVideoPlayer() as it shuts the default player which isn't allowed. On a side note I can't find anything in the docs on adding new instances of VideoPlayer Class to an FLV even though there is plenty of talk of getting different VideoPlayer classes stacked inside an FLVPlayback instance (eg. myFLVPlayback.getVideoPlayer() or myFLVPlayback.visibleVideoPlayerIndex ) . Any ideas? I have temporarily solved the problem with the nastiest workaround ever by passing # as the source. Seems to work for some reason but I'm sure it will come back and bite me. In the end I may have to make a new instance of FLVPlayback for each video and kill the old instance. RE: [Flashcoders] flv stop loading / close netconnection
Thanks Cor, I've used that sort of call when stopping an flv from playing when closing a loaded swf. But in this case I need to be able to reconnect the flv again, I'm not disposing of the FLVPlayback. All I want to do is stop the progressive download but this seems difficult to do from an instance of FLVPlayback! RE: [Flashcoders] Calculator
you are talking about two different equations. one to find out how much in percent a given amount is of a given total; the other to find out an amount with a given percent of a given total. From: k...@designdrumm.com Subject: Re: [Flashcoders] Calculator Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2010 06:02:42 -0500 To: flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com Hmmm, thats interesting then. I did a search on google for 15 percent of 3000 and it came back with 450. I am thinking google doesn't have it wrong, but whoo knows. When I run the script with those parameters, it equates correctly 15 * 3000 / 100 = 450 (15% of 3000) however 15 / 3000 * 100 = 0.5 What am I missing here then if it is not percent*total/100?
