RE: Adobe announces FrameMaker (2015 Release)

2015-06-11 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Hello Robert,

The new feature of simplified XML editing is a no cost feature, in that it is
built-in to the product. It will work in either Full-Featured FrameMaker, or
the less expensive FrameMaker XML Author (2015 Release). [For information on
FMXA, the 2nd version referred to, go to its home page at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemakerxmlauthor.html ]

Here is a link to a video about how an optional setting for the AUTHORING MODE
of XML editing in either FrameMaker or FrameMaker XML Author will allow you to
have DITA fill-in-the-blank forms, vs. working with element tags and the
traditional Structure View Window:
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/framemaker-2015/fm-simpler-xml-authoring/

This new technique will enable you to have temp team members (including SMEs)
create new DITA content with minimal training.

That could be interesting, depending on exactly what it means, and how much
extra you have to pay to use it.

Looking at the version comparison, the additions for unstructured FrameMaker in
English are:

- conditional table columns
- book-level conditional text
- web help custom skins
- auto-insert table continuation variables
- mini-TOCs

Still no wiki integration.

I'll be curious to see how well the conditional table columns work.
That seems like a major challenge.

The search seems to be broken, e.g. the results for footnote do not include
this Create and edit footnotes topic:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS6C3D24E6-2965-48bb-B6CF-50D1439AEB01.html

Or maybe you just cut some content. Searching for endnote finds nothing.

Something's wrong with the word spacing, compare old and new to see what I mean:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WSd817046a44e105e21e63e3d11ab7f7561e-7fff.html

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/12.0/Help/Using/index.html#t=using-framemaker-12%2Ffrm_books_bk%2Ffrm_books_bk-4.htm

I prefer the smaller text in the old CSS.

Framers,

Today our product management team announced a point release free upgrade for

for all non-PDF outputs.
== The non-PDF publishing for large files with many images is now faster
with 50% reduction in publishing time.

Integration with other Adobe products would work without TCS license

Structure View Enhancements

Table Enhancements

CMS Connector Enhancements

We have fixed more than 25 bugs as well!

RE: FrameMaker 12 Cloud

2014-05-20 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Rick,

You may want to be aware of a current product launch promotion that is about to
expire. Through May 30th, (10 days left) you can subscribe to ALL of Tech Comm
Suite 5 (FrameMaker, RoboHelp, Captivate, Acrobat and Presenter), for the same
price of $29.99. That is one dollar per day for 5 products (yes, with a
one-year commitment).

This is a one-time promotion related to first 6 months of product launch and
this comes to an end 11:59 PM May 30th, Pacific Time. There is an information
link to the 40% off promo on the home page of FrameMaker and Tech Comm Suite.

FYI -- after the one year, you can downgrade from Tech Comm Suite to only
FrameMaker and continue the subscription for only $29.99 per month. Again, $1
per day.

Incidentally, if a major release comes out (e.g. FrameMaker 13) during your
subscription, you are automatically upgraded at no extra cost.

If you would like regular updates on such promotions, follow us on Twitter at

Hi Framers,

Anyone using FrameMaker 12 subscription version? The price I am seeing is
$29.99 per month, but it requires a 1 year commitment. If you cancel before
the year is up, they charge you 50% of the remaining months. Huh? What good
is a month-to-month subscription if I have to commit to a year? I am
inquiring for a low-budget, non-profit client. Come on Adobe; there is
enough bad will with all of the subscription stuff and high upgrade prices.
Why the one-year commitment? Is it that costly to turn the subscription on
or off before the year is up? Why not like my Lynda.com subscription which I
can turn off and on at will?

Hi Steve,

Yes, you are right, I didn't answer Rick's question. I have no answer, other
than that Lynda.com provides training which wouldn't be used weekly in
production as FrameMaker usually is.

I do however feel that everyone should be aware that they only have 10 days
left to get 5 products for $1 per day. That is a pretty big deal, and it ends
forever on May 30th.

I will now exit this discussion. I do appreciate your feedback.

With all respect to Maxwell, special offers do not answer Rick's point. Adobe
has generated *massive* ill-will over its licensing policies; I only hope this
this is reflected in some substantive way, such as the stock price, that will
cause it to rethink.

Incidentally, if a major release comes out (e.g. FrameMaker 13) during your
subscription, you are automatically upgraded at no extra cost.

This is often touted as an advantage of cloud-based services, but is in fact a
Really Bad Thing, as it can invalidate an organization's substantial investment
in training and expertise by changing user interfaces and capabilities without
warning - not to mention, er..., causing disruption to productivity (modesty
forbids me from putting this more strongly, although I'd like to).

Just my 10c.

RE: Can't get to either the Paragraph Designer or Character Designer

2014-02-03 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
David,

The only time I've ever experienced the behavior you are describing is if I had
been running FrameMaker with more than one monitor and had some menus (e.g.
Para Designer / Char Designer) displayed off of the main monitor. That is
probably not the cause for you.

What you are experiencing is definitely not normal, with FrameMaker 12. When
you first start FrameMaker, if you invoke the paragraph designer via Format
menu or shortcut (Control-m) the menu should simply appear, docked in the right
hand side of screen.

FM 12 has a new feature that enables you to save selected files when you quit
FrameMaker. When you restart FrameMaker, you can use a Restore last session
command: it will open the last documents you saved and even display the same
zoom level and the same page that you were on. Pods will be in same display.
You can see this in action in a 90 second video that demonstrates this feature

Mike,

I will verify the correct answer for you and post it here soon. Sorry that your
Q didn't get answered. We had well over 100 Qs between chat and the Q/A pod, so
we answered as many as we can.

I believe the answer is no due to technical limitations of insets, but I will
verify that.

FYI - if/when you upgrade to XML, you can use XPath in FrameMaker 11/12, which
will search through all XML files in a folder, including sub folders.

RECORDING of What's new in FrameMaker 12 webinar from Jan 28 with time chart

2014-01-30 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Yesterday we had huge turnout at our first FrameMaker 12 webinar, which covered
many significant new features. The session is 2 hours and 15 minutes long. I am
posting info on how to access the recording and also some time stops you can
fast forward to for specific features and areas that interest you the most.

Here is the link to the recording: http://adobe.ly/1ibB3Ku
(use your Adobe.com account credentials to log-in ... once you have you won't
need to log-in again as long as browser instance is running.) If you are using
Chrome, I recommend that you clear your cache and restart Chrome before viewing.

Here are some key time stop points that will take you to major highlights of
the presentation:

* 1 hour 10 min = How to publish from FM12 to EPUB, HTML5
RESPONSIVE LAYOUT and more
(in answer to many questions, this is FrameMaker 12 by itself, with no
plug-ins, and no assistance from RoboHelp 11 or Tech Comm Suite 5!)
* 1 hour 36 min = Structure and FrameMaker XML Author 12
* 1 hour 50 min = MathML equations, including XML code view to edit
* 1 hour 53 min = improved XML white space handling
* 1 hour 57 min = Preview DITAMAP topic content
* 12 min = user interface enhancements
* 25 minutes = Regular Expressions used in Find/Change
(e.g. reverse date format)
* 28 min 44 sec = Generate QR code
* 30 min 28 sec = background color on text level and boxed/colored
paragraphs
* 32 min 30 sec = improved Conditional Text control, new UI and
complex expressions
* 38 min 44 sec = enhanced Smart Catalogs with search/filter to
narrow choices
* 46 min = improved collaborative workflow with Dropbox integration
and improved PDF review

Many people emailed me after the webinar asking about our 40% discount offer.
For a limited time, all existing customers of Adobe Technical Communication
Suite, Adobe FrameMaker and Adobe RoboHelp are eligible to take advantage of
this limited period promotional offer to purchase subscription licenses of
Adobe Technical Communication Suite 5 at 40% off for an entire year. This would
allow you to subscribe to the entire Tech Comm Suite 5 (FrameMaker 12, RoboHelp
11, Captivate 7, Acrobat Pro XI and Presenter 8) for only $29.99 per month, the
same subscription price as FrameMaker. Subscriptions are now a 1 year
commitment, though you are billed monthly. Perpetual (boxed DVD) licenses are
still available.

Mike,

You are correct. That was my post. The point I was making was that if you
subscribe for 2 years (no SW maintenance fees required) you are bound to get
another release.

Regardless of how much someone may just not like FrameMaker 12, it would be
difficult to accept this as a minor release. Product development has speeded up
addition of time-saving features over what we experienced 7-9 years ago.

This was previously the case with Creative Suite software, too.

RE: Giving some paragraphs a background colour with DITA

2014-01-23 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
FYI - for those who haven't reviewed all new features in FrameMaker 12, a new
Pgf box command is available on the Advanced Tab of the Paragraph Designer.
Unlike single cell tables, the new paragraph background color creates a box
of color than can break columns or pages.

Naturally, these values can be replicated as format rules in the EDD.

Hi Rebecca...

For FM-DITA questions you'll probably get more replies by posting to the
framemaker-dita Yahoo group.

Applying coloring/formatting to paragraphs via @outputclass is fairly easy by
adding context rules to the p (or whatever) element definition that check for
a match of that outputclass value and assigning the necessary paragraph tag or
style overrides.

Doing the same with table cells is not so easy. While you can specify the
overall table format based on the tgroup/@outputclass, there aren't any EDD
context rules that you can use to assign properties to specific table cells or
rows. Apparently FM11 added some new read/write rules that can assign these
properties. I'm not familiar with setting these up, but you can read more about
it in this post on the Adobe FrameMaker forum ..

http://forums.adobe.com/message/6026704

BTW .. I'm in the process of developing a new feature in DITA-FMx that will
allow you to specify outputclass values for rows and cells. This should be
available in FMx 2.0 when that's released.

Cheers,

...scott

Hi everyone

We're going to be using FrameMaker (12) to output PDFs from DITA. We'd like
certain paragraphs and/or table cells to have a background colour.

Our specific usecase is that we produce multi-switch config examples.
Sometimes, we find that each switch's content takes up more than a page, and
that all the switches are nearly identical. It really helps if we can colour
the content differently, so users (and us!) can see whether they're on switch
1, 2 or 3.

We thought maybe outputclass would let us do this, but so far we haven't
figured out how. We've found online references to doing this with the open
toolkit, and for HTML with CSS, but nothing about Framemaker.

Is there a way to use the outputclass attribute to style how some elements
appear in FrameMaker? If not, is there another way to get the effect we're
after?

Thanks very much!

To answer several people's questions, this new output is accomplished with only
a FrameMaker license. You do not need to have either RoboHelp 11 nor Tech Comm
Suite 5 to achieve the 5 new online outputs, including HTML5 responsive layout.
This has been a major feature request for several year. Here it is!

Robert,

For another viewpoint, Adobe was just named in the top 100 companies to work
for by Fortune. Our 2013 revenues considerably exceeded projections. So
somebody out there is happy with Adobe. ;-)

It may seem like contempt, but I think they're just clueless.

They have a lot of products that have been mature for a long time, so they have
little to offer users to justify upgrading.

They have a lot of employees with stale skill sets and it's not a company where
someone with top skills would want to work. I overheard a conversation in a
restaurant in which an Adobe employee was talking about how it was a great
place to be while she figured out what to do next in her career because they
were paying her $150K and she didn't really have to do anything.

Maybe they're not even clueless. In 2013, per SEC filings, Adobe insiders sold
9 million shares and bought 5,000.

FM12 single-source integration?

2014-01-20 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Robert,

To answer several people's questions, this new output is accomplished with only
a FrameMaker license. You do not need to have either RoboHelp 11 nor Tech Comm
Suite 5 to achieve the 5 new online outputs, including HTML5 responsive layout.
This has been a major feature request for several year. Here it is!

The "Don't intend to use structured authoring?" page of Adobe's FM12 promo
says, "Publish to popular output formats like EPUB 3, KF8, MOBI, WebHelp, CHM,
and HTML5."

How do they accomplish that? Have they integrated a subset of RoboHelp the way
they have been integrating a subset of Acrobat for years?

RE: FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-18 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
FYI -- some misunderstandings have occurred because the website uses the word
upgrade next to FM7: it is full product price, because there is no real
upgrade from SW that was released 12 years ago. Adobe did have an aggressive
discount to upgrade from FM7 to FM11 over a year ago. We promoted it with a
multi-part blog series that included videos to show FM7 methods vs. FM11. It
was advertised as your last chance to upgrade.

Not trying to shake any trees. Just being realistic about the options available
to any of us on any SW that we purchased more than 5 years ago.

If you buy a subscription and don't renew at the end of the year, the license
is invalid and FrameMaker stops working.

If you buy the $1000 full version or a $400 or $600 upgrade, the license is
perpetual. The only thing that expires is the support agreement.

I don't see why anyone would abandon FrameMaker just because the upgrades are a
bad value.

RE: FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-18 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Here, I used 2 years as a duration model. Although it would probably be longer
and more expensive, since upgrades for FrameMaker don't
seem to occur every year now. Else I would have gotten at least one - sigh -
during my 2 years license upgrade contract that expired before
FM 12 was released.

Syed,

Syed, FYI -- FrameMaker 12 is the third release to come out in approximately an
18 month cycle. For those who are regular users of FrameMaker and who are
considering the subscription, take into account that you get a new full point
release at no extra charge, and with no SW maintenance fees. Overall, for many
people it does come out more economical.

I don't plan to do the subscription model for FrameMaker 12 either. It does not
make sense for me - even if I were continuing with FrameMaker.

It only makes _some_ sense for new users of FrameMaker, or folks still on
versions _prior_ to version 10, where the upgrade cost of $999 is the same as
full price.

For example, after two years, the cost (24 * $29.99 = $719.76) is _much_ higher
than the cost of a single upgrade to FM 12 from FM 11. And, after three years,
it would be more than the list price of a full license.

Here, I used 2 years as a duration model. Although it would probably be longer
and more expensive, since upgrades for FrameMaker don't seem to occur every

RE: Saving back from FM v11 to FM v9

2014-01-16 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Karen,

A few years ago while I was working for translation agencies, this would happen
with Russian fonts, due to lack of Unicode support in FrameMaker 7. As I
recall, our linguistic engineers had some utilities for converting Cyrillic
characters back to non-Unicode font layouts. The main problem is FM 7's lack of
Unicode support.

Thank you for responding. The files were in 8 different languages and the
Russian files were all in question marks.

We had a situation where our SDL (translation software) version had to be put
to a FM ver 7 mif (which does not recognize Unicode) because SDL did not
recognize FM11 mif. A while ago SDL advanced to recognize FM 11 mif. I didn't
know and one of the Framers informed me to save file to FM11 mif, open mif in
FM ver9 and save to .fm. It worked! Caution...make sure you either
distinctively name the different versions or put them in differently named
folders/directories.

I would like to add, you have to delete the FM 11 book file and create a new
book file in FM9, and always open the file from within the proper FM version.

Love our Framers...

FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-16 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Dr. Reng,

Thank you for bringing our product launch to the group's attention. Both the
product manager, Kapil Verma, and I have submitted product announcements and
webinar details to the list, but it appears that they aren't visible yet. (I am
awaiting my confirmation email.)

For those who would like information on the 40% off promotion for FrameMaker 9
users, you may get full details at this website:
http://www.adobe.com/products/technicalcommunicationsuite/promotions.html
Please note that you can only take advantage of the 40% promotion from the
webpage listed above.

Another alternative that may alleviate any frustrations with upgrade costs is
to migrate to a FrameMaker 12 subscription. Although you commit to one year
with this subscription, the monthly rate is only $29. Any updates (including
major releases) automatically become available to you during your active
subscription. In the long run, this is possibly the most economical choice. By
the way, you may recall that with the last release (FrameMaker 11), only Tech
Comm Suite 4 was available for subscription; not the point products.

I don't know if there has been discussion about FrameMaker XML Author 12 yet.
This is a new product: a fully functional, end-to-end XML authoring solution
that is fully compliant with DITA OT. It costs 40% of the price for a full
perpetual FrameMaker 12 license and is only $19.99 per month for a year's
subscription. Find out more at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemakerxmlauthor.html

For those of you not yet familiar with the new product features, here are 3 new
AdobeTV channels that give quick, mini video demos, and will quickly let you
know about just a few of the areas with major improvements:

FrameMaker 12 Features: http://tv.adobe.com/show/framemaker-12-features
FrameMaker XML Author 12 Features:
http://tv.adobe.com/show/framemaker-xml-author-12
FrameMaker Publishing Server 12 Features:

Enjoy!

Thanks for the links. Some links on the FAQ page for FM 12 are broken ...
notably one that takes you to the subscription pricing (including a
"promotional" pricing discount).

Also, sorry to beat on this drum still, but the upgrade price of $399 from
FrameMaker 11 is still too high to be justifiable (for *my* needs ... YMMV).
Particularly after having spent many dollars on upgrading from version 9 to 10
to 11 for no real benefit for my needs - these should all have been treated as
bug fixes.

*And* my final two years of paying for license "upgrades" saw NO benefit at
all, since there were no upgrades during that period (I paid for the FM 11
upgrade separately!) ... I kinda feel like I should receive FrameMaker 12
without any more "upgrade" payments, but I suspect this will not happen.

BTW, the upgrade price from FM 10 is $599. And from earlier versions: $999 ...
which is same as full cost, so not really an upgrade!

FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-16 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
I wanted to add some clarification to points raised in this discussion.

[1] Regarding how people behind firewalls can deal with monthly ping on
subscription, I got some solutions from an internal source at Adobe:

"In case a user has subscription, then they would need internet access and be
online when they install and license the software and at least once every 30
days thereafter.
However, Government or Defense customers would most likely be using Volume
Licensing and hence, they could either use the offline activation mechanism
(http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-offline-activation.html) for
activating the product on a machine that does not has internet. Alternatively,
they could also create a pre-activated deployment package for these products on
a machine that has internet access and then deploy them on the offline
machines. The second option I provided above is usually preferred in scenarios
where the user has multiple machines."

[2] Regarding the current upgrade costs and the 40% discount, and
discontinuation of TCS month-to-month subscription, I just posted a blog that
summarizes the issues and resources:

"Tech Comm Suite 5: Month-to-Month Subscription Discontinued, Only Annual
Subscription Plan Available" = http://adobe.ly/1fCaPTD

I hope you find this helpful.

'Furthermore, we are providing both perpetual and subscription licensing
options on all our products. We do realize that the licensing needs of our
customers vary and hence, we are offering both the options for you. There is
also special upgrade pricing available as well as limited time promotional
price for some customers. Please refer to the product homepages for exact
pricing information (links below).'

Really?
To help summarize what I read ... as far as I can tell from the various pages
(I am only showing the US costs).

The promotional pricing is for the subscription model of TCS 5:

1. Subscription of TCS 5:$29.99 per month for the
first year (at a discount of 40%) - goes up after 1 year.

For licensees with both FM 9 and Robohelp 8 (as I read it), there is a
promotion discount to the full license price for each product (separately, as I
read it):

1. FM 12 $ 599 (at a
discount of 40%)

2. Robohelp 11 $ 599 (at a discount of
40%)

Presumably, each license cost above is separate(?) And, there is fine print
that I am not sure how it would be applied: this promotion is "only available
to eligible commercial and volume licensing customers worldwide" and "eligible
retain commercial customers who purchase directly from the Adobe.com Store".

What is the definition of "commercial" in this context? Are free-lance writers
who use FrameMaker and Robohelp not eligible?

For the new subscription model of FM 12, there is no discount:

1. Subscription of FM 12: $29.99 per month.
For perpetual license upgrades to FM, there is no discount:

1. From FM 11 to FM 12:$ 399

2. From FM 11 to TCS 5: $ 1199

3. From FM 10 to FM 12:$ 599

4. From FM 10 to TCS 5: $ 1199

5. From FM 7.x, 8, 9 to FM 12: $ 999 (no discount from list price)

6. From FM 7.x, 8, 9 to TCS 5: $ 1199

RE: Word and Frame comparisons

2013-09-20 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
I can think of at least one thing FrameMaker can do with paragraph updates that
I don't think is possible in Word; you can globally update multiple paragraph
styles in one step:

(1) Create Heading1 Heading 2 Heading3 next to each other
(2) Drag select through these 3 paragraphs, and Control-M to open Paragraph
Designers
(3) Go to font level. Notice that there is no name displayed for the paragraph
style and that some of the values are set to As Is (probably font size)
(4) Change the color to Blue and click on Update All
(5) FrameMaker will ask you if you'd like to apply only font changes to
paragraphs in selected area
(6) Click OK, and you have just changed the catalog definition for 3 paragraphs
in one step.

You can see a brief video demo of this at: http://adobe.ly/18ddZqI

ANN: 13Sept Webinar 9AM PAC Optimizing the Word to FrameMaker Workflow

2013-09-11 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
9:00AM PAC Fri September 13, Register at: http://adobe.ly/16OF6Fw

Migration from Microsoft Word to FrameMaker is a very common path for content
creators whose workflow outgrows Word's limitations with high volume or
document complexity. Watch FrameMaker expert Barb Binder share her tips on how
to manage a migration workflow from Word to FrameMaker, including:

== Optimizing styles and catalogs in Word before conversion to reduce document
touch up

== Word document artifacts to eliminate or avoid

== How to grasp fundamentals of FrameMaker publishing in terms that Word users
can appreciate and understand

== How to automate publishing tasks in FrameMaker via intelligent styles that
required more manual effort in Word

After this session you will have a good foundation on how to work with Word and
FrameMaker, and when it makes sense to migrate your project content into
FrameMaker.

About our Presenter: Barb Binder is an Adobe Certified Instructor and the owner
of Rocky Mountain Training. When she’s not teaching grown-ups how to use Adobe
software, she’s at Winter Park teaching kids how to ski. -- She has been an
Adobe Certified Instructor since 1997, and is currently certified on
FrameMaker, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, InCopy and the Digital
Publishing Suite. Her company, Rocky Mountain Training was one of the early
adopters of online, interactive training delivery. Students attend classes from
locations in North America, South America, Europe and even Australia.

RE: Disappearing Palette Items

2013-08-30 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
I have not had any menus disappear in the past 18 months, but while working
with FM9 and FM10 while in the translation industry, I did determine one
possible cause of problems. I worked on two screens at home, and had some
saved/named workspaces that had catalogs or palette on my laptop screen, with
main work areas and common menus on my Cinerama external monitor.

When I went on the road and used my laptop, I would usually find all floating
palettes and menus would appear over the workspace. If I didn't revise and save
the workspace, when I returned home to two screen, occasionally a pallet would
be in outer space ... not visible.

The best cure that I found was to toggle the FrameMaker window from full screen
to smaller, resizable; that always made everything reappear.

For what it's worth, I haven't had any workspace items disappear since I came
to work for Adobe 19 months ago, when I was granted a new Lenovo laptop and
Windows 7. Personally, (we all experience different things), I had more
problems with my older, 2008 laptop running WinXP with all the latest security
updates.

Reading the manual might help here.

The workspace menu doesn't read Authoring unless you have chosen the
Authoring workspace environment. That button name just shows what you current
workspace environment is set to. Mine can be Craig's Custom, Authoring, Design,
Review, Structured Authoring, or others.
Your palette items are disappearing because you are closing them. Docking them
will retain them, but if you undock them and then close them, they have to
reopened to reappear.

Reading the manual will help you understand how they work and what logic drives
their functioning.

I now realize that the workspace menu everyone keeps referring to is actually

And while I can restore most of what I want to be in there, for some reason I
can't get Object Properties back there, it only wants to exist as a

VENDOR ANN: Recording link to 8/14 Webinar "Why Structure is a Necessity..."

2013-08-14 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
We had a record turn-out today for a very dynamic webinar from Scott Abel, The
Content Wrangler, on "Why Structure is No Longer an Option, but Increasingly
Becoming a Necessity."

The answers are not all about documentation, manuals, UA, etc. You may be
surprised at some of the statistics revealed from Scott's recent research. Many
forces driving the use of structure do happen to intersect nicely with
FrameMaker, although this webinar has no product demo.

You will find the link to the webinar recording in the TWEET below:

Designing Templates in FrameMaker 11
25July 10AM Pacific Time, Register at: http://adobe.ly/131zIx0

Template design in FrameMaker is intuitive, easy-to-grasp, yet produces potent
results, even in the early stages of a project. Whether you are working with
unstructured FrameMaker, or you plan to use existing paragraph and character
styles to incorporate into a structured DITA project, you can benefit from this
session. Watch seasoned FrameMaker maven Barb Binder explain concepts like:

== Planning for logical paragraph, character, table and graphic object styles
== Time-saving steps in page layout (replicating and modifying master pages)
== Internal document content re-use from Reference Pages
== Advanced template extras like user variables, cross-references and more
== Tips for managing externally referenced graphics for logos and similar data

After this session you will have a good grounding in the fundamentals for
planning a template, and also borrowing design elements from existing
documents.

About our Presenter: Barb Binder is an Adobe Certified Instructor and the owner

2013-07-17 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
9AM Pacific Friday July 18 - register at: http://adobe.ly/14ZzI3E
July 18: FrameMaker > RoboHelp Integration
Need to publish your FrameMaker content to online and mobile formats?
FrameMaker 11, as part of the Technical Communication Suite 4 is your ideal
choice. Join us as veteran online trainer and Adobe Certified Instructor Matt
Sullivan shows you how to rapidly link and map your FrameMaker content into
RoboHelp 10, and then output to nearly any online format. Once your initial
setup is complete, Matt will show you how to keep your content in sync, and
manage your workflow. You will learn to:

 * Link FrameMaker content to RoboHelp
 * Make use of FrameMaker generated files (TOC, IX, Glossary) in your
RoboHelp output
 * Map FrameMaker content into appropriate RoboHelp structures, including
*   Tables
*   Lists
*   Headings
*   Cross-references
*   Graphics
 * Process FrameMaker conditional text as RoboHelp Conditional Build Tags for
better control of online content
 * Manually adjust your conversion CSS to control and customize your
conversion.
 * At the end of this session you will be able to create a working FrameMaker
to RoboHelp conversion project, which can then be modified per your
organization's HTML formatting requirements.
About our presenter:
Matt Sullivan is an Adobe Certified Instructor and Adobe Certified Expert in
ten different Adobe publishing and e-learning applications, including
everything in the Technical Communication Suite 4. He teaches online and
in-person classes as well as helping companies improve their publishing

printers prior to the start of his training career. After that, Matt ran his
own Adobe Authorized Training Centers (GRAFIX Training, in southern
California), managed the training arm of roundpeg, Inc., and co-wrote the
definitive FrameMaker 11 reference book, Publishing Fundamentals: Unstructured
FrameMaker 11. He has represented Adobe in countless conferences, trained

ANN: 16July FM4Word webinar Sess 9) DITA FOR BEGINNERS adobe.ly/131AWZd

2013-07-15 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
FrameMaker has been a full-fledged DITA authoring/editing solution for quite
some time, and is a logical progression for MS Word users. Not only is it easy
to convert Word documents to regular FrameMaker files, a relatively painless
method can convert such files to DITA/XML files. This session focuses on how
DITA or structured editing workspaces can be customized to make the transition
easier for Word users. Discover how built-in DITA support creates
fill-in-the-blank topics and why there are 3 markedly different ways to view
and edit DITA. This session will help you determine if FrameMaker is the right
path to DITA for you if you are outgrowing MS Word.

About the Presenter: Maxwell Hoffmann, Adobe's Global Product Evangelist for
Tech Comm Suite, has extensive tech comm publishing experience, having worked
for a variety of publishing vendors and translation agencies before coming on
board with Adobe. He is a former FrameMaker product marketing manager with
Frame Technology (before Adobe acquired the product), and has trained over
1,200 people in scalable publishing solutions over the years.

Register at: http://adobe.ly/130Ozrm

Discover how FrameMaker's long history with hyperlinks, cross-references and

of a mouse can generate a table of hyperlinked parts/views/animations derived
from imported 3D graphics. Review over traditional cross-references will not
only cover how to master xref formats, but how to target only a portion of a

Classic Aldous 7-part webinar series on Unstructure to XML for FrameMaker restored

2013-06-08 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Somehow, the 7-part series that Tom Aldous created in 2011 on all aspects of
XML and structured FrameMaker expired. Last night I was able to restore all
episodes. They now appear in chronological order near the top of our Recorded
webinars list in my signature below.

I also created a blog with a brief description of each episode and a visible
link to each episode. You can see the blog by using the short URL below:
http://adobe.ly/13hoJQ0

Note: this vintage webinar uses FrameMaker 10, but tools and principles are
basically the same. Although some menus have been streamlined in FM11, you will
have problem following the steps. Several of the webinar episodes have sample
files (e.g. scripts, conversion tables and sample scripts) that you can
download and try out for yourself.

Thanks to the many people who brought this to my team's attention. Here is a
TWEET if you wish to share the news:

[ANN:] May 31 Webinar on dynamic boilerplate in RoboHelp projects

2013-05-29 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Many FrameMaker users also use RoboHelp with (or w/o) Tech Comm Suite. This
brief, 45 minute webinar will focus on how to manage one aspect of boilerplate
content you may globally update with ease.

May 31st at 10AM Pacific Daylight Time
Register at: http://adobe.ly/12CRhmH

Reusable content is a huge timesaver with any HAAT or publishing system:
discover how RoboHelp employs snippets (subtopics or tracts of text) and UDVs
(User Defined Variables) to leverage this technique. Simple drag n' drop allow
you to plant globally update-able lists, cautions, warnings. You may also do
the reverse by selecting sections of legacy data in your project and moving it
into a new snippet.

Discover strategies for using UDVs (variables) to cover changeable data like
product names, versions, office locations, etc. Again, a simple drag n' drop
may be used by beginners or simple keyboard shortcuts for more advanced users.
With these techniques you can swiftly customize your RoboHelp project to
publish multiple versions for external or internal audiences.

RE: Corporate madness - Adobe software to be subscription only

2013-05-16 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Hello Everybody,

For the record, Adobe has made no announcements about Tech Comm Suite,
FrameMaker or RoboHelp going to subscription only. The announcements discussed
in this thread only involve Creative Suite. The change in future distribution
of Creative Cloud was announced at the Adobe MAX conference in Los Angeles last
week.

At this point, anything involving changes in how FrameMaker is distributed is
just speculation. I appreciate everyone's feedback, but plans to build a
competitive product and business plans for a competitive product may be a bit
premature. ;-)

I'm glad there is always so much creative energy within this forum. Keeps
everyone on their toes.

Hi Robert,

Your opinion is appreciated and noted. For anyone who would like a summary of
what has changed in FrameMaker since 2002, you can download a PDF document
which contains a matrix of which features were introduced in FM7.2, FM8, FM9
and FM11. Interesting reading.

[ANN:] May 17 webinar 9AM PDT: FM for Word Users, "Bullet-proof" autonumbered lists and headings

2013-05-15 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Friday May 17 Webinar / 9:00 AM PDT (Pacific Time)
Register: http://adobe.ly/129Zte0

One long-standing complaint amongst Word users has been fragile auto-numbers.
Numbered headings and lists has long been one of FrameMaker's greatest
strengths. Join this webinar to discover how (a) simple building blocks will
create "bullet-proof" numbering schemes, (b) how you can easily "borrow"
existing numbering schemes from existing templates and (c) how you can use the
paragraph "numbering" feature for other purposes (e.g. "prefix" text for
CAUTIONs or WARNINGs.)

[Webinar is at novice/intermediate level for novices and Word users]

About the Presenter: Maxwell Hoffmann, Adobe's Global Product Evangelist for
Tech Comm Suite, has extensive tech comm publishing experience, having worked
for a variety of publishing vendors and translation agencies before coming on
board with Adobe. He is a former FrameMaker product marketing manager with
Frame Technology (before Adobe acquired the product), and has trained over
1,200 people in scalable publishing solutions over the years.

OT: Corporate madness - Adobe software to be subscription only

Hi Robert,

Your opinion is appreciated and noted. For anyone who would like a summary of
what has changed in FrameMaker since 2002, you can download a PDF document
which contains a matrix of which features were introduced in FM7.2, FM8, FM9
and FM11. Interesting reading.

Customers value a business based on the goods or services it provides, not on
how much money it makes for its stockholders. Adobe hasn't come up with
anything new I thought was worth paying for since 2002.

Agile development is a way of managing IT development teams and projects that
was introduced around 2001. It is a set of principles that aims to result in
more successful projects by breaking a project down into a series of
incremental and iterative stages. As Agile has become increasingly popular,

include:

 *   Features of Agile
 *   Agile's affect on writing
 *   Learning from Lean
 * Writing in an Agile environment
 *   Load leveling
 * Minimize the need for rework

[ANN:] Webinar 9May 2PM PDT Sess 3) Separation of Content Form

2013-05-07 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Fundamental to structured authoring is the concept of the separation of content
from presentation and delivery. The way a piece of text looks during authoring
is irrelevant. The formatting and presentation are post-authoring
considerations, and activities possibly not performed by a technical writer.
The more content and form are separated, the greater the opportunity to re-use
that content in different forms, such as paper, Web, mobile, synthetic voice,
and eBook.

RE: importing HTML into FrameMaker?

2013-05-06 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Robert,

If you or an associate have access to RoboHelp, you can open and save the HTML
in RoboHelp, which saves it to XHTML. A slight modification to a structured
FrameMaker app will open the XHTML as XML. Elements can be mapped to paragraph
styles that match your existing unstructured FrameMaker document. Then you save
the *.xml file as unstructured FrameMaker.

I had a larger project that involved converting 400 Eclipse Help files from
Dreamweaver into unstructured FrameMaker and this worked beautifully. You may
find a simpler solution if you are not working with very much structure.

DITAToo is a DITA Content Management System (DITA CMS) that lets you easily and
cost-effectively automate and facilitate many DITA-related tasks. Features that
DITAToo provides include full text and metadata-based search, automatic
conversion from MS Word to DITA, link management, topic reuse tracking, maps

{ANN:} Webinar 29Apr 2:00 PDT HYPERWRITE Sess 2) The importance of metadata

2013-04-26 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Monday April 29, 2PM PDT AdobeTCS webinar: HYPERWRITE Sess 2) The importance
of metadata

Register at:http://adobe.ly/12tRTgx

Partly due to the advent of XML, many parts of the documentation process can
now be automated. And one of the keys to accurate processing and
transforming of text is metadata. Metadata is data about data. Information
that describes or classifies information. Even if we've never used the term
metadata before, we've actually know it well. An index is metadata. It helps
describes the information, but it is not part of the core information itself.
When we look deeper, we find metadata in document styling, in semantic mark-up,
in SEO, in translation, in content management systems, and even in file names.
By improving our knowledge and application of metadata, we can raise the
quality of our documents.

RoboHelp 10 swiftly creates beautiful WebHelp, HTML5 or other types of web and
Help files. In nearly all cases, your users are going to use search to locate
desired content. In some cases, your RoboHelp published results may allow
search to go outside of your files and bring up results from other website.
Obviously, you would not want information from a competitor's website to appear
at the top of the list. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a high priority for
the success of your projects.

Fortunately, RoboHelp 10 provides a number of easy-to-use tools to help refine
and control the search experience for your users. In this session you will see
live examples on how to use a variety of tools and techniques, including:

== Metadata menu to define search keywords

== Linguistic synonyms

== Stop lists

Join our special guest, RoboHelp expert Willam van Weelden, for this dynamic
presentation, which will be filled with many short, simple, live examples.

In recent years, technical communicators have focused on improving User
Assistance through new technologies and systems, with the assumption that the
nature of the content, the tone of voice, the writing style should remain the
same. In this webinar, thought leader Ellis Pratt will cover highlights of his
new white paper on this topic; we'll investigate whether the tried-and-tested
writing methods from past decades still make sense today. We'll also look at
the reasons why some organizations are breaking the rules with the User
Assistance they provide.

Topics covered include:

= Traditional approach to tech doc and the Tech Writer's relationship with the
reader
= Why change? The weakness with the current approach
= Removing waste from user documentation
= Using psychology as well as technology to provide effective User Assistance
= The context where content is used
= How can software help us make this change

About the presentor: Ellis is Director and Help Strategist at Cherryleaf, a
technical writing services and training company based near London, in the
United Kingdom. He has over fifteen years' experience working in the field of
documentation, has a BA in Business Studies, and is an Associate of the
Institution of Engineering and Technology. Ranked the most influential blogger
on technical communication in Europe, Ellis is also an author and editor of two
books: 'How to Write Instructions' and 'Trends in Technical Communication'.
