Re: [Frameworks] Make shift lighting-installing a dimmer to work lights.

2011-10-28 Thread Warren Cockerham
Kevin,

I suggest that you invest in some ND gels. That may require some make shift
barndoors or makeshift gel frames. Or, you can use black wrap and pin the ND
to the black wrap (gotta get 'em far enough away from the light source to
keep them from melting).

I made that suggestion because dimmers will change the color temperature of
the light. With that being said, these are your best bet on dimmers.
They're often cheaper than building your own.

much power is very useful at night but ideally I want to tone it down if I
need to. Then I thought, hang on surely I can put a dimmer on these babies
and then have full control over a powerful lighting system to get perfect
exposure. Now I'm having some trouble locating dimmer switches that are
rated up to 500w (let alone 1000w). I'm in the UK and the max I've found is
only 250W an they are pretty nasty looking things :(

Does anyone know where I can find some dimmer switches? Also can anyone
foresee any problems I might have putting a dimmer switch on halogen
floodlights? I'm no electrician but assume it's one, possible and two,
 should work pretty good.

 Please let me know.

2011-11-05 Thread Warren Cockerham
Tehching Hsieh's One Year Performance 1980-1981

My favorite of his one-year performances. He punches a time clock every
hour on the hour for one year. He documents the process by firing one frame
of film for each time-clock punch. The object created: a time-lapse film of
a man spontaneously sprouting hair and shivering (due to slightly different
poses every hour) standing next to a spinning clock. A rare (and
effective) study of monotonous labor.

And it's at the Logan Theatre this year! The Logan doesn't look (or smell)
as underground as it used to but at least they allow you to program
multi-projector pieces and the after parties/shows are in walking
distance. For those of you considering going to the festival, some of the
indiegogo donation prizes are worth checking out.

San Francisco Cinematheque presents a screening of film/video works in
which written text is visualized and plasticized, explored and displayed.
Battering, caressing and seducing viewers/readers while exploring
syntactical forms (including poetic lyric, introspective essay,, journal,
harangue, laundry list, love letter and song), the seven film/video works
on this program form a thumbnail catalog of the diverse expressive
potentialities of language’s graphic notation displayed as light moving in

Re: [Frameworks] Films/Videos looking at concepts of work

2014-01-08 Thread Warren Cockerham
There's also Teching (Sam) Hseih's* One Year Performance 1980-1981 (Time
Clock Piece) *which I believe exists somewhere in 16mm format. Sam punched
a time clock on the hour every hour for one year in his studio. He shot one
frame of 16mm film for each time clock punch. He shaved his head at the
beginning of this performance - the time lapse/animated hair growth serving
as a record of the performance. I believe he was institutionalized briefly
right after this performance - he didn't sleep for more than an hour at a
time for one year... punching a clock several times a day is maddening
enough. A link explaining the work: http://vimeo.com/16280427

There's Jodie Mack's* Dusty Stacks of Mom* that is currently playing all
over the world. Search the title and you'll find tons of info on it and
it's relationship to work, labor, capitalism, MOM pop business, etc.

I also made a video a few years ago called *Between the Sheets* that I can
send anyone on the list a password protected link to. Description: A hidden
cellphone camera documents the trek of a box of sheets as it travels
through a Wal-mart Distribution Center. Part roller coaster ride, part
Marxist critique, this cat and mouse game was shot on the final day of ten
years of service by associate 2569.

It's only password protected because my sister still works there and is
supporting two kids with the job. I really can't jeopardize her job (no
matter how shitty the conditions are and how politically unjust the entire
corporation is) with my silly little video that could be easily found with
a simple internet search. But art folks, you might be interested.

[Frameworks] Oxberry Master Series Animation stand (model 5442) assembly

2014-02-07 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi all..

I was wondering if anyone on the list has any literature on (or images of)
an Oxberry Master Series Animation stand model 5442. I'm currently
assembling one that was purchased from the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative
over the summer. I don't have the money to hire a tech from Oxberry. We've
got it about halfway assembled using some photographs as reference. But,
I'm afraid we'll need an official manual to proceed. Does anyone have one?
Does anyone have detailed photographs of the machine assembled?

thanks in advance...

2014-02-08 Thread Warren Cockerham
Ruth (all):

Over here at Bennington College, ours is outfitted for 35mm and 16mm. It
also still has (what appears to be) a fully functioning stepper motor.
We're also hoping to outfit ours for a DSLR (or whatever future digital
cameras are best for stop motion) and I'm definitely hoping to make it an
interchangeable system. I've been reading about folks integrating homemade
step motors with Dragon Frame using Arduinos. I'd be interested to hear if
anyone has a fully functional Oxberry, with DSLR, and an integrated with
Dragon Frame. I'm much more excited about the film possibilities but I know
we'll need this to work digitally for practical purposes.

I'll probably try to visit USC when I'm in Los Angles in April. I also plan
to contact MassArt to look at theirs the next time I'm in Boston. When
Jodie Mack gets back to Dartmouth, I'll make the short trip over there too
to see what they've got. But I have a feeling this one is probably a bigger
model than Dartmouth and MassArt's -- I think MassArt has the Filmmaker
series rather than the double-pole master series that we have.

I'm sure there are some folks on this list that have worked with this exact
machine when it was at the Atlantic Filmmaker's Coop, We're still
assembling it (sort of blindly). I don't expect it to be fully functional
until the fall. If I don't figure it all out before the fiscal year rolls
over here this summer, we'll probably be looking to work with a technician
sometime in late summer. DIY until then

all the best,
Warren

Re: [Frameworks] HOW TO USE WITHOUT A BOX TO SUBMIT FILMS

2014-02-16 Thread Warren Cockerham
Yes, I hate it too. It takes forever on the filmmaker side and it generates a
lot of unwanted submissions on the festival side of things. However, it does
help a festival keep information organized AND it generates a lot of
submission-fee revenue for all of those indie-makers blindly submitting to
festivals that WAB and IMDB suggest is right for them. WAB is not only boring,
annoying, and expensive, it creates ethical/political dilemmas for festivals
and makers.

With that said, I'm sure there are many examples in which WAB has helped
artists/filmmakers connect with an appropriate festival. But, there's gotta be
a better way. I'm sure programmers are all ears if people have a alternative
solutions.

can we return to the WAB discussion for a moment? The settings you are

service, overall, being extremely spammy, expensive, poorly designed,
ineffectual, especially for independent makers, turns me off to the entire
thing to the point where I won't apply to a festival if they require a WAB
entry and don't offer an alternative of at least a vimeo link send-in. I
understand that festivals need tools to help them manage data, etc. But WAB
seems like the worst possible solution.

Are there more filmmaker friendly tools or projects out there to help with
this problem? Do people know how we got so hooked on WAB hegemony?

native resolution of the projector? What is the computer that will be

Usually a 1080p master should be encoded at 20 megabits per second,
two-pass variable bit rate encoding. This is Blu-ray standard quality.

Certain types of footage, especially fast motion or flicker, may benefit
from setting the compression keyframe distance explicitly. There's no way
to recommend what that distance should be, it's totally footage-dependent.
I would do an encode without a specific keyframe distance and see if the
result looks good. If you are seeing frame blending or other artifacts,
set the keyframe distance to 24 or 30, depending on source frame rate.
That's one keyframe per second. If you still see artifacts, reduce the
keyframe distance incrementally. If keyframe distance is set to the
minimum of 1, then each frame is compressed individually (interframe) and
there is no interpolation across frames (intraframe). This is an extreme
setting that may cause more problems than it solves, but I'm describing
  options.

The potential issue with high bitrate encoding is that the playback
computer has issues playing it back. If the processor or hard drive is not
fast enough, the playback will stutter and drop frames. This has happened
to me personally, and it utterly sucks in ways I can't begin to describe.
Therefore I suggest also encoding a 720p file as a backup in case the
target playback system chokes on the 1080p file. Encode the 720p file at
10 megabits per second, two pass variable bit rate.

In the past, I've used consumer (and prosumer) flat bed scanners. This

More recently, I've shot single frames and strips using a DSLR with a good

What method has given you good results?

documentaries (with some exceptions!) I'm more interested in the animal

inter-human behaviours (ethics, empathy, violence). Arthouse or
 experimental material more than Babe.

 Any tips very gratefully received!

[Frameworks] Max MSP/Jitter

2014-08-05 Thread Warren Cockerham
Frameworkers:

I'm looking for research suggestions of artists, filmmakers, and works that
utilize Max MSP/Jitter as their main software tool. I am specifically
interested in FILM and analog video makers and works (experimental,
abstract, avant-garde) that have used Max to explore or investigate the
moving image medium via digital processes that resemble or have a direct
lineage to analog processes. I know there are many instances of hardware
modifications utilizing Max (and those are welcomed suggestions). But, I'm
really interested in standalone Max patches or apps that resemble analog
processes. Expanded Cinema, video installation, live or interactive
performances (something beyond VJ stuff), and theater/black box works are
all welcomed suggestions.

[Frameworks] Cameraless Filmmaking emulation in photoshop

2014-08-27 Thread Warren Cockerham
Frameworks:

A few years ago, photoshop offered a filmstrip function in its video
tools. You used to be able to emulate cameraless filmmaking techniques in
this mode. I believe Gregg Biermann used this technique in some of his
work. You can still work with video frame-by-frame in photoshop. But, it
looks like the filmstrip function has disappeared in the last few PS
versions. Does anyone know where one might work this way digitally? Does
GIMP offer up this functionality?

Re: [Frameworks] Cameraless Filmmaking emulation in photoshop

2014-08-27 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Rajesh,

I know PS still ingests video and you're still able to work frame-by-frame.
Many folks still use PS for rotoscoping and video cutouts because the
aesthetic looks handmade - like Kelly Sears' Voice on the Line
http://vimeo.com/8700224. But in CS3, there was a filmstrip function that
allowed you to work on a strip of video as if it were a strip of film and
the product would kinda resemble a cameraless film without discreet frames
like... Len Lye's Color Box https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PgNr0IZRDE ,
Ben Russell's Trypps 1 http://vimeo.com/7480364 , Jodie Mack.s A Joy,
http://vimeo.com/8375376Brakhage's Night Music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk8Bs2w5pUI, etc. I'm trying to show
examples of digital simulacra of the real/organic thing... or a different,
digital, material-alienated thing

But thanks for the suggestion; that dude's pretty excited about some
smart-object video packaging. And yes, those filter packages in PS are
examples of digital simulacra that are both material and labor alienating
for sure. But, I'm looking specifically for this cameraless, frameless,
digital example.

thanks again,
Warren

celluloid-based moving images. As the commercial film industry forces us to
embrace digital moving images and the planned obsolescence of the means to
produce and distribute those products, this film tour aims to share films
that embrace the contemporary DIY strategies, politics, and aesthetics of
an enduring, artisanal, and personal approach to filmmaking. This
traveling program carries with it more than 30 16mm works and 180 35mm

[Frameworks] show in Denver tonight

2015-01-31 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hello Frameworkers in the Boulder/Denver area.

Here's whats on tap for the New England Home Movie Tour - Denver Edition
https://www.facebook.com/events/598651916931585/. Show is at Glob 3551
Brighton Blvd. Denver, CO 80216 doors are at 8pm and show starts at
8:30pm. It's listed on this week.. But, without the program notes. So,
here it is..

*New England Home Movie Tour*

*Glob, Denver, COSaturday, 1/31/15 *
*Trt approx 90min*

*Undergrowth* (2011), Robert Todd, 11min, color, sound, 16mm
A hunter dreams through its prey's eyes.

*Animals Moving to the Sound of Drums* (2013), Jonathan Schwartz 8min,
color, sound, 16mm
That fall it was not intentional to have a Galway Kinnell book on the table
near where the caterpillar in the doorway, feeding on our offerings, became
the butterfly, feeding on honey water, staying in our house until we let it
go. Or it was not known about the deer in Putney or that the baby birds in
the raspberry bushes would cry to us in summer. A beloved, old friend once
visited Vermont to do some work for Galway Kinnell and she described a
stone table in the field where they ate meals in the afternoon - it
sounded like a song and so I looked at the book and from Little
Sleep's-Head Sprouting Hair in the Moonlight here is that line: “The still
undanced cadence of vanishing”.

*Tracking Shots: minus moose* (2014), Colin Brant, 5min, bw, sound, 16mm
Winter is cold, the Taiga is vast, and moving through it somewhere is a
cloistered beast. This film is the first of several animated tracking shot
films that was shot with a Bolex on black and white reversal film and hand
processed in buckets.

*The Natural History of Harris Ave* (2004), Jo Dery, 3min, bw, sound, 16mm
Xerox transfer and silkscreen on clear leader
Images of different weeds growing along Harris Avenue in Providence, RI

* Roadside Attractions* (2013), Robert Todd, 9min, color, sound, 16mm
Sights of sites along the road. Circling a City Block in Boston.

35mm handmade slides from 2008-2012 - selections from Light Fractures,
Meat, and Sorry, Luther Price

*3 Generations: Training* (2014), Warren Cockerham, 10min, color, sound,
16mm
A collage film. Contents: a 70s educational film for parents, silk screen
copies, macro footage of court and police records, 2 photographs,
elastration footage and fingerprints.

*Dirty Rosa* (2004), Luther Price, 4min, color, sound, 16mm

*Scream Tone* (2004), Jo Dery, 3min, bw, sound, 16mm
This is a direct animation made by applying Letraset half-tone films onto
16mm film. The sound is made by the image as read on the optical track.
There is both a positive and negative version of the film; the sound reads
differently in each version.

*Persian Pickles* (2012) Jodie Mack, 3min, color, sound, 16mm
A swimming study of paisley patterns traces this decorative motif from its
origins in Persian weavings to appearances Irish quilting and American
Counterculture. Extending on the stroboscopic tradition of anti-animation,
this short material study fixates upon discarded materials to examine the
decorative and its relationship to the cycles of industry and evolving
modes of production.

*Trembling Palace* (2013), Robert Todd, 6min, color, sound, 16mm
The world shivers in the darkness, trembles in the light. Winter, Boston,
2012.

*If the War Continues* (2012), Jonathan Schwartz, 5min, color, sound, 16mm
for ascending:
“and before I could be noticed again and taken to task, I
spoke to the tiny blessed star within me, shut off my heartbeat, made my
body disappear into the shadow of a bush, and continued my previous voyage
without thinking about returning home ever again.” -H.Hesse

*Inkblot #40: Sleep* (2011), Luther Price, 5min, color, sound, 16mm

35mm handmade slides from 2008-2012 - selections from Light Fractures,
Meat, and Sorry, Luther Price

*Inkblot #22 *(2008), Luther Price, 5min, color, sound, 16mm

*Future is Brigh*t (2011), Jodie Mack, 3min, color, sound, 16mm

HI Frameworkers...

Unfortunately, I received news from Tim Roberts that Counterpath Press in
Denver has to relocate their space and had to cancel a few events including
the touring program http://www.newenglandhomemovietour.com/ we were
supposed to share out there on 1/31. I've been working with Kelly Sears on
finding a new venue -- Tim suggested Glob, but so far they've been
unresponsive. We are pretty flexible around that Denver date (1/31) and
could share this program with the Mile-High folks on 1/30, 1/31, 2/1 or
2/2.

If anyone in the Denver/Boulder area wold like to help us relocate this
program please email me off-list.

thanks,

Re: [Frameworks] The Complaining Body

Hi Sarah,

There was a post similar to this last year called concepts of work that
you might find in the Frameworks archive. I copied and pasted my response
here:

There's also this video I made a few years ago: https://vimeo.com/32584231
my body's still complaining about that labor..

Whenever I see an ethnographic travelogue or some study of the other
by a white male at a screening, there's always a collective eye roll of
great, another white male putting minorities on the screen. I know the
trope, but I don't actually know any of those specific cliche films.
 What are some?

Here's the description copied and pasted from the wall text of the gallery:

*MEAT, Chapter 3: The Maggots Will Find You*

Since the mid 1980’s, Boston-based visual artist Luther Price has been
known for his deeply personal, and at times disturbing, Super-8mm films and
live performances. In recent years, Price has moved from the Super 8mm
format to recycled, distressed, and hand-painted 16mm films and 35mm
slides. His 35mm slide work has garnered much attention since their
critically acclaimed debut at The Whitney Biennial in 2012. This exhibition
follows Price’s *Meat* series, inspired by a violent incident in Nicaragua
in 1985 when Price was shot with a high-powered rifle in his abdomen. This
traumatic experience symbolically killed the trauma of Price’s childhood.
The ghosts of his traumatic childhood, the death of his mother, father, and
sister in the late 90s, and the remnants of his gunshot wound are recurring
examinations in Luther’s body and his body of work. This exhibition marks
the 30-year anniversary of Price’s shooting, death, and subsequent rebirth.
It features a brand-new series of handmade 35mm slides, the second
exhibition in 30 years of Price’s little-seen sculpture work from the
1980s, and a series of 60 photographs from the 80s by photographer and
collaborator, Russell Scholl.

A mini-retrospective of Luther Price’s moving-image works accompanies this
exhibition.

Re: [Frameworks] Luther Price exhibition in NYC closes on Halloween!

2015-10-29 Thread Warren Cockerham
I don't know about Mark Pauline. Luther Price was shot at close range in the
abdomen with an assault rifle 30 years ago. The accident happened in Nicaragua.
The US confiscated his medical records when he returned from his trip that
summer. He created 11 sculptures in the fall of 1985 at MassArt based on this
experience. Luther's wound didn't heal that fall; he was changing his dressings
3 times a day. That December, he returned to the hospital for reexamination and
the bullet was finally found and removed. This injury along with the death of
Luther's sister, mother, and father (all died from cancer) from 1998-2001,
inform much of the medical imagery found in his slide, film, and now painting
work. There are also 4 sculptures in the exhibition from that period - one of
which is a self-portrait. And, as the quote from the article states, one was
made prior to the shooting. The bullet is on display in a vitrine at the
gallery along with other artifacts from Luther's childhood and from his early
film work. I'm working on a transcription of a 2 1/2 hour interview with Luther
that we recorded just before the show opened. I hope to have it finished soon.

Re: [Frameworks] Multi-channel video tech requirements

2015-07-07 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Chris,

I'm sure you're thinking of Zach Poff's multi-screener.
http://www.zachpoff.com/software/multiscreener/

Zach seems like a generous soul. He also wrote some scripts to run Bright
Sign synchronizers on Macs a few years ago:
http://www.zachpoff.com/software/brightsign-video-sync-scripts/

Depending on how synchronized you need to be, I've had pretty good results
from using identical, cheap, media players and hitting play on one remote.
It isn't frame-synced but it's not bad. But, I bet there's some other DYI/
homemade software and hardware out there that does it.

good luck,
Warren

What's the limit of monitors these things can support?

Hey Patrick (and Tess)..

I thought that Naomi Uman's REMOVED was a scratched film for many years
too. But, she told me a few years ago that she applied (clear?) nail polish
to the parts of the images she wanted to keep -- frame by frame - for many
months. Then, she gave the film a bleach bath... I guess that's why there
are faint images of bodies left on the bleached out portions of the film
and cracks and crevices on the other parts of the image.

hope that helps,

Re: [Frameworks] Upgrading Mac Tower for optimal FCP 7 performance

2016-01-30 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Ken,

For hard drives, I would suggest getting a 2.5" SSD like these

instead of a 7200rpm 3.5". You'd need to get this adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Technologies-Transposer-3-5-Inch-TP-25ST35TA/dp/B0057UHR2M

I'd also consider switching from FCP7 to Premiere. You might be maxed out
on RAM, but FCP7 doesn't care; it only uses 4gb of RAM. You can allocate as
much RAM as you need with Premiere. When I initially switched over to
Premiere, I also used the FCP7 keyboard shortcuts (a preferences option in
Premiere) - it was just like working in FCP7 but a lot faster. If you're
project originated on film and you need to have a negative conformed,
you'll probably want to stick with FCP7 and Cinema Tools. Otherwise,
there's not much of a reason to use it with an all-digital project. I think
you can get the entire Adobe CC package for $20 a month if you teach or
you're a student. Apple Pro Res files take up a lot of hard drive space. I
switched over for space, speed, text, and Adobe dynamic link. There's other
options of course, but if you love FCP7 like I did (and still do),
Premiere's probably your best bet. FCP7 doesn't take advantage of GPU in
your graphics card either (you might think of upgrading your video/graphics
card too).

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Re: [Frameworks] I'm a revolutionary

2016-04-12 Thread Warren Cockerham
Dear Gene,

I remember seeing that like a week or so ago - and like Jeff, I thought of
Fred Hampton (assassinated by the Chicago Police by order of FBI's
Cointelpro on 12/4/69). Very little has changed. The clip in question was
on Democracy Now! on 3/31 during the headlines. A protester in Minneapolis
was shouting "I am a Revolutionary!" to a crowd of hundreds also protesting
the idiotic and now endemic decision to not charge the cops that murdered
Jamar Clark
. "... a
broken criminal justice system." Too broken. Broken enough to have another
BPP for Self Defense. I think that Fred would be proud of Black Lives
Matter... we need thousands of Fred Hamptons now.

Amy Goodman covers this briefly during the headlines on 3/31 (
http://www.democracynow.org/shows/2016/3/31). The story begins at 5:12 and
the quote in question begins at 5:49. I remember Amy's interview with Keith
Ellison

in the fall during the initial protests. Some stupid fucking cop pointed an
assault rifle at Ellison's son! And here in New York City this weekend, we
have the mayor and a presidential candidate making insensitive racial jokes
like it's no big deal... and I'm not talking about Donald Trump. I hope
these voters wake up and realize that these pigs are often not just gangs
of cops anymore they are often the kinds of cops called 'super
predators'... no conscience, no empathy... we can talk about why they ended
up that way but first, we have to bring them to heel.

Re: [Frameworks] I'm a revolutionary

2016-04-13 Thread Warren Cockerham
Gene,

I agree with your change. I put those words in quotes - the other
democratic candidate says that a lot. He doesn't go far enough in
describing the situation. But, it is refreshing to hear a presidential
candidate say that real change doesn't happen from the top down; it always
happens from the bottom up. I also realize electoral presidential politics
isn't revolutionary.

I used to teach at The Better Boys Foundation (BBF) in North Lawndale on
the west side of Chicago at 15th and Pulaski. I taught film and video there
for 5 years (2008-2012). That was the site that Fred started the Breakfast
for Children Program in Chicago with his Deputy Minister of Education,
Billy 'Che' Brooks. Billy was my colleague, friend, and supervisor for
those 5 years at BBF. In 2012, I screened Howard Alk and Mike Gray's *The
Murder of Fred Hampton*. By all accounts, it was the first time that film
screened publicly in that community. More than 100 people attended the
screening and stayed for a panel discussion with Billy, Jeff Haas, Flint
Taylor, and Bill Hampton. This was shortly after Flint Taylor led the
People's Law Office to convict that asshole, John Burge. At BBF, I
administered 7 other art and trade apprenticeships for teenagers in the
community. In 2011, we were worried that a new mayor would de-fund or pull
funding from Maggie Daley's After School Matters program which funded more
than half of our apprenticeships. I saw soon-to-be mayor Rahm Emanuel (Bye
Anita!) at a pizza place. I invited him to BBF to speak. We knew he was
going to win the election, so Billy and I wanted to make sure that funding
for after school programs would continue. He promised that it would and
that he would address it at the press conference he was holding there that
afternoon. Before the press conference, he came into my
office/classroom/studio. The place was decorated with posters that students
printed out: Fred Hampton, Hoop Dreams, The 400 Blows, Reservoir Dogs, and
Raging Bull among others. Guess which two posters Rahm praised... yep,
Reservoir Dogs and Raging Bull happen to he his favorite movies. He asked
me something like.. "your white, what can I do to fix race relations in
this city as mayor?" I said, you might start by publicly apologizing for
the assassination of Fred Hampton and commemorate Monroe St. as "Fred
Hampton Way." He said he didn't know a lot about it and he would read up on
it. We were interrupted by Billy and a group of board members.

I had some idea that he was going to be a terrible mayor. Who knew it was
going to be worse than little Daley and Boss Daley. Unbelievable corruption
and racism.

Hi Robert,

Have you seen (and/or heard?) any of Jesse McLean's video work (she's also
made a few films once upon a time)? There used to be full-length pieces on
her vimeo page .
But, I'm assuming those have moved to Fandor or are available at the VDB.
You might also try Melika Bass, her vimeo page
. Her work leans more toward narrative; she
takes cues from Bresson on both sound and acting/modeling.

good luck,

Hi Seth,

Is it possible to travel to NYC with a film transparency scanner like one
of the Epson Perfection models and a laptop to scan frames at the Donnell?
You could easily shift the magenta colorspace in photoshop (or gimp if
you're anit-adobe) and output print-quality images. Maybe a friend in NYC
could do this and send them to you? Sorry, I don't live there anymore.

[Frameworks] Buchanan '92 ad - Tongues Untied - anti NEA

2016-10-17 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hello frameworks hive mind...

I am searching for Pat Buchanan's 1992 Republican Primary ad that features
2 minutes of re-edited footage of Marlon Riggs' TONGUES UNTIED. His
campaign produced the ad to argue that G.H.W. Bush's subsidized "gay
pornography" with NEA funds. I've looked far and wide online and cannot
find it. Does anyone have a link or a copy of it? Unfortunately, it does
not appear in this CSPAN compilation
.
I did come across Megan Kelley and Fox News' ridiculous anti- NEA
("stimulus package" ) reporting that sited McDowell and Kuchar's
THUNDERCRACK as porn. Here it is
. I remember some Frameworks
discussion of this 7 years ago. I'd love to see the Buchanan ad if anyone
has it.

thanks,
Warren

[Frameworks] FLEX revival // FLEX is moving to Tampa, FL!

2017-12-04 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Frameworkers!

I have a brief (and very early!) enthusiastic note to deliver to all
FLEXfest lovers. I've been working with Roger Beebe (FLEX founder and
artistic director 04-'13) and Alisson Bittiker (with FLEX since '05 and
artistic director '13 - '16) on reviving FLEXfest here in Florida. We are
in the very early stages of moving the festival to Tampa, FL. I'm aiming
for a call for entries sometime this coming May for a festival in spring of
'19 in the Tampa/ St. Pete area.

FLorida EXperimental !!

I remember the first ever evening of FLEXfest programs in Gainesville put
on by Roger (and Jodie Mack, Maggie Tuttle, Lisa Danker, and the original
FLEX team) back in 2004. Growing up in rural Florida, that first FLEXfest
seriously changed my life. Rob Todd's STABLE, Bill Brown's MOUNTAIN STATE,
and (definitely!) Christopher Harris' RECKLESS EYEBALLING were all eye and
brain-opening standouts from that first night of programming. The last
evening of programs that year kicked off with ALTITUDE ZERO by Lauren Cook
and THE ART OF KNOWING by David Gatten. In between those bookends were
juror screenings by Naomi Uman and Tony Gault. I volunteered in '05
(Deborah Stratman, Bill Brown, and Scott Stark) and in 06' - the first time
I ever fucked up a Ben Russell film projection, but not the last...
actually, it was BR's fault. But the hits from that evening were the Craig
Baldwin juror programs.

In recent years, I've been involved in some other programming work - spent
lots of time with Bryan Wendorf working on Chicago Underground (CUFF),
three large-scale Luther Price exhibitions in Vermont, NYC, and Chicago. I
ran a rag-tag, unofficial screening series in Bennington, VT. And about
three years ago, I toured the New England Home Movie Tour.
http://www.newenglandhomemovietour.com/and other independent curatorial
adventures.

The FLEX revival is in its infancy but I wanted to put the word out now to
spark some excitement and interest. I'm thrilled and motivated to keep FLEX
rolling. It was a very NEEDED public program in Florida and I know there
are dozens of people on this list that encountered their first truly
alternative/ counter-cultural cinematic gems in Gainesville, Florida thanks
to FLEX, Roger, Alisson, and company. Tampa and the surrounding area are
in need of and primed for a culture revolution here too. Hopefully, other
revolutions to come!

more soon...

the very warmest from Tampa, FL...

Re: [Frameworks] Parallel Editing

2017-11-20 Thread Warren Cockerham
The problem with Kelsey’s inquiry is it’s much too broad. There are literally
millions of narrative examples in film and television. Every popular tv show is
parallel edited. Instead of listing millions of examples, is there something
more nuanced that you’re after here, Kelsey?

Re: [Frameworks] FLEX FEST??

2018-09-05 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Ken (Et al.),

FLEX is happening. The call for entries will be open as soon as my life
makes it possible. I'm also scrounging up some $$ to get started but it's a
trickle - not much at all. I'll have a call open in the next few weeks so
stay tuned. The fest is happening 2/7 - 2/10 in Tampa, FL. I realize
it'll be a quick turnaround on the submission screening/ programming side
of things. But hey, in my experience, it's always down to the wire no
matter how long your call is open. Jurors are in place as is the
exhibition equipment. FLEX (as it always has been) is completely volunteer
run. More very soon on all FLEX related news ...

Re: [Frameworks] Seeking examples of film elegies

2018-08-29 Thread Warren Cockerham
The Future is Bright (2011) by Jodie Mack ..
It was played at Scott Nygren's funeral service (on video) at the
University of Florida in 2014 ... Scott was Jodie's (and my) former
professor. I didn't know that it was shown at the service until I screened
it in Gainesville the following year for the New England Home Movie Tour..
alongside a few of Rob's filmsAfterwards, Scott's's wife, Maureen Turim
(also our former professor), approached me with tears in her eyes. She
said the print overwhelmed her -- it was her first time experiencing the
physical film. We ended the program with that film just by chance that
night... It certainly changed how I experienced and programed the film for
the rest of the tour... Gainesville was stop 1.. 16 other stops followed..
We showed Rob's *Undergrowth *and *Trembling Palace *that night with films
by me, Colin Brant, Luther Price, Jo Dery, Rob, Jodie, and Jonathan
Schwartz... been thinking about that tour a lot these last 2 weeks...

love,
Warren

[Frameworks] FLEXfest 2019 call for entries

2018-10-11 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Frameworkers!

The Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival is please to announce our call
for entries! (FINALLY!) As many of you know, FLEX is back in action, now
in Tampa, FL. FLEX, as always, alternates between a competitive festival
with an open call for entries and a curated event with a slate of invited
filmmaker's presenting a program of their work and a program of work that
influenced them. This year's festival is a "competition" festival (and we
are still working out our modest prizes). Our jurors this year are Nazli
Dinçel, Almudena Escobar López, and Dana Plays. More information on our
amazing jurors here:

  https://www.flexfest.org/flex-2019-jurors/

Our call for entries is open for the next 6 weeks, deadline for submissions
is 11/20/18. As in the past, there are no entries fees for filmmakers
living outside the United States and for festival alumni. For all others,
the modest submission fee is $15 ($10 each if you're submitting more than 3
works). FLEX is completely autonomous and volunteer run festival with
sponsorship support from Film Tampa Bay and The
University of Tampa's College of Arts and Letters
.

FLEX doesn’t want to know in advance what experimental means. We’re
interested in work that challenges generic designations (including the
traditional “avant-garde” or “underground” ones). Work may also draw on
documentary, narrative, animation, or any other tradition – or no tradition
at all. So, what is experimental? We’re hoping to be surprised by your
answer. For those of you unfamaliar with FLEX and it's history, dating back
to 2004, check our archives tab on the FLEX homepage:

   https://www.flexfest.org/

The festival takes place in Tampa, FL February 7th - 10th, 2019. All
filmmakers submitting work to the festival will be notified of their
acceptance (or non-acceptance) by December 20, 2019. Here's the call for
entries link:

https://www.flexfest.org/call-for-entries-2019/

experimentally yours,
Warren (Tampa, FL)

p.s. A very special thanks to *Roger Beebe *and *Alisson Bittiker* for
their help in getting FLEX set up in it's new home Don't worry
Gainesville, we'll be coming through town with a touring program (and maybe
some regular programming) soon enough!

Hi all.. of course the typo... it is an obvious one. We will send
acceptance notifications by December 20, 2018 (not 2019):

The festival takes place in Tampa, FL February 7th - 10th, 2019. All
filmmakers submitting work to the festival will be notified of their
acceptance (or non-acceptance) by December 20, *2018*.

Re: [Frameworks] walking

2019-05-04 Thread Warren Cockerham
Ben Russell's LET EACH ONE GO WHERE HE MAY (2009)
seems essential to this "walking" inquiry.

from Ben's vimeo description:
Let Each One Go Where He May (USA) is the stunning feature debut of
celebrated Chicago-based filmmaker Ben Russell. Having its world premiere
in Toronto, the film traces the extensive journey of two unidentified
brothers who venture from the outskirts of Paramaribo, Suriname, on land
and through rapids, past a Maroon village on the Upper Suriname River,
tracing the voyage undertaken by their ancestors, who escaped from slavery
at the hands of the Dutch 300 years prior. Shot almost entirely with a 16mm
Steadicam rig in thirteen extended tracking shots, this cartographic
portrayal of contemporary Saramaccan culture is a rigorous and exquisite
work that partakes in and dismantles traditional ethnography, inviting
anachronism and myth-making to participate in the film’s daring conflation
of history. - Andréa Picard, TIFF

2019-11-07 Thread Warren Cockerham
Alexis,

Scott is right - the chemicals are easy to find and mix. The recipe and
ingredients are here: http://stores.photoformulary.com/content/01-0035.pdf

You can purchase those in bulk quantity here:
http://stores.photoformulary.com/bulk-chemicals/

or small kits here:

Re: [Frameworks] 50 Years of Super 16

2020-02-25 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hey Julian..

BAMBOOZLED (2000) by Spike Lee was shot (in part, in super 16 - the rest in
dv) maybe even reversal?

Also reach out to one of your Chicago Melika Bass - most of her
features/short features were shot in S16mm.

Also Jodie has other S16mm shorts that use the extended image as
soundtrack.. like PERSIAN PICKLES 2012.
