Re: [Freeciv-Dev] [Freeciv-i18n] Speculation about renaming the freeciv project
There are lots of interesting topics on this forum, I need to register :) For Polish none of the options is particularly transparent, but neither is Freeciv. I like Cultomundi because it sounds nice, but I don't think it would ring a bell for Polish speakers (which is not necessarily a disadvantage, we are quite used to foreign words in proper names). One proposal that I can think of is Ad Astra, which would highlight the aspect of scientific development and would fit in nicely with the concept of sending the spaceship to Alpha Centauri. It also comes from a Latin phrase, so there is a change that it would ring a bell to most of European and Anglophones, Hubert On 29 January 2014 23:49, Marko Lindqvist cazf...@gmail.com wrote: For many project members are active only in these mailing lists, and not necessarily following the forums, here's a link to forum discussion about project name. Re: [Freeciv-Dev] [Freeciv-i18n] negated support in helpdata.c
Hi, While I'm hardly an authority on the coding bit, from the point of view of the translator the 1st method look nice. In principle, I would go for static grammar and would not like dynamically generated sentences. If I understand this correctly, dynamic sentences could more or less work for my language (Polish), but I'm not sure if negative sentences can be easily auto-generated in other languages, so (as a translator) I'd leave as much freedom and flexibility to translators. Hubert On 5 April 2013 22:07, Marko Lindqvist cazf...@gmail.com wrote: Adding i18n list as this is mainly concern for translations. On 5 April 2013 20:19, Emmet Hikory per...@shipstone.jp wrote: As part of the general coverage of negated I wanted to update the helpdata, so that it didn't report Requires Amphibious Elephants when in fact if one had built that road adjacent to the city, one would be *unable* to build the Miniature Aquarium SmallWonder. Reviewing what was already there led to patch #3836, but I stumbled when it came to adding the negation, as there were four sensible ways to do it, and I'd rather ask which is preferred than just do it the wrong way and need to redo it. Method 1: static grammar, static strings Define four strings in the beginning of insert_requirement(), being Requires that, Prevented by, Applies to, Does not apply to or similar. Rephrase all the helpstrings to start with one of these pairs of strings, and use preq-negated : reqstring ? nreqstring or similar as an additional %s parameter in the cat_snprintf() calls. Those should be full format strings (with '%s' in them) so that translators are free to set order of words (i.e. there can be something *after* %s) as their target language requires. Requires %s, Prevented by %s, Applies to %s, Does not apply to %s. Method 2: static grammer, dynamic strings Define two string variables at the beginning of insert_requirement(), being Requires that and Applies to. Have a single conditional on preq-negated that would reset these strings to something else if it was met. Rephrase all the helpstrings to start with one of these pairs of strings, and use reqstring or appstring as an additional %s parameter. Method 3: dynamic grammar, compound calls Replace the current translated strings with pairs of translated strings depending on whether this is a positive or negative requirement. Decide which to use with preq-negated : _(First String) ? _(Second String) embedded in the cat_snprintf() calls. Method 4: dynamic grammar, conditional calls Duplicate and wrap the snprintf() calls in preq-negated conditionals. Rewrite the negative text in every case. Advice, selection, or recommendation of even better ways to do it welcome. -- Emmet HIKORY - ML ___ Freeciv-i18n mailing list freeciv-i...@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-i18n -- Hubert ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev

[Freeciv-Dev] [patch #3432] Core nation group
Follow-up Comment #2, patch #3432 (project freeciv): I like this solution :) As for saying it's OK not to translate the non-Core nations, I suppose we should encourage translators to work on the names of nations, as they may pop up in the game. We may, however, say that nation legends have a slightly lower priority - they don't appear a lot in the game, but take a looot of time to translate. Obviously, in the ideal situation, all strings should be translated, but with such huge PO files, it may be useful to prioritize some strings over other ones. ___ Reply to this item at: http://gna.org/patch/?3432 ___ Message sent via/by Gna! http://gna.org/ ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev

As for the license itself, I'm aware of the problems with unofficial translations and summaries not being constitutive, and it's not only a problem of whether such an unofficial translation is available for all Freeciv languages, or not. I think we could try to find some balance between legal requirements of adding the license to the distribution and informing users about the copyright/copyleft. After all, the whole idea of a copyleft notice is to inform about user's rights, and I feel we could be doing this to slightly better than now. Follow-up Comment #6, patch #2941 (project freeciv): Thanks for the comments :) Pędnik was in the translation when I took it over and frankly, I never crossed my mind to change it, but your comments make sense. The help section says that space component is something that propels the spaceship and it has two parts, so perhaps let's make it space component = napęd rakiety, propulsion = silnik , fuel component = zbiornik paliwa. It seems reasonable that napęd = silnik + zbiornik paliwa, and we will have a nice equivalent for space component. Learned is slightly problematic, but I wanted to limit the impersonal participles constructions since there quite a lot of sprzedano, zakupiono, wybrano etc. and it was getting a bit stylistically awkward. What about poznaliśmy? Seems more natural in this context. Thanks for noticing the typos. URL: http://gna.org/bugs/?18473 Summary: Copying in the help section is uninformative Project: Freeciv Submitted by: hubkow Submitted on: Tue 09 Aug 2011 12:00:36 AM CEST Category: None Severity: 1 - Wish Priority: 5 - Normal Status: None Assigned to: None Originator Email: Open/Closed: Open Release: Discussion Lock: Any Operating System: Any Planned Release: ___ Details: The Copying heading in the help section is a bit uninformative. When I first saw it the question was Copying what? Where from and where to?. When I entered this section to answer these questions, it attacked me with GPL legalese, which specifies not only copying conditions (buried in dense style understood mainly by lawyers), but lots of other things too (redistribution, republishing, availability of the source code, commercial use, etc.). On top of that the legalese was not even localized in my Polish version of Freeciv. I do understand the rationale for having the full text of GPL in the game and I realize that only the English version is constitutive. Thus, an easy way out is to change the Copying string into License or Copyright to make it more informative. But if we want to have a more human friendly section explaining the legal aspect of GPL licensing (I assume that plain Copying was used instead of somewhat daunting Copyright to suggest user friendliness), perhaps we should also add a brief summary (2-4 sentences) of the GPL before the full text of the license. Such summary would not be constitutive, it could be translated and it would be informative for non-English speakers too. ___ Reply to this item at: http://gna.org/bugs/?18473 ___ Message sent via/by Gna! http://gna.org/ ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev

In the POT from 2.2.5 these are under #: client/gui-gtk-2.0/caravan_dialog.c:102 #: client/gui-win32/dialogs.c:1050 #: client/gui-xaw/dialogs.c:455 #: client/gui-gtk-2.0/caravan_dialog.c:116 #: client/gui-win32/dialogs.c:1061 #: data/Freeciv.in:2266 In the POT from 2.3.0 it's under #: client/gui-gtk-2.0/caravan_dialog.c:102 client/gui-xaw/dialogs.c:455 #: client/gui-gtk-2.0/caravan_dialog.c:116 data/Freeciv.in:2266 A minor thing, really. IMHO, changing the caravan to unit would probably do the trick (I did it in the Polish translation as a makeshift solution). Follow-up Comment #2, patch #2594 (project freeciv): No need to be sorry, were all here to improve the game :) As for Rzymsko-niemiecki, I'll include it in the next revision (I guess that niemiecki should be spelled with the lower case here, as this seems to be more consistent Polish orthographic conventions). As for Lotaryngowie, some Polish philologists told me that both names are acceptable. Lotaryngowie is perhaps less commonly used and connotes early Middle Ages, but the nation description in the game covers the medieval period too. Obviously, you are free to improve on the translation, this is the reason why I published it. Verification and proofreading is always welcome. [Freeciv-Dev] [bug #17606] More barbarian players
Follow-up Comment #4, bug #17606 (project freeciv): Sending a Pirate spaceship to Alpha Centauri? Sounds fun :D In such case we would need to thinka about the flags. Barbarian flags should distinguish various barbarian from each other (Illyrian pirates should have a different flag from Japanese pirates) and from human players. If barbarians are to be playable (and i understand they would use current barbarian/pirate flags), the barbarian flags that we have now won't work - a player taking barbarians would not be able to distinguish his/her own units from AI barbarians. I'm shooting from the hip, so i may miss soething, but a simple solution is to superimpose the a smaller barbarian flag on the nation's flag (example with the Illyrian flag attached). In small images and shield this would probably look like a black dot in the upper left corner, but this should be enough to identify barbarians. The problem is that it might look ugly for some flags (including the Ilyrian). Follow-up Comment #6, bug #17606 (project freeciv): From the translator's point of view, I'm not sure about Guerrillas. The concept behind this word is similar to the Partisan (as unit type) and may cause problem for some in some translations (as well as minor confusion in the English version). Bandits and Outlaws are nice options (Buccaneers, Corsairs, Freebooters could work for sea barbarians if we feel like changing them too). Follow-up Comment #1, bug #17606 (project freeciv): That's a good idea, I've always liked barbarians :) The question is what these barbarian players would be. I guess we need something more specific than Pirates and Barbarians. Following this convention we might be able to add 1-2 more players something like Raiders maybe, but even this name seems a bit far-fetched. Many historical nations that would sort of fit this profile can be taken by human players already (Visigoths, Vikings, etc.) and the one that are not included in the game may be added later on. What about some totally fictional, custom, nations with fictional leaders. like The Pirate Confederacy or The Mountain Barbarians Alliance? Some more off-the-wall names are also an option, as long as they are cannot be mistaken for a real nation. ___ Reply to this item at: http://gna.org/bugs/?17606 ___ Message sent via/by Gna! http://gna.org/ ___ Freeciv-dev mailing list Freeciv-dev@gna.org https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/freeciv-dev
