This file was called simply "." which you can't name a file to. Yes,
you can add a "." to the beginning of a filename but you can't make it
just ".".

"/" is the root of the drive. "." represents the current directory.
And no, you should not be able to rename/name something ".". But it
might not be ".", it might be ". " or " .".

Worth Upgrading?

2008-12-15 Thread Maccountant

Hi, I have a 2003 single 1.25GHz MDD running Tiger w/ 2 MB RAM. It's a
great machine, just a little long in the tooth. I use it as my primary
computer and file server to my 2007 MacBook. I was wondering what
upgrades would be cost-effective, if any, aside from RAM (it's maxed
anyway) and a new drive. My thoughts are either/or a graphics card and
a processor upgrade. Does it make sense to add a Radeon 9600 or 9800?
I also noticed that Sonnet has duel processor upgrades at 1.6 (apx
$450) and 1.8 ($600) GHz for the MDD. Basically these are to make the
machine a little snappier. I do financial and accounting work, some
Photoshop CS2 stuff, a little web page updating, and some video
editing. Also some occasional games like Unreal Tournament. The real
reason I got the Macbook was for using Windows when I need it. The
portability is a nice plus. Does anyone have any experience with any
of these upgrades or have an opinion?

Thanks,
Gary

Re: 10.5.6 Update Available

2008-12-15 Thread Kris Tilford

Something to report:

While the large 377 MB update worked fine on my PPC G5 PowerMac, the
two Intel MacBook Pros I updated with the 190 MB version faired worse.
One failed to reboot, stuck on the spinning thing, and required a
little maintenance before successfully rebooting to seeming
improvement on the Airport connection, which was sorely needed and
expected.

The 2nd MacBook Pro took the update normally, but when it rebooted I
saw an icon at reboot I've never seen before. It faded away after
several seconds and the Desktop presented itself normally then. Since
this isn't my computer, I'm uncertain if this icon was part of the
System software or some 3rd-party application? I rebooted several more
times, and the icon presented itself each time. I looked in the
startup items and Activity monitor and saw nothing "extra" running.

The unknown icon was a little larger than one inch in the center of
the LCD near the end of the boot just after the grey screen ends at
the earliest beginning of the almost instant blue screen to Desktop
transition. It was a icon of a "rope" in the shape of the Apple
Command 4-way cloverleaf symbol. The rope formed the command
cloverleaf, but where it came back to itself in the upper right
quadrant instead of connecting seamlessly to itself, it was tied in a
square knot with loose ends showing on the exterior of the cloverleaf
icon, seeming to indicated "something twisted and tied up"? Anyone
seen this icon at startup before or know what it is?

You can show hidden files with this app: http://www.box.net/shared/d31o3bnamn

To hide them again, use this app: http://www.box.net/shared/c8vebjaj6f

Both of these re-launch the Finder, so close any other open apps first.

For clarity, it *may* be that this is not the normal situation for the '.'
root of the drive. That it was a folder accidently renamed by me instead
(farbeit for me to know about roots of drives though)
Below is what is listed in Disk Inventory X about this folder :

Kind: folder (4)
Size:4.8GB

owner:

Permission: drwx..

have a trendnet kvm switch but can't get it to let my studio 17 apple monitor to work with my G3 and G4

2008-12-15 Thread ll

My goal was to get my Power G3 b...@w and G4 desktop on the same
printer, monitor and mouse. A simple data transfer switch lets me use
one computer. I have a simple usb switch that lets me use the same
mouse and keyboard. I also have a Trendnet KVM Switch I was going to
use for the monitor.
I have used it before to hook a Linux and Windows computer to one
monitor. why didn't it work when I tried to connect my G3 and G4 to
the same Studio 17 monitor. The monitor works on each of them
separately?

Without knowing on what computer you are doing this on it is rather
difficult to speculate. But most times OS X can be transferred this
way using either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. HTH

You need to clone it to another HD or partition using something like
Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

Can you copy (move) 10.4 to different HD?

2008-12-15 Thread Jonas Lopez

Can you copy (move) 10.4 to different HD?

With 10.2 and OS 9 drivers installed, making this a bootable disk, can you
simply move 10.4 from another disk to this disk? From one partition to another?

Are there hidden or invisible files that will be a problem? Are invisible files
included when you copy the whole disk to this disk?

This is in 10.5, but I am pretty sure it works in 10.4 also.

In either list view or column view, select the items you want a list
of, right click or control click on one of them and select Copy xxx
items.

Open a new Text Edit document, make it plain text and paste. It will
paste the list of names.

Note that if the document is set for Rich Text Format, it will try and
place the actual documents.

HTH,

Well if you were to scan it- if it's THAT kind of certificate- you
could do a lot with it if you scanned it! I'm assuming you mean you
can print it, and then you could scan it.

If you have questions about scanning, let me know. Know that you
could scan just as a JPEG at 150-200 dpi resolution, or if the
certificate is mostly text, you could extract the text using an OCR
program if one came with your scanner.

Thankyou everyone!
Thanks to Tony mentioning Inventory X - now I can see 6 gigs I dont need

But for a little clarification...
I am a blacksmith, not a puter xpert, so some of your sincere replies are a
bit over my head, would it be helpful to have new members give a 1-10 rating
of their computer saviness? I'd say 2 or 3 for me.
Through Inventory X I see a folder in my 10.3.9 partition that has no more
name than a 'period'. thats all [ . ]
It has 4.3 gigs of duplicated user and administrator stuff - good grief.
it must have happened a year back when I tried doing some updating after my
puter guru friend got too sick to come out & help anymore. I am confident
this folder can be dumped ( thanks to you folks I have made a ccc backup
now)
However this 4.3 gig folder does not show up in the normal osx folder - how
do I locate it so it can be trashed?
I have more of your emails to reply to yet but think to just send this for
now because it is the biggest problem
thanks so much again,

( I still run our family biz website on Pagemill 3. I have installed a new
seagate 160 GB hard drive inside our Sawtooth, but am waiting on the time to
learn how to move over to it and upgrade to Tiger - as a handcraftsman in

When you say "leapfrog", do you mean just swap them each week? How do
you go about using Time Machine in your backup regime; do you keep
that *third TM* attached to your main HD non stop? AND/OR *somehow*
backup your 2 externals to it or with TM - or??? If I make clone
backups on both external drives and then {with lots of outside
assistance!} determine the ideal method to update each of them on a
regular basis, what is the advantage of using TM - especially for a
moron like ME?
Any elaboration is appreciated!

Many thanks,

And yes, this is a long, LONG standing basic failure of the

way onto a RAID unit that a clone backup won't be vulnerable to?

How is this different than a clone - and it's subsequent backups?

Is it true that you can NOT boot from a TM backup?

So when re-connecting the "alternate" {external #2} drive, what type
of backup do I select; ie, incremental, update, etc - or do i need to
"reclone" the drive again; I absolutely want the ability to be able to
boot from whatever external I have ... as you can see - my luck isn't
so hot!

I see the GM unit from OWC will automatically update the other drive
in the enclosure should one need to be replaced. Is that the same
thing? Beyond that, should i get a RAID1 unit, what is involved in
getting the freshly swapped drive to accurately - and *SIMPLY* - back
up my internal HDD?

I'd prefer that also - but don't know if it will always be practical,
so I'm trying to figure options.

No matter how much I've read on this, I keep seeing the phrase "RAID
is not a substitute for backup"; even though I'm a little confused by
that statement, it *seems* to be beginning to make sense to me?!

Thanks again so much for your input; it goes a long, Long way towards
peace of mind - especially now when everything is just falling apart;
as an aside, I was having trouble opening the combination Kensington

couldn't do a thing on the cable. Kensington is GREAT - a new lock is
*already* on the way - no charge - and they will pay for the removal
of the old one - even covering a house call! I've had nothing but

The simplest is via an excursion to /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
(This seems long but is quite simple)

Open the desired directory in Finder.

start terminal

type the letters cd followed by a space.

Drag the little folder icon from the finder window to the line in
terminal that you were just typing on.

In Terminal hit return.

Now type the following:

ls > directorylist.txt

(You can call directorylist.txt anything you want)

This will create a text file with a listing of each file in the
directory on it's own line.

basic OS X finder question

2008-12-15 Thread joe
I've got a G4 Sawtooth running 10.4.11

Is there a way to copy the filenames in a given directory? I don't
want to copy or move the files, but I'd like to get all the file
names to put them in a text file.

I've roamed around Mac's help and I'm just not finding the way to do
this. I'll bet it's something really simple that I'm just not finding.

Remember, I asked for the Combo Update, because I have quite a number
of systems of different levels, and because I intentionally install
from a CD, not via the 'Net.

However, for an up-to-date 10.5.5, the specific update to 10.5.6 is
indeed quite modest.

I now have 10.5.6 running on one of my Hackintoshes. No issues so far.

Or export it from Appleworks by saving as an RTF or other form of
document, or convert it using MacLinkPlus- if you have access to any
of those options.

Appleworks is its OWN thing, unfortunately, but you should be able to

The available Combo Update, suitable for all platforms, is 669 MB.

It is my policy to download the Combo Update, and then to burn it to
a CD.

Fortunately, this very large update will fit on a CD.

Thereafter, I update my systems, in turn, from the CD.

10.5.6 Update Available

2008-12-15 Thread Kris Tilford

10.5.6 is available.

I used Software Update, it was 377 MB for my PPC G5. The MacBook Pro
Intel version was 190 MB.

I'm using a non-Apple 802.11n card (Netgear WN311B) that requires
patching with the bcm43xx_enabler_0.5.1pre.sh.zip to be recognized as
Airport. After the update I had no wireless connection and needed to
redo the patch. The patch worked fine, the card is recognized as

Are you subscribed to dot-mac, and have you changed your settings

I've been in the same situation trying to find sound -- even called a
neighbour to help track down a sound one night that may or may not
have been coming from the computer (surround sound speakers really
work!) Swiss cheese memory doesn't remember what it was that was

Clarification:

"IOKitWaitQuiet" is timing out.

Then something else ...Responder fails while waiting for IOKit to
quiesce ...

Something like that.

I'm also experiencing my Mail outgoing not always going out on first
try, with my Yikes! Tiger 10.4.11 machine connected to the same
network. Maybe a flaky ISP response is causing the QS 10.5.5 to
hiccup? Using a new Rosewill 10/100/1000 PCI card there ... onboard
ethernet 10/100 in the Yikes!. Westell 327W DSL Modem/Router.

After a Nuke & Pave (10.5.5) ... QS made its way back to Blue Screen ...

2008-12-15 Thread insightinmind
On my QS Dual 1GHz, I did a Nuke & Pave, returning the system to 10.5.5.

Along the way, everything appeared to be fine:

Installed my M-Audio driver, waited a few restarts ...
Installed my Logitech Wireless KB & Mouse driver, waited a few
restarts ...
Installed my Yamaha motif es8 USB-MIDI driver, waited a few restarts ...

Everything appeared fine.

Now after a couple of days down, on Restart, I'm "back" to getting a
blue screen on Startup. It eventually resolves into the Desktop, but
my M-Audio driver didn't load, and I noticed my wireless mouse
battery needed recharging.

After replacing the mouse batteries ...

"IOKit" is shown as where the system pauses because it doesn't
"quiesce" ... looking at the system restart using command-V.

I did shut down my system without turning off the Yamaha motif es8,
which was connected by USB-MIDI a few days ago.

Trying to access the Apple System Profiler system log is causing a kp
again.

Suggestions? Is the occasional dead mouse adding an unnecessary
complication?

Other thoughts?

Well there's also swap space. Try logging out then back in again. Even
with no apps running there is still swap space being used.

Open Terminal and enter the following command:

sudo du -hd1 /

then Hit return and enter your password.

This will tell you where everything is.

You can change the one to a two or other number (sudo du -hd2 /) and see
more details.

Note: it will take a while to complete this command.

I am, as you noted, a fan of La Cie. They're a multi-national that
has always been Mac friendly. Not positive, but I think they may be
owned by Seagate. The La Cie boxes I've used (mine & clients) have
been perfect performers - fast and reliable. Never had a box (power
supply, interface board, etc) fail. Had one mechanism die, but it
was 4+ years old and badly abused. All ours came with Seagate
mechanisms, but I've heard from a few folx on the LEM lists that
theirs has WD mechanisms; not verified. The d2 quadra box has a
solid metal feel to it. It's foot is removable, so it is happy
horizontally or vertically. My 500 GB is near totally silent. The
only way I can tell it's running is from a slight purr and the darned
big blue Hal light on the front. That light is my only gripe. Oh,
it came with Retrospect - but *shrug* I use SuperDuper and CCC.

Like Seagate, Hitachi also has a very good reputation for drive
mechanisms these days. The only vendor I suggest avoiding is WD
drives over 300 GB in size.

WRT cables... the ones that came with my d2 quadra were two and three
feet. Moot, IMO, as I just use my regular cables.

Buying advice -- just be careful of cheap cheap dealios. Inexpensive
is ok. Cheap is a warning light. When it gets too cheap, you need
to start looking for uber fine print that says it's a refirb and the
warranty is in seconds, not years. I'm not knocking refirbs per se -
I use a lot of 'em without problemos. Factory refirbs (with longer
warranties) are fine. But store "refirbs" with <30 days --- ack!!!

As to where to buy... I've bought from OWC, Amazon, Outpost, and
eCost. All good. eCost has wonderful deals - but you gotta watch
that fine print for refirbs.

HTH,
- Dan.

I use a program called Disk Inventory X ( http://www.derlien.com/ )
that's great at giving a graphical representation of where my HD space
is being used up. It shows everything, including hidden folders.

Many programs play alert sounds. Mail is the first one that comes to
mind.

What is your system doing just before the sound?

Try quitting any unused programs.

Re: Missing 6 GB of space in OSX partition

2008-12-15 Thread MIKO ..

Show your hidden files and folders. You can use OnyX to do that (go
to versiontracker.com- get panther version)... Look to see if you
have any "core" files to delete. Moreover, in general, with UNIX
files hidden, you can't just simply add up the visible files to get
total disk usage.

A good way to find large files is to temporarily change view options
in all folders in LIST view to "calculate all sizes"- then wait as
this slowly happens and do a descending sort on the SIZE column in
order to see your largest file folders and files.

Usually my largest waste-of-space files are in the Adobe folder.
Especially the thumbnail database for Bridge.

Check the Adobe folder in Application support for an overgrown camera
raw database or a temp file that didn't go away when Photoshop closed
down.

Try to store your photos on an external drive and if you use Adobe
bridge to view them, make sure that you point the camera raw database
off the main drive or de-centralize it.

If you are low on disk space while Photoshop is open, but get it back
when you close Photoshop, then try moving the Photoshop "scratch disk"
to an external drive.

Try to store your iTunes music library on an external drive.

Hope these basic starting ideas help.

You're not seeing the private directories not shown in the finder, but
in general those shouldn't be taking up that much space. The only
thing that can grow is the logs. Run Onyx or MacJanitor to clear the
logs.

Emptied the trash lately? Have you had failed optical disk burns?

I make a backup copy (clone) of my drive on my Yikes! to an external
FW HD connected to my QS 2002 via my Network. Both machines are
connected to my home network via hardwire / ethernet cables.

I use CCC 3.1.3 (new version does nicely across a network). See:
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

There are other ways to connect and copy experienced others may be
inclined to share.

Alert sounds from where?

this is truly embarrassing. A while back, I "assigned" an alert sound
to something, and now for some reason I can't remember what
application/function I assigned it to? Question: Is there a quick way

A hint: it's common nickname is VileFault...don't use if you value
your data. What it does is turn your entire home folder into an
encrypted disk image that the system opens on login. On logout, it
closes it.

Hmmm...and if something goes wrong and your computer crashes???
