Those aren't the right gems then. If they're small and blak they aren't

the Silver Crest adventure. Those are from the Runeskin prelude scenarios.
Like I said, the gems for the Sword of Merzekk are Cloudy Blue Gemstones.

[Audyssey] attention friends and mailing lists. problems with email

2008-01-27 Thread Darren Harris
hi you guys,

for the mailing lists, i apologise if this is off topic. but thought would
post this just in case the mods decided to remove me from various lists
because of what's been happening.
it looks like i've got problems with my email. just letting you know. for
some of today, my girlfriend hasn't been able to send emails yet i have been
receiving others. if you have sent me any emails and if you get a message
saying that basically i don't exist, i do, but for what ever reason the
mailer system seems to be having a fit. i have no idea what's going on. i am
getting some emails, but i must admit my emails have been quiet. so i don't
think this is a localised thing. if you've have for what ever reason tried
to send me emails, then please bare this in mind. if any mailing lists that
i belong to keep bouncing, then this is the reason. my apologies. it's
nothing i've done, it must be something with the mailing system itself. so
please don't remove me, just please be mindful.

many thanks all. like i say to the mailing lists i apologise for the seeming
off topic post, but am doing a multi post thus i felt it necessary.

Re: [Audyssey] 2007 Accessible game of the year

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ron,
I think if we do this we should publicize the results as much as
possible before kicking it off. For example, get the announcements ready
and publish it in the Audyssey Mag, the Audio Game forum, here and if
anyone wants to spread it to other gaming lists to please do so.
It may take a couple of weeks for me and Raul to get the web site ready
for voting, and we might want to hold off until March to actually do the
voting to coincide with the next release of the mag. What do you think?

Ron Schamerhorn wrote:
 Hi Tom

I'd be up to doing the calculations. It might be better to say announce
them in March or such to provide voting time. And we could always publicize
it through the audio games forum and or other appropriate lists. To get a
real sample of the true totals. I don't even recall hearing anything
through the old grapevine as it were.

Re: [Audyssey] Views On Games was Out of the games dimension

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Wow! I wasn't even using computers in 1981 let alone programming them.
Grin
That just goes to show how far we have come since the first personal
computers made their appearance for the average person. I can clearly
remember what it was like back around 1984 when there were basically two
choices. There was the IBM PC with PC Dos 3.x, AKA MS Dos, and the Apple
A2-E with Apple Works. In terms of the average user the people I knew
had Apples because the IBM systems were both too expensive and anything
before PC Dos 5.0 sucked lemons. Not only that, but I thought the Echo
was just peachy until I found Jaws for Dos and the Dectalk PC.
As for when I started writing games I was a late bloomer. I have been
using and working with computers almost all my life, but I didn't
actually begin programming until I reached college. That would have been
around 1997 or 1998 or so.

Jim Kitchen wrote:

and Homer on a Harley (Eval Kneval) I then got my first talking computer in
December of 1989. It was a NEC 286 with an Accent S A running Jaws for dos
version 1. The first program that I wrote was a braille reference guide. I
wrote it in January 1990 while at the Cleveland Sight Center. Anna Karr my
braille instructor helped me to make sure that it was all correct. Then I
wrote black jack and draw poker. Those games were on the Jaws web site slash
 BBS.

No, I did not like the bookshelf game Futile. I very much liked the
bookshelf game Twixt though. I think that my Brother and Sister cheated at
Futile because they couldn't beat me at chess or Twixt. grin

I'm afraid I didn't know all of your games were released in 2007 (I thought
some were released earlier on), but certainly they should be up for
voting - as should Jedi quake. also, so that new releases are recognized
in future, feel free to post announcements either here or on audiogames.net

part I'll try and check the 7-128 site a bit more regularly.

Second, Thomas. Actually 7-218 Software released 15 accessible games in 2007:

Inspector Cyndi in Newport - Death Nell
Inspector Cyndi in Newport - The Forgetful Sailor
Inspector Cyndi in Newport - Unfinished Symphony
Inspector Cyndi in Newport - When Irish Spies are Smiling
Inspector Cyndi in Newport - Fall from Grace
Inspector Cyndi in Newport - Lights Out
 Kim's Game
 Orchestra
 Definitions
 Synonyms and Antonyms
 Crambles

 Word Builder
 Longest Word
 Completion

These all run from within the 7-128 Software Game Book; but they are
 separate games.
 All are production, non-Beta, releases.

Somewhere mid-year we released demo versions of the games and the Game Book.
But those were in addition to our already shipped production releases.

Re: [Audyssey] BSC GAMES product keys

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
Yes, that is correct. The replacement keys doesn't mean four keys to put
on four different computers, but four replacement keys for the same
computer. In the event you get rid of your old computer and buy a new
one your replacement key license will transfer to the new computer, and
no longer be valid for the old computer.
Right now I am faced with the very issue we are discussing. I just
picked up a brand new Compaq laptop real cheap, and will be moving most
if not all my games over to the new laptop. Since the keys are only
allowed for one computer I either have to move my licenses or purchase a
second license to keep a copy on my old laptop and a copy on my new laptop.

nicol wrote:
 Hi list
First of all, I resolved my problem where I couldn't play all levels of

It has been said twice on this list that bsc games gives you 4 product keys
each calendar year to use on a second, third and fourth computer.
I just want to put this straight, its not true. Bsc games gives 4
replacements, not 4 product keys .
I sent them a mail asking if I can get a second product key to play pipe on
my mom's pc when I visit her once a month.
Thom randle responded that they can't allow it for me only.
When they gave me my replacement key, the product keys policy is at the
bottom of that message and there it says that during a calendar year you
can have up to 4 replacements. There is a big difference between 4 keys and
 4 replacements.
So I suppose each time I request a replacement I have to give a valid
reason, because bsc games said that when formatting a hard drive the game
should work, its only when changing operating systems that a new product key
 is needed.
So at the end of the day those who want 4 keys to give their friends, no
one can stop them. How certain can bsc games be that the person has a new
computer or operating system and that he is not simply requesting another
key to give to a friend.
Even if the person gives a valid reason, even if the person makes up
something, pretending that he changed to a different operating system, bsc
games is not there with him to check if its true.
Bsc games made it clear that its against their policy to give each customer
more than one key, they only issue replacements in the case of a new
computer or changing to an operating system.

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I answered Shane's question off list, but I want to share the solution
here so others don't make the same mistake. The Montezuma's Return
manual as well as the USA Games FAQ page specifically state the proper
order of installation is:

1. Install .NET Framework 3.0.
2. Install DirectX August 2007.
3. Install USA Games product or products.

Failing to install our games in this exact order will cause our games to
crash and fail. The reason is DirectX will not properly install and
register it's .NET components unless a working and properly registered
.NET Framework is installed first. Unfortunately, this tends to be our
number one problem amung new USA Games customers, and we strongly
recommend reading our docs before doing an install the first time.

I don't think I have met a programmer that doesn't reuse code over and

initially wrote Montezuma's Return I planned to use the games base code
to create several classic side-scrollers using the basic same code but
changing the data. Now, that I have decided to invest in creating games
in Java I am inwardly growning as that requires hours and hours of
rewriting existing code to get the same code base I have in C# .NET.

Hi Darren,
Actually, the moderators aren't responcible for removing people from the

list when their emails begin bouncing. The list management software,

mailman will disable that subscription, and tell the moderators after
the fact.

[Audyssey] reused code - Re: Accessible Game releases, 2007

2008-01-27 Thread John Bannick
Charles,

It's not really cheating.

In fact, reusable code is the Holy Grail of commercial programming.

When I finished the first version of our stuff, my late wife asked me, How
much of it is reusable?

I responded, None of it.

She opined, Then you've failed.

So I rewrote it. And am grateful for the prod, because our company lives on
top of that reusable architecture.

Thomas is right. Rewriting all of his C# and .NET common code will be a lot
of work.

However, generally a rewrite results in improved code because you get a
chance to fix things that have bugged you forever.

Re: [Audyssey] GMA Games

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jeremy,
The GMA Games will work on Windows Vista provided you do one of the
following solutions I have written up for Windows Vista.
If you install the GMA games to your local directory tree like
c:\users\Jeremy\Games\GMA
All of the GMA and PCS Games will work correctly on Windows Vista.
Otherwise they could have some problems with User Account Control.
Another alternative is to start the GMA Games as administrator by
pressing the context menu key on the game's icon, arrowing to run as
administrator, and pressing enter. That will bypass User Account Control
on the game in question.
Finally, I don't recommend doing this, but you can turn User Acount
Control off which will allow most older applications to run ok under Vista.
As far as new programs GMA is currently working on a new mud client.
From what I hear it is suppose to be really really good.

Jeremy Gilley wrote:
Does anyone hear from the programmer from GMA Games?
I have not seen anyone speak of there games, and I was just curious if any
 of them are VISTA ready.
I used to play them when i had windows M,E, but I have noticed that they
have had the same games out for a while now with no news if they are working
on something new or not. Just wondering.

 Hi,
I answered Shane's question off list, but I want to share the solution
here so others don't make the same mistake.

 Shane Davidson wrote:
Ok, after installing direct X august 2007 and dot net framework 3.0 from
the usagames.us website, I installed both STFC and montazoomas return on
this new installation of windows with dotnet3.0 and directX august 2007,
when starting either game I get an error report dialogue with both send
 and don't send buttons.
Any idea why this would be happening?
Remember dot net framework 3.0 and directX august 2007 are both
 installed
 thanks.

I noticed on a lot of new programs that if you install them, if you don't
meet the requirements it will not install until you do, and some even
install the stuff for you before the main program install. Why not just
compile the game with the DX and .Net and have them install before the game
so that way no one can't say it won't install?

Just a Thought. And Yes I know the installer would be bigger, but oh well.

Re: [Audyssey] reused code - Re: Accessible Game releases, 2007

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
On the contrary reusing code is not cheating. It is actually one of the
core principles behind object oriented languages like Java, Python, and
C# .NET. Code reuse is one of the major principles, foundations, drilled
into new programming students heads when they enter a tech school or
university.
For example, object oriented languages use a technique called
inheritance. Inheritance allows a programmer to expand or extend a piece
of existing code to meet the demands of a new program. This saves lots
of time because the base functionality of the
existing code remains the same, but is improved or specialized by the
new code extension.
Another cool feature of modern programming languages is known as
polymorphism. With this technique you can create several methods with
the same name but different parameters. The compiler or runtime
environment will be able to figure out which method you are using and
correctly execute your code. This symplifies things by allowing you to
use the same code but differently on a case by case basis.
Software companies that are in it for the long hall tend to create
development kits which are typically core libraries or applications that
can be used to quickly put together new applications with a common
framework. Often times development kits can be based on other
development kits that might be based on more lower level development
kits to symplify or specialise a development kit for a specific need.
For example let us say USA Games creates a sdk for game programming.
That development kit might be based on the .NET Framework and Managed
DirectX which are development kits from Microsoft based on lower level
development kits like Win32 and the DirectX com components.
All of it is possible through object oriented design that can be
extended and reextended as needed. Everytime you extend an applications
code it gets more specialised and yet still has the base functionality
at the top of the code tree.
For example, let us say we make a class called starship. This holds all
the generic data for a starship. Well, we need something more specific
so we create a class called Federation which Extends starship with some
specific features of Federation starships. However, the Federation has
all kinds of starships so we need to subclass them in To Galaxy Class,
Defiant Class, Sovereign Class, Constitution Class, etc. If we want to
add some enemy ships we could extend the Starship class by adding a
class called Romulan, and then subclasses of Romulan ships. Do you see
how the code tree works?

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi William,
First, I'd like to point out that only a couple of sounds were used from
Tomb Raider. More specifically the death, jump, and pain sounds for
Angela Summers were taken from Tomb Raider II. However, I could easily
remove them upon request from Edos or Core Design without too much
difficulty. That is a totally different tthing than outright copying an
entire game detail for detail.
Second, weather or not the owners of the copyrights know about it or not
copying a game is still illegal based on current copyright law. There
are ways of doing something similar to the copyrighted work without
directly violating the copyrighted material itself. one way is creating
your own work with different characters, slightly different story line,
and the same kind of action and adventure.
Third, as for the sound effects most of the effects are common everyday
effects anyone can create. For example, the gun sounds, foot step
sounds, wolves, dogs, mummies, etc are all sound effects anyone can
create or obtain through legal means. In fact, some sounds like the 44
Magnum I have found an effect that was better than the original one.
Mine actually has a echo and report that sounds more realistic.
Finally, as far as the music goes I do plan in offering the original TR
music for my Tomb Raider game, but under a different license. If you
don't like the stock music with my Tomb Hunter game you can download the
music and sound pack, agree to the license, and install it. However, I
won't ship the music with the game do to copyrights.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrighs

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Not only that but I think there is too much focus on having the exact
Tomb Raider trademark and the Lara Croft character. I plan to leave the
sounds open so the game can be openly modded with a Tomb Raider theme
music and sounds if someone really really wants to do that. I just can't
officially support that for legal reasons.
I admit after I write the game I plan to mod the game myself, for my own
private use, but the commercial version everyone else will get won't
include the TR music and any reference to Lara Croft.

for newbies in my personal oppinion. Cybersfear might not be, though,
it all depends on personal oppinion here.

Also, I would try mushclient because it's just all around better. Get
it, as well as the plugin for jaws at http://www.allinaccess.com.
MushClient is now free, so yay.

[Audyssey] Mud Clients was Re: Mac Mud clients

2008-01-27 Thread Orin
I changed the subject line to reflect the posts, because everyone
started discussing windows based clients again. Sadly I think I'm the
only one who likes mudding and has an interest but also has a Mac as
well. Somehow, we must make muds accessible for us VoiceOver users,
because I'm starting to miss it. Muds being read with the system
speech and unable to control it is certainly not mudding.

 Hi Charles,
It is a sad fact that a large majority of users buy products and begin
using the product without even looking at the supplied owner's manual.
It is also a statistical fact those same users that didn't read the
owner's manual are amung the first to begin emailing or calling tech
support wanting help even though the answer is right there in the
manual. I can understand if something is confusing, but a lot of the
time it just comes down to end user laziness.

Re: [Audyssey] reused code - Re: Accessible Game releases, 2007

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Yes, exactly. I realise I have a lot of work ahead of me but it gives me
a chanse to improve upon my earlier code ideas and fix things I missed
along the way. Perhaps put in more error trapping, error logging, etc so
the new engine is more stable. Not only that but the Java language seams
especially designed for extendable programs and code reuse.
One thing I am really falling in love with in Java is Java beans. A bean
can be anything from a program utility or an entire program that can be
extended or included into a larger program to quickly and rapidly build
new and more powerful applications. It is the lazy coders dream. Just
include it and suddenly you have saved yourself x amount of work by
including that one bean.
Cheating? Heck no. Just a programmers wishes come true. Every programmer
loves to have ready to use code at his or her command.

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kuvvosh and all,
I was just discussing this off list with someone else and the reason the
DirectX and .NET Frameworks were not installed with my games is it will
add around 110 MB to every game install. A game like Montezuma's Return,
which is 29 MB, would instantly become a 139 MB download. That uses more
server drive space, more bandwidth, and would be difficult for those on
dialup to download.
I guess what gets me about this entire thing is including it with every
game would be unnecessary if people would just read the documentation
first That is all that is required.. Though, I guess developers have to
make up for others inability to do the obvious.

Kuvvosh wrote:

so that way no one can't say it won't install?

Just a Thought. And Yes I know the installer would be bigger, but oh well.

[Audyssey] Inform Problem

2008-01-27 Thread ari
Hi all,
I can't use the inform interpreter that comes with Time's Ashes to play
inform games, as it won't read the whole screen when I'm reading with the
jaws cursor routed, I'm using JAWS 8. I've been using Winfrotz TTS, but I
don't like using it at all, as I prefer reading my games with jaws, because
I can get things to be spelled, I also like reviewing the screen in bits,
not just having the whole thing rush-read to me. This problem is weird,
because I never had this problem on the old pc, I'm not sure what's wrong,
the longer I play, the text in my inform window becomes confused, example,
when I type in a command, the text at the bottom will be text I'd received
from a command I'd used ages ago! What's wrong?

Indeed tom, the box set is great and has I think every appearence of Davros
in Doctor who, both in the original series and in later audio plays,
which is cool!

My friend is incredibly generous!

As has been said before, Daleks in an audiogame would be great, though
interestingly enough, unlike startrek and just about every single successful
film series out there, there haven't I think been many doctor who games even
in the mainstream.

I remember a particularly abysmal side scroller on the old Comador amigar,
and I once heard of an interactive story game, but other than that I don't
think there have been many at all!

then again, with the new series becoming so popular, it wouldn't surprise me
if there ends up being a game released as well.

Beware the Grue!

 Hi Charles,
On the contrary reusing code is not cheating.

 Hi Shane,
Yep, time to follow your own advice. Smile
Just for the record I am guilty of doing this now and then myself. Often
times I think I know what I am doing so I don't look at the docs right
away, and get in trouble. Then, I read the docs and find out where I
goofed up, and am able to fix the issue.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi William,
Unfortunately, it is near impossible for a small time developer to get
legal permission to use big name copyrights. Especially, million dollar
copyrights such as Star Wars, Star Trek, and Tomb Raider. I've already
been down that road with very nasty and negative results to show for it.
A little over a year ago I began trying to contact Lucas Film Limited's
copyright office. Getting the proper contact information itself was a
pain to get, and I kind of think they don't want just anyone applying
for copyright permission. I finally wrote them a very detailed email of
why I wanted the copyright, what I was doing, and when I finally heard
back from someone the response was pretty clear I didn't have a prayer
of getting a legal license for Star Wars.
There were several reasons that killed my chances in obtaining a legal
license to use the Star Wars copyrights and trademarks. Let me fill you
in on those details.
First, you need to understand these guys have big ideas about making
money. The Lucas Licensing department made it very clear to me that they
only license to major companies that can afford the licensing fees.
Usually toy, book, and game companies that have millions of dollars in
change to toss around. I simply did not have the millions of dollars to
compete with Hasbro, Bantam Double Day Publishing, etc who spend
millions in retaining their legal licenses for Star Wars products.
Second, I discovered that Lucas Licensing offers only exclusive
licenses. What that means that only one company at a time can own a
license for that type of product. For example, because Hasbro Toys owns
the license for Star Wars and Indiana Jones action figures Mattel Inc
can not apply for a license to create a similar product.
As a result because Lucas Arts holds the video game license for Star
Wars and Indiana Jones video games USA Games can not acquire the rights
to create a similar product. Even though my games would not be for the
general public, even though Lucas Arts games are not accessible, I can't
qualify for a license under the terms of the license agreement.
Finally, you need to understand there isn't enough blind gamers around
to get large companies interest in taking up the cause of accessible
gaming. Our mailing list has about 200 active members at any given time,
and that number is a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of
people buying mainstream Star Wars products like action figures, books,
movies, comics, posters, etc. In the scheme of things 200 people just
don't register as a viable market.
As far as the Tomb Raider copyrights goes I haven't contacted the
copyright holders for permission mainly because I am not too hopeful of
acquiring the licenses I want. The existing Tomb Raider products such as
the movies, toys, and games have sold millions world wide. A small time
developer such as myself has nothing to offer the copyright holder.
For example, let us say i could license Tomb Raider for 25% of my sales.
That means if I sold $1000 in sales $250 goes to the copyright holder
which is mere change to those guys. Almost not even worth collecting
from me. However, to USA Games that $250 could be spent on sound effects
for a new game, or I could spend it on my wife's car insurance bill.
Even if I could get the legal rights to do the real Tomb Raider deal
that $250 would be best spent in my pocket for things I want or need
rather than giving it away to an ungreatful copyright holder who can do
without my money.

william lomas wrote:
simple then, smile, attempt to get the permission if that doesn't work

I noticed on a lot of new programs that if you install them, if you don't
meet the requirements it will not install until you do, and some even
install the stuff for you before the main program install. Why not just
compile the game with the DX and .Net and have them install before the
game
so that way no one can't say it won't install?

Just a Thought. And Yes I know the installer would be bigger, but oh
well.

Re: [Audyssey] reused code - Re: Accessible Game releases, 2007

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Cara,
Yes. Not only that, but more universal languages like Java are more
centralized arounda common framework and code base than are Microsoft's
.NET languages. A game written in Java may only require the Sun JRE to
run provided you haven't tied into OpenAL, DirectX, or some other
third-party development API. To create the same game in C# .NET at a
minimum you need to install the .NET Framework, DirectX or XNA, and
optionally Sapi voices. In Comparison .NET stuff kind of bites.
I know FreeTTS doesn't sound quite as good as some commercial voices for
Mac, Linux, and Windows do but I have noticed that it is very reliable.
Sure it takes a little time to load with a Java cold start, but if it
is warm started FreeTTS is as responsive, fast, and works just as good
as Eloquence is with Jaws. In fact, it might even work a little better
with Java 6, and it can be run on Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Cara Quinn wrote:

There are I believe a total of five, and you need them for the Demonscourge
hammer, which is he only weapon that can defeat Runeskin. The first four are
i the prelude scenarios in Dor-Droat, Talinus, Trithik and Port Hallik.
Dor-Droat is i Eastern Tysa near the Withering Wood. Once you've copleted
the four Prelude scenarios there's one more scenario in Trithik where you
fight Runeskin briefly. Just se the gems as an item in battle to damage him.
Then the main events are in the village of Silverwysp near Tryndmoor.

 Hi Jim,

Re: [Audyssey] montazoomas return and stfc both won't start

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Cara,
Well, the only problem with your suggestion is that I would require
Microsoft Setup Installer to do my installs with rather than using
InnoSetup. InnoSetup is a nice installer, but last I checked it can not
look for .NET Framework dependancies and update the .NET Framework from
the web or cd based on installed version. It is also unable to look for
specific requirements such as the Managed DirectX components for .NET
applications.
As you might expect in order to get an up to date version of Microsoft
Setup Installer I would have to purchase Visual Studio Pro 2008 which I
no longer have the funds for. I just went out and purchased a new
laptop, correction, two new laptops for my wife and I with the earnings
from Montezuma's Return. Other than not having MicrosoftSetup Installer
support I have found Visual Studio Express 2008 fits all of my business
needs.
The rest of the funds from Montezuma's Return have been alocated for
sounds, music, and other USA Games needs.

Cara Quinn wrote:
Thomas, an alternative might be to have the installer check for the

A more permanent solution to running it as admin is to do the following:

 It's not really cheating.

In fact, reusable code is the Holy Grail of commercial programming.

When I finished the first version of our stuff, my late wife asked me,
 How
 much of it is reusable?

 I responded, None of it.

 She opined, Then you've failed.

So I rewrote it. And am grateful for the prod, because our company lives
 on
 top of that reusable architecture.

Thomas is right. Rewriting all of his C# and .NET common code will be a
 lot
 of work.

However, generally a rewrite results in improved code because you get a

also worth noting that newer dotnets will require directx to be reloaded, I
usually install dotnet 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 and then get all updates and load
them, and once very update is loaded including service packs and the like I
then install directx.
you can do it that way but if you do it just loading dx, first before dotnet or
after you have loaded dotnet and you update it or install another dotnet set
then you invalidate the install.
However I usually install directx9 first, load all the dotnet and reinstall, as
ita easier and faster to reinitualise dx on all the dotnets rather then the
wait to install everything.

 Hi,
The Windows registry? What could we possably have to talk about that
involves the registry? It is nothing more than a place where settings
and other application data is stored as keys.

Hi Kuvvosh,
Well, as I stated in my last message to do what you are asking requires
that I obtain Microsoft Setup Installer which can do that and more.
However, you probably don't realise to get Microsoft Setup Installer I
must buy Visual Studio Pro 2008 which costs around $700 USD./ I no
longer have $700 to buy it, and I won't buy it for that price.
InnoSetup, which is free, works well enough as long as end users
remember to install my games in the proper order. As it happens once I
get things moved to Java DirectX and .NET won't be a major issue any
more anyway.
I also had a real need for a set of new laptops. My wife's laptop was an
old laptop running Windows 98, and it really neded updated to something
new. My old laptop was beginning to have some technical issues like over
heating, rebooting for no reason, and half the time the cd drive
wouldn't read disks. In other words I think it was about shot. Not to
mention I baught it used, and it wasn't exactly in great condition when
I got it.
So my wife and I agreed we should take some of the earnings from

Hi Shaun,
Ahem... There is no need to install .NET 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 all together.
It is my understanding that the .NET 3.0 Framework is backward
compatible with .NET 1.1 and 2.0 applications. At least with the version
that came with Windows Vista the pre-installed 3.0 framework works fine
with 1.1 and 2.0 .NET based apps out of the box. The only update that
you might want to grab is .NET 3.5 which is so new not a lot of .NET
stuff is using yet.

I don't know, I just hated the BNS voice. Maybe it's because the Echo was
the first synthe I ever heard, so I've got a soft spot for it. But the BNS'
voice just irritated the heck out of me. Come to think of it so does the
Keynote voice, wich is one reason I don't use the Braille Note. I
particularly hated it when playing some of the games you could get for the
BNS. I remember there was a Chess game and a Blackjack game, but I hated
them because of the voice. Granted it was sort of cool at first but after a
while it just got on my nerves.

 Hi Bryan,
Are you kidding? I hated the Echo's voice. I would take Braille N Speak
voice over Echo any day. Though, my opinion might be based on the fact I
spent a lot of time after going blind using a Braille N Speak. It was
like a part of me all through school and college.
You see, when I first started losing my vision the teachers first put me
on the braille writer. I expressed almost from the beginning I wanted to
use a computer instead of this clunky, metal, old contraption. They of
course told me I needed to use it to learn braille and become a braille
 user. Yada, yada, yada.
Well, finally I managed to get my way and the school provided me with a
new device called a braille and Speak from Blazie Engineering. I used
the school's for a while, and got my local Lion's club to see how
wonderful a device it was so they baught me one for school and hopefully
college. After I got my own BNS it went everywhere with me. On the bus,
to school, to the store, on vacations, you name it. It was almost like
borg implanted to my person, and I didn't give it up until I managed to
get a laptop with JFW and Eloquence on it around 1998 or so.

 Bryan wrote:

 speech quality.

Hi Charles,
Oh, I see. Yeah, to an outsider the registry might seam pretty
complicated and mysterious. However, I've been working with it for about
three months and I now have a pretty good grasp of how every thing is
organized, and how to manually add, change, and remove keys. It really
actually is simpler than a lot of people believe once you get the basic
concept of where everything is and how it works. That said, I wouldn't
recommend playing around in there if you don't know what you are doing.
For example, in Windows Vista there is a very annoying Window that comes
up called the Windows Welcome Center. You can not turn it off, because
Microsoft doesn't want you to. Instead they would rather have it in the
way annoying you as you work. Well, I went into the registry with my new
found know-how and I am no longer bothered with the Welcome Center
coming up every time I start my computer. It is a dead Windows service.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrighs

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
It really all depends on how much the company wants to protect their
copyrights. Some copyrights like Packman are still technically valid,
but they also have sort of fallen out of day to day gaming view.
Something like Tomb Raider or Star Wars is still quite active, and might
be a bigger copyright to protect.
The only card we have as blind gamers is to pull the I am blind and poor
me trick. Generally, we don't want to play the old sympathy card, but it
is the only one that might cover our butts. Anyone want to do it and try
and get away with it with Lucas, Edos, or anyone else?

Igor Knew about this problem. one of the beta testers helped to edit his
game documentations, but I think he himself doesn't understand the game
especially galaxy ranger, so couldn't make much changes. He kept asking for
the games to be made easier. There are other good testers who could
understand the instructions and played the games well, but most of us
English is not our first language so couldn't help much in that area. I
think the game instructions need to be rewritten and not just edit a few
lines.

I completely agree about the demo restrictions. Told Igor about it. He just
kept it in mind.

 them
because of the dumb mistakes they make, such as not getting someone with
english as a first language to do their instructions for the english

thanks claudio. though I am slightly disappointed, I was rather hoping
 they
might have reduced the random elements in lords of the galaxy or added
 extra
things to galaxy ranger as seemed to happen with version 1.1 of the
 game.

 Oh well.

 beware the Grue!

 Hello dark!

[Audyssey] the registry - Re: reused code - Re: Accessible Game releases, 2007

2008-01-27 Thread Charles Rivard
Mister Ranger's not going to like this, Yogi. (grin) The only thing that
confuses me about the registry are the long strings of letters and numbers.
Other than that, I'm OK with it. Sometimes, even games for the blind leave
bits of stuff in there when they are removed.

 Hi Charles,
It is a dead Windows service.
 he he he he he.
As my friend yogi Bear always says, I'm smarter than the average bear.

 Hi Thomas,
I replied to you a day or two ago saying we could use the voting scripts
on blind adrenaline for the voting, no need for you guys to go through the
trouble of programming anything, plus the scripts are built to minimize
multiple votes from the same person.
If you replied to the offer, I missed it.
to the rest of the members of the list, please let me know your thoughts on

[Audyssey] Sorry about that list

2008-01-27 Thread acarthon
I was just a little too quick on sending the e-mail before changing the
email address.
That's what I get for being lazy by using the alias instead of typing the
actual Email address. smile
plus I'm pretty tired from playing hours of Sound RTS. smile I'm still
struggling with the tutorials. I'm on tutorial 3 now.
What a brain workout. Good exercise I tell ya! Gotta keep that brain
muscle functioning.
I also find it very addicting.
I am on my way to Atlanta, Georgia to attend a convention for a week.
That's why I'm putting my Email on hold.
So I probably won't reply to any of your Emails if you try to respond to
this one.
I should be back I hope by Friday.
Catch up with you guys later.
