Re: [Audyssey] Creating Roll Playing Games From Scratch

2009-07-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Yeah, I suppose that might be possible. Although, I am not sure on the
tecnical details of the game yet. I am getting quite a lot of requests
to create a stand alone application rather than create a web based game.
If I do so running the game on a Braille Plus would depend on its
technical specifications.
If I am not mistaken doesn't the Braille Plus run a varient of Linux as
the operating system? If so If I made a console application for Linux it
might run on a Braille Plus with very little modifications. I guess i
need to know more about the Braille Plus to tell you one way or the other.

Smile.

This issue of open-ended vs. tightly scripted RPing interests me. My style
as a game master is to set the scene, create significant non-player
characters with their own agendas, some of whom act off stage independent
of, or in reaction to the player characters, but who may not meet them until
a climactic scene. Once I've wound this world up and set the scene, I
release the PCs into the world. I then regard my job as deciding how the
world reacts to their actions. They are the protagonists of this story
after all.

Now that is human role-playing. I've never seen a computer-mediated game
come anywhere close to the richness of a human-mediated game, even in the
MMORPG world. There is always a narrowing of objectives to fit a
restrictive model. This makes sense in a paradigm that demands complete
determinism for each scenario, where every action must be anticipated by the
game designer. Without massive hardware support, you aren't going to see
emergent behavior out of this deterministic model, which is the main reason
human-mediated games are still more satisfying.

I'm not expecting Tom to break this problem, although if he has ways around
it, I'm so there for playing and ultimately purchasing the game.

Re: [Audyssey] science fiction was Creating Roll Playing Games From Scratch

2009-07-18 Thread Allan Thompson

Hi Tom,
We do have some diffrences here.
When it comes to having an alien field to draw from, it would still be there
in this story , only the aliens would have genetic matches with human beings
because they are in essence human beings despite the external features and
other changes. If that was not flexible enough, there is plenty of mutations
out in the galaxy and even in that core empire (illegal aliens, grin). With
a mutations list, you can randomly create your characters or you can pick
them out from the list using a point cost deal. technically, the sky is the
limit for what race you want to be , either pregenrated base lines, or
create your own weird character. I played west end games star wars too, and
I played a protocol droid who had a split personality. It was acutally an
assassin droid, with protocol droid plating around it and so it would be
able to get to hwerever it wanted to , do the hit, and leave as if nothing
happened. So yes, I am sure robots, cybernetics, mind powers, androids,
whatever it is can be generated up with a intuitive easy to use point system
or random system. That should give plenty of flexibility.

When it came to multi player, I am not sure what you mean. In my mind, I am
thinking of a single gamer , making up a team of characters with diffrent
skills and abilities. There would be no other gamer interaction, nor
seperately controlled characters by other gamers.

I mentioned those copyrighted materials because I didn't feel like trying to
describe a light saber in just such a way that it was difrfrent just to make
a point. I understand the copyrighted stuff from what you explained, and I
was just trying to give examples of technology that could be gotten during
a seeker trip. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: [Audyssey] entombed request

2009-07-18 Thread Allan Thompson

Hi Valiant,
I have had the same problems with equipment. My starting character might
start holding a weapon not allowed like a long sword. If you unwield it,
you can't put it back on. Same with armor too. When rescueing the prisoner
on level two, sometimes they are better armed and armored then your own
character, lol.

My biggest trouble with the bow is changing ammo. I am not sure which ammo
is best for which situation but the only way I found that I could change
ammo choices is to go to the inventory, drop the arrows I am using. Then go
to the fight choice, which should ask which ammo you want to use for it.

Weapon wielding seems to be a little tricky. I found that I was using a
weapon I wasn't able to use. I heard already that the developer knows
about that. I used a bow for a while and I wanted to switch to something
else. I removed the bow but when i went back to look in my hands It said I
still had my bow out. It was odd.

Hi, Thomas,

I've always thought that the Adept books would make a great game world. I'd
particularly like to see The Game from Proton coded into something cool, but
I like the juxtaposition, as it were, of science and magic, and a character
that would have different talents, skill choices and paths to pursue based
on which world they were in.

Hi Dark,
Regardless if I create the game as a stand alone game in C++ or create it as
an online game I want to make it a single player game. I'm not really
interested in creating a party or pvp type game at this point.
As far as your idea of creating a universe with mixed technological skills
that kind of reminds me of an author I sometimes read. I don't know if you
have read any of Piers Anthony's books, but he often has an interesting way
of mixing science fiction and fantacy into the same story.
For example, in the Blue Adept Piers Anthony describes a world with two
aspects. In one frame it is a high tech world with computers, androids,
intersteller space travel, lasers, and anything else you would expect from a
science fiction novel. In the other frame it is a fantacy type world
complete with werewolves, unicorns, people use magic instead of technology,
etc. Some people are able to pass between the two frames of existance. Thus
the main character is able to be both active in a fantacy and science
fiction story at the same time.
Anyway, even big name science fiction stories like Star Wars do have a
fantacy aspect to them as well. If you think about it Star Wars is something
like a fantacy story set in a science fiction setting. Instead of magic you
have the force. Instead of swords you have light sabers.
Instead of knights waring armour you have storm troopers. A lot of the same
principles apply. it is just that Star Wars is suppose to be futuristic
instead of being set in ancient earth.
Smile.

dark wrote:
As I said Tom, I certainly see the logic of the online approach, I
just hope it can be kept single player the way Sryth originally was
 intended to be.

I would however love to see a scifi rp game giving you a hole galaxy
to explore with different planets, quests separately on the various
planets, flying a spaceship etc. Pluss, you have infinite expantion,
especially if you made your universe similar to the Starwars or Dune
universe with different amounts of technology found on different
worlds, you could have standard dungeon crawling with swords on
one world, and high tech robot developement elsewhere.

 Just my thoughts.

[Audyssey] creating roll playing games

2009-07-18 Thread Josh
Hi tom,

Here is how to avoid copyright.
1. use characters from the old icelandic saggas.
2. Use characters from Irish mythology.
3. use characters from the finnish mythology called the kalyvala. those
mythologies is where most of our fantasy comes from. at one time they were
pagan religions but thanks to them we now have fantasy like narnia and the lord
of the rings and stuff. But I bet if you could base games directlly off
characters in those old mythlogies you could avoid copyright.

2009-07-18 Thread Lex

Hi listers,

I am new to the audyssey, so sorry if this topic is allready discussed
(perhaps many times).

I introduced a lot of interest to the text-based RPGs genre from you. I
was a big fan of MUDs a few years, but online books are uninteresting to
me.

One genre which is not introduced for blind is online action RPGs like
World of Warcraft or Line age. The experience of technoshock and Shades
of Doom showed that fps is playable by visually impaired. But these
games have bad replayability. I believe, that adding multiplayer and
elements of RPG will grow this option a lot. One project i found which
is something i am talking about is SoundMUD. But it is quite outdated.
If here are interested developers, i will be happy to describe the
architecture as i imagine it. I have basic code in c++, and am searching
partners.

Re: [Audyssey] action/rpg was Re: Creating Roll Playing Games From Scratch

2009-07-18 Thread Lex

Hi Thomas,

Well, that sort of games is called MMORPG in main stream. is it actually
rpg or not is debatable question.

For the game concept i have only general vision of the game play
process, with different degree of deep. I am not very good in writing
stories.
It will be a first-person, because i think that this view enables more
diving into the game atmosphere. The players can explore the world and
interract with each other. I think you can imagine a lot of features
which is possible in such sort of game, so i don't want to write huge
list of features. I just want to describe interesting solution i
considered about combat. When you are in fight with one victim, it will
be easy to do your best. But i want to enable big parties of players and
monsters (say 5 characters in a group). Consider there are different
classes of characters. The mage needs to cast his fireballs on the most
appropriate victim, cleric must heal his most damaged friends, fighters
must stay in contact with alien fighters etc. It can be very difficult
to figure out what are going around you and how to react appropriately.
For eliminate this we can implement a time slowness area around the
combat. For example, if you start fighting with single victim, there is
no time difference. But if there are three opponents, the game will
create time sloweness zone around them. and when another players come up
enough to enter the fight, the time will be also slowed for them.

Let's now dive into the technical part. I selected c++ as a development
language both for client and server. I plan to use lua or python for
writing quests. For client, i have resourcing, modern 3d sound system
with lot of features (based on FMODEX), my own input action mapping
(SDL), tts module (for now only sapi5 on windows), prototype of UI
(menus, dialogs, edit fields) and networking (boost::asio). I am using
GNU gettext for localization. all of this (besides sapi) is crossplatform.

Server: there is basic networking and collision detection of 3d
primitives. A lot of work must be done here.

I think that prior to developing game story i need to have working world
(walking and chatting). However, i incline to historical world or
mythology (perhaps russian?)

Re: [Audyssey] Creating Roll Playing Games From Scratch

2009-07-18 Thread Valiant8086
Hi.
yes it uses debian linux arm, at least that's what I've heard tell of. It does
give access to the console but I don't know anything about dependencies or
anything like that. I'm able to connect to alter aeon and mud on it using the
telnet client but that's about all I know how to do. It definitly doesn't have
things like pygame built into it. Heh, too bad. Playing soundrts on that thing
could be a hoot. If you have commands I can type to find out what dependencies
it has so you'd know, and if it made any difference to you in the long run, I'd
be glad to do so.

It uses hmm, I can't remember. A popular console screen reader for TUI distros
of linux. I'd know if I heard it. You can use the number pad to navigate. 7, 8,
and 9 move up, read current or move down lines, 4 5 and 6 do the same for
words, 1 2 and 3 the same for characters.

From the browser point of view, it uses minny mo, which is supposed to be baby
firefox. It seems to work with dynamic content. I have never tried to play
srith on it. Maybe I should to see how it works. if you did develop a browser
based game I'm betting it would be a really simple browser page setup that the
browser in question could handle just fine.

  Hi,
Yeah, I suppose that might be possible.

Hi,

Lex:
Well, that sort of game is called MMORPG in main stream. is it actually

not is debatable question.

Tom:
Actually, I made a mistake earlier. I thought you had said SoundRTS
instead of SoundMUD. SoundMUD is called a MMORPG, and once I remembered
SoundMUD was loosely based on Diablo I understood what you were talking
about.

Lex:
It will be a first-person, because i think that this view enables more
diving into
the game atmosphere. The players can explore the world and interract

I think you can imagine a lot of features that would be available in

Tom:
Yes, I can easily imagine why you would want to go for an FPS style
format. The main one being more realistic. Instead of throwing attack
rolls you would actually have to engage in combat in real time. That
means you would have to press one key to attack and another to use your
weapon to block etc. There is a lot of interesting possabilities right
there.

Lex:
I selected c++ as the development language
both for client and server. I plan to use lua or python for writing quests.

Tom:
I don't have an issue with C++, but I hate Python with a passsion. I
like strongly typed languages with plenty of braces, brackets, etc like
C++. Python is a massive turn off for me because it doesn't conform to a
C standard.
Anyway, I know this is your game, and you can use what you want. I just
wanted to say if I did decide to work with you this would be a technical
point we would likely disagree on.

Lex:
For client, i have resourcing, modern 3d sound system with lot of
features (based on
FMODEX), my own input action mapping (SDL), tts module (for now only
sapi5 on windows.

Tom:
Are you planning on selling this game? If you are don't forget FMODEX
has to be properly licensed for commercial projects. Of course, if you
are planning on a free game then you can use it for free. That's one of
the reasons I haven't included FMODEX in any of my games yet. The cost
is simply too high to put into a commercial game engine.
One API I am seriously looking at for the next generation cross platform
version of Genesis 3D is OpenAL. So far it looks like a fairly decent
audio API. Although, the Linux port hasn't been updated in quite some time.

Lex:
However, i incline to historical world or mythology (perhaps russian?)

Tom:
Makes sense seeing as you are from that part of the world. Since I am
not exactly well versed in Russian history and mythology I can't be of
any help there.

Smile.

Hi.

I remember Kelly and a couple of other people were really big players of
this game.

Now that my vip mud display problem is fixed I'm playing it a litle more,
but stil have some questions. It'd be great to have a chat about the
game, either on this list or in the game itself.

I'm a dwarf paladin by the name of Krandok in the game, right now
running around the town of Rune.

If anyone's either played this game, or playing it I'd love to here from
them.

the telnet client but that's about all I know how to do. It definitly

find out what dependencies it has so you'd know, and if it made any
difference to you in the long run, I'd be glad to do so.

It uses hmm, I can't remember. A popular console screen reader for TUI
distros of linux. I'd know if I heard it. You can use the number pad to
navigate. 7, 8, and 9 move up, read current or move down lines, 4 5 and 6 do
the same for words, 1 2 and 3 the same for characters.

From the browser point of view, it uses minny mo, which is supposed to be
baby firefox. It seems to work with dynamic content. I have never tried to
play srith on it. Maybe I should to see how it works. if you did develop a
browser based game I'm betting it would be a really simple browser page
setup that the browser in question could handle just fine.

   Hi,
Yeah, I suppose that might be possible.

Re: [Audyssey] Creating Roll Playing Games From Scratch

2009-07-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Aaron,
Well, assuming I created a simple text interface, similar to the Infocom
games, there wouldn't be any software dependancies to speak of. However,
seeing as the Braille Plus is a type of note taker device any game
written for it would have to be pretty bare bones. I don't know at this
point exactly how bare bones I plan to get with this game. I might
decide to go to a more action based roll playing game since I am getting
a lot of requests for something more like an FPS rather than a game book
style game.

Hi,

Lex:
Well, that sort of game is called MMORPG in main stream. is it actually
rpg or

not is debatable question.

Tom:
Actually, I made a mistake earlier. I thought you had said SoundRTS
instead of SoundMUD. SoundMUD is called a MMORPG, and once I remembered
SoundMUD was loosely based on Diablo I understood what you were talking
about.

Lex:
It will be a first-person, because i think that this view enables more
diving into
the game atmosphere. The players can explore the world and interract with
each other.
I think you can imagine a lot of features that would be available in such
a game.

Tom:
Yes, I can easily imagine why you would want to go for an FPS style
format. The main one being more realistic. Instead of throwing attack
rolls you would actually have to engage in combat in real time. That means
you would have to press one key to attack and another to use your weapon
to block etc. There is a lot of interesting possabilities right there.

Lex:
I selected c++ as the development language
both for client and server. I plan to use lua or python for writing
quests.

Tom:
I don't have an issue with C++, but I hate Python with a passsion. I like
strongly typed languages with plenty of braces, brackets, etc like C++.
Python is a massive turn off for me because it doesn't conform to a C
standard.

If you are don't forget FMODEX has
to be properly licensed for commercial projects. Of course, if you are
planning on a free game then you can use it for free. That's one of the
reasons I haven't included FMODEX in any of my games yet. The cost is
simply too high to put into a commercial game engine.
One API I am seriously looking at for the next generation cross platform
version of Genesis 3D is OpenAL. So far it looks like a fairly decent
audio API. Although, the Linux port hasn't been updated in quite some
time.

Lex:
However, i incline to historical world or mythology (perhaps russian?)

Tom:
Makes sense seeing as you are from that part of the world. Since I am not
exactly well versed in Russian history and mythology I can't be of any
help there.

Smile.
