[Audyssey] Whip in MOTA

2010-06-11 Thread Damien Pendleton
Hi,
How close do you have to be to an enemy for the bullwhip to work, and how bad
is it supposed to hurt the enemy? I suppose it would just be a bit further away
and a bit more painful than your fists, but it doesn't seem to be doing very
much.
Regards,
Damien.

Yeah, BlazBlue's got the deepest story I've scene too, only thing is that
MK's won't be anime like, which is good IMO because I don't like that
whole text scrolling thing. BlazBlue's story is so deep and involved with
time travel they had to make an FAQ on the story itself alone, with no
gameplay tips or anything, just to understand the story. So if they had to

do that. It's deep as heck.

Co-Op arcade and apparently a deepest story not scene in any other
fighting game. They're probably saying that because most fighting games
have pretty much no story, unless you count Tekken although that game
map is a serious pain for me to even guess at where to go, not to

2010-06-11 Thread dark
While fan created missions wqould be nice, i'd be happy with you writing
expantion packs of say 10 missions each for the game and selling them as
extras myself provided that this would be possible with your various other
projects.

As we've said before, expantion packs are a great way for a developer to get
the most out of one game, and for players to have a larger, more complex

Hi Clement,
Yes and no. It all depends on how I designed the game.
First, in order to create a mission parcer like what Lone Wolf has I
would have to abandon prerecorded speech altogether and use Sapi
support or Jaws/Window-Eyes APIs to speak the game content. As my
opinions about using Sapi is well known, it being more trouble than it
is worth, I wouldn't necessarily want to go that route.
Second, if we go with this new style of game I'd just assume to go
ahead and use the Genesis Engine for creating the game. While that
makes it easier for me as a developer I'm not going to hand over the
level editor to the engine as that is not public software. That is for
my use only, and what I use to create new content for my future games.
In short whatI'd have to do to make that reality is create a
completely new engine using Sapi or screen reader output, and then add
some way to script it using Angelscript, Javascript, or something else
for adding new levels. I honestly don't want to go that far with it.

I have the last beta which was released under the n ame montizumas revenge,
and contains the first six levels if you register the game.

however I'm not sure it would be either fair to tom or reasonable to
distribute the file, - much less give out my registration information so
that people could play the full six levels.

I personally am sorry Tom can't essentially just change a couple of sounds
in game, eg, the name speech, and release the thing as freeware for people
to play, but if he's no longer got the source code etc, pluss if he'd
rather not release something with known bugs, fair enough.

I'd also vote for Neospeech Kate. Not only does that voice bring back
some
fairly pleasant memories of the early Montezuma's Revenge games but as
far
as I'm concerned it's a much better voice in terms of quality despite
being
totally synthetic. In fact the only reason I don't always use those
voices

in my everyday screen reader use is because they like many other higher
quality Sapi voices do tend to be a bit sluggish in screen reader mode.

I definitely liked her in STFC.

Hi Dark,
Yeah, it might be a bit of extra work, but not too bad once the game
core is designed and the majority of the game is written. Adding
extra missions, expantion packs, etc is far easier than writing the
game itself.
As it happens I think I'd use Neospeech Kate, the same voice as STFC
1.0, for the game since that seams to be a popular voice for the game.
I could use ATT Crystal, I suppose, but don't like her voice as well
as Kate.

Hi,
Well, to be honest I have never been a real big fan of multiplayer
games of any kind. I've always been something of a loner when it comes
to playing games. That's one reason that feature hasn't yet been added
into the Genesis Engine. Eventually it is likely something I'll add
because it is perhaps one of the most commonly requested features by
the Vi market.
I would imagine if STFC ever goes multiplayer each player would
select a Federation ship, specific clas, whatever and join forces to
play against the enemy fleets. That way it could be a joint force of
human controlled Federation starships verses several A.I. driven enemy
starships. That way you could help each other destroy the enemy fleets
and carry out the mission objectives together.

Hi Dakotah,
To tell the truth I sort of miss the turn-based style of play myself.
As it stands now the game doesn't offer you much control over the
ships once you asign them their patrol route, and it lacks the hands
on strategy value the previous game had. So I'd really be interested
in hearing your thoughts on this.
Basicly, I'd like to know if people are more in favor of the classic
turn-based style of game play or would really want real time strategy.
There are advantages/disadvantages of both styles of game play. I
could really go either way at this point since I'm in the process of
converting the game from .Net to C++ anyway.

who put it together, but he or she made some mistakes in selecting
certain sounds that aren't the correct sounds from the shows and
movies.
I don't like to sound like a profectionist, but as a long time Trek
fan I like things to be done right. That is done according to cannon
and not mixing up the alert for a warp core breech for the general red
alert clacson. It is this sort of mistake that is the problem with
soundpacks. People who maybe aren't so interested in those fine
details will stick in any sound they think is cool rather than the
correct one that belongs there.

I think you should have the pkb soundpacks link since I put that up a

fact there are sounds not used and that may help you with things.

Hi Dark,
H...This is something that has been suggested before, and I
certainly could do it. I guess it all depends on how many people would
be in favor of that style of game. I think you are right that a Lone
Wolf style Star Trek game would be infinitely more cool than a
strategy game like STFC.
For one thing in light of recent discussions of expantion packs etc
this is the perfect style of game to do it in. The game could ship
with 10 to 15 missions initially and I could add missions to it here
and there giving it nearly unlimited replay value in the process.
Like Lone Wolf over time it could end up having a hundred or more
missions to choose from.
Another way to add replay value to the game is to allow you to select
a specific ship and class from the game setup menu. That way you could
technically play the same mission multiple times trying out various
different classes of ships in the Federation fleet. One time you might
select a Defiant-Class ship, another time a Galaxy-Class, another time
a Nebula-Class, etc. The replay value of this feature alone is huge.
So your idea has maret.
So my question to the rest of the list is what do you say. Should we
abandon the fleet strategy game and go with a Lone Wolf style
simulation where you take on individual missions and campaigns, or
should we proceed with the real time strategy game in production now?

feeling
to have a mission to go and patrol the neutral zone, seak and destroy a
specific targit, like a borg cube or dominian shipyard, or go to a
specific
point in space to look what is there.

as fun as a stratogy game is, essentially lw in space would personally be
my

I'd also vote for Neospeech Kate. Not only does that voice bring back some
fairly pleasant memories of the early Montezuma's Revenge games but as far
as I'm concerned it's a much better voice in terms of quality despite being
totally synthetic. In fact the only reason I don't always use those voices
in my everyday screen reader use is because they like many other higher
quality Sapi voices do tend to be a bit sluggish in screen reader mode. And
I definitely liked her in STFC.

Hi Dark,
Yeah, it might be a bit of extra work, but not too bad once the game
core is designed and the majority of the game is written. Adding
extra missions, expantion packs, etc is far easier than writing the
game itself.
As it happens I think I'd use Neospeech Kate, the same voice as STFC
1.0, for the game since that seams to be a popular voice for the game.
I could use ATT Crystal, I suppose, but don't like her voice as well
as Kate.

I would imagine if STFC ever goes multiplayer each player would

starships. That way you could help each other destroy the enemy fleets

There would be another possibility for voice acting, though again this
is just an idea, and it certainly isn't necessary to the game.

Why not see if people like Darker Projects or STTCM will help you.
STTCM and Darker Projects both have ships set up in un the universe
and you may be able to get them to help. They have good people for the
most part.

Whether or not voice acting and cut scenes are included or not, a
campaign type setting could still be possible.

Even if a campaign isn't included, I'm sure it'd be a fun game to play.

You certainly know how to make them well, and I look forward to

Particularly, I would rather see a turn based game that limits what
you can do per turn. You sort of set that up, limiting the number of
phaser and torpedo shots per turn, but the limits were, likely, still
too large. Especially if a borg cube can be destroyed in one go.

I love realtime stuff, but if I had an honest preference, it'd be a
turn based game that had some limits per turn.

I'd also like to see more features that make use of impulse. The
option is available in navigation, but it doesn't seem to have any

The United States government in the census data I used for the white
paper defines a person with one or more disabilities as a person who
REPORTS they have one or more disability. I'm sure there are
definitions when you are trying to get into an assistance program, but
they are perfectly happy to use self reporting for the census information.

I think anyone who requires some accommodation to complete normal tasks
have some degree of disability. This means people with injuries have a
temporary disability until they can resume normal activities. It is
my contention that most games can have some accommodations built into
them to allow more people to access them. Not all games can be made
blind accessible. For example, one of our games - Word Jungle - is a
hidden word puzzle. It consists of a large grid that contains words in
three directions and randomized letters between. The object is to find
all the hidden words. That is not rated blind accessible since it would
change the game too much to do so. But - with reasonable adaptations,
adequate sound augmentation to the graphics, variable speed settings,
controls that can be read by screen readers etc, many games could be
made blind accessible if there was an interest to do so.

Vision deteriorates as people get older. Macular degeneration is a
disease of old age. Many people will no longer be able to play
non-accessible games as they used to. This might help developers
realize there is a market - which incidentally can also mean
accessibility for younger VI and blind gamers.

The main thing is to build the ability to change as many parameters as
possible into games and other software to let people adjust it so they
can use it. There are some that say that dumbs down a game. I don't
see that at all. If someone can successfully play the game at half
speed, what is the problem with having a setting that allows that?

Anyhow - off my soapbox! Thanks Dark and Thomas for some interesting
observations.

I've told him this as well. It's one thing to do something like that right
at first (I did), but sooner or later you should realize it's not
necessary since the list automatically puts Audyssey at the beginning of
whatever subject line you type. I remember I did that once or twice when I
first subscribed to BSC's Game Talk list (do they even run that list
anymore?) but I quickly figured out it wasn't necessary since it
automatically does this.

[Audyssey] Lone Kirk, A Star Trek Simulation

2010-06-11 Thread Phil Vlasak

Games we like to play:
Lone Kirk, A Star Trek Simulation.

Lone Kirk is a sophisticated, full-featured Star Trek Starship simulation
game, where you pit your skills against the enemy's space and land
emplacements. As Commanding officer
of the USS Enterprise, a United Federation of Planets Starship , you are
given ten missions that you must complete. You will be pitted against
Tholians, Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans, and Borg in pursuit of dilithium
mines, disruptor weapon manufacturing plants, photon torpedo factories,
cargo Starships, artificial singularity platforms, and other prey.

You have full 3D-movement control of your Starfleet Starship in a real-time
and realistic space environment. With ten included missions, and future
expansion packs, you will have the opportunity to experience an almost
infinite number of tactical situations, and with the multi-layered
multi-dimensional sounds, it will make you feel that you are right in the
middle of a raging space battle.

Features
Real-time game play, (that is, the game is not move based, and the game
continues regardless of what you do or don't do),
Multi-layered, multi-dimensional sound with many sounds playing
simultaneously,

Customizable joystick support,
And Much, much more.

Mission 1:
The Cardassians are trying to rebuild their empire on a lifeless ball of
rock in a far corner of the Beta Quadrant.

Your mission is to find and destroy this base by any means possible.

Hopefully with enough pestering of Thomas Ward, this game could be available
in the next few years!

smiles,
Phil

2010-06-11 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Jim,
I like the idea of unlocking levels, so when you reach 100 points, you can
decide to go to the next level or not.
This gives people who are not skilled enough to get to 300 or 100 on the
three levels a chance to hear the winning sounds and feel better about
reaching the goal.
I am still on the beginner's level while my wife is in the middle of expert
level.

2010-06-11 Thread Travis Siegel
Well, folks, if you've been looking for a way to port all your quickbasic, or
older dos basic code to windows, here's a solution.
Powerbasic is a rock solid compiler, and one I've been using for years.
And, now you can buy a copy for just 49 bucks.
It's usually priced at $169, but it looks like because of vista and windows 7,
they're concentrating on their gui version a bit more, which is good news for
us.
You can purchase it here.
http://www.powerbasic.com/products/clcc/
I own several powerbasic products, and they're all top notch.
Perhaps this will give some of you the means to begin writing your own games
for windows now.
Enjoy.

Hi Miss Wings,
Um...That's not exactly what the rope does. You don't use it to jump
over the wall. What it is actually for is that it takes you up into
the room above the one you are standing in. This room has a door to
your left and a stone statue on your right. Both are exits into rooms
to the left and right of room 3.

And
I definitely liked her in STFC.

Hi Dark,
Yeah, it might be a bit of extra work, but not too bad once the game
core is designed and the majority of the game is written. Adding
extra missions, expantion packs, etc is far easier than writing the
game itself.
As it happens I think I'd use Neospeech Kate, the same voice as STFC
1.0, for the game since that seams to be a popular voice for the game.
I could use ATT Crystal, I suppose, but don't like her voice as well
as Kate.

t2k was just a straight port of trek 1999 so its not its fault it was

 Hi Dakotah,
To tell the truth I sort of miss the turn-based style of play myself.

I despatched the yorktown to ds9, but by the time it got there ds9 had

Yes, thanks. I have the STFC 1 soundpack from PKB. While I really
like the new sounds a few of them are the wrong sounds. Wrong in that
the Romulan torpedoes someone used don't sound like those from the TNG

sound, from Star Trek 8, with the warp core breech alert. I'm not sure
who put it together, but he or she made some mistakes in selecting
certain sounds that aren't the correct sounds from the shows and

You will be pitted against
Tholians, Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans, and Borg in pursuit of
dilithium mines, disruptor weapon manufacturing plants, photon torpedo
factories, cargo Starships, artificial singularity platforms, and other
prey.

You have full 3D-movement control of your Starfleet Starship in a
real-time and realistic space environment. With ten included missions,
and

future expansion packs, you will have the opportunity to experience an
almost infinite number of tactical situations, and with the multi-layered
multi-dimensional sounds, it will make you feel that you are right in the
middle of a raging space battle.

Hopefully with enough pestering of Thomas Ward, this game could be
available in the next few years!
smiles,
Phil

Yeah, it might be a bit of extra work, but not too bad once the game

Re: [Audyssey] startrek games

2010-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Yes, very true. Expantion packs are definitely the way to go when it
comes to developers continuing an existing product as well as giving
them something to release between new products that may take months or
years to create. there is also the personal aspect here to consider.
This may seam a bit selfish to some, maybe, but I know a lot of
developers don't really like end users drastically altering their
games. Many have put in place encrypted sound files, don't include
level editors, and other such methods of fully customizing the game or
expanding it. This is probibly largely do to the fact that by allowing
these changes anyone can replace the sounds, levels, enemies, and
other such elements with their own creating something else never
intended by the developer.
Well, in my own way I am not all that different. I've been a huge Star
Trek fan for my entire life, and have watched, read, and listened to
just about everything Star Trek imaginable. As a result I have a vast
amount of first-hand knowledge of the Star Trek universe. Coming from
that background and perspective I want my own Star Trek game to stick
to the Star Trek cannon as closely as possible. I would be extremely
disappointed to download some user created missions that deviates from
the Star Trek cannon, or download custom sounds for the game that
wouldn't be true to the Star Trek series.
For example, I can imagine someone replacing the sound of the
Enterprise's phasers with the sound of the Defiant's phasers. Someone
might really think that was totally cool. For me, though, I would find
it a major turn off. I wouldn't like that at all. An issue like that
would simply be a matter of personal preference, and since it is my
game I would encurrage people not to alter my game in that way.
However, if I leave it open to customization drastic changes in plot,
sounds, whatever are bound to occur that I might not agree with or
even like and therefore wouldn't necessarily want just anyone to
change the game.
However, I also see their side of the debate as well. A lot of gamers
don't have an ounce of programming skills, and wouldn't even know
where to begin in creating there own games. One way they can do this
quickly and easily is by customizing an existing game. Although, it
might not be a totally new game the soundpacks, new speech files,
whatever can drasticly change the game and make it seam rather new.
For example, a game like STFC might have all of the sounds, music, and
speech files replaced with those for a Star Wars fleet simulator. A
cool idea to be sure, but might not be how the original author
imagined his/her game being used by the public at large. I myself
would have mixed feelings about such an alteration to my game.
Bottom line, as I see it level editors, mission parcers, etc are great
ways to expand the game, but I've seen plenty of times where that
ability can take the game in a completely different direction from the
one intended. Either that or end users do something rediculous that
the author of the game might not approve of. Case in point.
Many of us have been big fans of Lone Wolf for several years, and I
have personally been a fan of the mission parcer. However, there have
been several missions, which I shall leave nameless, i thought were
just down right stupid or rediculous. As a result I deleted them from
my Lone Wolf folder and never intend to put them back on my system
again. Others I really loved and play constantly. As a gamer I see the
Lone Wolf mission parcer as a good thing and a bad thing. It is great
when a really good mission designer comes along and creates good
missions to play, and equally bad when someone puts together something
that is basicly crap. By restricting the public from adding their own
custom missions whatever to a game is a two edged sword. You certainly
filter out all the crappy missions that might be created as well as
some truly awesome missions. It is a hard decision to make.

Smile.

On 6/11/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:
While fan created missions wqould be nice, i'd be happy with you writing
expantion packs of say 10 missions each for the game and selling them as
extras myself provided that this would be possible with your various other
 projects.

As we've said before, expantion packs are a great way for a developer to get
the most out of one game, and for players to have a larger, more complex
 experience playing..

Hi Hayden,
Unfortunately, no. I've been busy this week with other things, and
haven't touched MOTA for a while. I hope to catch up with a few things
this weekend though.

Hi Dark,
Umm..the Yorktown? There isn't a Yorktown in STFC. That was a
Constilation-Class ship from the original series. Lol!
Anyway, sounds like a very interesting battle all the same. The
Cardassian Union got their buttsroyally kicked by Deep Space 9. Good
for the Federation. That will teach those creeps once and for all what
happens to those who try to invade Bajoran Space. Gul Dukat and his
ugly pals can just stay on their side of the neutral zone.

Wow. It's been so long since I played STFC that I don't even remember the
names of the other three Federation ships, although surely one of them must
have been the Enterprise.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Really? You destroyed a Borg Cube in a single turn?
I don't remember being able to do that. At least not on the higher
difficulty levels. Although, I do remember quite a lot of complaining
back when STFC was in beta testing that the Borg were too hard to
beat so I changed their stats. Apparently I made them two low now.
Anyway, as for your view of creating a turn-based game with limits per
turn that does make some sense. The Sovereign-Class ships can only
fire 30 torpedoes at a time which constitutes a full spread. If I made
the game more to Star Trek technical specs that should be all they can
fire per turn which would make the game more drawn out, and you would
have multiple turns to carry out a battle rather than whiping out one
or more enemy ships in a single move. That would both be more
difficult and realistic as far as a turn-based game goes.

On 6/11/10, Dakotah Rickard dakotah.rick...@gmail.com wrote:
Particularly, I would rather see a turn based game that limits what
you can do per turn. You sort of set that up, limiting the number of
phaser and torpedo shots per turn, but the limits were, likely, still
too large. Especially if a borg cube can be destroyed in one go.

I love realtime stuff, but if I had an honest preference, it'd be a
turn based game that had some limits per turn.

I'd also like to see more features that make use of impulse. The
option is available in navigation, but it doesn't seem to have any
 real value.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Oh, assuming I ever did that, creating a Star Wars fleet command game,
it would have to be freeware. I definitely would not try and sell it.
That would surely bring Lucas's lawyers down on me, and I could get
sued for selling it with out permission. However, if I released the
game as freeware, fan fiction, it is unlikely they would do anything
major. About the worst I could expect is a legal letter ordering me to
remove the game from my web site, and abandon the project.
Although, I wouldn't necessarily have to put it on my web site to
begin with. I could always slap it on my Send Space account where they
aren't likely to stumble across it. In other words if I release it as
anonymously or release it possibly as open source there isn't a whole
lot they can do to me legally. It will largely take the teeth out of
their legal bite I think. I know that the open source community, for
example, has won several battles over copyrights and the courts are
beginning to allow more copyrighted content to be used under the free
fair use claws of the copyright law. This by no means makes it
strictly legal, per say, but I've seen a number of free open source
clones of games out there that would technically violate copyright
law, but have been allowed to continue development. It is a fine line,
but the fact remains going free and possibly open source with a
project like that would be my best bet.

I suppose that would have to be free to or is that licence different

2010-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Oh, that could be. Haven't watched DS9 in a while so I have forgotten
what the claxon sounds like. Still I'm a bit surprised the red alert
for the Sovereign-Class ships seen in Star Trek 8 was replaced by
another claxon sound. To me that just sounds off. You know what I
mean?
However, some of the other sounds are pretty good. I like the fact
someone mixed the weapons with the ship sounds. That made it more
realistic in some cases.

Ships bump into you because either they are headed toward you, or vice
versa. If you collide with them you get wet. (grin) Move out of their way
either down, left, or right.

As for walk throughs of missions beyond mission 17, I know of none.

Re: [Audyssey] lone wolf question

2010-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
As for the walkthroughs I don't know if there has ever been a serious
effort at writing walkthroughs for every single user created mission.
As there are close to a hundred of them now it would be a major
undertaking.
However, as for getting rammed by enemy ships that's pretty easy. If
you see a destroyer or battleship baring down on you don't stick
around and wait for it to ram you. Instead you should dive down deep
enough to clear the bottom of the enemy's hull. For destroyers about
60 feet or more is good. For battleships try about 100 feet or so in
order to clear the bottom of the hull. Oh, and after you reach a safe
depth go quiet as you can as you don't want them to find you and depth
charge you out of the water either. Lol!
