[Audyssey] X-Sight Interactive Update

2013-12-17 Thread Damien C. Pendleton
Hi folks,
Unfortunately, as of January 5, 2014, X-Sight Interactive will be closing its
doors.
Due to the high demands for games with better storylines, advanced navigation,
high quality audio, and extra extensive support features such as 3d audio and
online multiplayer capabilities, our current titles have not been meeting the
high quality standards both we and our user base expect. As a result we are
caught up in a chicken-egg circle where we are trying to create titles with the
few resources we currently have at our disposal, and trying to sell them. Even
then, despite a lot of time, effort and money put towards these titles, we have
still not even met the expected figures. This means that other expenses such as
new sound effects, voice actors and server costs, are coming from personal
funds alone.
Since 2006 I have, more often than not, had a team of people who have assisted
me greatly in my desire to create audiogames. However, very recently, my entire
team is no more, either due to other commitments, or discontent with the state
of events here. This means that the entire responsibility of running X-Sight
Interactive has fallen to myself, the founder and, once project manager, now
sole survivor, so to speak.
Consequently things have gone downhill in a major way, both from a business and
personal perspective, and, based on the fact that I am a married man with a
family to support, I have neither time nor money enough to continue to keep up
a project that was once a dream, which has now turned into a financial
nightmare.
Up until January 5, 2014, we are offering our two commercial products, X-Wheel
and Active Soundscape Engine, at a heavily reduced price (roughly a 70%
discount) of $5.00 and $3.50 respectively.
After january 5 all product support and marketing will cease, at which point
our free title, River Raiders, will be transferred to my personal website at
www.dcpendleton.co.uk, services such as the scoreboards will remain active
until January 20.
I'd like to thank all our former development and testing teams (Casey Matthews,
Ryan Conroy, Richard and Rachael Claridge, Quinten Pendle, Kelly Sapergia,
Munawar Bijani, Vincent Rikotta, Cory Sharp, Humphrey Clement, Shaun Edwards,
Eric Baud, Joseli Walter, Louis Bryant, Michael Forzano and Matthew Horspool).
Special thanks goes to Ian Paget, Peter Bryenton, Sean Randall, Philip
Bennefall, Jayne Holden, and last but not least, my wife, Josie Pendleton.
Most of all, my sincere grattitude and appreciation go to the people whom it
would be futile to try and name, you. The community who have downloaded,
purchased or otherwise played our games, contributed donations, sensible
suggestions, constructive criticisms, encouragements, feedback, moral support
etc. Without you, I would not have been able to carry on for as long as I have
and it is mainly for this reason that I feel sad to say I have to go.
I wish you all the best of happiness and luck for the future, whatever you do
and wherever you go, and again, thank you so much for making this past eight
years a pleasure for me, even if it hasn’t led us in the direction we expected
it to.
Cheers.
Kind regards,
Damien C.S. Pendleton.

[Audyssey] X-Wheel 1.1 Released

2013-03-22 Thread Damien C. Pendleton
Hi folks,
We are pleased to announce the release of X-Wheel 1.1. Though this is not a
major release, it does contain a couple of important changes.
Firstly, the game now contains a player manager, where you can have anything
between two and four players. You can decide which players are human, and which
players are computer based, and the computer players now have intelligence
levels that you can choose to play with.
Other minor changes include: Two new options in the main menu, to unregister
the game and to clear your local scores, and the game now prompts you to
confirm you wish to return to the main menu if you try and exit during a game.
There are also a couple of minor bug fixes and performance improvements.
You can download it at http://www.x-sight-interactive.net/games/x-wheel.php.
Kind regards,
Damien C.S. Pendleton,
Head of X-Sight Interactive.

Hi all,
I know there is goldwave that blind gamers have talked about before and I

allow one to join files together, or shorten files or record ones voice and

I guess that is some of my biggest questions. Thanks for any help.

Re: [Audyssey] a bone to pick

2012-08-18 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Allan,
As far as I am aware this is because there are over 300 members on the list,
and when the list is in one of its heavier moments such free list providers
can't process the high-traffic data easily enough to accommodate it, which
means some people don't get the messages.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] a bone to pick

 Hi Darren,

Well, there are a few good reasons for not increasing the message size to
20 KB.

First, is financial. Whoever maintains the Audyssey domain, server,
and list will have to pay for extra bandwidth being used by the list.
The larger the messages the more bandwidth it will take for Mailman to
post several copies of the same message. That cost will directly
effect the guy who is paying for the Audyssey domain, bandwidth, etc.
That happens to be Raul, but there has been discussion of turning the
list over to me so I can just put it on the same service plan as my
USA Games account. Therefore the cost would be my responsibility.

Second, is that the larger the size of the messages the more time it
will take Mailman to post that message to everyone on the list. I
realise an extra 10 KB doesn't sound like much on the surface, but is
actually quite a lot if you sit down and do the math.

For example, let us say that 50 messages are posted to the list on a
daily basis. At 10 KB that will equal something like 0.5 MB coming
into Mailman. Now, Mailman has to copy and repost all 50 messages to
300 list members which adds up to something like 150 MB in messages
going out. Now, let's add an additional 10 KB of length to all 50
messages and watch our output go from 150 MB per day to 300 MB per
day. That's something like 9 to 10 GB a month in messages alone.
That's a dramatic increase that Mailman has to handle when we can cut
that in half by limiting the message length to 10 KB.

Finally, increasing the size doesn't resolve the initial problem being
discussed here. Allen wanted to know if a message was rejected can he
get his original message back. The answer is no, because the software
doesn't support that option. Therefore if a message is 21 KB in size
and the maximum length is 20 KB someone is still likely to complain
about the fact they lost their original message simply because he or
she didn't trim the message in the first place. So increasing the
length from 10 KB to 20 KB would not resolve the issue being discussed
and would add additional problems for the list moderators and
 maintainers in the process.

 Cheers!

isn't so bad, but one difficulty I've had is that sometimes I'll
exceed the size limit, but I lose my message, because it isn't
referenced or resent in the rejection. If it was resent, then I could
find a good place to split it up, or I could reread it to see if it

Agreed. X-Wheel is a superior product. No argument from me on that. I

well.

[Audyssey] Muds: Re: Alter Aeon advice and suggestions

Hi Jesse,
I personally use VIPMud to access Alter Aeon.
Speaking of muds, does anyone have any other titles to recommend? I'm pretty
new to them and am having trouble with some of the more complex ones. Alter

Thanks.

Hi all,

I’m fairly new to the blind gaming world, but have been intrigued by
some of the postings on the Alter Aeon discussion list. I do; however,
have some questions. I have read quite a bit about this game Alter
Aeon, but haven’t the sliest idea of which client is best to run with
the game. I am running Windows 7 home premium with JAWS 13. I have
visited the website, and like I said, “I find it very intriguing.” I
will greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions on which client to
run and installation of such client.

Thanks,

Re: [Audyssey] Moderator reminder: Trimming messages

2012-07-24 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Dakotah,
To be honest, I'm not altogether sure why this rule applies myself. My
logical guess would be that the mailing list has to send each message out to
each member, which takes up bandwidth and therefore increases the site
admin's running costs. This would be especially obvious during times when
the list is rather high-traffic.
Imagine if a thread had been going for quite a while and had generated a
whole list of replies so that the messages became 100KB. Then imagine that
there were 100 such messages. Not only would a single user have to download
10 megabytes of emails, the bulk of which are other portions of the same
topic, but also the mail server would have to process 2 gigabytes of
messages in sending those 100 large messages to a list with, let's say, 250
members.
Even if this is not the main reason, it probably contributes, and other
reasons are obviously logical hence the restriction's existence. All I know
is, as moderator I have to enforce these rules, and I satisfy myself with
that. Grin.

Kind regards,
Damien.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Moderator reminder: Trimming messages

I don't mind the idea, except I'm curious as to why there's a message
length restriction. If someone doesn't want to read the entire
message, they can either delete it then and there or move to the next
name in the thread, depending on their client and mail reading
preferences. What's more, most e-mail services give what is now an
incredible amount of e-mail storage. Trimming messages is no longer a
technical necessity.

On those grounds, I submit that the list itself offer complaints over
messages which are too long.

When I write a long message, I try to give people a heads up at the
beginning, and I also expect that plenty won't read it. I view long
messages as essential, however, as there are many instances where I
could break up a message into multiple parts, but what's the point if
I can write a single, flowing missive to the group.

I hope this is well-received.

Re: [Audyssey] X-Wheel, solving the puzzle

2012-07-08 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Phil,
One of the things I hope to add to my extended version is the ability to
customise different game options, such as solving method, track used letters
etc. The solving method will allow you to choose whether you fill out the
missing letters or type in the whole puzzle. I originally made it so letters
should be filled in to make it easier for people who may not know how to
spell the puzzles and thus have more chance of getting them wrong.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Damien.

Subject: [Audyssey] X-Wheel, solving the puzzle

Hi Damien,
Here is a case for not reading the instructions.
I assumed that you needed to type in the entire answer and not just
replace the stars.

Then I read the directions below.
For people like me could you have the game check to see if the person was
typing the first letter of the puzzle that was already filled in and not
the first missing letter?
Or when trying to solve the puzzle, the game could say, only type in the
missing letters.

Solving the Puzzle
When you think you know the puzzle, you can solve it without having filled
the entire puzzle through spinning the wheel and guessing letters. To do
this, press the solve Puzzle button. You will hear a high beep, meaning
the game is waiting for your guess.

To enter letters into the puzzle, simply press the corresponding letters
on the keyboard. It doesn't matter where you are in the form, as the
letters will still appear in the puzzle.
It is important to note that when solving the puzzle, you should not write
out the whole puzzle character by character. The puzzle will remain with
letters filled in from previous guesses, and therefore you should only
fill in the remaining asterisks.
To make this easier, move to the puzzle information field and read through
character by character so you can get an idea of what letter should come
next and where your remaining asterisks are.
Once all the letters are filled in, the game will tell you whether the
puzzle is correct or not. With this in mind it is essential to check
carefully through the puzzle as you are solving if you are uncertain.
As you are filling in letters, each letter is only filled in once, at the
point of the next asterisk, unlike guessing letters in the game which
could potentially fill multiple spaces.
if you enter a letter that's incorrect and you wish to reenter your guess,
you can press delete from anywhere in the form. You will hear the sound of
crumpling paper and the puzzle board will be reset to the state it was in
before you solved the puzzle.
Once you have filled out the remaining blank areas, the game will notify
you as to whether you are correct or not. If you are incorrect, play
passes to your opponent. If you are correct, you advance to, and are the
first to play, the next round, and you receive the solve bonus for that
round.

* Added: Updated the documentation with the fact that you could press v in the
menu to access the version number (Thanks Charles).
* Added: Allowed the right control key to be used for navigation in forms
(Thanks Peter and Philip).
* Bug fix: Sometimes the AI would attempt guessing a letter without spinning
the wheel, causing a fatal error (Thanks Ryan).
* Bug fix: Pressing v in the menu would always speak the version number with
Jaws.
* Bug fix: The SAPI voice menu would return to main menu rather than
configuration.
* Bug fix: The form would paste multiline text in a single line field, making
copying and pasting registration information difficult at times.

[Audyssey] X-Wheel 1.0.2

2012-07-06 Thread Damien C. Pendleton
   Hey folks,
X-Wheel 1.0.2 is now up and ready. The main fix is the bug Kelly kindly brought
to my attention last night regarding vowels that could still be purchased with
all vowels used. There are some other minor bugfixes as well.
Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Hi William,
If you are having problems with your keyboard I will happily help you go
through them to see if there is anything wrong.
I would first recommend you download the latest update and see if that fixes
your issue. There was a keyboard bug which is now fixed. If not come back to
me and I will see what I can do.

Thanks.

Damien.

hi all,

i do not see x-wheel being worth charged for.
1. when jaws selected the arrow keys don't respond in the menus
2. on windows seven home premium 32 bit i seem to keep playing the role of
both players

how is this worth 20 dollars?

Re: [Audyssey] x wheel unlocking problem

2012-07-06 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Allan,
There is actually a copy paste feature. It works fine on my end.
Email me privately and I'll see what I can dig out. It must be a rare and
deep rooted bug because looking at my code yields no possible methods as to
how this could go wrong, so I'll have to take you through it step by step to
try and reproduce the issue.

Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] x wheel how can this be a charged game?

2012-07-06 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Thomas and all,
If anyone prefers the original Freedom Wheel of Fortune and it works no
problem for them then by all means continue to play that one. Nobody is in
any way forced to purchase the game. However, in my experience there are
many issues with the Freedom Games version. The first and perhaps most
serious one is there is a Type Mismatch error message every time you get a
letter right, at which point the game completely exits, making it totally
unplayable. Other issues include a lack of comprehensive documentation, no
computer player and therefore hardly any challenge or competition in any
way, and an obvious lack of interest in maintaining it since the last
version seems to have been released over six years ago.
I have an electronic Wheel of Fortune game, again that I can't play due to
the visual element, so I decided to make a version similar to that one,
hence the birth of X-Wheel. However that has even gone above and beyond my
original plans, so in my view the Freedom version pretty much holds no
contest as far as I am concerned.
Admittedly X-Wheel has had a few overlooked issues crop up which are now, I
believe, fixed, however it has been thoroughly tested and I am well
satisfied with the result. Also as previously stated I do plan to maintain
it and, depending on reception, add other popular features, such as online
play, difficulty levels, puzzle creators and the like. This, I believe,
makes it unique in the market and therefore I decided to make it commercial.

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Hi Ryan,

No worries. I for one agree with you. I understand there are bugs in
the game and the price seems high in light of the fact there is a free
Wheel of Fortune game floating around written by Freedom Games or
whatever. Still, William didn't have the right to insult Damien, and
state that its not worth $20 when it is clear Damien is trying hard to
make a commercial product. He has fixed two patches in as many days
which I'd expect from a developer of commercial software.

On 7/6/12, Ryan Conroy staindadd...@juno.com wrote:

First of all, it's worth 15. lol Secondly, maybe it has a few bugs that
still need to be ironed out? That's no reason to insult the developer
and
say how can you charge me for this game. Blah blah blah like you always
seem

to do.
Thomas, Raul, who ever reads this, I'm sorry, but I'm just sick of this.
Everytime there's a little bug in a game, this kid has to complain about
it.

If you don't think it's worth your money, don't buy it. Simple as that.
Myself personally, I find the game challenging, and was happy to put up
the

15 dollars for it.

Just my two cents worth.

Ryan

Hi Charles,
You can get an indication as to what version is released by looking on the
download page of the game. In the basic information it gives you the current
version number. Additionally, something which I actually forgot to document
is that you can press v from the main menu in order to figure out what
version you are using.
Also let's not forget the change log in the documentation which gives you
all the latest bug fixes and changes etc.

Hope that helps.

Teething problems? Maybe if you and my Yellow Lab get into a tug of war
using teeth and no hands, there would be a teething problem. He cheats by
working his way around the ring to where you grab it. He does have sharp
people chewers! Although he only weighs 70 pounds, I'll bet he would win
the battle! (ornery grin)

As for the download that includes all current bug fixes, is there an
indication that this is the newest file? If not, how recently was this
made available? Come to think of it, this might be a suggestion for the
future: Put some kind of explanation to indicate that this is the latest
version, and when it was made available. This will eliminate possible
confusion. Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] X-Sight Interactive announces the release of X-Wheel

2012-07-05 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Kelly and all,
I have just released a 1.0.1 patch which fixes a few issues:
The puzzle is now spoken if the puzzle is filled without it being solved,
I.E. letters are guessed and vowels purchased all the way through the game
until the puzzle is full.

The SAPI rates are now more adjustable, from 0 to 20.
The game will now interface properly with System Access and NVDA.

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Hi Damien and All,

This is a great game! I've only played a couple rounds, but enjoyed what I
saw so registered it soon after. The only change I'd like to see is a
better way of adjusting the speech rate for SAPI synthesizers. I found the
fast setting to be too fast, whereas in games like those from Jim
Kitchen, you can adjust the rate by going to a specific number. I think
that would be better, but that's just me. Also, when the computer player
won the last game I played in the demo version, JAWS didn't read out the
solved puzzle, and I was wondering what it was. Other than that, I'm
impressed with this product.

Thanks.

This game is cool and I'm really liking it. I'll probably be buying this
momentarily. For now, some ideas.
Firstly you forgot to include the dll needed to work with NVDA, and I
believe system access, in the installer. For anyone having issues you can
just put it from any other game into the xWheel directory and it will
work.
Also, I do think the interface could work much better. When it's your
turn, I think you should just be able to press enter to spin or just hit a
voul to buy it, and pressing s could let you solve, while pressing the
arrow keys would let you review the puzzle, maybe even replace the blank
spaces with a click sound to speed things up. Pressing tab could show the
scoreboard and puzzle info. Right now, the audio form looks rather...
Weird and it's just slow at times.
Lastly I do think the crowd could react a little more, maybe some booing
when you get a letter wrong, some cheering and things like that for
getting higher values on the wheel and winning big. If you need sound help
I'll gladly give a hand.

Now then... off to buy this thing!

Hi,

OK, now this is interesting. I was in the middle of the second round in a
game. I had managed to buy just about all the vowels, and got one wrong.
On the computer's next turn, it went to buy a vowel, and I was sure it
would get the last one. To my surprise, it just sat there, almost as
though it was thinking hard. Eventually, a dialog came up saying something
about there being an error in the computer's AI as it had made several
attempts to guess the letter, and that the error had been logged. I
pressed the OK button, and the game quit. What happened, and where exactly
was the error logged?

Thanks.

[Audyssey] Moderator: Off Topic Messages

2011-08-26 Thread Damien C. Pendleton
Hey List,
I must once again bring up the painful but somehow ironically recently
reoccurring subject of off topic messages on list. It keeps being stated,
reminded, warned etc, and it keeps slipping by the wayside.
The guidelines, and the moderators in person, have clearly stated that all off
topic messages should be sent to Kevin, Tom and myself for review before
posting to the Audyssey list, either to our individual addresses, or to us as a
whole at gamers-ow...@audyssey.org.
We have already placed one or two people on moderated status for the posting of
nonapproved messages within the last week and I'm afraid we shall continue to
enforce the guidelines to keep the list running as smooth as possible. This
means that unfortunately I will have to place Hayden on moderated status along
with those who are already on moderated status for the same reason. Please, as
with the last topic, nobody reply to Hayden's post.

Re: [Audyssey] hunter1.0, the jump game and super mario brothers

2011-08-23 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Jack,
All these games are very hard to come by these days. In fact, I had never
heard of the Jump game until you mentioned it just now.
As far as Alien Outback etc goes, just out of curiosity what features are in
the older versions that you are looking for that aren't in the newer ones?
Games such as Troopanum, Hunter, Alien Outback, are still available, but
just updated, with bug fixes and better features etc, and therefore it is
not only advisable but also encouraged to update the games for maximum
stability and performance. If you are looking for Troopanum 1.0 because of
the classic game play, BSC do offer Troopanum 1.6, yes it has slightly
different sounds, but the classic game is still there.

Hope that helps.

Damien.

Hi all,
I wanted to ask you guys some questions about abandoned games. First
of all, does anyone have hunter1.0 and troopanum1.0? Also, do you have
the jump game from pb-games? I have all of them except the jump game.
Also, does anyone have the older version of alien outback from ESP?
Don't worry it's not cracking, all I want is the demo version, in
fact, since I have a reg code I am most likely able to use the same
key to register the game. And finally, I have the super mario brothers
game from dragon slayer games. It might be a concept demo, but anyway,
I unzipped it and didn't see a .exe file to start the game, but I
found mario.tkn and thaught that had something to do with starting the
game but it didn't. Really, it would be better if they compiled it so
you wouldn't have to unzip it and go hunting for the game.
Thanks.
best regards,
jack

[Audyssey] X-Sight Interactive News

2011-07-24 Thread Damien C. Pendleton
Hey guys,
After ever such a long time of silence, we are back with a chunk of information
for the taking.
We are still in the process of working on our audiogames. Some small, and one
rather large which I hope everyone will enjoy. I won't divulge too much
information here, except that it is a sidescrolling adventure. Also, I won't be
promising any release dates, since we all know what can sometimes get in the
way while developing games.
Never fear though...We plan to release audio snippets to wet your appetite as
the game comes closer to completion. Which brings me very nicely to my next
point.
Often, a single news item at the bottom of a webpage doesn't warrant a small
entry such as an immediate idea, thought or event. Twitter, on the other hand,
seems great for it and, my personal experiences with Twitter have convinced me
to set one up for X-Sight related stuff as well.
All news entries, behind-the-scenes information, audio clips etc will be posted
there as they happen. It will be the first place to receive news items, and the
only place to receive our regular mini progress report posts and short audio
material.
Therefore now, those who are interest are free to log into Twitter (or sign up
for an account if you don't have one), and follow us at XSINews. This will be
replacing our previous blog, since it is easier to maintain and, in my opinion,
a lot more secure.
Hope to see you there!

Damien Pendleton

Re: [Audyssey] looking for an old game the savage gamut

2011-07-24 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Alex,
I took over the project quite a while back, but it is now abandonware since
I am taking the time to write my own games. If I write a boxing game it'll
be completely from scratch.
I hosted my abandonware products through Dropbox a while back, I'm not sure
if anyone still has them or is even hosting them.
The older, original installer should no longer be used, the new installer
tidies some things up and announces its intent to be used as abandonware and
also includes the Savage Gamut Trainer as an option, as well as hopefully
making it Windows Vista/7 compatible.

If it needs reuploading just let me know and I'll dig it up.
Regards,
Damien.

hacked.
It was called the savage gamut, and was a boxing game. It had a stupidly
complicated interface, I bought a copy years ago, but I guess I must have
lost it in one of several harddrive crashes over the years.

does anyone by any chance still have a copy of this game?
as I am starved of entertainment, and thought I would try it out again.
I dug up the old training program, from a backup, but can't find the full
game installer.

thanks for any help,
Alex.

Re: [Audyssey] A Sincere Apology to the List

2011-07-21 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Thomas,
As I said to the list at large yesterday when all this blew up, I can see
why you became angry and frustrated. I guessed it was something that was
happening over time with pressure and harassment from people from all areas.
However, some of the things you said in your message was totally uncalled
for and intolerable. I have gotten very angry in the past, but I have tried
to keep that anger to myself. Though I can see why you might have wanted to
write a message like that (sometimes I am guilty of acting without thinking,
though not to such a public extent), I felt totally shocked, especially from
a co-moderator's point of view, at some of your choicest phrases in that
message.
I am well aware of how reasonable you generally are, and as I said to the
list, I thought you might come back after calming down.
I especially admire you for having the strength and courage to apologise to
the list publicly, and taking this into consideration and your past
behaviour on list I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.
I will be sending you a personal email shortly regarding the moderator side
of things.

Regards,
Damien.

Subject: [Audyssey] A Sincere Apology to the List

Hello Everyone,

I’d like to take the time here to offer my sincere apologies for my
extremely disgraceful behavior yesterday morning. I know there are
some here who will most likely view my behavior as childish, immature,
etc. it was certainly unprofessional of me to say some of the things I
said, and do some of the things I did. Yet, now that I've had some
time to get away from the list, get away from the situation, cool
down, and get some perspective I can see both sides of this issue a
little clearer.

I realize that certain members of the list, other game developers,
felt they were being bullied, pressured, and Che felt it was his job
to stand up and defend them the only way he knew how to. I take his
points, even though he was much harsher than he needed to be, and I'll
attempt to be more diplomatic in the words and things I say on this
list in the future. I must honestly confess that it is hard for me not
to comment on a topic or give my opinion even when the person or
persons involved don't want to hear it. So I need to monitor my urge
to write a quick reply and make absolutely sure it says what I mean,
and that the message does not contain any words that can be
misinterpreted by the intended party or parties receiving it.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is simply this. E-mail is a very
impersonal form of communication. To us it is just a bunch of text on
the screen that gets read back to us via our screen reader of choice
without any sense of the emotion, intent, or purpose behind it. It is
us, the reader, who interpret it and assign emotions and intent to
that message. It sometimes is interpreted correctly, and sometimes it
can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings on both sides. Which
is what I feel happened yesterday.

I certainly do not want to offer you any excuses for my actions
yesterday, but I do feel I owe you an explanation of why I did what I
did. What I'm about to say isn't being said to get sympathy, lay a
guilt trip on anybody, or hand you a sad story, etc. I merely want to
give you a few facts that lead up to my behavior yesterday in the
first place. You are free to reject or accept this as you will.

In my message yesterday I made reference to some problems with my
marriage, and let me say these are quite true, and as you might expect
it is a very stressful and painful time for me. I consider the issue
very personal so I don't want to get into it at any real length, but
my wife and I have been having problems for quite a long time now and
the situation has tended to progress from bad to worse. We have been
arguing about everything from our family finances to how much time I
spend on my computer working on games when she feels I should be
spending that time with her or my son.

Here is an example of what I mean. On July 4th my wife wanted to go to
the fireworks as a family as we do every year, but I didn't want to go
because for me listening to fireworks is nothing but a bunch of loud
noise. I felt those two hours or so could be better spend at home
working on game code, editing sounds, and working on game
documentation. It went over with her like a rock, and that started an
argument that ruined the entire evening for us both.

Having these kinds of personal issues is bad enough, but there are
certain individuals in this community who are pushing, nagging, and
putting pressure on me to release Mysteries of the Ancients and
Raceway on some unrealistic time table I can't simply meet and have
any kind of time for my family, work, etc. I don't know if it is their
ignorance of how much time and energy it takes to complete a game

2011-07-20 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Darren,
This is no laughing matter. He is being pressured and harassed on and off
lists, which can make anybody break under the strain. If one person breaks,
it can affect their mood, and their mood can affect those around them. It
then becomes a tense atmosphere until the pressured person finally snaps and
spends more time pandering to the whims of the pressuring situation, at
which point the atmosphere becomes cold as well as tense. And under that
sort of atmosphere, anyone can snap, including relationships. Trust me, it
has happened to me. Not exactly through game development, but through other
situations around me.
So please don't make false accusations or assumptions about Thomas guilt
tripping, or laugh about it. Thomas is a very reasonable guy and I'm sure he
wouldn't just say something to guilt trip anyone. I've seen his activity for
five years roughly now, and he is a firm but fair character. But he would
never flame anyone. He had his opinions, but they came in the form of
constructive criticism rather than downright flaming.

Regards,
Damien.

Darren,
True, but certain conditions affect our choices, either for better or worse.
We aren't just a computer who does everything from human programmed
conditions or random number generators. We have emotions, we have
commitments, and we have families. If our commitments get compromised by
others to such an extent, then his emotions would have kicked in, which
isn't exactly his fault. It is natural human instinct to do what is easiest
for us, and if the pressure has mounted up so high that the easiest thing
would be to work more for a quiet life, then he has done that throutgh
instinct, not personal choice or preference. Who knows how much this guy has
been harassed? All we know is it has made him snap, and that isn't tolerable
either.

Hi Richard and all,
OK, I will publicly apologise and stand corrected about Thomas's reaction
to all of this. When I wrote my email this morning I was in the middle of
broadcasting and Thomas's final resignation and unsubscription
notification caught me before the rest did, and I wrote and responded in
haste and frustration.
I have just gone back and read the archive and was shocked to read how
inappropriately Thomas handled this situation and as co-moderator would
have expected better of him. I was additionally shocked that he could
insult and flame someone as decent as Che and accuse him of attacking and
insulting him. However, also as a member on the USAGames mailing list I
have seen some of the attacks that the guy has been through from members
of the blind community in general, and can see why he feels as frustrated
as he does.
Whether Che said anything out of turn or not, others have also
contributed, both on this list, his other list, and, though I obviously
haven't seen this, privately as well.
Usually, I would have thought Thomas quite logical, reasonable and calm,
and I can't imagine why all this blew out of nothing.
Please bare with me as I return to reading this huge pile of messages that
will undoubtedly present the full story, and I shall then form my opinions
and make my decisions from there.
I do think some of us could've handled the situation better than we did,
including myself. As I said all I can do is apologise for the
misunderstanding on my part.

Regards,
Damien.

Hi all.
I cannot believe what has gone on here, and really how blinded people
have been.

Many of the responses in the last couple of hours since Thomas left I
just can't understand. I think people need to reread what has
happened.
The person I feel most sorry for is Che. From what I understand and
have read this all kicked off because of Thomas having his opinion on
programming languages, which he messaged about in terms that were
misunderstood by many. To be honest I do think the way Thomas writes
can very often seem like he is coming across as superior because of
his college training in programming and years of experience etc. I
know he offers lots of people advice and fully respect this, but he
does preach a lot as well. So Che wrote back expressing his
displeasure at Thomas's words and his way of writing. Now if people
read Che's message or messages back they will hopefully see that
nowhere in this did he personally attack Thomas, just the way Thomas
wrote and how it came across to him. Then Thomas basically flew off
the handle and started swaring and personally insulting Che, which I
thought was disgusting. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we lose
another developer here in Che because of Thomas's reaction and others
later support for him and open hostilitytowards Che.
I think Thomas is really a great guy who has been put under pressure
by people too much with regards to bringing out MOTA etc. I do believe
this community has itself to blaim a lot for winding up developers and
expecting too much. But Thomas's reaction was so over the top and out
of order from a list member, but a moderator as well, well frankly its
not on.
I think its a real shame that MOTA is not going to be worked on for a
while at least, and we could lose it forever, as I like the game and
was looking forward to it. Thomas has always informed the community
too much in a way of what has been going on with MOTA and taking too
many suggestions etc on board in my opinion. Making the game how
people wanted it not how he wanted it. This has been a lot of his
problem, and he has lost the excitment and enjoyment of creating this
game because of this.
I think Darren in a way has got it spot on about him bringing up a
load of stuff in his last message or two, Thomas I mean, about his
marriage etc, this is unnecessary and is intentionally or not, an
attempt to put the blaim on certain people other than himself.
Che, you never personaly insulted Thomas, and I hope otheres realise
this. I hope you stay with us and don't take Thomas's disgusting words
and personal attacks to heart.
Damien I think as a moderator you are being too biast, Thomas is a
good guy yes, but he has been totally out of order here

I'm sure judges have sentenced people for forgery, yet I am sure they

Well said.

Remember the whole piracy issue? When Thomas decided to post a request
for

a
graphic novel on the list and then pleaded it was a mistake? Well he
should
have gone then really because he was quite happy to threaten moderation
or
banning on people for posting pirated content. So he proved then he had
double standards. When I proved this publically on list he privately
emailed
me and said apologise or I'll put you on moderated. He must have
expected

me
to beg forgiveness. Which I didn't. suffice to say I got put on
moderated

but that never bothered me because after all said and done, I new that I
was
right and he was wrong and I wasn't about to devalue what I said for
apologising for something that I saw no need for apologising for.

Today we've seen yet another example of his true colours the difference
is
now he's stepped way over the line far more than any owner of this list
can
justify. He has to go now pure and simple. Even if the owner was to say
no
let him stay well who's going to respect him now? he's done his own
damage
really.

Personally I'm not sorry to see him go. I new it was only a matter of
time
before something else happened and it has. oh well never mind he
mentioned
James north as well, well I didn't like him either so either way it's no
real big loss.

Hi all gamers,

Re: [Audyssey] runtime error

2011-06-27 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi there Angela,
You don't actually have to install the WinKit game if you don't want to,
though I hope you do since it is a good game.

However, there is WinLife3 which is just as good, also made by Jim Kitchen.
There are, in actual fact, two components you need to install.
The Visual Basic 6 runtimes and the DirectX libraries for Visual Basic.
They are both located on my website. The norm would be to have to take
dx8vb.dll from an XP machine and install it to your machine, but since that
is a little complicated I have simplified it in all cases.

The Visual Basic Runtimes can be found at the following link:
http://www.x-sight-interactive.net/xsight/sysreq/vbrun60sp6.exe
The DirectX8 module for VB can be found at the following link:
http://www.x-sight-interactive.net/xsight/sysreq/dx8vb.exe
This is an installer I have made personally to install DX8VB.dll to the
correct location and register it with Windows.

Having installed those two components, your games should work no problems.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Damien.

Hi Angela.

I wonder if this is the visual basic problem which many people have found
trying to play old games while running vista and windows 7.
There are several components (noteably the visual basic runtime
libraries), that shipped with xp, but not with vista or 7.

No need to worry though. Just go to www.kitchinscin.net and download the
winkit.exe file. This creates a directory to run all of Jim kitchin's free
games, but more than that it installs the components needed to run them,
which are also needed to run many other older games too.

Often if someone has a problem running an older game on windows vista or
7, just downloading and installing winkit will fix it and this is probably
what you should try first.

Hi David,

I offer the BGT audio game development engine, which uses a scripting
language with C++ like syntax, as one of the products on my website. It
implements the things you mention. Screen reader support is coming up in
the 1.1 release, and Sapi support is already present. Online capabilities
are there, as well as a bunch of other things like keyboard and mouse
input etc. In short, it wraps the low level functionality into an easy to
use scriptable package. If this is something you are interested in, check
out www.blastbay.com/bgt.php

Hello Everyone,

I've got a game idea that I'd like to run with. I'm not sure if i'm
going to make it freeware or pay that depends on how it all turns out.

I'd like to know a good language to start with? I'm also interested in
any game specific tutorials or howtos something to get started with. A
lot of the books i've seen are just function or reference manuals on
language x, I can pick that up. I'm a newbie to game writing, but not
to programming although my emphasis is on web scripting, php, perl,
javascript, none of those will obviously do. I can pick things up
fairly quickly. I'd also prefer accessibility in the development
process, a good development environment. I'm using jfw 11, and NVDA
for my screen readers and am considering the possibility of making the
game sapi aware.

I haven't made any final decisions still planning things out, but
don't want to switch languages midway through. Some features I know I
want are:

1. Usable with either a screen reader or sapi voice (user preference)
2. online playable (though that probably won't be in the initial release).
3. Ease of maintaining and modifications with possible user
customizations allowed

I thought I'd throw this out and see what comes back.
Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Tom,
I certainly oppose it being SAPI driven personally. I'm very open on voices,
just as long as it isn't a rubbish one, but I feel a game like MOTA does
well to be recorded speech.
Yes, I believe the rate should be slowed down though. I do find it rather
difficult to understand at the current rate. Again, I don't mind which voice
you use, whether you go for Acapella, Cepstral, Scansoft, ATT, Loquendo or
anything like that. Just as long as they are not the Microsoft voices like
Sam, Mike and Mary. Lol.

Just my thoughts.

Damien.

Subject: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

Hi all,

As I am now in the process of finalizing things in Mysteries of the
Ancients for 1.0 release candidate 1 I would like to get your input on
a few issues I have set aside until now. One of these issues is the
matter of speech output for the game.

As you all know back around beta 18 I rerecorded all the speech clips
using Scansoft Tom's voice. Some have pointed out that the speech rate
is way too fast for them, and they want me to rerecord the speech
clips at a slower rate. I would certainly do so if I could figure out
what is a comfortable speech rate for the majority of players out
there. Its a bit hard for me to personally judge that is I tend to
listen to speech at a faster rate anyway. However, I'd be willing to
give it a try if people are still interested in me slowing the speech
rate down.

Others are just unhappy of the fact that I switched voices let alone
speech rate. I gather quite a lot of you liked Acapella Heather, and
many of you would rather see her return to the final release rather
than Scansoft Tom. Again this is certainly doable if this is what the
majority of you want. Either way I'm going to have to rerecord and
update some voice clips.

Finally, there is a third group asking for Sapi 5 support in the game.
While I'm not completely against the idea I'd like to point out that
doing so would require quite a bit of time rewriting all of the speech
code to use Sapi 5 rather than prerecorded speech as the game wasn't
developed with Sapi output in mind. Though, it is possible.

My concerns with Sapi are this. First, that not everyone owns a high
quality Sapi TTS voice, and therefore some users wouldn't have the
same quality of experience as some of us with better voices like the
ATT, Scansoft, or Cepstral voices to use.Second, I'm working with
Blind Games Brazil and others to make Mysteries of the Ancients
available to foreign non-English speaking markets. Its just easier to
do that when someone can record the necessary speech clips, and drop
them in the speech folder. Finally, last but not least, after we are
done with the Windows release I'm going to pport the game to Mac OS
and Linux and it will be easier if the game isn't tied to anything
platform specific like Sapi 5.

So as I currently see it I can either rerecord Scansoft Tom, restore
the original Acapela Heather clips, or I can record new ones using an
Ivona voice like Jenifer, Bryan, or Ashley, etc. Any thoughts or
opinions?

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Tom,
I have my Jaws quite fast, at around 70%. However, with an audio game where
you have to process quite a lot of information, I would need a steady voice
to go by. I couldn't listen to lots of creatures and traps nearby and start
to examine my surroundings with a voice that's speaking about nine or ten
words a second. I associate that kind of speed with skimming a text document
personally.

Damien.

Hi Karl,

True, but one of the issues is a lot of those who are making the
requests are foreign speaking customers where English is not their
native tongue. Therefore they want the voice slowed down so they can
understand the game better. That's understandable, but how slow is too
slow and how fast is too fast for them.

I do understand where they are coming from. I had some French and
German in high school and college, and although I know the basics of
the languages I don't speak them every day, and if I were to actually
talk to someone going 90 miles a minute in French or German half of it
would get passed me as I can't process it that fast. That said, as
most of the users do know English I think they could probably get by
with it set to the current rate. It actually sounds a bit slow to me,
but I'm comfortable with the current rate personally.

On 6/25/11, Karl Belanger karl.belan...@comcast.net wrote:

the

problem that if you slow the voice down to much, people will start to say

you decide to slow it down, I think the simplest way to determine the
best

speed would be to record a few samples at different rates, and see which
people like most, or another possibility would be to estimate the rate a
person would say the same rate and set it for that.
Personally, I say leave it as is.

Hi all,

I released MOTA beta20 at 4:00 PM, and I still haven't gotten any
feedback on it. I was just wondering if anyone downloaded it, had a
chance to play, and if so what were your thoughts?

The reason I ask is I think I've just about got everything stable for
the Windows platform, and I'd like to confirm that everything is
working well. In a case like that positive feedback as in, everything
runs smoothly etc, is just as helpful to a developer as bugs and
error reports. Knowing everything is working smoothly will allow me to
turn my attention to other things like adding levels, user
registration, etc rather than fixing bugs and so on.

Cheers!

FYI: JAWS with Eloquence, set at 30 percent, is about the same speed as
the current setting of the speech in MOTA's beta 20. The reason that
people might think that the speech of MOTA is a bit faster is that
Scansoft Tom, at that pace, may sound a bit clipped.

Hi,
It all depends on the message content. A spam filter will usually look for
certain words or phrases, and if they match, bam. It puts them in your spam
folder, even though they may be genuine. That's precisely why they will give
you an interface where you can check each message. For example, I get a
single email every day telling me which message have been filtered as spam
the previous day with a deliver link next to it, so that if I believe they
are genuine I can click deliver and it will take it to my inbox for my
inspection.

This is usually something on either your or your ISP's end. If you run your
own spam filter or otherwise know how to access your ISP account's spam
filter I would make sure that audyssey.org is in your list of approved
domains. Otherwise I would suggest consulting professional help.

Subject: [Audyssey] messages appearing in my spam folder

Hi all,
I am having a big problem with getting messages. When I sent my first
request to Damien about the new installers, I didn't hear from him in
two days, so I thaught someone may have unsubscribed me or put me on
vacation mode. Now finally I get a message, and, having found out that
people were getting messages in there spam folder I looked in mine
and, just as I thought found two messages from gamers in my spam
folder! Is there a reason for this?
Thanks, and please make sure this next message that I get does not
appear in my spam folder.
best regards,
jack

could you please send me the new installers for all of your games?

Re: [Audyssey] looking for older installer for self destruct

2011-06-15 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Brandon,
I'm afraid I no longer have the old installer. It was very messy, didn't
install things to the proper locations etc. It also didn't install the
DirectX8 VB wrapper for users running versions of Windows above XP, and the
uninstaller didn't work. The newer one is clean, functions properly, and
installs any necessary dependencies.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] looking for new installer of self destruct

2011-06-15 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Jack,
The new installer fixes most of the issues, although not the fact that the
keygen doesn't work. Some people have reported this but I have no way of
discovering the source of the problem since I don't have the code for the
keygen.
However, yes, the new uninstaller works, it installs the keygen to the Self
Destruct folder, it installs the DirectX8 VB wrapper for users running
Windows above XP, it adds the keygen to the start menu shortcuts, and the
uninstaller works no problem, all on the newer installation.
Since the games are now modified to state their place in the audiogames
hierarchy I will allow third party hosts to the files, hence the reason why
I uploaded them to Dropbox. I.E. there are no references to XLStudios, nor
X-Sight Interactive in the new games, since we are no longer able to support
them for varying reasons.

As for the Super Deekout cheats, you have to earn them. *Grin*.
Again, the link to the new Self Destruct installation file is:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5285041/selfdest.exe
Hope that helps.
Regards,
Damien.

Hi Damien,,
My installer of self destruct, sd116.exe installs things to the right
places except the keygen. Also the keygen doesn't generate a key, it
doesn't work when I generate my product id, and the uninstaller says
the uninstall log file c:\program files x86\xl studeos, si\self
destruct\unins000.dat is in a format that is not recognized by this
version of the uninstaller. Cannot uninstall. Is all of this because I
have the old installer? If I do, will you send me the newer one? Also
would you mind if TomWard hosted your old games as downloads? Also
does anyone have all of the cheats for super deakout?
Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] disrespect for gamers: was Re: Lunimals version 2.5b

2011-06-09 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hi Tom,
It's all just a matter of personal preference, in my opinion. Computers
aren't half as fun without any games. To be honest I'm not a big Windows fan
myself, but it's what I'm used to and have been brought up with. After
playing with a copy of Vinux and a friend's Mac I came to the conclusion
that I'd be better sticking with Windows. Not only from a games point of
view, but interfaces, development, familiarity etc. Even after playing
around with a Vista computer I didn't like that as much as XP. I can't speak
for Windows 7 since I have never tried it, but if a game that I spent a lot
of time playing didn't work on Windows 7 I wouldn't even consider upgrading.
Most of my days are spent playing if not making games, therefore I'd be lost
if I upgraded and a game didn't work as expected. Just because I make my own
games doesn't mean that I'm going to stop playing games that Liam, Justin,
David, Phil etc have come out with just because they use VB6 or an old
language that only supports old systems. I'd rather have as many games to
play as possible than forfeit them just because I may want to upgrade to a
better system. Now if a game was updated and for whatever reason it didn't
support XP, then I may have to purchase a second machine to run Windows 7
just so that I can play that game. But I would probably use my XP machine as
my main one, at least until I got fully accustomed to my Windows 7 one and I
was sure that all my favourite games would work on it.

Regards,
Damien.

Hi Charles and all,

the issue has nothing to do with appreciation. I certainly appreciate
all the work Jim does, and like several of his games. Its actually the
fact because I appreciate those games I want to see them improved and
made to meet current development standards and practices. Saying the
games don't work on Windows X so don't upgrade is simply not an answer
for most people. Given a choice I would upgrade and forget about the
games, but it would certainly be better to upgrade and still be able
to play the games too.

In a sense I've already done that. You all know I am running Linux not
Windows on my laptop, and am currently looking at getting various
games running under the Windows emulator, wine, and if that doesn't
pan out so be it. I'm not going to cry over not playing various games
I can't take with me. Obviously, though, I want to keep and play as
many games as I can.

Bottom line, given a choice of buying a new PC with Windos X on it or
sticking with Windows XP for the rest of their life to play Jim's
games isn't a contest. I'd say most people would buy the new PC and
request Jim upgrade his games, but playing his games wouldn't stop
them from upgrading in and of itself.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Links for Old Titles

2011-06-09 Thread Damien C. Pendleton
Hey everyone,
As previously mentioned, I have modified the old games to state they are
abandonware and have therefore offered them for temporary download using
Dropbox. They will be up until Monday 13th June, so anyone who wants to host
them on a more permanent site may download them during these times and do so.
The games and their links are as follows:

The Savage Gamut:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5285041/gamut.exe
Note: Includes the Savage Gamut, Savage Gamut Redemption and Savage Gamut
Trainer all in one package. It lets you customise the installation to include
or exclude any one of these titles from being installed.

Danger City:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5285041/dc02.exe

Acefire:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5285041/acefire20setup.exe

Self Destruct:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5285041/selfdest.exe
Note: Also installs the keygen to the correct location and provides access in
the start menu.

All games have been modified in the following ways:

1. References to the personal or business names of developers have been removed
wherever possible from the game executables and documentation.
2. The installers clearly state that they are abandonware before installation
to give the user chance to exit or continue as they wish.
3. All reported and known issues have been well documented.
4. The Self Destruct and Savage Gamut installers have been completely
rewritten, in order to make them neater and easier for maintenance by the end
user. For example, the Savage Gamut packages are now in one customisable
package, Self Destruct installs cleanly, the uninstaller also works as opposed
to the last version, etc.
5. A couple of minor details have also been modified in the Acefire application
and a few bugs were fixed before final release.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] Registering Self Destruct was:Re: Links for Old Titles

2011-06-09 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Hey Ryan,
This is one of those issues that have been reported to me in the
documentation. As I said, I believe in the docs and on list, I don't have
the reg system nor key generation code and therefore was unable to fix it.
In fact, due to the fact that Jason obviously deliberately failed to provide
the reg system, and not so wisely also failed to remove all references from
the code and the project file itself, I have been unable to get the game to
compile or run at all, therefore the source code as was given to me is
utterly useless.

Regards,
Damien.

Hi everyone,

I know these games are no longer supported, but I wanted to see if anyone

I reinstalled the new version of Self Destruct with the Key Gen in the

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this? I'd really like the full
