[Gimp-user] Reply via List Headers [was: Re: Calm and rational Save/Export workflow report ; )]
Von: Richard Gitschlag strata_ran...@hotmail.com Then the real question is why every time I hit Reply, Hotmail prefills my form with the individual user's email instead of the mailing list's, and I have to change it every time before hitting Send. GIMP or otherwise, minor impediments like these are quite annoying. That probably happens because Hotmail doesn't handle the List headers that are part of each message, e.g.: List-Id: GIMP Developer List gimp-developer-list.gnome.org List-Unsubscribe: http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/options/gimp-developer-list, mailto:gimp-developer-list-requ...@gnome.org?subject=unsubscribe List-Archive: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-developer-list/ List-Post: mailto:gimp-developer-l...@gnome.org List-Help: mailto:gimp-developer-list-requ...@gnome.org?subject=help List-Subscribe: http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-developer-list, mailto:gimp-developer-list-requ...@gnome.org?subject=subscribe It should be rather easy for Hotmail's developers with their near limitless resources to implement a List Reply feature (or make Reply behave differently for list mails, although this may break other users' expectations). Additional features like links to the archive, unsubscribe or subscribe would be possible as well. Re: [Gimp-user] Reply via List Headers
Von: Jay Smith j...@jaysmith.com Michael, I use Thunderbird 3.1.10 -- not the latest version, but quite happy with it. This version of Thunderbird does the same thing (replies to the individual poster, instead of the list). There are or have been extensions to provide list reply commands - I have used those myself. Current Thunderbird versions provide them without the need of extensions. In the last few years, the Gimp lists are the _only_ lists I receive that result in this behavior. Initially, I was quite annoyed by lists that had no reply-to set - but that was years ago. Nowadays, I like the consistent behavior of reply going to the author, and list reply going to the list. Elitist attitude, I guess, but it still feels good :) Regards, Michael -- Empfehlen Sie GMX DSL Ihren Freunden und Bekannten und wir belohnen Sie mit bis zu 50,- Euro! https://freundschaftswerbung.gmx.de ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list

Hi there, we've added a new donation option to our website - a Flattr button. It is located just below the donations button in the navigation menu of http://www.gimp.org Flattr is a microdonation service that allows you to distribute an arbitrary amount of money - for example 2 euros - to all the things you flattr (i.e. click on their Flattr buttons) per month. [Gimp-user] Yay, mainstream! - and trojaned GIMP installers
Hi, recently, we're seeing more and more sign of GIMP becoming mainstream - the availability of several GIMP installers for the Microsoft Windows platforms loaded with trojans is certainly an indication for that. The most common trojan seems to be InstallIQ. A piece of software that grants the providers of the actual installers plausible deniability because the installers itself is clean, and because the user has to agree to install additional utilities during setup. Case 1: Step 1: the victim is sent a scam mail pointing to a file at photo-host.net/ (which disguses as a image upload site). Step 2: the files provided there are .gmp files (huh?) Step 3: for viewing those files, there's a link to gimphost.com, where the infected installer is located Case 2: Another victim or culprit of a related scam seems to be the gimpshop.com site, which used to host a modifed version of GIMP which resembled the Photoshop UI. Either its original author has gone to the Dark Side, or that site has been taken over by a scammer - it is distributing InstallIQ-infected installers. Advice: If you see any GIMP installer sites which have a fine print with phrases like is distributing a modified installer which is different from the original ones or InstallIQ or the installer is compliant with the original software manufacturer's policies then do the following: STAY AWAY FROM THEM! -- Regards, Michael ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list

[Gimp-user] Translate the Windows installer packages of GIMP 2.8.x
Hi, some of you might have noticed that the Windows installers for GIMP 2.8.x, available from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net, offer a few more language options than previous releases - Deutsch, English, Italiano and Slovenski. This is due to the installer's language files, available at http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/tree/build/windows/installer/lang?h=gimp-2-8 (Polski has been added recently) - all of them contributed by users who want to make GIMP easier to install for their fellow countrymen. But there's still much work to do - GIMP itself has been translated in many more languages. So here is what you have to do in order to translate the installer to your language: 1. Get the original English language file - http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/plain/build/windows/installer/lang/en.setup.isl?h=gimp-2-8 (if you know how to use Git, then you may want to get the gimp-2-8 branch of git://git.gnome.org/gimp and work on the file in there) 2. Translate the file - Use a reasonably complete text editor (notepad probably won't cut it), and translate the messages to the desired language. Choose a suitable file name, have a look at http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/tree/build/windows/installer/lang?h=gimp-2-8 to see how the existing ones are named. The file contains lots of key=message lines, you want to translate the message parts only and leave the keys intact - this is how the installer will find the correct messages for its dialog windows. You may also give the following application a try (I've never used it myself, though: http://www.freewebs.com/valarry/downloads.htm In any case, pay attention to the codepages you use when saving those files - Unicode is not supported here. If in doubt, check the language files of the Innosetup installer software, they specifiy the correct codepages: https://github.com/jrsoftware/issrc/tree/4af6f8f9fd9e6da2e5a8adf36c1a4fd324c64013/Files/Languages But please *do not* copy anything from them into your own files - those settings only belong there. 3. Contribute your translation back --- You got several possibilities to do this: a) If you're using Git, then you can either commit and push the change directly, or provide a properly formatted patch. b) You can attach the new file or the patch created to a new bug in GNOME Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GIMP Choose the Installer component for this, not the Localization c) You can attach either the file or the patch to a message to the gimp-developer list. We will check the file, and if all is well, your translation will be in the next Windows installer for GIMP 2.8.x - and your name will be in the list of GIMP contributors forever :) P.S. If you need help, please do not hesitate to ask - either on the list or in our IRC channel #gimp on irc.gimp.org P.P.S. Bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683710 is a request for using gettext for these translations. [Gimp-user] 3 months of Flattr, a summary
Moin, three months ago, on 2012-07-16, the Flattr button on http://www.gimp.org went public. Its corresponding Flattr thing had already existed a little while longer (since the beginning of June) to cater to a specific donation request. We didn't expect much of a revenue. Not because no one would flattr GIMP, but the concept of microdonation itself: people can donate to as many things per month as they like, and the minimum amount to be distributed per user and month is only 2 Euros. So a few cents per click is what one can expect, and that would certainly fit the definition and purpose of 'micro'. We were wrong. In July, 76 clicks turned into EUR 56,40. In August, 192 clicks into EUR 149,08, and September brought 168 clicks and EUR 178,13. These amounts are quite a lot more than expected. To put them into relation to our planned expenses, I looked up plane ticket prices from Germany to Madrid - the location for Libre Graphics Meeting 2013, http://libregraphicsmeeting.org/2012/2012/06/lgm-2013-dates-and-venue/ - and found them to be in the 170-200 Euros price range. So, about one month of Flattr revenue will pay for some contributors' tickets to LGM 2013 :) There are 111 Flattrs for October, so far. Many thanks to all users who donated, your contributions help a lot! P.S. Some thoughts about Flattr Our experience with Flattr has been an overall success so far. It is easy to use from an admin point of view, the inclusion of the button into our website was mostly painless, and the performance is beyond our expectations. The button is going to stay on http://www.gimp.org and http://docs.gimp.org However, our experience should not be generalized: - we've only got one single thing, whereas the typical use seems to be lots of things - e.g. blog posts, podcasts, images, ... - GIMP is already known and established, so it is not that surprising that there are Flattr users in our user base (no idea if new users joined Flattr due to our participation) - three months is rather short, we do not know how this will perform in future - we're not trying to make a living from the revenue - we don't flattr other things yet (something that really should happen, maybe a set amount per month distributed to a few selected outstanding examples of art created with GIMP? [if we can decide about that efficiently ;)]) -- Regards, Michael ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list

Von: Fpacius for...@gimpusers.com 2 - How do you change the language? The release notes say: A question that often arises is how to change the UI language in GIMP, which has traditionally been a bit cumbersome. Not any longer, it is now possible to change the language in Preferences. But, I don't find that option anywhere in the Preferences of 2.8.2. That's because the language selector has a compile-time dependency on iso-codes (see https://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-isocodes/ for a short description), and this was absent from the current OSX builds. [Gimp-user] download.dk - malicious or just sub-par?
Hi, we've been approached by download.dk about an award GIMP seems to have won on their site. They suggested to add this award to www.gimp.org with the usual link back to their site... Upon inspecting their GIMP download page, I'm not really sure if this is an elaborate scam, or just a sub-par try of implementing a downloads site: A strange driver update setup called installer.exe is more likely to be downloaded from their downloads page than the software the user intends to get. The link to this software is much more prominent. Von: Alex Vergara Gil a...@cphr.edu.cu But what is lost if I rotate and then adjust the canvas to the layers without doing any of the additional steps? This is evidently for lossy image formats like jpg where the cosine transform is over the rows and when you rotate the image details can be lost somewhere. For lossless image formats nothing will be lost off course. - 2x2 pixel image, solid black - rotate by 45° - enlarge canvas Yes, the result for this example is probably not correct, but even if it were, you couldn't call it 'no loss of details'. [Gimp-user] Added Bitcoin donation option
Hi there, we have added a Bitcoin address as a donation option to our donations page at http://www.gimp.org/donating/ The address is: 1NVMCeoBfTAJQ1qwX2Dx1C8zkcRCQWwHBq Was is Bitcoin? Wikipedia to the rescue: Bitcoin (BTC) is an online digital currency that is based on an open-source, peer-to-peer encryption protocol first described in 2009 by a pseudonymous developer (or developers) Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin is not managed by any government or central authority. Instead, it relies on an Internet-based network. [...] Bitcoins can be transferred through a computer or smartphone locally or internationally without an intermediate financial institution. Each bitcoin is subdivided into 100 million smaller units called satoshis, defined by eight decimal places. Check out the Wikipedia article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin for more information. There has been demand for a Bitcoin donation option for some time already. We had delayed that option because we couldn't really use Bitcoins per se - I still do not know about any place where plane tickets are for sale, and these are our biggest expenses overall. But there are finally some reliable exchanges popping up, which are located in countries where the responsible treasuries regulate them like any other exchange (i.e. not the Cayman Isles :) More recently I chose to delay adding the address due to the current Bitcoin hype, with prices well over USD 200 - I didn't want GIMP to appear like an opportunist who's just after quick money. Prices are now returning to sane levels, and stability in regard to exchange rates seems to return as well. We use the donated money to reimburse GIMP team members for travel and accommodation to conferences, most prominently the Libre Graphics Meetings. For Libre Graphics Meeting 2013 in Madrid, España (an awesome event, which all of us who went there are glad to have been able to attend), we also contributed to the global refund pool and sponsored drinks for the conference party at Mi madre era una Groupie in Calle Santa Polonia. I would like to ask you for an interview via e-mail to talk about GIMP and the Adobe's announce of their new payment scheme. My objective is to explain that there are a lot of other alternatives for profesional and casual designers. Hi Cora, this is Michael Schumacher, long-time contributor to GIMP and organizer of some sorts of things around it, e.g. getting the GIMP team to the Libre Graphics conference or making GIMP participate in Google Summer of Code. The article is going to be published in the technology supplement of the newspaper the next saturday, on may 18th. So it would be great if you could answer before wednesday. I will really apreciate it. I want to take the opportunity for sending my questions: ·Is GIMP complete option for people who don't want to pay for Photoshop? GIMP isn't supposed to be a copy of Adobe Photoshop. So if anyone approaches along I want Photoshop, but I don't want to pay for it and picks GIMP, they're most likely going to be disappointed. Why? They will only notice the differences and won't see the features GIMP has to offer. ·For what kind of user is GIMP? It is for users who can identify with the goals and characteristics set forth in our vision briefing, see http://gui.gimp.org/index.php/Vision_briefing They will have to realize that GIMP is a unique application, not striving to copy other software, but implementing its own goals and trying to achieve this in the best possible way. They are welcome to use it and participate in the development, but will discover that a solely demanding attitude won't get them very far. ·What do I will find in GIMP? Not sure if I understand this question - if you're searching for a description of GIMP's feature, then http://www.gimp.org/about/introduction.html could be the place to start. But the list there isn't exhaustive. ·What do you think about the new payment schemes adopted by companies like Adobe and Microsoft? I think that it won't have any noticeable impact on their revenue, but on the composition of the user base of their software. Instead of the users who pay for a couple of version of their software and then use it indefinitely, and the (few?) users who pirate it, they will have recurring payments from subscribers and suffer less piracy. ·Do you think that free options like GIMP will grow in the market? Maybe. I expect that some users might move from Adobe Photoshop to GIMP, but I am not sure if we will notice the increase. But if we do, I hope it won't be as endless streams of mails requesting to make GIMP more like Photoshop. ·What is the future for licensing schemes and free software? I'm only able to describe my views about the license used for GIMP. There are more Free Software licenses around, but I do not know their specifics well enough to speculate about them. I expect that the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL), the license used to distribute GIMP, will be around for years or decades. It will evolve to accommodate to development, for example new distribution methods. This evolution must take the spirit of previous versions into account, because deviations which would violate its core principles would make The GNU GPL covers the distributions to and the freedoms of the users, and prevents restrictions of usage. Setting up subscription-based models would thus be tricky at best, even the GPL FAQ state that a subscription fee to control the use of Free software is not allowed: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#SubscriptionFee The GNU GPL makes it possible, however, to run software on your own servers and provide access to it, without distributing the software itself. Right now, there are few SaaS models based on GIMP, http://www.flamingtext.com/Effects-Logos is the only one I know of. If this will become a more prominent use case for GIMP, we might want to make sure that any user of the service has got the same rights and freedoms as if they downloaded the current GIMP - for example, access to the source code of the GIMP version running as an image processing server. -- Regards, Michael ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list
[Gimp-user] One month of Bitcoin donations for GIMP, a review
Hi, one moth ago, at the end of Libre Graphics Meetings 2003, we announced our Bitcoin address as a new donation possibility: http://www.gimp.org/donating/#bitcoin Since then, a few things have changed: - we've reordered our donations page, moved the more popular option to the top and added a small navigation menu - Jakub Steiner (jimmac) has designed a Bitcoin donation button for the main side bar - and we got donations As I wrote in the first follow-up to the announcement, it is quite easy to tell how much we got so far - go to either of http://blockchain.info/address/1NVMCeoBfTAJQ1qwX2Dx1C8zkcRCQWwHBq https://blockexplorer.com/address/1NVMCeoBfTAJQ1qwX2Dx1C8zkcRCQWwHBq and you'll discover that we got exactly 6.8347141 BTC. Both sites will also tell you that none of this has been spent yet. In our case, this would mean that the money would be transferred to the GNOME bank account (the one of the wire transfer donation option). Now, why is that? Are the GIMP developers speculating that the exchange rates will get much better again, and try to exchange to e.g. US dollars at the best possible rate? That's tempting, I guess - the maximum total value I remember was around USD 940 instead of the current USD 780. The actual reason is a bit more mundane, and it is one part inconvenience and one part hope for innovation: 1. Inconvenience I could certainly got about the transfer as follows: Sell the coins at an exchange, get the revenue transferred to my account, then wire the money to the GNOME account. Adds delays, manual steps, fees and is a last millennium method to transfer funds collected via an innovative currency transfer system. Bah 2. Hope for Innovation GNOME, who are handling the funds for GIMP, are currently accepting donations via PayPal, wire transfer and cheque only. Transferring the monthly amount from Flattr to that PayPal account is easy, but I'm wary to try the same with Bitcoin - read too many stories about PayPal suspensions when the accounts are involved with BTC trading. So, what I did was to ask GNOME if they'd consider to use one of the US-based Bitcoin payment handlers, namely https://coinbase.com/merchants or https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-for-charities If they'd set up an account there, donating BTC would be just like any of the other options for all parties involved, conversion to fiat money* included. Unfortunately, this is still necessary, as most of the expenses - travel, accommodation for e.g. LGM attendees - can't be done in Bitcoin yet. Karen Sandler, executive director of the GNOME Foundation, has told me that they are looking into it. P.S. this announcement coincidences with an incident that could be the first serious move of a government agency against Bitcoin - the Department of Homeland Security has issued a court order, preventing Dwolla to transfer funds to and from the company behind one of the larger BTC exchanged, MtGox. I'm curious to see how this is going to evolve... https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130515/08141123095/homeland-securitys-ice-group-cuts-off-dwolla-bitcoin-transfers.shtml -- Regards Thanks for the donations, Michael ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list

Von: Joseph A. Nagy, Jr jnagyjr1...@gmail.com To my aged and somewhat failing recoginition, gimp has *always* loaded/queried it's plugins and extensions when starting, irrespective of platform. GIMP queries for plugins at startup, I just upgraded to 2.8.6 but have yet to run it, though I'm expecting that normal behavior yet again. Yes, it does that. But in order to avoid querying plug-ins that haven't changed, their modification time is compared to the cached values. Then you may be seeing the same or a similar bug on your platform. You didn't really specify how long that delay is, though. I don't really see it as buggy. It doesn't matter whether you see something as a bug for it to be one. If there is something missing it will only be known by rescanning the folders time-and-again. If it is missing, then it will be added (remember my comment about the caching based on the file modification time?). If a plug-in was there previously and has been changed, its query() procedure will be run again. See http://www.gimp.org/docs/plug-in/sect-essentials.html for a more detailed description of a plug-in's key procedures. So there's no need for GIMP to re-query plug-ins all the time.
