Those instructions are just for PCs on the same network.

For remote access across the internet teamviewer, logmein, or similar is
what you'll need.

If you want to get all fancy you could go with setting up VPN between PCs
using something like hamachi.

Not "out of the box" - but Google Duo is available on the iOS store. So, it

I just cloned the M.2.

I did not try to wipe and reinstall on the old one. That would be a long term
task to get everything back the way that I wanted it. But, It may be something
I try in the future.

But, as of today, there have been no lockups.

So when you replaced the M.2 did you clone the install, or start fresh?

Wonder if it's not the physical M.2 SSD, but maybe the install of the OS/files
on it...

Did you try wiping the old M.2 SSD before replacing it?

Curious if it turns out to be a SW or HW issue-I think you isolated it down to
the M.2 clearly, but not sure it's been identified as either SW or HW on the
M.2 as a result, right?

Thank you all for the responses.

I went to whatsmyip.com on both the host and the VM and both returned the
same IP address. So I think I am good.

Remember that I am running VMWare Workstation. Not the same as a regular
VMWare host.

If you're running the VPN on the host, it's unlikely that the guest would be
using the VPN. For that to work (absent some magic in NordVPN), your VMware
network as presented to the guest would need to be bound to the VPN virtual
network adapter, if NordVPN even uses one.

Use an IP lookup tool to confirm, but my expectation would be that you will
need to establish a VPN from within any guests you want running behind the
VPN in addition to the host.

I have the same issue with VLC player.

First time the delay is about 15 seconds, next run is without delay.

After checking in the task manager (Details) I found out the cause:

MsMpEngCP.exe and MsMpEng.exe

They perform full control of the running program but only the first time.

Maybe it will help you.

Re: [H] Weird PC issue

2020-11-03 Thread Bobby Heid
Yes, it was good info.

Latest update. I swapped the 5TB HDD out for a new 6TB HDD. No changes. I
guess now I have lots more storage. 

Could this issue be with one of the SSDs? The Samsung Magician software says
those are ok.

Here is an odd thing that I noticed. Sometimes, when using my video editing
software (VideoReDo TVSuite V6), I noticed when I do something that causes the
app to open up the standard open file dialog, there can be a delay of between 5
and 20 seconds before the dialog window opens. Other times, it opens almost
instantly. This kind of led me to believe that it may have been the HDD
causing my issues. I would open a file from the HDD and set its output to the
non-NVME SSD.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Bobby

Those were good recommendations from Joshua, never seen that info before.
The drive I pulled passed every test, but had long pauses during some of them.
I basically swapped everything that could be swapped during testing except my
m2 SSD's, and when I swapped the 4TB seagate drive all the problems went away.
Hopefully you luck out and find the culprit too.

Thanks Joshua.

I ran all of those except for the performance monitoring one and all said OK.
An interesting note - some of those tests do not show the NVME SSD (Samsung 960
Pro SSD).

I did buy a new 6TB HD to swap out for the 5TB one to see if that may help.

Thanks. Could be on to something there. I will pursue looking at testing the
drive.

The locking up can happen whether it is recording or not. I was trying to
demonstrate that I did not think processes were executing while it appeared
locked up.

Strangely enough my bad drive passed chkdsk multiple times without one fail, so
pulling it was a last ditch effect since I'd already swapped video card, RAM

[H] Weird PC issue

2020-10-09 Thread Bobby Heid
Hi,

I have had some issues going on with my pc for several months now.

There are two issues.

1. Once every several weeks or so, I get a bluescreen -
IPI_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. I can live with this one. Things that I have tried
to fix this do not seem to have helped.
2. The big issue is that my PC keeps locking up. This happens from 0-5
times per day. I may go 3 days without it happening and then have it happen
3 times in one day. Here are some details:

a. When it locks up, the HD activity light is doing a very fast, steady
flash.
b. There is no warning when it will happen.
c. It happens whether I am using the PC or not.
d. Seems to happen more often overnight than during the day. But not
always.
e. When it locks up, I can still move the mouse cursor and move
windows. I cannot close a window or start another program.
f. When it locks up when not using PC, sometimes the login screen image
will show, sometimes not.
g. CTL-Alt-Delete does nothing when locked.
h. PC stays up 24/7. No sleep or hibernation.
i. When it locks up, if the system is recording a show (from a
networked TV Tuner), the recording stops, so I assume that most apps are not
still running when it locks up.
j. If a recording was scheduled while it is locked up, nothing is
created.
k. To reset, I have to press and hold the power button until the system
turns off.
l. Through trial and error, it seems that turning off letting the
monitors going to sleep seems to have lessened the frequency of the lock
ups. I am not sure if this was not just a coincidence.

Here are my system specs:

*   Asus X99 Deluxe-II MB
* Intel i7-6850k CPU (not overclocked)
*   Asus GeForce GTX 1070
*   Corsair water cooler
*   Corsair 32GB RAM
*   Samsung 960 Pro SSD (512GB) - OS
*   Samsung 860 EVO SSD 1TB
*   WD 5TB Black
*   Pioneer Blu Ray drive
*   Dual monitors
*   Corsair HX-850 PSU
*   Corsair K70 LUX keyboard
*   Logitech MX Master mouse
*   Windows 10 Pro - 2004 - 19041.508

I am not too keen on a nuke and install. It would take me forever to get
everything back the way it was. But I am not ruling that out.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: [H] iRobot Roomba

2017-11-28 Thread Bobby Heid
We have the Roomba 980. Have had it for about 6-7 months now. We are
liking it pretty well. We have a mix of hardwood/rugs/carpet/tile. It does
well on all of the floor types. We have almost 2700 square feet and it
takes it all day to cover everything. That is with the wall setting on (it
goes along the walls also). Not the quietest device though.

It is fun to watch. I catch myself following it around some times to see
how it figures out various obstacles.

Thanks,
Bobby

[H] Wireless routers...

2017-06-20 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

Time to start looking to upgrade my network.

What are your thoughts on the new Norton router. I kind of like the network
appliance aspect. It seems to be on par with the Netgear X4S, specs-wise.
Norton has a preorder special of $179 with a free year of updates for
network protection. I think it is $10/month after that.

https://us.norton.com/core

I am also looking at the Netgear X4s

But the mesh networking gear seems pretty neat too. House is not large,
about 2600 square feet.

Thanks,

[H] DVI KVM switch?

2017-04-30 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

I recently built a new PC. I reused my dual monitors by buying display port
to DVI cables. I still have my old PC running with Windows 7 so that I can
still record shows with WMC using my external tuner. I access the old
machine via remote desktop which is fine for everything except WMC. WMC
will crash if I try to use it via remote desktop. I am using an Xbox 360 to
view stuff recorded onto the old PC, but that interface (remote) is clunky.

My question to you all is, what kind of solution could I have where I can
use the two monitors with the main pc and use one of the two monitors on a
KVM switch or something to switch back and forth between the new pc and the
old one.

Also would prefer a solution less than $100.

Thanks,

Bobby

I've become a big fan of G.Skill memory kits, especially for DDR4. However,
I've had problems getting my HW-E (5820k) and BW-E (6950X) to run at high
frequencies, like 3200MT/s. The same kits work fine in my Z170 boards with
Skylake chips, so I know it's not the modules. I've instead opted to use low
latency 2400MT/s memory--in this case, 4x8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 2400
C10. I don't think it really matters either way, but I'm happy with the result
so far. Just something to keep in mind when picking your memory kit.

One of the big recent advancements is in the new M.2 interface for SSDs, which
finally creates an interface that can match the inherent speed of modern SSD:

with this update (from https://kb.acronis.com/content/56196):

Acronis True Image 2015

Acronis has released new build 6613 which supports Windows 10. Update your
Acronis True Image (see this article for detailed instructions on updating;
here is how to view which build is currently installed on your machine). The
update is available for Acronis True Image 2015 and Acronis True Image
Unlimited users free of charge.

So maybe check your build number?

Not sure if it being a PCIE drive with 2015 has anything to do with it or
not as I read where others do not have problems with the 2016 version.

Thanks,

Bobby

That is actually a page describing how to uninstall Connect. I did

OK. 6hrs of googling 'How to deactivate Windows' ended with failure.
So I put my 64bit W8.1 PRO DVD in the reader and launched it. Yes,
it did warn me, but it did format my SSD again (finally!). And, the

continued to install W8.1 PRO,or, so I thought. I thought I
might get

let me
optout, say NO!, bypass, etc. I do not care what benefits M$ may offer.
I do not

The PC is now fully down. I may try and install W7

If you run 8.1 from the desktop which is now easy to do (and get the 8.1

That said, it also has it's failings. The 2 versions of IE are stupid.

On balance, I have to say my daughter uses 8.1 from the touch screen

It seems to run very stable, if still very confusing to me atm. I will
 get over this, thank you.
Yes, I did also activate this install; so I believe that M$ now knows

Fine. I also know that I can not re-use my DVDs again EXCEPT to re-load
the same OS to the PC it lives on

 M$. Fine.
I am licensed to use the M$ code from the DVDs and any follow on support

Does M$ have a 'De-Activation process' should I decide to install this
W8.1 code on a different PC that I own?

No, I have no plan to sell my W8.1 (full version 32/64) to anyone else.

Thank you for any comments/suggestions you choose to share.

Subject: [H] Three Monitor Mania!

Several years ago I purchased a HIS H675F1GD Radeon HD 6750 1GB 128-Bit
GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with
Eyefinity. At the time, I was just running two monitors off the HDMI and DVI
ports. I recently wanted to add our HDTV to the mix, but the 3rd port is a
DisplayPort. As a short cut, I added a second video card (a Radeon, but of a
different version). Things worked but later I noticed that the Catalyst
software was not working and I could not upgrade the drivers. I assumed it
was because of the two different Radeon versions.

So I went in search of a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter cable. Found it was not
easy or straight forward. There were active and passive converters. Some
worked for some people, other people felt Eyefinity was a disaster and
running three monitors (where one of them WAS NOT a DisplayPort equipped
monitor) was not possible. I took a chance and purchased an Active
converter. It arrived and, of course, it DID NOT work.

So, I seem to have four options: 1) Purchase a new monitor (too expensive
and I already have the monitor), 2) Purchase another HD 6750 video card
(which don't seem to be easily available - being old), 3) purchase a new
video card that DOES do 3 monitors, NONE of which is a DisplayPort Monitor,
or 4) Purchase 2 identical new cards.

So, I am looking for firsthand experience with people who have successfully
run a setup with 3 or more monitors (with DVI or HDMI inputs). When you read
the forums you see lots of people saying I heard it CAN be done, but few
that have actually accomplished the task. I read that there are nVidia cards
that can do 4 monitors (but only 3 in a surround environment and the 4th
as a ???). So, suggestions?

I appreciate the input and suggestions. This has been such a frustration
experience for what should be a simple task.

Hi Duncan,

I have a Synology DS412+ NAS with 2-3TB WD Red drives in it. I do not use
it as a DHCP server. I have the two NICs in the NAS set to a particular IP
address. I was not sure if it would use both NICs without link aggregation
and it seems to only actively use the one Nic for I/O. But it does show the
other as active. I do enable the windows file service on the NAS, but not
WINS. I also let it send email alerts, but it has only sent a couple of
emails.

I will be watching to see if this happens again.

Over the past 4yrs, I have learned to never let a Nas run a DHCP server
(router only when necessary), never let a NAS run a WINS server, pay
close attention to letting your Nas send you 'alerts' vial email.
Any/all of these
can/will screw up your LAN (confuse your router!). My Nas units operate
'dumb' on my LAN.
Just a thought.

You need a signal booster. The way they work is that you run a
coaxial cable out to an antenna that is about 12 inches by one inch
diameter that is located somewhere, in the attic, on the roof,
outside ... where ever... a spot that does receive a strong single.
Then they broadcast that signal in an area where there is no signal.
Price will depend on the range of the broadcast circle. I live in a
dead zone and use this one...works good. It is over your budget, I
paid almost 300 for it in 2008 because it is for an office facility
so it has a huge range and covers all cell phone band widths.

[H] Ailing HD on laptop

2013-09-02 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

I was working on this lady's laptop. Running the Dell diagnostics, it said
the drive was failing (something about interrupts not serviced or something
like that).

So I create a Ghost image of the drive. Ghost said it successfully created
the image. I restored the image and after playing around a bit and running
startup repair off of a Vista disc, I got the laptop to boot ok.

Now, I am unable to run windows update. Part of the error message says
something like windows update cannot currently check for updates because the
service is not running.

I have tried some of following things:

1) Restarted the windows update and bits services

2) Turned windows update off and then back on

3) Emptied the c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder

Looking in the event logs, I see a lot of CAPI2 ESENT error -583 errors.
The actual error is The Cryptographic Services service failed to initialize
the catalog database. The ESENT error was: --583

Some of what I have found implies that the issue may be with the Intel
Storage drivers since I restored the image onto a new HD. I tried
installing the Intel drivers from the Dell website, but it says that I the
latest drivers.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I might do to fix this?

Thanks,

Bobby

Re: [H] Ailing HD on laptop - SOLVED

2013-09-02 Thread Bobby Heid
I kept messing around with it and finally found an Intel Storage driver
update on Intel's site. Unfortunately, it brought stuff to a crawl. So I
went into safe mode and uninstalled the new driver. Once I went back into
regular mode, it updated the storage drivers (from windows) and all of a
sudden, no event log errors! Now windows update is working.

So after all, it was the Intel storage drivers that didn't like me restoring
the OS image to a new drive for some reason.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future.

My new build client would not move dot-net forward from the initial

install the v1.1 sp1 patch also. Odd.
But, I suspect that MS wished me to be somewhere else. Humorous how this

Most confusing to me during this fal-der-al, this XP client was never

Joe/Bobby/Rick/Scott,
We can close this thread. I'll figure something out.

I understand. Yes, I started using a program that needed dot-net 2 years
ago. Probably still use, but can not recall which ATM. Could be Mozilla
TBird, Intuit, Nolo, Bond Wizard, or, some subtle change my online
banking software implemented in a major update years back. Sorry. Stuff
happens. LOL!

I asked here and was convinced to just start using dot.net. I have seen
no negative behavior since. I started at v1.1. I seem to be at v3.x sp1
now on my main office client.

The newest version 4.x does not work with XP. Fine. No issue. I am
completing a new build of XP on what has turned out to be a very
challenging set of hdw. Years back I researched dot-net via MS KB's. I
was lead to believe I DID NOT have to re-install all the previous
versions of dot-net to come current; that all new versions contained all
the necessary links and bits of the old version. OK. That makes sense.
It just does not seem to work... Fails to install ATM.

Summary: I'll just reload v1.1 base and wait for MS to decide what else
is necessary!
Thanks,
Duncan

[H] Win XP stop error D1

2010-06-02 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

A neighbor's pc (Gateway 500SE) was showing SMART errors so I suggested that
we replace the HD with a new one. It turns out they had a 40GB HD in it and
I got a 500GB HD to replace it with, I ghosted the old drive and restored
the image to the new drive. I then put the new drive in and booted up. I
get a blue screen with a D1 error (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

In looking around in the BIOS, I saw that the BIOS could only see 137GB max
of the HD. SO I made 4 partitions and restored the image to the C:
partition and rebooted. Still the same D1 stop error.

So I then upgrade the BIOS (this machine is about 8 years old and I'm sure
it had the BIOS that shipped with it) to the latest version. The BIOS can
now see all 500GB on the HD. But I am still getting the D1 blue screeb.

The full stop code line is 0x00D1 (0x0ECD2F95, 0x0002, 0x0002,
0x83A5ED20)

Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to fix it?

Thanks,

Bobby

It maps into the address space of whatever the 64-bit address space is (8
terabytes or something like that). When you have a 32-bit OS, the address
space is only 4GB, the system maps in the hardware memory (BIOS, graphics
card RAM, etc.) space from the top of the address space down. That is why
you get between about 3-3.5GB of actual RAM when you have 4GB RAM on a
32-bit system. I know I'm not explaining this well, so take a look here:

Re: [H] Weird PC problem. - update

2010-01-17 Thread Bobby Heid
Me again. I just got the system from the woman tonight. One thing, it was
DUSTY! After blowing out the system, I powered it up. What happens is that
when going in to non-safe mode, after the loading XP window, the screen
blanks for about 10 seconds, then the signal to the monitor cuts off. After
another 10-15 seconds, the system reboots.

It will boot into safe mode ok. In safe mode, I modified it so that it will
not reboot on a blue screen. When I am in safe mode, I cannot view any
events in the event viewer and the device manager shows nothing. Any ideas?

It does blue screen now with a message something like: error seems to be
caused by the following file: nv4_disp. I am researching this error now.
Seems to be sort of common.

The stop code in case anyone is interested is:
0x00EA (0x870F8908, 0x86DCA108, 0xF7AD0CBC, 0x0001)

I have yet to scan the drive, but that is in the works.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Bobby

I doubt that's an infection nor a result of a password bypass unless
it wasn't obtained from a credible source.

I would think this is a driver issue esp where everything is fine in
safe mode. Have you tried having them reload the drivers for the video

findings.

Stan,

I do some gaming. Mostly single player Call of Duty and games like that. I
do run fold...@home and s...@home. I was using the GPU for Seti, but it put
out way too much heat. Basically, when I was building the system, I was
trying to get the most I could that I wanted to pay for. That way, I don't
have to spend more and upgrade the GPU in a couple of years.

My memory gives me a 7.8 with 6GB of Corsair Dominators.

Graphics and gaming graphics are both 7.1 which is not bad.
Unfortunately, I don't remember what the old 4850 was so can't compare
the two. If you're looking for a 7.7 you'll need to step up to the 5850
or 5870 but what's the point if you never game. Might as well stay with
what you have.

I would first try to see if it could be some sort of
virus/Trojan/spyware/etc first. Scan the system for them. I'd do this as an
external drive on another working known system.

If nothing is found then look at the Video Drivers. Reinstall the video
drivers. If this does not work it could be the video card is giving up the

I've seen this before and it was the Video Drivers in my situation. But,
Virus Scan first.

It is supposed to pass certain tests to be rated Cat 6. One good place is
www.monoprice.com. I think that any of the plenum cables are fine for
in-wall.

I have heard the same - that solid wire is good for wiring point-to-point
where it will not be moved and that stranded is best for patch cables and
there the cables will be moved a lot.

[H] VMware workstation 7 performance.

2009-11-16 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey everyone,

I just updated my VMware workstation 6.x to version 7.0. Part of the reason
was Windows 7 support, the other was that it was supposed to support
graphics much better in 7.0.

Well, before performed a P2V (physical-to-virtual) conversion of my desktop
(Vista Ultimate 64), I had scores of 5.9 across the board for everything (I
think that is the highest you can go, score wise in Vista).

After the conversion (workstation 6.x), I still had 5.9 on all except the
graphics. One of the graphics scores was 1.9 (I think that was for the
business graphics). The 3d graphics score was a measly 1.0. Even stuff
like solitaire and spider solitaire sucked in the VM .

After converting to workstation 7.0, using the same VM as above, all of my
scores are back at 5.9! Too cool. I have not really done any testing (and
probably won't), but the above mentioned games are really smooth now.

Subject: [H] Recovering an Admin Password in Vista

Short version: My last child in the house, my last son, has a Vista
install that my wife 'wisely' decided to place an admin password on and
then promptly forgot it. Now the only account that we know the password
to, my son's, is locked down and we can't install anything. Is there
any way, other than a reinstall, to recover or change the admin password?

ThanksSteve

I know you can have it check multiple accounts and have the emails come to
the inbox (or wherever you want them to go). I do not know about the
appointment stuff though.

Getting lots of pop-ups to update to WMP11.

Opinions sought about WMP11?

Hey,

What do you all think about this for $50 (normally $200)? I used to have a

Hi Duncan,

SAM stands for Security Accounts Manager. It is part of the OS. It is
where the user and password hash info is stored.

I got this link from my older Brother some days ago. Thought I'd share
here, since we discuss digital TV's often.

http://www.screenmath.com/

Yes, I now shop for a new TV. My big Pioneer Elite PRO-98 55in RPJ has
died. I may be able to fix it, but the part costs ~$450. Even post-fix,
this TV is still analog only! Time to move on.. :)

I am focused on 55-60-ish inch to start based on the above link's logic.
Brand opinions are welcome. Looking at Samsung to start. I have viewed
the Pioneer Elite offers. They appear to be all plasma. I do not believe
I can live with plasma due to my living-room's ambient light problem.
Yes, my first impression based of what has been shared here in the past
4 years.
Best,
Duncan

Hello Bobby,

Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 9:42:26 PM, you wrote:

CTRL-ALT-DEL and it brings up the login prompt with a user name (but of
course she does not know the password for that user).

The admin account is probably open, type in administrator and use
that. Once there get to users CP applet. Reset passwords , write down
user names. I prefer the old style login box prompt myself. I forgot
how you revert back to the clicky style but it's in there OR thru the
admin tools / pol edit / etc
