Re: [H] G Suite Legacy Migration

2022-03-04 Thread Christopher Fisk
I'm still in a holding pattern as well. I have heard that you can migrate
your google voice stuff to a regular free google voice account gmail
account.

I may transfer my stuff to the office 365 family thing which is $100/year.
Will get me the 6 users I need, but I'm not looking forward to the process.

[H] G Suite Legacy Migration

2022-01-24 Thread Christopher Fisk
Anyone else have a Legacy G Suite account they were being spoiled with the
"We'll never charge you for this as long as it's a service" that is now
being forced to upgrade to a pay service?

I'm going through trying to decide what my best option is for migration
away for email and calendar. (Everything else I use will continue to work
on the new free subscription service level).

Options:

   - Microsoft 365 Family (Doesn't allow alternate email addresses -- would
lose some of my alternate emails I signed up for things on) ($100/year for
   family plan)
   - Google Account & a VPS which forwards email for my domain to it ($5/mo
or so and I would need to manage it)
   - Just pay for what I use currently ($30/mo worth of email accounts
   $360/year)
   - Just run a server at home (no static IP -- pretty much a non-starter
   there)

Ugh, no amazing options. Maybe more options will show themselves soon.

Those instructions are just for PCs on the same network.

For remote access across the internet teamviewer, logmein, or similar is
what you'll need.

If you want to get all fancy you could go with setting up VPN between PCs

Windows 10 is insanely good about swapping hardware now. Just today I
imaged a drive from an old Second Generation core i3 to an 11th gen i5
without issue, it downloaded drivers for the motherboard and was ready to
go.

As was said, some programs you may need to go through the process of
reapplying licenses, but it depends on the app.

I believe the google 1 app will do what you want through your google

Re: [H] Tracking possible rogue DNS?

If you're just looking to get arp info you could always set your IP Address
temporarily on that range to see if they are truly local devices (and thus
able to retrieve their arp.)

You can run wireshark on your PC and see what traffic is going to/from.
The 193.27.228.0 network is registered to a Datacenter in Russia:

Re: [H] SSH in Windows 10 PRO

2020-12-15 Thread Christopher Fisk
An unwired UAP will talk to any other UAP it can see (unless you force it
to talk to a specific one). That means a wireless can talk to another
wireless. Or it can talk to a wired.

If a UAP is wired, it just uses that wired connection for it's connection.

I use the Unify devices at work, they get internet access out to the lifts
and some go multiple hops to do so. Admittedly there is very little
traffic (scanning barcodes), but it works. I anticipate it should work as
long as you have signal there.

Thanks!

Re: [H] SSH in Windows 10 PRO

2020-12-13 Thread Christopher Fisk
You'll want to reset the unifi.

I've encountered this in the past. If you have a unifi device that is too
old your management server won't be able to send the latest firmware or
adopt it. The fix is to reset the thing to factory defaults and then do
the manual firmware update. It's annoying, but not really that difficult.

Re: [H] Blocking YouTube?

2020-11-18 Thread Christopher Fisk
I completely get the point. OP asked how and I knowing that a question like
that has to be triggered, asked why.

If you read beyond the first sentence you'd see I told him HOW to do it as
well in the first post.

Doing it through pi-hole is a possibility, but what happens when they
install a VPN on their computer or phone and connect to a VPN that listens
on port 80 somewhere on the web and proxy's past your pi-hole?

Re: [H] Blocking YouTube?

2020-11-18 Thread Christopher Fisk
" I have the same issue with my daughter and she stays up half the night on
YouTube."

Well, that's your problem. Your problem isn't youtube, it's your daughter
staying up late! ( xyproblem.info )

Use a router with access controls and disable access for her MAC addresses
after bed time.

That way your internet works fine, you don't have to do things that she can
work her way around. Your router just doesn't let her machines connect to
the internet during that time.

DD-WRT has support for this built in:
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Parental_control

Is that more of what you're looking for?

Re: [H] Blocking YouTube?

2020-11-18 Thread Christopher Fisk
Can I ask WHY you're looking to do this? Is the kid just not following
the rules? Taking away the device they're using to circumvent the rules
seems like the right thing to do to me.

This isn't a simple problem. Removing just access to youtube for someone
with computer skills and determination to get it will be almost impossible
without really tightening down things.

   1. Remove admin rights from the teenager's PC for their user account
   2. Remove the ability to boot from anything except the installed HDD (to
prevent creation of admin account through tools or running linux from
   livecd)
   1. Set a BIOS password after configuring the boot sequence
  2. Teen might be able to reset password, so seal the computer case so
  jumpers can't be touched
  3. Setup Chrome and all other browsers in locked down mode using
either kiosk mode for the browser, or GPO
  1. the GPO should set a web proxy server to a machine running squid
or other proxy software so you can block youtube there, as well as track
what they're doing to circumvent the block
   4. Setup the PC so they can't run anything that isn't on the whitelist
of applications (so they don't download a standalone version of
firefox/chrome and get around your lockdowns)
  1. (This is insanely time consuming and will run into issues when
you're trying to update the computer)

In a business environment you can do the majority of this and centrally
maintain things and it's a full time job. Doing it at home? That seems
insane.

Non-admin rights, locked down profile, not being able to install software
and not being able to change the browser settings will get the majority.

A caveat on the second one: The second one is M.2 SATA, not NVMe, so you
may just want the first one to say the $3.

Re: [H] Asus P9X79 WS and Gen3 PCIe

2020-10-26 Thread Christopher Fisk
Your motherboard supports PCIe 3.0, so that is good, you will need to use
either first or second PCIe slot (I suggest the second slot which is an x16
slot that gets limited to x8 when something in the the first slot, use the
first slot for your video card)

You will also need to purchase an NVMe adaptor.

Something like:
https://www.amazon.com/YATENG-Controller-Expansion-Card-Support-Converter/dp/B07JJTVGZM
or:
https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-advanced-solution-Controller-Expansion/dp/B07JKH5VTL

The second one allows you to throw in a second one in the future.

You can search for other adaptors if you like, those looked fine from my
very quick research though.

Re: [H] My second Ubiquiti Networks Unifi 802.11ac Dual-Radio PRO Access Point

2020-10-05 Thread Christopher Fisk
No. You need to use the Unifi Controller software to adopt the new Unifi
on to the existing network.

You do this by plugging into your normal network.

2020-10-05 Thread Christopher Fisk
When you launch the Unifi controller software you can adopt the new
controller. You'll need to have it connected through ethernet when you do
that.

Once the device is adopted and provisioned you can unplug it and use the
wireless uplink.

Good luck! I love these devices, I use them all over the place at work.

Don't kill yourself over it. There are news ones on Amazon for $40. I've
been looking at this 1" stuff and it seems to be 1" type B or 1" type C
based on the information on the tape.

I can't see us getting a machine to convert this stuff. I did find
someplace offering $110 per reel to convert to digital.

I'll have to see what marketing wants to do!

The reel to reel stuff is all 1 inch and was converted from previous stuff

Does the video USB capture device work on Windows 10? If so I'd love to

2020-08-04 Thread Christopher Fisk
Hey folks,

We have a collection of Slides, Printed Photos, Videos on Reels and Videos
on VHS we'd like to convert to digital. Anyone here have hardware that
would handle that?

You have a service you know of that you've used?
Would you let us rent the hardware?
Would you want to give a quote to do the conversion?

I'm still gathering information on the numbers of the various things.

[H] 1440p or 4k for gaming?

2020-06-05 Thread Christopher Fisk
What do you guys run for your gaming setups? I'm currently on a ~5 year
old system (6700k & Geforce 970) and my daughter is looking to get a gaming
PC. I'm considering giving her my current setup (She plays minecraft
mostly) and going with something new for myself.

I'm leaning heavily towards 1440p due to the price on good 4k gaming
monitors, then in the future once monitor pricing (hopefully) comes down I
can just add 4k to it.

Thoughts?

Re: [H] Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC PRO 802.11ac

2020-03-25 Thread Christopher Fisk
Wireless uplink on the Unifi Devices is an interesting beast. It's very
nice for being able to get wifi where you wouldn't be able to normally
(think outside way across the lawn), but the cost is that each pocket you
send is re-sent however many jumps, using available wireless bandwidth.

If you have 50mb internet bandwidth and you're using the UniFi AP AC PRO
with 1300mb max speed on 5GHz, you'll not really see any bandwidth
degradation unless you end up with a string of Unifi Devices so long it's
just silly.

If you have a 1gb internet bandwidth, you'll see some degradation in speed
after way fewer hops.

The above assumes your 5GHz spectrum is not already congested. If you've
in an apartment building you'll want to do as much as possible to stop the
congestion, if you're in a house and can't see anything except your own
wifi, then feel free to use wireless uplink.

Re: [H] Chris Network Solutions

2020-02-21 Thread Christopher Fisk
They do massive lock in and cost too much. When I was with the MSP we had
customers on network solutions we were planning on moving. Well, network
solutions saw that the domains were expiring in less than 30 days so they
put domain lock on the domain, we couldn't move the domains so we had to
renew through network solutions, wait for the domain lock to expire then
move. Slimy crap like that.

Here is a search on network solutions on the SysAdmin Subreddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/search?q=%22network+solutions%22_sr=on_over_18=on=new=all

Examples:
https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/dtbc63/network_solutions_is_shady/
"I've always had trouble transferring domains away from NetworkSolutions
but it seems to have gotten even worse. Last week submitted transfer lock
changes / request auth codes. Three screens for each goddamn domain with
surveys/checkboxes/confirmations etc - I"m used to that song and dance,
whatevever. Says I'll get my auth codes in 3 days. Six days later, I get
the codes, go to transfer my domains and they all fail saying domains are
locked. Go back in to netowrk solutions, all the transfer locks are turned
back on. Fucking A. try to call and get a number disconnected/cannot be
completed as dialed, get into a chat session and they say i have to call,
give me web.com's main number. 25 minutes of hold time later the domains
are unlocked.

Anyone else deal with this bullshit lately? With Godaddy you literally turn
off the lock with 2 clicks, and you can view the code instantly. None of
this survey/waiting period shit."

Looking at the domain in the NS portal, there was no configuration done on
the domain (no web forwarding or DNS servers).

I'm thinking Network Solutions quietly tacked this domain onto our account
hoping that whoever was tasked with renewing domains wouldn't know that we
hadn't ordered it in the first place.

It is possible that one of the three of us here who have access to the NS
account purchased the .info domain, but no one remembers it, and we would
have had no reason to register it.

It is also possible that we could have accidentally registered it somehow
when registering the .com version of the domain."

domain is not .site top level domain. Immediately I logged in and checked
to see if it was a phishing email... Sadly, I did have a .site domain name
on my Network Solutions account. The invoice was for $0.00 and no note was
on the invoice.

I called Network Solutions immediately and they told me that this was a
"gift" that they give out to people from time to time. They said it does
not auto renew. I asked if I should have received an email letting me know
about this free gift. She said no, it's just a free gift . (BE GRATEFUL
PEASANT!)

I am so fucking sick of Network Solutions. They have lost all credibility
(not that they had much left) in my book. Just making this post to see if
anyone else has had this happen."

They have terrible customer service, they add things to your account and
hope you auto-renew, the service they do provide isn't that great and I
could care less if the whole company folded today.

Virtualbox will enable the microphone on your machine if any of the VMs you
have created have audio enabled. To prevent it from occurring you need to
disable all audio on all VMs on your virtualbox setup. Just checking the

Since you're using outlook 2019 can't you just add your google account
using the built in settings from microsoft instead of the sync program?

Add new account -> Type in email address -> click advanced options -> click
let me set up my account manually -> click Connect -> Select Google

This will allow you to login to your gsuite email using the built in
support for google accounts in Outlook 2019.

Thanks!

Re: [H] Two wifi extenders different | or same SSD

2019-10-03 Thread Christopher Fisk
The Unifi Devices can be setup in repeater mode. When you adopt them they
need to be wired, but once adopted they will work as long as you can get
them power and they have signal to the other unifi devices. This is
Wireless Uplink and it's supported on the majority of the Unifi Devices out
there:

https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002262328-UniFi-UAP-Configuring-Wireless-Uplink

In the controller they show as connected wirelessly.

Re: [H] Two wifi extenders different | or same SSD

2019-10-02 Thread Christopher Fisk
Best case you'd be Unifi across the board and allow them to handle the
roaming handoff. When you have different brands of APs you can use the
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/05546/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html
Wifi Roaming Aggressiveness (or equivalent for your vendor). With 3 APs
you should set one each on channels 1 6 and 11 so there is minimal overlap.

To answer your SSID question, you'll want to have the same SSID, otherwise
your clients will connect for as long as possible to a weaker signal until
it becomes unusable and it then tries other SSIDs.

Good luck!

Re: [H] Removing primary Exchange account from Outlook 2019?

2019-08-21 Thread Christopher Fisk
Creating a new profile is easy enough. bring up the run window and type
"outlook /manageprofiles"

Then create a new profile and import all your stuff.

You can also edit the profile settings from there, you might find there is
more than one mail account setup, or it's trying to read a second mailbox
that was shared with you.

Good luck!

I went the opposite way a bit back. I had a motherboard with 8 SATA & 2
NVMe, so I went ahead and threw together a storage spaces setup with 8
Spinning drives to complement my NVMe boot drive. it's still pretty much
overkill for anything though.

So just venting a bit. Had a coworker skip the whole "back up the
customer's user profile" on an NVMe drive prior to doing a system recovery,
so now I get to see what I can recover from this drive.

We don't have any M.2 NVMe adaptors here at the office, so at least I get
to work from home today.

Anyone have recommendations for data recovery tools I can try. I'm going
to create an image file, so something that can read from an image file
would be best.

Your method would work. I suggest checking to see if the router supports
DD-WRT and installing a version of that. It will generally allow you to

The SFP port would be used with a module that plugs in. Often used for
Fiber Transceivers, you'll likely not use the port.

Correct, you'll only have 3 other ports once X0 is setup as the WAN port.

Once you configure the EdgeMax you'll just swap over the cables. I'd make
sure the internal network is setup the same as on the Trend Net.

Re: [H] Ubiquiti EdgeMax SFP router

That is a nice little router, I've installed that very model at one of our
customer's homes. When you configure the router you're going to assign an
X# port to the WAN (generally X0) and you will plug your cable modem
there. I've done a bit of work on these devices, if you're 100% stumped on
it, let me know and I'll help you out.

For your old Trendnet router, does it support DD-WRT? Might want to look
into changing to that firmware.

The firmware on my Netgear N4300 hasn't been updated by the provider for a

Re: [H] is there a way to stop creators update

2017-07-28 Thread Christopher Fisk
*Use Microsoft’s wushowhide utility to hide the “Feature update to Windows
10, version 1703”*
The difficult part about this method is that it’ll only work once the
update shows up in your Windows Update. Since the rollout is gradual, this
could be days, weeks, or even months.

   - Go to *KB 3073930*

and download Microsoft’s Wushowhide tool. (Click the link marked “*Download
the ‘Show or hide updates’ troubleshooter package now*.”)
   - Double-click on *Wushowhide.diagcab* to run it.
   - Click the link marked *Advanced*. *Uncheck *the box marked “*Apply
   repairs automatically*.” Click *Next*.
   - Wushowhide will run for a long time. Click the link to *Hide Updates*
when it appears. If you see a checkbox marked “*Feature update to
Windows 10, version 1703*,” *check the box* next to the item and click
*Next*. (If you don’t see “Feature update to Windows 10, version 1703,”
the upgrade isn’t being sent to your box yet. Check again tomorrow.)
   - Click *Close*, and you’re done.

When you’re ready to install the Windows 10 Creators Update, just use this
same process to unhide the update from Windows Update.

Creators update has had massive issues for me when an AV other than windows
defender is installed during it's update. I've resolved it by reinstalling
& going direct to the creators update then putting AV back in (work
required... I just use windows defender at home).

No guarantees it will work for you though.

[H] Star Citizen anyone?

2016-10-14 Thread Christopher Fisk
Hey folks,

Anyone getting into the Hype for Star Citizen?

Not sure if anyone has been paying attention and/or cares, but it's the
biggest crowd funded game, at I believe 128million raised. I actually
purchased my newest computer with the mindset that I'd be using it to play
the game. The current alpha is a nice demo of the game, but the recently
released teasers for what is up and coming are pretty nice as well:
CitizenCon 2016 highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MysTnIXcc2w
Gamescon 2016 Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WMotcoO75M

I'm a huge Wing Commander Fan and back in 2012 I pledged for the $60
package, and since then have put in about $4/month towards development (I'm
$250 into pledges). (I ungraded my starter ship to a better fighter and
purchased copies for the game for both of my daughters and a friend for
Christmas.

If you have the game and you're interested in flying around in game with
me, let me know I'll be happy to do a few missions.

If you don't have the game but are interested, if you use my referral
link/code you get 5000 bonus in game money.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/enlist?referral=STAR-4RPC-TV6K

My current computer is running the game nicely.

Corei7 6700k
32GB DDR4
Samsung 950 Pro 500GB
Gigabyte G1 Gaming GA-Z170X-Gaming 7
GTX 970
Corsair RM1000 PSU

I'm actually at the point now where I see things like the 1070, etc and I'm
not even thinking of upgrade, which is a strange place to be with computers
for me.

Have fun folks,

[H] Mouse replacement

2016-07-19 Thread Christopher Fisk
Hi Folks,

My Razer Naga MMO mouse is starting to double right click when I right
click and this is causing problems in my gaming. As such I'm starting to
look at replacements. My initial thought is to replace it with a new Razer
Naga because I've enjoyed this mouse from from the moment I got it. It has
lasted 6 years, and if I weren't relying on my right clicks being 100% I'd
have no problems keep using this one (I will keep it on my non-gaming PC)

Original Mouse:
https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Laser-Gaming-Mouse-RZ01-00280100-R3/dp/B002MPPRPO
(I'm not paying the $200 the guy wants for this -- just showing what I am
trying to replace)

Direct Replacement:
https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Ergonomic-Gaming-Mouse-RZ01-01040100-R3U1/dp/B00E8CF268
This mouse has moved the 2 buttons from the top left to near the scroll
wheel, but overall the rest of the mouse looks similar in shape/layout.
Since I don't use the top left buttons due to placement and I may use the
ones under the scroll wheel, this might work out.

I'm also looking at using the Razer Naga Chroma which is the direct
evolution from the 2014 edition
https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Naga-Chroma-Professional-Programmable/dp/B01798WKTY

Anyone have ideas for a similar or better mouse? The thumb buttons are
actually quite useful for me on the various games I play allowing me to use
the num pad with my mouse hand instead of my WSAD hand.

Thanks!

Christopher Fisk

The QHD displays are quite nice, we have something similar here in my

Sent too early!!

If they require access like that and you're worried about them seeing what
is on your lan, you could make a virtual machine, lock that off on it's own
physical network with the phone and your router and let them have at it.

Frankly, if you're making other calls it's not on your end, it is on theirs
or Verizon's. How would you be successfully making other calls if it were
on your equipment? Your equipment doesn't handle any routing of calls,
just the sending of voip packets to their network, which you have proven
that you can do by calling other numbers.

Thanks!

I might be rocking the boat here, but for projector duties, I've found that
AppleTV works fantastic. For windows we use AirParrot, or on Mac's you can
natively cast to the AppleTV. You still need a PC to drive it, but it
could be as simple as someone's laptop connecting. A chromecast also works
surprisingly well, with the newer builds of chrome supporting casting your
entire desktop.

Re: [H] Linux Safe as I think?

2014-11-04 Thread Christopher Fisk
From the standpoint of attacks/etc, yes, linux is safe. Unless you get
youself into being a direct target for some reason (Running a high profile
website, etc) a machine just running linux and kept up to date with it's
patches is about as secure as you need to be. The wide net type attacks go
against the largest install base, that being windows. Kinda the low
hanging fruit of the hacking world.

For security on websites, you're using the same software as you would
otherwise use in windows. Your browser is encrypting, your network is
going across the same internet link, etc, so there is no issue with logging
into a website in linux vs windows.

So I installed Ubuntu and a number of different distros on my desktop to
find the one I wanted to use on my X41.

I decided on Elementary 0 and I like it a lot. In the discovery process I
found myself using my desktop Ubuntu VM for lots of different online and
off line expanding activities. Last night I was just about ready to log

I paused because I really don't understand Linux down to the bone marrow
like I do windows, and I am unsure if it is as safe as I think it is to use
with sensitive information... something I have yet to do.

I am not running any Linux anti virus or malware program that I am aware
of, I don't where the risks are, and goggling the issue brings up very few
returns. So is Linux as safe, out of the box, as I think it is? And what is
it about Linux and desktop security that I need to know that I am probably
 unaware of. Thanks!

I have a computer that was a rent to buy machine. It's paid for, but is
suddenly booting up (as soon as I press CTRL-ALT-DEL to login) with a
Trilock Plus screen (red screen) telling me the computer has been locked
because a virus has been detected. I don't think that's the case, but I
can't figure out what file is running to bring up the screen.

Winlogon looks normal, as does Explorer.exe. What runs that early in the
boot process? The run entries in the registry appear clean as well. I'm
assuming it's a service, but so far I'm not sure which one.

[H] Recommended Powerline equipment

2014-10-27 Thread Christopher Fisk
Hey guys,

Doing some work in a medical building and running ethernet is difficult at
best. We have 2 machines that are currently on wifi, but due to security
policy changes we're implementing, we need to get all privately connected
wifi out of the building, which means we need to get ethernet to a few
places that didn't have it before.

What 500MB powerline equipment have you used in the past and would
recommend for a single circuit run? We have the ability to put power plugs
in the power room at the same circuit to prevent going through the breaker
box and can run ethernet from that location no problem.

I'm looking for something that is reliable and will give us at least G
wireless speeds that we're replacing (faster is better, but this is a low
use area so they won't really get a huge gain from a speed increase)

Thanks!

I've heard a few reasons on why they're skipping 9, and the most plausible
one is that they found that a lot of programs were written back in the day

capturing windows 9 as well. By skipping the version they avoid bad

[H] Software for windows 8.1 Multiseat

2014-09-29 Thread Christopher Fisk
Hello Collective!

My kids (like any in their age range these days) are very much into
minecraft. We have two computers, but they're in separate rooms so
communication between them isn't as easy as if they were next to each other.

I've considered going with a multiseat setup on my computer, but have only
found two pieces of software that looks like it'll work. Does anyone have
familiarity with either piece of software and/or have any suggestions?

Miniframe has SoftXpand. It only works on windows 7 currently, so that one
is out (But seems to be the most popular for this)

Ibik has Aster, which supports windows 8.1 and I'm in the process of
downloading a demo version now.

My goal is to have my dual monitor setup (and possibly a third monitor
going to the TV when their friends are over) with two keyboards, two mice
and let them all play minecraft together in same room.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
