I know for CSS they hold the spray material that players use in game.
Its probably something similar on that mod.

2009/5/13 Graham M graham.mcmas...@ntlworld.com

Check the logs from your download site for 404 - File Not Found errors,
it's probably a misspelt filename in a res file, a missing res file or
capitalisation in the wrong place (if its a Linux based web server)

Curtis, only you or someone who has access to your email account can
subscribe yourself to this list. If you didn't do it, then your email
has likely been compromised (dude, what do you expect of a hotmail
account?) and you should scrap the account and get a new one. If you
did do it, then only you can take yourself off of this list. Instead
of spamming us, please follow the instructions that appear at the
bottom of each email from this list, and remove yourself.

Look in your email inbox for a message with a subject of hlds --
confirmation of subscription -- request The only way to get on
this list is by replying to that email, or following the instructions in
it.

Alfred, this list is a double confirmation list, isn't it? IOW, it's
not possible for someone to sign up without responding to an email
from the list, correct? We seem to be having a rash of people that are
wondering why they are on the list, but IIRC the only way to complete
the signup is to resond to the do you really want to be on this
list? email the mail manager sends out.

Works for me ok I think, make sure you _don't_ have set sv_wwwDlDisconnected

they are still connected as such. I haven't tested this properly though, but
we certainly have some servers downloading from both.

Re: [hlds] sv_downloadurl usage

2006-03-09 Thread Deacon - Digital Gaming eXtreme

In server.cfg enter the following:
sv_downloadurl http://www.yourwebsite.com/sv_downloadurl

Create a directory on your website called sv_downloadurl

Copy the res, bsp, sound, etc. files into that directory. You do not need
to copy ALL you game server files into that dir, just the custom ones you
want to use. So, if I'm loading customer dod maps to the website I would
extract the files from the zip. You should have folders like maps, sprites,
sounds, etc. Copy those files/folders into your sv_downloadurl directory.

Also, there are seveal stickies that describe this on the steampowered.com
forums.

Try that and see if it works for you.

it downloads from both places

you seem to have some big sound files that players must download from
your
server

I have barf.wav and bungholio.wav, both fairly small, in my res files,
most
of the sounds just sit there until I rotate them through the res files. I
don't like players to have to sit there and download too many sound files.
The map might have had some bigger files, some of the kitkat and mario
maps
have bigger sound files, and those probably come from the server.

I wonder if that is what I'm seeing - players downloading the maps and
stuff
from host, and then the map specific files from the server? That would
explain a lot - several of my regulars are European dialup customers, and
it
would take them a while to download, for example, the kitkat_casino files.

another thing i noticed is that your op4ctf.wad file is corrupt yours is
only ^^0.6 mb original file is ^^7.5 mb

Ack, how did that happen? The one I got from hldsupdatetool updates is
5,848,736 bytes, which matches the one in my steam op4 client directory,
which matches my old HL1 Won file. I'm copying it now...done... Thanks for
catching that - I had no idea it was bad :(

There are quite a few threads on how you can protect your download url in
the steam forums. I guess those guys are mistaken huh Hackmett? I admit I am
not that savy and I just do what I can to protect what is mine but if you

I've seen the issue with the trainling backslash also, but could not arrive
at a definitive answer because the results were not consistant. At one time
I added it, another time removed it. I just noticed in my autoexec.cfg my
last sv_downloadurl was:

sv_downloadurl http://www.zootal.com/gearbox/;

OK, I added it back (and changed the directory to discourage leachers, or at
least to help keep the honest honest :)

Not sure it is the same, but I ran into this yesterday on my server and
I had to add a trailing / to the url in server.cfg, restarted the server
and it started working.

http://www.deadice.us/ookssteamingpileofcrap/gearbox/;

Curious if that helps?

Last I heard people can use your download url unless you take measures to
stop it. If that is still the case you probably shouldn't tell anyone what
it is, especially on a mailing list for server ops.

Hi,

just looked my apache logs, there is still activity.
As it is a client feature you may check if the client has the right value
for sv_downloadurl.

When you are connected to the server, just open console, type
sv_downloadurl and let the auto-complete show you the value ;)

Everybody can find out your http-dl url by looking the var and it makes no
sense at all to hide your url ;)

[hlds] sv_downloadurl issue

2005-11-08 Thread Chris K
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I've noticed and had a few complaint's of an issue where resources are
redownloaded over again upon reconnecting. I have seen this myself on my
client and am looking for more insight.

My issue might have been a matter of case. My client had a few uppercase
files and my isp host had lowercase files (identical files otherwise). Now
windows is not case sensitive and Unix is, which may or may not be the
problem. Once I deleted the files and reconnected they came down one last
time and all has been well (I did not try renaming them).

Anyone else have any story's/fixes to tell regarding files repeatedly
downloading? My fear is that I could be unnecessarily running out the
bandwidth clock on my host.

Actually the only content I've noticed getting re-downloaded lately is
from the /graphs/mapname.ain files, first the bz2 ones off my web
server, then it tries to pull them straight from the game server. Didn't
pay attention to when it started though... Haven't noticed maps or
anything getting re-downloaded.

Re: [hlds] sv_downloadurl issue

2005-11-08 Thread Kevin Ottalini

Content on linux/unix web servers is case sensitive, content on win32
webservers is not.

For the BSP this can be complex since the map name mapNaMe.bsp as entered
on the server console or in the mapcycle defines the bsp name that will be
requested from the URL (so on linux/unix servers the case must match) then
the content that is defined in the .res file and within the BSP must match
as well, so a sound name that is sound.WAV requires that exact name and
case on the linux/unix webserver too.

Having a different case for the content in the .res file (from the actual
content in the BSP) may cause the content to be downloaded (attempted) a
second time, always important to have all content name/case match
everywhere.

One thing to be aware of though, if content with a space or other special
character is not available, the client may display a truncated name in
console for the failed content.

For example, hldm server, + linux web server which does _not_ have this
piece of content available:
sound/music/don't_worry_be_happy.wav

the webserver will flag the correct name:
[Tue Nov 8 10:38:02 2005] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] File does not
exist: valve/sound/music/don't_worry_be_happy.wav

but the client will display a message that the failed download is:
Error: server failed to transmit file 'sound/music/don'

(client will properly d/l the file if it is available).

Win32 HTTP servers just send it all regardless of case, assuming its
available.

So in summary (so it all works regardless):
1. server must have a .res file for the BSP locally and on the http server
2. content names in .res file must match content names within the BSP
including case
3. content names on http server must match content names within the BSP
including case
4. mapcycle name (or map as typed in console) must have the same case as the
mapname on the http server

If you are running any addon mod (like MANI or adminmod) that can force
additional content down, be sure to disable this since if that content is
not on your http server it will cause an additional connect/reconnect by the
client to the http server as well.

Any content not available on your http server won't be downloaded so there
should be no bandwidth hit regardless of the number of failed attempts.

Subject: [hlds] sv_downloadurl issue

I've noticed and had a few complaint's of an issue where resources are
redownloaded over again upon reconnecting. I have seen this myself on my
client and am looking for more insight.

My issue might have been a matter of case. My client had a few uppercase
files and my isp host had lowercase files (identical files otherwise). Now
windows is not case sensitive and Unix is, which may or may not be the
problem. Once I deleted the files and reconnected they came down one last
time and all has been well (I did not try renaming them).

Anyone else have any story's/fixes to tell regarding files repeatedly
downloading? My fear is that I could be unnecessarily running out the
bandwidth clock on my host.

from the /graphs/mapname.ain files, first the bz2 ones off my web

Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL

2005-09-23 Thread Dustin

Sorry I was not trying cause a problem.

Yes using a seprate web server is a great idea, my posts were targeting the
guys that were having problems getting all the right files to there web
share, my solution (and yes when large groups of players do not have the map
there is a lag, but in my case it's the limit of transfer my server
solutions has,I am only allowed so much of the OC3 pipe per second) makes it
simple to install new maps, I don't have to worry about installing the map
in more then one place. Every thing installed on the server is all ready
made available to the web server due to the nature of the setup.

Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL

2005-09-22 Thread Jim

actually the gain is all the way around, reduces space utilized on the Web
Server, the user when connecting to your game server pulls from the web
server and does not take a seat on the game server until they have all of
the required objects. Second the transfer rate is fast of course depends on
your bandwidth of the Web Server.

An area when people setup objects on thier web server is to insure you have
a .RES of all of the required objects for custom maps. This should be on the
game server, otherwise when people download they will be missing objects,
sounds etc.

Another item to remember, only the .BZ2 files are required on the web
server. you do not require both the .BZ2 and the object non-compressed.

Cheers

You could use it for all file-types, but the benefit is mostly gained
used with larger files like .bsp and large sound-files ++.
If used for small files, you would end up with a larger compressed file
than the original. Also ,theoretical, the client would have to use time
to decompress the file when downloaded, making the total transfer even
longer...

RE: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL

2005-09-22 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
18 players of 24 that doesn't have the map you are running, doesn't sound
real.
And if so, clients will only download it once.
You should be running a lot of custom maps to have this problem.

And like someone else said, if you care about performance you will not run
the server on a poor connection.
The tranfers are also a lot smaller when only 6 people are playing, right?

Also like someone else said, the game server it self is limiting the
download when not using sv_downloadurl (to the rate settings?) My only
reason to use this is to speed up that transfeer. Not to save the network
load.

Thank you all for answering my questions on this topic. Just for the
sake of the next person who tries to do this I thought that I would
summerise my experience.

1. Find webspace and put maps folder with bsp files into it
2. Set SV_DownloadURL (ensuring there is no forward slash on the end
and the folder that you set is has the same contents as the cstrike
directory, obviously just the bits that need downloading)
3. Changelevel to a different map to test to see if the downloads work
without compression
4. Download bzip2 [ http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/bzip2.htm ]
5. Install into default location
6. { My computer properties advanced environment variables path
} add your bzip2 installation directory to here (it means you can run
the command from command prompt no matter which folder you are in)
7. Create a folder and put your maps in it
8. Create a .bat file (make a text file and rename it zip_maps.bat)
9. Put this one line in it
 bzip2 -k -9 *.bsp
10. Run the bat file
11. Make 2 subfolders called 'original maps' and 'compressed maps' to
ensure that you don't re-zip the same files each time
12. Upload .bsp file to the game server
13. Upload the .bsp.bz2 file to the web server
14. With a new map, test

If I removed the .BSP map from the Server (Webserver) the map with the
.BSP.BZ2, downloaded but then reported the Map.bsp was missing. When I went
back and reviewed the client it was evendent the Map.BSP.BZ2 althou sucessfully

So Second test. I loaded up the Map.BSP and the MAP.BSP.BZ2 on the Web Server.

My server creates the files it self, I just have to move them to the HTTP
site.
Looked for the files in the maps-folder for maps that you have for download?

In example:
I have fy_iceworld.bsp on the HTTP-server and in my maps-folder.
The server has created the files: fy_iceworld.bsp.ztmp by it self.

I don't know when this file is made. Maybe someone knows more about this.
Just thought I would inform.

You could use it for all file-types, but the benefit is mostly gained
used with larger files like .bsp and large sound-files ++.
If used for small files, you would end up with a larger compressed file

to decompress the file when downloaded, making the total transfer even
longer...

Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL

2005-09-21 Thread Dabosman
Graham,

I've found the easiest way to do zip all files in BZIP2 format .. is like
Rick said ... Put the Bzip2 executable program in your path somewhere
(C:\windows). Then, put all the map files under one folder set (like
fy_iceworld_adv) which might include fy_iceworld_adv.bsp and
fy_iceworld_adv.nav. Other materials can be here too if they are used by
the map .. But just make sure to upload them to the correct folders on your
web server and CS server (like materials/etc instead of the map/ folder).

Once you have all files in the folder, I've been using the following
command-line with great success:

bzip2 -k -9 *.*

The -k option will KEEP the original files ... because otherwise, it removes
them. The reason you need this is ... you will still have to upload the
original unzipped file to your CS:S server - and of course, the bzipped file
to your web server .. so you need BOTH sets of files (compressed and
uncompressed). The -9 switch tells it to use maximum compression. I've
seen maps cut to 1/5th of their original size and more. Truly great.

Once you've zipped all files, then I ftp to both my web server and CS server
.. and upload the BZIP'd to the web server ... and uncompressed to the CS
server. Works like a champ.

That 7-zip GUI program looks great ... but the only thing I noticed is that
even though it adds RIGHT-CLICK ability in Windows Explorer .. you still
have to zip EACH file individually .. and go through the GUI interface to do
so. It seems that the command-line would still be quicker in this case ..
unless someone comes up with a right-click ability that zips EACH file
INDIVIDUALLY .. like they have to be on the web server.

The only thing I've wondered about is ... I bzipped my SOUNDS that people
download (like headshot.mp3 etc.) ... and each time someone connects ... it
'goes through' them like they are going to download them .. but just seems
to be checking to see if they have the files. I'm thinking this may be
because it can't immediately check to see if they have the file .. without
parsing the bzipped file first (since the sounds are already uncompressed on
their computer) .. and then it realizes they already have the file. Just a
minor annoyance but I'm thinking of un-bzipping my sound files for this
reason. Just wanted to give you a heads up on that.

Good luck.

Kevin

That will bzip every file in the current directory, and if there's any

Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL

2005-09-21 Thread Dustin

A diffrent approach. This of course asumes that your web server is on the
same server as the game server.

Why not point the Web server to the game directory? You do need to make sure
that you configure the web server to only allow read access to the right
folders and block out the cfg and other critical folders, be kind of bad to
have your server.cfg file viewable from the web server. But if done right
you would no longer need to worry about what files need to be added to the
web server and any server created files would all ready be there.

used with larger files like .bsp and large sound-files ++.
If used for small files, you would end up with a larger compressed file
than the original. Also ,theoretical, the client would have to use time
to decompress the file when downloaded, making the total transfer even
longer...

One more question. Does this only work for bsp file or can I use them
for files in the materials folder too?

On the server I admin, I have set up a web server on the same server as
the game server and created a .no-ip.com address pointing to the IP and
put that address in the downloadurl cvar, then edited httpd.conf and
pointed the web directory to the cstrike directory and made a few
ammendmants to only enable through files that are required, obviously
leaving out extensions like .conf and .ini and it works great.

You shouldn't run your sv_downloadurl mirror on the same physical
location as your Game servers. Think about it. Do you really want your
Game Servers precious resources being squandered on downloading map
files to 18 players on a full 24 slot server? The other six players are
going to experience some erratic play while your server pushes out files
to 18 people at the same time and tries to run your game servers. Not
to mention anyone playing on any other game servers you happen to be
running at the same time will suffer as well. If you do not have
separate web space there are places to get sv_downloadurl resources for
a very reasonable price.I use URLDownload.com and I have been very happy
with them. If you are going to offer High Speed Downloads to your
players the cost is not that hard to deal with.

I recently decided to check my sv_downloadurl and noticed two things happening.

If I removed the .BSP map from the Server (Webserver) the map with the
.BSP.BZ2, downloaded but then reported the Map.bsp was missing. When I went
back and reviewed the client it was evendent the Map.BSP.BZ2 althou sucessfully
downloaded did not go into the client directory for MAPS.

So Second test. I loaded up the Map.BSP and the MAP.BSP.BZ2 on the Web Server.
I notced that both downloaded. The Map.BSP was there in the client Directory.
Almost seemed like putting the .BZ2 on the HTTP Server was serving no pupose.

Is anyone else seeing this happen and how to stop the double download and only
download the compressed file.

you are correct with adding the / first and foremost. This has been a

disputed issue for a while and you would only delete the / if you add the
slash in your .res file.

The later comment about Materials, Sounds etc. If you are running a Custom

Map (.BSP) using default Steam Material, Sounds etc no .res file is required.

If you using custom Sounds, Materials, Models etc. You will require a .res

file on your Game Server (only) in the maps folder that maps out the required
custom objects.

Each of these objects should be in the .bz2 format as well and located within

the folder structure identical to the game server on your Web Server.

I, just went through this and you are just about there...

I found this tutorial for the sv_downloadurl setting.
I was just wondering if I can get it to download any file, not only maps?

To do this, you copy the files needed for de_generic to your webspace,
placing them in a folder called my_cstrike in your webspace top-level
directory
Does it have to be my_cstrike, or what ever you choose as long as you keep
the structure from the root of the web area?

Why I ask is because I host fy_iceworld which needs de_vegas.wad to run.
The map gets downloaded but then cs crash with en error message containing
this wad file.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why I ask is because I host fy_iceworld which needs de_vegas.wad to run.
The map gets downloaded but then cs crash with en error message containing
 this wad file.

 Any help would be appreciated.

I will try this Resgen and see if that works :)

Wait -- are you talking SRCDS or HLDS? If SRCDS, has ResGen been updated to
accomodate the new .RES format for SCRDS?

sv_downloadurl will download maps, wad files, sprites, models, sounds,
and tga files. For this to happen you need to create a mapname.res
file for each map that contains all the external files required by the
 map. Resgen
at
www.unitedadmins.com will automatically generate .res files for you.

I found this tutorial for the sv_downloadurl setting.
I was just wondering if I can get it to download any file, not only
 maps?

To do this, you copy the files needed for de_generic to your
webspace, placing them in a folder called my_cstrike in your
webspace top-level directory Does it have to be my_cstrike, or what
ever you choose as long as you
keep
the structure from the root of the web area?

Why I ask is because I host fy_iceworld which needs de_vegas.wad to

It is easy. Just make a text file and put this in it:
de_vegas.wad
and save the file as fy_iceworld.res and put it in the maps folder on
your game server. Now put the de_vegas.wad file on your web server. Done.

[hlds] SV_DOWNLOADURL and Resource Setup

2004-12-02 Thread Bud Ingram
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I was looking at my server last night and noticed that there are download
directories. I also notice that the RESLIST directory shows LST files which
contain what appear to be the same data the old .RES files would contain.

What was really exicting to me was to see that the custom maps in rotation have
their own .LST files, to clarify, I have several custom maps on the server and
those not in the map cycle are not showing a .LST file.

Does anyone know how to setup to allow downloading of the additional materials
for custom maps (sounds, textures, etc.) or is this being done automatically
upon request to download by a given client attempting to connect to your server?

From what I see, the .RES files are *not* working (see Steampowered User
Forums)...

Thanks!

I have had the multible download problem as well. It would download
everything from the mirror and then download a file or to from the game

I could figure was a corrupt file on the mirror so I reuploaded everything

I changed my sound list recently, and haven't had a chance to upload all of
the sound files. I'm not sure why it pulls the models from the server as I
thought they were on the web site. That was a test to see if I could use
non-standard models (which so far I've not been able to, I don't Steam will
allow it). I probably should take them out of the RES files. There is
usually good traffic afternoons and evenings, plus there is a bunch from
Europe that play from about 1am to 3am or so every night. I get up to go
