Fernando,

Using your driver update example, I tried a couple of ideas on my system,
including seeing if the mouseover command would work. It didn't. However, the
words you indicate are missing from the control appear when I switch to the
JAWS cursor.

I'm using a 64-bit Windows 7 machine and right now the last release of JAWS 18.
I haven't tested this with 2018.

Hi Mike,

I have access keys speaking set to All and Tutor Messages to Custom Messages
Only. However, I tried the Menus and Controls options but the issue is not
fixed.
It is expected that this setting doesn't fix this issue. This is because tutor
messages handles speaking of hints given by JAWS on how to operate the focused
control type with the keyboard; for example, when you are on a button and have
Tutor Messages to Menus and Controls, JAWS will say using the Tutor Message
voice: “To activate press space bar.”
These are JAWS-specific messages. Control descriptions are small help texts,
often just under the control name, which gives information on what a specific
control does and it's displayed on the screen. For example, when you are in the
Driver Update wizard for a device in Device Manager, the Search Driver Software
on your Computer button have a description telling “Search and install the
driver software manually,” and the button for check automatically tells
something longer about the searching on the computer and Windows Update unless
you disabled this in the device installation settings.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Mike,

Thank you for replying.
Yes, I checked both Quick Settings and the Settings Center for the active
verbosity level. In the active level, which is Beginner, I have checked the
Control Descriptions item, and changing between long or short messages produce
the same result on this problem.
Regarding Speech and Sounds Manager, I only changed the Classic scheme to make
different heading levels to play piano sounds. Even so, I tried reverting to
the original Classic scheme but, as I supposed, the problem is not fixed.
I also tried running JAWS in English to see if perhaps this is a specific issue
in the Spanish version (it wouldn't be the first time I must edit a translated
message missing a %1 or documentation which states things in an order different
to the actual one, for example), but this issue is also present in English.
I think this should be somewhat related to the FocusChangedEvent, but my
knowledge of event functions and scripting language in general is poor. As a
workaround I tried to add the SayControlDescription function in the
FocusChangedEvent, but it didn't worked at all.

Do you have some other ideas I can try?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Adrian,

Test doing this using NVDA with Speak Control Descriptions option in Object
Presentation dialog enabled, or with JAWS's touch cursor with advanced object
navigation enabled, press ALT+ENTER on a button and, when the Virtual Viewer
showing properties opens, check the value of the property named HelpText.
You'll notice that JAWS is not reading this help text when it should, even if
you enabled Control Descriptions item in your current verbosity level (for

2018-02-08 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Kevin,

Unlike the Outlook Android version which offers a Files section, the only
communication of Outlook 2016 for Windows with OneDrive is for attaching files.
It allows to attach files not synchronized on your computer even if you have
Files on Demand feature disabled or you are using Windows 7, as well as sending
links to OneDrive files or folders instead of actually attaching the files to
the message.
But even the Android version requires the OneDrive app to be installed for most
operations, so in practice the Files section on this platform is a useless
limited front-end.

Hope I was clear enough.

Hi friends,

I Have just purchased a new laptop which has Realtek audio set up on it.
When you plug in speakers, it keeps coming up with a popup asking which device
you plugged in.
I Can use the JAWS touch cursor to move around this screen and there is a
message saying do not show this dialog again which it would be good to select
but for some reason, when the touch cursor is on, I try to use the JAWS left
click button but it doesn't seem to tick this box.
I tried pressing enter and return as well.
Has anyone come across any similar issues and found a way around?
The application for the Realtek Waves seems to be very poorly written
accessability wise.
I Have tried searching for the jack selection option in other ways e.g. in
control panel, sound and under the advanced and properties tabs to no effect.
Even tried searching the web for a registry entry but I have had no luck.
I Am also having issues with the Dell DW15 dock, when you plug in speakers to
this, it will work for a while and then the sound card will drop out.
I Have updated the system bios, device drivers and firmware etc and the same
thing still happens.

Any thought from anyone else with a similar setup would be very much
appreciated!

Hi Mike,

I don't know whiy you may want to prevent Silverlight from updating or ever
installing.
However, if Silverlight updates are continually unhiden, be aware that it is
actually an add-on for IE. Try opening IE, going to Tools and then Manage
Add-ons. In this dialog, find the Microsoft Silverlight plugin and disable it.
Do similar steps in other browsers for which Silverlight plugins are installed,

Hi Mike,

The earliest JAWS version functional in Windows 7 is the latest update of JAWS

This version simply worked, but it was not completely adapted at that time, so
there are some things like the Shutdown button in Start menu and perhaps the

The version which finally was completely adapted to Windows 7 besides simply

If you can still get the Microsoft "Natural" keyboard, it is a full-sized
ergonometric keyboard. The left and right hands are slightly skewed inward

Yeah, this was a thing that happened after a certain Windows update. Very
annoying, especially as I went into Mobile Device Centre and reset the
setting Microsoft changed, only to have them reset it again their way. It
doesn't really look like its' not being supported. They just changed some
settings so that a Windows mE device like the Packmate or Braille Note won't
acknowlecdge the USB connection. I took a quick look at the steps on that
page you linked, and this doesn't look like what I had to do. I believe all
I needed to do was change two settings in Computer Management Console. I'll
have to try and recall or figure out the steps. Seemed quite a bit simpler
than what is here though, and now my WMDC and braile notetaker work fine.

When you perform the transfer to your SD card, do you transfer the

What a hell of a problem. If you went to your documents folder and then
pressed the ctrl spacebar to insure that no folder had the focus. And then
pressed the application key and arrowed up to, new and pressed enter. And
you pressed return on folder. Then if you typed the name of the folder and
you got a new folder with that name. Then you placed an item in that folder
and you found that it was there but when you went back later the folder was
gone. Well then I think that you might have a poltergeist in your new home.

transferred The New Yorker magazine into it, and today, when I looked in
Documents. The folder was gone. I'd transferred the magazine to my VR Stream

2018-02-08 Thread Mike B.
Hi Miriam,

Have you talked to Microsoft Accessibility about this? Maybe your antivirus
sees the folder as a threat, or something is set wrong in the properties of
the folder? Or, maybe there's something in the Tools / Options / Views page
that's needing to be looked at. I would be willing to bet that the
accessibility folks could get it straightened out. If you want to call
them, here's their phone number & hours:

Okay, another highly non-techy idea. How about copying the "Book" folder
somewhere else where it might stay put. Then each time it disappears from
Documents, you could copy it back over. Not a solution, but maybe it would
save some frustration.

Many times I have seen important and optional updates come down which

Re: [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder

2018-02-08 Thread Adrian Spratt
Miriam, I have no idea why your coy folder keeps disappearing, but based on
what you're reporting, how about making sure at least one file stays there
permanently? I get the sense that the folder goes into hiding whenever it's
empty of files.

You don't need to press the alt cap lock to turn it on or off. Just tap on
your cap lock key twice quickly without pressing any other key to turn cap
lock on or off.

Hi Vicky. Are you asking how to temporarily disable the caps lock key as

the

jaws modifier? I think you have to change the keyboard layout to do this,
however you can toggle the capslock on and off by double tapping it

Vicky, If you have the laptop keyboard configuration set up on your
computer, you should be able to tap quickly on the cap lock key and hear
either cap lock on, or cap lock off. When cap lock is on you will type in
all caps. With the cap lock off you will use the shift key to type an
uppercase letter. You probably already know that. But here's the thing, if
it is not working that way for you, then, it is time to call FS.

I was just looking for the key itself, which is the caps lock and how to
turn it off when I need to use the shift key.

For some reason, tapping it twice quickly has no effect. If I change the
JAWS key to another key, my caps lock key works fine, so I know it's not an
issue with the physical key on the keyboard.

I'm just wondering if there is something else I need to adjust to get it to

That's strange.

I do not seem to get this message on my home desktop, which uses Realtech
High-definition Audio, and the requisite drivers. However, I do remember
seeing it at work, whenever I plugged in my headphones. I do not remember
having to use the touch cursor at all. I don't recall what I did to exit the
box ... but I do remember it coming up every single time, indeed, so maybe
it was a similar situation.
I suppose the good ole' JAWS cursor won't help you at all?

I tried pressing enter and return as well.
Has anyone come across any similar issues and found a way around?
The application for the Realtek Waves seems to be very poorly written

I Have tried searching for the jack selection option in other ways e.g. in

effect.
Even tried searching the web for a registry entry but I have had no luck.
I Am also having issues with the Dell DW15 dock, when you plug in speakers

I Have updated the system bios, device drivers and firmware etc and the same
thing still happens.

Any thought from anyone else with a similar setup would be very much

I have used Realtech audio for years at work, and now also at home, on a
desktop running Windows 10, without any issues at all. However, the date of
my driver publication appears to be sometime in the summer of 2016. I
suppose if this is a new problem, I shouldn't bother to hit that "update"
button.

The sound/audio settings in windows control panel also work fine for me. No
touchpad here, and I do understand a lot of users do prefer to have it
disabled, if it exists.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Mechanical USB keyboard that works well with JAWS2018 and Windows10

2018-02-08 Thread JM Casey
I don't have any concrete suggestions, because I always just grab whatever
keyboard feels usable that's lying around some local second-hand store. I've
also pilfered one or two from work departments over the years (they're
always lying around). I had a fancy one for a while with lots of extra keys
that activated browsers, media players and so on. It was neat, but as stiff
as a board, so I gave it up, and went back to your generic office-type
keyboard. All these that I have seen have number pads, and as far as I know
that's the only thing that makes a difference to JAWS, though lots of
desktop users actually seem to prefer the laptop layout, and it's easy
enough to learn. So, while I don't know anything about
manufacturerscheck the second-hand stores, if there are any around you.
The last time I stopped in I bought two keyboards for around $5 each, and
now I have a backup in my closet in case I spill mustard all over this one
or something. :P

If you can still get the Microsoft "Natural" keyboard, it is a full-sized
ergonometric keyboard. The left and right hands are slightly skewed inward
and outward for less RMI, so it is split in the middle. Easy to get used to
the feel. I've been using this type of keyboard on all my computers for 20
years. Hopefully they are still available.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 17 reading blank in Word and excel files!

Hi All,

Just loaded JAWS 17 onto a new windows 10 computer. Now when I load up MS Word
16 documents or an Excel file JAWS is saying blank even though there is text
contained within the Word document or numerical data in the Excel documents. I
am not sure if this is a compatibility issue or not. JAWS 17 will read the
title bar and other extraneous material of the documents window but will not
read the general text typed up inside the document or spreadsheets themselves.
I have also downloaded a current JAWS 2018 and ran it in demo mode but still
the same result.
Just wondered if anyone else had an issue like this.

Many thanks for feedback.

Paul.

2018-02-08 Thread Dave...Oregonian
If you can still get the Microsoft "Natural" keyboard, it is a full-sized
ergonometric keyboard. The left and right hands are slightly skewed inward
and outward for less RMI, so it is split in the middle. Easy to get used to
the feel. I've been using this type of keyboard on all my computers for 20
years. Hopefully they are still available.

Hello,
I am looking for a mechanical USB desktop keyboard that works well

environment where one types for prolonged periods.
Would anyone happen to have any suggestions?
Thank you in advance for any responses

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS And Realtek Sound Driver Configuration

2018-02-08 Thread amcarr1
Hi,

I have a Dell, and I could not find a way to navigate with JAWS in the Sound
Card and TouchPad settings. I had to have a mouse user turn off the
TouchPad, and make the generic sound card driver the default. JAWS was not
a happy camper with the RealTech driver. I believe that there is a known
problem with using external speakers and headsets on some computers running
Windows10.

Annette

Hi friends,

I Have just purchased a new laptop which has Realtek audio set up on it.
When you plug in speakers, it keeps coming up with a popup asking which
device you plugged in.
I Can use the JAWS touch cursor to move around this screen and there is a
message saying do not show this dialog again which it would be good to
select but for some reason, when the touch cursor is on, I try to use the
JAWS left click button but it doesn't seem to tick this box.
I tried pressing enter and return as well.
Has anyone come across any similar issues and found a way around?
The application for the Realtek Waves seems to be very poorly written
accessability wise.
I Have tried searching for the jack selection option in other ways e.g. in
control panel, sound and under the advanced and properties tabs to no
effect.
Even tried searching the web for a registry entry but I have had no luck.
I Am also having issues with the Dell DW15 dock, when you plug in speakers
to this, it will work for a while and then the sound card will drop out.
I Have updated the system bios, device drivers and firmware etc and the same
thing still happens.

Any thought from anyone else with a similar setup would be very much
appreciated!

turn it off when I need to use the shift key.

For some reason, tapping it twice quickly has no effect. If I change the

I'm just wondering if there is something else I need to adjust to get it

So is the caps lock key currently acting as the JAWS key? If so, try the
JAWS pass through keystroke caps lock plus the letter b. Then press the caps
lock key. I am not sure if will work but if is worth a try.

You don't need to press the alt cap lock to turn it on or off. Just tap on
your cap lock key twice quickly without pressing any other key to turn cap

When set to laptop layout, the caps lock acts as a toggle. If you want to
invoke the capslock for instance, if you want to type aan entire word in
caps, press it twice quickly. Jaws will say, caps lock on. Once you are
finished, toggle it off by pressing it twice quickly again.

Re: [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder

2018-02-08 Thread LeDon
What a hell of a problem. If you went to your documents folder and then
pressed the ctrl spacebar to insure that no folder had the focus. And then
pressed the application key and arrowed up to, new and pressed enter. And
you pressed return on folder. Then if you typed the name of the folder and
you got a new folder with that name. Then you placed an item in that folder
and you found that it was there but when you went back later the folder was
gone. Well then I think that you might have a poltergeist in your new home.
Check out to find if other, mysteries are happening around the home.

Remember that Books folder that I constructed and it then disappeared and I
reconstructed it? I followed someone's directions and backspaced or
something and it sat comfortably in Documents until I used it yesterday. I
transferred The New Yorker magazine into it, and today, when I looked in
Documents. The folder was gone. I'd transferred the magazine to my VR Stream
so the folder was empty. It seems that each time I put it back in documents,
it stays until I use it. After I use it, it disappears. Can anyone make a
suggestion? 64 bit, Win7 IE 11, Jaws 18, Office 365.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS keystroke needed

2018-02-08 Thread LeDon

I'm just wondering if there is something else I need to adjust to get it to
function correctly when tapping twice to use as a caps lock key.

So is the caps lock key currently acting as the JAWS key? If so, try the JAWS
pass through keystroke caps lock plus the letter b. Then press the caps lock
key. I am not sure if will work but if is worth a try.

Hi all,

Since many versions ago, JAWS is not reading the control descriptions even
when I have this item checked in the current verbosity level settings. If I
want to get this data, I manually have to locate the Touch Cursor with
Advanced Object Navigation on the desired control, press ALT+ENTER and find
the value of the HelpText property, which obviously is slow and often
useless.

Does someone know how I could fix this to match the behavior of some old
versions like JAWS 9, in which this verbosity setting was always honored? I
am using Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and JAWS
