Narator speech in safe mode is supposed to be a new feature of the latest
Microsoft Windows 10 update but it is not released yet.

It is possible to get speech support in safe mode, but it was something I meant
to look into and never did. I got the impression it's much easier to do with
nVDA than with JAWS. I think there are instructions on the web somewhere. The
short answer would probably be, if you just want to get it done quickly and
have sighted assistance handy, go for it. I'm glad it's not strictly speaking
necessary though.

Howdy Kimsan,

Here are the steps, & the direct download link for the removal tool. Read them
all the way through before using the removal tool.

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

1. Press enter on the, AvastClear, .EXE file.
2. You will get the following message:

Avast Antivirus Clear
It is recommended to run this tool from Windows Safe Mode.
Do you want to do that?
Press "Yes" to reboot into Safe Mode now and run this tool from there.
Press "No" to continue running this tool as it is (not recommended).
Yes No
3. Tab to the, No button, & press enter or spacebar. Now press the spacebar on
the, Uninstall button, to start the uninstall process as Administrator.
After Avast is uninstalled you should get a prompt to restart the computer.
When the computer reboots you can check to see if any remnants of the program
are left behind. The 1 time I used this removal tool the only remnant I found
left behind was an Avast folder in the Program Files, & Program Data folders on
the root of the C drive, but I did not check the registry.

Hi,

I accidentally installed Avast when installing CCleaner.

I thought I removed it all after using revo uninstaller.

On google here, it states when using the tool Avast has to remove it, it boots
into safe mode?

Is there another way, as I never messed with safe mode before.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and the Powerpoint accessibility checker

2018-02-22 Thread Fernando Gregoire
It was actually introduced in Office 2010. In Office 2016 Microsoft made it
more visible because an update added a button for quickly opening this in the
Review tab of the ribbon, but the Accessibility Checker is available from
witting the Check for Issues split button of the Info tab on Backstage view (or
the File tab) since Office 2010 was first released.

I believe it was actually introduced in 2007 or 2010.

On a side note, Microsoft just published a complete list of accessibility
features in all of their products, and the list is enormous. It's definitely

Re: [JAWS-Users] returning to Jaws version 16

2018-02-22 Thread Fernando Gregoire
There should be no issues, unless you have customized the default script file
in JAWS 2018 or changed the symbols file for Eloquence and you want to copy
these customizations from JAWS 2018 to 16. This is because the default script
file is not compatible between versions if you have directly modified it, and
regarding punctuation/symbols spoken by Eloquence JAWS 17 started to use
hexadecimal language codes instead of internal Eloquence language names (e.g.
0x409 instead of American English), so punctuation customizations won't be
detected by JAWS 16 if you don't replace language codes by internal names
manually using Notepad or any other text editor.
The other customizations can usually be copied to a previous version with no
problem.

Hope it helps!

I' dbe a bit worried why JAWS is deleting the scripts. It definitely
shouldn't be doing that.

To install the scripts, make sure you are copying them into the folder
C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Freedom

2018-02-22 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi,
The latest Jaws update seem to be working just fine with IE to me on two
computers. Maybe you need to reset your IE. Here below are the steps to reset
IE.
How to reset IE 11:
I would recommend re setting IE. Here are the steps to do that.
1. Open IE
2. Press alt + T for tools menu.
3. Press up arrow once and you should be on options. Press the enter key.
4. Press shift + Tab and you should hear General.
5. Press the right arrow key until you hear advance.
6. Tab until you hear reset button.
7. Press enter on the reset button.
8. A dialog box will come up. Press tab once and you will hear something about
checking this box to delete personal information. Press the
spacebar here to check this check box.
9. Tab twice to the reset button and press the spacebar.
Wait a few minutes then close IE and reopen it. Now it should work like new.
Note: checking the box about removing personal information will not remove your
favorites in IE.

to to be fixed in an update coming out next month.

For now, I am running JAWS and ZoomText separately. Even running it this
way, the latest ZoomText crashes on average twice a day. Sometimes I have
to reboot to get it started again, and sometimes I can just restart
ZoomText. I am hoping the next update will also fix this issue.

Do you have issues with ZoomText crashing? I am on Windows 7, 64-bit.

I understand. And if something is working well, it doesn't make sense to just
stop using it. I still use Winamp on this machine even though it hasn't been
developed for several years now. I like it and it still has my favourite
playlist interface. But a web browser is a different sort of thing. As
difficult as it might seem to adapt, it will pay off in the end. And the
learning curve/experience of switching over to, say, Firefox, is really not
that steep.

It doesn't sound like everybody is reporting this IE issue.

Still, it makes sense to accustom oneself to moving away from IE. I know it has
some decent features, but it's increasingly ineffective and unusable on some
websites. I don't know when security updates for it will stop ..
probably not til 2020 as that's when Windows 7 support ends ... but still.

Firefox 52 ESR is currently the thing to get if you are wanting to use FF and
JAWS. It works without any issues. There has been some difficulty in adapting
JAWS to Firefox Quantum, but they are working on it. You could also use NVDA.
Really, nowadays it makes sense to have both screen-readers on your machine.

It doesn't sound like everybody is reporting this IE issue.

Still, it makes sense to accustom oneself to moving away from IE. I know it
has some decent features, but it's increasingly ineffective and unusable on
some websites. I don't know when security updates for it will stop ..
probably not til 2020 as that's when Windows 7 support ends ... but still.

Firefox 52 ESR is currently the thing to get if you are wanting to use FF
and JAWS. It works without any issues. There has been some difficulty in
adapting JAWS to Firefox Quantum, but they are working on it. You could also
use NVDA. Really, nowadays it makes sense to have both screen-readers on
your machine.

I understand the pain. But can you reinstall the scripts?

I believe there is some kind of NVDA add-on for goldwave already. I
downloaded it but haven't installed it yet. Check the add-ons page and
you'll see it. It might not be as good as the Goldwave scripts were, but if
JAWS keeps removing them, well...you know.

2018-02-22 Thread Mitch
Hello Inamuddin, I was hopeful that the latest 2018 update would solve the
Windows Mail troubles as well but was disappointed in the results as noted by
you and others.
With little to lose, I did a repair on this new version earlier today. The
repair took about 4 times longer than the initial successful install but since
doing this, the Windows 10 Mail program is almost working properly. On
occasion I have to unload and reload both JAWS and Windows Mail and, for some
reason, that seems to restore proper behavior on this Dell Desktop of recent
manufacture.
I would be interested if others with Windows 10 Mail issues find a repair of
the latest update results in improvement. Thanks, Mitch

What's new in this release:
Enhancements in JAWS 2018.1802.78 (February 2018)

The following is a list of improvements made in JAWS 2018 between the
December 2017 update and the February 2018 update.

To download the latest release, visit the
Downloads web page.

JAWS
list of 12 items
When you open an inaccessible PDF file in Adobe Reader which normally just
reports: "Empty Document", JAWS now displays a dialog box asking if you want
to perform OCR directly on the file. Choose Yes to have JAWS recognize the
image and display the text in the Results Viewer or choose No to close the
dialog
box without performing OCR. This is the same as using the layered command
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D to OCR a document. We are now proactively offering
this
for all JAWS and Fusion users when we recognize that scanned PDF files have
been opened in Acrobat Reader.
When you press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by QUESTION MARK for help with
layered commands, the list of keystrokes is now displayed in the Results
Viewer
to make them easier to review.
You can now press Right Shift+DOTS 1-2-3-7 from a Focus braille display to
toggle the JAWS Screen Shade feature.
The commands to read the next or previous word (CTRL+RIGHT ARROW and
CTRL+LEFT ARROW) will now continue to speak when Speech On Demand is active.
Note
that due to the way keystrokes are handled in Microsoft Office applications,
these commands will continue to remain silent in Word documents and when
editing
Outlook messages. In addition, speech is now available in Keyboard Help
(INSERT+1).
Resolved an issue with the INSERT+B command not reading the contents of
certain dialog boxes if Speech On Demand was enabled.
If Speech On Demand is active, resolved an issue where pressing
ALT+CTRL+NUM PAD 5 to read the current table cell was not working.
The Convenient OCR item located in the JAWS Utilities menu has been
renamed to OCR Options.
Resolved a customer reported issue with the Stock Quotes Research It
lookup source not returning results as expected.
Addressed an issue with the Convert Currency Research It lookup source in
the Spanish version of JAWS not returning any results.
When navigating the Outlook calendar in Month view, resolved a customer
reported issue where Vocalizer Expressive voices were saying "comma" before
each
date.
Resolved sluggishness issues with the Customize Outlook Message List
dialog box accessed from the Run JAWS Manager dialog box (INSERT+F2) while
focused
in an Outlook message folder.
Addressed JAWS visual highlighting issues in Windows 7 for a custom set of
Office scripts distributed by Papenmeier.

Hi.

What synthesizer are you using currently? Which synth did you download? I
believe Vocalizer Expressive 2.0 will not work with older JAWS version than
17, or maybe 18. So you must pick one of the other synths. You might have to
enable the synth in utilities, synthesizer manager under the JAWS menu, as
well.

Hey.

Yes, I signed up today. It wasn't so bad, though now that I'm all set, I'm a
bit overwhelmed by all the stuff on the main page. I'll figure it out
though. Yeah, those kind of drop-down boxes where you have to select
multiple items especially can be an issue. I didn't see one like that here,
but on the Government of Canada's job bank site, there was one which gave me
trouble. I actually much preferred signing up to Linkedin to joining that
Job Bank site, and all government stuff is supposed to be totally
accessible. Go figure.

The only thing that I'm not sure actaully worked was when I entered in the
name of my former employer company. It came up with two matches and I guess
I was supposed to select one. But when I tried, the company information just
disappeared from the screen. I have no idea. Hahaah well.

When I went to enter in my job information, some of the drop down boxes did
not work.
But I am using Internet explorer and an old windows, being a work pc, so
this may have been the issue rather than Jaws and Linked in.

Good luck though, just have a good play around with it, it really is much
better than it was 6 years ago when I first tried.

Hey everyone.

The time has come for me to join this service. Of course, I'll be conducting
my own investigations, starting today. I just wondered if anybody had
thoughts, observations, and so on, about this site "for professional social
networking. Any accessibility, usability, and so on - type concerns I should
beware of? I did look at the site some years ago and remember thinking it
was a bit messy. At the time I figured I really had no need for it. Well,
things have changed, so I'm going to have to get on-board whether I like it

When I went to enter in my job information, some of the drop down boxes did not
work.
But I am using Internet explorer and an old windows, being a work pc, so this
may have been the issue rather than Jaws and Linked in.

Good luck though, just have a good play around with it, it really is much
better than it was 6 years ago when I first tried.

I am able to edit my profile, access most of the drop down lists to update job

I think with a bit of playing around you will be just fine.

If you are using JAWS version 16, you must download Vocalizer Expressive
version 1. I know that you did not download version 1 because version 1 does
not have "voice packs", i.e. you will need to download each voice separately.

Hi.

What synthesizer are you using currently? Which synth did you download? I
believe Vocalizer Expressive 2.0 will not work with older JAWS version than 17,
or maybe 18. So you must pick one of the other synths. You might have to enable
the synth in utilities, synthesizer manager under the JAWS menu, as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS, ZoomText and Fusion question

2018-02-22 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Hi,

So far, I have not found this to be the case. I have given up on Fusion for
the time being, as it will not start up when I try to run it so it comes up at
the logon screen. I get a "Comm Initialization Error", which is supposed to to
be fixed in an update coming out next month.

For now, I am running JAWS and ZoomText separately. Even running it this way,
the latest ZoomText crashes on average twice a day. Sometimes I have to reboot
to get it started again, and sometimes I can just restart ZoomText. I am
hoping the next update will also fix this issue.

Do you have issues with ZoomText crashing? I am on Windows 7, 64-bit.

To download the latest release, visit the

When you open an inaccessible PDF file in Adobe Reader which normally just
reports: "Empty Document", JAWS now displays a dialog box asking if you want
to perform OCR directly on the file. Choose Yes to have JAWS recognize the
image and display the text in the Results Viewer or choose No to close the
dialog
box without performing OCR. This is the same as using the layered command
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D to OCR a document. We are now proactively offering

been opened in Acrobat Reader.
When you press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by QUESTION MARK for help with

You can now press Right Shift+DOTS 1-2-3-7 from a Focus braille display to
toggle the JAWS Screen Shade feature.
The commands to read the next or previous word (CTRL+RIGHT ARROW and
CTRL+LEFT ARROW) will now continue to speak when Speech On Demand is active.
Note
that due to the way keystrokes are handled in Microsoft Office applications,
these commands will continue to remain silent in Word documents and when

That's due to the fact that Freedom Scientific insists on bundling
FSReader,

its own daisy reader with its installations.

NFB Newsline, when it detects a Jaws screen-reader in use, won't let you
read daisy files in another program except to use FS Reader.

If you want to use your Outlook program to do it, you'll need to unload
Jaws

and use an alternate screen-reader.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] NFB Newsline and JAWS

Hi. Will someone who reads NFB Newsline attachments with JAWS give me
some

tips on how to do it?

Background. I've just upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2016. With
Office 2010, I made a file association between .XM> files and MS Word
in order to read one of the Newsline attachments. Not ideal, but
workable.

But this file association produces nothing readable with Word 2016.

I just re-tried opening the Newsline .OPf attachment with FS Reader 3.0.
This file extension allows me to open files from other sources with FS
Reader; however, still not those from NFB Newsline.

Any ideas?

i have experienced scripts being broken when upgrading to a new version, but
not when simply updating to a new build, but perhaps something in the new
build broke your scripts. This especially seems likely if the previous build

Re: [JAWS-Users] Magic and Jaws

2018-02-22 Thread Roger Newell
I believe there was a MAGic 10.5. I know that you need about JAWS 10
to work with MAGic 11, so working backwards, you would need a version
of JAWS prior to version 10. Considering that JAWS version 11 was the
first version to support Windows 7, I would hope that the client is
using Windows XP, but I would recommend that they consider upgrading.
If they are in the United States, they can try Computers for the Blind
which can be accessed at https://www.computersfortheblind.net/ If
Computers for the Blind is not a satisfactory solution, I would
suggest NVDA as a better option than using a version of JAWS produced
more than ten years ago.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Australian English voice pack for jaws

2018-02-22 Thread Roger Newell
If you are using JAWS version 16, you must download Vocalizer
Expressive version 1. I know that you did not download version 1
because version 1 does not have "voice packs", i.e. you will need to
download each voice separately.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox updates/accessibility

2018-02-22 Thread Mike B.
Howdy,

To turn off the password prompt thingy try the following:
You can stop being asked about saving passwords with a setting in Tools /
Options. Open Tools / Options and tab once. You are in a list. Then down
arrow to security. If you get stuck moving down, up arrow once, then start
down arrowing again. When you get to security, start tabbing. You will get
to a check box that says remember login information. Uncheck it with the
space bar. There is no ok button. Continue to use Firefox as usual.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.
Arguing with a woman is like reading a software license agreement. In the
end you have to ignore everything, & click I agree.

I've found, that when asked if you want to save your password, it tells you
to press the spacebar, then press alt plus n.
After doing that, you either press Y or N. That's what I did and do and it
works.
As far as stopping it from asking all the time, I never really checked into
it. Perhaps someone else on this list will know the answer to that.

Linked in and meet up.com are the only two sites for me speaking in another
language, even when I use different browsers. Does anyone no why?
