[JAWS-Users] Any tips on reading websites with text in graphics?
I have been running into web pages that seem to have the text of articles in a graphic format that I cannot get Jaws to read. I am using latest Jaws 2018 on a computer with latest Windows 10. Very frustrating. Any suggestions? For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] Twitter accessibility
Hello, If you want to use twitter from the web I would recommend using EasyChirp. It is an accessible online interface to twitter. It can be found at: www.easychirp.com/ <http://www.easychirp.com/> However most people use a twitter client on either their phone or PC to access it. There is Chicken Nugget, which is a paid client, and there is TWBlue which is free. But actually, for the average sighted computer user, they tend to pick one browser they like and they can do whatever they want on it. There's no jumping around and spending an hour going between three browsers with one website trying to see what will work so you can buy that one thing you want, when a sighted person is done in ten minutes. There needs to be some continuity here seems to me. The fact that, between, for example, VFO and Microsoft, half the time when there's some kind of update you are crossing your fingers hoping something won't be broken afterwards, is pretty maddening. The reply above yours from David there says "voiceover on the mac". At first I kind of scoffed at that. I'm not a mac user and probably never will be. But here's the thing. As PC users, I think we are given a variety of options and tools, and that's one of the great things about being a PC users. I used to access the web through Telnet and a linux shell. The only browser that would work was lynx and it couldn't display framed webpages properly. It was a really frustrating experience back then, for sure. Then, finally, we had Internet Explorer and netscape. Then, internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome. I think the idea of the web being an entirely universal experience is a nice dream, but still a dream. All you can do is try to make it as close to a universal experience as you can. That's actually harder and harder now with the number of connected devices out there. Often, it's Microsoft that won't play along. I think we'll probably see more and more people using Chrome, and that's probably a good thing. Just today I had to get it up and running again and it was nice to be reminded how fast and robust it really is. Are things complex? Yeah, definitely. But these browsers aren't so different from one another that we can't adapt. We just have to know what tool is appropriate for each job. If you're a carpenter, you probably won't get very far with just a single saw in your arsenal, you know? And rest assured, even though screen-readers do add a certain amount of complexity to things, sighted people have to deal with this too. Let's be glad we aren't system administrators (although maybe you are? I don't know)that opens a whole new can o' worms, when you've got a network of computers, all running different software and hardware, and your company expects you to get them all to play nice with each other. Now maybe it's just because I have more time on my hands this year than I used to, but 90% of the time, I enjoy the challenge and adding new tools to the arsenal, so to speak. The only thing that's really making me nervous sometimes is Windows 10 updating and screwing around with my settings and things. *grins* -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: February 23, 2018 5:03 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser I agree that it's necessary to have all three browsers installed, but this increasing complexity is a little nuts. People are suggesting that we should also have the two screenreaders, JAWS and NVDA, on board, which I do. But that means we may need to try six combinations before we can access certain websites. Then there's the question of which version of JAWS will work. To give an example, a certain website I use is accessible to IE11, but it moves painfully slowly after the log-in page. Chrome gets to this page right away, but later there's a critical page on this same website that Chrome can't even open. For a while, I was trying to access this website with Firefox, but Firefox couldn't locate the edit fields for the username and password fields, and so obviously I couldn't log in. Then, on a whim, I switched from JAWS 2018 and 18, which I already need to alternate between, to JAWS 17. Lo and behold, the edit fields appeared. After that, Firefox and JAWS 17 seem to move seamlessly through the entire website. This is a website that requires logging in to test, which is why I'm not posting the address. The amount of time and distraction involved for screenreader users in working on the Web lately is getting ludicrous. Maybe VFO's efforts to work with MS on Edge will

Eventually JAWS will speak again but you have to give it a some time before it does. Re: [JAWS-Users] Best browser to use with Jaws
Thanks for this feedback. It seems no one browser works best with latest Jaws in all situations. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Saturday, December 2, 2017 8:59 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Best browser to use with Jaws Theoretically, the three major browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) are fully compatible with JAWS, and now JAWS 2018 and 18 with latest updates are starting to provide Edje support. That last support is currently very unstable. Personally, despite the Firefox Quantum disaster that I hope Mozilla will fix soon, I find that the browser which offers, in conjunction, the best navigation experience with JAWS is Firefox. Chrome would be the second, but there are important Chrome issues handling edit boxes, especially on ritch text edit controls. The advantage of using IE is that it is the core used by JAWS support for virtual documents, so text selection and copying with Virtual PC cursor work better than in other browsers. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Greg Washington Sent: Saturday, December 2, 2017 10:42 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Best browser to use with Jaws I am a long time user of Internet Explorer and am currently using the latest version of IE with latest Windows 10. Mitch, Thanks. I went into properties for Jaws 2018 and deleted the hot key I had set. I then exited out of properties and then reopened it and set the hot key to control+alt+9. I then exited out of properties. The hot key worked then twice in a row afterI closed Jaws down. I shut down the computer and restarted it and the hot key still worked the first time I tried it. However, now that you say that the document is saved in Downloads, you may be opening the document with other program instead of Adobe's one by default. If you're sure to be using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Adobe Reader, perhaps the document was configured to display pages in a special way. In this case, in the View menu, find a sub menu related to pages view (not page navigation) and select Single Page View. I can't give you the exact sub menu name because I use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC in Spanish and, unlike Microsoft, Adobe hasn't a repository in which to find exact string equivalences and, although there's an option in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC preferences to change UI language, it seem that language packs are only available for enterprises or some kind of subscription. Regarding search in a PDF document, it is done in the way Adrian explained. However, since Adobe's products by default do not render the whole documents to screen readers to avoid excessive RAM and CPU usage, for this to work in the whole document, you first have to press CTRL+SHIFT+5 and, in the dialog which opens, tab to the group of radio buttons and select to read the entire document. When okaying this dialog, the document will start to prepare; when finished, the JAWS search feature will work for the whole document as if this would be a web page. Finally, in the Reading preferences category Brian indicated, you can change, Ammon others, the options which appear in the CTRL+SHIFT+5 dialog, but permanently for all documents. Unless you understand what you're doing, I would'nt recommend to change options here. I personally like to render documents one page at a time even when they're not big (by default documents with less than 50 pages are rendered entirely, and with 50 or more one page at a time; you can change the limit for this consideration as big or small, or turn this calculation completely off) and with single page view despite the one set in each document. I go directly to the amount due by searching for the $ dollar sign. If I want to read the transactions, I search for a portion of a date. For example, if the statement has a closing date in mid-September, I'll search for the two characters 9/ Since the most recent, and therefore top, transaction probably occurred in September. Naturally if 9/ doesn't work, I substitute 8/. Note. To search in a PDF document, press JAWS key+control+f. I realize this is a workaround, but perhaps it's helpful. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Greg Washington Sent: Saturday, September 09, 2017 8:19 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing pages in a pdf document Fernando, Thanks so much for responding. You might also go under the accessibility category of options and make sure "enable assistive technology support" is checked. Re: [JAWS-Users] Boy, Jarte is a great accessible word processor!
Hello, When using Jart you need to be aware that it does not allow you to navigate thru tables like you can in word. Tables will not be layed out like they are in word. This is due to the backend engine that Jart uses for its text. It uses the same engine as wordpad. In Jart you will not be able to use control plus alt plus the arrow keys to navigate tables. If you do not need to worry about this then yes Jart is a good alternative word processor to use. Regards, Greg Wocher On 5/24/2017 2:38 AM, Tim Ford wrote: Hi Andy, I owe you a great and hardy "Thank you" for telling us about Jarte! It is just what I always wanted, a nice easy word processor that is fully compatible with JAWS. It was easy to download and install. Folks will find it to have a very familiar feel, and it is easy to explore the menus and find all the features, everything I want, a few nice extras, but not as much of the wild stuff the Microsoft Word program has. It also has a nice regular old menu system. So for those who did not notice his post, please consider Jarte. I can already tell that I will use it a lot, perhaps as my default word processor. It is certainly the solution for those who have only WordPad. A post-installation note. When you first launch the program for the purpose of real work, watch for the following. When you first go to open your file list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list, you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format. Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter. Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet, and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files and folders are! I put in below the link to the Jarte web page that contains the description of features. On that same page is also the download link. The installation file you download is small, less than 4 mb. Installation was completely perfect and easy, both for accessibility and for clarity. The link is below, just past my name. Thanks again Andy! Hello, There is a trick to getting screen reader mode working. You can force Jarte to switch to screen reader mode by copying the phrase "enable screen reader mode" to the Windows clipboard before starting Jarte. This only needs to be done one time. This should do what you need. Re: [JAWS-Users] troubleshooting network connection
Hello, First in your system tray on the desktop is an indicator of your network. This indicator will tell you the status of your network. Usually if you hit enter on it it will take you to a dialog where you can see things like different wireless networks and whether or not your wifi is on. Sometimes I have noticed that my computer will turn on Airplane mode seemingly on its own. In this dialog make sure airplane mode is not on and your wifi is. Also somecomputers actually have a switch on the outside that turns the wifi on and off on the computer. This switch can be activated accidentally. Also some computers have a keystroke invoked with one of the function keys that will turn your wifi off and on. Hitting this combination may have turned off your wifi. Hopefully these will help the next time it happens. Regards, Greg Wocher > On Feb 27, 2017, at 7:10 AM, leonard morris <lmorris1...@gmail.com> wrote: > > I'm using windows 7 and Jaws v18. Thanks for this info. I guess I will continue to deal with Quicken 2003 for the time being unless someone knows of a better Jaws friendly checking account program. Hi In my opinion, the most accessible version of Quicken for Windows using JAWS was Quicken 2003. I have had to upgrade to a new version of Quicken every three years because I download some transactions, and you can only do that with any version for three years. I am currently using Quicken 2015. Every time I have upgraded quicken, I find the new version to be less accessible than the previous version. I have extensively modified the scripts for Quicken 2003 for each time I have upgraded. Although the modified scripts have been good enough for me, I don't consider them ready for public consumption. I believe that the BlindSpot effort with Intuit mainly focused on QuickBooks and not Quicken. Also, it's my understanding that Quicken has now split off from Intuit into its own company. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Greg Washington Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2017 03:12 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Is Quicken 2017 accessible with Jaws? I am frequently presented with accessibility challenges on their main site and often find that their supposedly screen reader optimized site suffers from the same accessibility challenges, making it hardly worth bothering with. I'm asking hoping some people have found ways, or scripts, or other tools that make amazon.com more accessible. I complain to them all the time about their accessibility problems and always get some boiler plate response that they take accessibility of their site seriously but nothing ever changes, or it just gets worse. Hello all, I am running into an issue with the new vocalizer voices. After installing the compact voices, Nathan does not appear to be installed. The only way I am able to get Nathan is by installing the premium version of the voice. I have also noticed that there is a problem with the Karen compact Austrailian voice. When I arrow to her in the list of voices she does not pronounce the K in her name. It ends up sounding like she is saying Aren instead of Karen. Also she seems to be having issues with the letter C as well. has anyone else noticed these issues? I have experienced these on two different laptops running Windows10. I hope it's what you're looking for. FORMATTING CELLS FOR SPECIFIC DATA: 1. Line up on the cell you want to format. 2. Press the Applications key and look for the Format option. 3. The display starts with Number and you tab to the settings. The next option is the type of data for that cell. It includes General, Numbers, Currency. If Currency is chosen, the next option is number of decimal points. Next is the choice of mark. I chose Dollar. 4. There's a Negative Number option which was skipped. 5. Finally, move to the Okay and press Enter. Once a cell has been formatted, you can copy that information, highlight the other cells in the column and press Control V which pastes the same formatting into the other cells in that column. If I set up a home group network between the two computers, which I also do not know how to do, would that make the process easier? Both computers are currently running latest Jaws 17. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Greg washington For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Windows Update has suddenly become unpredictable, and I also had an inexplicable experience with the character/word key echo feature. Regarding Mike's suggestion for Windows Update, mine is different, but I'd follow his recommendation. Regarding key echo, I found, as Maria posted, that I had to change the setting in the insert-v JAWS quick settings for every application I run. I also made the change Mike described in the insert-6 JAWS settings center, but although it may have confirmed my insert-v settings, it wasn't enough. I'd try to resolve these issues before returning your computer. I'd also keep in mind that the holiday weekend is upon us, so tomorrow will be the last day in four that FS will take you call. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Greg Washington Sent: Thursday, June 30, 2016 10:00 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] How to adjust keyboard options in latest Jaws 17 Mike, Very interesting. Re: [JAWS-Users] Touch vs non-touch screen notebook computer
Thanks for this info. I am not familiar with the Jaws touch cursor. I'll look into it. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Samuel Negron Sent: Thursday, April 28, 2016 5:09 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Touch vs non-touch screen notebook computer I use a Surface with the type keyboard. JAWS touch support is a little wonky. It, for example, is not as responsive or useful as Voiceover touch is, but it does make some tasks a little quicker to do, e.g. touching the bottom right of your screen to check the time. I'm actually surprised you can even find non-touch computers these days. Another issue I have with JAWS touch support is that, when I rely on it, I've noticed it crashes apps and programs somewhat frequently. In short, it's minimally useful for now, but has a ton of potential in the future, especially if you have something like a Surface.
