[JAWS-Users] Any tips on reading websites with text in graphics?

2018-07-18 Thread Greg Washington
I have been running into web pages that seem to have the text of articles in
a graphic format that I cannot get Jaws to read. I am using latest Jaws
2018 on a computer with latest Windows 10. Very frustrating. Any
suggestions?

Hello,
If you want to use twitter from the web I would recommend using EasyChirp. It
is an accessible online interface to twitter. It can be found at:
www.easychirp.com/ <http://www.easychirp.com/>
However most people use a twitter client on either their phone or PC to access
it. There is Chicken Nugget, which is a paid client, and there is TWBlue which
is free.

I agree that the level of frustration for me is getting pretty hard to take
some days. But actually, for the average sighted computer user, they tend to
pick one browser they like and they can do whatever they want on it. There's
no jumping around and spending an hour going between three browsers with one
website trying to see what will work so you can buy that one thing you want,
when a sighted person is done in ten minutes. There needs to be some
continuity here seems to me. Jmho Judy & Libby

I hear you; sometimes I definitely feel the same. The fact that, between,
for example, VFO and Microsoft, half the time when there's some kind of
update you are crossing your fingers hoping something won't be broken
afterwards, is pretty maddening.

The reply above yours from David there says "voiceover on the mac". At first
I kind of scoffed at that. I'm not a mac user and probably never will be.
But here's the thing. As PC users, I think we are given a variety of options
and tools, and that's one of the great things about being a PC users. I used
to access the web through Telnet and a linux shell. The only browser that
would work was lynx and it couldn't display framed webpages properly. It was
a really frustrating experience back then, for sure. Then, finally, we had
Internet Explorer and netscape. Then, internet Explorer, Firefox, and
Chrome. I think the idea of the web being an entirely universal experience
is a nice dream, but still a dream. All you can do is try to make it as
close to a universal experience as you can. That's actually harder and
harder now with the number of connected devices out there. Often, it's
Microsoft that won't play along. I think we'll probably see more and more
people using Chrome, and that's probably a good thing. Just today I had to
get it up and running again and it was nice to be reminded how fast and
robust it really is. Are things complex? Yeah, definitely. But these
browsers aren't so different from one another that we can't adapt. We just
have to know what tool is appropriate for each job. If you're a carpenter,
you probably won't get very far with just a single saw in your arsenal, you
know? And rest assured, even though screen-readers do add a certain amount
of complexity to things, sighted people have to deal with this too. Let's be
glad we aren't system administrators (although maybe you are? I don't
know)that opens a whole new can o' worms, when you've got a network of
computers, all running different software and hardware, and your company
expects you to get them all to play nice with each other.

Now maybe it's just because I have more time on my hands this year than I
used to, but 90% of the time, I enjoy the challenge and adding new tools to
the arsenal, so to speak. The only thing that's really making me nervous
sometimes is Windows 10 updating and screwing around with my settings and
things. *grins*

I agree that it's necessary to have all three browsers installed, but this
increasing complexity is a little nuts. People are suggesting that we should
also have the two screenreaders, JAWS and NVDA, on board, which I do. But
that means we may need to try six combinations before we can access certain
websites. Then there's the question of which version of JAWS will work.

To give an example, a certain website I use is accessible to IE11, but it
moves painfully slowly after the log-in page. Chrome gets to this page right
away, but later there's a critical page on this same website that Chrome
can't even open.

For a while, I was trying to access this website with Firefox, but Firefox
couldn't locate the edit fields for the username and password fields, and so
obviously I couldn't log in. Then, on a whim, I switched from JAWS 2018 and
18, which I already need to alternate between, to JAWS 17. Lo and behold,
the edit fields appeared. After that, Firefox and JAWS 17 seem to move
seamlessly through the entire website.

This is a website that requires logging in to test, which is why I'm not
posting the address.

The amount of time and distraction involved for screenreader users in
working on the Web lately is getting ludicrous. Maybe VFO's efforts to work

Greg,

Nope. 2007 is exactly the same. You still need to tab around a lot and if
you invoke a second sort column using the Add sort button, you need to use
the JAWS cursor to find that combo box to get things moving on that column.

Instructions

You need to select all of your data, including the column headings.

You are now in a dialog box which JAWS does not read well. Use the tab key

for the columns of data, or if it is actual data. If you have column
headings, make sure it is checked.

--Tab until you get to a combo box, or maybe it is a list box, for which

reading the contents.

--There are 2 more combo/list boxes that allow you to set information about
sorting on this column I.E. A-Z, Z-A, ascending, descending, etc. Depending
on what you want your sort to look like, you may not need to deal with this.

Again, JAWS is not always cooperative with reading this information.

--There should be another set of 3 combo/list boxes that will allow you to
select the second column you want to use for your sort, as well as its

it.

Hello,
It sounds like your computer is trying to do an update and that is why you
won’t hear JAWS after you either restart or shut it down and then turn it on
again. Eventually JAWS will speak again but you have to give it a some time
before it does. To see those notifications dow a windows key plus A and you
will land in the notifications area where you can tab around to the different
notifications.

Hi All,

An update for Jaws 18 was released today as well. Below are the download
links + what's new in this release, which isn't much of an update:

Enhancements in JAWS 18.0.4534 (December 2017)
This update addresses a couple issues that were discovered shortly after the

release of the December 2017 update.

list of 2 items
. Resolved an issue where the Password field on the Windows 10 logon screen
was being announced multiple times.
. Addressed an issue where JAWS was speaking on the login screen even when
configured not to start at logon.

He may be able to resubmit that tutorial. If not I have a copy of it and will

Theoretically, the three major browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) are fully
compatible with JAWS, and now JAWS 2018 and 18 with latest updates are starting
to provide Edje support. That last support is currently very unstable.
Personally, despite the Firefox Quantum disaster that I hope Mozilla will fix
soon, I find that the browser which offers, in conjunction, the best navigation
experience with JAWS is Firefox. Chrome would be the second, but there are
important Chrome issues handling edit boxes, especially on ritch text edit
controls. The advantage of using IE is that it is the core used by JAWS support
for virtual documents, so text selection and copying with Virtual PC cursor
work better than in other browsers.

Hi Greg,
That happens with me on windows7 and windows10 as well.
What I do if the hotkey doesn't work is hitting windows key plus R,
Then I type "jaws2018" and hit inter, and jaws would start.
That applies with older versions of jaws like type jaws18 or jaws17,
just make sure no spaces between jaws and the version number.
hope it helps.

Thanks. I went into properties for Jaws 2018 and deleted the hot key I had

key to control+alt+9. I then exited out of properties. The hot key worked
then twice in a row afterI closed Jaws down. I shut down the computer and
restarted it and the hot key still worked the first time I tried it. Let's
hope this fixed that problem.

Fred
I think you're kind of stuck. Quicken changed its file format from .QIF to
.QFX around 2004 or 2005. Below is a link to Quicken that explains the
conversion but it doesn't work with Windows 10.

https://www.quicken.com/support/how-and-when-use-intermediate-version-conver
t-older-versions-quicken

You can do a Google search on 'QIF to QFX Converters' and you will find
several companies that offer converters in about the $40 range. Or, if you
can find a Windows 7 or8 computer, make the conversion per Quicken, and then
transfer the QFX file to your current computer. Or, you could download your
checking account from as far back as your bank allows and use Quicken 2015
on a going forward basis. Choose your medicine.

Sorry I couldn't be more up-beat.

Take care,
Russ

import my 2003 data file or in another help window it says I can immediately
use my 2004 data file in my Quicken 2015 program. Which is it?

Has anyone had experience in upgrading from Quicken 2003 or earlier to
Quicken 2015? if so what worked for you? Also it seems like installing
Quicken 2015 has made my Quicken 2003 inoperable. What a mess!

Any help/advice would be appreciated. I'm thinking about uninstalling

Jaws 17 but not with Jaws 18.

For single page view in the American English version, make sure you're in
the Adobe/Acrobat window, press alt-v for view, then arrow down to "Page

Actually, if your menu is like mine, you will land on the "single page

Hi Greg,

When you early said that the hotkeys I mentioned didn't work for you, I
thought that you were viewing the document directly in the web browser.
However, now that you say that the document is saved in Downloads, you may
be opening the document with other program instead of Adobe's one by
default.
If you're sure to be using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Adobe Reader, perhaps
the document was configured to display pages in a special way. In this case,
in the View menu, find a sub menu related to pages view (not page
navigation) and select Single Page View. I can't give you the exact sub menu
name because I use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC in Spanish and, unlike Microsoft,
Adobe hasn't a repository in which to find exact string equivalences and,
although there's an option in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC preferences to change
UI language, it seem that language packs are only available for enterprises
or some kind of subscription.
Regarding search in a PDF document, it is done in the way Adrian explained.
However, since Adobe's products by default do not render the whole documents
to screen readers to avoid excessive RAM and CPU usage, for this to work in
the whole document, you first have to press CTRL+SHIFT+5 and, in the dialog
which opens, tab to the group of radio buttons and select to read the entire
document. When okaying this dialog, the document will start to prepare; when
finished, the JAWS search feature will work for the whole document as if
this would be a web page.
Finally, in the Reading preferences category Brian indicated, you can
change, Ammon others, the options which appear in the CTRL+SHIFT+5 dialog,
but permanently for all documents. Unless you understand what you're doing,
I would'nt recommend to change options here. I personally like to render
documents one page at a time even when they're not big (by default documents
with less than 50 pages are rendered entirely, and with 50 or more one page
at a time; you can change the limit for this consideration as big or small,
or turn this calculation completely off) and with single page view despite
the one set in each document.

Hope it helps somewhat.

Fernando and Greg,

For single page view in the American English version, make sure you're in the
Adobe/Acrobat window, press alt-v for view, then arrow down to "Page display
submenu." Press enter and arrow down to "single page view." Actually, if your
menu is like mine, you will land on the "single page view" option on opening
this submenu. Press enter.

Hi Greg,

When you early said that the hotkeys I mentioned didn't work for you, I thought
that you were viewing the document directly in the web browser. However, now
that you say that the document is saved in Downloads, you may be opening the
document with other program instead of Adobe's one by default.
If you're sure to be using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Adobe Reader, perhaps the
document was configured to display pages in a special way. In this case, in the
View menu, find a sub menu related to pages view (not page navigation) and
select Single Page View. I can't give you the exact sub menu name because I use
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC in Spanish and, unlike Microsoft, Adobe hasn't a
repository in which to find exact string equivalences and, although there's an
option in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC preferences to change UI language, it seem
that language packs are only available for enterprises or some kind of
subscription.
Regarding search in a PDF document, it is done in the way Adrian explained.
However, since Adobe's products by default do not render the whole documents to
screen readers to avoid excessive RAM and CPU usage, for this to work in the
whole document, you first have to press CTRL+SHIFT+5 and, in the dialog which
opens, tab to the group of radio buttons and select to read the entire
document. When okaying this dialog, the document will start to prepare; when
finished, the JAWS search feature will work for the whole document as if this
would be a web page.
Finally, in the Reading preferences category Brian indicated, you can change,
Ammon others, the options which appear in the CTRL+SHIFT+5 dialog, but
permanently for all documents. Unless you understand what you're doing, I
would'nt recommend to change options here. I personally like to render
documents one page at a time even when they're not big (by default documents
with less than 50 pages are rendered entirely, and with 50 or more one page at
a time; you can change the limit for this consideration as big or small, or
turn this calculation completely off) and with single page view despite the one
set in each document.

Hope it helps somewhat.

Try saving the PDF document to your hard drive, into your downloads folder, and

Hello Greg,

You might want to check preferences by using CTRL K. Pick the Reading category
from the list of categories. When you tab a few times you will find "page VS
document" and make sure it is set to "Read entire document." You might also go
under the accessibility category of options and make sure "enable assistive
technology support" is checked. If you make changes in the preferences you
should probably close the program and open it again.

Take care.

Greg,

I'm sure you're right. To the extent I understand anything about PDF files,
they need to be properly tagged. What I do in order to get the information I
need from untagged financial statements is to figure out what exactly that
is. Typically, it's the amount due and the list of transactions, if any. I
go directly to the amount due by searching for the $ dollar sign.

If I want to read the transactions, I search for a portion of a date. For
example, if the statement has a closing date in mid-September, I'll search
for the two characters
9/
Since the most recent, and therefore top, transaction probably occurred in
September. Naturally if 9/ doesn't work, I substitute 8/.

Note. To search in a PDF document, press JAWS key+control+f.

I realize this is a workaround, but perhaps it's helpful.

Tom,

Try one method for creating links and another for clicking on links, as
follows:

When adding a link to a message, be sure to press the return key right after
the link's last character. I believe Miriam made this suggestion yesterday,
and I've been doing it for a long time. Links are not shown as links without
the return character at the end.

When trying to open a link, right-arrow over the link's first character
before pressing enter. I've found that Outlook fluctuates between this extra
step being needed and not needed, though why it should be is beyond me.

Separately, I'd be interested to know if Fernando's suggestion works for
you. I hope you'll post the result.

Control, alt, + page up or down for temporary changes.

Control, alt, windows key, + page up or down for permanent changes.

To change voice rate temporarily while JAWS is in "say all," adjust speed
with pageup or pagedown alone.

Get one with a separate numpad, which means a 15-inch display. Get one off

Hello,
I am looking for opinions about laptop brands. I know there isn't one
perfect answer to this but I do value the opinions and experiences of
others. I want to purchase a Windows 10 laptop. Here are my
questions;
1. Which brand would you recommend? Why?
2. What brand would you totally avoid? Why??
3. Since I use Jaws, would it be better to purchase a system off the
shelf or have one custom built? I have had them custom built before
because I didn't want all of the games and extra unaccessible programs
taking up space.

These will do for a start.
Thanks for your input!

To get to the tool bar in Chrome use the F6 key. You might have to hit it a
couple of times. F6 will cycle you from the web page to the address bar and the
other tool bars if there are any. You can also try activating the touch cursor
in JAWS and finding the tool bar that way.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Boy, Jarte is a great accessible word processor!

2017-05-24 Thread Greg Wocher

Hello,

When using Jart you need to be aware that it does not allow you to
navigate thru tables like you can in word. Tables will not be layed out
like they are in word. This is due to the backend engine that Jart uses
for its text. It uses the same engine as wordpad. In Jart you will not
be able to use control plus alt plus the arrow keys to navigate tables.
If you do not need to worry about this then yes Jart is a good
alternative word processor to use.

Hi Andy,

I owe you a great and hardy "Thank you" for telling us about Jarte! It is
just what I always wanted, a nice easy word processor that is fully
compatible with JAWS. It was easy to download and install. Folks will find
it to have a very familiar feel, and it is easy to explore the menus and
find all the features, everything I want, a few nice extras, but not as much
of the wild stuff the Microsoft Word program has. It also has a nice
regular old menu system.

So for those who did not notice his post, please consider Jarte. I can
already tell that I will use it a lot, perhaps as my default word processor.
It is certainly the solution for those who have only WordPad.

A post-installation note. When you first launch the program for the purpose
of real work, watch for the following. When you first go to open your file
list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By
default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list,
you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format.

Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want
to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the
all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter.
Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all
folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your
list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of
folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there
is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet,
and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type
box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files
and folders are!

I put in below the link to the Jarte web page that contains the description
of features. On that same page is also the download link. The installation
file you download is small, less than 4 mb. Installation was completely
perfect and easy, both for accessibility and for clarity.

The link is below, just past my name. Thanks again Andy!

You have to enable "Install Apps from Anywhere."

Press [Windows key]+[i]. Hit the [Tab] key once. Now [Right Arrow]
until you hear "Apps" then hit [Enter]. You're now in the "Apps and
Features" treeview option, so simply [Tab] twice to "Choose where you
can get apps from" and use the arrow keys to select "Install Apps
from Anywhere."

Now JAWS doesn't seem to read the options in this listbox at all, so
you will need to [Arrow down or up] one time to change options, [Tab]
once and then [Shift]+[Tab] once to hear your selection. The JAWS
[Insert]+[Tab] key for reading the listbox selection once changed
doesn't work for me.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] troubleshooting network connection

2017-02-27 Thread Greg Wocher
Hello,
First in your system tray on the desktop is an indicator of your network. This
indicator will tell you the status of your network. Usually if you hit enter on
it it will take you to a dialog where you can see things like different
wireless networks and whether or not your wifi is on. Sometimes I have noticed
that my computer will turn on Airplane mode seemingly on its own. In this
dialog make sure airplane mode is not on and your wifi is. Also somecomputers
actually have a switch on the outside that turns the wifi on and off on the
computer. This switch can be activated accidentally. Also some computers have a
keystroke invoked with one of the function keys that will turn your wifi off
and on. Hitting this combination may have turned off your wifi. Hopefully these
will help the next time it happens.

Hi

In my opinion, the most accessible version of Quicken for Windows using JAWS
was Quicken 2003. I have had to upgrade to a new version of Quicken every
three years because I download some transactions, and you can only do that
with any version for three years. I am currently using Quicken 2015. Every
time I have upgraded quicken, I find the new version to be less accessible
than the previous version. I have extensively modified the scripts for
Quicken 2003 for each time I have upgraded. Although the modified scripts
have been good enough for me, I don't consider them ready for public
consumption.

I believe that the BlindSpot effort with Intuit mainly focused on QuickBooks
and not Quicken. Also, it's my understanding that Quicken has now split off
from Intuit into its own company.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Is Quicken 2017 accessible with Jaws?

2017-02-13 Thread Greg Washington
David,
Thanks. I did just uninstall Quicken 2003 yesterday and then reinstalled it
on my Windows 10 machine. It seems to be working OK but I get that user
account popup now whenever I open it. I click on yes and it seems to be
working OK. Jaws 17 works OK on it but Jaws 18 does not.

I have Quicken 2003, and the most successful version of JAWS is 15. They
changed something in JAWS 16 and above to work with newer versions of
Quicken so whenever I need to I revert back to 15 to do my banking. Note: I
have not installed 2003 on a 32 bit version of windows beyond 7, but I can
tell you for sure 2003 will not install on a 64 bit system at all
unfortunately.

Some time as a test I plan on installing it on 32 bit windows 10, it just
hasn't happened yet.

[JAWS-Users] Amazon.com

2017-01-08 Thread Greg Wocher
Hello,
What kinds of issues are you having? I shop with Amazon all the time with out
any real difficulties. The only issues I have really had are with leaving
reviews. I did just about all of my holiday shopping here. I use JAWS18 with
either the latest version of Firefox or Google Chrome.

Regards,
Greg WocherHi everyone!

Does anyone else here shop at amazon.com? I am frequently presented with
accessibility challenges on their main site and often find that their
supposedly screen reader optimized site suffers from the same accessibility
challenges, making it hardly worth bothering with.

I'm asking hoping some people have found ways, or scripts, or other tools that
make amazon.com more accessible.

I complain to them all the time about their accessibility problems and always
get some boiler plate response that they take accessibility of their site
seriously but nothing ever changes, or it just gets worse.

Cheers!

For the most part, I can only give you information regarding programs
relating to financial programs i.e., Quicken, etc. These programs are really
finicky, and once installed on a computer, the programs themselves cannot be
transferred. However, if you have the program disc, you can save your backup
files to a flash drive and place those on your new pc. Sorry if I am

[JAWS-Users] Problem with new Vocalizer voices

2016-10-28 Thread Greg Wocher

Hello all,

I am running into an issue with the new vocalizer voices. After
installing the compact voices, Nathan does not appear to be installed.
The only way I am able to get Nathan is by installing the premium
version of the voice. I have also noticed that there is a problem with
the Karen compact Austrailian voice. When I arrow to her in the list of
voices she does not pronounce the K in her name. It ends up sounding
like she is saying Aren instead of Karen. Also she seems to be having
issues with the letter C as well. has anyone else noticed these issues?
I have experienced these on two different laptops running Windows10.

Regards,

Greg Wocher

It seems that several popular anti-virus programs use this same program

Hi Greg,
I got these notes from a class I took about Excel at Hadley Institute. I
hope it's what you're looking for.

FORMATTING CELLS FOR SPECIFIC DATA:
1. Line up on the cell you want to format.
2. Press the Applications key and look for the Format option.
3. The display starts with Number and you tab to the settings.
The next option is the type of data for that cell. It includes General,
Numbers, Currency.
If Currency is chosen, the next option is number of decimal points.
Next is the choice of mark. I chose Dollar.
4. There's a Negative Number option which was skipped.
5. Finally, move to the Okay and press Enter.
Once a cell has been formatted, you can copy that information, highlight the
other cells in the column and press Control V which pastes the same
formatting into the other cells in that column.

David,

I have seen many responses to your earlier message and wanted to add my own.
Every time I have a Jaws issue, I try to find the answer here. This is a
good list and a very helpful one.

I'm sure that you are getting tired of it after all of these years but don't
give up on us, David. I, for one, need a resource for serious helpful
information about Jaws.

Finally, perhaps one explanation of why the list is quiet is that Jaws is
behaving itself for the most part. However, Jaws 18 is coming and if
Freedom runs true to form, there are bound to be glitches, bugs and errors
which will require correction. Hang in there, David.

Shift plus control plus f works too. You can format cells individually.
You can also use the applications key to format cells.
Are you wanting to format an entire worksheet? I have no answer for that
one.

When down arrowing, one would suspect that the next network would be

Let me reinforce what both Mike and Maria have said. Windows Update has
suddenly become unpredictable, and I also had an inexplicable experience
with the character/word key echo feature. Regarding Mike's suggestion for
Windows Update, mine is different, but I'd follow his recommendation.
Regarding key echo, I found, as Maria posted, that I had to change the
setting in the insert-v JAWS quick settings for every application I run. I
also made the change Mike described in the insert-6 JAWS settings center,
but although it may have confirmed my insert-v settings, it wasn't enough.

I'd try to resolve these issues before returning your computer. I'd also
keep in mind that the holiday weekend is upon us, so tomorrow will be the
last day in four that FS will take you call.

This same thing happened to me on a reinstall of Windows 7 just the other

let me choose whether to install them, & let the computer just sit there &

Something else you might try is using quick settings with insert v,
going to editing options and choosing character echo. You'd have to do
this with each program if it works.

Hi,
You can learn a lot about the touch cursor on the FS web site in the free
webinars that were done on Windows 8.1. Navigating apps and using the touch
cursor is really explained well in these webinars. Basically, you turn it on

by pressing Shift+numb pad + or Shift+Caps lock+Semi colon, with the laptop
keyboard layout turned on in the JAWS basic dialog. When it is on, right
arrow is like swiping right with your finger, and the left arrow is like
swiping left. The up and down arrow, is like swiping up or down. Take care.

Hi,
That is what I would do. You can use the JAWS touch cursor if you have a
touch screen or not, so you can navigate the universal apps with the JAWS
touch cursor right from the keyboard. Good luck on finding your new
notebook.

Huh?

Whether you want touch or not, I have one here from HP and I dooubt it adds
much to the weight. Some of the gestures do enhance the convenience.

Hello,

I am also looking for a new laptop. I have decided that I don't really
want/need a touch screen, they add a lot of weight and are more expensive.
So, I'm going for a non-touch screen model.

should I look for one with a non-touch screen?

I use a Surface with the type keyboard. JAWS touch support is a little
wonky. It, for example, is not as responsive or useful as Voiceover touch
is, but it does make some tasks a little quicker to do, e.g. touching the
bottom right of your screen to check the time. I'm actually surprised you
can even find non-touch computers these days.

Another issue I have with JAWS touch support is that, when I rely on it,
I've noticed it crashes apps and programs somewhat frequently. In short,
it's minimally useful for now, but has a ton of potential in the future,
especially if you have something like a Surface.
