Sorry for not replying. All my KR mail is going to spam again.  Life is upside
down with covid, my wife leaving me and my handyman company running me to the
ground. When I get back to reality my plan is to move my wings to the basement
and finish them. I know my plane won't make this years gathering. Maybe next
year.Paul ViskSent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

My EAA Chapter 64 located at KCPS soon to be moving to 1IL4 with it's own
hanger and soon to be built club house Metro East of St Louis has a set of
scales that I used when everyone came over. They were once race car scales. We
just recently got them certified. That was not needed though it's just nice to
know that they are accurate.

Paul ViskBelleville Il.618-406-4705

EAA 32 in St. Louis MO has a set of digital scales.  It has 4 scales that
weigh to the .1 of a pound.  Works great and anyone in the Chapter can use
them for free.

Re: KR> Rotary crimper

2018-11-25 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
Dan, You are right. This crimpers would not be the one that you would use for a
standard aviation terminal connectors. This tool could be used for avionics
connectors as in DSUB Machine pins.  A common connector that is used for making
wire harnesses are Molex connectors. You would need to use a crimper
specialized in that type of connector. A good source for education in this
subject would be EAA's Builders support videos or steinair has a lot of videos.
At the KR Gathering. One of the things we look at while judging is the use of
aviation grade wire terminals and proper installation. Per AC 43.13-1BPaul
ViskBelleville Il.618-406-4705
Paul,This crimper is not what I would use. For one thing, the thickness of the
ferrule crimped onto the wire is very thin. If you crimp something, you want it
to really crush the wires and the crimped metal around it together, providing
what is, in essence, a connection that becomes one solid piece, with no air
between the wires.

Are there specific nuts and bolts that should be used or are standard AN bolts

Brian,  I get it all the time also.  Wife's, theyjust don't understand the
importance of what we are doing. 😁

Paul ViskBelleville Il.618-406-4705

Powder coating is much better and will never come off or scratch, but is
expensive.  Fortunately for me my neighbor is friends with the guy that owns
our local powder coat shop.
As Larry said, rattle can paint can work good also.  When I paint metal parts I
use engine enamel in a spray can and I bake it on after it is dry which really
toughens it up.  Wife got mad when she caught me using the kitchen oven and
making the house smell and literally drug the oven out the front door so now I
use a heat gun or at least make sure she won't be home before the smell goes
away.

Re: KR> It is alive!

2018-09-17 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
I had the same issue that my engine would not start. When I installed it on my
airplane.  It ran great at a Corvair College.  I had a big get-together with my
EAA chapter and Mark L and Larry F flew in for the event of my first engine
run mounted on my KR..  My condenser is mounted on the shelf next to my coil
and it was not grounded. Mark said that should be grounded.  Who would know.  I
grounded the condenser and boom it started right up. I had five guys come over
and together we did my initial weight and balance to figure out if we had to
move the engine.  It came out perfect.  It's great that we can all get together
pass ideas work through problems and come out at the end with a flying machine.
Life is good.
Paul Visk Belleville Il. 618-406-4705
 Original message -
So after several weeks of frustration and not being able to figure out why
our corvair powered kr2 would not start I finally got it figured out! And
now the engine starts and seems to run just fine.

Apparently there are multiple things that can prevent an engine from
starting... But not grounding the distributor is a big one... I had checked
that the distributor was grounded statically but apparently without a
direct wire to ground the distributor it will lose significant strength
dynamically. Without that ground the engine will appear to have spark and
will think about running but will never actually start!

I was doing some research and how to update Mark's Jones information on Zee
map. We had the same problem with  updating Jeff Scott's info.  We do not know
who the owner of the map is.  I found something interesting as I went to the
company. This is no longer a free service. After 100 visits the map locks up
unless we pay for it.  I'm rather perturbed when companies do this.  So, if
anyone would like to take the challenge of finding a new  map provider  that
would be great. Taking one last look at the map.  You can definitely see why Mt
Vernon is the best location for gatherings.

KR> Gathering update: We are looking for one more judge

We are looking for one more judge.  If you are interested send me an email.  We
follow the guidelines of the EAA Home Built Judges Standers. If you are not
flying in or you are willing to not be judged (other then peoples choice) You
can be a judge.  You should possess a sound background in amateur built
aircraft construction.  Below is the link to the EAA Judging Standards Manual.

https://www.eaa.org/~/media/files/airventure/about/awards/2017-eaa-judging-standards-final.pdf
Again this year Aircraft Spruce is providing $100 gift certificates for best

KR> After the Gathering

2018-08-31 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
If you didn't have enough how about some more .I was trying to figure out a
time to do an initial weight and balance to figure out the  exact placement of
my Corvair engine. After talking to Larry Flesner.  I called Mark Langford and
we came up with an idea of whoever wanted to fly or drive over Sunday morning
for a couple hours to get some hands on an actual weight and balance of a KR
that can carry a 6'4" pilot and and hopefully a passenger. I would like to have
you over.  The airport is  2IL7. 70 mile west of Mt. Vernon.  Larry knows the
airport very well. He drives past it every week. I think it'd be a hoot to have
15 airplanes fly into that airport.

Ok,  If you want, they can cut your tank covers to exact measurements.  They
have a 10 ft share.  I would order by phone and call in late in the afternoon
(3:30)and ask for Keith.  They would then give you the leftovers.

basement compartment.  Will drive the wife's car home and fly the KR back to
the Gathering.  Guess I need to order that stuff next week.

Thanks for the reminder,

I wish FBOs at airports would just sell ethanol-free auto gas.  Then people
could use it with confidence or blend it with 100 LL to get whatever lead

Re: KR> vinyl ester thinning

2018-07-20 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
If you want to thin vinyl Ester resin or epoxy resin.  You need to use MEK (
methyl ethyl ketone). Both Lowe's and Home Depot has and 1 gallon cans.  Ace
Hardware sells it in 1 quart cans.  MEK is a very good all-around cleaner also.
One thing about MEK.  California has determined that it causes cancer. You can
use the substitute if that's all you can find but it will take longer to cure.
I had a few pin holes in my wing tank and ended up getting to the outside of
the leak. I put the tank under a small vacuum and sucked the resin in from the
outside and then flux the outside.

Paul ViskBelleville Il.618-406-4705
 Original message
Not sure if you have worked with VE resin before, but it is already
pretty much water thin.  I can't imagine wanting to thin it any more.
That is one of the reasons I don't like to work with it unless you are
doing it in a mold because it is so thin it does not do a good job
filling in the holes in the weave of the cloth where a thicker resin
bridges the gaps better.

If I was wanting to "slosh" with vinyl ester how to thin it?
acetone?

There are no regs that spells out requirements for an amateur built motor
glider.  Just check that box when you register the aircraft.  You will need
a sign off  to operate a self launch glider and a PVT-G rating to carry a
passenger.
This would be a great loophole for all those too heavy ultralights.

I was planning on building one of these 25 years ago and fly around
the world like Colin. The reason was great MPG and huge potential fuel
capacity.  My first email address starts with KR!B as a matter of
fact.

As to using it as a no medical motor glider, I am not sure that it
meets all the requirements, and I think I even brought that topic up
on here a while back.

most important being local support.  Most other things are just

the mains and the nose are different with everyone.  I wonder if there's a

I'm keeping it simple.  I am using window sash latches like Joe Horton. The
emergency release will be a device tied into the canopy hingepin which will be

I am wondering if anyone has a template or dimensions that I should cut the
Grumman gear legs down to for my Kr2.
The original weight of C-GSJS was just over 400 lbs. I don't want to make these
new legs ( removed the original retracts) too stiff but sure don't want them to
fail.
I will also be adding tubing for the brake lines as per the archives emails.
I will have to check the measurements but I think 1 inch thick and quite wide.

Travis,  you need to be very careful when you buy a EAB.  I have a friend in my

As a reminder this year's Gathering we will have Tim Hoversten from EAA

What in particular should I be on the lookout for during the pre-buy? The

Look for good glue joints, well finished glass work, reasonably neat wiring,
and good function of the controls.  Check the W&B and check out the engine.
What you really want to do is open the plane up as if you were doing an annual
inspection and look over everything you can.  If you don't know what you are
looking at, it's worth your money to take someone along that does.

It would take a bit of surgery, but yes, you could remove the gull wing type
canopy and door and replace with a full canopy.  You will need to build the
canopy frame and install probably a dragonfly canopy plexiglass.  It can be
done if that's what you really desire.

What you wrote is correct.  Biennial has a single definition meaning

Larry, You didn't mention that the other airplanes that you caught up to
without breaking a sweat were a bunch of RV's 😉

I know the feeling that you're talking about when a highway patrolman passes
you.  As a heavy haul trucker. I have pulled over dimensional Freight all over
the country. The maximum width is 102" in all states. It was 96"  back when
some of us were still in diapers. There are a couple exceptions for certain
commodities. As in round hay bales and farm equipment in certain states.
Maximum height is 13 ft 6 in east of the Mississippi. 14 feet west of the
Mississippi. With Ohio and Minnesota being the exceptions.  When I haul my
airplane to the airport.  I already have my route planned. As in  back roads.

KR> Landing gear

2018-05-29 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
My main gear wheels are just outside the wing attach mounts.  I forgot to take
in account the wheel fairings so to be able to trailer the airplane legally I
would have to take the fairings off cuz the maximum width that you can be
without a permit is 8' 6".  Another thing I'm worrying about being that the
gear mounts or so far out from center is that on a hard landing the center spar
would snap in half.

Re: KR> Zinc phosphate

2018-05-29 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
Zinc phosphate is fine.  I guess they don't make zinc chromate anymore because
in one of our great States it causes cancer.Just remember zinc phosphate is not
meant to be used as the undercoat.

I am wondering if anyone has used zinc phosphate instead of zinc chromate for
primer on parts .
Any thoughts are welcome.

As a reminder.  Dynon is one of the sponsor's for the Gathering.  They are
providing  two $150 gift certificates that will be drawn for.

Vacuum source in the Revmaster engine
Luis,

I am flying the Revmaster, but I do not use a vacuum drive instrument. I do
have a Dynon D6. A good solution for sure. Like John mentioned, check for room
before you install, mine is tight but worked out.

Thanks,
