[lace] Sad news

2015-10-27 Thread scotlace
I have to report the death of Glenna Paynter lacemaker and tutor in Abergavenny
and for Lace at The Hill College, also Abergavenny. That's in Wales, for non
UK members. As yet we have no more details.

I know there are people on Arachne who spent lovely weekends at The Hill before
it was closed down.

[lace-chat] maths question from a non mathematician

2015-10-01 Thread scotlace
This has nothing to do with lace but I've seen this question answered before -
when I didn't need the info. I have a magazine with patterns printed at 50%

pattern size?

Thank you.

2015-10-01 Thread scotlace
 Thank you Lynne

That makes sense to me. An answer many years ago used a formula which I didn't
understand. I'm going to save your answer for future reference.

Patricia

The 50% has to be doubled (200%) The 75% has to be at 133% (I think) There
should be a formula for it, but I don't know what it is.

Clearly the 50% is
half of what you want. The 75% needs to be increased by 1/3 of 75% in order for
it to get to 100% lrb

Re: [lace-chat] maths question from a non mathematician

2015-10-01 Thread scotlace
 Thanks Joy,

The last part, which I would call arithmetic, I can understand. I'm not going
to say how long it is since I studied maths but suffice it to say that it is so
long ago I've forgotten what it was about. I managed O grade maths, (algebra,
geometry, trigonometry) sat at 16, and that was my lot. Without that, though,
I wouldn't have got into university as all my other subjects were languages,
history and literature.
Simple arithmetic I was always good at which is why I understand some of your
explanation. You are a good teacher!

Patricia

>> I have a
magazine with patterns printed at 50% and 75%

>> to get 100% of pattern size?

It's ninth-grade
algebra: (If the word "algebra" gives you
brain-freeze, just read the part
between dashed lines.)

Let P be the percent by which the pattern in the
publication
has been enlarged or reduced.

Let C be the percent at which you
need to set your copier.

Then P times C equals 100%: PC = 1

Divide both
sides of the equation by P: C =
1/P
-
That is, you
need to set the copier for the inverse of the
change that you want to
undo.
-
You can punch
"1 divide P equals" on your calculator, but if
the percentage happens to be a
common fraction, you can just
turn it upside down.

50% is 1/2, so to undo
it, you use 2, which is 200%.
(Remember that "per cent" means "divide by one
hundred".)

75% is 3/4, so you would use 4/3, which is one and a third:

133.33%

[lace-chat] ITV Player and Adobe flash Player

2014-11-07 Thread scotlace
This question may apply only to UK people. I have just been catching up on a
'half hour' programme on ITV Player and have been bothered all the way through
it by the persistent reappearance of an action box on the screen. It is
headed Adobe Flash Player Settings and says www.itv.com wants permission to
increase local storage from 100KB to 1MB. Then there are two smaller boxes to
choose to click on; one says 'allow' and one says 'deny'. Since I am a
suspicious person I want to deny but it refuses to accept this and keeps
popping up again. I spent the programme with my finger on the mouse to remove
this irritant from the middle of the screen.

My question is: Is it safe to
'allow'? I really can't be bothered with this performance all through a
programme and allowing would remove the irritant but I don't know enough about
it to go ahead. Well, to be truthful, I know exactly nothing about it.

I
must repeat my thanks to all those who responded to my previous question. One
person (name slips my memory) suggested, after the problem had been solved,
pressing the keys Escape and Alt together and this rings bells as I was
certainly told to press two keys together last time, years ago. This time,
all replies have been filed and I shouldn't need to ask that particular
question again.

This time I think I am looking for reassurance that it is
safe to agree to this increase.

[lace] Scottish Diaspora Tapestry - warning, no actual lace content for those who are interested only in lace

2014-06-08 Thread scotlace
I have spent this afternoon looking at the panels produced for this
exhibition. Afterwards I thoroughly enjoyed the talk given by Andrew Crummy,
the artist who designed all the panels, plus those in the the 'Battle of
Prestonpans' tapestry and the 'Great Scottish Tapestry although this one
immediately follows Prestonpans as the same basic team was involved, not just
the artist. He explained the design process beginning with a chart which he
used for all three, through the information gathering process, the actual
designing process which also involved the person who contributed the subject
matter of of each panel, the transfer of the design onto linen, choosing the
thread and finally sending out the kits to be stitched in ' a' the airts' of
the world.

There is a book, just out, which I bought:

Scottish Diaspora Tapestry: telling tales to Scotland by Andrew Crummy et
al. Prestoungrange University Press, 2014.
978-0-9575636-5-0 Pbk 15.00 GBP

I also treated myself to the Prestonpans book and now I have all three
'tapestry' books to enjoy.

Re: [lace] Footside on left

2014-04-23 Thread scotlace
Actually the entire UK - Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - not just
England, drives on the left. The reason goes back before the time of
automated transport to the days of horseback travel - and highwaymen and
footpads. Supposedly riding on the left allowed the right arm, the sword arm,
to be free for defence. Definitely not the reason for having the footside on
the left.

Australia is another country which drives on the left.

Patricia in Wales

I think it is the same reason why the English drive on the left, while
everyone else drives on the right. But, I don't know what that reason is.

[lace] Care of fabrics - 1940s style

2014-04-08 Thread scotlace
I have been reading the book Jambusters by Julie Summers which is about the
role the Women's Institute played in the 1940s when everything, including
food, was in short supply. On p156 of the paperback edition is the following,
about clothing:

The government's hope was that people would reuse and repair old garments
rather than insisting on buying new outfits. The WI offered advice on how to
give old garments a new lease of life including rubbing hot bran into tweed
skirts and jackets, cleaning white materials with ground rice and using
powdered magnesia to clean delicate fabrics such as lace, embroideries, white
kid and suede gloves Oil of eucalyptus would revive jaded silk and faded
crepe de chine.Grandmother's recipes for cleaning clothes were proposed
but sounded very expensive: 'For cleaning silk mix well together three
ounces of strained honey, two ounces of castile soap and half a pint of
gin.'

I do wonder how practical these tips were given a scarce food (ground rice) is
proposed as a cleaning agent. I can think, too, of a better use of gin! As
the list is quiet at the moment I thought there was space for this and perhaps
some interest in it.

Re: [lace] Care of fabrics - 1940s style

2014-04-08 Thread scotlace
Since this is the only risible paragraph in the entire book I have no idea if
this was taken seriously but I suspect not. Apart from anything else, women
simply didn't have the time to mess around with all these processes. if
clothing couldn't be washed it may not have been worn. You have to read the
book to appreciate how much rural women did, in addition to looking after
their families, like keeping hens, raising pigs, growing vast amounts of fruit
and vegetables and then preserving much of the fruit one way or another to put
it in the public food chain, knitting and sewing clothes for themselves and
for families left without anything, taking care of evacuated children etc.,
etc. I was surprised they had time to sleep!

Patricia in Wales

I wonder if this is like prices for lace books. They can ask for a certain
price for a lace book, but it doesn't mean they'll get it. Here, they could
suggest these cleaning methods, but it doesn't mean people were stupid enough
to risk their precious fabrics with these concoctions.Lyn in Lancaster,

Re: [lace] Storms in UK and Europe!

2013-10-28 Thread scotlace
Clay

We in my part of Wales got off very lightly considering what was expected.
The storm's path remained on the English side of the Severn Estuary (aka
Bristol Channel) and we were deluged (nothing new there!) rather than blown to
bits. According to our local news the main problem was flooded roads and I
imagine some trees may have come down simply because we had a prolonged period
of high winds on Saturday and during daylight hours on Sunday and the ground
was already sodden.

Southern England suffered the most and no doubt people from that area will
tell of their experiences. Even there the event was less serious than the
hurricane of 1987.

Patricia in Wales

Dear spiders!

I am so concerned about all of my friends in the UK and Europe who are
experiencing the storms! These are so similar to the storms we had last year,
and they were devastating!

So, please keep us posted as you get past the worst of the storms, and as you
learn of others who were not so fortunate, let our list know.

[lace] Teaching lace - UK background checks

2013-07-29 Thread scotlace
I seem to remember it was said that people required a background check for
each class/group taught in different locations. This morning, in the church
coffee lounge I was told the system has changed. The conversation arose
because volunteers for the two summer clubs - one for children and one for
'seniors' - were being handed forms to be completed.

Since the 17th June the old CRB forms are outdated and won't 'work' now. The
new system is 'Debarring and disclosure service'. Only one form is required
with no cost to volunteers. Once you have competed the form and had it
accepted you register online for a 'portable' badge (or whatever is issued to
you). I assume this is at no extra cost to those being paid for their
services/jobs.

You can find out about it on:

www.homeoffice.gov.uk/dbs

You still need proof of identity - but you would expect that.

This won't help the people who have given up teaching or the classes lost but
I felt the information should be publicised, especially given the lengthy
discussion recently held about the problems of volunteering.

P.S. This is UK wide and not simply a Welsh development.

Re: [lace] Teaching lace - UK background checks

2013-07-29 Thread scotlace
Volunteers do not pay now: I said specifically 'no cost to volunteers'.
Employers pay for their employees. My niece has just graduated in radiography
(with first class honours and student of the year prize; I'm so proud I have
to boast, given the problems she had) and is having a background check done
now. If she was expected to pay for it I would have heard all about it,
believe me, as she is so hard up. Her employing Health Board is footing the
bill.

In the early days of background checks my local council paid for them for
teachers, assistants, dinner ladies and crossing patrol people as well as for
us reading volunteers. I see no reason for that to have changed. I assume the
self employed -e.g. private music teacher - pay for themselves.

[lace] Bayeux Tapestry copy

2013-03-24 Thread scotlace
Who saw The Antiques roadshow tonight? A man had brought along his copy, a
work in progress, of the B. tapestry. He saw little pieces of copies at a
reinactment event years ago and decided he could do it, too. So, he bought
the cloth, started drawing the design and sewed it in the two stitches he
knows. It is, if I remember correctly, about 40 feet long and has been 17
years in the making but only 14 of serious effort. He spends a couple of
hours every evening on it.

It looked most impressive for a skilled sewer to have produced but clearly
sewing wasn't a main interest of his till he started this project.

For those who manage to see these programmes outside Britain it is in the
second programme from the Royal Dockyards at Chatham in Kent.

This isn't lace, I know, but is textile and I know from previous discussions
that many people are interested in the Tapestry.

built post Reformation. Certainly the village Church of Scotland building I

and is known to have been Roman Catholic and was, in fact, a Collegiate

A. I really don't see why the reburial of ancient bones should be determined
by convenience to tourists and, as others have said, there are considerations
which are really important.

B. Actually, it would be good for tourists not to limit their visits to London
(or Edinburgh or Cardiff, the three capitals) and see more of the country.
The entire country is rich with history.

Patricia in Wales

And, I think you can assume that most of them were built on sacred springs
that pre-dated Christian worship. Just sayin...

From what it says about Westminster Abbey, it was built by Henry III, who was
himself a Catholic and a Plantagenet! He's buried in Westminster Abbey. So, I
am still a little confused about why the logical place for Richard III would
not be Westminster Abbey.

I am inclined to think that the Queen should step in and make a decision. It
is totally unreasonable for tourists to have to travel all over England
looking for Royal tombs.

This must be resolved before they dig up King Alfred!

When I looked at the picture my first reaction was that is was a kind of
needle holder for an embroiderer using several colours. By having needles
threaded in the required colours it was quick and easy to switch.

Modern holders are flat and, I think, magnetic. I've only seen them in
photographs but they are designed for a quick change from one colour to
another.

Patricia in Wales

That translation seems to imply it was a scissor type of needle holder. The
points of the needles seem to pushed in to a piece on the scissors, and to
get one out - one opens the scissors, and removes a needle.

Very odd!!!

[lace] Lace and education

2012-08-13 Thread scotlace
Please note that the comments made about education apply to England and Wales
only. John Knox stated that every church should have a school master to teach
the rudiments. Much later, in 1696, there was passed an Act for Setting
Schools which provided that every parish which didn't have a school had to
establish one and there should be High Schools to teach Latin etc. Actual
provision must have been patchy for some considerable time and take up of the
opportunity was most likely uneven but from the eighteenth century an
education system was well established with at least some sons of poor farmers
etc making it to university.

It is many years since my father died and my memory may be at fault but I
believe his little village school could teach to university level for those
who would and/or could take advantage of this. He was born in 1903 and so I
am talking around 100 years ago when public transport as we know it now was
mostly not available and most people walked if they needed to leave their
village.

Otherwise comments about poverty apply to all parts of the UK.

I am very sad to relay to you all that Betty Ann Rice died last night
about 8:45.

Betty Ann lived in Roanoke, VA with the love of her life,
husband/boyfriend Clive. She learned to make lace in England when she
was stationed there with the Navy. After returning to the US, Betty Ann
continued to learn, and to teach others. She formed the Blue Ridge Lace
Guild, and brought many enthusiastic lacemakers into the magic of lace.
She was directly responsible for the formation of the Cardinal Lace
Guild in Lynchburg, as she had taught the original members who later
decided to form their own group closer to home.

Betty Ann was known for her outgoing personality, her marvelous sense of
humor, and her dedication to friends and family. She was also known for
her voice - which had a distinct personality of its own, and was never
mistaken for someone else!!

Betty Ann had open heart surgery a month ago, and returned to her home
on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday, she collapsed, and was rushed back to
the hospital.

She will be missed by all who loved her.

Re: [lace-chat] Green thing

2012-01-31 Thread scotlace
I sometimes think about asking if I will get a discount if I go through the
self service checkout! Bet I know what the answer would be. I wouldn't mind
so much if these do it yourself tills were actually quicker. In Wales we have
to pay for plastic bags if we don't bring out own. So, at the beginning we
are asked to put our bags on the packing up belt and press 'done' when we've
done so. One supermarket's system cannot cope with more than one bag in that
area and you have to wait for an assistant, in effect, to confirm you haven't
sneaked unpaid for goods onto it.

Patricia in Wales

A lot of our supermarkets have introduced self-service checkouts, so you
take the goods off the shelf, put them in your trolley, take them out of the
trolley and scan them, then put them in your bags which you've put in your
trolley. You pay by cash, credit card or debit card through a slot. If cash
and you need change, that's spewed out of a slot and a receipt emerges from
another. You push the trolley to your car and move the bags from the trolley
to your car boot.

One supermarket uses the first of the above or they have handsets which you
use if you've registered a credit or debit card. With that, you put your
bags in the trolley, take the goods off the shelves, scan them with the
handset, put the goods in your bags in an organised way and finalise at a
separate checkout. You push the trolley to your car and move the bags from
the trolley to your car boot.

We used to be served - now we serve ourselves. We always had the goods
checked out - now they want us to do it ourselves. How long before they
start expecting us the fill the shelves as well?

Janice In this country we can no longer pay by cheque as our bank cards no
longer serve as cheque guarantee cards. At one point the banks wanted to
phase cheques out altogether but there was so much opposition they had to
abandon the idea v- for the present, at least. When I use mail order I always
use cheques and so I'm pleased I can continue to do so.

We don't have the scanner thingy over here yet, at least not in this area, but

we do have self checking. I really dislike it when I buy produce and have to
look things up that don't have barcodes. I usually pay with a check which
also
slows things down as I then have to wait for the person who is in charge of at
least 6 scanners to get to me and accept the check. I like to treat the
supermarket as my bank and usually get some cash change for pocket money.
Sometimes there is only one normal check-out open with a regular cashier but
if

I have veg I stand in line. Apart from Aldi, we still can get bags if we
forget

to bring our own. Shopping is becoming a real chore these days

[lace] Spider silk cape

2012-01-23 Thread scotlace
Seen on BBC Breakfast programme a buttery yellow cape made from the silk of
spiders from Madagascar. Information from the programme:-

The spiders are captured in the morning, attached to a harness and the silk
thread is gathered for about 20 minutes after which the unharmed spider is
released back into the wild. Then the thread is spun. (No information about
any process between gathering the thread and spinning it.)

The garment is a basic cape without any shaping, simply a back and split
front. But the close ups showed beautiful embroidery with the same thread.
the theme of the embroidery is spiders. The cape is on show at the Victoria
and Albert museum in London.

Children wore liberty bodices and horrible things they were, too! To me a
spencer was always a fine wool garment worn next to the skin. It could have
long or short sleeves, round or v neck. In the days before central heating it
enabled you to be warm and yet look smart without having an extra layer on top
of a pretty dress. A chemise is something I read about in old fashioned
books.

The name I remember as a kid growing up which went on over my vest (not the
north American version of vest which to us Brits is a v-neck sleeveless
sweater) was a liberty bodice. It was made of cotton had taped seams and
cloth covered buttons

Just my 2 cents worth.

Dear Friends,

In case you didn't see it, there was recently a programme on TV
which showed a group of Army wives who were gathered together to
form a choir, in order that they could sing to their husbands at
the reception they held for them on their return from a tour of
duty in Afghanistan. They were so good that they were invited to
take part in the Festival of Remembrance at the Albert Hall. This
song was written especially for the occasion and was the opening
 piece of the evening.

This link portrays the song and the meaning it portrayed.

the second page). The finished size is just short of A4.

There were no threads or instructions give, just a small picture of
Jean's finished lace and an outline pattern. I decided to make it in
blue - a light blue for the motifs with a double thread in navy to
outline them and pick out some detail and white for the background to
make it as much like a willow pattern plate as possible. I used Venus
crochet thread and decided how to make variations in the stitches for
 the elements as I went.

Must say that I found it very fiddly, especially finishing off each
motif, and don't think I'll tackle anything like that again - I'll
 stick to continuous lace.

Dear Friends,
Some of you may be interested in this little knitting book which I
saw on the Graham Norton show last night and bought immediately.

It's called Knit Yourself a Royal Wedding and would be a great one
for teaching children to knit.

Check out this website:-

Hello lacemakers,

The Danish royal twins were christened today and I was curious to see what
they were wearing,

They both have lace trimmed gowns and lace bonnets,

I hope there will be some close up pictures to view the lace better!

[lace-chat] Fwd: On Being Older and wiser..........

2011-01-28 Thread scotlace
I don't think this has been on the list before - but I maybe wrong!

ONE
Recently, when I went to McDonald's I saw on the menu that you
could have an order of 6, 9 or 12 Chicken McNuggets.

I asked for a half dozen nuggets.

'We don't have half dozen nuggets,' said the teenager at the counter.

'You don't?' I replied.

'We only have six, nine, or twelve,' was the reply.

'So I can't order a half dozen nuggets, but I can order six?'

'That's right.'

So I shook my head and ordered six McNuggets
(Unbelievable but sadly true...)

TWO
I was checking out at the local Wal-Mart with just a few items and the lady
behind me put her things on the belt close to mine. I picked up one of those
'dividers' that they keep by the cash register and placed it between our
things so they wouldn't get mixed.

After the girl had scanned all of my items, she picked up the
'divider', looking it all over for the bar code so she could scan it.

Not finding the bar code, she said to me, 'Do you know how much this is?'

I said to her 'I've changed my mind; I don't think I'll buy that today.'

She said 'OK,' and I paid her for the things and left.

She had no clue to what had just happened.

THREE
A woman at work was seen putting a credit card into her floppy drive and
pulling it out very quickly.

When I inquired as to what she was doing, she said she was shopping on the
Internet and they kept asking for a credit card number, so she was using the
ATM 'thingy.'
(keep shuddering!!)

FOUR
I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car.
'Do you need some help?' I asked.

She replied, 'I knew I! should have replaced the battery to this remote door
unlocker. Now I can't get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a
distant convenience store) would have a battery to fit this?'

'Hmmm, I don't know. Do you have an alarm, too?' I asked.

'No, just this remote thingy,' she answered, handing it and the car keys to
me. As I took the key and manually unlocked the door, I
replied, 'Why don't you drive over there and check about the batteries. It's
a long walk'

PLEASE just lay down before you hurt yourself !!!

 FIVE
Several years ago, we had an Intern who was none too swift. One day she was
typing and turned to a secretary and said, 'I'm almost out of typing paper.
What do I do?' 'Just use paper from the photocopier', the secretary told
her. With that, the intern took
her last remaining blank piece of paper, put it on the photocopier and
proceeded to make five 'blank' copies.

Brunette, by the way!!

 SIX
A mother calls 911 very worried asking the dispatcher if she needs to
take her kid to the emergency room, the kid had eaten ants. The dispatcher
tells her to give the kid some Benadryl and he should be fine, the mother
says, 'I just gave him some ant killer..'

Dispatcher: 'Rush him in to emergency!'

Life is tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid

Someone had to remind me, so I'm reminding you too. Don't laugh.it is all
true...

Perks of reaching 50 or being over 60 and heading towards 70!
01. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.

02.. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first

03. No one expects you to run--anywhere.

04. People call at 9 PM and ask,did I wake you?

05. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.

06. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.

07. Things you buy now won't wear out.

08. You can eat supper at 4 PM.

09. You can live without sex but not your glasses.

10. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.

11. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.

12. You quit trying to hold your stomach in no matter who walks into the room.

13. You sing along with elevator music.

14. Your eyes won't get much worse.

15. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.

16. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather
service.

17. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them
either.

18. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.

19. You can't remember who sent you this list.

20.And you notice these are all in Big Print for your convenience.

Forward this to every one you can remember right now!

I just love this one!

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the
same night.

I'm afraid the BBc.com will never 'get its act together' for as long as we
have to pay a license fee (for owning a television or watching on a PC) to
fund the BBC. Only if that changes may BBC programmes be available on line
 internationally.

If I log on to BBC iplayer via the aol website I am most often denied
access to it because, for some reason, the BBC cannot distinguish between
British aol addresses and overseas ones. I access via Internet Explorer. So,
the BBC does not give away what we British citizens have to pay for.

The Milky Bar Kid is a long running advertisement in Britain for a
chocolate bar - Milky bar by name! While the child playing the part changes
every
few years he is usually fair haired with specs and is wearing a cowboy

lasted. As far as I can tell little boys do not play cowboys and Indians any

If you go to Amazon UK you can read the first few pages. It is clearly
written for fairly young children - 8 ish - and presumably has been written
more to explain Asperger's than bobbin lace. Listed on Amazon are other tales
concerning the condition written by the same author. There is no indication
in the first few pages of how much the author knows about lace.

[lace-chat] Re: [lace] Pricking material/libraries

2010-05-31 Thread Scotlace
In addition to what Brenda said, in the UK, educational establishments are
allowed to make more than one copy for educational purposes. For example,
in the university library we made up to 5 copies of a magazine article/book
chapter to be read in the library by any number of students up to around
100. This had the added advantage of reducing the amount of
theft/mutilation of library materials by students desperate to get their hands
on reading
list material. I believe many (most?) of the students photocopied the
photocopies so that they had their own copies to refer to outside the
libraries. As the photocopiers were always some distance from library staff
no one
monitored this.

I should add that we bought multiple copies of basic texts for restricted
borrowing.

Schools have permits to copy certain materials for classroom use but I
don't know how that is arranged.

The details requested - full name and address, date of birth, mother's
