[LegacyUG] New to Users Group

2006-07-19 Thread Pat

I signed up recently looking for some help and wondered why I didn't receive a single response. Guess I understand now.

[LegacyUG] Making a backup of my family file

2006-07-20 Thread Pat

Fairly recently, my computer crashed and I lost my family file and do not want that to happen again. Can you tell me, step-by-step how to put a copy of the file on a CD. I really need specifics because I have not done this before. I did get one response, but it was not specific enough to help me. I regularly back my file up on the C drive. The file is called familyfile.fdb, and I notice that when I back it up and creates a zip file. Does that make sense?

[LegacyUG] My apology to LUG and thank you to Cathy

2006-07-28 Thread Pat
My sincerest apologies to the LUG for the emoticons in my IncrediMail
messages. First of all, because I DO NOT send messages to myself very
often (and when I do, the emoticons do not show up on mine), I was NOT aware
that everyone else was getting them. After I was informed by a couple of
grouchy people, I was ready to Unsubscribe, because I didn't know how to get
rid of them.

A special thank you to Cathy who e-mailed me with info on how I could get
rid of them. Some of us newer folks are just not as computer savvy as
others, and instead of just complaining, it is so much kinder if you would
offer solutions, and try to be helpful.

[LegacyUG] Residence Event

2008-10-11 Thread Pat
Problem: I want to correctly copy Legacy7 family Residence event
information (including the residence notes) to other members of the family.

Question: 1) Should I use a GEDCOM RESI tag for my imported Family
residence events or 2) Should I use a tag name of EVEN Residence for the
Family residence event?

I am trying to import my existing database, from TMG7, and really don't know
which GEDCOM export option I should use so that I can correctly use Legacy7
Residence Copy and Paste capabilities.

Do any of you folks know of a good graphics program I can use to convert

I bought a scanner which would handle negatives (needs to shine a light
through
rather than reflect off) and the scanning software does an automatic
convert.

As has been mentioned, download Irfanview (totally free) and open the
image in it. On the toolbar select Image negative and save the new
image. Done. Easy. Free.

Re: [LegacyUG] Default Browser Selection

2009-08-11 Thread Pat

Evening Ron,

Well, Legacy says that I can use any browser I want to use; as long as I let
the Legacy program know where it is located on my disk. I let Legacy know
(see the details below) and the program verified that I had given it the
correct hard disk address. Legacy did in fact start Google Chrome (as it
should).

In answer to your question you might want to follow these example/steps
and you will see what I mean.

I) Choose Legacy Home tab
2) Choose Bring your Legacy family file with you on a USB drive, cell
phone, or PalmOS device
3) About half way down on the page a URL appears for Learn more about
MojoPac by CLICKING HERE.

4) Click on by clicking here.

Problem: On my machine it brings up Internet Explorer (which is not my
default browser) in a separate window; instead of using my default Google
Chrome browser.

Comment: I thought the purpose of this particular Legacy Customize Screen
was to allow you to use the browser of your choice, and/or the Alternate
Word Processor of your choice, and/or the Alternate Text Editor of your
choice, and/or the Alternate Adobe Acrobat Reader of your choice.

Wonder why I keep getting Internet Explorer screens; when Legacy has
provided us with a dedicated screen letting us choose support equipment
other than the defaults chosen by Legacy?

Pat,

Guess I am missing something here, but how do you know? You are probably
correct as Legacy is based on MS Access and it makes sense to use their
products for its internal use - hence the use of Bing for mapping.

Since the News appears within Legacy I cannot tell which browser it's using.

[LegacyUG] Help with deleting without deleting :)

2009-11-10 Thread Pat
Hi, I'm new to this list. I merged records several months ago. I now find
that I am listed 3 times as well as my husband. I deleted one of the
listings of my husbandand now he is gone out of my pedigree! Help how
do I get him back!! I added him again by typing in his info, but now how do
I link him to his parents and the rest of his ancestors?

When I print out a family group sheet, either he or I were showing up 3
times. I just wanted to get rid of 2 of the listings. How do I delete 2 of
my listings without losing me like I did my husband? :(

Thanks in advance for any help.

[LegacyUG] italics or other formatting in names and the data that goes with them

2006-12-20 Thread Pat Jones
Hi all,

Some time ago I imported a gedcom in which some of the names and
their data were in italics while others were in bold. While I'm
cleaning up all the data after transferring the database from FTM
to Legacy, I'd like to get rid of all of the formatting I do not
want. How do I go about it and is there a way to clean it up
globally? I've tried individually deleting the name and unwanted
data formatting then reentering it in normal text but that didn't
work.

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Automatic sentences for events in reports

2006-12-22 Thread Pat Jones
I see that the Deluxe Edition, which I have, automatically forms
the events into sentences when printed. How about if I don't
want to use them in sentences, is there a way to shut off that
option? I had hoped the 'sentence override' would do it, but it
doesn't. I really hate to just delete all the options under
sentence override. Any suggestions? What do others think
about the automatic sentences and their useage - the pros and
cons.

[LegacyUG] Fixing Imported Sources

2007-02-11 Thread Pat Jones
I just imported a GEDCOM of my family tree from FTM. My sources

Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help

2007-02-15 Thread Pat Jones
Elizabeth, I feel just like you do. I've brought a big datatbase
into Legacy from another program and while it appeared to come
over without too many glitches, I'm now finding strange couplings
of sources and people who have absolutely no reason to have had
that source coupled with them.

Also, trying to figure out how to insert sources and events and
all their associated windows have about driven me to the wall.
The book has definintely NOT been of use but I did find the first
set of CDs (borrowed from a friend) cleared up some of the
problems with how to insert information into Sources and Events.
I finally managed to get one Census looking the way that I wanted
it and made my own cheat sheet so that I could redo all of the
Census information the same way now and in the future.

I'm still playing with the way I've entered them. Tonight I'd
like to see what happens if I enter only the words US Federal
Census for the Master Source List Name, then define which one it
is in some other window, wondering if that would cut down on the
number of entries in the Master Source List without causing
problems elsewhere.

Is there anyone out there who has tried this? What were the
results?

Thank you, that would be great. I just don't know what
I am doing incorrectly, although I'm sure it must be
something that I'm not understanding properly.

My goal is to create an online dowloadable/printable
'book' for my family, but I am also having a very
difficult time figuring out exactly where to enter
information so that things show up where I want them.
I sure wish there were lots of examples and SPECIFIC
instructions somewhere for Legacy. I can follow
directions if none of them are omitted. Everything I
have looked at in help files has been of little help
because it seems to assume that I already know a lot.
I've tried all sorts of things and my files are a
jumbled mess.

My phone number is 717-939-2464 and you can reach me
any weekday between 1:00 and 3:00 PM.

Thanks again,
Elizabeth

first file column is headed RIN. I have a party with the #
14851 (don't know whether this is a User ID or RIN number for
him). When I put this number in the search field (User ID), I
can't find him although I seem to be able to find everyone else I
try it with using their number. When I do a search on his name,
however, he comes up immediately.

What is going on and how do I fix this for this person?

Re: [LegacyUG] problems with searching in the Index Views

2007-02-15 Thread Pat Jones
Tried going to Options, Customize, View to see what was checked.
Under Display RINS on names I have checks in On all Name Lists
and On Family View and Pedigree View. Under Numbers to Add to
Names I have RIN turned on.

I have looked at this name under the various views and the RIN is
always 1344. I can find him on the Index by sorting on the RIN.
I can NOT access him by putting his number in the User ID box; I
can find everyone else I have tried by putting their RIN number
in the User ID box.

I ran both File Maintenance options and that did't help. I shut
down the program and brought it up again and that didn't help.
I'm stumped as to a fix. I CAN always do a workaround by just
using his name for the sort but just seems strange that just his
doesn't seem to work when reying to locate him using User ID.

Hi Pat,

You can customise the columns in Index view so I suggest you add
User ID.
See Options button on Index View and access Customise Columns.

Suggest you also use File File Maintenance Check/Repair
It's worth doing this fairly regularly to check the indexes in
the database.

[LegacyUG] quick genealogy question

2007-03-08 Thread Pat Jones
I'm cleaning up my database and currently working on the 1860
census. In the occupation column I keep finding a work that
looks like it might be domestic; however, in this case it is
applied to a male who apparently owned the place where the family
was living as he is the only one with a value in the Value of
real estate owned column. Is that word actually 'domestic, and
if so, what does the enumerator mean by it? If it isn't
domestic, what is is?

Thanks for your help, I haven't been able to find any explanation
in the books I have in my library.

Re: [LegacyUG] quick genealogy question

2007-03-10 Thread Pat Jones
I'm mostly working on the 1860 Illinois census, various places
from farms to small towns. I find the word used somewhat
sporadically through the various census. At first I thought it
depended on the census taker but even within the work done by one
census taker it was not always consistant.

In reading The Source, 3rd Edition, I find that the census taker
was to list the occupation of everyone over the age of 15. My
guess now is that the word is domestic, meaning that they were
over the age of 15 and did something, but not a specific job like
farmer or blacksmith, etc. That would account for all of the
cases I've found so far.

Still, in the case of the male who was listed domestic but was
the only one in the family with a value of real estate owned, it
does seem odd as one would led to believe he was the one that
owned the farm they were living on. Maybe he owned it but was
letting his brother do the work?lol

Thanks all for your input

I would also look around the neighboring pages for how
many other domestics are listed, and if differentiated
by types. Is it rural or urban? In major cities
servants may not live on premises. He might be a
domestic in a gentleman's club, and not live there. (
'My Fair Lady' and 'Around the World in Eighty Days'
are literary examples.)

Print the Picture List from View Scrapbook

You have a lot of different options of what to include.

One point though if your images are too big they don't always

[LegacyUG] Where to put Notes

2007-03-21 Thread Pat Jones
All, need some help with Notes. I've looked through the manual
and LUG archives but haven't found the answer. I have chunks of
information from various sources (books, individuals, newspapers,
etc) that I want to include when any of the reports are printed.
It seems to me the logical place to put them would be under
Notes. I see an icon on that entry page to click on to give
sources, clicked on that and entered the sources, expecting to
see it print out in a report - but it didn't - and I don't see
any place to make it do so. So I went to the manual and archives
for help but didn't find the answer in either. I did, however,
see a suggestion to a note to the bottom of my information giving
a short source which I have done and like the idea. So the
question remains - why isn't the full source printing out in the
reports?

[LegacyUG] missing source on report

Pat, Just an FYI -- you do NOT have to go into each individual record to
check the box . You can go to OptionsCustomize, (forgive me asut I am not
on my computer with Legacy loaded) but one of the tabs allows you to select
add this detail/include on reports. Once you click on that, it will run
through your entire data base and click the box so the detail now appears.
This is like a toggle on/toggle off switch. If at some point you decide NOT to
include all that detail, you can remove the checked boxes in the same manner.
I don't know if that makes sense or not-- if not, contact me and when I am on
my computer with Legacy, I will walk through the specific steps and screens.

[LegacyUG] Individual marked private

2007-03-28 Thread Pat Jones
When I try to run a Family report containing one specific
individual (a child), she is marked as Private, details
suppressed for this person. However, when I run the same type
of report using her as the subject of the report, she shows up.
No settings were changed between the running of the two reports.
On her page in the lower, right hand corner, she is NOT marked
Private. What's happening and how do I fix it?

You're not thick June, I think it's a case of poor page design.
Fortunately, someone tipped me off to go to the Legacy program

click on Updates on the right side of the page.

Odd, I updated from the Legacy program page you just described

June,

That's the way it works. Just be sure that you are downloading
the
update - it's the third one down on the update page, I think. It
will
look like it's installing the whole thing, but it will only
install
the update. You will not have to reenter your code.

The easiest way to update is to open your Legacy program, be sure
that
you on on the Legacy Home tab, then look on the right hand side
under
Updates and click on the link to update your program. You do not
have
to fill in your name and email address that way. Although, it
did ask
me for the password when I upgraded last night. I don't remember
it
doing that before, but I may have just forgotten.

Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem

2007-04-12 Thread Pat Jones
Let's see if I can explain this better. I think I have multiple
problems.

Joseph married three times
by his 1st wife Elen, he had only one child, Ann
by his second wife Sarah, he had two more, David and Thomas

I entered Ann as the daughter of Joseph and his first wife
correctly. Then, somehow I also entered the two boys as sons of
Joseph and his first wife. I need to remove them and only have
the two boys show up under Joseph and his 2nd wife. The two boys
are also doubled under the first wife - once as if they are
natural sons of Joseph and Ann, once as if they are natural to
Joseph, step to Elen.

When I switch to the 2nd wife, Sarah, Ann shows as a 1/2
(correct), but I have one set of sons, Thomas and David as
natural to both Joseph and the 2nd wife (correct) and a repeat
set as natural to Joseph and 1/2 to Elen (incorrect).

I'm not at all certain how to clean up this mess.

Pat,
Go to the individual view for one of the duplicated children.
Look for
the parent icon. Does it have more than a 1 in a box? Click on
the
parent icon. Does it show more than one set? Highlight the
incorrect
parent set, if it is there, and select Unlink from Child.

You probably don't have two records for the child, you probably
just
linked them twice.

I hope this works for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem

2007-04-12 Thread Pat Jones
Hmmm. I just did that but the two boys are still connected to
father and 1st wife (incorrect) as well as father and 2nd wife
(correct). They show as 1/2s under father and 1st wife. When I
right click on them under the father and 1st wife, neither show
up on the Children's setting, just the daughter which should be
there.

I checked both boys to see if they each have duplicates. That
problem is corrected. It is the same two individuals showing up
as children for the father and 1st wife and the father and 2nd
wife. They are children of the father and 2nd wife only (the 1st
wife was dead). I don't think the program is supposed to be
showing these two boys as 1/2s of the dead wife. But I can't
make it stop doing that.

Hi Pat,

Not sure if this will help. But I would unlink the child from the
parents
(may need to be unlinked more than once) and then when you have
correct
father and mother on the screen add the child back in.

Hope this helps.

Let's see if I can help
I think if you open up the family that is technically incorrect
ie correct
father, incorrect mother and two sons. I believe the simplest way
is to
initially 'unlink' the incorrect mother/wife from the husband.
i.e
rightclick wife and click 'unlink' from husband - this is only
temporary -
the sons will stay with the husband, and hopefully still with
their original
mother.
Then you will have the father only showing one named wife, but
also showing
the father with an 'unknown' person as mother of the first
daughter. If you
click on that 'unknown' wife/mother you should then be offered to
'add a new
person or 'link to existing person' and the little box 'add this
person to
the currently displayed marriage needs to be checked. You should
select
Link to an existing person and then you can reattach wife #1
only to the
husband and daughter #1.
Hope that isnt' too complicated.

I think it does that automatically. I have them unlinked from
everyone (father and all three wives) right now and all I had to
do was unlink each boy from the father once.

Hi Pat, Did you unlink the boys completely from all parents. So
that they
appear with no parents at all.

It is the same two individuals showing
 up
as children for the father and 1st wife and the father and 2nd
wife. They are children of the father and 2nd wife only (the
 1st
wife was dead). I don't think the program is supposed to be
showing these two boys as 1/2s of the dead wife. But I can't
 make it stop doing that.

 Hi Pat,

Not sure if this will help. But I would unlink the child from
 the
 parents
(may need to be unlinked more than once) and then when you have
 correct
father and mother on the screen add the child back in.

 Hope this helps.

Let's see if I can explain this better. I think I have
 multiple
 problems.

 Joseph married three times
by his 1st wife Elen, he had only one child, Ann
by his second wife Sarah, he had two more, David and Thomas

I entered Ann as the daughter of Joseph and his first wife
correctly. Then, somehow I also entered the two boys as sons
 of
Joseph and his first wife. I need to remove them and only have
the two boys show up under Joseph and his 2nd wife. The two
 boys
are also doubled under the first wife - once as if they are
natural sons of Joseph and Ann, once as if they are natural to
 Joseph, step to Elen.

Click
 on
 the
parent icon. Does it show more than one set? Highlight the
 incorrect
parent set, if it is there, and select Unlink from Child.

You probably don't have two records for the child, you
 probably
 just
 linked them twice.

I hope this works for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] run-time error 429

2007-05-06 Thread Pat Jones
Sherry (and all others using Spybot Search Destroy)

After I had sent the help message, I did try running the
Check/Repair but that did nothing ; then, before I got your
message this morning, I tried running Microsoft's System Restore
and moving back to a time prior to the weekly clean-up of my
computer. Then I tried running Legacy and it worked perfectly.
So my gut level feeling was that something had happened when I
ran one of the cleanup programs on my computer (Spybot, AVG,
AdAware, CCleaner and Registry Mechanic). So I looked to see
what each program had removed starting (fortunately) with Spybot.
It was ICQ-SpyMonitor. Then I went to the internet and looked
that up. The first site up happened to be ICQ-Spymonitor - Safer
Networking Forums on which I found a post from you. Apparently
by removing the supposed spyware program, for which Spybot
appears to have thrown a false positive, it removed some coding
that Legacy needs to run.

After making certain Legacy was running properly and that I had a
clean backup, I next tried cleaning up the computer with AVG and
AdAware, neither of which caused any problems; however, I am
still left with the supposed spyware ICQ-SpyMonitor on my
computer which does bother me.

So now the question is should I go ahead and run the check/repair
again and then, if that does nothing, follow through with the
other instructions on that help? How about the Spybot issue?
Since you responded on the Safer Newworking Forum, I presume you
also use Spybot?

[LegacyUG] Idea--an .fdb for background info? Plus book question.

2007-07-16 Thread Pat H

I'm trying something new (for me):
In addition to my two main family databases (paternal, maternal), I've
added two databases for background info for the two families (one for each
line): for example town, county, or church histories, geographical
information, etc. Of course, most of the information I enter goes into the
Notes section.
Ordinarily I enter a new subject by clicking Add, New unlinked
individual. Sometimes, however, I have a state as the father and towns,
independent cities and counties as children.

I like having the background info readily available -- and used to put it
in under an individual -- but couldn't always remember WHICH individual!
And it's so handy just to click View Name and see all the topics available.

I'm not sure I'm expaining this clearly, but I'd love to have any
thoughts/ideas/suggestions about how you handle background info.

Also, a related question -- when printing a book from Legacy, is it
possible to combine two separate databases in any way?

Re: [LegacyUG] Idea--an .fdb for background info? Plus book question.

2007-07-17 Thread Pat H
I originally had the two databases combined but separated them for some
reason. Perhaps in part because I had two unrelated Price families and that
was a nuisance.

There is almost no overlap between the two families, I am an only child with
no children of my own so I think that keeping them separate will work very
well for me.

Since I can't make a book from two databases, I think when the time comes
I'll just transfer info from the background file into the notes section for
a particular individual.

Still it seems to me one ought to be able to intersperse background info
with family data.

Actually the only problem comes with page numbering, table of contents and
indexing. I guess I'll cross those bridges when I get to them!

Thanks for your comments!

Hi Pat,

I'm a newcomer to the Legacy environment, but have been a researcher for
40 years, and have worked with computers since 1965. The issue of keeping
separate paternal, and maternal databases has cropped up many times, and
is almost always a habit carried over from when genealogical records were
kept on paper. Computers can easily keep track of such distinctions, so
why go to all the trouble of keeping separate databases? Our descendants
will only combine the two databases after we're gone anyway. G

Hi Pat,

That's an interesting idea - a database for background info.

However, I think for incorporation into a book, your background
information would have to be handled differently - like in the notes to
locations or attached to key individuals. But for reference, your idea
sounds good and obviously works for you.

Re combining two separate databases in a book

That's why I and many others suggest you have only one family file that
includes all your family. It's much easier to split a file for specific
purposes than it is to combine files.

It's also far easier to make sure that one database is updated than two
overlapping databases.

Maybe it's time you combined your paternal and maternal databases.

Linda, Are you at all willing to share or sell your source templates?? It
would be a great benefit for a lot of us!

Unfortunately, sourcing is one of Legacy's weak points. Personally, I do

use their preformatted reports at all. I have several basic reports set up

[LegacyUG] Help with box size for Family Group Record report

2007-07-26 Thread Pat Jones
Is there a way to change the size of the various boxes for events
when printing a Family Group Record repot?

I have, in the date column, 1883-Jan 1884. It looks fine on the
screen under the persons page; however, when I try to print it, I
get 1883-Jan 1~. I am assuming the ~ means there is
information that can't print within the box size.

I am using the fully updated, most recent version of Deluxe.

If there is no fix for this problem, I'd certainly like to see
one.

Thanks,

PJ

I don't know where to find the index tab. Would it be too much trouble to

Also I checked your blog, but I don't see where you have info about the

Pat,

From just after starting to use Legacy I put the married surname of a
woman in the AKAs as I realised the problem, so doing makes life easy. You
can also under the Index TabOptions set it to show married women's
surnames, so you can then just look through the Margarets; see also my
very recent answer to Valeris re the Blogs on my website.

If none of these methods satisfy the reason for asking the question then
perhaps you could say specifically what you actually wish to do with the
information and we may be able to come up with an answer.

When I go back to the previous screen (i.e., Research Guidance screen

So could you tell me what to click on in order to get to other amily

You can shrink the windows and display both the data and Legacy, but it
does take some thought so that both remain where you can use them. Another
idea, mentioned here yesterday, is to use a post-it note. You can google
for a computerized version.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures

2007-07-29 Thread Pat H
I have ScanSoft Omnipage Pro 15 and it converts many old documents that I've
scanned into my computer quite accurately. Then I copy the conversion (I
use Word Perfect) as unformatted text, make any additional corrections and
save it to a file or copy it into Legacy notes -- or sometimes I just copy
it directly into Legacy notes.

As you go along you are training it to recognize characters better.

Pat

Hi Everyone, I am still working on my pictures that I have in my Legacy
Data File. I really appreciated all your responses on how to convert my
BMP files to JPG files.
I have another question that I hope someone can help me out with, some of
the BMP files that I have in my program are scanned images of death
notices that I found in local newspapers, what I would like to be able to
do is to highlight the write-up on these BMP or JPG files, then copy and
paste the information into either the death notes field or in the notes
section of death notice event that I add to the person who has died, is
this possible? It would certainly save a lot of manual typing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Pat Jones
Don, and any other interested parties,

Not to be hard-nosed, but there is a difference between included
within a message and an attachment to a message. I was able
to cut and paste a picture of the EVENTS screen INSIDE the
message (not as an attachment to). In fact, if you take a good
hard look at my message, you can see the gap where the picture
was. There was NO attachment. Somehow, the software on the LUG
interpreted the inserted picture as an attachment. I'll let you
computer geniuses figure that one out. So Sherry, we might need
to add this escapade to the Etiquette info.

And as I said before, yes, I did make certain I was using Plain
text.

And now we know another quirk of the Users Group setup. 'Nug
said.

Any time you attach anything, picture, text file, html file or

arrives at everyone's mail box as an attachment.
You could put it on a web page and then include the web address

Re: [LegacyUG] Using EVENTS for census info WAS Linda Altman's census templates ;

2007-07-30 Thread Pat Jones
I think there would be too much information and it would either overflow the
little box/area used for description when printing a FAMILY Group Record or it
might force the little box so far that it would corrupt the date field. I have
had problems (see archives) with the date field when trying to print out the
Family Group Report. Everything looks good on the computer screen but doesn't
always dprint out that way. The problem involve trying to use a date like
from 1884-Jan 1886 or between 1884-Jan 1886. The Report would print out
okay if I changed it to read 1884-1886 but then to compensate for the now
missing information I had to find another place to add the reason for the Jan
1886 date. Not a great problem. It appears that the boxes under the Family
Group Report have a normal for the program setting and all BUT the Date
column will expand to some degree if the information contained is longer than
what the program is designed for. Hope you follow this, I can't find a better
way to explain it.

Why not use the (empty) description field for the Roll, Page Image info?

On 7/30/07, Pat Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I followed the advice of a very active and knowledgable local
Legacy user (and member of this group) when I first started using
Legacy about a year ago. She suggested that she used the notes
section under EVENTS for displaying the census information, i.e.

She added the full information for all parties shown in the
census for the Head of Household, continuing that way for each
census year the main party was found (in the case above, Robert
Marshall). As the children broke off and were found elsewhere,
they then became the head of their own household (even if single)
and had the full information listed under their name.

If you could look at my database, you would see that after I have
entered all this information under the Head of Household, under
the EVENTS notes for each individual in the census information
(in this case, Mary and all the children), I have listed ONLY the
information found for that individual.

PROs to this method: I have the full information at my
fingertips when I do research and don't have to look under the
scattered SOURCES. My database if designed for my optimal
research capabilities, NOT for conciseness. It also enables
anyone looking at my database to see the information at a glance.
This method had enabled me to find several pieces of information
that I was missing and couldn't find until I set the database up
this way. The census information prints out in chronological
order immediately below the name and general information for the
individual in the Family Group Record which I use most often.

CONs you have a lot of sources, which I don't mind at all; I use
the ibid feature to cut down on some of them. Not all Legacy
reports will set up this way; I wish I could get the Descendant
Report to set up like the Family Group Report, for instance. It
doesn't even allow Sources unfortunately - bad mistake in MHO.

I talked with Ken about this. When you export to a new Family File you've
just created a *new* file so of course the program would recognize the
entries as new.

Of course, a new file wouldn't have a history list or bookmarks

I understand the frustration of losing this if the export is necessary, but
I also understand the concept that a *new* file has been created!

We don't recommend this process lightly and sometimes there is no other way
for the damaged file to be repaired.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Something that I hate... each time you export to a new Legacy file, you
lose the Last Modified information for each person. Your new Legacy file
will show your Modified Date and Added Date as of the day of your export.
In additon, the Imported information for each person will be Yes, so you'll
not have this clue as to where the person's data came from. Hopefully it
will have been sourced.
That portion of your files becomes worthless for all time - you'll not know
WHEN you modified a persons personal data or their Marriage data.

I notice that some genealogy websites publish the email address but
substitute the word at for the @, which is supposed to make it more
difficult for spammers. As in johndoeataol.com.

I am in the process of removing e-mail addresses from my sources for
my Web site and Rootsweb database. I show the names of people who
e-mail me as the source and put their e-mail addresses in publication
facts. I have tested putting the e-mail address in double brackets,
and it appears to me that the double brackets remove the address from
Gedcoms and reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Searching Notes - exporting Notes, Events to gedcom

Susan, how does one export notes events (only?) to a .gedcom?

From: Susan Daily [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Another option, Pat, is to export all your notes and events to a
GEDCOM and search that in a text file. Then where you find it, you can
go back to your Legacy file and locate it. Cumbersome, but it works.

Susan, how does one export notes events (only?) to a .gedcom?

Click on:
File - Export to - GEDCOM File -

Make sure to include private info, in case it is tucked in there.
Set: Produce file for GEDCOM 5.5.

Click on:
Customize: You can remove anything you don't want, leaving just notes,
but since you are doing a search, I wouldn't bother. (You highlight
items on the right hand list, then click Remove .

If you do a lot of removing, and think you will search notes again, I
would save this export criteria by clicking Save List.

Click OK.
Make sure Record Selection at the bottom includes all records in file.

Click on top right, Select file name and start export. Open that file
in a text editor (MS Word or Notepad, for example) and do a search.

Does this work for you?

Re: [LegacyUG] About dates

2007-08-14 Thread Pat H
What do you do about sourcing info-- let's say you have a source for the
location but not for the date. How do you indicate it's YOUR guesstimate
and that the source is silent on the matter (since Legacy groups date
location together as far as sources go for births, deaths, etc)?

From: Mitch Mackrory [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For example, once I have a child (any child) in a family, I assume it
is the eldest child and that the parents were likely married a year
prior to this. Let's say the child was born in 1856. I set the date
for the marriage as BEF 1855. I now have some information to do
further work on. I would record this with a Surety Level of 1
(marginal evidence). Let's assume that this helps me find the family
and I now figure out that there were two older children born in 1852
and 1855. I would now change the marriage date to BEF 1851 and I may
change my Surety Level to 2 (probable conclusion) if I am happy this
is the whole family. If this helps me narrow down when to look for
the marriage record, this is useful. Let's say I now find the index
record of the marriage record. I'll use UK terminology since that is
what I work on. I find an index record dated in the second quarter of
1850 and it looks good. I'll record this index info in the marriage
and likely change my marriage date to Jun Q 1850; possibly even
updating my Surety Level to 3 (Almost Certain Conclusion). When I get
a copy of the certificate, let's say there are witnesses that confirm
this is the right marriage. At that stage my marriage date changes to
14 Apr 1850 and my Surety Level might even go to 4 (Convincing
Evidence).

If I came across other evidence I may change my date to AFT or ABT,
but I always try to estimate a reasonable date as soon as I can and
then classify that assessment using the Surety Level system in Legacy.

Note that if my marriage date is BEF 1851 as an example, I will likely
start searching the marriage records from 1853 and work backwards for
20 plus years.

Also, once I have the marriage date fixed I move on to census records
(for example) to confirm that the decisions I have made are correct.

I hope that helps, Mitch Mackrory

If I look at the index I could have 7 John CULLODENS so it is helpful to

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Question...

2007-08-14 Thread Pat H
I think it was on the laminated 4-page source citations by Mills that she
also put the name she had searched for in the documentation. I'm not sure
why that is necessary if you're including details as to page number, family
number, and if the name searched is the same as the name found.

And often I find people (e.g., other families) I wasn't even searching for
anyway.

Now *that's* a good reason. When reading films ordered from the Canadian
National Archives or the FHL I've often wondered if different copies of
the

same film could be better. From what I've seen so far, though, there's
nothing in Mills about recording the film copy number in the source
citation. Maybe that's something to consider. Of course, I'm only on p.
50
of 'Evidence Explained' and it's a big book so perhaps she's already
thought

of it.

Very interesting comment. Thanks.

[LegacyUG] Reinstalling Legacy

2007-08-18 Thread Pat Hickin

QUESTION: What to download?

BACKGROUND: I was having many problems with my computer (Dell) and had to
reset it or whatever (Dell took over control so this was done remotely)
and thereby lost all my programs.

I had done a backup of everything in June, but for this I just backed up
folders with new information. So I both backed up -- and also copied-- to
an external hard drive the Legacy folder on my C drive (which of course
includes my data folders).

I have been unable to use the Restore Wizard from the Backup (at a certain
stage it tells me to click on something --a tab, button,or window-I forget
which-- that is not there).

So, I need to download a new version of Legacy.
(Incidentally, I do not have a copyof the original key I used to unlock
the Deluxe features.)

BACK TO QUESTION: So should I just go ahead and download and update the
standard version of Legacy?
OR should I go ahead and pay for the Deluxe version since I then won't have
to pay for Legacy 7 when it comes out?

I'll REALLY appreciate your advice!

Thanks!

Pat H.

[LegacyUG] Default browser etc in OptionsCustomizeLaunch

2007-08-29 Thread Pat Hickin
Lately, when I access the Internet directly from Legacy, I get a message
saying I don't have a default browser.

It tells me to go to the Customize section of Legacy and click the Launch
tab.

I don't know WHY it doesn't tell me to click on OptionsCustomizeLaunch.
(As so often happens, Legacy Help skips the first couple of things you need
to click on.)

At any rate, I found Launch without too much difficulty, but I don't have
the faintest idea what to put in -- there is no list of the available
browsers.

PLUS it tells us to leave each option BLANK to use the default.
So if I do enter a name, it automatically becomes the ALTERNATE and NOT the
default.

Why does the message give me instructions for going to a place where I can
enter the ALTERNATE but not the DEFAULT??

So where DO I enter the default? and how, e.g. IE7 or do I have to write it
out? Do I give the version number etc.?

Thanks!

Pat

Re: [LegacyUG] Default browser etc in OptionsCustomizeLaunch

2007-08-30 Thread Pat Hickin
Dave,
Thanks so much. Windows told me to go to IE (if it had 4,5,6 and gave no
instructions for 7, which is what I have). IE says it is NOT my default
browser; Firefox says it IS my default browser. Which is the way I want it.

However, when I click ANY link in ANY email, NOTHING happens (includes those at
the bottom of your email). I have to cut and paste the url.

On the other hand, when I'm on an Internet site, the browser DOES go to the
site I click on. Though of course there are times when the url is not shown,
but the message says, e.g. click here to go to . . . and I click on here but
nothing will happen; at other times I'm taken to wherever without a problem. I
haven't been very observant about when this does/does not happen.

Should you respond to this off-list? Or should I just try to get help from
MicroSoft or Legacy Support and not bother you!!?

My computer does weird things anyway (when I was typing the preceding line, it
wanted to do it in all-caps. I had to put the cap locks key ON to get it to
type lowercase. This and other paragraphs worked just as they should in re
cap/lc!!!)

Also, in Legacy when I click on InternetLegacy Home Page and get the no
default browser message, and click on OK, nothing happens -- whereas it used
to go ahead and take me to the Home Page anyway (same with the other Internet
options).

SO-O-O, I decided to go ahead and put in Firefox as my ALTERNATE BROWSER in
Legacy's OptionsCustomizeLaunch. However, even though I can put my cursor in
the Alternate Web Browser space, and get a flashing straight vertical line, it
will not accept single character I type. If I click on the Launch button,
nothing happens. If I click on the Change button, I am taken to a folder I
created L_MULTIMEDIA BU, which is in another folder I created 1L BU
20060808-1248, which is in the Data folder inside the Legacy folder, which
is directly on my C drive rather than inside my Program Files. SO-O-O I don't
know HOW to enter a default browser.

It's entered in your operating system (Windows?), but this sounds

What happens if you click on one of the links at the bottom of this

If it does then you have a default browser and Legacy should be using

[LegacyUG] Email accounts, pdfs--suggested options

2007-09-02 Thread Pat Hickin
I have 2 Outlook Express email acct's on 2 separate IDs. The first one
(MainID) started getting too much SPAM so I added a 2nd ID (and email
address), which is where I get email from cousins, friends, and Legacy.

But when I send an email from LC it goes out from my Main ID. That's not
where I want the Sent Mail stored and it's not the email address I want the
LC chart recipients to respond to. Can Legacy add an option so that we can
choose the email account we want to use?

I also agree we ought to be able to save a chart to a .pdf BEFORE choosing
to email it. I might want to create several .pdfs and then choose among
them also to send Chart 3 to Cousin A and Charts 1 3 to Cousin B, etc.

Should you respond to this off-list? Or should I just try to get help
from MicroSoft or Legacy Support and not bother you!!?

My computer does weird things anyway (when I was typing the preceding
line, it wanted to do it in all-caps. I had to put the cap locks key ON
to get it to type lowercase. This and other paragraphs worked just as they
should in re cap/lc!!!)

Also, in Legacy when I click on InternetLegacy Home Page and get the no
default browser message, and click on OK, nothing happens -- whereas it
used to go ahead and take me to the Home Page anyway (same with the other
Internet options).

SO-O-O, I decided to go ahead and put in Firefox as my ALTERNATE BROWSER
in Legacy's OptionsCustomizeLaunch. However, even though I can put my
cursor in the Alternate Web Browser space, and get a flashing straight
vertical line, it will not accept single character I type. If I click on
the Launch button, nothing happens. If I click on the Change button, I
am taken to a folder I created L_MULTIMEDIA BU, which is in another
folder I created 1L BU 20060808-1248, which is in the Data folder
inside the Legacy folder, which is directly on my C drive rather than
inside my Program Files. SO-O-O I don't know HOW to enter a default
browser.
It sounds very much as if you have operating system problems, possibly a
virus or spyware. If you
know someone who is competent in the area have them go over your PC for you.
If you do not have
such a friend download and run AVG free virus scanner and AdAware. You can
google for download
sites and just follow the included directions. Also, you stated you use
FireFox. Under tools
options Main make sure that the box at the bottom is checked to always
check if FireFox is the

default browser then hit check now.

[LegacyUG] Source Citation-Recorded Date

2007-09-02 Thread Pat Hickin

I don't understand the recorded date on the Source info window.

I am working with the 1880 census for VA, B County, which I have used on at
least 1 previous occasion. Now I am using info from the same census on a
different person. So under recorded date I had entered the date I first
used the source. Now I am recording different info and so I want to change
the recorded date.

But when I change the date, I am asked if I want to change the recorded
date for all references to the master source, or do I want a new copy of
the master source.

Well, the answer is neither--I just want to change the recorded date for
the info I'm recording now, today. I do NOT want it to change the recorded
date for all references to the master source, NOR do I want a new copy of
the master source in my list of sources.

Obviously, I don't understand the term. So, I click on help, enter
recorded date in the
word(s) to search for the meaning of the term and am given a list of
NINETY-THREE TOPICS!!

Can somebody tell me what this recorded date is supposed to be FOR?? (Of
course, when I get to the Detail window there's another place where it says
recorded date and has a Today's Date button to click on. This is NOT the
window I'm talking about now, but since the same term of recorded date
appears in both windows, I would conclude they're both referring to the same
information. It doesn't quite make sense to me.)

And I doubt that I'm quite making sense too! But thanks for any help!

Pat

I have 2 Outlook Express email acct's on 2 separate IDs. The first one

address), which is where I get email from cousins, friends, and Legacy.

I want to tag every individual in my database who was born in

[LegacyUG] Privatizing help needed

Thanks Ron. I'd like to post my database on Ancestry (it's been
on Rootsweb for years). After I submit a complete GEDCOM (not
privatized), Rootsweb allows me to control what will and will not
be shown and I don't show anyone who was born in 1910 or after
unless there is a death date for them. Unfortunately Ancestry
doesn't give me that kind of control so I've never sent them a
GEDCOM Legacy will let me fix the database so that I can outwit
Ancestry (I hope).

Re: [LegacyUG] How to List a Location

Is there a website for European, etc., countries that shows correct location
names, depending on date? (I feel sure there's not as it would be far too
complicated -- ) but I suppose there could be some for particular areas --
e.g., the former Holy Roman Empire (that would be a challenge in itself).
Does anyone know??

Keith,

I'm not sure if I can fully answer your question, but a couple of bits of
info that might help.

First, the umlaut in German is there to indicate a slight change of
pronunciation over the pure vowel. When the umlaut cannot be reproduced for
whatever reason the correct spelling is to add an 'e' after the vowel with
the umlaut. That means that your town should be spelt Büchig or Buechig.

If you speak German this site may be of use (and there are some photos at
the bottom of the page): http://ka.stadtwiki.net/B%C3%BCchig_%28Stutensee%29

This site implies that Buechig is a suburb (Stadtteil) of a town called
Blankenloch which in itself is a part of a greater town conglomeration
(Großen Kreisstadt) of Stutensee. This is within what we would probably call
in the UK the borough council area of Karlsruhe (Landkreis).

I didn't get the map out, but I am sure you will find a cluster of smaller
villages or towns around Stutensee, which is then the administrative
town/city for the area.

My vote for how to reference it would be:

Blankenloch (Buechig), Karlsruhe, Baden-Wuerttenburg, Germany

but of course it depends which time period you are talking about since
Germany didn't really exist as one entity until the end of the C19th (and of
course its borders have been redrawn several times since then). The addition
of Kahlsruhe and Germany to the above reference probably only make sense in
a C20th context, for instance.

Hope these thoughts help,
Claire

Germany (again with the Umlaut U). BUT the GeoLocation List in LEGACY does
not like that! When I examine the political structure of Germany - I find

Buchig is a DISTRICT in the

[LegacyUG] Searching Master Sources

2007-09-07 Thread Pat Hickin

Can someone tell me how to search for a source entitled DLW Database?

I have tried to find the answer in Help AND in the Archives but as usual I
can't find how to do that.

I don't know how I have it entered inb the Source List name -- but,
unfortnately, not so that it begins with either 'DLW' or the compiler's
name.

I know this has already been addressed on the list but I don't know how to
find it.

In Legacy, when I click on Search I can't see how to search the sources.

I think someone said we have to export the bibliography/sources as a text
file, but I don't see how to export the sources.

Thanks for any help!!

Try Search and Replace Find where: Source-Title - Find what: DLW
Database and if no succes try other Source fields.

(Don't replace anything but to be sure make the Replacement text the
same as the Find what text and choose the option Replace only found

This may help. I suggested it to for two friends of mine, and both say
it works well for them. It is a magnifier, and I noticed when you use
it, sometimes graphics are a little out of focus, but you can certainly
read all the text quite well. It is a virtual magnifying glass, and
works on the screen. If you want to research this, go to:
http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/
From what I see, there isn't a cost to this, but I did not check
everything. If you can see the screen comfortably, you will enjoy Legacy
even more.

I use it when I make CAD drawings.

Looks like it increases the size of the text quite well. Hope it helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] To be a Lumper or a Splitter

2007-09-09 Thread Pat Hickin
On Lumping vs Splitting -- sorry I'm way behind on my Legacy email -- I may do
both.
One thing I am DEFINITELY a splitter on is using GenForum--I list (e.g.)
Doe Family Genforum #216
Doe Family Genforum #341
Doe Family Genforum #562

That way I can easily quickly see whether I have already used and incoporated
info from that particular posting (and the individuals to whom I have added the
data). And it's NOT especially time-consuming to do that in the first place --
if I'm going to add a new post, say Doe Family Genforum #442, I'll just
highlight #341, click Edit, enter changes as needed, click Save and when I am
asked whether I want to change the Master Source or Save to a new source, I
choose the latter.

I can't imagine entering all the author, title, and publication info into the
Detail--wouldn't I have to enter it all over again rather than just make
changes in existing info that is already on the screen??

And how would I find whether I'd already used that particular posting?

I handle censuses much the same way.

[LegacyUG] UPSET BY MESSAGES?? -- SUGGESTION for procedure.

2007-09-11 Thread Pat Hickin
I notice that whenever I click on reply, the email address of the emailer is
displayed. SO-O-O if we don't like the tone of that emailer's email, why
don't we have a rule that we (as individuals) will address the emailer
directly rather than sending the message to the entire group??

We could still manually enter [LegacyUG] at the beginning of the subject
line and write a message rule so that it would go into the Legacy folder in
our email programs (rather than into SPAM).

I imagine that in our lives all of us have gotten irritated at some point
and said something rude -- and felt totally justified in expressing our
anger -- and sooner (or) later when we calmed down regretted the expression
of the irritation.

And I feel pretty certain that every one of us has intentionally -- or
inadvertently -- irritated someone else (e.g., using html because it's more
interesting or prettier and not realizing the technical reasons that we we
shouldn't use it for mailing lists).

So if someone wants to inform someone else of that kind -- or any other
kind -- of mistake, why not just email that one individual?

If it's something that a LOT of us are doing, then of course it would be
appropriate to send a (preferably COURTEOUS) message to the entire group.

And if we're angry about something at the time we write the message, perhaps
we could just save it and read it again the next day and perhaps edit it
before sending it.

When I'm feeling perfectly calm and happy and then read an angry or abusive
email I find it difficult to return to a happy frame of mind -- and then I
might take my annoyance out on somebody else -- I'm sure I've sent off some
annoyed emails, but I for one hereby resolve from henceforth to try to keep
it from creeping into my emails.

If we want more conflict in our lives, all we have to do is to turn on the
news!

[LegacyUG] Bibliography Leg v 6.0.0.155

2007-09-11 Thread Pat Hickin

This is a pretty elementary question, but I don't seem to be able to find
the answer.

In Legacy 6.0.0.155, in our list of sources, the present format begins with
a sort of nickname for the source. (no prescribed format)

The sources are grouped in alphabetical order by this nickname.

That is, the sources are not grouped by type; and then alphabetized by
author's last name (to grossly over-simplify), as would typically be the
case.

So my question is how DO I get to a view of sources in a standard form -- in
other words, how do I see what the bibliography will look like (I
assuming entries WILL be in a standard form) if I do a Legacy book?

Does this make sense? I'm afraid I'm overlooking something that is VERY
obvious to everybody else!!

I like your idea of putting the type at the beginning of the Source name.

Well, as you say, we'll just have to wait for Leg 7 (wait, hope, and pray)!

Really, we need to be able to sort sources much in the same way a library

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Bibliography Leg v 6.0.0.155

Hi Pat, I think (and hope) the full/formal bibliography feature will
be coming with v7, so help will be on the way. With v6, though, there
is no way I have found to do a formal bibliography other than
exporting the data to an external program and working on it there.

It would be great if the new sourcing templates allowed you to sort
first by source type. For now, I use the Source List Name field
(the one not printed in the output) to list a source type first and
then give a name for it. However, the source lists still prints with
comma as separators instead of periods and does not sort the way a
standard bibliography would.

The term source type can also be confusing. Would that be book vs.
media, original court record vs. microfilm at archives, etc? We
almost need two fields, one for media type and another for source
type. Sometimes I have two distinct sources in Legacy for a single
cemetery: one for the photo I took while visiting and another for the
entries I found in an online database at the same cemetery (when I
forgot to take the photo during the visit). To me, they are the same
source type (i.e. cemetery), but different media types (visit or photo
vs. database).

This whole discussion may not be needed for long, though, with v7
coming out some time this year.

This is a pretty elementary question, but I don't seem to be able to find

In Legacy 6.0.0.155, in our list of sources, the present format begins
with

a sort of nickname for the source. (no prescribed format)

The sources are grouped in alphabetical order by this nickname.

That is, the sources are not grouped by type; and then alphabetized by
author's last name (to grossly over-simplify), as would typically be the
case.

So my question is how DO I get to a view of sources in a standard form --
in

other words, how do I see what the bibliography will look like (I
assuming entries WILL be in a standard form) if I do a Legacy book?

Does this make sense? I'm afraid I'm overlooking something that is VERY
obvious to everybody else!!

I have a couple of individuals with 3+ parents which are many unknown
entries.

I have tried unlinking the individuals from all the unknowns in the parent
line but it does not seem to work.

If anyone understands what I am trying to say and can advise how to fix
this I would be most grateful.

It means on a gedcom I end up with more individuals than families.

[LegacyUG] attaching .pdf files instead of photo

2007-09-13 Thread Pat Hickin
I am very confused. I thought we were supposed to attach a .pdf file (as
opposed to a picture) in Legacy in the following manner.

Save the .pdf to a folder.
In Legacy click on the picture iconclick on Sound
Browse to the folder that has the .pdf file
To find it, click on All files
Open it
Fill in Legacy caption info etc.
click OK

It displays a picture that says Sound!!
So how do I vision the .pdf??

Am I utterly confused?

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplex Printing for Books

2007-09-15 Thread Pat Hickin

If not you can print the odd

pages then turn the stack over and print the even pages on the back of the
corresponding odd pages.

Not all printers have that option (e.g., mine) -- however it will print
duples, which of course is the same thing. But I have had a printer that
would do neither.

Thad,

You do not say, but I trust that you have set Legacy to duplex print and
horizontal *and* set your printer to print in duplex as well. If so you
should not have a problem.

Can someone please tell me how to print books on both sides of the page
(duplex printing)? After setting up what I want to print and checking the
duplex box in the print page, I still get printing on only one side of the
page. Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sort Number Portion Numerically?

2007-09-18 Thread Pat Hickin
I am just now reading some old messages on Legacy UG and I am not
understanding something basic -- why would anybody have a picture filename
that is just a number? I sort pictures by name of subject--and type of
subject matter. Obviously I'm missing something, including the beginning of
this discussion.

Rob:
This is not a Legacy problem. It is a Windows / computer feature.
If you want the files to sort correctly you will need to use something
like

this:

MS0001 - file name.tif
MS0010 - file name.tif
MS0100 - file name.tif
MS0002 - file name.tif
MS0020 - file name.tif
MS0200 - file name.tif
MS0003 - file name.tif
MS0030 - file name.tif

The trick is to use the same number of digits each time. Your name scheme
basically uses a blank after the digit and that is why it gets sorted
early.

However, when trying to attach a file/picture to a Master Source, Legacy
lists the files in this manner below. Trying to find the right one is a

MS1 - file name.tif
MS100 - file name.tif
MS1000 - file name.tif
MS2 - file name.tif
MS200 - file name.tif
MS2000 - file name.tif
MS3 - file name.tif
MS300 - file name.tif
MS3000 - file name.tif

Is there a way to tweak Legacy to get the Load Picture window to sort
Number Portion numerically like the File ID Assistant window does with
File
ID's?

Thanks!

Subject: [LegacyUG] European Locations

I really like Family Atlas, it seems to have a very complete list of
locations for Europe, and it a good a good mapping program. I like its
Nearby Places feature, where I can enter a place name, radial distance,
get a list of locations, sort them by distance of place name, and save the
list as a spreadsheet. Their data base is over 3M locations.

It's the only program I've found with these features. Their web page is:

Wish Legacy would add their features to the next release? Legacy gives
you
a Nearby Places list, but there is no way to save it. You have to copy
it

by hand.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting sources

2007-09-19 Thread Pat Hickin
Sorry, slow reading my email. The sources are there, Wendy, just need them
to be better organized, more uniform/consistent, etc. I just don't want to
move components around, etc., and then want to do it differently once I have
v7. But there are a lot of things I could do without a problem, I think.
I'm very much a splitter so there may be a lot to do.

If you don't include your sources now, as you enter your data, will you
remember each and every item you've entered that needs a source attached
by the time you acquire v7, to go back and add it? I know I wouldn't.

If I were you, I would either (a) attach source information as the data is
entered regardless of what version is being used, or (b) hold off entering
anything new until v7 is installed. I wouldn't rely on remembering to go
back and include the source information at a later date.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
