the end of line ancestor(s) you will get both male and female 
descendants and you will not have control of the order in which the FGR 
reports will print.


Sorry, I was wrong in assuming you could control the order in a batch. I 
just tried my suggestion and selected two individuals by name in a focus 
group but they did not print in the order selected.


I now suggest you set up your report using the publication centre where 
you can add multiple FGR reports in a specific order.

If you want to turn on the option for Legacy to make a list of your 
files, you need to go to Options > Customise 12.5. Click the button and 
then go to the Messages tab at the bottom and change the option there.

Thanks for this Carolyn but I am in a huge MESS.

Some of you have tried to help me before but I am here now to FIX IT 
ALL please ?


I appear to have .ged’s everywhere. When I do a windows key .ged I get 
9 full pages of various record types – please excuse me if I am not 
using the correct terminology.


On these 9 pages I have the following:

GED file

Text documents

Microsoft word documents

Compressed (zipped) Folders

Microsoft Excel Worksheets

And some other odd “ things “

Some of these .ged’s do not appear in the list when you try and File – 
Open but with File – import there are some there as well as some folders.

Hi Valerie,

With the GEDCOM, download it to your home screen or a folder, then 
IMPORT it as a new file in Legacy.


That way you can check it out before and if you  want to merge it with 
another Legacy file.


Sorry I can't help you with DNA Painter, or the HR Pavilion, but Mrs 
Google can answer most questions, she will often point you to a You 
Tube video which IO find very helpful.

The new update of Legacy has added a new check for Duplicate Marriages. 
Some of them will prove to be legitimate and some will not.

eg a couple may have married, divorced and then remarried.
Or you may have someone linked to RIN 0 more than once as you have 
baptisms records that they had two children but don't know whether the 
other parent was the same or not. Old baptism registers often just give 
the father and you can't assume the same spouse given how many women 
died in childbirth and their husbands remarried. And when they just give 
the mother for several children - was the father the same person? I have 
at least 5 valid duplicates in my file.
If you discover you have valid Duplicate Marriages, then mostly in the 
future run Check/Repair with the checkbox re Duplicate Marriages 
unchecked. Especially if you find you had duplicates that weren't valid, 
periodically run it with that Checkbox checked.


In your case you have two Unknown-Unknown relationships. You will likely 
find that they have no other information and you should simply unlink 
the child they are linked to and get rid of them.
You find them by going to View > Marriage List and finding the Marriages 
with MRINs 17923 and 10978
Select them one at a time and see who they are connected to. If they're 
connected to no-one, just unlink.
If they actually have marriage information then you'll need to re-find 
one of the names. They may have been lost in an import or a merge.

Andrew,
You can use Detailed Search or you can use the Missing Information tab.
You can use the Missing Information tab and then use Detailed search for 
your second criteria and use the Only search the search list option.


There is no problem at all searching for any field using either equal 
to  [blank] meaning don't enter anything OR not equal to [blank]
If you want everyone who has an entry in the field, then you use "not 
equal to".  If you want everyone with nothing in that field you use 
"equal to"
When you are using two conditions in Detailed Search, think carefully 
about whether you want them connected by AND or by OR.
If you are using three conditions, unless they are all connected by AND 
or all connected by OR, I find it easier to do two searches and in the 
second only search the search list as I never remember the order in 
which the search is done. Read the help if you want to do a search with 
3 conditions and a mix of AND and OR. It's complicated and doesn't work 
the way my mind works.

Any help appreciated…

I bet someone out there knows this answer and has battled as I have 
with many, many combinations with incorrect results…


I want to find all individuals that have a Find A Grave ID field 
populated, but no Burial Date or Location.


So: in Detailed Search, I tried this:

    Find Individual with Find A Grave ID Contains ?

AND

    Individual Burial Place Equal “”

Doesn’t work. Tried Contains, Not Equal and various character tricks, 
but nothing! Once I get the trick of the “field is blank” then I’m 
good.  But how is this done ?


I see I could do it with 2 searches, first with Missing Information on 
Burial fields, then search for FaG IDs with data.  Just thought 1 
search would be cleanest that I can save and retrieve is much more 
re-usable.  Then I can quickly snag the FaG ID and then fill in burial 
details later (with this search to give me my to do list).


Ideas please?

Thanks Jenny.  I was focusing on the Burial Location, which the 'Equal' to
 doesn't seem to work.  Trust me!

The Burial Date equal  is certainly a good step forward.  Thanks a
bunch!

If anyone has figured out a way to search for blank location fields with
Detailed Search, please let me know.  Then I can add an OR Location to this
useful search.

How much information do you want in the Report?  If you simply want a 
list of the names of all the people buried in a particular cemetery, 
highlight that entry in the Master Locations list, then under "People 
using this location" select List Options... and then Print List...


For more detailed information, from List Options... select Create 
Search List... and open it.  Select Options, then Print... and you 
will have various options to choose from to set up what you want to 
print and layout.

This is a bit of a guess, but possibly you need to

1.Identify all of the individuals that are in the cemetery and then 
tag them. Hopefully you can do that through the search and create a list 
of people, then options and advanced tagging followed by Everyone in 
Search List and put a tag then them.


2.From Publishing Centre, select Individual Report and then set that 
to process everyone with the tag set. I needed to set it up, and then 
close and reopen the publishing centre to get it to work.

Cynthia, there is no difference in the downloads for the basic (free) 
version of Legacy and the Deluxe version.  You simply install the basic 
version and then unlock the Deluxe features by entering your Customer 
Number (you get this from Legacy when you pay for the Deluxe version). 
Look for Unlock Deluxe in the File menu.

One thing I do want to add here, that I didn't see mentioned is that as a
new user there is a learning curve. It's not bad, you just have to learn
about all the options because Legacy IS so versatile that you'll discover
new things you can do even after you are familiar with it. Personally, I've
tried all of them, mostly because I needed them to convert files from users
who used other software, but Legacy is my one true love. The people here
are knowledgeable and friendly. Help is only an email away and this list is
how things were done with the internet in the 1990s and lists are easiest
for most of us who are not chatty, such as yourself.

I just wanted to add that when you add the child, be sure to make notes
each time you add something so that way, you'll know why you entered it the
way you did. Trust me, memory fails. Try to standardize the way you work
too. For example, when I am adding people and make notes, those go under
research notes. When I tell something special about them that isn't an
event, per say, I write it in the regular notes of an individual. I also
attach them to my To Do's if there is anything I need to do at all. Even
checking census records.

Good luck! I think you'll find that though we are not blood related, it's
like a family here.

Thanks to everyone who is helping me.

I didn’t think Jenny was being rude, either.  Thank you, Jenny, for your great 
advice.  And Brian, and Lewis, and Art  and Ronald.

I have started looking through the videos, but, boy, they sure are in depth.

I downloaded the pdf file and it has tons of information in it, too.

I was hoping that I could read through entries in a forum….like the Microsoft 
forums, or the Word or Excel forums.  They usually jump right to the crux of 
what I need…saving me having to wade through tons of valuable information.

I chose Legacy because it is so versatile.  I have lots of photos to post and 
family information dating back to the 1500s that my mother compiled when she 
was alive.  Some of our ancestors had up to 12 children, and each of them has a 
branch of the tree.

I’m entering them, and solving how to enter them, one person at a time.

So…..thank you all again.

Nothing but good things from all of you, and I so very, very much appreciate 
the help getting this project underway.

You can add the boy's mother as a non-married partner of your son, and 
then add the boy as a child of that couple.  When you are looking at 
your son and his wife as a couple, the boy will appear as a 
half-offspring of that couple.


In Family View, with your son's record open, click on the first icon on 
the left under his details.  If you hover your mouse pointer over this 
icon, you will see it's labelled Spouses.  It will open a screen where 
you can add a "wife" to your son, or add a new "wife" if you have 
already entered your son's legal wife.


When you enter the lady's details you will be led to a Marriage Screen 
where you can tick a box to show that the couple never married.  Again 
in Family View, with your son and the child's mother showing as a couple 
(if his wife is showing, click his Spouse icon and select the other 
lady) add their son.


I hope that's clear enough, but don't hesitate to come back.

By the way, if you open the Help menu, then select Help Index, among the 
offerings on the right side of the screen you will see Tutorial Lessons.

Jim,

1. Go to your son and his wife (I presume if you have them entered you 
show their marriage with the two children).
Look for the spouses Icon below his name it will look like the head and 
shoulders of a single person. Under the name will be a small number 1 if 
he is only linked to his wife.

2. Click that Icon to open his list of spouses.
3. Click on Add New Wife, If you have the partner in your file click the 
link to an EXISTING person, if not click on Add a NEW person.
If linking you will see the Name List where you can choose the partner, 
if adding you will get an Individual Data screen where you can add her 
name, birth etc. details.
4. In the Name List find the partner and click select with her name 
highlighted. In the Individual screen enter all that you know about the 
partner and click Save.
5. In either case the next screen should be the marriage information. In 
the upper left click the box for this couple did not marry. In the date 
and place boxes I would enter the date they first started living 
together as well as the place where that occurred. If you do not know 
that it is okay to leave those blank.

6. Save the "marriage" details.
7. You should see the spouse list again but now there will be two people 
listed. Select the partner's name and click select.
8. Either add your son's child as a new person or again use link to 
existing if you have already entered the child's name, birth etc.


Now your son should have two marriages, one to the common law partner 
with their child and one to his legal wife with their two children.

Forums I have used in the past had a website where you asked questions, got

If I understand your diagram MRIN 3319 and MRIN 3339 include only Thomas 
with no wife or Child. To fix those you only need to remove the MRINs.

Go to Thomas @ Margery  in Family view
Open the Marriage List and click in the husband box at the top of the 
screen to sort all Thomas' MRINs together.

Select MRIN 3319 in the list and click on the Select button.
Right click in the marriage box and select Remove the Marriage Link. 
Click Yes in the confirmation window.


Repeat for MRIN 3339.

Now you will only have MRIN 1371. If that family does not include your 
bolded John, click in the children area and select link to an existing 
son. Find John in the name list, click on his name to highlight him and 
click the select button.


You will now have Thomas with only one wife and they will have John as 
their son.


Check that John (if he should have his own son John) has that son.

Now that the right people are all linked correctly you can go to 
yourself and set relationships.


With yourself selected in Family View go to Tools > Set Relationships
Click Set Relationships to recalculate the relationships of everyone in 
your file to you.


You will get the warning to redo this any time you delete someone from 
your file because that missing person may break links and change 
relationships.


P.S. When you find that people are incorrectly showing in family views 
but the person is correctly included in your file it is best to unlink 
that person from the incorrect family or spouse then find the correct 
family group and add then by linking to an existing person. The only 
time you should delete someone is when you know that they are not 
someone you want in your file.

Did you not find the right topic in the Index, or not understand what 
you read?  The topic is under Relationship, Set.


From time to time, as you add new people, you need to tell Legacy to 
re-calculate how these people are related to (or to someone else, if you 
wish to know that.)  It's very easy to do.


If you are the starting person (it will say Self above your name in 
Family View) first go to your own record.  Then open the Tools menu and 
select Set Relationships.  You should see your name in the top box.  You 
probably don't need to change any of the options.  Just click the Set 
Relationships button.


Now Legacy has worked out how everyone is related to you and will 
display the relationships above their names in Family View, if you have 
chosen to have this display.

What you can and may wish to do, is link the children of the first wife 
to your niece and her husband.  You will be told when you do so that the 
children are already linked to another family but that's ok.  You can 
then enter, for each child, Relationship to Father as Biological and 
Relationship to Mother as Step.  Now on the Family screen the children 
will not appear as Step and will show up as Descendants in your family 
line.  If you view the Descendants of the husband the children will 
appear twice, once for each wife.

to change Relationships to parents, come back to us.

The reason they do not show on your sister and current husband's group sheet is 
because they are not both of their natural children. I like to keep children 
with their natural parents unless the children are legally adopted.
Like most other things with computers there is a work-around. You add them as 
children in your sister's current marriage, then merge each one so there is 
only one record per marriage. Make sure to add notes so that someone not 
intimately familiar with the family will understand the relationship.

Actually its quite simple to accomplish what you want.  Create your PDF report 
in Legacy then use a free, open source program called PDFsam Basic (stands for 
PDF split and merge) to append your pdf files to your Legacy report.  I use 
this program often and have never had a problem.  You can download it at 
https://pdfsam.org/downloads/.  Just get the Basic, its all you'll need.

Leon has given you a great work flow - but I wouldn't resize your 
pictures that small. Also make absolutely sure you are resizing copies. 
I go for 2 to 3 times larger. Even for thumbnails in Reports, if you go 
beyond including small pics and want someday to commercially print any 
reports/books, then you need more pixels.
You also need more pixels if you ever take advantage of the Sliding 
picture show for family gatherings.

No, Win 10 works just fine with the MS help system and therefore Legacy 9's
help file.

 

Have you checked the Legacy 9 install directory to see that Legacy Help
(Legcay9.chm) is present? The default install location is probably
c://Program Files (x86)/Legacy9. You will find the Legacy9.chm file in that
Legacy9 folder.

cite that master Source for his Name and Birth date/place.  You select 
Bloggs Family Tree as the Master Source and enter detail specific to Joe 
Bloggs in the Source Detail fields.  Then you move on to entering the 
Death date for John Smith.  You again select the Bloggs Family Tree as 
the Master Source but this time enter what is specific to John Smith in 
the Source Details.

I have been on the LUG email list for a number of years and the issue of how 
to cite sources or which template to use constantly comes up. I am fairly 
pedantic but when it comes to sources I agree with Geoff Rasmussen- the most 
important thing is, for readers to know what the source is and where to find 
it.


I have cited everything from engraving on a Baptismal cup, to copies of Nazi 
documents provided and translated by the International Tracing Service. It 
is impossible to have a template for everything but Legacy has many to 
choose from. I pick the closest to what is appropriate. I also try to be as 
consistent as possible. You can also add text or comments to any citation to 
ensure readers know everything necessary.

It is a very pricey book, $76.  There is a quick sheet offered by Legacy that 
covers a lot of the sources that are frequently cited, I think it is well under 
$10.
I too have problems with how exactly to cite a source, it gets very confusing

and/or purchase the entire book.  You may be able to find prior versions

There's nothing wrong with using Basic Sources.

The most important thing to get your head around is Master Sources and 
Source Detail. Together they provide everything you or someone else 
needs to know to find the source (or to know why they can't find it 
because it's from a document/Family Bible/etc that you own or saw when 
you visited Uncle John.)

A book is easy.
The book is the Master source and the page is the Source Detail.
But what about something you find on FamilySearch?
The easiest way to source FamilySearch data is to create a Basic Source 
with the Master Source just saying FamilySearch in the Source List Name 
(which is your finding aid for refinding a Master Source) and 
FamilySearch in the Title.
Then you can copy and paste the FamilySearch source to the Source Detail 
- sometimes it will fit in the Source Detail box but often it's too 
long, so put it in the Source Detail Comment and checkmark that to be 
included. The transcription is copy and pasted into the Source Detail 
text and not normally included in the citation.

The same can be done with the source that Ancestry provides.

With the SourceWriter simply remember that you don't have to put 
something in every available box. These are general templates that don't 
always apply.


For online databases and online databases with original images, you can 
use the SourceWriter internet templates for these.
The name of the particular database goes in the Master Source. In the 
source detail something like "entry for Joe Bloggs" and in the credit 
line - where Ancestry etc got the information.
This can be more useful than putting all Ancestry sources into one 
Master Source. It's an advanced step but you can more easily find which 
people you've looked for and found in a particular database if you have 
a Master Source for each database.


It's much harder adding sources later but no reason not to start. Use 
tags to indicate that you have sourced everything you've entered for 
that person. The source icon lights up with just one source so isn't 
useful for letting you know that you still have work to do.


Have fun - I'm still cleaning up sources that I entered when I first 
started that fortunately still make some sense to me but wouldn't to 
anybody else.

LOL!  I am with you, Dennis.  I keep trying to use the source writer, and 
almost every time I end up going “huh??”  I then tend to put the information 
under events, and copy the source information that is given in what I find to 
that as well as the information, so that I can go back if necessary.  But the 
citation stuff eludes me – and I have a great deal of education so it should 
come naturally I would think!  Ha!  Looks easy when Geoff does it, but I am 
always confused before long!

Cathy, thank you for your guidance.  I did look at the help and that was
what I was trying to follow.  But, some days, my mind just doesn't
comprehend what my eyes are seeing.  I WILL go back and try this again.

I have watched just about every one of Geoff's webinars and there isn't one
just on using the Media Gallery and Picture Center.  Perhaps I will follow
up on contacting him.  But maybe most people don't have a problem
understand all the hints and tips of this tool like I do.  I'll think about
this.

Cathy, thank you for all your help to this Legacy UG.  I'm sure many people
like me do appreciate it.

If you click the Help link in the Media Gallery, look for the Displaying 
Pictures link and follow that and then look for the Sound section.
OR go to Help - Help Index and search for Sounds and choose the - 
Recording sub-heading and Display.

I do have Windows 10 and the video plays just fine on Movies & TV within
Windows 10.  Also do have Media Player too.  But thanks for the heads up as
some of my stuff doesn't play on Movies & TV.  But that isn't stuff
associated with the Legacy program or the linking.  So that is some other
issue to sort out later.

But for the life of me, I cannot get videos or sound to work.  I have music on 
my computer, but I cannot get it to work with the "Play Sound" for a slide 
show.  I also have a couple of movies and videos that I've made, but cannot get 
them to work either.  And along the same line,  I found a historical movie clip 
on YouTube which shows my father's occupation which is now an obsolete job. Do 
I add it to the media center it as a website; or can it be downloaded to the 
computer and then linked as a video?  I don't find a download button, but I 
have set up playlists and have it on that so that I can easily find it again.

I need the baby step version please for linking sound and video.  The Help 
section just doesn't help me at all.  Thanks so much.

Linda you might try Media Player if you are using windows 10.I was not
able with windows to get my CD,or pictures ,Videos. Until I did that
download. I think it works on other window program.

Just think of it this way,  We used to have all of our good videos on VHS
tape,  Or even farther back where I started 8MM film.
Can you now playback either of these formats now?

So I was just trying to say that If all of your media is JPG. for example
its will be far easier in the future to convert to whatever the "current"
media will be.

Bear with me please, basically, I am a hardcopy type of person - paper
doesn't need to be constantly updated.  And Legacy is a fantastic program
for managing my data.  But I don't depend on/trust my computer so I make
good use of Reports.  But they don't print videos!

​So I have this video which explains/shows my dad's occupation and I now
have it on my computer and linked in Legacy.  I have to do more to it
occasionally in the future to keep it view-able?

Are there other Legacy users confused with this or is it just me?

​OK.  I understand this which is why I am interested in downloading the
video to my 'puter.  My next question:  in the Media Center>Add Media there
is the option of Internet Website​.  If this is not a good idea, why is it
included?  Or is there some other advantage of using this option?

Just to add to this argument,  You will have  to keep modifying the saved
vids as the market is changing fast.  Much of the older files will no
longer play on the newer systems and given that this work is for future
generations it may be a problem,  Better to stick with basics and have the
capability to mass convert if required.

I’m glad you asked these questions because it puts this thread in full circle 
right back into relevancy with Legacy.

YTD seems to have gone through several iterations of itself…sometimes with 
malware inside and sometimes without…or maybe it’s just that a person’s own 
anti-virus software kept them clean. I generally try to complete any task on 
the computer without having to install another program or browser extension to 
accomplish the same thing. That avoids the potential for problems.

Downloading a video from youtube for use in Legacy is problematic because 
youtube wants it that way to create more traffic on their site which can view 
more ads. There are several ways to download youtube videos without having to 
install any software on your own system. One example is “savefrom.net” but they 
even recommend that you install their browser extension. You can still use 
their online download service without the extension. All you have to do is put 
URL of the video on their web page and after a second or two you’ll get their 
link to download the video in mp4 or other formats (just try it on any video in 
youtube and you'll kick yourself for installing software on your own computer). 
Otherwise just google “download youtube video” and you’ll get multiple links to

John, yes that helps a lot.  I did download the YTD program and I did get
one video downloaded and linked!!!  Now to do a couple more so that I know
what I was doing and that it wasn't an accident.  Then on to adding sounds

John, thanks for the great lead regarding the program.I have learned the lingo 
associated with pictures such as pixels, resolutions, and the various 
extensions.  But I'm really in the dark with the sound and video.  According to 
the Legacy Help, it mentions using MP3, but not MP4.  I know there is a 
difference but I'm clueless as to what it means in the first place much less 
the difference.  Is the Help just lagging on those extensions or does Legacy 
not play well with MP4 - yet?

Marianne,

Other programs can't import a SourceWriter source so they are in a 
Gedcom as "Basic" style.


As I understand it, where a SourceWriter template puts part of the 
source detail in amongst the Master Source data, then the source doesn't 
read as well but is understandable. I'm not sure how many templates do 
that but some do.


Note if you go from Legacy to Legacy via Gedcom, SourceWriter sources 
are all Basic Style in the new Legacy file.

1. Any source (Basic or SourceWriter) can be copied to the source 
clipboard from a person's source list and then pasted to any other 
person or another event for the same person.


Yes you can add as many New sources as you wish without immediately 
linking them to someone. The easiest way to do this is from the "Add a 
New Source" button on anyone's source list screen or via the Master 
source list itself (View > Master Lists > Source) using the add button 
there.


I do not think you can add New sources without linking via the source 
clipboard because it wants you to add a source detail (the specific 
details for one person).

1) Yes, you can put Basic Style Sources on the Clipboard
2) Yes, you can add sources to the Master Source List without actually using 
them yet HOWEVER be careful that you don't do OPTIONS > PURGE UNUSED or you 
will lose them all AND you want to be VERY careful with FILE > FILE MAINTENANCE 
> LIST CLEANUP because there is a check box there that will remove unused 
sources.

In the past, I was just using the Basic System. I have 15-20 sources entered 
using that system and have connected them to people in my Tree. Can "Basic 
System" sources be used on the clipboard ?

If I wanted to add a "bunch" of new sources  Can I just add them to the 
Master Source list and cite them to the correct people in my Tree later ?? 
. or do I have to immediately add them to a specific person in my Tree.

In other words, can I use the Source Writer to build my Master List and 
afterwards, go back and link these sources to the correct people and info  
and use the Clipboard to do this more quickly

ahead and reinstalled it as you suggested. The Help Index now appears (proving

One of the things that make email lists so frustrating is when people 
highjack threads. Start new emails for new topics, don't just change the

Your database probably has a locking file left behind from the crash. 
Simply

use Windows/File Explorer to locate the folder in which your database file
is stored. Look for a small 1K file with the same name but has a .LDB file
extension. Do NOT delete your main database file. Now try Legacy again.

just try a search of your computer looking for "*.LDB". Remember the
