navigati messages in mail

2013-01-24 Thread Michael Weaver
How do you get to the top of a list of emails in mail?
I have tried various Voiceover commands after looking at what they do in the
keyboard help but can't find the ones I need and end up just in the middle of
my list of emails.
There doesn't seem to be one that goes to the start of a table in mail unless I
am missing something obvious and it is something like using the table menu like
in Safari.

problem with mac mail

2012-12-31 Thread Michael Weaver
I don't seem to have this problem with my BT account as far as I know but with
my Google accout, it seems like I get the same messages downloaded sso I think
I am still having a large number of messages in my Google account.
It is like my email is adding to the account all the time so I have older
emails going back months. Normally selecting all and delete gets rid of lots of
email but it doesn't appear to work in my google account when I relaunch mail,
the older messages are back so it is like I have no control of how many
messages I have like select all, delete is not keeping them down.
I thought I had fixed this when I checked the delete from server box in the
mail preferences.

deleting emails

2012-12-30 Thread michael weaver

i have emails from mailing lists in my google account.
how do i delete emails that i am not interested in or have read?
i ask because every time i go into mail, i look at my google
account and i have the same several hundred emails i thought i
had deleted.
i have tried to find a button or option to refresh the list or
whatever but can't find it.
i had this problem with several hundred messages before which was
why i removed my google account last time because the list
appeared to be getting too large to handle.

removing files in the terminal

2012-12-19 Thread michael weaver
how do you remove files and directories in the terminal on the
mac?
i am going to see if i can remove the musicmanager preference
file using the terminal as no other way i have found that will
remove the thing from the system preferences and the apps i have
found you have to purchase which may not be worth it for just
trying to get rid of one app that is being stubbon to remove and
keeps starting up on login and musicmanager is not accessible
with voiceover.

musicmanager

2012-12-19 Thread michael weaver
i can locate what i want to remove in the terminal but i keep
being told it is a directory and it just won't remove. i tried
rm ininddinin and rf ininddinin in the directory itself.
deleting the annoying musicmanager pane in system preferences
might be easier to do in mac osx rather than the terminal only i
cannot locate the right file for some reason.
i am getting frustrated enough to even consider doing a fresh
installation of osx.

2012-12-19 Thread michael weaver

thanks for the advice.
i may have fixed my problem fingers crossed.
i should have known about putting sudo before the rest of the
command. i should have known this from my use of linux a while
ago because ubuntu uses sudo.

A couple of things first about terminal since I don't
know how much you are used to using it:

It is very accessible with voiceover but not as good as
it could be so be aware that you may have to use VO-a from time
to time to get a good read of what was printed. Voiceover
doesn't work well with bursty output and will appear to loose
some of what you needed to here. It is not lost, but you will
need to use VO-a to read the scroll-back buffer and then
Command-k to reset it for the next runs.

When you have found the files you want to remove,
individual files can be removed with the rm command as in

rm thisfile.

You can remove a whole directory full of files by using
the -r flag to rm as in rm -r thisdir.

If you goof up and destroy half your system, let's hope
you had good backups because that is the only way to get them
back so be extra careful. There is no undelete function. Once

it

is gone, it's gone.

You may find out that you can not delete the files you
are stalking. That is because they install as owned by root.

You

can become root on your own system from the terminal by using
the sudo command. What this does is let you become the superuser
while you run this command and then revert back to your
mild-mannered self without the superpowers.

Let's say you find the files and directories you want to
delete but they are owned by root. type something like

sudo rm -r thosefiles

You will probably get a prompt to enter a password and that is
your own login password. This sets a timer for maybe 5 minutes
or so when you can enter other sudo commands without the
password. Each new command starts the timer anew so you only
have to enter your password the first time. four or five minutes
after the last sudo command, the timer times out and you must
enter the password again.

Anyway, that is how you remove files and directories in
terminal.

Good luck and go slowly and methodically. It is not
difficult but it is easy to delete more than you want and as I
said, there is no undelete function, only recovery from backups.

kindle app for the mac and voiceover

does kindle for the mac work with voiceover?
i ask because i have a paperback book and i am having problems
scanning it with my scanner which is an old photocopy type
device, the scan r.
the book i was trying to read with my scanner is called the
master by guy n smith which is a horror story.
i have seen it on amazon as a kindle book and from what i have
seen on the amazon page, text to speech appears to be enabled in
the book so i am wondering if kindle for the mac is accessible
for me to be able to read this book in kindle form?

i know that ad has been transmitted with some of those eppisodes
such as the devil's foot.

Subject: Get iPlayer Automator not downloading described shows

Hi all,
For those that use Get iPlayer Automator to download BBC shows
and have the audio described option checked to get that version,
how do you get the audio description? I downloaded the latest
episode of The Vampire Diaries, which I know is audio described
on iTV.

Thanks.

playing bbc programmes on the mac

2012-11-29 Thread michael weaver

is there a way to play bbc programmes etc on the mac?
there is a tv drama on at the moment, based on a horror novel i
have both heard and read the book of only i cannot seem to be
able to watch it on the mac.
i can view it on my phone which isn't an i-phone, only i have not
been able to get the audio description and the buttons for bbc
i-player on the phone are unlabelled so it was more good luck
than good management that i was able to play the secret of
crickley hall using both i-player and the bbc media player for
my phone.
i tried to locate the bbc i-player desktop for the mac but
couldn't find it or an accessible app which might enable to play
the film and i seemed to get no sound at all when clicking on the
video player on the bbc site when i went to the i-player link.

hope someone on this list can answer this question.

get itplayer automator

2012-11-29 Thread michael weaver

i have managed to find my copy of get itplayer automator.
how do i choose the audio description option for a tv program if
available?
i went into preferences only i couldn't find the option unless
the audio description setting only shows up when you add the
programmes to the queue or download the eppisodes.
it shows both one and two of the secret of crickley hall which
is a start.
my guess is that audio description option isn't available until
you download.

i had a problem with using the get itplayer.
i didn't realise that some of the options were hidden in a

download of my programme for a start.
i also found the audio description as a checkbox under the
preferences when i accessed the toolbar.

see finance

2012-09-04 Thread michael weaver
i have just been having a look at see finance which i downloaded
yesterday as i have had access issues with i-bank when trying to
download financial information from my bank.
see finance seems faily accessible but for some reason when i try
to import my data from my bank, the statement that gets importted
seems to be different from the total amount when i look at my
braille statement.
what am i doing wrong when i downloaded a qif file from my bank
site and import it into see finance?
the transaction details for each transaction appear correct
looking through the information on both the braille statement and
imported statement, only the closing balances seem incorrect for
some reason.

i just tried to download entries using my bank's website in

i didn't try just the standard transaction entry. some dialogue
pops up after the file has been imported, i think it allows you
to go through the entries and the categories they are under but
the process seemed inaccessible.

Hi I also have been using sea finance and really like it too. I
have that problem when reconciling from the direct bank. I found
out that unless the name and everything else is correct it will
add a entry to the register.

How did or were you able to input entries into the register using
I bank? I tried to use it with voice over and it did not read
anything. As a matter of fact my son had to help.

OK, if I understand this correctly, Sarah is advocating the use
of a dual-layer DVD. Guess what folks, I suggested that from day
one. :)

Although actually, it may be that even that doesn't work. I
tried it and got errors. I think the image has to be the right
size, although I could be wrong on that score. All the same,
just buy yourself a thumb drive, you'll find things a whole lot
easier.

Josh

Are you talking about a USB thumb drive or a SD card? I would
presume the former. If you use the recovery tool, you'll have no
trouble. I think this one is just one instance where people
sometimes make it more difficult for themselves, purely
unintentionally, of course. :)

But yes, by thumb drive we mean a USB thumb drive, not a hard

drive.

Re: Viruses?

2012-06-25 Thread michael weaver

i would agree with sarah about using sophos.
i have just started using it so i can't say anything about the
quarantene option as i have not had to use that option yet.
rnib's access it had an article about antivirus apps i think
and the author said something about using antivirus with systems
running mac and linux.
i certainly now use the antivirus app on my mac after my past
experiences with windows.

My view points have slightly changed. I used to say no not at
all, but when flash back hit this year and some others I said
maybe. I'm still on maybe. I would use sophos anti virus. It's
free and the only thing that's hard to use is the quarantine
option with voice over but it is quite good.

Take care.

bluetooth problem on the i-phone 4

2012-06-20 Thread michael weaver

i seem to be having a problem with bluetooth on the i-phone 4.
this doesn't happen always but when i have my bluetooth headset
connected to my i-phone 4, i sometimes find it has disconnected
after dialing calls on the phone.
what happens is that i hear a bleep or two bleeps after i dial a
number and find that my call is transfered to the handsfree
speaker which means i don't hear the call unless i pick up my
phone and put it to my ear like the headset has disconnected.
i have the plantronix pro plus headset and it is supposed to pair
without needing a bluetooth code and also it is supposed to be
detected when the headset is worn, assuming the power is on as
there are only three buttons, the two volume controls and the
button that powers on the headset.
the only thing i can think of doing is to go into bluetooth
settings, forget the pairing or whatever the option is to unpair
the headset and go through the pairing proceedure again or turn
off wifi while i am not using it in the hope that i don't get
this switching problem.
the problem i am having with the headset is a bit like the
problem with the switching of the phone between hands free
speaker and ear piece of the phone.
does anyone else have this same problem with bluetooth headsets
and if so have they resolved it?

repeat download of audio book

2012-06-10 Thread michael weaver
i tried the book where i believe there is a problem and i still
get that horrible noise, even without wearing a headset while
listening to that particular story.

how do i download the book again without being charged?
i purchased it using the i-phone itself.
what i am worried about is deleting it from the i-phone, having
to search for the book again to download it and find that i am
charged again for the same purchase.

Re: repeat download of audio book

2012-06-10 Thread michael weaver
i tried to download my book again and i think i found i had to
purchase it again as it didn't seem to appear in my purchase
list.

unfortunately i am now wondering if the book has a fault.
the noise that i get can only be described as being like
sometimes when i approach my talking microwave and i have my
i-phone on me, it is that kind of low buzzing only this buzzing
is very loud and seems to drown out the dialogue.
i looked at the reviews for spine chillers volume three. there
were two customer reviews on the i-tunes site and none of them
seemed to mention this particular low buzzing noise like when you
get a phone and another electrical device in contact with each
other.
i checked this out by hitting on the icon which stated two
customer reviews or 4 stars, the button or icon you get under the
price of the book.

problem with downloads folder

2012-06-06 Thread michael weaver
i tried to download some podcasts last night but got error
messages saying that the podcast couldn't be downloaded.

now i have two downloads that i can't seem to get rid of.
how do i clear unsuccessful downloads from the i-phone 4?
i can't seem to find an edit button that will allow me to access
a delete button for these files i wish to remove.
i think i may have had this kind of problem with podcasts before
and i ended up having to totally reset my i-phone.
i have looked in all places for a suitable option including in
the settings and storage menu but no joy.

a problem with an i-tunes download

2012-06-05 Thread michael weaver
i often listen to audio books on my i-phone and none of my other
files do this but on one audio book which is a collection of
short horror stories, i get a very loud buzzing sound coming
through the headset.
has anyone else had this problem? is it a headset prroblem or a
problem with the mediia ie cd where the audio file has been
converted from?
this happens in a story collection called spine chillers volume
three in the first story called casting the runes.
the sound i get is a buzzing sound like my i-phone is in the
vacinity of other electrical equipment yet i am not near anything
when i hear this particular noise like i could be in bed
listening to the book through the headset.
the only thing i can think of is that this particular story was
taken from a cd with a fault.

vanishing emails

2012-05-20 Thread michael weaver
since i have last updated lion, i seem to notice fewer mailboxes
in mail.
i thought this update had fixed the problem with email vanishing
from my inbox but it hasn't and i have not yet been able to work
out where it has gone because all i see under the mailbox menus
when i go to favourite mailboxes for example is inbox, sent and
drafts.
messages keep vanishing even when i just highlight ones i wish to
delete when i do shift down arrow when selecting certain ones.
the only things i can think of that might be causing this problem
is how bt sets up mail accounts when going through the account
settup menu or something to do with the mail filter feature.
i have even checked the preference settings for how mail is
treated on my server only no clue there either. the only other
thing i can think of is that spam guard that is on by default is
clashing with junk mail filter settings and that i may have to
turn one off.
i have tried removing my account and re entering the details and
trying to select pop 3 instead of imap which mail seems to want
to use by default only it won't allow me to choose pop 3 because
it insists on automatically creating my account.
i notice that my mail is not affected on my i-phone and that
seems to be using imap.

syncing files

2012-05-08 Thread michael weaver

i seem to be having problems transfering files to my i-phone 4.
i have a lot of audio books etc and i think my library is too big
because i am getting an eror about not being able to sync the
items or whatever.
when i delete files from the books under sources, do i have to
say yes to keep them in trash?
i deleted some books from my i-phone only for some reason they
have appeared back on the phone again and i think this is causing
me problems when i try to replace books after trying to free
space.

an i-phone problem

2012-05-07 Thread michael weaver
i seem to be having a problem with my i-phone 4 which is running
the latest ios and it is a bit worse than when first unlocking
the screen and getting two apps like phone and messages read

for some reason the home button now seems to require two presses
when in applications to get the phone back to the home screen.
i certainly see this problem in mail where after i have read
messages i press home and i am still in the mail app and i press
home again before it takes me out of it.

burning audio books

2012-05-07 Thread michael weaver

i have quite a few things like books in my i-tunes library.
is there a way of burning audio books to cd when they have been
downloaded in i-tunes either on the mac or after they have been
downloaded and transffered to the mac from the i-phone?
i have noticed some books i am thinking of purchasing but they
are quite long so i need to free up space in my i-tunes library
on my mac and free up space for them on the i-phone.
i would like to be able to burn the books so i can play them on a

a problem with pages

2012-05-05 Thread michael weaver

i seem to be having a problem with pages.
what happens when i load a text document is that i sometimes end
up in some sort of problem where i can navigate a document kind
of but cannot edit it for some strange reason.
it is like it goes into some kind of review only mode and i have
tried doing navigation off but still the same problem like it
isn't scrooling properly and allowing me to edit my document.
i have tried stopping interacting and re enteracting and
voiceover reads page elements or format options whatever or
scroll window but still this annoying problem of knowing my text
is there only i cannot edit it, only move around it with either
the voiceover cursor or sometimes the cursor keys just beep and
it is like i get limited movement through the text but cannot
delete and make any changes to existing text like it is stuck.

control on headset

2012-04-01 Thread michael weaver
i have noticed that in the later versions of ios, for some reason
i can't get my headset to control my music ie the volume control
and changing tracks doesn't appear to work using the control on
the wire on the i-phone 4.
i have been through the settings but can't appear to find one
that is affecting such control.

Re: control on headset

2012-04-01 Thread michael weaver
as far as i know, the headset isn't broken unless it is something
i am not aware of as sound comes through the ear pieces when i am
listening to music, it is just something like changing tracks and
volume and maybe perhaps answering calls.
i do happen to have a spare one which i bought when i lost the
old one and found it again so i will try that and see if it makes
a difference.
perhaps it might have bust when it got pulled while i was
listening to audio books in bed when the phone was plugged into
the wall and the phone got pulled off my little cupboard which my
landline also stands on because of the shortness of the usb cable
because sometimes it tends to get pulled and the phone sometimes
ends up on the carpet because it gets pulled from the edge.

music track in a recorded message

2012-04-01 Thread michael weaver

is there a way of adding a song track into a voice message?
i am thinking of recording a message for my girlfriend which i
can do but for some reason if i were to play a music track in the
recording the volume alters when i play the thing through the
headphones.
what i do at the moment is use quicktime on the mac to record my
message but it is when i play my selected track in i-tunes which
is when i have the problem of the track being faint.
i presume you don't need to have a physical mixing desk to be
able to do this.

Re: keyboard chatting in skype

2012-03-31 Thread michael weaver

i think chat is working.
however it seems a bit slow because there seems to be a lot of
information between the edit field and where the messages appear
in the html pane ie i get a lot of history stuff and call ended
etc.
how do i just focus on the main chat because at first i thought
it hadn't been accepted?
what i seem to be finding is that i am having to do a lot of
navigating to the left with the vo keys to focus on that html
window with all the things in between that and the edit box where
i type my own messages?
have i got something set wrong or do i need to create some kind
of script or whatever because the information is likely to come
in fast from whoever i am chatting with.

When you view yoru contacts in list mode and you hit enter you
will see an edit and an html area. that's how you will know you
are in the chat. You thpe int he edit field and hit enter then
look in the html area to see if they respond.

notification settings on the i-phone

2012-03-29 Thread michael weaver
i have a question about these notification settings on the
i-phone.

what are the best settings for some of these notifications?
i have examined and changed some of the notification settings.
should i set important ones such as messaging, twitter and skype
to alerts when i enter the notification settings for the app or
should i just leave them as defaults?
what about these badgers and banner things mentioned in these
settings?
i notice that some of these settings in some of these apps were
set to something like showing banners so i am not sure if
changing them to notifications by swiping a finger up will make a
difference to how they behave.
should i have just left things as default in these notification
settings?

this is an area i have not examined as much.

skype on the i-phone and contacts

2012-03-29 Thread michael weaver
is there a way to be notified when contacts are available on
skype on the i-phone?
the only ways i have found so far are either just to go to the
online contacts tab which doesn't appear when you first open the
app or go into the contact name and see if that person is on-line
or whatever which is a bit of a fath if there presence changes
regularly or quickly.

personal videos and youtube

2012-03-27 Thread michael weaver
i may have got a possible girlfriend and i am wondering if i
could create a video on youtube for her as she lives east of
moscow and verbal communication appears to be possibly remote so
the only contact with her has been via email from an internet
cafe when she is working.
is there a way of posting personal videos on youtube which i
could maybe direct her to so at least she would have an idea as
to what i am like?
it may be the only way until i can establish some kind of phone
contact with her when and if she can afford it.
i presume that youtube videos can be produced on the mac from
features i have seen in quicktime and i think my mate kristian
who i new from tapton mount school has done it.
as someone who has done internet radio and the like he would have
more idea about how to go about it than me.

a question about twitter

2012-03-27 Thread michael weaver
when sending a tweet to someone or when following someone on
twitter or even a group, am i supposed to put hash tags at the
beginning and end of names of individuals and groups i am
following?
at the moment i am trying to get going with twitter on the
i-phone and i have requested to follow groups and an individual
but i am not getting any messages on my phone.
if i were to say to go into a profile called john smith, if i
tweet him do i still have to put the hash tags before the name
before it actually sends?
i tried to tweet my befrender or volunteer because i found his
profile on twitter only i don't believe my tweet sent because he
didn't see it when i asked him this evening if he had got it so i
presume something went wrong and doctor who news which is a
twitter group hasn't sent any information which i thought it
would have done with doctor who being a popular subject area so
there should be a lot of news around for it.
i can't even seem to see the status of my followed individuals
and groups to see if they have been accepted for sending and
receiving tweets which might be the problem on the standard
twitter app for the i-phone.

get off now or replacement app

2012-03-22 Thread michael weaver
at the moment i am currently running get off now on my i-phone 4

travelling back from town today.
however the second issue was that today after re enabling the
destination and making a call to tell my dad i was on the way
home to my house, the alarm didn't trigger on my stop and i again
found that it decided to trigger just as i was about almost at my
front door so there is certainly something wrong there because
the bus stop to my local pub certainly hasn't moved near or into
my house.
has anyone else had these issues with get off now for the i-phone
and have they been able to resolve them or found a different app
that works better as regards locating stops?
fortunately today the driver told me i was at my stop which i
wouldn't have believed because of the alarm not being triggered.
for some reason it worked fine on wednesday and also one of my
neighbours was on the bus coming back so her ringing the bell and
the beep of the alarm for the stop triggered almost about the
same time or there was not much in it.

the new ios

2012-03-07 Thread michael weaver

i have just upgraded my i-phone to the latest ios version.
when i unlock my phone it says phone, messages when i am sure
that in the earlier releases it just says messages when the
phone is unlocked.
am i supposed to have the phone read two items when i unlock the
phone?
i thought it might have had something to do with a memory problem
after upgrading to the new ios. i cleared the app switcher and
restarted my phone but i still get this issue.
also i noticed that when i upgraded the ios, it beeped and said
rebooting and just hung so i had to connect my phone to the mac
before it got past the rebooting point as tripple tapping the
home key and touching the screen, the i-phone didn't responde
which is why i had to unplug the phone from the wall and connect
it to my macbook.

one email problem resolved

2012-03-05 Thread michael weaver
i have managed to fix my problem with my name appearing in cc
field of emails i sent.
i went into preferences and found a checkbox next to a popup
button where the sender name can either be put in the cc or bcc
fields so i unchecked this and did a test message and it no
longther writes me a copy of my own messages.
i must have accidentally set it to add my name while trying to
resolve my problem of multiple mailboxes.

something wrong in mac mail

2012-02-28 Thread michael weaver
i think i might know why my email keeps being moved in mail on my
macbook only i can't seem to be able to resolve the problem.
if i delete my account in mail and do a setup from scratch i end
up with 12 mailboxes, one of them is a bulk mail folder which bt
uses by default and i also seem to get 2 trash folders and there
may be other repeated folders which i think might be confusing
mail.
if i try to delete some of the duplicate folders i get an imap
error message and i am told that any of the repeated folders i
try to remove can't be done so something is obviously going
wrong.
i have even tried to change the account type while running the
mail setup and i have found no way to do this as i am wondering
if the getting of my bt settings is causing the problem.
i even tried deleting my i-cloud settings and re running mail
setup but still the same 12 mailboxes with duplicate names.

deleting contacts

2012-02-26 Thread michael weaver

how do you delete contacts in mac mail?
i think i have done this a while back but can't remember how to
do it.
i go into the contacts panel via the windows menu on my macbook,
choose the contact, go into edit, delete, press enter and nothing
happens at all.
i tried opening the context menu but that option doesn't seem to
be available.
i looked in the mail help and it said something about pressing
the remove contact button only i don't appear to see that option
when in the contacts list as it only seems to show the things for
creating an email when i tab through the options next to the
contact i want to delete.

cluttered screen in skype

2012-02-05 Thread michael weaver

i am running version 5 of skype on my macbook.
however i appear to get a cluttered screen when i launch it like
all the important stuff seems to be hidden like it is bringing up
html pages on launch so it is like i keep having to stop
interacting, try and locate the table and interact with that and
try and access my contacts by doing something like down arrow to
locate the nearest contact because voiceover doesn't seem to want
to focus.
i notice in previous versions of skype that the cursor would get
stuck in html content after i had been on a call so i would
sometimes have to exit skype altogether in order to get back to
my contacts because shortcut keys wouldn't take me back to the
right screen but it looks like the latest version seems to be a
bit more problematic in this area unless i am doing something
wrong when it comes to focusing on an important part of the
screen in skype with voiceoverddy

an i-bank dialogue

2012-01-29 Thread michael weaver

i am trying to set up my bank accounts using i-bank.
if i download the transactions for an account when i enter my
banks website and use the export link or button to download the
statement in the recognised format, i think it may be qif, what
is the dialogue i get before my entries are processed when it
goes back to the i-bank screen?
it appears to be an unlabelled dialogue and i hit enter on this
twice before it processes the data and tries to put it into my
account which is where things seem to go wrong because i only end
up seeing dates and not any other transaction information so i am
wondering if there is a step i am pressing enter on too early
when i am told my transactions have been successfuly imported.
i am wondering if i need to readjust things slightly when this
dialogue which appears to be unspoken comes up ie try and look at
the transactions to be imported into my named account before i
press enter and it starts prrocessing.
a processing status appears on the next screen after this
dialogue but it doesn't appear to change.
has anyone had any success with importing transactions in i-bank
from their banking website?
the only thing i can think of doing is to have someone sighted
present and create an account from scratch, importing my
statement and try and get an explanation on this dialogue box
after i get a message saying that my imported statement is
successful and the dialogue appears.

a strange thing with skype

2012-01-29 Thread michael weaver
i think there is a strange thing with the latest version of skype
and i am wondering if this might be my problem when trying to get
notification when someone in my contacts list comes on line
without me having to do voiceover keys plus left or right cursor
to find out if someone is on-line, offline etc.
what i have noticed is that there is a notification menu under

also an option which is dimmed called notification settings which
i seem to be unable to change and i am wondering if this is where
my problem is as i have not been able to set anything under call
where it says notification settings with the button being
dimmed or grade out.

the i-phone 4 s and phone calls

2012-01-01 Thread michael weaver

i am thinking of purchasing the i-phone 4 s sometime this year.
i think if i don't want to be penalised for upgrading, the
earliest i can upgrade is august this year i think.

is the 4 s better at dealing with calls while running voiceover?
i don't know if this only happens with voiceover users or if it
at all affects non voiceover users as well but the 4 is known for
switching between earpiece and hands free speaker.
apart from of course wearing a headset the only way of avoiding
the problem on the 4 is to temporarily switch off voiceover by
pressing the home button twice and then having to remember to do
the same at the end of a call which is a bit of a nusance.

has this problem been addressed on the 4 s?
i tried to just disable wifi before calls only that didn't appear
to work as a solution to the problem of me either speaking to
someone or someone talking to me and parts of the call breaking
up because of this switching between the earpiece and speaker
when the phone isn't near your ear.
as far as i am aware this doesn't happen to a non voiceover user
from my experience of temporarily turning it off and someone who
borrowed my phone to speak to their mother about an important
avon order for work that they were in a hurry to put through
because they didn't have access to the internet at the time.

burning photos on the mac

2011-12-31 Thread michael weaver
can i burn a folder of photos on the mac to a cd just from the
menu or do i need extra software?
i have some photos from a possible girlfriend and i want to burn
them to cd or dvd.
i have them in a sub folder under my pictures folder under her
name so they don't get mixed up with other photos i happen to
have from ones that were taken in tunisia last year when i went
with the traveleyes group.

movies on the i-phone

2011-12-26 Thread michael weaver
does anyone know where movies that have been purchased are
located on the i-phone or how to get to them?
i have just downloaded a movie and it doesn't appear to be
showing up in the options i have tried in both i-tunes and music?

i am using the latest ios 5 on the i-phone 4 if that helps.
my downloads directory is empty so i assume it has fully
downloaded, purchases seems to be the wrong category and other
categories just show up films that are on the i-tunes store that
are available so i am certainly having a problem trying to locate
my purchase unless i just double tap the home key and then type
in the name of the movie i have downloaded in the hope i will
find it in the browser.

the dictionary on the i-phone

2011-12-19 Thread michael weaver
is there a way of getting the options and words in the dictionary
on the i-phone when a word is queried when texting?
i have tried the rota and swiping and i cannot seem to be able to
access words or the options and you cannot seem to be able to
press space or enter on a word you wish to accept because if it
queries with the wrong word and you try to change it, it just
puts the wrong word back again.
none of the options in the rota seem to give me access when i am
texting and a word is queried.
deleting a character at the end of the word sometimes brings up
the right choice first time but hitting enter or space changes it
back to the word that it first comes up with rather than the one
you want.
i know one person told me she switches off the dictionary because
she uses the same bluetooth keyboard as me which is the bt
freedom but i don't always wish to carry a bluetooth keyboard
around with me as it is still pretty bulky when foldered down and
normally needs a larger pocket for carrying it in.

a problem with audacity

2011-12-15 Thread michael weaver

i have just installed audacity on my macbook.
however although it worked the first time when i was exploring
the app, for some reason an unknown dialogue keeps popping up
and i am sure this is preventing me from making a recording
because i have tried lower and capital r, command r and control r
but when i do a space to stop and do the go go to start option
and hit play i get nothing at all so i am wondering if i
accidentally chose something under preferences which is causing
me to get this unknown dialogue and preventing me from doing
anything with the app.

an i-phone 4 problem

2011-12-11 Thread michael weaver
until i can conveniently upgrade to the 4 s, i am having a
problem with my i-phone 4.
when i go into emails, if i have a few messages in a thread for
example my i-phone seems to be very sluggish while scrolling
through emails.
i cannot understand why my i-phone 4 has become so slow when
doing certain things like reading emails and texts.
the only thing i can think of is that it is to do with the latest
version of ios and my i-phone 4.
if i try to move faster it also is known to jump while struggling
to scroll through items.

how do i resolve this problem?

Re: an i-phone 4 problem

2011-12-11 Thread michael weaver

thanks for the suggestion.
i didn't know how many apps i had in the app switcher as i
thought they had to be running apps to affect the responsiveness
of the i-phone.
i seemed to have loads listed at least so i double tapped them
all as you suggested and restarted the phone and the
responsiveness has certainly improved.

Michael,
Maybe you have too many programs running.
Restarting the phone does not close them, they will all open

again on

restart.
Double-tap the home key and bring up the app switcher.
Tap and hold one of the apps until it says editing apps.
Then double-tap each app until the app switcher says no more

apps.
Then close the app switcher, and restart your phone, and let us

know if that

helps.

an i-phone or i-tunes problem

2011-11-15 Thread michael weaver
i seem to be having a problem with my i-phone 4 using ios 5 and
i-tunes.
i have deleted a lot of stuff off my phone but i keep getting the
error about not being able to sync a certain amount of items
every time i connect my i-phone to my macbook.
i thought that after deleting my items and that after so much
time say a day or so i would be able to connect my i-phone to my
mac and not keep getting this eror but it still pops up.

does anyone know how to get rid of it?
as far as i am aware there doesn't appear to be a problem syncing
things as i have just downloaded some music i have in my
purchased music menu or whatever.

deleting music and photos from the i-phone

i can remove apps from my i-phone but for some reason i cannot
remove music and photos?
i selected my music library in i-tunes, selected all the songs,
pressed delete and when i exited i-tunes all the music i wanted
rid of was still under music on the i-phone.
i tried going into my i-phone as a separate drive to try and
erase things that way including some photos and i cannot locate
my i-phone as a drive outside of i-tunes.
how do i get rid of things other than applications on the i-phone
4 either with or without the use of i-tunes on my macbook pro?

i am running mac osx lion.
even doing a double tap and hold on say an album in the music app
doesn't appear to work.

loss of feedback on i-phone 4

2011-11-04 Thread michael weaver

can anyone help me on this one.
i showed someone my i-phone yesterday as they offered to keep in
contact with me.
however voiceover said muting when she turned it in a certain way
so i thought that my whole speech had stopped.
voiceover is still working but i don't get any feedback anymore
when entering text etc so although i hear voiceover, i don't get
the clicks or tones when entering text or even error messages.
i tried putting the setting back with a reset after going through
my settings, keyboard, accessibility, etc and finding nothing and
i also looked under general and although my reset asked me if i
just wanted to restore my settings, my i-phone decided to again
go through the setup process and i am still not getting sounds
after doing a backup from i-cloud.
where do i need to look under in order to restore keyboard
settings?
it is a pain when typing and me being left wondering if things
are being entered correctly and i have lost the clicks when
entering passwords for example?
i looked at something called keyboard clicks and that was on so
it is a bit strange i have not been able to put things back as
they were.

what a fool

2011-11-04 Thread michael weaver

sorry for my previous posting.
i feel a bit of a fool.
just after checking all my settings i thought i would check my
mute switch on the side of my phone and it was in the wrong
position so that is why i wasn't getting any audible feedback
while navigating my i-phone.
i have ended up wasting my time restoring my settings and the
problem could have been resolved in a few seconds.
no wonder i heard it say muting when my new friend was trying to
get me to store their number.
she must have flicked the mute switch before handing it back to
me.

had received which disappeared from my inbox after a few days and
i still couldn't find my lost email so i am left wondering if i
should use a different email app for the mac?

Re: email applications and voiceover

2011-11-03 Thread michael weaver

thanks for your email.
i might have fixed the problem in mail but not sure until i get
new email.
i went into the mail preferences and got some message about
invalid certificate and something about verifying servers and i
think i may have had this problem before when i first used my
macbook with leopard and mail.
i checked the box for show certificate and there was some
checkbox in the dialogue which i remembered checking last time to
accept my mail server as a valid server.
when i configured mail after doing a fresh install of mac osx
with lion, my settings were downloaded from bt as imap when mail
got the network settings.
it seemed to insist on imap going through the automatic setup
than pop.

Hi Michael,

There is Mozilla's Thunderbird, but I don't know if it is
accessible. Also, i do not think it has been updated in some
time. If you want to try it though, you can get it from here:

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

I've also been thinking about your lost E-Mail, and m wondering
if you're using POP (Post Office Protocol), to receive your
messages. POP downloads your mail locally to your computer. So,
when it is downloaded, it is no longer available on the server.
Also, some mail services require you to set certain functions
from the server side. Can you set the ability to see Sent
messages from there?

TC :)

disappearing email

2011-11-02 Thread michael weaver
email keeps disappearing from my inbox since i have upgraded to
lion.
i tend to keep email for a while in my inbox just in case i need
to refer to it for example.
however i don't know why messages i keep for a few days which
have been read end up disappearing without me even pressing
delete.
is this a lion issue in mac mail or is something else causing it
such as the fact when i did a fresh install for lion when it was
released, the mail setup chose imap by default instead of pop
when mac mail decided to get my mail settings for the setup.

applications in growl

2011-11-01 Thread michael weaver
i downgraded growl to a less current version but all i can see in
the apps under settings is the growl app itself.
no other app appears to show up and i can't find a single way of
adding apps such as skype.

Hello Michael:

To add Skype, you need to go to system preferences and you should

be able

to see Growel in there.
