Hi Jeff. I'm running Fusion 5 and am using NVDA or System Access on Windows XP
Pro and I sounds are functioning normally. I haven't updated to the latest
version because, umm, I downloaded a cracked version of it and I'm afraid that
if I updated, the crack won't work. I know that some people would question this
tactic but oh well.

Re: an attempt to make peace with the ITunes Library system and a question

2013-04-03 Thread Dave
The best solution here is to create a playlist for your iPhone, and have
iTunes sync selected playlists, rather than the entire library.

This is actually what you want to do, just using different terms.

You need not create a new iTunes library, just add songs and artists to a
playlist, then sync only that playlist when you connect your phone to your
computer.

  Hello Angelo,

I'll let someone else address your question in more detail, but the basic
answer is that you won't be able to write to NTFS partitions without additional
software assistance. I've read some posts on the macvisionaries list, and
somewhat more recently on the mac-access list, that people have successfully
used Paragon software to write to NTFS volumes that they need to access from
both Windows and the Mac. This isn't something that I do myself, so I'll just
mention that there is currently a sale on a Paragon Mini-Bundle at the
MacUpdate Promo site (mupromo.com):

  • Paragon Mini-Bundle! 10.0.1 (four apps for $29.95 that normally run for
$100)
  https://deals.macupdate.com/deal/14044/paragon-mini-bundle

The sale seems to be running through the next 5 days. The way the mupromo
site works, you need to register and create a login account. That requires a
one-time negotiation of a CAPTCHA. Afterwards, you can log into your account
for a record of your past purchases, information on the serial numbers, and
links to the download versions. There's usually a download trial so you can try
things out and decide whether you want to purchase the app deal.

Maybe somebody who has used the Paragon software can comment on this.

  HTH. Cheers,

  Esther

Re: Question about pushing calendar events to my Mac

That's very strange. It might be a matter of making sure there is
consistency with the calendar names used by both devices. I know I had a lot

Re: Question about moving to the top and bottom of the message list in Mail

2013-04-03 Thread Mike Arrigo
I made a custom gesture to do this. In the voiceover settings, go to
the track pad commander. When you make a custom gesture, you hold the
option key to use them. I set it so that option swipe up performs the
go to top command, and option swipe down performs the go to end
command. If you are interacting with the messages table, this will move
you to the top or bottom. These gestures are also handy for other
things such as going to the beginning or end of web pages.

Re: an attempt to make peace with the ITunes Library system and a question

2013-04-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

As I mentioned in my first reply to this post, I, too believe that creating a
playlist or playlists to sync with the iPhone is the best solution. Ray is
uncomfortable with the methods by which iTunes handles his media and moving
from no iTunes to incorporating iTunes Match seems like too big of a step to
me. Unless you subscribe to iTunes Match, only items purchased through the
iTunes Store will appear as iCloud items and iTunes Match is only for music,
not other media. When only syncing specific Playlists to the iPhone, these
playlists can be easily modified on your Mac then either synced while connected
or wirelessly depending on your settings.

Just as an aside to Ray, you may wish to consider looking at iTunes in a
different light. Your dislike of the manner by which iTunes organizes your
music is, in my opinion, a background kind of thing. Consider that how iTunes
does its organizing does not have to affect how you arrange things within the
top layer or User layer of iTunes. You are totally able to create folders,
playlists and such within iTunes essentially organizing your Library how you
want. What is done underneath is immaterial to how you interact with the media
content within iTunes itself. There are also alternate views whereby the music
can be viewed by album, artist or just a massive list of your entire
collection. Again, this is just my opinion of course, so take it as you wish.

Later...

This is actually what you want to do, just using different terms.

You need not create a new iTunes library, just add songs and artists to a
playlist, then sync only that playlist when you connect your phone to your
 computer.

Re: Bartender

Hello Jeff,

Bartender is partially compatible with the Macintosh.
While I can access the features from within the program itself, and
decide on whether to hide or make icons visible within my menubar, I
do not know how to rearrange icons using voiceover.
From the web site, you will see that a full month trial is given, at
the end thereof you can decide on whether or not to purchase the app.

Hope this has been helpful.

Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Shannon Gerdts

Hello list,
I'm a new subscriber as of today and would like to ask this direct
question without getting a lot of elitest Mac/Windows mentalities. What I
mean by this is I would love to get some feedback from you guys on the list
about an unbiased bit of feedback on your experiences with the Mac. I also
would like to know what you guys have experienced as being pros to the
switch from a windows machine to that of a Mac system as well as cons if
there is any. Have any of you used boot camp or another way of running
windows successfully on a Mac?
The reason I want to get this information is because my wife just
recently had her Toshiba laptop give out on her after just three to four
years and is rather disappointed with her experiences in windows laptops so
she is tossing around the idea of a Mac. However, before making the
decision to just jump into the decision she would like to get as much
information as possible and weigh the advantages and disadvantages first so
that she makes the best decision for her in the long run without being stuck
shelling out money on a system she won't like. I ask about running Windows
in boot camp or through another avenue because she enjoys mudding and uses
VIP mud which is made only for windows so will likely need to use this in
the short term at the very least until she can find a client that works as
well with voiceover on the Mac.
I thank all responses you guys can give us and thank you all in
welcoming me to the list.

Take care,
Shannon Gerdts

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello.

Welcome to the group.

I have had a Mac for almost two years although I still use windows at work and
at home on my Mac at home, although not a lot.

I think there is a place for all platforms, it really depends on what you want
to do.

I love my I Mac not just because of Voice Over, but quality hardware and it
just works.

However in my opinion, Windows runs better on a Mac. Besides Boot Camp, there
is VMWare Fusion which you can get from VMWare.com. It's easy to install
windows 7 as VMWare makes the process accessible.

I hope this helps for now.

Kawal.

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Alex Hall
Well, if you have iOS devices there are more advantages, since things like
contacts, notes, calendars, and more sync to all your devices. You can, for
instance, do a lot of typing in reminders or contacts on the mac, and then the
changes will appear on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

I'll not talk about the other advantages of the Mac, since they are basically
the same for sighted and blind users so any Gogle search can give you more than
I could think of. I will mention the cost of screen readers, though: vo is
free, whereas most Windows screen readers cost money. However, the free NVDA
screen reader nullifies this point somewhat.

I still don't like browsing the web on the mac as much as on windows, but I
have grown used to it. Still, I like the windows approach to the internet much
more (well, technically, I like windows scree readers' approaches to it). Aside
from that, and having less hotkeys in dialogs (balanced by the ability to
assign custom hotkeys to items in the dropdown menus), I can't think of
disadvantages except, of course, the price.

I use both Bootcamp and a virtual machine solution, so both avenues are open to
you assuming you have a license key for your copy of windows. I'm not
suggesting you have an illegal copy, I'm saying you will need the 25-character
code to re-authorize your copy of windows if you want it to work normally. You
can find isos of Windows online and use them, but they will expire and you
could run into some problems if that happens. The bootcamp vs vm debate is also
something I will not get into here, as it has little to do specifically with
the blind and so information you find online will apply to you as much as
anyone else.

If you have additional questions, let me know.

RE: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Jamie Pauls
I will add that there are quite a number of podcasts that will help with
training, but unfortunately there is not a book for learning the Mac that
would compare with the iOS books from National Braille Press. I was a bit
surprised that there are not any current books from RFBD related to
switching from Windows to the Mac. There are a couple from Bookshare, but
not all graphics are spoken. They are, however, useable.

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Shannon,

It seems to me that the question of switching to a Mac from Windows is a little
more involved than just looking at the fact that a laptop quit after 3 or 4
years. Given the cost difference between Windows and Mac laptops, your
prospective purchase of a Mac would have to last you maybe twice as long as
that Windows laptop did, if you're concerned about bang for the buck. And given
the speed with which technology advances, I think it is highly doubtful that a
Macbook you buy today will be satisfactory in say, 7 years. Sure, the screen
reader comes with the Mac, so there is no cost there. But there are good free
or inexpensive alternatives on the Windows side that largely obviate the cost
advantage of the built in screen reader on the Mac. I have not tried Windows on
my Mac, so I can't comment on that aspect of your question.
What other things besides mudding does your wife do with her pc? And which
operating system and screen reader is she familiar with? Will she keep on using
those if she stays with Windows? If she uses something like Jaws and Win xp and
would now find herself needing to move to Windows 8 plus continually upgrading
Jaws, then the Mac with its learning curve might not be such a big deal, and
the cost of the Mac versus the ongoing cost of Jaws upgrades makes the Mac look
more attractive. If, on the other hand, she is ok with NVDA and Windows 7, or
System Access and Windows 7, then the question is, what advantage is there in
switching?

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Kerri
Hello,

I will do my best to chime in on this subject.

I used windows since 1995 in college and 1998 at home. I found the switch fro
Windows to Mac rather arduous because my computer had a couple not serious
issues and I didn't have training (I hadn't found this list yet) Once the
learning curve was over, I find Mac easier and more intuitive but there are
some things I like better about windows to this day. I like the feedback that
voice over provides, for example, when copying and pasting, but I like burning
css on windows better. For utilizing talking communities chat client, I prefer
windows but for Skype I prefer Mac.

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Phil Halton

I have Windows7 in a bootcamp partition on an iMac running Mountain Lion.

Both work just fine, although I've been concentrating on learning the mac
and haven't used the bootcamp for months (I have another windows box I use
regularly).

In my opinion, there is no contest between windows/jaws and Mac for
productivity software. MS Office with Jaws is far and away a superior
productivity tool. I understand that there is relatively good access to
Mac's iWork suite, but there is just no comparison between the two.
Aside from that, the mac is interesting if a little limited in accessibility
compared to windows/jaws. Windows just has alot more choices for accessible
programs than does the Mac.

so she is tossing around the idea of a Mac. However, before making the
decision to just jump into the decision she would like to get as much

works as well with voiceover on the Mac.

Accessible white Noise Generators

2013-04-03 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello all.
I'm wondering if any of you have found any white noise generators that work
well with VoiceOver?
It doesn't matter if they are web based or not, but any suggestions would be
welcome.
Thanks,

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Donna Goodin
One thing I would add is that I feel like having Voiceover integrated into the
IOS is a huge advantage in terms of smoothness of operation. I've used Windows
with JAWS since 1995. Since July 2009 I've use a Mac at home, and most of the
time Windows at work. I agree with the person who said that sometimes I prefer
browsing the internet in Windows, but most of the time, apart from that, I'd
rather be on my Mac. One thing that I notice a lot is how often in Windows I
find myself dealing with screens where the information is not spoken and is not
shown in braille. These can be system notifications, software screens, etc. I
absolutely never have that problem on my Mac. Even when upgrading the OS, you
can still have feedback with Voiceover. And speaking of upgrading, I also
really like the fact that when I upgrade to a new version of Mac IOS I also get
the newest version of Voiceover, thus avoiding the situation that can happen in
Windows where unless you spend $200 on a new SMA, you may not be able to
upgrade to the latest version of Windows, because your version of JAWS won't
support it.

I would also say that very rarely do I feel like pounding my Mac into a pile of
dust, and I probably feel like doing that to my PC at least three times a week.

I must agree with Donna here. May I also add that even when a program in the

I also like that when a program is doing something, we hear busy or ready

Hi there
Personally, I like TextEdit and pages better than I like in this word. This is

Also, my husband has a Windows computer which has just 13 on it. So, if I have

That is something we need added for the Macintosh. I hope this information

In my opinion it is very worth it. Every computer has hiccups and problems but
the Mac seems to have far fewer. But don't think that once you get it that it
will be the same as a windows machine. You will get frustrated with it and want
to smash it with a hammer at first but keep with it and once you do master it
you will wish you have always used a Mac to begin with a mac. I now only rarely
use my Windows computer for games.

Hi Donna,
You know, it is also possible to get stuck behind the no upgrade 8-ball with a
Mac. It isn't the screen reader, it is the hardware at issue, and then you have
to go spend a whole lot more than 200 bucks to get the latest screen reader
features that are only available with the new os. Same with i-devices, but
that's a different subject. IPad 1 anybody?

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Well, but that's true of any computer system. If you tried to put Windows 8 on
a computer you bought in 1995 you would have a problem. :) But for Mac, you
9only have to contend with the hardware, not the hardware and the screen reader.
On Apr 3, 2013, at 6:22 PM, Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi Donna,
You know, it is also possible to get stuck behind the no upgrade 8-ball with
a Mac. It isn't the screen reader, it is the hardware at issue, and then you
have to go spend a whole lot more than 200 bucks to get the latest screen
reader features that are only available with the new os. Same with i-devices,
but that's a different subject. IPad 1 anybody?

Re: importing windows bookmarks into safari

2013-04-03 Thread Esther
Hi Phil,

The general way to import bookmarks from any browser into any other browser is
to use the File menu option to Export your bookmarks from the first browser,
copy the file over (if you're importing into a browser that's on another
computer),and then to use the File menu option of the second browser to
import.

In the case of Internet Explorer, I would rename the file extension from .htm
to .html before importing into any other browser (not just Safari), since
.htm is specific to Internet Explorer.

If you want to read more details about using bookmarks and the way they are
organized in Safari, you can read one of my archived posts from this list:
• Re: importing favorites from ie to safari
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg60672.html

You can generally find answers to topics in the Mail Archives. For example, I
didn't remember which posts I had written on this subject, but I was sure I had
written on this topic, so I went to the search text box of the macvisionaries
mail archive page, and typed in:
from:Esther importing favorites
(without the quotation marks), and pressed return. Then, on the page of search
results, which tells you the number of matches, gives you the links with the
subject titles, date, short excerpt of post containing your search terms, and
the author of the post, I just activated the first link and checked the
content.

You can also search the mac-access list posts on the Mail Archive, since you're
also a member of that list. And one of the items that was discussed on the
mac-access list that was not discussed on this list is SafariSort -- which is a
free application that lets you alphabetically organize your bookmarks that you
can find at the Macupdate site.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Inserting Scanned Signature

2013-04-03 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello, Everyone,

I need to insert my scanned signature into a Pages document. I scan the
signature using Image Capture, but I must have some setting incorrect, because
the person looking at the result says that the image still needs to be cropped
because it shows the entire page and my signature is barely visible. Note that
I set the width to two inches, just an approximation, and the height was
adjusted to automatically 2.66 inches, or something close to that. The
Constrain Proportions box is checked. For scanning, it was set to U.S.
Letter. I don't recall any other settings in particular.

Thanks,

Harry

You want to go to this site.

http://www.hairersoft.com/pro.html

Go there and get it instead of from the app store. Why? It's my understanding
that the version you get off the web site I just gave you-the actual web site
for the app-is more stable than the app store version.

Re: importing windows bookmarks into safari

Thank you Esther, you must be a very devoted person to have all this
information at hand. And, yes, I'll try to make more use of the

  Hi Phil,

The general way to import bookmarks from any browser into any other browser
is to use the File menu option to Export your bookmarks from the first
browser, copy the file over (if you're importing into a browser that's on
another computer),and then to use the File menu option of the second
browser to import.

In the case of Internet Explorer, I would rename the file extension from
.htm to .html before importing into any other browser (not just Safari),
since .htm is specific to Internet Explorer.

For example,
I didn't remember which posts I had written on this subject, but I was sure I
had written on this topic, so I went to the search text box of the
macvisionaries mail archive page, and typed in:
  from:Esther importing favorites
(without the quotation marks), and pressed return. Then, on the page of
search results, which tells you the number of matches, gives you the links with
the subject titles, date, short excerpt of post containing your search terms,
and the author of the post, I just activated the first link and checked the
content.

You can also search the mac-access list posts on the Mail Archive, since
you're also a member of that list. And one of the items that was discussed on
the mac-access list that was not discussed on this list is SafariSort -- which
is a free application that lets you alphabetically organize your bookmarks that
you can find at the Macupdate site.

  HTH. Cheers,

  Esther

Re: Serious question about Mac vs. Windows

2013-04-03 Thread Mary Otten
Nobody said anything about a computer bought in 1995. The original question had
to do with a laptop that broke after 3-4 years, and the person wasn't too happy
and was considering a Mac. Since upgrades to the screen reader are tied to the
os on a Mac, if your Mac is too old to get the new upgrade, you also don't get
the new VO features, and that can be a computer that is 3 to 4 years old. I
have an old xp machine that I sure wouldn't put Windows 8 on, but it is
something like 6 years old, not 4, and when I go to replace it, if I do, I'll
pay substancially less than what I would pay for a new Mac. I'm not saying that
the Mac isn't good. I just think the decision to switch is a lot more
complicated than deciding it is a good deal because you get the screen reader
buiult in to the os.
