Hiding preview pane in Mail?

2024-03-29 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi, please can anyone tell me if/how it’s possible to hide the preview pane
in Mail on the Mac? I believe sighted users can do this by altering the
divider line by dragging it. With VoiceOver, I interact with a vertical
splitter, but cannot get it any less than 29%, so the preview pane is still
showing. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Catherine

Scheduling a zoom meeting on Mac

2024-03-10 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Has anyone successfully scheduled a zoom meeting on Mac recently?
I've done this in the past but not for quite some time and when I
tried just now it was very problematic. When I was trying to type the
title of the event it kept jumping me either to the box to type
recipients or to the button to complete the schedule. Eventually I
got to type the title but the other problem was trying to use the date
and time pickers. With those I tried a mixture of quick nav on and
quick NAV off, using cursors left and right, typing, pressing the
VoiceOver cursor and pressing enter. Nothing seemed to work
consistently or understandably to me, eventually I managed to schedule
the time but I have no idea how or what I would do next time. Also
once the event appeared in my calendar and I went into the context
menu the item to email all participants was dimmed and I don't know
why that would be.

Does anyone have any ideas how to use the date/time pickers? And any
other info about how you schedule a meeting?

Thanks,
Catherine

Re: VMware Fusion/Player

2024-02-08 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Sorry to come in with no offer of help but a rather basic question on
thids topic. Am I right in thinking from the discussion here that
people are/have been able to use Vmware Fusion on silicon-based Macs?
And that that had been working fine until Sonoma came along? The
reason I ask is because I used to use Fusion on an older, intel-based
Macbook but thought when I bought a newer (2021) Macbook that the
silicon-based Macs couldn't be used with Fusion. I gather from this
discussion and just reading at
https://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2023/02/microsoft-now-officially-supports-windows-on-mac-computers-with-apple-silicon.html
that that changed? But now Fusion isn't working with Sonoma. Is that
an accurate summary of the situation?

Thanks,
Catherine

Stopping zoom voice announcements?

2023-04-05 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Please does anyone know whether/how it's possible to stop the system
voice on Mac announcing things like "Catherine has joined this
channel" when using zoom? I've gone into the preferences in zoom,
accessibility, screenreader and unticked everything, quit and
re-opened zoom and I'm still getting announcements all the time about
people having "joined this channel". It's really annoying and makes
zoom basically unusable on large group calls. Does this happen for
other people?

Thanks,
Catherine

Moving through headings on web pages?

2022-03-31 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

All of a sudden I am unable to move through headings on webpages by
pressing H. This is also applying to other elements like I can't move
through check boxes by pressing see. I am imagining that somehow I
have altered a setting in VoiceOver perhaps accidentally by pressing a
certain keystroke. Years ago when I got my first Mac I seem to
remember having to change the setting somewhere so that I could just
press H to move through headings instead of having to press VO plus
command plus H. But I can't find information about this, Apple's
documentation that I have read so far tells me that to move through
headings I need to press VO plus command plus H. But until today,
when I had quick NAV on, I could just press H.

Please can anyone help? How can I set it up again so that I only have
to press H?

Thanks,
Catherine

In my case, this doesn't seem to work. If I type my password and
press Enter nothing happens. The one time I got a sighted person to
look at it they said the password box was on the screen but nothing
was happening when I was typing. It's like I have to bring focus to

Logging in on Macbook

2021-11-20 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I recently got a new Macbook and am a bit puzzled about what's meant
to happen when logging in. On my nine years old Macbook, when VO
starts at the log-on screen, it says I'm in a scroll area, and from
there Ih select the user account and press it, then type in the
password.

On the new one, the first thing VO says is "sticky keys on" (I do use
sticky keys and have them switched on). As I did set up Touch Id and
ticked all the boxes for its use in System Preferences, I thought
after VO said anything I must be at the log-on screen so put my
finger on the touch id but nothing happened. A sighted person said
there was a box for me to type a password but when I typed nothing
happened. It seems the only thing that brings focus to the password
field is me swiping on the trackpad. When I do that, VO says
"Voiceover on" and announces the password field and I'm able to log
in.

So I'm wondering if I should be able to log in using my finger?
Perhaps my finger's not consistent or the sensor needs wiping or
whatever which I can try but I just wanted to make sure I'm
understanding correctly when to place my finger. Since I've only set
up one user account on this new macbook it's not surprising VO doesn't
let me know about a scroll area with users to pick from, but it seems
a bit odd to me that it doesn't say anything else other than "sticky
keys on" until I swipe on the trackpad. Is this similar to other
people's experiences?

Thanks,
Catherine

Telegram messenger

2021-04-05 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Is anyone using telegram messenger? I've got it on my iphone but have
trouble with it. If I try and search for a user the screen seems to
go blank/VO won't read anything on the screen other than the cancel
button. Also I did join a group a while ago which I expect has had
plenty of messages in it but I've not been notified of them. So I
thought I'd look in settings and tapped notifications but nothing on
the screen seems to change after I tap notifications.

Is anyone getting on ok with this app and what platform are you using it on?

Thanks,
Catherine

VO Reading from inactive tabs in Safari on the Mac

2021-01-24 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I have a pretty old MacBook Pro and I’ve only just updated to sierra. I am
now having a problem in Safari that I’ve never experienced before. I’m
trying to read a webpage but voiceover keeps reading out what sounds like
snippets of information from some other tabs which are present bit which
are not the active tab I’m trying to read. It is making the use of Safari
impossible because the speech reading the inactive tab interrupts what I’m
trying to read and I cannot get it to stop or when I do get it to stop and
start reading what I want, in a few seconds it will start reading from an
inactive tab again. Is this a known bug or has anyone else experienced it?

Hi,

Thanks so much for this. I wasn’t really very familiar with the screen
recognition feature and this was what was causing the problem. Have
switched it off now. I agree that I do like image recognition to, find it
helpful and makes things more interesting.

Strange focus/reading problems in Safari on my iphone

2021-01-10 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I'm having a weird problem with safari on my iphone which basically
makes safari unusable. When I try to edit/type a web address, VO does
not read the keyboard, though I'm told by a sighted person that it's
there - VO just makes those sounds on it like it does when there's
nothing on the screen. Even if I double tap where the keys show,
nothing appears in the address bar. Additionally, the buttons at the
bottom of safari for "back", "forward", "bookmarks" e.t.c. are just
announced by VO as "left arrow" for back, "right arrow" for forward
and nothing at all except "tab" for the others - it calls them "tab"
instead of "button" like it does normally. Apparently the icons for
those buttons do look different to normal.

If I view a page via the gmail app - where it opens the link kind of
in safari within gmail - all is normal and fine. But if I press that
button which says "open in safari" it goes to the normal safari and
goes wrong/odd again.

I tried closing all the tabs, quitting and restarting safari,
restarting my phone and restarting VO which made no difference.

Does this ring any bells for anyone?

I checked to see if there any ios updates available and there aren't.
The only other thing I can think of that might have made a difference
was that yesterday, in between the time safari was working normally
and when it started behaving oddly, I put in a lightning to 3.5mm
adapter to use some earphones. When I put it in, the phone asked me
whether this accessory was to use headphones and I said yes. It also
said something about being able to change this option later somewhere.
I'm no longer using the adapter as I was borrowing it for a few hours.
But I'm wondering if somehow that made safari go wrong. But I can't
find where to change that option - have looked everywhere I can think
and searched in settings. Perhaps anything relating to that adapter
would only appear when I connect it again. I'm going to borrow it
again but has anyone any idea where I'd look for info about/to change
options relating to that adapter?

If not, I guess it's a phone reset...

Thanks,
Catherine

Amadeus Pro insertion point question

2021-01-03 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I am new to using Amadeus Pro and am working my way through Jonathan
Mosen's tutorial - though it's a few years old, I'm hoping I can still
learn a lot from it.

I'm having a problem understanding what's going on with the insertion
point while the music is not playing. In the tutorial, it says that
while the file is not playing, pressing left and right arrows will
move the insertion point. Then he demonstrates this by saying "if I
press the left arrow key we're at the beginning of the file" and we
hear some audio playing. But when I press left arrow with the file
paused, I don't hear audio. He then goes on to talk about how it just
so happens the insertion point is where he wants it to make the cut he
wants. But I don't understand how he knows where the insertion point
is.

So I'm wondering whether, while sound is not playing, pressing the
left/right arrow keys is supposed to make some sound play. If not,
how can we know where the insertion point is? Perhaps this behaviour
has changed with later versions of Amadeus. Or perhaps in the
tutorial he's doing something else he doesn't describe to make the
sound at the insertion point play - though this seems very unlikely.

Please can anyone help me understand what's meant to happen to the
insertion point when we move it with the file not playing? And/or how
can I find out where the insertion point is?

Thanks,
Catherine

Re: Navigating by page/discovering page number in Voice Dream Reader?

2020-10-22 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi Phil,

Thanks for the info. I’ve trid a different book now.which does work
properly with page numbers and navigation so itmust be the particular book
not having the page info embedded which is a shame. I will have to try
reading it a different way on my computer instead I think.

Thanks for all the help with Voice Dream Reader, I’m making better use of
it now in any case.

your navigation options don’t show page then that is an indication that
this EPUB or whatever format book does not have page information embedded.

Re: Navigating by page/discovering page number in Voice Dream Reader?

2020-10-21 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi Kerry, all,

H, what a puzzle. I updated to the latest version of Voice Dream
Reader just in case that was making a difference but still with this
epub book, no ability to move by page and no information about the
page I'm on. In the Navigation Units I have Bookmark, Highlight,
Heading, Paragraph, Sentence, 60 seconds, 30 seconds and 15 seconds
but no Page. And in the info about where I am, I just have a
percentage and what seem to be estimates of the amount of time already
read and that remaining.

I wonder if it's something about this particular book. Has anyone any
suggestions of sources of any epub books I could just try out to see
if they work better?

Also, has anyone any other suggestions as to how I could go about
reading an epub on the iphone, being able to copy/paste from the book
and realise which page I'm on for the sake of referencing in an
academic document? Perhaps I could try converting the epub to text
but I'm not sure whether that would retain the page numbering
information...

Thanks,
Catherine

2020-10-20 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

In Voice Dream Reader, is it possible to navigate by page and/or find
out what page number I'm currently reading? I read somewhere that
navigation by page was possible but "page" isn't in the available list
of navigation units when I swipe up and down on the "navigation unit"
button. This is an epub file.

Thanks,

Hello Kerry,

Marvellous - thanks for your help, this works great. And in fact I
now noticed the hint from VO which gave instructions to this effect,
was a bit tired when I last tried...

I have another Voice Dream Reader question but will put it in a
separate thread...

Thanks,

Selecting text in Voice Dream Reader?

2020-10-19 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I believe in Voice Dream Reader we're meant to be able to select text
and then copy it but I can't work out how to do this.

I've tried two ways:
1. In the text, using the rotor setting to select some text. VO says
the text is selected but I don't seem to be able to do anything with
it after that. There's no rotor setting for Edit like there usually
is when copying is an option. There's a button for "Headings
Bookmarks and Highlights" but if I press that button and go in there
and select "highlights", it says there are zero highlights.

2. I used the "Select Text" button and again it says text is
selected but I have the same problem already described - not being
able to copy the text I've apparently selected/being told there are
no highlights.

Please can anyone help? What can I do once text is selected?

Thanks,
Catherine

Orbit Reader with Mac?

2020-09-02 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Is anyone using the Orbit Reader 20 braille display with Mac? I've
got the Orbit working fine with my iphone but can't get it to work
with Mac. I'm using OS 10.11.6 and according to the Orbit manual it
should work with 10.11. I've tried USB and bluetooth, and I've tried
it in emulation mode for the Refreshabraille 18 but not working at
all. Is anyone here using the Orbit with a Mac and what version of OS
are you on, or has anyone any ideas?

Thanks,

Passwords in Safari problem

2019-03-14 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I'm having a problem with Safari not filling in passwords for me and
wondering if anyone can help.

There's a website asking me to log in which I thought I'd told Safari
to remember the password for. But it's not already filled in. So I
typed what I thought was the password in and then Safari asked me if I
want it to update the stored password. So obviously it is storing the
password. So I can't understand why it hasn't filled it in. In
Safari preferences autofill all the checkboxes are checked.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Catherine

Re: CleanMyMac question

2019-01-26 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Ah thanks for looking at it. Well my VO isn't saying "window" much
either - but saying "unknown" when I move around inside the table.

I use Quick Nav a fair bit because things are pretty inefficient for
me without it as I can only use one hand and rely on sticky keys.

Thanks,

Re: CleanMyMac question

2019-01-22 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Ah thanks for the info. Well I've made some progress in that, inside
the first table, if I have Quick Nav off and just arrow up and down it
successfully moves through the table but VO still just keeps saying
"unknown". But after I move in that table, then get out of it I'm
able to read the explanation of what I've selected in the table so
I'll be able to use it - I just feel disappointed because in
CleanMyMac 3 I was able to read every part of the screen. Are you
saying that you are able to read the items in that table?

Thanks,
Catherine

CleanMyMac question

2019-01-19 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Until recently I used CleanMyMac to clean up my system but it prompted
me a few times to try the new CleanMyMac x and today I tried the
latter. But I'm having problems reading the screen. When it opened
there were two windows open - one of which had a table in it among
other things. In the old CleanMyMac 3 there was a table containing
various cleanup tools, I would choose one from the table and press
"scan". But in CleanMyMac x VO was unable to read the items in the
table - just kept saying "unknown". I looked at the other window and
in that there was just a "scan" button which I pressed, thinking maybe
after it had scanned VO would be able to read the items in the table.
It finished scanning but still I wasn't able to read the items in that
table and basically I'm not sure what to do next and would want to
know what I'm going to delete before I do so.

There is a button saying something like "unlock full version" so I'm
wondering if maybe those items in the table are disabled until you buy
it.

Is anyone using CleanMyMac x and are you able to read those items in
the table? Does anyone recall trying out the product and whether you
were able to read the table then? I don't want to buy it if I can't
read everything. Perhaps I don't need to worry about the table - if
anyone's using CleanMyMac x could you describe how you go about using
it?

Thanks,
Catherine

sometimes I've had to use CleanMyMac to get around it.

Re: How do I access applications

2018-12-24 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Just to add, because I don't think anyone's said so so far, you need
to be in Finder for the keystroke Command Shift A to work. So to
explore the apps and open one of them here's a Finder method. Note I
would have Quick Nav off while doing this and my view in Finder is set
to columns which might affect things, so if it doesn't work let us
know:

Hold down Command and repeatedly press Tab until VO says "Finder",
then let go of Command. This switches you to Finder.
Press Command Shift A which is the shortcut to the apps folder.
Arrow up and down to go through the list of apps. When you find one
you want to open, press Command down arrow, which will open it.

Re: Will my computer continue downloading while sleeping?

2017-10-10 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I don't know for sure, but I think this is to do with whether you have
the computer to sleep or the display to sleep. I don't know how
you're putting yours to sleep or whether it applies to Mac minis, but
I use the energy saver settings for my macbook and there's a
difference between computer sleep and display sleep so maybe when the
computer sleeps it doesn't continue downloading, whereas if you just
put the display to sleep it should continue.

Re: I’m worried that FaceID is going to suck—and here’s why

2017-09-13 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
I too get sick when people whine - including when people whine about
words/sentiments that weren't even expressed in the first place.

I didn't want to start people off venting about the problems of the
blindness community. I only wondered how the quitting/loading of VO
and accessing home and the app switcher could be done without a home
button - wondering how something can be done does not equal saying it
can't be done. I am curious and hopeful to see how this pans out; at
the same time, yes, a little concerned as sometimes when changes
happen, usability can become problematic or other problems arise - but
I am not whining. I am wondering and imagining and questioning, and
there is nothing wrong with that.

Excuse me but I wasn't "inventing worse case scenarios". I was
reasonably and legitimately wondering how we will do certain things
without the home button, not saying we wouldn't be able to - I
speculated on how it could be done. And by the way I am pleased with
Voiceover, though it has problems as well. You inferred a lot from my
message that wasn't actually there.

wanted to try converting it to the bn's own braille format you could

Re: transferring and downloading and attaching with a memory stick on Mac

Hi Reggie,

Hm I don't know why that would be that they are named differently
on the Mac. Perhaps next you could just try creating a folder on that
stick from the Mac and also save a file onto it just to make sure the
stick is working properly with the Mac. As you said you're beginning
with this I'll give step-by-step instructions as to how I would do
this. Doubtless there are lots of different ways of doing things so
you might get different instructions from someone else but this is
what I would do.

Re: transferring and downloading and attaching with a memory stick on Mac

2017-08-29 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hello Reggie,

Clarifying what you're asking - are you saying that when your memory
stick is in your braillenote it has folders called books and lessons,
but when you put the stick in your Mac those folders aren't there and
you get a load of numbers instead?

Re: Weird issue with Safari.

2016-09-27 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I wonder if it's auto-completing the URL. Mine does this and makes a
menu-type sound while it's doing it, though it doesn't say anything
about smart text.

Does it still do it if you type a URL you've never been to before?

If it is auto-complete I don't know how to switch it off. Presumably
in preferences somewhere, if it can be switched off.

Re: Using Vienna help

2014-06-24 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info, and everything you said before. I have it set to
vertical layout but this approach still isn't working - I can arrow up
and down the folder list, press right when finding a folder I want,
arrow up and down the article list. But then when I press VO j it
jumps me back to the folder list, not the html content. Don't know
why.

But the good news is I found another way which seems to work well.
After finding an article I want I press enter. I haven't set it up to
open in external browser and it seems when I press enter it opens in a
new tab but doesn't select that tab. So I then press command option
right arrow which selects the next tab and also puts VO in the html
content. When I've finished reading I press command w to close that
tab and I land back where I was in the article list. So in case
anyone else has trouble perhaps you can try that method as well.
Mysterious as to why the first method isn't working for me but never
mind.

Thanks for your help,
Catherine

On 6/23/14, Geoff Stephens geoffsli...@gmail.com wrote:
Make sure to use the vertical layout. Choose Layout from the View Menu and
 set it to vertical.

You should be able to use the up and down arrows in the Folder List, press
the Right Arrow when the desired folder is located, then review the article
list using up and down arrows without having to interact with anything.

If you choose to use VO J at that point, it should switch between the folder
list, article list and the HTML area that displays the article depending on
 how much is downloaded.

Pressing Enter should open the article. I find what works best is to set it
so that the article opens in the external browser. Set this in
 Preferences/General.
I would have given up a long while back if I had to use the menu to open an
 article.

I think I posted a lot of other things I found on the other list. Well, not
 too much more but.

Re: heading levels

2014-05-07 Thread Catherine Turner
Thanks for the info, will have a look in Getting Started Guide for
Activities. Just to say though, I have read a lot of the Getting
Started Guide and learnt much from it, but it doesn't always suit
people's learning styles to sit and read a guide like that from
beginning to end. I do learn stuff that way, but even if I'd read the
entire guide that's no guarantee that I would have absorbed all the
information. I've also explored the utility and a lot of the menus in
full but that's no guarantee of understanding everything I find there.
It takes experimentation, confidence, time and effort to learn
things, not just looking and reading. That's why groups like this one
get formed - so people can help each other out. Please don't assume
that people haven't read the guides or that reading them would make
these questions unnecessary. When I asked the question I thought
maybe there was a podcast demonstrating this feature - and yes I could
search applevis for activities but that would most likely yield a
huge amount of results and so sometimes the most efficient way to get
a pointer is to ask on a forum such as this.

Hi,

Apologies if anyone's already replied to this but it didn't come up as

It would help if you could give some examples of websites where it's

 Hello Cathrine,

I encountered the same problem of getting stuck in the combo box. I found a
way to do the remapping of any key in the to combo box to the grave
accent key. Here's what needs to be done.

 1) VO to the first shift check box and park the mouse on it by pressing
 VO+command+ F5.
 2) VO right arrow to the first combo box and press the grave accent key.
Don't open the combo box with VO Space, just move to it and press the accent
 key.
 3) Now VO right arrow to the next combo box and here you do want to open the
box, so press VO Space on it. That'll bring up a list. arrow down and back
up to select the insert key in the list.
 4) now to get out of that list, you need to turn of VoiceOver with command
F5, then do a mouse click by pressing down on the mouse pad (careful not to
move the mouse, just press straight down on the pad).
 5) turn VoiceOver back on and you'll be out of the combo box and you can use
VO right and left arrows to read your selections and make sure they're
right. then move to and click the ok button.
 6) back in the previous screen , the table should now contain your remap.
You can uncheck the enable remappings checkbox and the remap will remain
in the table, but won't be active if for any reason you don't want to use it
but don't want to delete it.

BTW: There's no particular significance to parking the mouse on the shift
checkbox, you just need to have it parked on some element so when you click
the mouse after shutting off VO, it'll snap the system out of that weird
combbo box situation. I successfully followed this procedure twice to test
it out and make sure it works before sending the message.
 Good Luck.

Re: An explanation of interaction required

2014-02-28 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi April,

Apologies if you've already talked about this separately, I am rarely
up-to-date with list mail. But what resources have you tried for
learning Mac/Voiceover? I found the getting started guide (which is
available both on the Mac and online) helpful. Also David
Woodbridge's podcasts. Or have you considered getting training face
to face with someone?

If you start a separate thread I'll try and help you though I am
relatively new myself. I use Safari all the time and Mail sometimes
so maybe I can help, I don't use Pages though.

working on Calendar and Pages. At one point. What works one time doesn't
 work another.

It would be great to find step by step instructions so I can do basic
things, and not sit there listening to beeps instead of it doing what I
 need it to do.

I listened to the list of commands hundreds of times. There are hundreds
of undefined commands. It's kinds like listening to a foreign language,
with no reference to the the language I speak. I have no idea what, or
where a command is supposed to be used. There is no logic to the command,
or the labels given to them.

If I could find a text copy of these talkies, perhaps I could eventually
 learn how to use VoiceOver.

If I don't I likely won't be using a computer in a year. It seems every
setting I adjust based on something someone says breaks it further.

Those of you who use it, make it sound so simple. You know the language
and terms, the new user does not. Watching someone use those terms and
what they accomplish would be a good thing, if I could hear the speaker.
Which, I can't. It's always low toned males. Way below my hearing level.

 open
an app, and it's so easy to teach. From anywhere, command-space, type in

people would actually use a computer, whereas teaching it the long way

think it has to be that inefficient. Clearly, my way isn't radically
different, but I think more variety and more use of all the different

all the podcasts, so don't mean to sound critical, but I think there's an

over-emphasis on not using all the features when they would be helpful and

A small point I would dispute is David Woodbridge starting his

Audio/headset problems

2014-02-28 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi,

I'm relatively new to this list and so not yet familiar with what's
tolerated in terms of mentioning Windows. I mention it in my below
message because I think it's relevant to the problems I'm having and
my knowledge/desire of how it might work. If I've gone off topic
please cut me some slack, it's hard to know what list to post on
sometimes when you need Mac knowledge but Windows behaviour is also
relevant.

I'm using a Mac (10.8.4) plus Windows 7 in a virtual machine via
Vmware Fusion.I use a headset sometimes. If I connect the headset
before switching on the Mac or
before starting up Windows, it automatically becomes available for
both Windows and Mac but if I connect it after starting up Windows I
am asked whether I want to connect to Mac or Windows.

I'm having some audio problems on the Mac side of things and wonder if
anyone can help.

My headset, a Logitech H800, is listed three times in System
Preferences/audio/output. This headset does have two modes -
bluetooth and wireless - but I'm not sure why that should result in
*three* entries. The first issue is it would be really nice if Mac
could automatically start using the headset when I connect it, (after
telling it to connect to Mac if applicable) but this doesn't happen.
Any way to make that happen?

Secondly, conversely to the OS, I like to set Voiceover to use the
headset manually. THis is because I like to verify the headset is
functioning before Voiceover tries to use it otherwise I get silence.
However, a couple of times I forgot which of the three Logitech
entries to choose from available options for audio output in Voiceover
Utility. I realised straight away that I chose the wrong one because
VO went silent. I thought this wouldn't be a problem because it's
meant to revert to the previous setting if you don't hit the confirm
button. But it didn't revert. So I was left with no audio and not
enough memory/confidence to try and set it back to built-in output
without speech. I switched off the computer and hoped that when I
restarted, if I disconnected the headset,it would revert but it
didn't. I got speech in the log-on screen but none after that. After
about 5 times switching on and off again speech came back to the
built-in output. But obviously this was very frustrating and
time-consuming.

Similarly sometimes I have been silly enough to forget to tell VO to
stop using the headset before pulling out the dongle. Then, even if I
stick it back in again, I lose speech. A message appears on screen
saying Mac can't connect to the headset and I need to hit stop using
headset or similar before audio comes out of the speakers again. I
wish and hope there was some way for Mac to automatically give up on
using an audio device after a certain amount of time. In this respect
I much prefer Windows behaviour which simply stops using it when I
disconnect. All the problems I'm having could be solved if it just
started using it when connected and stopped when disconnected.

Is there any way of setting up a hot key or something to force all
audio to revert back to built-in output? Any other suggestions as to
what I can do in these situations? Obviously if I had a braille
display connected that would help, but I can't get my Braillenote Apex
to work with VO - that's another story.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks,
Catherine

Re: Folder Action New Item Alert Now Works In Latest Mavericks Update

2014-02-28 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi,

I'm thoroughly confused. To get a sound to play do we need to do
something in folder actions setup or services preferences? Does
this apply only to the latest osx or earlier versions too?

I have 10.8.4. I was able to find folder actions setup (from the
shortcut menu VO Shift M, not the main menu VO m). I think I added an
action or a script or something to the downloads folder. I chose
edit script to see if I could figure if I had chosen the right
script; and the comments in the script said it would make a
notification appear when an item was added to the folder. It didn't
mention anything about sounds.

How can I check I've done what I wanted? I'll find out next time I
download anything but just wondering if anyone can explain what's the
role of service preferences as opposed to folder actions and do I
need to add a script or an action to a folder? The discussion seems
to use these phrases interchangeably and I don't know whether they
really are all the same thing.

Re: An explanation of interaction required

2014-02-27 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi,

I'm only a year into using the Mac and still use Windows as well but
here's my take on it. While it can be a bit time consuming and fiddly
sometimes interacting with several layers I can see benefits to the
approach as well. For example, in Windows you have several different
keystrokes to accomplish similar goals to the VO interacting thing
i.e. accessing different parts of the screen. e.g. if you wanted to
access a toolbar on Windows (if you could access it) you would need to
sometimes press Control Tab or sometimes use something like the
JAWS/WE cursor. Whereas on the Mac, assuming the particular app is
accessible, you just move around the screen and pick which part of it
you want to use. I also think requiring us to interact with different
elements of the screen can give us a little more understanding of the
different visual elements which are present, which can help
particularly when working with sighted people. e.g. instead of
remembering in Windows ok if I press Alt space that gets me into the
menu where there's options to maximise/size the window, I can just
explore around the screen to verify/remind myself of what's actually
visually present. LIke I say, I can see pros and cons but these are
some of the pros in my opinion.

Dear List I wondered if some kind soul could explain the concept of

what the underlying premise is behind it. What are the benefits of setting
up a screen reader this way. I find interaction an irritation. On windows
in outlook I'm immediately in the messages list I don't have to interact
with the list first. To me it just feels like interaction is always another
keystroke between me and where I want to get to.

 Many Thanks Lee

Re: An explanation of interaction required

2014-02-27 Thread Catherine Turner
I echo the use of the tab key and Quick Nav. I use Quick Nav a lot of
the time and find it very efficient. You just need to get to learn
when it's appropriate/quick and when switching it off would serve you
better.

A small point I would dispute is David Woodbridge starting his
podcasts at a certain known point. I think this is the only way to
create a podcast which is consistent and applies to as wide a range of
people as possible. There are so many possible starting points
otherwise: I've just started Mail and my VO cursor is set to focus on
the keyboard focus; or not; or I want to start Mail with Quick Nav on
or off and so on. So I guess he picks a consistent starting point to
make the podcasts manageable and give people a consistent learning
experience.

I haven't herd enough to comment on whether too many trainers focus
too much on VO commands as opposed to the OS. I do know a lot of
Windows screen reader trainers do this. I would say that from reading
the VO Getting Started guide it was pretty clear which were VO
commands and which were OS ones so that's a good resource for anyone
who learns in that way...

 Hi,

There are two things here. Firstly, you do not have to interact much of the
time when people say you do, it's a case of learning the settings and the
operating system just like in Windows. For instance, when I go into Mail, my
VO is set to land me where the keyboard focus is so it lands me straight in
the message list. Personally, I think more emphasis should be put on real
world usage in these podcasts. Let me take David Woodbridge as an example.
His podcasts are generally excellent and helpful, but he makes what I,
personally, think are a couple of asumptions that just don't reflect the
natural way to interact with a computer. Firstly, he assumes that you always
start from a specific, known, position, and secondly, he only teaches
VoiceOver. Unless it is absolutely unavoidable, he does not teach built in
OS keystrokes and concepts. It would be comparable to teaching people using
Jaws only to move word by word using the insert key method, and to do
everything using the Jaws cursor rather than built in Windows keystrokes.
David's methods are great for getting people doing specific tasks, but often
not in the most efficient ways, and often not going deep enough or actually
explaining enough. I tend to think that most Mac teachers make this mistake,
I'm not picking on one person, just using the specific example as I know,
use, and value David's work a lot.

The concept of interaction, in my mind, is generally helpful. The idea is
that VoiceOver gives you an overview of what is on the screen and the
ability to get around it quickly. For instance, whereas in any Windows
screen reader, if you find a toolbar (Which you will only do if you know the
right keyboard commands), there is no quick way of getting past it. With
VoiceOver, each control, or element, appears as just that, an element. Some
elements you will generally want to deal with, which is where interaction
could become an issue, but many, you want the ability to skip over, so
VoiceOver is built on the idea that if you want to use it, you will interact
 with it.

There are a couple of things you can do to seriously limit how often you
have to interact. Check that your VoiceOver is set for initial position to
keyboard focus, not to first element. In most apps, you will then land
exactly where you want to be. Secondly, and I think this is default
behaviour, make sure the setting tab key interacts is set to on. This way,
whenever you use the tab key to get to a control, you will automatically be
interacting with it, and you won't have to uninteract to tab or shift-tab to
the previous control. Another piece of faulty advice is to never use the tab
key in Mac. Rather, you need to remember that the tab key will act a little
like it does in Windows, in that it will take you to the next control the
app dev thinks you might want to use it to get to, While it is always
advisable to learn apps using the VO keys navigation method, you may well
find that, when you know what you are doing, in many cases, you will use the
 tab key just as much.

Finally, I don't see how anyone who learns to use Quick Nav can find
interaction a problem. The ability to skip around and navigate without
moving your fingers at all is invaluable, and interaction becomes such an
easy process. Personally, unless I am in a file list or something, if I am
going to use a few navigation commands in a row, I always switch to Quick
Nav. The reason I don't in file lists? I don't want to interact, so I want
to use the built in, OS X keystrokes, to do things, simply arrowing up and
down lists, using command-down to open and command-up to close etc. As soon
as I press command-2, I am right in that list view so don't need to navigate
to it, and the same is true
