And they had no solution to a wiper on the same car that consistently
left smears on the windshield in the constant light rain of a western

the efficacy of the monowiper decreases over time proportional to the
age of the spring in the wiper arm (the solution is to buy a new arm,
readily available, or replace the spring with a stronger one from a
well-stocked hardware store).

One of the benefits of being a layperson is having the luxury of day
dream time. If I ponder a problem long enough - over a period of days or
weeks - I can quite often arrive at the the most logical solution.
The technically gifted professional mechanic, OTOH, must come up with a
solution ASAP, as he is on the clock. This may lead to misdiagnoses and
redundant or nonproductive fixes to seemingly complicated problems that are
often deceptively simple to resolve given the time to think about them...

When I take something to a specialist, it's because I lack the proper tool to do
it right. That's why it pisses me off to no end when every single time they
botch the job twice as badly as I would have if I'd done it with the wrong tools.

The only exception has been one particular engine machine shop. The worst thing
they ever did to me was fail to get a valve keeper fully installed one time. I
consider it my fault that the head was on the engine in the car before I noticed
as I installed the rocker arms. I stuffed a rope in the cylinder, rolled the
piston up against the rope and borrowed a top mount valve spring tool to fix it.

[MBZ] OT: Christnas outside the box

2011-11-07 Thread Scott and Gwen Ritchey
As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high

gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods --

merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This

year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine

concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift

giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes

there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in

a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates

from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some

health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned

detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a

book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down

the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift

receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or

driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift

certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about

a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this

isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town

Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or

motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thought this might be worth sharing:

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a

local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is

struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin

their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery

and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave

your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at

your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese

lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about

fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to

burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that

China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about

US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow

their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our

communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion

groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in

your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations,

and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other,

and isn't that what Christmas is about?

Does it have the tensioner adjuster to tighten up the belt? On my 79TD
there are no bolts actually holding the alternator, this tensioner
adjusts the alternator in/out to get the belt tight.

The other thing to check is the belt itself, but I am thinking the
tensioner, if it has one.

My old 220D did this. The alternator was bad, the bearing were shot

Have him check the bearings. Any noise, vibration, or ability to

Well, you might wish to bear in mind that many of your neighbors work in

If you stop buying all this nice asian stuff, those neighbors are going
to be laid off and stores will close etc.
Sadly it is a big world out there and whatever you do will affect you or

Not that I am anti-American, but in this age of a global economy, it's pretty
ludicrous to think that the Buy American approach is remotely practical.

Since I know I can't make a dent by boycotting foreign products, I continue to
do something I think is relevant and productive for the economy - I do
everything within my power to patronize locally owned privately held
businesses. This has been the mantra around our house for many years, and we go
out of our way to do it.

It may, and often does, cost me more, but in most cases it's incremental. I
look at this as a win-win, since it helps keep my neighbors in business as well
as keeps my hard earned money close to home.

[MBZ] Refilling SLS fluid - W123 300TD wagon

2011-11-07 Thread andrew strasfogel
I was chagrined when my recently refurbished 1985 300TD ran dry of SLS
(self leveling system) fluid, despite any indication of leakage in the form
of puddles or drips under hte car. The fluid is also not getting into the
crankcase (according to the oil dipstick). I was thinking that it might be
leaking while the engine is running, or maybe I hadn't added enough fluid
to begin with. To hopefully diagnose this problem, would it be OK to add
SLS fluid to the refill canister with the engine running, while checking
for leaks?

The total system capacity is only a couple liters, so it can
sneak into the crankcase and may not be notice. Also, because
it's much thinner, it will thin the crankcase oil and probably
cause an increase in oil being burned. A slow leak will be
especially sneaky.

Absolutely. Also note that the returning fluid. Unless the
system is pressurizing the shock/accumulators, there will be
fluid returning from the line connected to the tank cap where it
runs through the filter on it's way into the tank.

I had a hose develop a pin-hole leak in the high-pressure hose
crossing the engine. This made a mess, though, so I don't think
it's your problem.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Fuel Differences?

I get the best milage and least smoke from Shell or the local Co-op
fuel (the latter is B5 or B10, too). Other brands (Marathon,
Phillips) work fine but more smoke and about 1/2 mpg less on average.

There are significant differences in diesel fuel according to source,
and some burn better in a Benz that others. No American fuel is
really up to Benz standards, and some of it is real crap.

the body of the strut. Top hole in the boot is 14mm, the diameter of
the strut rod.

I hope Q will make note of the number and suggest the boots to those
who order 124 struts. Should extend the life of the strut.

Subject: [MBZ] 124 strut boot followup 2

Attached photo shows the bilstein boot on one of the struts from my
124. I'd say it is a good fit. Plenty of length. Bottom goes over
the body of the strut. Top hole in the boot is 14mm, the diameter of
the strut rod.

I hope Q will make note of the number and suggest the boots to those
who order 124 struts. Should extend the life of the strut.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Fuel Differences?

2011-11-07 Thread Randy Bennell
I can't say much about diesel but I do know that back a number of years,
some gasoline brands seemed to work better in my car.
I could run some but not others. If I bought Shell, for example, my car
would ping. if I bought Esso, it ran fine. (I am in Canada so the brands
might sound odd to you).

Might be a similar thing with diesel.

I just installed a new pad on my W116 on Sunday. I believe it has two
benefits, one it quiets the engine noise a bit, also it insulates the
paint from the heat of the engine (though in the summertime the heat of
the sun is probably just as intense, so I'm not really sure how big a
deal that is).

Re: [MBZ] Refilling SLS fluid - W123 300TD wagon

2011-11-07 Thread Dieselhead
In my 87 TD, the leak was in the low pressure hose. It should have
been replaced as part of Andrews rebuild/refurb of the system. When
the LP hose leaks, you don't notice it, except maybe some oil spots
on the pavement where you park, but by far most of it goes on the
road while driving. Amy wetness on the hose, and it should be
replaced.

You CAN use transmission cooler hose from FLAPS, or, of course Q has
the real thing.

  andrew strasfogel wrote:

I was chagrined when my recently refurbished 1985 300TD ran
dry of SLS (self leveling system) fluid, despite any
indication of leakage in the form of puddles or drips under
hte car. The fluid is also not getting into the crankcase
 (according to the oil dipstick).

The total system capacity is only a couple liters, so it can
sneak into the crankcase and may not be notice. Also, because
it's much thinner, it will thin the crankcase oil and probably
cause an increase in oil being burned. A slow leak will be
especially sneaky.

I was thinking that it might be leaking while the engine is
running, or maybe I hadn't added enough fluid to begin with.
To hopefully diagnose this problem, would it be OK to add SLS
fluid to the refill canister with the engine running, while
 checking for leaks?

2011-11-07 Thread Dieselhead
The number you want is Cetane. Of course, the regs are set up so
that no erl company has to tell you the actual cetane of the fuel you
are buying. So, of course, they won't tell you. There IS a very
wide variation in cetane.Oil companies are always on the look for
anything they can buy to raise cetane by blending. if my memory is
correct, it varies mostly between 30 and 45, with some as low as 25.

As the cetane varies, so does your MPG. As Peter said, some of it is
real C-rap. I got a load one time years ago, and I thought the
gauge busted. I really got in the neighborhood of 45 mpg on that
tank. It must have been a really high cetane fuel.

We can make synthetic Diesel from unused mineral deposits and it
comes in at around 60 cetane. It is better Diesel than dino Diesel.
AFIK, there are no plants in Norte Merica making such fuel. It is
being made in other parts of the world. We did the research and
found manufacturers capable of producing a system to do this on a
sustainable scale. In fact there has been a pilot scale plant in WA
that has been there for 30 years. We even tried to lease it and had
a refiner lined up to buy the output. The technology is over 60
years old, but there are a few tweaks since then.

I get the best milage and least smoke from Shell or the local Co-op
fuel (the latter is B5 or B10, too). Other brands (Marathon,
Phillips) work fine but more smoke and about 1/2 mpg less on average.

There are significant differences in diesel fuel according to
source, and some burn better in a Benz that others. No American
fuel is really up to Benz standards, and some of it is real crap.

Nothing free i know of, but there are several who are cheaper than
efax. I think efax is still the leader in the category. compared to
the cost of maintaining an analog phone line just for fax, efax looks
good. For those of us who no longer keep a land line for business,
efax or a similar system is the only way to go. Toll-free numbers
are through ring central, so there is no need for a land line.

The advertisement says it has a V6 engine; if they got that wrong, then perhaps
they have the year wrong as well? I'm thinking it really is a turbo, just a
sloppy ad.

Weren't all 1997 W210 diesels normally aspirated? Carfax shows the
VIN to indeed belong to a '97, and the picture of the trunk seems to
show a TURBODIESEL badge. Maybe the trunk got swapped or someone
put on the wrong badge for the heck of it? I'm tempted to go look.
Would a turbo OM606 be easy to tell from a non-turbo just by a quick
look, considering all the plastic crap on top of the the later
 engines?

The number you want is Cetane. Of course, the regs are set up so
that no erl company has to tell you the actual cetane of the fuel you
are buying. So, of course, they won't tell you. There IS a very
wide variation in cetane. Oil companies are always on the look for
anything they can buy to raise cetane by blending. if my memory is
correct, it varies mostly between 30 and 45, with some as low as 25.

Get 2 part plastic 5 minute epoxy.

Also get some 80 grit sandpaper and some saran wrap.

Sand the edges of the break to roughen them up, mix the epoxy, then spread
out over the break.

Use the saran wrap to press it into the break, and spread it out.

Once it starts to harden, peel the saran wrap off.

That's my technique for large shattered plastic parts.

about the steps and it came apart or something. Whatever. I got some super
glue that says it will do plastic, and some JBWeld that says it will do
plastic, but I was also thinking about some splints across the break, but it is
all curvy and not very splintable. But I don't want her spending another $400
or $500 or whatever on another of those things.

What say the shoegooers?

Many, many people think any six-cylinder engine is a V-6. (I can
understand them never having seen under the hood of a Mercedes or a

the '50s through the '80s, didn't they?)

Carfax says the VIN belongs to a '97, which just makes things
curiouser. I'm going right by the used car lot in the ad on another

There's a e320 with a straight V-6 advertised in my neck of the woods. First
time I saw that description. I guess the general populace has no idea what V means.

Anyone know anything about the current crop of new VW Diesels? Are the
engines/trannys any good? It looks like you can buy at least two if them
for less than a new E class CDI.

I didn't have good luck with epoxy when I glued my broken headlight
doors on the W116. So far one has broken again in the same places after
not much time.

I've now glued it with Shoe Goo and some thin aluminum strips (soda can
metal) as reinforcement over the cracks. Fortunately it's all out of
sight once installed. Hoping for better results, as the Shoe Goo
retains some flexibility once cured, whereas epoxy does not.

They make special UV resistant epoxy. It's mostly used in wood strip boat
construction where you want the wood to show. They do not, to my knowledge, make
UV resistant Goo or Goop.

Before I knew the difference, I built a wooden shelf for my sailboat and
finished it in clear epoxy. It turned yellow and peeled off in short order.
