Re: [MBZ] Ever have a driveshaft snap in half?

2013-12-17 Thread Ralph Robertson
This topic made me resurrect my vibration/wobble problem with my '87
300SDL. Ever since I bought this car, I have had this problem and 5 years
later I still have it. I have replaced everything I can think of in the
drive train and still have the shimmy. Although it seems a lot better than
original, and it should be! Is there anything in the diferential that
could cause this? Even had the rear half axles replaced. My latest
effort, the mechanic made some adjustments to the torgue for the rear axles
and suggested it may have a differential issue. Is there a possibility a
previous car accident may have caused this? I am rather frustrated at this
minor shimmy after putting all this money and effort into this, but it
still shakes the steering wheel at speeds above 55mph, very smooth below
this speed.
parts addressed; rear sway bar links., rear axles, drive shaft
balanced, all flex discs, s-support, rubber mounts, motor mounts, tires, wheel
balances, rear springs, transmission output shaft bearing.
The shake can be felt in the steering wheel, just like wheel balance.
Starts around 55mph, slakens off around 60, then comes back about 65 and
seems to come and go at all speeds above that. Was quite strong, but now a
minor shake but still aggravating on a long trip. Tires all seem to be
wearing evenly, no scalloping.
The car is in such great shape I hate to change it, and would rather fix it
than swap.

Re: [MBZ] Ever have a driveshaft snap in half?

2013-12-17 Thread Dan Penoff
Ralph,

It has been my experience that drivetrain vibration manifests itself by
vibration felt in the body, not steering.

Has your mechanic checked the front suspension closely for things like worn
control arm bushings, etc?

I would equate any shimmy or vibrations in the steering to front suspension or
steering geometry, not drive train issues.

SOLUTION: It should be illegal for Democrats to own guns.

_Exactly_! And to accomplish that, you can't have one either.
Or so seems the rationale. Some of the more rabid AGD's I've
spoken with seem to believe the mere presence of the things
will make them go on a rampage, and so they shouldn't even
exist. They don't trust themselves, and so don't trust you
by extension.

It's a bit OT, though. No amount of discussion, no matter
how rational, has ever seemed to change anyone's mind on this
point. A good home invasion seems to make Pro's, and a nice
juicy tragedy involving innocents makes Con's, and that's
about it.

As a kid I remember watching some bad movie out of Canada,
involving an entire night of terror with thugs trying to break
their way into a house. Even then I thought: just get out
the shotgun and end this problem. End of movie, thirty
seconds in.

Depends on how far back you go. Lincoln was their first serious candidate for
president. He wasn't an abolitionist, but his wife and the bulk of his
Republican supporters were.

Some other progressive ideas, like individual income tax, were proposed by the
likes of the Socialist Labor Party and the Populist Party in the 1800s, with the
Dems jumping on that bandwagon in 1894. It was a Republican President, William

income tax part of their 1908 election platform.

I've got to think the turning point was with FDR. That's when the Dems became
the party of 'vote for us and we'll use the federal treasury to buy you stuff'.

When somebody giving voice to them actually lands in office (Justin Amash), the

doing his latest check, he had the car rear wheels jacked up and then put
in gear and revved it up. The rear wheels could be seen moving slightly up
and down and then he made some adjustments to the axle torque which he said
would reduce the bounce. He also thought that this bounce could maybe be
felt in the steering wheel as well. I had told him the axles were replaced
and that is when he mentioned a differntial issue that would cause the
axles to bounce slightly. Is this possible?
I will explore further the front end issues mentioned below.

Could be a loose wheel bearing, steering component, or front suspension
component. But first, swap the front and rear wheels and see what happens.

Any driveline issues should be felt throughout the car if felt through the
steering wheel. If your shift bushings are snug, you should be able to feel them
better through the shifter than through the steering.

If your wheels are out of balance or out of round, it could explain the steering
vibration and the rear wheel shake.
You could always try switching wheels between the car that vibrates and the one
that doesn't.

these perfectly balanced tires will still give you vibes.
(i once bought 5 wheels and tires off of a friends new J**p just to
get the wheels, only to find that only 2 of the brand-new original
low-end Goodyears on them were round and true; there was no way to put
any 4 of those on the ground without getting shimmy, shakes and/or vibes.)

what kind of tires did you have on there when this was first
noticed? and what kind of tires do you have on there now?

sounds like you already know you have at least one tire (on the
rear) that's out of round; i'd suspect that since you feel the vibes in
the steering wheel you also have one (or more) that's out of round
and/or out of true on the front.
get them up in the air and watch both the tires and the wheels
while they spin to see i they even spin roundly and without any
side-to-side wiggling.

cheers!

According to their rating, I am a dinosaur. I scored a 4.
I don't have a tatoo. I read the newspaper etc.

It reminds me of a similar thing a few years back relating to vehicles.
I was driving a Toyota 4Runner at the time and the test told me I was

I thought that a bit odd.

You can check to see if the relay is working, just put a meter on a glow
plug and see if it is being energized (or voltized I guess). But yeah,
you might want to think about glow plugs too. And the fuse CHECK YOUR

I saw that but it still doesn't mean anything to me.

Meanwhile you almost killed my buzz for getting my mini-split system
running in the addition. I now have heat! I have had it all installed
save for connecting the lines and charging the system, and was waiting
to get my new power lines run, but then I got thinking I could take
power off my temp pole box and run it to the system. The box is like
those at RV camps apparently, 2-20A plugs and a 60A 220V plug. I bought
a plug, had some heavy wire, bought a breaker box and put in a 30A
breaker off that 60A line, then ran some line to the shutoff at the
outdoor unit, disconnecting the wire from my new panel. It is kind of a
bodge, but the inspector was by the other day and said it was OK for
some temp temps. I had an HVAC guy come by to get it going (so I can
get the warranty on the units), and now I have heat!!! No more propane
heater to get it warmed up on cold mornings. I am so excited!

LG 36k BTU mini-split heat pump with 4 head units (2-12k, 2-9k), I can
barely tell the outdoor unit is running, the indoor units are mostly
silent even at high fan speed. Awesome system.

[MBZ] Holiday Story

2013-12-17 Thread Scott Ritchey
With the holidays upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with
my family friends about drinking and driving. As you may know some of us
have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on
the way home after a social session out with friends.

Well, three days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several
cocktails, followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly, I still
had the sense to know that I may be over the limit. That's when I did
something that I've never done before .. I took a cab home!

Sure enough on the way home, there was a police road block but since it was
a cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. This was
a real relief and surprise because I had never driven a cab before. I don't
even know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to
do with it!!!

The cheapest entry into this ownership is in the $5,000 dollar range.. the

about $6,000 a minute to shoot, just for the ammo.

It's not for the Faint of Wallet but it is one heck of a lot of fun. As

demonstrating you are responsible member of society however.

Re: [MBZ] Ever have a driveshaft snap in half?

2013-12-17 Thread Curt Raymond
I can tell you from experience that loosing even 15# of air at 85MPH is pretty
dammed exciting.

Central and northern Maine are pretty barren and one time heading north in my
Dakota I'm flying along in convoy with some other cars when the passenger rear
tire decides to lose some air. The steering got vry sensitive all of a
sudden. I came off throttle and coasted down to maybe 40 before I thought I was
really in full control. Grabbed an offramp to a rest area and hit the restroom.
By the time I got back the tire was noticeably sagging. Changed it and realized
that a spare which has been on the truck for 4 years will be banana shaped. It
took several miles at 20mph before the back of the truck stopped wagging... A
tire shop a couple more miles down the highway pulled a big screw out of the
bad tire before patching it.

Dragonman was the guy at the top of the hill on Hwy94 east of CSpgs,
just east of the landfill and pick n pull. He did this type of gun
thing from time to time. He would drive a rat patrol jeep after a car
that was rigged to motor in a tight circle. The objective was to
chase and shoot the car until it was killed/stopped. Dragonman had a
front page writeup in WSJ in early '90's - interesting guy from NYC
that moved to CSpgs. FBI would consult him. He died several years
ago. He had a large gun shop out there in the moose pasture east of
town. We were further east and then south at Drennan. Best water in

Craig - when you lived out there by Peyton, did you know Dragonman?
Best water in
the world was from 100 ft deep well in Black Squirrel alluvium.

Re: [MBZ] Tire blowouts

2013-12-17 Thread Curt Raymond
Couple miles down the road from work. Had dinner with the big boss who is over
here from the UK and I was going back and forth about trying to head home (its
56 miles) and he pointed out that the company would pay for it since I have a
class in which makes me essential staff. So I figured discretion was the
better part of valor and all that...

I think the problem with the Jetta is just that theres so much torque on tap.
The tires on it are decent although lower end all seasons. I drove the car
yesterday and it was okay on the snowy side streets but not terrific. The 190D
has snows on the rear (which I should fix this week) and handles much better
although it needs some weight too.

Well I don't know about the Jetta but I do think Mercedes weight   its
distribution make a difference.  My 3 123's 124 have all done well in
snow regardless of tires. Where are you holed up in a motel?

Out west, it is hard not to be of that ilk. But rather than geology,
the issue was water and water rights. It was shown that water was a
better investment than gold. The biz that paid bills when I was
employed intended to use water that had already been used once, use it
again as a resource to irrigate land and crops. Waste is a resource
out of place.

[MBZ] food f-word

2013-12-17 Thread Mountain Man
We bought caraway seed for bread. That is what the catalog said it
was, but when we opened the package, it was black caraway seed, aka
nigella sativa, or black seed. I guess Mohammad said black seed will
cure anything but death. Very interesting.

Does anyone know about this weird seed?
Thanks.

Actually thinking about it, you have lot have gun restrictions, far as
I know you can't own a full auto rifle there.

Not in Washington. Ten miles away, in Idaho, you can.
However, a cannon is legal in WA, but not ID. Go figure.

It's the black seed seen often on artisan bread. Not caraway,
probably has a nutty taste if I remember correctly.

It's edible.

This just so Hendrik can enjoy what another group I belong to does about 4
times a year.

Every weapon you see in the video is FULL AUTO and FULLY LICENSED to
private citizens.

The cheapest entry into this ownership is in the $5,000 dollar range.. the
price only goes up from there. There are a couple of quad 50's that cost
about $6,000 a minute to shoot, just for the ammo.

It's not for the Faint of Wallet but it is one heck of a lot of fun. As
you will see demonstrated, ownership of fully automatic weapons is
perfectly legal in USA. It is carefully controlled, expensive, and requires
demonstrating you are responsible member of society however.

Grant...

I had a chance to put a full belt through a WW I water cooled BAR a
few years ago, courtesy of Brownells. The belt cost $70. It was a
blast. Those mormons figured out how to off people efficiently.

That wasn't a BAR--it's air-cooled and feeds from a box magazine. Maybe a
Browning M1917?
