I managed to shame the Sears guy into replacing one of my (very nice)
ignition wrenches that I broke. He said they didn't have one, but I pointed
out a set which included the same wrench. He said he couldn't break up a
set, but I pointed out that the broken wrench broke up MY set. I was
prepared to continue in that vein long enough to cost them more in lost
sales than honoring their guarantee would.

This was a while back, and I no longer think of Craftsman tools as pretty
decent for the money; so seldom shop there.

[MBZ] Somewhat OT:crockauto

2015-08-29 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

I''m looking at parts at crockauto for a Dodge.

Choices are:
WJB $57
Dura International $69
Mevotech$72

I've never heard of these brands, but I think Dura is a OEM for some things.
These brands I've heard of with timken being the most trustworthy (IMHO)

Raybestos $85
Timken $92

Then there are some other brands for more money, but not for my money...

What is the collective wisdom? The Dura and WJB are the best
sellers. What would y'all buy?

I'd like these to last another 200k, but the Dodge parts only lasted
60k or so, but death was accelerated by the accelerometer turning on
the anti skid at highway speeds for no reason. This caused
overheating, and probably burned the grease, leading to bearing
failure. Accelerometer is now disconnected.

Is WJB the equivalent of Uro?

Of course, I have no way of knowing if timken are make in China.

For comparison: Last Dodge ones were about $100 ea. Today's dodge
price was $220 each. (different dealer, no discount) I think I got
30% off on the first ones.

I am leaning toward one of the two most popular: Duro or WJB.

Thanks

Speaking of fuel lines, I changed the fuel filter on my W220 today.

That in and of itself wasn't a big deal, but it was the first time I
had worked with the "Clik-r" style hose clamps.

http://kgs-ind.com/products/other/clic-r/

They're all over the car, and in anticipation of working with them,
I bought one of the special pliers that are used to release and
secure them.

While it took me a few minutes to figure out exactly how to release
them, once I got it the rest were easy. They were just as simple to
secure when I was done, too. All in all it took maybe 10 minutes
total to swap my fuel filter, if that.

Dan

POS! I'll take it off your hands if ya pay me $500.

SO how much did these special pliers cost?

Are they at FLAPS, or stealer, or?

Looks like a removable pex clamp.

Some of the pex clamps can be clamped with a end nipper.

Now that sounds like a deal! I don't know when we will be rolling
through. We moved to the house we are now renting south-southeast of
Santa Fe because the landlord was going to build a large garage in which
we could unload our furniture van, repack boxes of poorly- or
not-at-all-packed stuff, and then reload it.

Now that the construction was to have already commenced, we find out that
the contractor (part of a nation-wide company) the landlord is using is
hemming and hawing about when he will get started, which looks like no
time soon. In addition, another couple in the area have sold their home
and would like to move in here. Our landlord would like to rent to them
and wants us out of the house by the end of September. I could put up a
fuss, but it really is in our best interest, now that I have completed my
classes in Albuquerque, to find a suitable place as soon as possible so we
can start the process of unloading, repacking, and reloading our
furniture van without delay.

So, I am looking for yet another place to rent temporarily.

> Have you replaced the 124 yet?

No, I think we will wait on that until we are in Indiana.

[MBZ] Perfect Battery

2015-08-29 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

‘Almost perfect’ battery from MIT will last longer, won’t degrade - and never
blow up in your face

© Yan Wang / Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Material scientists have developed a solid-state electrolyte, which can greatly
boost modern battery technology. It would allow batteries to endure hundreds of
thousands of recharges, pack more juice and be safe from combustion.

Electrolyte is one of key components of a battery, transporting charged ions
from one electrode to another during charging and discharging. Modern
lithium-ion batteries use liquid electrolyte, but a group of scientists claim
to have developed a better all-round solid-state electrolyte. The research was
published in Nature Materials in a paper by MIT postdoc Yan Wang, visiting
professor Gerbrand Ceder, and five others.

Their invention belongs to a class of materials known as superionic lithium-ion
conductors, which are compounds of lithium, germanium, phosphorus and sulfur.
Their working solution leads to an “almost a perfect battery” that would be a
game changer, according to Ceder.

The electrolyte can withstand hundreds of thousands of recharge cycles, meaning
a battery made with it would last practically forever. It has superior energy
density, packing 20 to 30 percent more energy for a given volume. It is also
more stable than a liquid electrolyte, meaning the rare but widely publicized
cases of battery combustion like the one that grounded the entire fleet of
Boeing Dreamliners would no longer be possible.

An added benefit is that it works at temperatures colder than minus 30 degrees
Celsius, unlike the common lithium-ion batteries that require preheating.

The team says the principles derived from their research could lead to even
more effective materials.

The research was conducted in collaboration with the Korean consumer electronic
producer Samsung through its Advanced Institute of Technology in Cambridge,
Massachusetts.

Re: [MBZ] OT: C-47 glider towing

2015-08-29 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Good one. I'd read about the development of this procedure before, but
hadn't seen a movie of it in action.

It makes me think that is we did this today, a glider club could launch
sailplanes twice as fast as they do with the tow plane landing after each
tow - they could just circle around, constantly pulling gliders into the
air - too cool. My 182 used to have a glider tow hook, might have to find
another one . . .

In a rear drive car, not a prob, but I have no idea about labor cost

for this.

Curt, what was the labor for your VW? That may be similar or less.

[MBZ] Eenie, Meenie, Mynee, Moe

2015-08-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
I am tired of screwing around with the 300D racing mess (LeMons) and will be
parting it prior to the crusher.

With that gone, I feel a void in my parking lot and think I can replace it with
another Silver Star. But which? This is the current crop of contenders

Now, recall that I have to get it on the track for under $500. That means
whatever I part from it can pay for repairs, but I have to come as close to
$500 in the wash. Not sure what all parts become spare on each. Not too into
rust repair anymore, either.

[MBZ] MANN AT Filter in 124 was: 300TD woes.

2015-08-29 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I've used the elring AT filters successfully in 123 and 126, but
apparently something is different in the 124 trans. The Mercedes
Benz auto trans expert (Guru) recommends MANN ONLY in the 124.

Once you have been stranded by a collapsed elring, and find out that
the solution is as cheap as a MANN filter, you will always buy MANN
for your 124.

I was sure I was going to have to buy another transmission. It was
well worth the call to Sun Valley to talk to theGuru. (sorry I don't
remember his name, but he is kind enough to talk to us on the phone)

I plan on using the Mann AT filters in all the 123, 124 and 126, and
107 from here on out.

If you have a 124: Take heed.

if you don't take this advice, then read OK Don's signature from Will
Rogers, and go pee on the fence.

It is your choice.

Absolutely!

Call Eddie or Tom on Monday and they’ll have some options for you.
