Re: [MBZ] OT - Who Has Direct HVAC Experience?

2019-12-17 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
Thanks, I already looked them up.

And yes, I reinstalled the old thermostat and I get the same results. No
cooling, air handler runs and the outdoor unit sounds like it's running, too,
at least the fan is.

Maybe my compressor contactor decided to take a dump? Or the capacitor?

Meh. At this point I’m done, the guy comes at noon tomorrow. I’ll live,

Yeah, I know. I think some guy in Topeka or somewhere in Kansas owns it. I
check in on it occasionally.

Since Dad was a full IFR rated instructor I usually got to fly left seat. I
logged close to 400 hours in that airframe.

Re: [MBZ] TV's

2019-12-17 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
As long as you stick to a name brand you should be fine. You really don’t have
to worry about the “smart” aspect of these as long as you don’t connect them to
a network. I connect mine once every few months, jump into the menu to run
updates, and pull the (network) plug as soon as it’s done.

I think the big thing these days is LED vs. OLED(?) I know one of them is
significantly more expensive but the picture quality is noticeably better.

My Dad was a “shared owner” with two doctors. Total assh*ts, both of them.

The FBO handled scheduling as it did for other owner groups. I can recall on
more than one occasion where we packed up for a weekend away at our place on

After a several instances of this and indifference from the other owners, he

[MBZ] OT - Who Has Direct HVAC Experience?

2019-12-17 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
New house.

“Goodman” single stage heat pump system with 10kW backup heat strips, very
generic Emerson brand thermostat. All perfectly functional until today...

I swapped my 1st generation Nest thermostat over from my old house. Same type
of system, only it’s a Trane.

Got everything wired as described, diagnostics on the Nest say all is good, I
get no cold air. Compressor sounds like it’s running. Return line is not warm.

I spent 90 minutes on an online chat with a Nest person who was clearly *not* a
first language English speaker. I’ll never get that time back...

I’m looking for ideas. Got my HVAC guy coming tomorrow at noon, but I sure
would like to be able to sort this myself.

Thanks,

It would and we know it. However, the market is such that the margin of cash
flow to costs would be minimal at best, plus I don’t want to be a landlord. And
the minute I start paying someone to manage it I would be upside down on cash
flow.

We’ve got plenty of equity and the market is good. We’re going to take the
money and plow it into the new house.

Spot on as far as Panama and diversity. If you don’t understand or know the
history it will mess with your mind. Why? Go into a very authentic Chinese
restaurant in Panama City and the employees all speak very fluent Spanish.
“What is wrong with this picture?” your brain will say.

With alcohol being banned by many of the indigenous towns there’s a thriving
business in smuggling. I once saw a bottle of Jack Daniels black change hands
for over $100, and this was 20 years ago.

They got to great lengths to stop the trafficking but the stuff still gets
through. Much like the Indian reservations of the lower 48, drug and alcohol
addiction are rampant. If we didn’t kill the indigenous people with weapons or
smallpox, we let alcohol do it...

Not Tampa. The story is focused primarily on two counties away.

Re: [MBZ] OT more boars 🐗

2019-12-13 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
I started out with Ruger revolvers when I bought a Super Single Six .22
revolver a few years ago on a whim. Fun to shoot, cheap to use, dead nuts
accurate for a pistol.

After some outings to the range with it, I decided I wanted a larger caliber
single action pistol, but I really didn’t want a .44 or larger hand cannon as
most of the Ruger models are.

With this in mind, I kept an eye out for a .357 version, a less common model. I
found a really nice one in a Gunbroker.com auction that had been languishing. I
tossed what I thought was a silly bid on it and moved on. Amazingly, I got an
email a few days later stating that I had won the auction.

Being a .357 magnum, it also shoots .38 special as well, which is what I
typically shoot in it. I do so because it lets me shoot more rounds without
fatigue that if I shot .357. I also like to mix rounds as well, just for fun.
It’s a stainless steel model with a 6.5” barrel. I added a set of rosewood
grips from Altamont and it looks absolutely stunning with them.

Loads of fun to shoot and highly accurate. A great single action pistol.

Re: [MBZ] Getting on a cruise

2019-12-09 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
Visiting any of the Lesser Antilles or other islands in the Caribbean is always
a good time as long as you’re not one of the “ugly American” touristas. They’re
each culturally diverse as well as different in climate and topography, so it’s
like visiting a totally different country each time in most cases.

When I was a youngster my folks participated in “CAT” tours with their flying
buddies. These were groups of aircraft owners who would fly together as a group
to various locations. I’ve Island hopped from Hispañola all the way down to the
ABCs (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) in a Beechcraft V35.

We typically spent a day or two on each island, sometimes more, before moving
on to the next. Loads of fun and an awesome experience.

Re: [MBZ] Harbor Freight and Lowes

2019-11-18 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I have purchased one HF ratchet, a stubby 3/8” drive that was one of their
“high end” or more expensive models. It lasted maybe six months, used possibly
10-12 times, none of which stressed it significantly, it was used to spin off
fasteners in areas with limited space, like the top bolt on motor mounts, after
they had been broken loose.

The reverse lever has failed in that it doesn’t select the direction, you have
to fiddle with it and maybe it will do the job, and the ratcheting action is
sloppy as heck. No doubt internal failures, but I’m not buying another.

Absolutely. However, we knew we probably wouldn’t be in the home long enough to

Looks like a ground source heat pump is the way to go. Unfortunately, they
don’t show the acquisition cost, which would balance it out a bit in comparison.

My former HVAC guy in Indiana swore by them. The heating and cooling costs for
my behemoth (4,000+ sf) house there would have been about (aboot?) $100/month
year round. Unfortunately, the acquisition cost for the retrofit would have

Re: [MBZ] NAV system DVD

2019-11-15 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
It should only come up if you choose the NAV function as far as I know.

As I mentioned previously, the lack of updates renders it pretty useless, more
of a novelty than anything else. There a major freeway that didn’t exist some
years back that I now use for my commute. When I drove it in the 2003 S430 I
would be driving across open land and an interstate. It would get upset about
this then just give up and be quiet, as I recall. I found it entertaining.

Probably not, and they’re not cheap to come by, even in the secondary market.

Not to mention I think this model’s NAV software hasn’t been updated in some
years, so you could be driving where it doesn’t show any roads. My former S430
did that because the NAV data was so out of date.

Re: [MBZ] Partially restored 1962 220SE coupe on BAT

2019-11-15 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Actually, restoring the dash wood isn’t bad, it’s just darned time consuming
and very tedious to get it right. Replating chrome is very expensive these
days. For example, the little garnish molding on the rear doors of the W110
sedan that’s a continuation of the molding on top of the fins cost over
$100/each.

Having watched the coupe market closely, I’m convinced there’s nothing below
$20k that wouldn’t require major restoration or repairs. Better to pay the
money up front and buy the very best one can afford.

Re: [MBZ] OT phone/internet and WSJ bills

2019-11-13 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Given the choice I would have no TV, but that’s not my call. I was surprised I
could convince the spouse to cut the cord - Spectrum’s sudden price hike when
we went off contract did the push for me. She’s happy as heck with what she has
to watch now and even finds it easier to use than the cable box, which is icing
on the cake. As long as she can watch what I refer to as her “murder porn”
(like Discovery Investigation stuff) all is good.

No cloud storage for me, thank you, I want to control and own my data. I use my
own router with my own custom firewall rules and proxy to keep things out and
in based on my rules. I have a FreeNAS server that has over 10TB of RAID based
storage, so we’re good there.

Re: [MBZ] OT phone/internet and WSJ bills

2019-11-13 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Cut the cord on cable last month. Went from $220/month for phone/cable/Internet
(undiscounted costs as we just went out of contract) down to a little over
$100/month for nearly the same content, and no more land line.

$60/month Internet (100/100)
$50/month YouTube TV
$5/month Tablo DVR

This gives us a boatload of content through YouTube TV, over the air broadcasts
with DVR functionality with the Tablo (also a feature of YTTV), and through
various free applications like Pluto TV (400+ free channels).

There’s minimal competition in this market, so if you want to pull the plug on
your provider they just shrug their shoulders and tell you “Bye!” No effort for
retention.

Along with using Spectrum (Charter) for cable, we also moved from Verizon
($200/month for 4 lines) to Spectrum ($56/month for 4 lines) for our cellular
service. Spectrum piggybacks on Verizon, so coverage is the same.

Re: [MBZ] List Mom

2019-11-12 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I agree that it’s not political for the most part, but bringing a former
politician who has a very clearly and hotly contested agenda will cause the
exchanges to devolve into unpleasant rhetoric between the various parties.

It’s not germane to the topics here, and you’re making assumptions for others
that you have no right to do so. I’m being preemptive. Don’t like it? You’re
welcome to take over the responsibilities of running the list.

Being raised in a GM family, I always looked down my nose at anything AMC until
my best friend’s folks bought a Gremlin that had (I think) a 302 V8 in it.

Holy mother of pearl would that thing go!

Totally reshaped my opinion of AMC products at the time.

2019-11-05 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
The firewall on my router won’t let it send anything out without my approval. I
check the manufacturer’s web site to see if there are firmware updates, and
when there are I let it download them or I pull them down and side load them
with a USB stick.

If I don’t want something to phone home, it’s blocked at the edge of my
environment.

Whatever it is mine was around $700-$800, so I guess it was a QLED and not the
better OLED.

A lot of the newer TVs have apps built in to use services like Netflix, but
again, the apps that were on my LG sucked and were very kludgy to use. I’m
pretty sure you’re locked into their environment, so you can’t download other
apps unless they’re done by the manufacturer.

I bought a 65” OLED LG a few months ago to replace a 60” LG plasma TV that was
seven years old and starting to show artifacts. I’m happy with it for the most
part. It’s a “smart” TV but I don’t connect it to my network but maybe every 60
days or so to get any updates that might be available.

Last time I connected it I tried messing with the built in applications for
things like Netflix and was sorely disappointed, so I don’t feel like I’m
missing anything. And I’m not giving LG my personal information, either.

I have used one and it was slick as snot, if you’ll pardon the analogy.

There was a place in the UK that was selling them for a pretty reasonable
amount, like $200-ish or so, I think.

2019-10-31 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Nope. If you closely, you can see the conduit (gray) run across the deck as
well.

Note that it’s spaced pretty evenly in one direction, but the ones that cross
at 90 degrees are grouped closely together.

It’s a mystery to us...

Nope. If you look closely, it’s not a loop or interconnected. The tubing is
laid out in straight lines and in a grid arrangement, but it just ends up at
the edge of the slab.

No need for floor heating in Florida. And the deck you see in the picture is

I am not a brand snob by any sense. I’ve owned several Asian cars (Nissan,
Mazda) and been quite pleased with them and would not hesitate to buy another
should the need for a basic, “gas and go” reliable low maintenance surface.

Our 2005 Mazda 6 went 160k in around 10 years time. Other than a couple of COPs
and normal maintenance I never had to do a thing to that car. The wife drive
it, so it got thrashed severely, too.

2001 Altima was bought new and lasted until 2010 with around 120k on the clock.
Grandpa in a little truck T-boned it and it got totaled out. Other than
maintenance I never had to repair a thing on it that I recall.

I would buy another current model of either without a second thought.

2019-10-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
And here is an example of inappropriate control in an HOA.

Our design criteria is clearly defined as far as materials and construction,
much of which is dictated by County ordinance, not HOA bylaws. The president
doesn’t have a say in things like this, they’re addressed by the ACC
(architectural control committee) who approves or denies applications for such
things solely on compliance with community standards and nothing else. Our
president may not like something, but that’s their tough beans as they have no
say in matters as an individual Board member.

That being said, since your patio/deck cover is in the rear of the home and not
visible from the street, we wouldn’t much care what/how you did it as long as
it was in compliance with County codes, which is between you and the County.

This is an example where a properly run HOA doesn’t get intrusive.

Re: [MBZ] I Am Living Right

2019-10-21 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
While I think that some of you are grossly exaggerating the effect of an HOA, I
fully understand the desire to have no restrictions on the use of your
property. In my case I prefer to know that my property value will be protected
if not enhanced by the presence of an HOA, and in order to achieve this I’ll
gladly comply with community standards in place for my community.

And it’s also clear that there is a misunderstanding of how HOAs work. As an
FYI, rules or standards can’t be established arbitrarily, they have to be voted
on and approved by 2/3 of the ownership in my community. With over 250
properties, it’s a struggle to get 50% to respond to a proxy mailing much less
get a majority. They also can’t conflict with laws covering ownership or Fair
Housing laws, too. In other words, Jim’s paranoia about defining who can live
in the house is simply misguided and wrong.

In my community the “rules” as it were pertain mainly to things like house
paint and roofing colors, landscaping and some basic land use. The County has
ordinances covering things like occupancy and use, that's well beyond an HOA’s
responsibilities.

Again, to each his or her own. I have chosen to live in a suburban community
that has standards in place to maintain and enhance property value, as that’s
important to me.

Re: [MBZ] I Am Living Right

2019-10-21 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I’m not going to get into the discussion over HOAs versus no restrictions, but
this is a point well taken and one side of the HOA/deed restrictions discussion
that rarely comes to light.

An HOA doesn’t “tell you how to live (right)”. Bylaws and covenants outline
community standards that have to be met or exceeded. Most are pretty simple,
but I do believe that for many who opt into a deed restricted community do so
for the reason above - they’ve made a substantial investment in their home and
want to do whatever possible to protect the value of their investment. I can
assure you that property values for comparable homes that I see are noticeably
higher for the property that’s in a deed restricted community. There’s a reason
for this.

Whether you live in a deed restricted community or not, you are probably not
aware that your municipality has ordinances in place that serve much the same
purpose, for example, the inability to render animals or make soap. I’ve seen
these very restrictions in place on several properties we’ve owned over the
years that were not in deed restricted communities. Sure, you’re not going to
pull the “Granny from Beverly Hillbillies” stuff around your cement pond, but
who’s to say your neighbor won’t decide to do so?

My point is that HOAs or deed restrictions are not nearly as onerous as most
people make them out to be, that’s all.

Re: [MBZ] OT: USA's largest and very old storage battery

2019-10-21 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
None of this technology is outdated and much of it is still in use.

Nickel-cadmium battery banks are still in use in the communications and standby
power industries.

Motor generators, also known as “MG sets” are still in service for mainframe
computers. In fact, IBM was one of the largest users of MG sets for decades.
They consisted of a large electric motor, a flywheel, and a generator all
coupled together. The motor and generator faced each other with the flywheel on
the connecting shaft in between. The main reason these have been in use for
such a long time is that they also provided power conversion, that is, the
generator was a 400 Hz generator, so the unit as a whole not only provided
standby power (known as “ride through”) for the few seconds it took to bring a
generator or UPS online, but it also provided frequency conversion for the
computer power supplies.

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-16 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Dad had a few stories about stuff that happened in GM plants, but it wasn’t
first hand so it’s tough to know if it was true or just anecdotal.

I once worked with an older guy in the 80s who worked on the line at Studebaker
before they shut down. He told stories of how after it was announced that they
were closing there were guys on the line who were taking dumps in the doors
before they finished them.

[MBZ] Fun With the W211

2019-10-14 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Pulled the W211 CDI into the garage yesterday to inspect the two bubbly
injectors and possibly replace glow plugs.

Couldn’t get the injector out, so I installed a new hold down stretch bolt and
moved on. Injector slide hammer tool is on the way from the Island of Large
Wimmen for later in the week.

Glow plugs were questionable as was the glow plug controller. Rather than take
any chances, I got a complete set of new Beru glow plugs and have had the son
fill their recesses with Kroil every day when he gets home from school.

This approach yielded excellent results, as the old glow plugs came out with
little to no effort. Nice! New ones went in with antiseize on the threads and
were torqued to spec.

Glow plug controller is toast. Mercedes has sold a reman for about $240 my
cost, but there weren’t any in Paragon but some at other dealers. Rather than
have my parts guy call around and haggle with other dealers, I found the new
OEM (Beru) part online for around $214.00, so I went with that. Should be here
in a day or two.

Son says glow plug is leaking worse now, but not bad, maybe a few drops of
stuff coming out. I didn’t wail on the hold down bolt as I didn’t have a torque
wrench that would measure that low (7 nm) so I sort of swagged it. Got an
adapter for my little beam wrench coming, too.

I’m going to have him park the car when he comes home tonight and drive my car
until we have everything on hand to effect the repairs.

This car has been a bit of PITA since bringing it home, but the stuff it needs
isn’t a big deal. Son says his first tank of fuel was averaged over 40 mpg for
mixed city/highway. Not bad.

I would add that Mike will work with you as far as time and price. Depending on

Roger,

Astral Gray was a primary body color for Mercedes in the 70s. While it might
have been the same color as the wheels, Würth refers to it a “silver wheel

Re: [MBZ] 240D Question: Dangerous?

2019-10-07 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
My former message was a bit cryptic as I was trying to compose it quickly at a
red light...

As others have stated, while the performance or lack thereof of this
configuration of the 240D is minimal, driving one configured this way merely
requires the driver to become more tactical in their driving habits. Risk
taking is minimal, as your resources for making changes on short notice are
limited, to say the least.

I believe you can swap the snubbers by just removing the nut on the top of the
strut and carefully lowering the control arm enough to get the rod from the
strut out of the mount.

I’ve done it on an R129, which has slightly different suspension.

Re: [MBZ] update on "Bob Dole" the 123

2019-10-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Best way to adjust the Bowden cable is to remove the cap from the ball, pull on
the cable until you feel resistance, and see if the cap on the cable lines up
over the ball on the linkage. If it doesn’t, carefully turn the threaded
adjusting but on the cable jacket end to move the cable so it lines up over the
ball.

In other words, with the slack taken out of the cable, the cap on the end of
the cable should fit directly over the ball without moving the cable.

Be careful turning the adjusting nut, as they can often stick or bind due to
dirt and aging of the plastic. You see a lot of them broken these days, either
from age or mishandling. If it’s broken, the only fix is replacement of the
cable, not a fun job.

High mileage badges come from MBUSA, not the MBCA.

Get the form off their web site, take the car and form to a dealer to get their
verification stamp, and send in the form. Six weeks later you’ll get a badge

That’s how I was describing the difference between the M119 and M120 to the
eldest boy the other day. I was telling him about that really nice S600 that’s
for sale nearby, and he was wondering why it would be any better than an S500

We were on the interstate at the time, and I asked him if he remembers the get

 “Yup.”

“OK, so we're going 70 mph. Think about that sort of performance when you put

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum lines

2019-10-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Donald,

Some suggestions:

1.) Stop. Take a few steps back and stop trying to solve the car’s (perceived)
issues collectively. Taking a shotgun approach to a car that is new and unknown
to you is rarely productive.

2.) Try to make a list of the issues. Pick one and resolve it, then move to the
next one on the list. If you run into a wall with something, move on to the
next and circle back when others are resolved.

3.) Assume that everything is messed up. Take whatever the PO told you and
forget it, as it will color your opinions regarding what is or isn’t wrong.
Start clean with every issue and make no assumptions until you know they’re
fact. My rule is to ignore everything the PO said and start from scratch.
Rarely will you find someone as knowledgeable as yourself or this group,
meaning that what you’re being told by the PO is probably wrong.

Observations on my part based on things you’ve said of late:

Clean out the boost line from the back of the intake manifold to the vacuum
control valve on the firewall and to the IP. I’m betting your lack of power is
the classic “no boost” scenario due to a clogged boost line.

Find a diagram for the switchover valves and get that sorted. Plug the EGR line
with a BB or golf tee. Replace the worn out switchover valve levers that I’m
betting are worn away to nothing. They’re pocket change from the dealer.

Forget everything the PO told you about the ACC. Check the blower fuse first.
It’s undersized and prone to fail. Mercedes has a retrofit kit to relocate the
fuse out of the fuse box and use a strip fuse of a higher amperage. I can get
the number if you can’t find it in the archives - I’ve posted it here a couple
of times, cost is around $20 from the dealer.

With the fuse sorted, check the system for operation. Some good suggestions on
the blower motor in the event it needs brushes. The ACC controller rarely
fails, ignore it for now. Your push button unit may need to be resoldered, if
you’re handy with a soldering iron it’s an easy fix.

Back to vacuum...

There is a rather lengthy dissertation I wrote for Richarde’s mbz.org on
adjusting and troubleshooting the vacuum system with the IP and transmission,
I.e., modulator adjustment. If you can’t find it I’ll dig up a copy.

Small steps, man. It’s like eating an elephant - lots and lots of small bites.

Good point. If it’s an 82 it probably doesn’t have the relocated and larger
strip fuse for the blower motor. The original fuse may have melted down.

This is a great video about the issue. It appears to be quite common on a
number of common rail injection engines of this vintage, not just Mercedes.

And yes, Craig, the injectors are electronic piezo type.

Re: [MBZ] New E320 CDI Fun - NOT

2019-09-30 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
That is correct, more so that I replace the seals on the injectors, the
injectors themselves aren’t leaking - it’s the seal between the injector nozzle
and the head, a copper washer. Parts to do the whole set are like $18.00 from
the dealer, and it’s common enough that my dealer stocks them.

The success of the job really revolves around being surgically clean,
especially for the hold down bolt. The bolt gets replaced as it’s a stretch
bolt, but if there is any crud in the bolt bore it can cause the bolt to break
upon tightening or punch through the bottom of the bore into the water jacket
should there be solids or liquids presentbefore the bolt is threaded in.

Not sure.

However, it does show there’s some leakage past the sealing ring of the
injector, which is the symptom that snowballs into the “Black Death” scenario.

I’m going out of town later in the week, so I’m not sure if I want to take this
on before I leave or wait until the next weekend to address it. We’ll
definitely keep close tabs on things, that’s for sure.

Hmm.
