Well, not totally true. Diesel exhaust might kill you but it will take
some time. Those particles are not so good for the lungs over the long haul.

Randy

B Wrong! The base assumption here is that carbon monoxide
(CO) from the exhaust is making you sleepy. The car is a 300SD.
That means it is a Diesel. Diesel exhaust will not kill you or your
canary. Diesel exhaust has negligible CO content. Diesel exhaust
WILL NOT make you sleepy. Lack of CO is one of the inherent
advantages of Diesel engines.

While a hole in the muffler might make annoying noise, it won't hurt
you or your family.

... which Manfred tells me is due to a 3/4 -1' hole in the muffler of my
1981 300SD. He is helping me with the car, and a muffler [without the

is needed. Manfred can weld it in place, so just 5-6 of pipe is needed on
the muffler. Anyone got one at a reasonable price that will fit on the

Update on the computer: matching 2GB chips from Crucial seem to help a bit;
any additional memory tests as bad. I still have some delay problems, and
turning off some of the functions of the dictation program has also helped.

[MBZ] compression testing

2011-03-04 Thread R A Bennell
The thread on the tick suggested compression testing and that got me to
wondering about doing one.

Anyone have good advice on testing an old 300D 115 normally aspirated
engine?

Am I correct that one must remove the injectors and use those holes for
the tester?

What happens with the diesel fuel that should then be shooting out all
over at high pressure when one is testing? How does one stop that?

I bought a compression tester a couple of years back but it is sitting
in the tool box and has yet to be used.

Thanks guys. Good to know.

Anything else you can think of that I need to know? I think I bought the
spacers, shields, whatever they are called that one puts in behind the
injectors so would replace them too I guess. Any likelyhood that I will
have trouble getting the injectors out? I seem to recall people talking
about carbon etc. Or am I confusing that with the glowplugs? When does
one use the reamer doodad? Does my engine have the removable
pre-combustion chambers or whatevers behind the injectors (sorry but I
am not sure that is what they are called). Do I recall someone talking
about slidehammers to remove? Why would one remove them??

Lots of questions and very little knowledge except for what I hear on
here as this is my one and only diesel and I do not have any local
friends who have done this sort of thing.

The help desk tells me, just uninstall that and revert to the previous

Did that but it still does not work.

Neither Explorer nor Firefox seems able to see Java.

Anyone have ideas?

We have uninstalled and reinstalled various versions of Java and nothing
seems to change the fact that it does not show up in the browers.

Not very do-able in Winnipeg these days. Minus 30 this morning. Even
automatic car washes give up and close when it gets too cold. I ran my

sit in the sun long enough to dry out and not freeze solid. That is the

The one time I remember going through one of those touchless washes, it
sprayed the entire car with this red, green, blue glop crap after the wash,
let it sit for half a minute, sprayed it off, then air-knifed everything

If I read it right, you are making a plate that attaches to the engine
in lieu of the original mount for the oil filter. I assume one would
then run some form of aftermarket oil filter relocation setup to move
the filter onto the inner fender. The purpose being to provide more
space near the engine and perhaps to make it easier to change the oil

What think you all of the appropriate filter? I know the adapters are

[MBZ] OT - outsourcing

Pakistan offering to do work for my law office:

· Editing

· Formatting

· Diagrams

· Working on Incorporation Documents and Annual Return files

· Drafting Agreements

· Forms as per requirement

· Time Sheet Management

· Data Entry (QBook, Simply Accounting, etc...)

Cheaply and securely.

The computer age is a bit scary. Pretty soon, they will be offering to
haul my old car over there for a tuneup and then ship it back, cheaper
than the fellow down the block can do it.

Probably data entry. Punch cards and feed, then print out and return.

I knew someone who did that sort of thing here. They did not do the
punch cards to my knowledge. They had a computer and places like
accounting firms would create the punch cards and deliver them to my
fellow who would run them through the computer and print the data out
over night and have the printouts delivered the next day. He made good
money.

When the lease on the computer ended, he asked IBM what they wished to
do with the machine. They asked him to haul it out to the dumpster. He
said that hurt as he had paid them about a million dollars on the lease.

Re: [MBZ] New Snook Car!

2011-02-09 Thread R A Bennell
What you SHOULD have done, is to keep the Ford as a back up vehicle. Big
enough and old enough to be used somewhat informally to haul whatever.
Useful when you need a vehicle while you repair one of the daily drivers
or while you look for your next car after having sold your current one
(which we KNOW you will do). AND of course, great on those miserable
winter days when it snows or rains or whatever since it is big, sits
high and has 4 wheel drive. PLUS, worth very little and not likely to
depreciate a whole lot more unless it really rusts or has some major
catastrophic failure.

It was an Expedition (big sucker). I don't think we could have done
better, actually. It had 150,000 miles and the ABS light was on.
Plus, we got them way down on the Charger and my wife was a master
negotiator on the trade. We originally looked at a 2008 Charger.
They wanted $16,900 (which is way too much). We got them down to
$15,000 and they offered $2500 for the Expedition. I had a dealer
friend of mine check the manheim auctions and the Expedition was
going for $3000. We couldn't make a deal on the 08 Charger for the
$250 payment my wife wanted. So, we called another dealer right from
the showroom and found a 2010 for $16,900. They started falling all
over themselves to make a deal. Finally they showed us the car we
bought. They had it priced at $17,900. Edmunds prices it at
$19,000. I think that's a little high. NADA shows $17,900. Kelly
Bluebook $19,300. Also, it was a certified used. That doesn't do
anything for me immeadiately because its still under factory
warranty. But, it increases the powertrain warranty.

Anyway, they told us they would sell it for $15,900 and give us $3000
for our Expedition. We said no. My wife was awesome. She kept
saying, the payment has to be $250 a month and we won't go longer on
the loan. They got it to within $8 and she still said no. We were
there for almost 5 hours. Finally, they ended up selling their car
for $15,900 and giving us $4400 for the expedition. I had a
potential buyer for my car for $5000. But, I don't think I could have
got them down their car if I didn't have a trade.

Either way, we feel like we got a great deal. And most importantly,
my wife is happy. When she is happy, that means she won't be so
eagle-eyed about my cars. So, in other words, she has a nice car and
now I can get back to my car buying/selling fun.

Went out and shot some lock stuff into the lock and then tried it, totally
frozen, can't even get the key all the way in. The little door on this lock
doesn't close, guess I should fix that...

So I go get my torch out of the garage.Guess what, a torch thats sat in the 0F
garage overnight won't light at all...

So its inside warming up and I guess I'll put a butane lighter in the trunk
(trunk lock works perfectly of course) so when the lock inevitable freezes up on
my return I'll be ready. The butane lighter is easier to warm up under my coat
than the propane torch is...

I can understand it. SBC are very common and there are lots of good
aftermarket parts to make power. Once the hood is closed, no one really
knows what is under there unless you tell them.

So, if you like the car but need an engine, I can see swapping to a SBC.
There were kits available to put them in Jags - that was probably an
improvement in most cases.

If you are driving what amounts to a beater Benz, why not add some
power? Esp late model Vortec engines - pretty reliable etc.

[MBZ] fines for use of cell phone without hands free device??

2011-01-13 Thread R A Bennell

So, to start with, I know, I am a lawyer so why am I asking you folks??

I don't know and am wondered if any of you might know is the basic answer.

Anyone actually look at the laws, regulations, whatever, that impose the
fines for use of cell phones in your jurisdiction?

The reason I ask is that my cell phone has a camera in it and I
sometimes use it to take photos while driving if I see something
interesting. It occurred to me recently, that this is probably no
longer acceptable. If an officer sees me with the phone in hand, I am
going to get the ticket and I doubt he has to prove I was actually
phoning someone. The phone company should be able to provide evidence
that I was not on a call at that time but that might not be sufficient
to get one off - and one would have to waste the time going to fight the
ticket which would cost more than the ticket.

Then the question arises - is using a digital camera instead any
better? I am guessing that the law says one is not to use electronic
devices rather than cell phones.

Re: [MBZ] fines for use of cell phone without hands free device??

2011-01-13 Thread R A Bennell
Well, my car is in the garage for the duration of the cold weather so
not much to do on it for a bit. I did buy a new set of H4 headlights for
it and will install them come spring. May even go the route of relays
and higher wattage bulbs if the H4's that I have are not a significant
improvement.

I have other issues too like seats that are disintegrating but again,
that may have to wait for some warmer weather.

I did look up the local statute and regulations to see if it will likely
pose a problem to use my cell phone camera. I suspect that I may get
away with it so long as I have my Bluetooth doodad on the visor so I can
show an officer that I do have the ability to use it hands free. The
regs say one cannot even look at or hold the phone but I am guessing
that I can just tell them I was checking the battery level or checking
to see if it was actually on, and will get away with it.

Not sure what they might say about the camera issue. The regs do not say
anything about the use of cameras but do say you cannot use a device
that includes a cell phone.

The conversation went something like this:
You were talking on a cell phone and that is illegal while you are
driving.

I was eating a sandwich.
Why did you have it up to your ear?
So I could see where I was going.
Where is the sandwich?
He picked up a real sandwich which had a bite out of it.
Where is your cellphone?
He pretended to look for it and then retrieved it from the floor.
The cop went back to his car and apparently called headquarters.
You can go., said the cop.
That was the only time he was stopped, and he won't have that
problem again since he bought a new car which has a
built-in microphone and speaker.

Perhaps you can cut a hole in a slice of bread for the lens,
Randy, and use your cellphone camera the same way.
Of course, if you were a lawyer in Florida you would have
nothing to worry about since cops never ticket lawyers unless
they're blind drunk or politicians in a different party than the
sheriffs or chiefs.

I saw in the sheriffs list in the local paper where a woman had
been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon because she had
one of those little pepper spray cannisters in her purse.
Interesting.

Note: Actually I prefer to lurk and simply enjoy the OT and
benefit from the descriptions of Mercedes fixes, but for some
strange reason our old Mercedes are running well and no one
has any OT to talk about. Maybe it's a good omen; or bad?

From: R A Bennell b...@mts.net

So, to start with, I know, I am a lawyer so why am I asking you folks??
I don't know and am wondered if any of you might know is the basic
answer.
Anyone actually look at the laws, regulations, whatever, that impose
the fines for use of cell phones in your jurisdiction?

The reason I ask is that my cell phone has a camera in it and I
sometimes use it to take photos while driving if I see something
interesting. It occurred to me recently, that this is probably no
longer acceptable. If an officer sees me with the phone in hand, I am
going to get the ticket and I doubt he has to prove I was actually
phoning someone. The phone company should be able to provide evidence
that I was not on a call at that time but that might not be
sufficient to get one off - and one would have to waste the time
going to fight the ticket which would cost more than the ticket.

Then the question arises - is using a digital camera instead any
better? I am guessing that the law says one is not to use electronic
devices rather than cell phones.

It looks as though we likely have an easy fix on my problem washer. The
centre (center?) post is supposed to be tight to the tub and it was not.
Never having worked on such a beast, I was not aware of that. I have
sort of discovered the problem by accident while conferring with a
fellow in Alberta who knows a whole lot about them. In any event, it
appears that I can make myself a wrench out of a piece of pipe and
tighten the doodad and we should be good to go.

As for the rest of it, you are on the right track. Good luck.
Personally, I like the old Easy because they have a high speed spinner
to extract the water from the clothes.

A better choice is just an old maytag automatic as a second machine.
The top loading Old reliable kind that hasn't been made for about 12
years now.

If you want to really go retro, get an old maytag wringer, put it on
the front porch and use a Maytag gas engine to run it. Put two
rockers out there, a gallon clay jug, and sit out there with a double
barrel on your lap!

-
Thanks for your input. Reading on the internet suggests that Maytag and
Speedqueen are the best of the old wringers for reliability and parts
availability. I found out that one can still buy a new Speedqueen
wringer that is a clone of the old ones made in about 1955 if my memory
serves to be correct, now manufactured in Saudia Arabia. They are
apparently so exactly the same that the new parts will fit the old ones.
Parts are likely expensive, but if one wants them, that may be the price
one must pay. Interesting (to me at least).

I have been in touch with a fellow on another forum who has been very
helpful. He has explained how to make a puller to remove the pin
without hammering on it. Also a big wrench for removing the piece
below it. We might just get this thing apart far enough to see why it
leaks without destroying it.

We have a Maytag Atlantis washer - about 5 years old - one of the last
versions with the agitator I believe as now the top loaders are like the
front loaders and do not have an agitator. We might decide to upgrade
the primary washer and relegate the existing one to dirty duty if this
one does not work out. Time will tell.

My good wife has decided she needs/wants an old style wringer washing
machine for doing dirty jobs like rugs, rags, and my younger son's dirty
work clothes (he is a mechanic). She is reluctant to put this stuff in
the regular washer. We looked around and found one that looked good but
is obviously old and apparently has not been used in a while. We bought
it and hauled it home and have discovered an issue. It leaks like a
seive (sp?). A bit of looking leads me to believe it is leaking in the
middle of the tub around the hole where the agitator spindle projects up
into the tub. I am hoping that whatever is in there as a seal is
somewhat generic as I don't know what will be available in parts for
this old beast. It is a Simplicity brand. Maybe should have held out for
a Maytag or SpeedQueen based upon what I see on the net but a bit late
for that now so will try to fix it.

My first task is to get enough parts off that I can see the offending
seal. There is an aluminum - pot metal doodad surrounding the main
agitator shaft. There is a pin through it near the top. I am told it
will be a tapered pin and to ensure I drive it out in the correct
direction.Should not be a problem as the one side appears to have a head
on it - unless it has been peened over but it does not look like that -
quite evenly round etc.

Then I need to get the aluminum doodad off of the shaft. I am told I
need to heat it but to be careful as it may be zamac which is easy to
overheat. Will use propane torch and so should be easy enough to be careful.

Once I get the agitator drive off of the shaft, I should be able to see
what is under it. Right now, the bottom of the agitator drive is about 3
inches in diameter and covers the whole area.

Anyone got experience with this sort of thing and have any good
suggestions on how to go about it?

Absolutely true, but not convenient on Sunday afternoon when one is

She has been soaking Tom's dirty clothing in the laundry tub and
rinsing and then wringing it out by hand before putting it in the washer
but that is not easy. I know as I have helped wring stuff out. We maybe
should have gone with a second automatic washer to do just that stuff
but she wanted to try this. We won't be out a whole lot if it does not
pan out.

parts that should require hardened and tempered tool steel would be the

pictures of the regulation part. The frame could be assembled and bolted

Mini-vans are just the station wagons of today. Very practical for
families and less expensive than SUV's which are of course, similar in
size and capacity. Sedans just are not as big as they used to be. A
Honda Accord is now considered a family car. I am only 5'8 and about
200# and I have a hard time getting into my wife's Accord. The roof
lines on modern cars are so low and sloped to benefit the aerodynamics
that they are not easy to enter. A van will normally be much easier to
get in and out of - that is one reason why we see so many elderly folks
driving them. They also sit higher so there is better visibility. Take
the seats out or fold them flat if you have one of the newer stowe and
go setups and you can haul more than the thing is designed to carry. My
neighbor used to load his poor old van up with yard waste etc and haul
to the local dump. I was amazed at what he piled inside it. Travel with
your family and you have space for the kids in the back as well as the
luggage and the cooler etc. Very practical in many ways. I have tried my
best at times to convince my wife that she would like one as I think it
would be useful but she has declined. I don't want to drive it so we
don't have one. If I could justify having another vehicle around, I
would cheerfully have a Honda van.

Even without the limiters, you're never going to see the top speed of a car
on a track, the straights just aren't long enough. Well, unless you're
driving down the old Mulsanne straight at Le Mans, before they put the
girlie kink in the middle to slow people down, a little. hee hee

Even on really fast cars, you need a long straight bit of road to
squeeze out those last mph. Even with big HP cars, you know what they say
about the power requirements going up exponentially in regards to top
speed. If 600 HP will get you to 200 mph, if you want to go another 20 mph
on top of that, you need to add 200+ more HP. The air becomes your enemy,
and the balance between punching through it, and keeping the car on the road
at the same time, is paid for with lots of HP! hee hee

As to your last sentence Curt, I hear that often. It causes me more than a
little concern as I really like fast cars with lots of HP!!! ;-) hee hee

My recollection, is that once upon a time, someone on here had plans and
dimensions for making the crimping tool. Anyone still got a copy of

Re: [MBZ] more holes

2011-01-05 Thread R A Bennell
My father had 2 different '53 Roadmaster Buicks with the straight 8. He
talked about them fondly most of his life. The first one came to grief -
wet road and worn tires and a handy rock face. The 2nd was a gift from
the insurance company in replacement for the 1st. He was very happy as
the 2nd one was in much nicer condition. I remember him coming home and
handing my mother a chrome ring and telling her that was about all that
was left of the Buick. I think if was from one of the front turn signal
lights. It sat on a shelf in our kitchen for many years after.

one. Unfortunately, being a dumb HS kid, he over revved it too much
and snapped the crank. It had a sound all its own.

...Beg pardon, weren't those holes originally where the exhaust

All the holes were on one side in those days, and had an exhaust

You are thinking of my friend CB's Bugatti 35B.

Looks like the Buick holes appeared in 1949.

[MBZ] Laptop Issues Resolved?

2011-01-03 Thread R A Bennell
I am cautiously optimistic about my laptop issues being resolved. Thank
you to all of those who responded to my earlier queries.

I ended up using a freebee software utility to wipe out the whole hard
drive and then re-installed Vista. Took the better part of two days for
it to download and update all of the Windows issues but now seems to be
running fine.

The biggest issue I had was that I wiped out all of the special drivers
and had to go looking for some in order to get the wireless internet
hookup to run.

Have not loaded anything else on it yet but think I may do some form of
backup at this point in case I need to do it again.

Is there a built in means of making a recovery setup or should I use
something like Norton Ghost to do it?

If both pass, do an F9 (I think) and reset all of the BIOS settings to default.

I agree with everything Dan said except that I would load
the XP and
run that. If you don't have an XPSP4 disk, it takes a

have the

If the machine is booting to safe mode, and even allowing you network
access, chances are good that this is not a hardware problem. It sounds as
if a driver is loading that shouldn't, or a DLL (Dynamic Linked Library) has
been corrupted. But I'd give a good wager that it's a software related
issue.

I don't care about any of the data on the computer. My son had good backup

Vista does not appear to make it easy to wipe the drive clean and start
over. I cannot help but feel that might be advantageous. I would pay for a
Windows 7 licence if I was satisfied that this thing was not having
hardware issues. I don't wnat to spend the money for the new operating
system if it has other issues until those issues are addressed.

Nah, this is untrue. If you have a Vista install disc, it requires a bit of
reading, because the option is slightly obfuscated. However, if you have the
original HP restore discs, then it's simple. Boot from the HP disc, and it
will blow everything away whether you want it to or not. (Those things
should be classified as weapons.)

I have Windows XP and Windows 2000 disks available as well that could be
installed at least to try it.

Anyone have good suggestions on what I should do to get this thing up and
running?

Randy

XP or 2000 would also be a fine choice since they are available if you want
to test hardware. However, if the laptop was designed around Vista, there
may be drivers that are unavailable in earlier operating systems. Which
might make you think there is a hardware problem, when it is still software
related.

Let me know which type of Vista disc you have, and we can move forward from
there.

[MBZ] OT - computer issues

2010-12-30 Thread R A Bennell
Since many of you folks appear to be computer savy, let me seek your
input, please.

I have an HP laptop - probably about 4 years old, that has a problem. My
son was using it and it started to act up and he was in the midst of his
Masters program and could not be without it, so we got him a new one and
this one has sat on the top of the piano for a year or more. I'd like to
get it going again and my wife is tired of looking at it sit there.

It is an intel dual core chip setup with 4 Gigs of RAM etc, running
Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have no previous experience with Vista so that does not help much.

It will start to boot up and then just sit there with a blank grey
screen. I can force it to boot by holding down the on/off switch. It
will then re-start and offer me the choice to fire up in safe mode. It,
of course offers the suggestion that I put the Windows disk in and
repair the problem but that has been done a couple of times without much
success. It might work for a time or two but then it goes back to the
scenario I described above.

It will boot to safe mode and will permit me to access the net so
yesterday I downloaded the malware software you folks were talking about
and ran a full scan last evening. It took 2 hous and looked at over 500
thousand files and found only 2 infected things which it has apparently
fixed. That has not solved the problem, although I acknowledge that I
have not tried to run the windows disk to repair it since killing the
two bad items.

I don't care about any of the data on the computer. My son had good
backup and moved on to the new computer without issues so he does not

Does anyone know if a tandem pump was ever made with v-belt pulleys?
It seems like the simple thing would be to replace the PS pump with a
tandem pump. Then a SLS head is not needed, as the tandem pump
provides the SLS pressure.

The tandem pumps I have seen on the 124 wagons all were made for serp
belts. I believe the 85 TD has v-belts.

Since you are so close to PGA, why not drive over there and ask them
if a tandem pump can be modified to fit your OM617?

This was in refernece to the SLS head-free 1985 300TD. I have since
discovered that the car was hard to start because I goosed the
throttle instead of alowing the glow system to do its job. SInce
then, it has started without incindent on cold days, even when it's
windy.

P.S. Do you or anybody else for that matter want this engine if and
when I ever remove it? It was from a 1985 300TD sedan with allegedly
25 K miles. Runs strong, blows ice cold air, etc.

I don't know what is. lol Mind you, there's a lot of truth to what you
say. I still love cleaning a car, it relaxes me. But for the really dirty
stuff, I'm more likely to pay someone else to do it. There was a time
rolling around on the ground and messing with cars was a fun thing to do.
It no longer has the same effect on me.

Speaking of that, I'm off to the garage now to get the oil changed in the
minivan. By the time I buy it, get dirty, rolling around on the ground, and
then have to take the old stuff to a recycler, it costs me about $10 more to
let someone else do. Of course, I'll vacuum the car when I get home, I
don't want you to think I'm lazy. ;-)

Re: [MBZ] hose heater versus block heater?!!

2010-12-15 Thread R A Bennell

You will find other possible solutions out there if you look.

I remember external strip heaters were avaliable in the 70's. The fellow
who parked beside me had one on a Honda Accord in about 1978. I remember
him cleaning it off in the summer as some oil had got on it and it
smoked when hot.

There are also magnetic heaters that you might be able to temporarily
use by sticking them onto the side of the block or onto the oilpan from
underneath. Would need to be removed when you drive it.

Even hanging a trouble light under the hood with the light on will
produce enough heat to help.

Or there are electric battery blankets that will help by keeping the
starter spinning faster.

All temporary solutions until you are able to install the proper thing
once the weather warms enough to make it easier.

[MBZ] Headlights Q

2010-12-13 Thread R A Bennell
Some may recall my questions about upgrading headlights on my 75 300D.
Basic round 7 headlights. Currently has rather flat lenses with a Volvo
name cast in and says H3.

Anyone know what the difference is between H3 and H4?

Re: [MBZ] Headlights Q

2010-12-13 Thread R A Bennell
I think these have insert bulbs and are not sealed beams. I also
assume they are not original as they have Volvo imprinted in the glass.
The problem I have is that there is a huge difference between high and
low beam. I find the low beam does not provide sufficient view ahead and
unfortunately most of the time it is not possible to use high beam due
to other traffic. So, I am looking to improve without breking the bank.
I think I will order a set of the Bosch and see if it makes much difference.

Re: [MBZ] Headlights Q

2010-12-13 Thread R A Bennell
I can look again but I believe it says H3 on the lens. I thought that
normally, 2 lamp systems had larger diameter than 4 lamp systems back in
the day when we all used sealed beam lamps. Am I wrong? In any event,
these definitely have both high and low beam.
The 115 has only 2 lamps obviously apart from the fog lights. They work
ok too as additional close light but not too good for travel at highway
speeds - if I remember right, they also go out when one switches to low
beam.

I do not do a lot of night driving any more but find that I need much
more light than I once did. I drove the MB back from the lake 2 summers
ago in the dark and it was an awful trip. I felt like I was driving
through a tunnel for a good part of it. Part is 2 lane and much of the 4
lane part is close enough to the other side that one cannot run on high
beam most of the time. Add to that the concern about wildlife on the
road and it is not a pleasant trip.

So, I am looking for better light in case I have to do it again.

I had a set of the Bosch in a Chevy back in about 1975 and remember them
as being good. I also had a single one in my 1979 Goldwing. I think I
still have it but only one so I don't think I want to do this until I
have two and it won't get actually installed until April likely as it is
cold here and the car is in the garage for the duration. I put the
battery tender on it yesterday and that is about all I will likely do
with it until the weather warms up a lot unless I decide to haul seats
inside and work on them in the basement.

H3s? are you certain? H3 lamps are single-filament bulbs; what should

obviously some PO was screwing with your cars lamps; have you
stood in front of them with the lights on in both High and Low to see
what's actually lighting up? i've seen some examples where people have
played games with putting Highs only in where the Fogs go, etc, but
odds are better some DSPO took H3 lamps and tried to use them with H4
bulbs (which won't work well, as you're finding out)... no telling
exactly how they'd do this since H3s have a single Pos wire lead and
ground through the base as opposed to a 3-prong plug like H4s have,
but it'll probably be pretty clear what's going on as soon as you pull
the lamp housing out to see what's behind it. hopefully they didn't
bugger up the wiring trying to use the wrong lamps!

in any case, i'd recommend Cibié H4 lamps over anything else i've
tried; we've got some in the family that are still performing well
after a decade or more in use. Hella lamps always seemed like the
difference between High and Low was too great and the lenses seemed
like they cracked very quickly in all the cars our family has used
them in (giving us the 'opportunity' to try something else). Sunpowers
were terribly poor at directing light and harsh on glare for oncoming
traffic. the rectangular IPFs i've tried also had this problem, as
well as some others.

if you're getting light out of the main lamps on both High and Low
settings and it really is an H3 housing, chances are you have an H4
bulb in an H3 housing and need to get a proper H4 lamp housing to use
with your H4 bulbs. get good ones, and you'll probably never need to
replace them, and wonder why you've been living with such poor
lighting for so long.;-)

cheers!

So how does that work? My understanding is that I could buy more remotes
for my F150 off of ebay and program them to work with the truck myself.
I think there are instructions for programming in the owner's manual.

There was a time when you could not get another key made unless you had
2 keys. If you only had one, then the dealer had to re-program it
somehow and it took time. Now, I understand the local locksmiths can do
it with one key only and it is no problem.

Re: [MBZ] The W123 of vacuum cleaners

2010-12-07 Thread R A Bennell

I did, many years ago.

I ran the pipe for the second floor up through a closet on the main
floor into a closet on the 2nd floor and then put the outlet through the
back wall of the closet into the hallway. Pipe is about 2 inches
diameter if my memory is right. Our 2 story house has a duct chase in
one spot that permits heating ducts, plumbing etc to go from the
basement to the 2nd floor. I used that as the spot for one of the main
floor outlets.

Our house has a full basement and the vacuum unit is mounted in the
basement. Has worked well for about 25 years. Put a new motor in it a
year or so ago. Think the old one just needs bearings and brushes so I
kept it but SWMBO was very anxious to have it fixed and insisted we swap
motors ASAP. It had become intermittent. Sometimes would not start.

Ours uses the white pipe. I think if I had to do it over, I would use
the clear pipe. I once had to find a blockage and cut it out to fix the
problem. Clear pipe would have made it easier to do that. The blockage
was a piece of dowel about 2 inches long from kid's toys. Got caught on
a T and would not turn the corner.

Central vacs are definitely the way to go. While the initial upfront
cost
is high, the convenience and efficiency of a central vac system blows
(sucks?) away any portable vac.

Not to mention not having to empty it out buy maybe once or twice a
year...

We have built a couple of homes with central vacs, and I would do it
again
without hesitation.

We
have an Oreck. It's a good vacuum, better than the Royal
it replaced,
but I don't think they really live up to the legend. Open
one up to
change the belt---it's all plastic and the motor doesn't
look like
much. Hotels use them because they are light and they
vacuum every
day---they never have to pick up a lot of deep dirt.

For pure
suction, I think our Kenmore canister has the Oreck beat by
a fair
margin. It's not as easy to use or nearly as light,
though.

I did, many years ago.

I ran the pipe for the second floor up through a closet on the main
floor into a closet on the 2nd floor and then put the outlet through
the back wall of the closet into the hallway. Pipe is about 2 inches
diameter if my memory is right. Our 2 story house has a duct chase
in one spot that permits heating ducts, plumbing etc to go from the
basement to the 2nd floor. I used that as the spot for one of the
main floor outlets.

Our house has a full basement and the vacuum unit is mounted in the
basement. Has worked well for about 25 years. Put a new motor in it
a year or so ago. Think the old one just needs bearings and brushes
so I kept it but SWMBO was very anxious to have it fixed and insisted
we swap motors ASAP. It had become intermittent. Sometimes would not
start.

Ours uses the white pipe. I think if I had to do it over, I would use
the clear pipe. I once had to find a blockage and cut it out to fix
the problem. Clear pipe would have made it easier to do that. The
blockage was a piece of dowel about 2 inches long from kid's toys.
Got caught on a T and would not turn the corner.

Re: [MBZ] The W123 of vacuum cleaners

2010-12-07 Thread R A Bennell
It does not appear to be an issue. One normally runs a wire along with
the pipe anyway as it is part of the switch on the outlet setup that
automatically turns on the vacuum unit when one inserts the hose end
into the outlet. If there was a need for grounding, one would think they
would provide a bare wire to run along with the low voltage switch
wiring for the unit. We installed ours in about 1983 and apart from
having one obstruction years back when the kids were little and playing
with toys, and one change of motor in the unit last year, it has been
fairly flawless. We did have to replace the carpet sweeper unit once
too. Ours is the type powered by the airflow and not an electric unit
with a cord. We added on to the house in 1987 and I tapped into the
existing system to provide a couple more outlets and that was fairly
easy too.

wire (like 14g electrical) along it (outside) and to a ground, taped
down with the aluminum tape, helps keep the charge down, which could
cause sparks and mayhem in a dusty environment. I even notice that in
my roll-around shop vac when using a couple of hoses joined together,
in the winter when it's dry you can get a nice ZAP off the thing.
I don't know if that house vac stuff considers that aspect or not.

Around here, most gas stations will sell small squeeze bottles or
aerosol cans of methyl hydrate to squirt into locks to unfreeze them.
Might want to give that a try. I have been in the situation where I

I also have an electric doodad powered by batteries that is sort of like
a key. The battery voltage causes the key thing to heat up and one is

really don't know where it is but remember receiving it as a stocking

Actually, not often a problem even with going through a carwash unless
there is a problem with the little doodad that closes the hole for the
key. Much better now that most vehicles have remote control door locks.
I rarely to never actually put the key in the lock so the little door
lasts longer.

Has not been all that cold here recently - just lots of snow. Supposed
to cool down a bit this week and it likely will be a whole lot colder in
January. However, I don't think the cold bothers me nearly so much as
the darkness. We are going into that time of the year when it is dark by
5PM. Won't get much better until the beginning of February. We make up
for it in the spring and early summer but right now, I could use more
daylight.
