I'm going to blow my mind and again stick up for Microsoft. Its simply not their fault that Toshiba doesn't make XP drivers... Thats like blaming MB because your 240D doesn't support the hydrogen economy... As for Linux as a newbie I'd suggest something more like Ubuntu or Mepis rather than Debian as you'll find them more user-friendly where Debian is more nerd-centric... I've been using Mepis at home for about 4 years now and have been very pleased. The only issue I've had is that the latest version (8) tries to use IPV6 by default which my DSL modem doesn't support. Its an easy setting to change though. In a business environment you need spares. Any amount of downtime is unacceptable. I always thought it was rather funny that people would buy guaranteed 4-hour service contracts for their mission-critical servers. I don't know about you guys, but in my world a 4-hour downtime would put me out of business. The VERBA (Employee Retirement plan) owns part of the company in place of the company making their commitment to the retirement plan whole and last I checked, the plan was only 68% funded. This is very high risk to all retirees future retirees because if the company fails, it takes a major portion of the retirement plan with it. Would you be happy if your Employer explained in a staff meeting that you would loose about 40% of the funds in your 401K plan if they did not survive The Union and the Employees are not happy about this but it's another decision that had to be made, it's not any different than the dealership decision. Also, everyone involved gave up their share to make this work. My Wife is a UAW Union worker, one who in your opinion benefited the most from this. Her part of the concessions were: She took a $2.00 / hour pay cut. She lost her COLA (cost of living) adjustment. She will get no pay raise over the next 4 years. We have reduced medical benefits. And as a result, the cost of my appointments medication just increased by $120 / month. In addition, she did not receive a pay raise over the last 4 years - this works out to 8 years with a $2.00 / hour pay cut that translates into a much larger pay cut with inflation! Would you work for someone, anyone, knowing that you would not get a pay raise in 8 years? Probably not! Management will remember people who came in and took initiative to do a good job. When I landed my tech support position at Pinnacle in 2003 the economy was just rebounding from that soft recession lite. I worked my ass off for them and was well rewarded. Pinnacle got bought by Avid in 2005 and again I worked my ass off. I've done well with Avid and continue to work my ass off... For the moment the rewards have stopped but I expect them to resume when the economy does. [MBZ] So there is due process after all...
Chrysler dealer files adversary proceeding to fight the loss of his franchise. I thought that was a done deal already, ignoring the dealers' due process rights. Looks like those who want to fight DO get their day in court. Mitch. Chrysler Dealer Says He Was Axed for Not Buying Cars May 26 (Bloomberg) -- Chrysler LLC pressured dealers to buy cars in the months before filing for bankruptcy and a Florida dealer claims it is losing the franchise because it refused, according to court documents. Jim Boast Dodge Inc. of Bradenton, Florida, asked a New York judge in a May 23 filing to block Chrysler’s attempt to terminate its franchise agreement with the dealership, saying the automaker is breaking Florida law and doesn’t have a reasonable business case for the decision. Between January and March, Chrysler urged U.S. dealers to buy extra cars to convince the U.S. government of the company’s viability and avoid bankruptcy, Boast said in the filing. On May 14, Chrysler asked the judge to cancel 789 car dealership agreements, including Jim Boast’s, who said the dealership bought four vehicles instead of the 60 it was expected to order. Chrysler executives threatened dealers who didn’t buy enough cars in a Feb. 13 conference call, saying they would “never forget that those dealers did not help the company when it desperately needed help,” Boast said in the filing. “It will be worth finding out,” the dealer said in court papers, “how many other dealers who failed to adhere to the debtor’s threats have now found themselves on the chopping block.” Chrysler won’t comment on specific allegations made by dealers because the issues will be dealt with by the judge, spokesman Fred Spar said in a telephone interview. Reducing Network The company rejected contracts with about 25 percent of its dealers, who accounted for about 14 percent of sales, Spar said. “It’s unfortunate,” he said. Chrysler must reduce its dealers network to win approval of a plan to sell its assets to a new company it will form with Italian automaker Fiat, “or else we would have to liquidate all 3,200 dealerships,” he said. The automaker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy April 30 after a group of 20 secured lenders rejected an offer by the U.S. government that would have paid them $2.25 billion for $6.9 billion of debt, or 33 cents on the dollar. Chrysler’s 22 U.S. factories with about 26,800 hourly workers were idled May 1. Chrysler, in its April 30 filings, listed assets of $39.3 billion and liabilities of $55.2 billion, making it the fifth- largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News. Family Business The Boast family has been a Dodge dealer for almost 70 years, James Keedy, president of Jim Boast Dodge, said in a court filing. “In light of the fact Bob Boast Dodge has been performing at very good sales levels, I do not believe the termination of Bob Boast Dodge is performance based,” Keedy said. The contract was terminated because the dealer would “not succumb to the recent threats and extortionist behavior” of Chrysler executives, he said in the filing. The dealer is also known as Bob Boast Dodge. A group of 300 Chrysler dealers has also sought to delay the sale of the automaker’s assets, saying they need more time to fight the cancellation of their franchise agreements. A hearing is scheduled June 3 in New York. Re: [MBZ] OT: Retrospect backup problem
Education and enterprise you're talking customers with many (hundreds?) of machines right? What about a video production house with maybe 5 machines. How can they afford 2-3 days of downtime? At one point the company I was working for had a board that in some circumstances would fry an XW8000's motherboard. The board ran slightly hot and the XW8000 didn't have the best cooling (better than the MDD Mac though) so if you did something dumb like not have your AC on all weekend the MB would fry. We got HP to do MANY replacements on those, oh there was the one XW8200 I put a card into while the computer was ON. It'd had gone to standby and the fans had turned off, that fried that motherboard too... In all cases HP had somebody (not an HP employee but a contractor of sorts) on site with parts either the next day or the day after that. Alternately they'd send parts if I said I didn't need a tech. I got so I could do a full MB replacement (including remembering the screws under the processors) in 30 minutes flat. A customer (interestingly he was the guy who wrote the screenplay for Get Shorty) had an early G5 that the thermister went out on so the fans ran full blast all the time. He took it in and they adjusted it which ment they unplugged the fans. He took it home and of course it'd shut down after ~5 minutes. So he took it in again and they adjusted it which ment plugging the fans back in... Finally Apple just gave him a new computer which is what they should have done in the first place instead of messing around for a week. -Curt Date: Mon, 25 May 2009 17:45:39 -0700 (PDT) From: LWB250 lwb...@yahoo.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Retrospect backup problem To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: 671836.95329...@web65710.mail.ac4.yahoo.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 For both education and enterprise customers, Apple does the same thing that HP does (I worked with both in education and enterprise environments.) When something breaks and cannot be resolved by a second tier tech (it rarely gets to that) they send a prepaid FedEx overnight box to the customer, both for laptops and desktops. Turnaround averages about 2-3 business days, not including shipping, at least in the experiences I had. Both HP and Apple do this, although HP often just sent a replacement for desktops and had one of their local service techs pick up the offending machine. With Apple, I had the option to take the machine to the local Genius Bar at the Apple Store, and if I called ahead I would get priority service. On more than one occasion with a critical laptop I got it fixed or replaced on the spot. HP had no local service, other than for servers. And those guys took a good 2-3 days to show up, unless we screamed bloody murder. Dan -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My wife had one put into the Dakota because she'd left the dome light on overnight. The guy came, jump started the truck, let it run for 2 seconds, shut it off and of course it wouldn't restart. He said See, its a bad battery (2 year old Diehard). Sold her a new monster battery that old one is too small anyway (geez it'd worked fine for 2 years) for $120. I was pissed, I'd only paid $90 for the Diehard 2 years ago! I called AAA and told them how this guy had jacked my wife and I wasn't going to stand for it. They couldn't refund her money since its a sale through the tow company but gave us 2 years free AAA. Then I called the Tow company and complained to them since I checked the part numbers and the new battery wasn't the right model and the old one was and got 2 free oil changes. For better or for worse, this list is sort of like a quaint London pub or a fraternity house (sorry, that is Banned). Someone is going to make a comment, someone is going to comment on the comment, and as long as the police (Kaleb) do not have to break up a fight, everyone is okay next morning -- perhaps with a headache or two by some participants. As in any London pub (as if I've ever been to London!) -- ok, let's do Cheers. Sam has to break up the fights. We have our Norm, we have our Cliff, and we have our I am somewhere between Frasier and Coach. Example. I did (truth) about 200 miles round trip yesterday in my 240D and didn't burn a drop of Mobil 1 15W-50. It was my daughter's university graduation. Alternator belt squeaked a bit when the engine starts, so I will have to tighten that tomorrow. (yawn) That said, this list is NOT the place to get political and get nasty and call names. That is what the two flavors of Banned (purgatory and hell) are for. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [MBZ] 240D oil caps
I have that oil-cap blow by problem on both my 240D and 190D. In both cases the cars had been largely city driven before I got them and had carboned up considerably. I think that while the carbon around the rings has gone and the cars start as I'd expect and run with the power I'd expect that there is still carbon in the PCV system which leads to too much pressure in the crankcase. The next easiest leak point is the cap so there it goes. I need at some point to track that down for which I plan to use my furlough week in August... -Curt Date: Mon, 25 May 2009 05:18:29 +0300 From: Wonko the Sane don.b...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] unsubscribe To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: 61dfb08b0905241918i15a08da3pef08c1a4ec78...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I drive one mile each way to work, and do about 60 miles round trip every weekend to get out of Hooterville. If that's how you want to play it, then fine - but where will the list be in another decade? At this rate it will end up being the same 5 people rehashing the same politics and driving the same 35 year old cars. Any of us are expected to make outlandish posts now and then. When that happens it's up to the collective wisdom of the list to react in a responsible manner. That usually means resisting the temptation of sending out a reply to put someone in their place. Less is more. The most effective reply is to not reply. I've said before that the attitudes from Banned bleed over into this list too often. That does not necessarily mean you swear. It's also how you treat people. In this case they were treated badly. Sure you can blame him for starting it - but then you are part of the problem. To be honest, when I saw that $2/hour post from Tom I wanted to bitch-slap him for being oblivious to the plight of the majority of Americans and it suited me just fine that he jumped ship. He's an idiot and deserved what he got. But if we knew all there is to know about each other you'd think I'm an idiot and I'd probably think you are too. Best to keep the conversation here to our known common interest in my opinion. I have no problem picking your brain about what's wrong with my car without knowing that you are elitist, racist, communist, or a 3rd generation member of NAMBLA. I don't go up to a guy showing his 1940 Ford pickup truck and start up a conversation about gay rights or child abuse within the Catholic Church. That's common sense and good judgment. We need more of both here in my opinion. Kaleb should not have to play cop and would probably piss off more people if he did. How do you keep your backup servers ready to use in case of a breakdown? Do you update them daily or is there a continuous or simultaneous backup? Thanks, Gerry --- From: dave walton walton.d...@gmail.com In a business environment you need spares. Any amount of downtime is unacceptable. If someone is using any Microsoft products at all on a mission critical server, they have bigger problems that no amount of redundancy will correct IMO. Postgresql requires no license, but one can purchase a professional support contract from a 3rd party. It also doesn't suffer from the severe lack-of-professional quality that deeply permeates every product Microsoft has ever made. On the other hand, Microsofts poor product quality has led me to some interesting adventures. Yesterday Microsoft streets and trips directed me to drive my 190D on a deeply rutted 4WD trail. I followed it for several miles, hoping it would get better before my wife convinced me to turn around. Re: [MBZ] 'Nother OT - slimed tires
On the subject of Slime, my used riding lawnmower came with a tire (one of the big ones in back) apparently pre-Slimed by the previous owner. It was flat at the start of mowing season this year and I pumped it up, but noticed when I tried to check the pressure that the valve left green gunk on the fitting on the pressure gauge. This brings to mind a couple of questions: - Can you re-Slime tires that have already been Slimed once? - When do you give up and get new ones already? - Isn't getting a lawnmower tire on and off the rim supposed to be a huge pain in the you-know-what? - Did I ruin my favorite tire pressure gauge by putting it on the valve stem of a Slimed tire? Re: [MBZ] 'Nother OT - slimed tires
Practically new :) The Cub at the house is a '64 model 70, the one at camp is a '67 model 72 although it has a rebuilt engine. I suspect the worst tires are ones that have to live outside all the time and the best are ones that get washed off after every mowing. As with everything the more care you put in the better they last. -Curt Date: Tue, 26 May 2009 16:51:20 -0400 From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu Subject: Re: [MBZ] 'Nother OT - slimed tires To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: m1vdnnd1vb@cs.indiana.edu Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com writes: The rubber in most lawnmower tires is so cheap I think its probably a necessity on one more than a year or two old. My Cub Cadet at home (which is also a Garden Tractor but has a mower and push blade) has FF in one tire but they seem to be of a better quality and the others haven't leaked yet... Mine is a wheel horse, at least 20 years old, and AFAIK has the orginal tires. Only the one leaked, until I slimed it. The others are in good shape. Re: [MBZ] 'Nother OT - slimed tires
For me once the tire is so bad the FF doesn't help it the rest of the mower is falling apart so bad its time to spend another $50... I'm an absolute bottom feeder for mowers. The mower at camp is a Montgomery-Ward Powr-Kraft that I got for free from my father-in-law for getting it out of his garage. Its a poor mower but the motor on it is fantastic. I'm now on the lookout for a better mower of the same size class (38 cut, 10 or 11hp) that I can transfer the motor into. I don't expect (or am willing) to pay more than $25. At home I've got an early '60s ('64? I forget) Snapper RER (rear engine rider) that was my great uncles that has zero compression. I bought another with a bad carb (but loads of compression) for $25 and I intend to move the motor over. The newer one is dumb looking and has no class, the old one is awesome looking but beat. The motor, tires and drive disk from the new one will make it a good mower. I like the RERs because they're stupid simple. -Curt Date: Tue, 26 May 2009 14:12:48 -0700 From: Alex Chamberlain apchamberl...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] 'Nother OT - slimed tires To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: f7b6bd1a0905261412x4f2dba8ak6c566607e0dbd...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 On the subject of Slime, my used riding lawnmower came with a tire (one of the big ones in back) apparently pre-Slimed by the previous owner. Re: [MBZ] Dead battery?
I did some searching online and found that Optima was a small Swedish company that was sold in the summer of 2000 (probably after my battery that still works was made) to Wisconsin based Johnson Controls, Inc. It's hard to imagine that US ownership would reduce the quality of a fine Swedish product! *cough* Volvo *cough* Saab *cough* excuse me I seem to be choking on the concept of suddenly reducing quality of a prestigious brand to increase short term profit...
