You need to subscribe to Banned.
Anyway, it looks like a lot of Pfizer's line is free to the unemployed, but for
existing customers only.
Most drug companies have pro-bono programs for certain necessary drugs, often
limiting it to low-income individuals (like 2.5x poverty level on last year's
income tax return). This new Pfizer program allows you to become 'low income'
the instant your regular income ends, instead of waiting for you to file a low
income tax return.

I'm going to blow my mind and again stick up for Microsoft. Its simply not
their fault that Toshiba doesn't make XP drivers... Thats like blaming MB
because your 240D doesn't support the hydrogen economy...

As for Linux as a newbie I'd suggest something more like Ubuntu or Mepis rather
than Debian as you'll find them more user-friendly where Debian is more
nerd-centric...
I've been using Mepis at home for about 4 years now and have been very pleased.
The only issue I've had is that the latest version (8) tries to use IPV6 by
default which my DSL modem doesn't support. Its an easy setting to change
though. If you try it and it goes to webpages very slowly drop a note and we
can fix you right up.

Well, Microsoft has just about done it - forced me to join the Linux
army.  I can install a free OS called Debian (there's others, but I know so
little about any so I'm basically throwing a dart) that I thought I'd try.

Since buying a Toshiba with Vista pre-loaded I am more more irritated
that it seems MS deliberately put roadblocks in the way of anyone wishing to
dump Vista and stay with XP.

After repeated attempts to install XP on a new SATA HD, I am on the
verge of giving up and trying to see how well Debian will work with the rest
of my LAN, SW HW.

Does anyone have comments about going to Debian Vs Vista?

In a business environment you need spares. Any amount of downtime is
unacceptable. I always thought it was rather funny that people would
buy guaranteed 4-hour service contracts for their mission-critical
servers. I don't know about you guys, but in my world a 4-hour
downtime would put me out of business. Get the standard
next-business-day service contract and spend the money you saved on a

When the motherboard in your Mac dies you pack it up and go to the Apple

A week later you find out they've ordered the WRONG PARTS so it'll be another

Another reason to use a Mac- every time I've called Apple, I get to

I think you're wrong, if gas prices stay where they are and the economy comes
back I think we'll see a regrowth of the SUV market. People seem to believe
that low cost fuel is some kind of god given right and they should be able to
drive whatever kind of behemoth they want and who cares about the mileage.

As an aside my Ranger got 24mpg on the way to Maine and 21mpg on the way back.
It appears running the AC makes a significant dent in the mpg...

The result of that behavior, along with very poor managment (also
endemic in American companies), is that when fuel prices went up,
people stopped buying huge, poorly made, gas guzzling vehicles, and I
suspect that they will NEVER buy them again.  Not having also
manufactured a vehicle of any kind that customers would choose over a
TOyota or a Honda, instead of a sales slump they got a sales halt,
and down the tubes they went.

The auto makers were propped up for the benefit of the economy and not for
the unions. And to set the record straight, they did not give half the
company to the Union.

The supposed Union ownership is actually not the union but the retirement
plan. The VERBA (Employee Retirement plan) owns part of the company in place
of the company making their commitment to the retirement plan whole and last
I checked, the plan was only 68% funded. This is very high risk to all
retirees future retirees because if the company fails, it takes a major
portion of the retirement plan with it.

Would you be happy if your Employer explained in a staff meeting that you
would loose about 40% of the funds in your 401K plan if they did not
survive The Union and the Employees are not happy about this but it's
another decision that had to be made, it's not any different than the
dealership decision.

Also, everyone involved gave up their share to make this work. My Wife is a
UAW Union worker, one who in your opinion benefited the most from this. Her
part of the concessions were:

She took a $2.00 / hour pay cut.
She lost her COLA (cost of living) adjustment.
She will get no pay raise over the next 4 years.
We have reduced medical benefits. And as a result, the cost of my
appointments medication just increased by $120 / month.

In addition, she did not receive a pay raise over the last 4 years - this
works out to 8 years with a $2.00 / hour pay cut that translates into a much
larger pay cut with inflation! Would you work for someone, anyone, knowing
that you would not get a pay raise in 8 years? Probably not!

Actually its probably not so bad for somebody with some gumption thats willing
to take a job that might be beneath them. Management will remember people who
came in and took initiative to do a good job.

When I landed my tech support position at Pinnacle in 2003 the economy was just
rebounding from that soft recession lite. I worked my ass off for them and
was well rewarded. Pinnacle got bought by Avid in 2005 and again I worked my
ass off. I've done well with Avid and continue to work my ass off... For the
moment the rewards have stopped but I expect them to resume when the economy
does.

Actually its wrong to say the rewards have stopped, the stock is rebounding and
I do own some bought through the employee stock plan. I sold some a couple
weeks ago for a small profit, planning on selling some more soon. Looking to
use it to pay off my timeshare.

[MBZ] So there is due process after all...

2009-05-26 Thread Mitch Haley
Chrysler dealer files adversary proceeding to fight the loss of his franchise. I
thought that was a done deal already, ignoring the dealers' due process rights.
Looks like those who want to fight DO get their day in court.

Mitch.

Chrysler Dealer Says He Was Axed for Not Buying Cars

May 26 (Bloomberg) -- Chrysler LLC pressured dealers to buy cars in the months
before filing for bankruptcy and a Florida dealer claims it is losing the
franchise because it refused, according to court documents.

Jim Boast Dodge Inc. of Bradenton, Florida, asked a New York judge in a May 23
filing to block Chrysler’s attempt to terminate its franchise agreement with the
dealership, saying the automaker is breaking Florida law and doesn’t have a
reasonable business case for the decision.

Between January and March, Chrysler urged U.S. dealers to buy extra cars to
convince the U.S. government of the company’s viability and avoid bankruptcy,
Boast said in the filing. On May 14, Chrysler asked the judge to cancel 789 car
dealership agreements, including Jim Boast’s, who said the dealership bought
four vehicles instead of the 60 it was expected to order.

Chrysler executives threatened dealers who didn’t buy enough cars in a Feb. 13
conference call, saying they would “never forget that those dealers did not help
the company when it desperately needed help,” Boast said in the filing.

“It will be worth finding out,” the dealer said in court papers, “how many other
dealers who failed to adhere to the debtor’s threats have now found themselves
on the chopping block.”

Chrysler won’t comment on specific allegations made by dealers because the
issues will be dealt with by the judge, spokesman Fred Spar said in a telephone
interview.

Reducing Network

The company rejected contracts with about 25 percent of its dealers, who
accounted for about 14 percent of sales, Spar said.

“It’s unfortunate,” he said. Chrysler must reduce its dealers network to win
approval of a plan to sell its assets to a new company it will form with Italian
automaker Fiat, “or else we would have to liquidate all 3,200 dealerships,” he said.

The automaker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy April 30 after a group of 20
secured lenders rejected an offer by the U.S. government that would have paid
them $2.25 billion for $6.9 billion of debt, or 33 cents on the dollar.
Chrysler’s 22 U.S. factories with about 26,800 hourly workers were idled May 1.

Chrysler, in its April 30 filings, listed assets of $39.3 billion and
liabilities of $55.2 billion, making it the fifth- largest bankruptcy in U.S.
history, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News.

Family Business

The Boast family has been a Dodge dealer for almost 70 years, James Keedy,
president of Jim Boast Dodge, said in a court filing.

“In light of the fact Bob Boast Dodge has been performing at very good sales
levels, I do not believe the termination of Bob Boast Dodge is performance
based,” Keedy said. The contract was terminated because the dealer would “not
succumb to the recent threats and extortionist behavior” of Chrysler executives,
he said in the filing. The dealer is also known as Bob Boast Dodge.

A group of 300 Chrysler dealers has also sought to delay the sale of the
automaker’s assets, saying they need more time to fight the cancellation of
their franchise agreements.

A hearing is scheduled June 3 in New York.

The case is In re Chrysler LLC, 09-50002, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern
District of New York (Manhattan)

Re: [MBZ] OT: Retrospect backup problem

2009-05-26 Thread Curt Raymond
Education and enterprise you're talking customers with many (hundreds?) of
machines right?
What about a video production house with maybe 5 machines. How can they afford
2-3 days of downtime?

At one point the company I was working for had a board that in some
circumstances would fry an XW8000's motherboard. The board ran slightly hot and
the XW8000 didn't have the best cooling (better than the MDD Mac though) so if
you did something dumb like not have your AC on all weekend the MB would fry.
We got HP to do MANY replacements on those, oh there was the one XW8200 I put a
card into while the computer was ON. It'd had gone to standby and the fans had
turned off, that fried that motherboard too...
In all cases HP had somebody (not an HP employee but a contractor of sorts) on
site with parts either the next day or the day after that. Alternately they'd
send parts if I said I didn't need a tech. I got so I could do a full MB
replacement (including remembering the screws under the processors) in 30
minutes flat.

A customer (interestingly he was the guy who wrote the screenplay for Get
Shorty) had an early G5 that the thermister went out on so the fans ran full
blast all the time. He took it in and they adjusted it which ment they
unplugged the fans. He took it home and of course it'd shut down after ~5
minutes. So he took it in again and they adjusted it which ment plugging the
fans back in... Finally Apple just gave him a new computer which is what they
should have done in the first place instead of messing around for a week.

For
both education and enterprise customers, Apple does the same thing that
HP does (I worked with both in education and enterprise environments.)

When
something breaks and cannot be resolved by a second tier tech (it
rarely gets to that) they send a prepaid FedEx overnight box to the
customer, both for laptops and desktops.  Turnaround averages about 2-3
business days, not including shipping, at least in the experiences I
had.  Both HP and Apple do this, although HP often just sent a
replacement for desktops and had one of their local service techs pick
up the offending machine.

With Apple, I had the option to take
the machine to the local Genius Bar at the Apple Store, and if I called
ahead I would get priority service.  On more than one occasion with a
critical laptop I got it fixed or replaced on the spot.

HP had
no local service, other than for servers.  And those guys took a good
2-3 days to show up, unless we screamed bloody murder.

It also looks great on the lift.

I still maintain there has to be an aerodynamic component.

Re: [MBZ] Dead battery?

Sure it will, once you get it started.

Got AAA? They'll sell you a battery and install for free in your yard.
Negotiate what you're getting for a battery and how much it'll cost FIRST
though. My wife had one put into the Dakota because she'd left the dome light
on overnight. The guy came, jump started the truck, let it run for 2 seconds,
shut it off and of course it wouldn't restart. He said See, its a bad battery
(2 year old Diehard). Sold her a new monster battery that old one is too small
anyway (geez it'd worked fine for 2 years) for $120.

I was pissed, I'd only paid $90 for the Diehard 2 years ago! I called AAA and
told them how this guy had jacked my wife and I wasn't going to stand for it.
They couldn't refund her money since its a sale through the tow company but
gave us 2 years free AAA. Then I called the Tow company and complained to them
since I checked the part numbers and the new battery wasn't the right model and
the old one was and got 2 free oil changes. So in the end we came out okay. The
battery lasted a year or two until I traded the truck...

1. You are 100% correct.

2. It isn't probably not going to happen.

I am not sure when I came onto this list. Probably about the same time as
you. For better or for worse, this list is sort of like a quaint London pub
or a fraternity house (sorry, that is Banned). Someone is going to make a
comment, someone is going to comment on the comment, and as long as the
police (Kaleb) do not have to break up a fight, everyone is okay next
morning -- perhaps with a headache or two by some participants. As in any
London pub (as if I've ever been to London!) -- ok, let's do Cheers. Sam has
to break up the fights. We have our Norm, we have our Cliff, and we have our
I am somewhere between Frasier and Coach.

Example. I did (truth) about 200 miles round trip yesterday in my 240D and
didn't burn a drop of Mobil 1 15W-50. It was my daughter's university
graduation. Alternator belt squeaked a bit when the engine starts, so I will
have to tighten that tomorrow.

(yawn)

That said, this list is NOT the place to get political and get nasty and
call names. That is what the two flavors of Banned (purgatory and hell) are
for.

[MBZ] 240D oil caps

2009-05-26 Thread Curt Raymond
I have that oil-cap blow by problem on both my 240D and 190D. In both cases the
cars had been largely city driven before I got them and had carboned up
considerably. I think that while the carbon around the rings has gone and the
cars start as I'd expect and run with the power I'd expect that there is still
carbon in the PCV system which leads to too much pressure in the crankcase. The
next easiest leak point is the cap so there it goes. I need at some point to
track that down for which I plan to use my furlough week in August...

I drive one mile each way to work, and do about 60 miles round trip every
weekend to get out of Hooterville. I pour in a quart of 15W-50 every two or
three months.

I have lots of blow-by at the oil filler cap. Current cap is pretty new
(from Rusty). I even tried his suggestion to put in two cork washers, but
couldn't get the cap back on then. I should offer my 240D to Kaleb for $50.

If that's how you want to play it, then fine - but where will the list
be in another decade? At this rate it will end up being the same 5
people rehashing the same politics and driving the same 35 year old
cars.

Any of us are expected to make outlandish posts now and then. When
that happens it's up to the collective wisdom of the list to react in
a responsible manner. That usually means resisting the temptation of
sending out a reply to put someone in their place. Less is more. The
most effective reply is to not reply.

I've said before that the attitudes from Banned bleed over into this
list too often. That does not necessarily mean you swear. It's also
how you treat people. In this case they were treated badly. Sure you
can blame him for starting it - but then you are part of the problem.

To be honest, when I saw that $2/hour post from Tom I wanted to
bitch-slap him for being oblivious to the plight of the majority of
Americans and it suited me just fine that he jumped ship. He's an
idiot and deserved what he got. But if we knew all there is to know
about each other you'd think I'm an idiot and I'd probably think you
are too. Best to keep the conversation here to our known common
interest in my opinion.

I have no problem picking your brain about what's wrong with my car
without knowing that you are elitist, racist, communist, or a 3rd
generation member of NAMBLA. In fact I'd prefer NOT knowing.

When I go to a car show I know to keep conversation about the cars. I
don't go up to a guy showing his 1940 Ford pickup truck and start up a
conversation about gay rights or child abuse within the Catholic
Church. That's common sense and good judgment. We need more of both
 here in my opinion.

Kaleb should not have to play cop and would probably piss off more
people if he did. This list has a personality and a destiny defined by
the actions of it's members. It's up to each of us to behave
 responsibly.

Negotiate what you're getting for a battery and how much it'll cost FIRST
though. My wife had one put into the Dakota because she'd left the dome
light on overnight. The guy came, jump started the truck, let it run for 2
seconds, shut it off and of course it wouldn't restart. He said See, its a
bad battery (2 year old Diehard). Sold her a new monster battery that old
one is too small anyway (geez it'd worked fine for 2 years) for $120.

I was pissed, I'd only paid $90 for the Diehard 2 years ago! I called AAA
and told them how this guy had jacked my wife and I wasn't going to stand
for it. They couldn't refund her money since its a sale through the tow
company but gave us 2 years free AAA. Then I called the Tow company and
complained to them since I checked the part numbers and the new battery
wasn't the right model and the old one was and got 2 free oil changes. So in
the end we came out okay. The battery lasted a year or two until I traded
the truck...

That's the same one I bought from Zipzoomfly last month when there was a $10
rebate. It cost me $84 IIRC when newegg wanted $90.
Now it's $76 without screwing with the rebate. Should have waited to order it, I
didn't get around to formatting it until last weekend anyway.

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009440

The XP SP1 disk I had recognized it as 127GB, so I set it up with a 127GB
partition, then repartitioned it with Mepis after I updated the XP install.

Now I've got 25GB partitions for XP and Mepis, and a 50GB for Vista, and I'll
put all the programs and data on a fourth partition which is about 830GB.

One more weekend and I should have the drive permanently installed in my
computer.

BTW, did I mention that Staples sold me a new Compaq in December with only one
hard drive bay in it, and six slow, outdated USB ports so that I get an error
message every time I plug in my EVDO modem? (you dummy, this device will run
better if you plug it into a proper USB port, says Windows)
My five year old $300 eMachine might not have the processor speed or RAM of the
new Compaq, but it's got faster USB ports and room for 2-3 hard drives. And the
onboard sound was far better on the eMachine.

i needed a new batt in our '85 a few years ago; shopping around,
1-800-Mercedes had a price within a few dollars of the next best price i
could find for the proper size and rated batt. they came out to the
house, tested the old batt, tested the charging system, installed a new
proper MBZ batt and hauled away the old batt and were done in fairly
short order. for the very few dollars i might have saved by installing a
new one myself, it wasn't worth the effort, and i wouldn't have had the
benefit of testing or batt disposal.

cheers!

Delivery and install is free.
Just find out what your local dealer wants for the battery first.
A few years ago, it was something like $110 for a MBZ group 49, as opposed to
$90 for an Interstate, but I think the MBZ may have gone up faster since then.

If they are still under $125, the delivery and install makes it quite the deal.

I was 40 when I got my last degree, but I guess every experience has its own

has tubes in all 4 tires that I put in when I installed them. My Cub Cadet at

one tire but they seem to be of a better quality and the others haven't leaked

under $125, the delivery and install makes it quite the deal.

Anyone know the distance they will likely travel? Is 100 miles

No idea who makes Energizer. My 300SD came with a plain 7 year old Duralast and

after the 2nd time I let the CC kill it. Not bad for two years past warranty. I
replaced it with a Duralast (same series, but this one warranted for 7 years)

Interstate version. I lost track of whether MBZ was selling Varta or Johnson.
Duralast Gold is probably in the same class as Diehard or Interstate. Maybe even
Interstate Megatron for all I know.

By the way, the AGM batteries don't vent acidic gas and promote rust like plain
lead acid do. That might make it worth spending $150 on one. I forget which
brand Marshall used. They are smaller, and it takes some fiddling to make the
cables reach the terminals without putting stress on them.

When did these problems start?

I've had the same Optima Red top for 9 years now, and it works just like
new despite severe abuse- numerous deep discharges, and it has even been
stored discharged. It's also seen a lot of rough roads including
rallycross, and Baja.

I have been amazed by this battery, and would be very disappointed to
find it can't be replaced with one of similar quality when (if?) it ever

Re: [MBZ] 'Nother OT - slimed tires

2009-05-26 Thread Alex Chamberlain
On the subject of Slime, my used riding lawnmower came with a tire
(one of the big ones in back) apparently pre-Slimed by the previous
owner. It was flat at the start of mowing season this year and I
pumped it up, but noticed when I tried to check the pressure that the
valve left green gunk on the fitting on the pressure gauge. This
brings to mind a couple of questions:
- Can you re-Slime tires that have already been Slimed once?
- When do you give up and get new ones already?
- Isn't getting a lawnmower tire on and off the rim supposed to be a
huge pain in the you-know-what?
- Did I ruin my favorite tire pressure gauge by putting it on the
valve stem of a Slimed tire? (I.e. is the gauge now clogged with
Slime and damaged in some way? It still seems to work.)

Friend of mine has three, he trades them all the time and seems to think
it's worth it.  At least two are in Mexico.  I've never been tempted

You are probably safe, I think major problems started about 5 years ago. When
the optima in my jeep failed suddenly at a restaurant (shorted cell) I went
home and put the old optima that had been sitting on a concrete floor for a
year or two and it started the jeep just fine.

When did these problems start?

I've had the same Optima Red top for 9 years now, and it works just like
new despite severe abuse- numerous deep discharges, and it has even been
stored discharged. It's also seen a lot of rough roads including
rallycross, and Baja.

I have been amazed by this battery, and would be very disappointed to
find it can't be replaced with one of similar quality when (if?) it ever
dies.

Practically new :)
The Cub at the house is a '64 model 70, the one at camp is a '67 model 72
although it has a rebuilt engine. I suspect the worst tires are ones that have
to live outside all the time and the best are ones that get washed off after
every mowing. As with everything the more care you put in the better they last.

The rubber in most lawnmower tires is so cheap I think its probably
a necessity on one more than a year or two old. The Cub Cadet on the
farm (which is a Garden Tractor, no mower, has a cultivator, disc
harrow and grader blade) has tubes in all 4 tires that I put in when I
installed them. My Cub Cadet at home (which is also a Garden Tractor
but has a mower and push blade) has FF in one tire but they seem to be
of a better quality and the others haven't leaked yet...

Mine is a wheel horse, at least 20 years old, and AFAIK has the orginal
tires.  Only the one leaked, until I slimed it.  The others are in good
shape.

Re: [MBZ] 'Nother OT - slimed tires

2009-05-26 Thread Curt Raymond
For me once the tire is so bad the FF doesn't help it the rest of the mower is
falling apart so bad its time to spend another $50...
I'm an absolute bottom feeder for mowers. The mower at camp is a
Montgomery-Ward Powr-Kraft that I got for free from my father-in-law for
getting it out of his garage. Its a poor mower but the motor on it is
fantastic. I'm now on the lookout for a better mower of the same size class
(38 cut, 10 or 11hp) that I can transfer the motor into. I don't expect (or am
willing) to pay more than $25.

At home I've got an early '60s ('64? I forget) Snapper RER (rear engine rider)
that was my great uncles that has zero compression. I bought another with a bad
carb (but loads of compression) for $25 and I intend to move the motor over.
The newer one is dumb looking and has no class, the old one is awesome looking
but beat. The motor, tires and drive disk from the new one will make it a good
mower. I like the RERs because they're stupid simple.

Re: [MBZ] Dead battery?

I did some searching online and found that Optima was a small Swedish
company that was sold in the summer of 2000 (probably after my battery
that still works was made) to Wisconsin based Johnson Controls, Inc.

It's hard to imagine that US ownership would reduce the quality of a
fine Swedish product! *cough* Volvo *cough* Saab *cough* excuse me I
seem to be choking on the concept of suddenly reducing quality of a
prestigious brand to increase short term profit...

Yeah, but if they are leaking with slime inside I don't know if you can improve
on that without cleaning the slime out and getting an inner tube.

- When do you give up and get new ones already?

When they split open and the inner tube suffers a hernia.

- Isn't getting a lawnmower tire on and off the rim supposed to be a
huge pain in the you-know-what?

Leave it in the hot sun for several hours and use tire irons, not screwdrivers.
I can usually put them back on with hands/feet.

Sounds like you haven't gotten it inside the bourdon tube (or pressure sensor if
electronic) yet. Can you unscrew the tip and clean it?

I can't remember if Marshall (rest his soul) wanted us to use Red or Yellow.
At any rate, if Optima (Marshall's brand) went downhill, is Orbital still OK?
