Hi, Hans Now I know why XeTeX uses 1-2 minutes to compile a simple document: Each time first-setup.bat runs, it erase the user fontforge cache. So if I compile a document right after updating ConTeXt minimals, XeTeX will automatically run fc-cache to generate the font cache. Today I test a little bit, the time used for fc-cache -r is approximately the xetex's first running time. Next compilation uses about 7-8 seconds, which is reasonable (it first searches the fc cache, then the texmf tree) btw, can we change the type-otf.tex to force mkii to search fonts like iwona and tex gyre in the texmf tree first? True, XeTeX runs fc-cache every now and then, but I didn't manage to figure out when that happens. I would suggest to ask about that on the XeTeX mailing list. ConTeXt has zero influence on that behaviour, except that it could avoid searching via fc. Next compilation uses about 7-8 seconds, which is reasonable (it first searches the fc cache, then the texmf tree) btw, can we change the type-otf.tex to force mkii to search fonts like iwona and tex gyre in the texmf tree first? Iwona? There are lines like \definefontsynonym [Iwona-Regular] [file:Iwona-Regular] [features=default] which means that it first searches on texmf tree, but I suspect that math fonts are being searched via fontconfig first. The way font searching is implemented now ([rm-iwonar] will look for \font\something=rm-iwonar instead of \font\something=rm-iwona = this means searching via fontconfig first; the font is not found there, so it searches in texmf tree further) it is not possible to convince ConTeXt to search in texmf tree first unless Hans changes core macros (the part that has been broken for almost a year). The Xserif hack that has originally been written by Adam Lindsey now reads as: \starttypescript[Xserif][all][name] \definefontsynonym[Dummy] [name:\typescripttwo] [features=default] \definefontsynonym[Serif] [Dummy] This means that [features=default] is hardcoded into the syntax. I didn't try it, but to make something work the way you would like it, one would need to modify the hack into something like this: \definefontsynonym[Dummy] [name:\typescripttwo] [\typescriptthree] (but this would need some thinking, I do not suggest doing this modification right away even if it works). Re: [NTG-context] XeTeX and/or LuaTeX?
It works OK here: \sethebrew test3 \ConTeXt\ הָלַך test4 gives = test4 הָלַך test3 ConTeXt This is the way the macro is meant to be! I guess the tXeTnoC is indeed a result of improper copy-pasting. Unicode works with invisible formatting characters used to control bidirectional typesetting. [LTR: (U+202D); RTL: (U+203D); (U+202C) cancels the effect of the other two] Copy-pasting (@-mailing?) can be a problem since sometimes these characters fall away. The RTL unicode charater is missing from the text underneath so I guess that's the problem. Adriaan. You can probably ask Hans to fix it if it doesn't work properly. And XeTeX can't use certain specials and other types of features Can someone tell me what kind of specials and types of features? I would not bother too much. One of the differences is that XeLaTeX has very good high-level support for changing fonts. That one is missing, but you can still do everything you need. In particular, if you are writing your thesis, those few additional lines that you might need for properly setting the font should not be a problem. XeLaTeX also has some support for OpenType math, but you don't need that. And now on this list there is a lot of talk about LuaTeX and Mark IV. So I wonder: Is it possible to use MarkIV and XeTeX engine at the same time? And if not, why should (or shouldn't) I use MarkIV over XeTeX? Minus of Mark IV: it's a bit unstable; problems are fixed quickly, but it's a bit annoying if your thesis doesn't compile one hour or day before the deadline (when you do the final run before you print the document and of course you have no backup of PDF). You can make sure that this doesn't happen by keeping two versions of ConTeXt installed just in case (one that you update and one that you don't). Plus of Mark IV: it has a very powerful programming language in the background. Fun to use (which could just as well be a minus if you become interested in playing with it or in fixing the problems instead of writing your thesis :) :) :) Very well supported. In case that you don't need advanced MKIV features, you can, at least in theory, use the same source to typeset the document with both XeTeX and LuaTeX. For documents that are not too complex this is what I usually do. If I stumble across a problem in one engine, there's still a chance that the other engine will work properly. Hi, Jonathan: Thanks for the analysis! Now I replace the trk with TRK, and xetex output is right. In the LuaTeX case, I don't think *any* ligatures are enabled by default, so the language is irrelevant; notice that there's no ff ligature in your output either, even though this should be expected. Re: [NTG-context] fullpage and XeTeX typescript
Concerning the second question, the following is the reply from Hans months ago to me. I think Hans is right, since fonts are quite complex, but it *will* be a lot easier if we have that mechanism since this mechanism will be applicable to most fonts. If there are fonts that fontconfig cannot handle well, then the user can define them in the old way.: Yue Wang wrote: last question: is it possible to add fontconfig-like interface? if I define to use minion famaily, then all the alternatives are automatically defined like xetex? i never looked into that interface so i cannot comment on it, but i've learned my lessons with fonts ... they are all different and any 'clever automated mechanism' will at some point fail, so then one ends up with exeptions; when defining a document style one needs to know the font, its usage (what variants, styles, etc) and often also it slimitations (font feature are not that well defined and fonts might have incomplete implementations) the best one can do is make a typescript (or a collection, as with tex gyre which tries to be consistent over the whole range) that implements a definition and even then, a different version of a font (i mostly use commercial fonts and font ABC may have different implementations) may hav edifferent properties; also, there is not one good usage (typescript combination) of a specific font, esp now that we have many features actually, talking about features, you need to keep in mind that even when you define a specific instance, applying such an instance to a whole document might fail because some features may not cover the whole possible set of combinations of characters (take frac as an example) and so usage demands knowlegde eventually we may have a set of predefined typescripts that cover most system fonts On Wed, Dec 24, 2008 at 1:44 AM, Mohamed Bana mbana.li...@googlemail.com wrote: hi, 1. what's the equivalent of the \usepackage{fullpage} for ConTeXt? 2. it would be convenient if LuaTeX supported typescripts like XeTeX does instead of having to define font synonyms, e.g., \definetypeface[mainface][rm][Xserif][Warnock Pro] \definetypeface[mainface][ss][Xsans][Cronos Pro] \definetypeface[mainface][tt][Xmono][Inconsolata][default]%[rscale=0.9] % use only for Monaco %\definetypeface[mainface][mm][Xmath][palatino] \definetypeface[mainface][mm][math][palatino][default]%[encoding=texnansi] \setupbodyfont[mainface, 13pt] ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___ ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Dnia Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 04:28:35AM -0500, [EMAIL PROTECTED] napisa#322;(a): ConTeXt peaple always have used to say that ConTeXt is better than LaTeX. I have been recieving emails from CoNTeXt list and it seems that ConTeXt has heaps of bugs. LaTeX rocks...! Sorry, but I just can't resist a joke: what you call a bug in ConTeXt world is called a feature in LaTeX. And to be more serious: I think I was rather fair in my previous post on the difference between (plain) TeX and ConTeXt. Also, LaTeX is frozen in some sense: the latest news on the LaTeX project site comes from 2005, IIRC. So the LaTeX core (or kernel) is very stable (and, one has to admit, has very few bugs - and very limited features...). And LaTeX packages are quite a jungle. But still: there are lots of them which are very stable (or frozen), and some which are under constant development (pgf, for instance). Also, LaTeX documents are (usually) much simpler than ConTeXt documents, so it is much easier to have few bugs - there is less room for complex interactions (aside from package clashes, which happen from time to time). So if you want a stable document preparation and markup system with a large userbase, though sometimes limited functionality (try to do a two-column enumerate in LaTeX automatically, something like: 1) ...3) ... 2) ...4) ... without resorting to general multicolumn hackery - and the multicol package, which is not entirely free!), then yes, LaTeX is better. And if you want some features _not_ present in LaTeX or you need to typeset _really_ complex documents (complex in terms of layout, for example), or your documents are not scientific papers then ConTeXt is probably better. Re: [NTG-context] XeTeX, Adobe Garmond dash, quotes, etc.
Fontforge shows no ligatures for Adobe Garamond; however, it does show ligatures for the Tallys fonts. So that probably explains why there are no ligatures. However, the font has a lot of kerning pairs, but I don't seem to be able turn those on/off with the \definefontfeature directive as I could do in the Tallys font. And back to the original problem, en dash, em dash, quotes that work in other fonts don't work here. I can use \emdash, \endash, \quotesingle, etc., but this creates more work when you get text from an author and is more prone to error. So is this a font problem? I tried prepending name and it didn't work. I also tried file:marafont, but that didn't work either. Your code yesterday was great and I have not tried to plug in the mara font into a typescript. Re: [NTG-context] XeTex Mara Font
Is the colon at the end of the name a problem? No, the message says the problem is with the space character, but it is of little concern here (XeTeX doesn't use PostScript font names at all). Is it the font from http://www.perry.com/disney/indy/marafont.html? It seems to have quite a number of other problems actually (xdvipdfmx protests heavily when I try loading it with plain XeTeX). You could try saving it again from FontForge, and installing that modified font (you of course need to uninstall the original one from your system, or more problems will likely happen). While doing so, you can of course modify whatever seems suspicious (like the trailing colon, etc.).
