[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Dovekies

2021-01-16 Thread akmirth
We saw a total of nine Dovekies from the West End jetty at Jones Beach today
between 2:00 and 2:30. All were flying in the direction from the channel
towards the ocean or to Point Lookout. Two landed close to the jetty providing
pretty neat views.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End now open for bird watching

2020-08-12 Thread Lisa Wollerstein

I’ve been emailing back and forth with George Gorman, Regional Director of NYS
Parks, and Jeffrey Mason, Park Director of Jones Beach regarding the confusion
on whether or not we are permitted to bird at West End.

West End is now authorized for birdwatching. You must show binoculars at the
toll booth and stay out of any restricted areas.

Attached is a copy of his email If you have any issues.

Happy migration!

The flatten area by the fisherman's road was use of sand for the
construction of the new nature and energy building being built at West End
2. At the present time there are no plans for turbine support building at
Jones Beach State Park.

The sand that was dug out from the site by the coast guard station was used
in construction of the new education center. I learned that it always was
the intention to remove that sand, but I agree, the parks did a very poor
job at communicating to the public.

There are no plans to run the offshore cable or any support structures
through Jones Beach. Parks is well aware there would be massive opposition.

They are not using the building for a drive through, they have set up tents
in the lot. I am sure if you Google search it, you will see what has been
set up.

How? You drive into the parking lot to the test station, get tested leave and
the parking lot. It’s a drive through like McDonalds or Dairy Barn.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Brown Pelican (Yesterday's)

2019-08-09 Thread Steve Walter
I guess the Brown Pelican is long gone. All that remain are memories and
pictures. If anyone is interested, I uploaded a couple of yesterday’s pix to my
web site (which was in need of an update) -- http://stevewalternature.com/ .
The pelican did get a lot closer for later visitors.

As noted by Doug F. on another forum, the three Common Loons in the Jones Beach
boat basin are interesting to look at – different than typically seen around
here. So I did make a point of photographing them, as I did of the equally
cooperative Black Scoters and Common Eider. Yea, a typical August day at Jones
Beach.

Throw in two Royal Terns that flew in and flew out.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2018-11-20 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (SY Schiff) flushed a SRARP-SHINNED HAWK as we entered the
road into the parking lot. We checked out the bar at the Coast Guard marina on
a dreary, overcast morning. Lots of birds until a PEREGRINE FALCON made a pass
and they all flew off. Three MARBLED GODWIT continue. Others included
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, DUNLIN, SANDERLING, 7 RED KNOT and a pair of 3rd or 4th
year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Lots of DOUBLE-CREASTED CORMORANT but no
Oystercatchers.

Driving over to West End #2, we walked down to the ocean. On the beach we found
another pair (or maybe the same ones from the bar) LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
They were disrupted by the same or another PEREGRINE FALCON. It flew by us and
landed close by on some debris on the upper beach. Great photo op. The water
was full of BLACK and SURF plus 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. A steady stream of
NORTHER GANNETS and gulls moved through from east to west along with numerous
gulls. The gulls included a few LAUGHING GULLS.

Returning to the car, a group of 3 dozen SNOW BUNTINGS flew over the swale and
over our heads in the parking lot. Also a pair of NORTHERN HARRIERS were
cruising over the dunes. Nice end to the birding day

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach West End

2018-10-23 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) started at the Coast Guard hedgerow looking for
sparrows. Birds to look at but only WHITE-THROATED, WHITE-CROWNED and SONG. A
MARBLED GODWIT continues on the bar with a hundred AMEERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS;
BLACK and SURF SCOTERS are still in the water.

We drove over to the east exit of West End #2 lot and found the 2 VESPER
SPARROWS reported. On the beach were 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. NORTHERN
GANNETS were plunging into the water, always a great thing to watch.

YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS are everywhere and a steady stream of TREE SWALLOWS
were moving through. There are a number of NORTHERN FLICKERS in the air and on
the lawns.

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach West End

2018-10-19 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I(Sy Schiff) found Ken Feusel at the east end of the Coast Guard
hedgerow photographing an empidonax flycatcher. A very interesting bird with
white throat and semi-tear drop eye ring. ID will be a challenge.
Focus was on the flycatcher, but we managed to see PALM, PINE, MAGNOLIA ,
CHESTNUT-SIDED AND YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS Plus COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. There were
a lot of birds in the air moving through, but no blackbirds. Some 5-600 TREE
SWALLOWS were milling about over the median with a steady stream moving through
along with a number of NORTHERN FLICKERS.
We walked down to the inlet and checked the bar across the inlet. We managed to
make out oystercatchers, 145 FORSTER’S TERNS and seven (7) MARBLED GODWITS.
This apparently where the latter feed when they’re not on the bar by the marina.
At the turnaround, it was mostly quiet but we managed some PURPLE FINCHES.
There was a scattering of hawks moving through all morning.

The JB West End Ash-throated Flycatcher was being seen on the east bound

minutes ago. Bird was staying low due to the high wind. (A Mockingbird
chased it into the median brush.)

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End White Crowned Sparrows, warblers (today)

2017-09-23 Thread Tyler Goldstein
I've been here before sunrise and have seen lots of activity already. Lots
of warblers including several Blackburnians, Black Throated Greens and
Blues, Bay Breasted, and a Worm Eating. 2 White Crowned Sparrows at the
turnaround. Also saw a warbler that I couldn't identify. It looked like a
Black Throated Green but didn't have a black throat (at the Coast Guard
hedgerow). I will try to relocate it and get a photo, Great day to be out
birding!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2016-11-26 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach West End 26 Nov

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) went to look for the Longspur reported. Upon
arriving at the Coast Guard Station parking lot, we were alerted to a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK. We walked down the road toward the turnaround, looking into the
median where the bird was reported. We spotted the raptor in the large
deciduous tree in the middle. Nice scope views and distance photos from the road

Returning to our cars, we drove to West End #2.and walked down the swale. A
large flock of HORNED LARKS was feeding, but no Longspur.

A SNOWY OWL had been reported on the beach yesterday, so we turned towards the
jetty. No luck by us or others converging on the beach, but we did turn up a
flock of about 75 SNOW BUNTINGS, Meanwhile some one spotted the owl in the
opposite direction. We looked, we saw, and called it a successful morning
birding.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Shorebirds

2016-07-21 Thread Robert Taylor
Was at the ponds at Jones Beach West until 1:30 - lots of shorebirds: short
billed dowitchers, both yellowlegs, semi plovers and sandpipers as well as
the continuing Stilt and Pectoral Sandpipers. (west and east side
respectively) A NYC birder had reported hearing a possible Least Bittern
yesterday but I could not locate one.

When I returned to check out the coast guard sandbar, no shorebirds were
present - too many vacationers scared them off. Saw a flycatcher -
assuming Willow by the restroom building.

locations without luck but finally came across it at the turnaround. It
appeared on the lawn on both sides of the road.adjacent to the shrubbery to

all disappeared for a while after a Sharp-shinned hawk passed over.

Today was a fair flight day with a dozen or more MERLIN and SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS
coming through. A male RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was among the migrating Flickers.

Other birds:-- a number of EASTERN PHOEBE, lots of TREE SWALLOW, a CEDAR

On the spit were Skimmers, Oystercatchers, Sanderlings & BB Plovers, and some
Forster's Terns were out near the inlet

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End - Multiple Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Black Tern, Jetty peeps

2015-08-26 Thread Timothy Healy
I spent the last hours of daylight on the shore at Jones Beach West End
today. It was not intended as a birding trip, but I still managed to spy
some interesting visitors. The local breeders were out in force, with
several young Piping Plovers and Least Terns observed and Common Terns
still ferrying fish. Large resting flocks of Sanderlings and plenty of
feeding individuals were present, along with a few Black-bellied Plovers.
Down by the jetty, I spotted a non-breeding plumage Black Tern, obviously
dark-backed and short-tailed with a white forehead, flying around. A walk
out the jetty turned up several Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers along
with a Semipalmated Plover and a Spotted Sandpiper. Walking back to the lot
along the surf I encountered three(!) Lesser Black-backed Gulls. All were
2nd or 3rd cycle birds, with brown mixed into their dark slate-grey
upperparts. They were markedly smaller than the nearby Great BB's and
Herring Gulls, which provided an easy comparison to confirm my ID
suspicions.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End: tagged Semi-palmated Sandpiper

2015-07-31 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I was by the coast guard station from around sunrise to 7am- lots of
shorebirds including Oystercatchers, groups of Willetts, semi palmated
sandpipers and plovers, and sanderlings. One of the semi-palmated
sandpiper had a yellow tag on its leg- took a photo but lighting was bad
and couldnt make out the letters/ numbers - will upload and enhance the
photo later so I can try to report it.

I briefly checked the vernal ponds for the Red Phalarope- only checked the
western pond cause I had to get to work- just curious if anyone has seen it
after my sighting I posted on ebird? (reported 8:00pm June 24th)

On a sidenote, weather was pleasant and didnt have any mosquitos or gnats
at all.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End: Red Phalarope-No, other shorebirds - Yes

2015-07-26 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I went looking for the Red Phalarope this morning starting around sunrise -
I checked each of the west end ponds but did not see it - a lot of them
have grown over and Canada Geese and Robins have moved in - still other
shorebirds were present: Semi-Palmated Sandpipers/ Plovers, Killdeer, Least
Sandpipers and a few Sanderlings. When leaving, saw a Horned Lark on the
dunes.

I also checked the area by the Coast Guard Station but was not there either
- what I did find instead were a lot of shorebirds on the sandbar -
Semi-Palmated Sandpipers/ Plovers, Least Sandpipers, Sanderlings (some in
beautiful plumage), Piping Plover, Spotted Sandpiper, Short Billed
Dowitchers and at least 3 Red Knots. Number of all shorebirds on the
sandbar were in the hundreds - 1000 is a good estimate. (I left around
7:30am.)

Good shorebirding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach west end spring arrivals plus

2015-03-27 Thread David Klauber
Not much that hasn't been seen elsewhere recently, but a nice mix of new
arrivals and lingering birds this afternoon between 2 and 3:30. There were some
Meadowlarks - one at the turnaround near the police station with Killdeer, and
another 2 at the far entrance to the WE2 lot-, a good variety of sparrows - 1
each Fox, Savannah, Swamp,White-throat, and Tree, Field (2), many Song and some
juncos-, at least 2 Pine Warblers, Sapsucker, many Flickers & RW Blackbirds,
Cowbirds, small groups of Tree Swallows flying west, and a couple of Eastern
Phoebes. A Horned Grebe in near breeding plumage was very close to the docks,
giving good views.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2014-10-12 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach West End 12 Oct

A birdy morning with lots to look at and an interesting mix of species. This is
a composite list from the 7 or 8 of us enjoying the company and birding
together. Raptors included OSPREY, NORTHERN HARRIER, SHARP-SHINNED AND COOPER'S
HAWK, MERLIN AND PEREGRINE FALCON plus a fly over GREAT BLUE HERON.

Beside the lingering 100+ AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, there were only DUNLIN and
RUDDY TURNSTONE. Three ROYAL TERNS joined them on the bar before flying off.
The 7 LESSER BLACK-BACK GULLS reported by Peter Post seemed to be 3 first year
and 4 second year. Only one of the ones that were standing had yellowish legs.

The NORTHERN FLICKERS were joined by a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (rare on the
beach), a few BROWN CREEPERS and lots of EASTERN PHOEBE, RUBY and
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. Some RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES continue in the pines.

The few VIREOS included RED-EYED, WHITE EYED and BLUE-HEADED. Still many TREE
SWALLOWS, but the enormous thousands of last week have moved on. Lots of
warblers of the YELLOW-RUMPED persuasion but only a few PALM and PINE with a
single BLACK-THROATED BLUE.

There were 8 species of sparrow including CLAY-COLORED and WHITE-CROWNED plus
EASTERN TOWHEE, DARK-EYED JUNCO, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE,
EASTERN GOLDFINCH and a few PINE SISKIN.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End: Ring Necked Pheasant

2014-05-03 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

Normally I don't post multiple times during one day, but every time I was
out it was an unplanned last minute thing...I drove through the West End
with my family before sunset just for the sake of taking a leisurely drive
- I just happened to bring my camera and binoculars in the car...saw a Ring
Necked Pheasant cross from the median to the dunes on the west end (my
daughter yelled out Roadrunnner!) a Baltimore Oriole, and 2 terns flying
over a bridge - I was driving, couldn't safely get an ID.

Planning a big day out next week - hopefully will find some top shelf
migrants.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End, Massapequa Preserve Part 2

2014-04-06 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

Went back to Jones Beach West End and Masspequa Preserve today- same as
yesterday except there were ~10 Black Bellied Plovers and some Dunlin on
the sandbar by the Coast Guard Station. There were ~ 20 female Brown
Headed Cowbirds mixed in with a flock of Starlings on the median. Also saw
my FOS Snowy Egret on Green Island.

At Massapequa Preserve, there seemed to be more photgraphers/ bird watchers
on the scene than birds.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End, Massapequa: Phoebes, Cedar Waxwings, Horned Grebes

2014-04-05 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I stopped by the Jones Beach West End today - lots of Robins, Starlings,
and Red-winged Blackbirds. There were a decent amount of Flickers and 4
Killdeer were in the median by the booth. Also saw 2 Phoebes. At the
Coast Guard Station, there were at least 6 Horned Grebes - some with great
plumage. Common Loons and Long Tailed Ducks were still present. By the
Coast Guard gates, a group of ~10 Cedar Waxwings landed in the trees.

At Massapequa Preserve, there wasn't anything notable besides the usual
suspects. Saw a pair of Brown Headed Cowbirds there and a pair has been
hanging out by the bird feeder in my yard all day.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach: West End II. Birds and a lifer mammal.

2014-03-24 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
A walk with Ed Becher today from the coast guard station through the center
median, down to the shoreline and along the inlet produced a nice selection
of birds and a lifer mammal in the form of an adult male Gray Seal. The
usual suspects were in evidence with highlights being a lingering pair of
Eastern Meadowlarks between the entrance and exits of the West End II
parking lot north end. Harlequin ducks at the end of the jetty. Large
Dunlin flock with 50+ Black-bellied Plover mixed in along the inlet jetty
and 5 Piping Plovers where the jetty ends. A Red-necked Grebe sporting some
color showed in the bay behind the coast guard station. A Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker made a brief appearance in the parking lot at the coast guard
station. The high light of todays walk was furred not feathered in the form
of a male Gray Seal seen just east of the jetty and watched for 20 minutes
as it drifted west towards the inlet.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End: ducks and Tree Swallow

2014-03-10 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I was at Jones Beach this morning - despite the flurries, saw a lot of
birds. At the Coast Guard Marina, saw Red Breasted Mergansers, Scaup,
Horned Grebes, Long Tailed Ducks, Brant, Red Throated and Common Loons.

On the median saw about a dozen Robins, Flicker, Red Winged Blackbirds, and
Common Grackles. The flurries impeded looking for the Shrike, but saw a
single Tree Swallow fly over the West End 2 lot.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Re: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End/ Meadowbrook Parkway Sunday: Rough Legged Hawk, Blackbirds (not Rusty)

2014-02-24 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Yes, there is a very good reason they cannot be juvenile Common Grackles:
Common Grackles do not even retain their dull brown juvenal plumage into
the first fall. Here is a good rule: if you are in or near a salt marsh and
you see a mixed flock of Common Grackles and Rusty Blackbirds, you have
made a misidentification. [?]

RE: [EXTERNAL] [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End/ Meadowbrook Parkway Sunday: Rough Legged Hawk, Blackbirds (not Rusty) (UNCLASSIFIED)

2014-02-24 Thread Joe DiCostanzo
To further elaborate on Angus' post of yesterday, the "warm, brown" color of
these birds is a much better fit for female Boat-tails than Rusty
Blackbirds. Winter Rustys tend towards gray, rather than brown and even in
fall birds which have a lot of brown to them, the brown color is on the
feather edges giving them a scalloped look rather than the uniform coloring
of the birds in your photos. Additionally, most Rustys should show a fairly
prominent yellow eye rather than the dark eyes on most of these birds. Also
fall/winter Rustys would generally show some sort of supercilium, which
appears to be totally lacking in your birds. I also agree with Angus that
the birds which best show their bills in profile have a bill that looks much
more grackle like than the shorter bill of a Rusty. I can understand the
difficulty some are having with the tail length, but first, remember, female
Boat-tails have shorter tails than males and second, immatures, which many
of these birds may be, tend to have shorter tails than adults. Finally, as
Angus also points out the location/habitat for these birds is exactly where
you would expect to find a flock of Boat-tailed Grackle on Long Island in
winter and is all wrong for Rusty Blackbird and the number of birds you
report might well be unprecedented for Long Island in midwinter.

Hi Matthew,

I have to admit I'm not an expert an Icterids - I'm mostly a duck kinda guy.
I've been getting differences of opinion between Boat Tailed Grackles and
Rusty Blackbirds. The first day most people were saying Rusty Blackbirds,
now most people are saying Boat Tailed Grackles.

I've seen Boat Tailed Grackles before and seeing these bunch of blackbirds I
thought they seemed different. I can post more pics when I get home later.
Do you have an idea what they are? At this point, I'm going by what more
experienced birders are telling me (and I appreciate the help)

They look like Rusty Blackbirds (forgot to say that in earlier post) based on
the tails.

Boat-tailed tails are almost the same length as the body. Boat tailed Grackles
are 16' and Rusty Blackbirds are 9". This is hard to tell from photos but that
is almost twice the size. If it was larger than a robin it would be a
Boat-tailed, same size as a American Robin then a common, smaller than a
American Robin then a Rusty.

Hi Matthew,

I have to admit I'm not an expert an Icterids - I'm mostly a duck kinda guy.
I've been getting differences of opinion between Boat Tailed Grackles and Rusty
Blackbirds. The first day most people were saying Rusty Blackbirds, now most
people are saying Boat Tailed Grackles.

I've seen Boat Tailed Grackles before and seeing these bunch of blackbirds I
thought they seemed different. I can post more pics when I get home later. Do
you have an idea what they are? At this point, I'm going by what more
experienced birders are telling me (and I appreciate the help)

Thanks,

They look like Rusty Blackbirds (forgot to say that in earlier post) based on
the tails.

Boat-tailed tails are almost the same length as the body. Boat tailed Grackles
are 16' and Rusty Blackbirds are 9". This is hard to tell from photos but that
is almost twice the size. If it was larger than a robin it would be a
Boat-tailed, same size as a American Robin then a common, smaller than a
American Robin then a Rusty.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End and Point Lookout

2014-01-14 Thread Carney, Martin
Yesterday, Mike Kravatz and I birded Jones Beach West End 2 and Point
Lookout with marvelous results: about halfway between the West End 2
parking lot and the inlet, we saw 2 Snowy Owls (guided by a number of
people); a flock of about 50 Snow Buntings was at the Nature Center; the
first jetty (westernmost) offered 10 Sanderlings, 4 Purple Sandpipers, 15
Common Eider, lots of Long-tailed Ducks, 2 Horned Grebes and, most
fantastically, 7 Harlequin Ducks, right in close on the eastern side of the
jetty. Twas amazing. They're doing work so we could not get to the other
jetties, but we were profoundly content with our sightings. Happy
birding...Martin Carney

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End- Shrike, Snowy Owls

2013-12-02 Thread JGIUNTA746
Dec. 2, 2013

After some searching I found the N. Shrike at 3:30 in the Fisherman's
Parking lot just past the Coast Guard station.

After talking to people in the west end of Jones Beach I believe that
there are at least 6 Snowy Owls in the Jones Beach/Point Lookout area. Some
owls were found east of west end 1 while others were west of west end 2. The
easiest view of an owl was the one perched on top of the last and tallest
building in Point Lookout. It was on top of the dome cover for the
telescope. From there the Snowy had a complete view of the entire area.

Best

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End/ Point Lookout: ducks, horned grebe

2013-11-29 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I visited the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station this afternoon - besides
Brant and double-crested comorants, saw about a dozen Red-Breasted
Mergansers inside the sandbar area (my FOS) and a few small flocks of Long
Tailed Ducks on the outside of the sandbar. (Also saw a seal by Field 10)

*Just a FYI that I did not attempt to find the reported Shrike.

I stopped by Point Lookout and saw common loons scattered around, a mixed
flock of common eider and black scoter, numerous sanderlings and dunlin, a
lone white winged scoter flying in the distance, and a horned grebe (all
between the eastern-most restroom building and the inlet)

Good birding,
Rob

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End: Brant and Hermit Thrush

2013-11-03 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I was by the Coast Guard Station around 1pm checking for wintering ducks/
late shorebirds - not much going on with that - saw lots of Brant, (huge
flock flying in), Canada Geese, Gulls and Comorants. (I noticed that the
"spit" can be hopping one minute and be totally dead later on.) Stopped by
the last U-turn by the "pine trees" and saw a large flock of redwing
blackbirds 30+, a flicker trying to chase them away and a hermit thrush
going between the grass and shrubs.

Posting pics soon to my blog http://longislandbirding.blogspot.com/.

Good birding,
Rob

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End 10/5

2013-10-05 Thread Rick
A couple of interesting birds from Jones Beach West End 2 (western median
strip), visited with Emily Peyton.

Didn't seem very birdy, but as happens during hawk migration, passerines
were lurking in the scrub.

Highlights:

Several Merlins hunting and/or migrating

4-5 Palm Warblers

2 Blue-headed Vireos

Both kinglets

One imm. Red-headed Woodpecker (far west end median)

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Report...

2013-09-15 Thread Andrew Baksh
Resisting the urge to bird some of my local parks, I instead opted for some
barrier beach birding.

My first and last stop was at Jones Beach where I birded with Tom Burke and
Gail Benson for most of the morning into the afternoon. The highlights were:

Adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, seen in the median just after the entrance to the
Coast Guard Station before it disappeared and was never re-found again as far
as I know.

DICKCISSEL, skillfully picked out in flight by Tom Burke during the early
morning hours when the morning flight was cooking (the bird never put down
although at one point it appeared it might do so).

COMMON NIGHTHAWK, found by Dave Klauber as he almost stepped on it resting on
the ground in the median.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, found by Tom Burke and Gail Benson, it hung around near
the 1st exit from the West End II parking lot providing a few of us with very
nice looks but then disappeared and was not seen again well into the afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA VIREO, one possibly two as Tom Burke and Gail Benson found one
near the same area as the Clay Colored and then Sam Janazzo, with Dave Klauber
might have had another or the same bird in the median across from where Tom and
Gail had theirs.

As far as warbler activity, one could easily be fooled if you drove the circle
and listened and looked for birds. You had to get out and do a little "ground
and pound" to get the birds but they were there feeding quietly in the median
although NOT in any significant numbers.

The warbler list includes but not limited to (since others may have seen
additional species), the following.

Black-throated Green
Black-throated Blue
Magnolia
Northern Parula
Ovenbird (seen by others)
Black and White
American Redstart
Common yellowthroat
Prairie
Cape May
Prairie
Palm (both eastern and western)
Pine
Yellow
Northern Waterthrush (picked out in flight by Tom Burke by its chip note)

The presence of Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird, Least Flycatcher, Eastern
Wood-Pewee, Red-eyed Vireo, Swainson's Thrush among the other regular birds
added to the overall bird activity in the area.

Sparrow activity was almost non existent save for the CLAY-COLORED, Song and a
few Savannah's, the latter found later in the afternoon.

As far as flight movement, there was a steady stream of Tree Swallows all
morning with small numbers of Barn Swallows interspersed in the mix. There
were small numbers of song birds in the mix as well but they mostly appeared to
keep on moving and did not put down.

No apparent movement of hawks detected and no shorebirds on the bar to study in
the midst of all the boat activities near the Coast Guard Station.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2013-07-28 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach Coast Guard Station 28 July

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) spent the morning overlooking the bar in front of
the marina. As the tide increased, small numbers of shorebirds arrived till
there were in excess of a hundred. The mix included a dozen Willet, both
Semipalmated Plover and Sandpiper, a few Least Sandpiper, Sanderling with some
still in bright breeding plumage and Short-billed Dowitchers.

We watched Common Terns fishing and then feeding young with their catches.
Other terns included Least Tern, a GULL-BILLED TERN hawking insects above the
extensive low tide bar and an adult and young ROYAL TERN that dropped in
momentarily until spooked by a pair of youngsters who landed on the island by
floating raft.

Others included the 4 common gull species, fly by Black Skimmer and over flying
Osprey and Peregrine Falcon. The 16 Black Scoters continue.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2013-04-04 Thread Tim Dunn
A quick spin through Jones Beach West End today at 3pm between work
appointments revealed 4 1st year White-crowned Sparrows by the Coast Guard
station hedgerow, along with 2 Juncos, 2 Song Sparrows and a Chipping Sparrow.
One sharpie was hunting in the area. A breeding plumage Horned Grebe was in the
marina and 3 Am. Oystercatchers were on the spit.

5 Eastern Phoebes were in the median. 5 Horned Larks were near the Nature
Center and 3 pairs of Killdeer were seen. Canada Geese have paired off, 3 good
sized flocks of Brant were feeding (no blacks). No yellow rumps or any other
warblers or kinglets were seen, nor any winter finches/crossbills.

A movie is being made, so the West End 2 lot is currently closed and a large
structure - apparently temporary - has been assembled over most of that lot.
There is also construction continuing at the marina, with a chain link fence
around most of the area.

Thanks,
Tim Dunn

RE: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End and Point Lookout...

2013-02-15 Thread Steve Walter
I've posted pictures of the Razorbills at my web site
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ , since who know when I'll get worthwhile
shots again. They haven't come easy. The flock that Andrew found was far out
in the channel, west of the Coast Guard station. We split up in search of
the Dovekie. I headed toward the fisherman's parking lot and, miraculously,
so did the Razorbill flock, coming all the way across the channel to a
position relatively close to the near shore. There were 5 the whole time I
saw them, so I don't know about Andrew's sixth one. I do know about my
sixth. That one I spotted at Point Lookout later, swimming and diving in the
surf between the two easternmost jetties. I chased after it, hoping that it
might turn the corner into the inlet where the lighting would be better.
It's not just birding. It's an adventure trying to keep pace with a
Razorbill, trying to anticipate where it will surface, and safely hoping up
on rocks with the camera ready. But I did it.

By the way, the Harlequins were inside the inlet (by the houses) when I got
there. After a while, they flew toward the middle jetty, where the stayed
for a half hour or so. As I was leaving, I saw them flying west past the
westernmost jetty. I lost sight of them in sun glare, so I don't know where
they ended up. Conceivably, they could have headed back to Long Beach (or
they could have made a U-turn, for all I know).

In a note related to Doug Futuyma's last post, Lady Crabs may be the reason
for large numbers of loons now in the Jones Beach area. I watched a Common
come up with a crab, while a Herring Gull with one added to my growing list
of food items in my bird photographs.

First the negative report: Last Sunday's GASSHOPPER SPARROW and the GLAUCOUS
GULL reported earlier in the week were no shows today at West End Jones
Beach.

Today, birds were sparse and hard to come by despite a careful search of the
surrounding areas. Highlights included the following: RED and WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were observed in the median as well as flyovers. A total of 7
WWCR and 4 RECR were my tally. Steve Walter, managed to photograph both
species, so opportunities still exits for looks and photos of CROSSBILLS, if
one is lucky enough to find them.

SNOW BUNTINGS, a flock of about 26 observed near the swale. HORNED LARKS,
moving around in two flocks; 8 birds seem to favor the turn around just
before the booth as one exits West End. The rest were scattered near the
gazebo by the Coast Guard Station. RAZORBILLS, 6 seen well in Jones Inlet
looking from the fisherman's trail/road with Steve Walter and Bobby Kurtz.
Steve and Bobby relayed to me a Dovekie was reported in the same area by
another birder; we searched for some time but was unable to find any
Dovekie at the location.

WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 2 immature birds seen by Bobby Kurtz and I near the
Coast Guard Station. KILLDEERS, 2 flying around as they seemed unsettled
with the workers cleaning up at West End II. CEDAR WAXWINGS, 2 birds near
the entrance to the the fisherman's trail. OYSTERCATCHERS, 2 seen loafing
on the bar near the Coast Guard Station during incoming tide. RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD, only one seen today down from the 6 that a number of us saw on
Sunday. At Point Lookout, Bobby Kurtz reported the 6 HARLEQUIN DUCKS that
have been seen intermittently for some time in the area.

Finally, I have noticed that the birds appear to be singing earlier than
usual?? 3 weeks ago, I was startled by a song at Jamaica Bay Wildlife
Refuge. I was perplexed for a moment until it sank in that I was listening
to a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in full song. I have since heard American
Robins, Northern Cardinal and Red-winged Blackbirds singing and heard a
House Finch in full song at the feeders in my backyard this morning. Signs
of an early Spring or is this the result of a wacky weather pattern?

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2012-10-27 Thread sy schiff
Joe Giunta's Brooklyn Botanical Garden birding class visited Jones Beach (27
Oct) starting at the Coast Guard Station. Arriving at high tide, the bar was
covered with lingering AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, BLACK SKIMMER,.BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER, DUNLIN and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT. Also noted were a few Red Knot, a
Sanderling and a Greater Yellowlegs on the far bar. Four common gull species
including a few Laughing Gulls, two ROYAL TERNS and approx. 40 FORSTER'S TERN
were also there. Across the inlet were a half dozen GREAT EGRETS plus a SNOWY
EGRET. A GREAT BLUE HERON was in the reeds on the island.

We were alerted, via the internet by a post from Steve Walter, of a WESTERN
KINGBIRD at West End #2 parking lot. We arrived and scoped the bird before it
flew off. While there, we decided to look at the sparrows around the parking
field edges. We found a VESPER SPARROW at the same spot as reported in last
few days. HORNED LARKS were in the swale near the Concession Building. Walking
to the turnaround, we had a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER among the numerous NORTHERN
FLICKERS, an uncommon bird on the barrier beach. Both PINE SISKIN and AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH were present, the former landing only momentary. YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS continue everywhere.

Lunch was at the Nature Center picnic tables. NORTHERN GANNETS were seen over
the ocean from that spot. The sparrows in the area looked interesting. We found
an additional 3 VESPER SPARROWS among SAVANNAH and SONG SPARROWS along the
parking lot edges and on the grassy patches adjacent. Altogether we had 6
sparrow species for the day.

We stopped by Pt. Lookout on the way home. There were SANDERLING and RUDDY
TURNSTONES by the west jetty and fishermen on top of all three. Species for the
day-50.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2012-10-06 Thread Luke Ormand
This morning I made my first fall venture to the West End of Jones Beach.
Nothing unusual to report - the most unique find for me were several Cedar
Waxwings which I don't recall seeing during past migrations. Merlins were
aplenty - chasing off many birds including a lot of Northern Flickers. I
did see two decent sized flocks of DC Cormorants headed West. Small birds
were flocks of Pine Siskins and American Goldfinches. Ocean Parkway
yielded one beautiful Peregrine perched on a snag.

Photos of some of the birds can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2012-09-24 Thread Chase Cammarota
There was a great movement of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies along the
beaches today. Merlins were snagging dragonflies and snacking on the wing.
Several large groups of swallows (mostly tree with some bank seen) heading
west from robert moses and the ocean parkway lead to a massive swirling
flight of swallows at jones beach. One of the highlights at jones was a
hatching year gray-cheeked type thrush seen along the median near the coast
guard station. The bird had a very plain smooth olive brown face; no
mottling. I did not note any warmer tones in the tail or the primaries,
but it was heavily shadowed while I was viewing it. The bird seemed
smaller than a swainson's thrush that was also seen in the area, but this
is poor evidence in support of Bicknell's. Purple finch, clay-colored,
savannah, white-throated, and dark-eyed junco sparrows were also present.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End-Bald Eagle

2012-08-21 Thread icterus
Jones Beach West End 21 August

After a perusal of the bar at Short Beach Island, a walk through the median and
a return to the marina, an all dark BALD EAGLE flew over coming from the
south at 10:45 AM. The eagle was accompanied be a flock of screaming terns.
It momentarily landed in the phragmites on the island and then took off flying
NE and out of sight, The shorebirds, terns, cormorants and geese had already
irrupted and were gone alerting me to the presence of a large menace before it
arrived.

Some of the birds gradually drifted back. but 15 minutes later, another
irruption. This time the EAGLE came drifting in from the east flying high over
the island and again drifting north. Gradually the birds returned. At
11:30AM, the eagle made a third pass (still accompanied by the terns), again
preceded by a massive irruption of birds.

The 3 Wimbrel seen yesterday were not located today. There were two
GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS in the median today. Land birds were scarce.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End (Nassau Co.) : 5-5-12

2012-05-05 Thread TESSA1
In nearly 4 hours of birding at Jones Beach West End, Andrew Baksh and I
tallied a total of 74 species, with a few nice highlights. The day began
(7:00 AM) at the sandbar, seen well from around the Gazebo area where there
were expected numbers of various shorebirds, including a few Semipalmated
Sandpipers (a bit early), 32 Red Knot (1 bird may have had a monitoring device
attached to its right leg), and a surprisingly early and very large number
of Black Skimmers (225). This is the earliest date I have on record for
Black Skimmer in our area. A pair of Common Tern were FOS, while a steady
stream of Eastern Kingbirds were mostly moving east throughout, seen and heard
especially around the median totaling 25-30 birds was interesting. A bit
of an oddball was a late Golden-crowned Kinglet, seen at the inner
turnaround (barely vocalizing, appearing rather dull, was probably a first
year
bird). Others from this spot (as the fog component kicked in) were a male
Wilson's Warbler, at least 3 White-crowned Sparrows (some singing) and the top
2 prizes, a female Summer Tanager found and photographed by Andrew and a
nice Yellow-breasted Chat, which began vocalizing nicely for prolonged
periods about an hour after I found it. Both of us had nice looks at each, and
they could remain for tomorrow with plenty of butterflies around to keep
their crops filled.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End, 28-Jan 2012

2012-01-28 Thread Robert M. Waters
Mona and I visited the west end of Jones Beach today, and although the Snowy
Owl wasn't where I had seen him previously (on the w/s of the trail to the
beach that exits the SW corner of the parking lot), the balmy weather and
few birds we saw still made for a fabulous day. At the Short Beach CG
basin, hoards of Dunlin and Brant, with 18 American Oystercatchers, were on
the sandbar. It was quite a site when, spooked by something, they all took
to the air at once (image at the link below). Thankfully they didn't fly
directly overhead. On the ocean side there was a large flock of Dunlin
(1,000 +) resting at the shoreline just east of the jetty, in addition to a
group of 5 Black-bellied Plovers with 9 Sanderlings on the jetty north of
the inlet. Also spotted the Piping Plover and Semipalmated Plover mention
by Ken Feustel and others. For a couple beginners, it wasn't a bad day.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2012-01-26 Thread Sy Schiff
Jones Beach West End, 26 January

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) started at the Coast Guard Marina at high tide.
Among the Brant covering the bar were AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER and DUNLIN. Single AMERICAN and SURF SCOTERS plus LONG-TAILED DUCKS were
in the water.

Driving to West End #2, we passed a flock of TREE SPARROWS on the far
turnaround. IPSWICH SPARROWS were in the SE corner of the lot. HORNED LARKS
flew over. Lots of COMMON and RED*THROATED LOONS were scattered over the inlet
and in the ocean. Walking to the jetty and scanning the ocean as we went (a
scope is required), we saw NORTHERN GANNET, some resting on the water, approx.
75 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and 200 COMMON EIDERS.

But the best was an INCREDIBLE 100+ RAZORBILLS. If there were Scoters, we
would have thought we were at Montauk.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach/West End This Morning (Nassau Co.)

2012-01-23 Thread ken feustel
We spent two hours at West End this morning, scoping Jones Inlet and the
sandbar at the West End Marina. Among a flock of some eight hundred Dunlin were
two basic plumaged Western Sandpipers. On the lawn between the bathrooms and
the gazebo an American Pipit put in a brief appearance. Birds in the Inlet
included a single Red-necked Grebe, a Razorbill, three Harlequin Ducks, and
five Common Eider. The number of Bonaparte's Gulls seemed lower than in recent
days, as did the number of loons.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End, et al., Iceland Gull, Red-shouldered Hawk

2012-01-18 Thread Peter Scully
Could not find a Little Gull among the approximately 200 Bonaparte's Gulls
working Jones Inlet in high winds today, but did have 12 RAZORBILL, including
several very close to the eastern jetty, the continuing bleach-white SNOWY OWL,
a first-cycle ICELAND GULL fighting the breeze at the Coastguard Station, and
an immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK along the Belt (Southern) Parkway just west of
Francis Lewis Blvd.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2011-10-25 Thread Sy Schiff
Jones Beach West End; 25 October

Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo, and I (Sy Schiff) started at the bar in front of the
marina. Among the 800-1,000 shorebirds, were an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 2
MARBLED GODWIT, a WILLET and a ROYAL TERN hidden among the resting gulls.
FORSTER'S TERNS continue fishing in the inlet.

The N wind started mild, picking up and moving to the NW as the morning
progressed. With the winds came a modest hawk flight; 2 dozen SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS, a dozen MERLIN, OSPREY, COOPER'S HAWK and a KESTREL. Land birds
included .8 species of sparrows with WHITE-CROWN and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW,
INDIGO BUNTING, PHOEBE, both KINGLETS and HERMIT THRUSH.

Joe and I stopped off at the Pt. Lookout "rock pile" on the way home. There,
we added EASTERN WOOD PEWEE and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. There was a modest
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and MERLIN flight there also.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2011-10-08 Thread Luke Ormand
This morning I was at Jones Beach West End from 7:30-9:30 and had some
success. The winds were not favorable but they were present enough to keep
mosquitos at bay. On the raptor front I had 2 Cooper's, 1 Sharp-shinned, at
least 5 osprey (several juveniles), 1 Northern Harrier and 3 merlin. With
regards to small birds, flickers of course were in good numbers, I spotted 1
brown thrasher, many yellow-rumped warblers and at the coast guard station I
had plenty of golden-crowned kinglets and a beautiful magnolia warbler. In
addition there were good numbers of palm warblers around and a variety of
sparrows. Photos of the birds can be seen here:

At about 3:30 today there was a very unusual American tree sparrow at the

would be the rufous eye line was a slight bit of gray before the cap. Also
at West End @ parking lot was an adult lesser black backed gull, and
leaving the West End area there was a single pipit in the median. Pat Jones,

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2010-12-16 Thread Peter Bookalam
This afternoon drove over to Jones Beach West End. There's an adult
white morph snow goose foraging with a small group of Canada Geese in
front of the NYS Park Police Station.
At the Coast Guard station there was a Horned Grebe rather close to the
dock and just to the east of the sand spit along the far edge there were
2 adult female Common Goldeneye(s). A small group of horned larks
continue in the east parking lot of WE2.

Tomorrow should be warmer!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach west end: Orange-crowned Warbler, Purple Sandpipers, & N. Shrike

2010-11-28 Thread John Gluth
The high points of the 5 hours (8:15-1:15) I spent birding the west end
of Jones Beach State Park today (Sunday), included the following: an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, observed along the fisherman's trail that runs
down to the beach from the southwest corner of Parking Field 2; 15 PURPLE
SANDPIPERS on the jetty at the mouth of Jones Inlet; and the continuing
NORTHERN SHRIKE, seen in the same location I reported it from Saturday
(just east of the nature center, near the park road).

A light wind and calm seas enabled me to walk out to the end of the jetty,
where I got fantastic looks at the Purple Sandpipers from within 20 ft.
(2 photos can be viewed at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jgluth_brb/). As I
was observing the PUSAs, over 200 Dunlin and at least 2 dozen Sanderlings
landed in stages at the tip of the jetty, the closest birds no more than
25 feet away. And all around me‹on the rocks, on the water, and in the air‹
were hundreds of Bonaparte's Gulls. Scores were feeding right in the surf
along the ocean beach stretching to the east of the jetty, and many more
were feeding around fishing boats at the mouth of the inlet and farther
offshore. But, despite looking for them among all the "Bonies", I didn't
have the same good luck as yesterday finding any Little or Black-headed
gulls. I did see Several Red-throated Loons (also very close to the beach),
a few Common Eider, modest numbers of N. Gannets, and a Harbor Seal or two.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End 2 - Cave Swallow

2010-11-24 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This afternoon, roughly between 1 and 2 PM, my mom and I observed one CAVE
SWALLOW foraging around the West End 2 parking lot and the far west entrance
to the parking lot. It was loosely associating with some Tree Swallows, but
seemed to be avoiding the larger group of them that would occasionally rest
on the ground. The Cave Swallow was often foraging low and would disappear
for five or more minutes at a time before suddenly reappearing. The bird
appeared to be an adult. The NORTHERN SHRIKE also put in a brief appearance
near the boardwalk to the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary. There was little of
interest seen from the Coast Guard Station, although it looked like a very
large flock of Bonaparte's Gulls (several thousand) had gathered on the far
side of the bay.

Good birding,

Shawn Billerman

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End- Northern Shrike, Marbled Godwit, Red Crossbill, Pine Siskins

2010-11-16 Thread Vinny Pellegrino
I started out this morning at the Coast Guard Station where the sand spit was
devoid of birds.  I tried scoping out the flats across the channel, but the
foggy conditions didn't help.  So I resorted to walking the median where there
were several flocks of Pine Siskins, Goldfinches, and a suprise male Red
Crossbill.  Raptors observed included Northern Harriers, Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1
Cooper's Hawk, and a Peregrine Falcon.  After checking the median I headed back
over to the Coast Guard Station where the fog was no longer present and the sun
even popped out for a bit.  A Harbor Seal greeted me as I approached the edge
of
the dock- pretty neat.  On the water were a pair of Common Eider, 1
White-winged
Scoter, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 4 Great Cormorants, lots of DC Cormorants, and
several Common Loons.  On the exposed flats were many American Oystercatchers
and among them was the Marbled Godwit.  An American Bittern that popped out of
the marsh for a short time was a nice suprise.  Before leaving, a Common Snipe
flew over calling.

At the Nature Center, the Northern Shrike continues.  Also present were several
Horned Larks, a  flock of Snow Bunting, and 2 Eastern Meadowlarks.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach, West End 11/15 including Northern Shrike

2010-11-15 Thread Donna Schulman
It was a very quiet overcast day at Jones Beach West End. At 10am, the bar
at the Coast Guard Station featured about 50 American Oystercatchers,
Black-bellied Plovers, Dunlin, a Sanderling, Brant, and a Long-tailed Duck.
The Marbled Godwit was not seen by me nor by a boating birder. There was a
lone Ruddy Duck in the water by the gazebo; Common Loons, and a White-eared
Scoter were swimmng in the Inlet. The hedge area and median were notable
for the lack of sparrows and finches. I did hear a Red-breasted Nuthatch,
but otherwise Yellow-rumps, Mockingbirds and one or two Northern Harriers
were the predominent birds.

The Northern Shrike was seen at the TR Nature Center on the east side of the
boardwalk, on a tall stalk, just beyond the hawk interpretative signs. It
was not there, then it was there, then it was gone! A flock of Snow
Buntings flew by the Nature Center, settling out in the sand. As I left the
Center parkng lot (which turned out to be open, though the center was
closed), a Cooper's Hawk, flew in.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End...

2010-11-14 Thread Andrew Baksh
I spent a quiet morning at Jones Beach birding around the Coast Guard
Station and the median to West End. The Marbled Godwit continues as well as
a couple of Royal Terns seen on and around the bar near the Coast Guard
Station.

Other notables included 3 Harlequin Ducks, 1 White-winged scoter, 1 Surf
Scoter and 1 Long-tailed Duck all in the same area. A search of the median
with other birders (Sam Janazzo and Sy Schiff) did *not* turn up any
sightings of Crossbills, though we did have decent numbers of Pine Siskins
and American Goldfinches. A surprise showing was a Ring Necked Pheasant
that was flushed as we worked the median.

Good and responsible birding!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2010-11-10 Thread Sy Schiff
Jones Beach 10 Nov

Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo and I (Sy Schiff) started at the Coast Guard Station
parking lot. We flushed a Winter Wren from the vegetation by the concession
stand on our way to the gazebo. On the bar were the usual suspects including
the MARBLED GODWIT and ROYAL TERN.

Again lots of sparrows to look through, but all common. In the median, both
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and PINE SISKINS were feeding before taking flight. The
turnaround has had few birds and today was no exception. Probably the same
HERMIT THRUSH is hanging out.

At the Nature Center we located the NORTHERN SHRIKE to the east, in its
previous favorite spot on top of a bare deciduous shrub. Another Winter Wren
was lurking in the ship wreck.
HORNED LARKS were flying around, but yesterday's SNOW BUNTING flock was not in
evidence. Siskin flocks passed overhead there also.

Good birding, Sy

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2010-11-09 Thread Sy Schiff
Jones Beach 9 Nov.

Cold sunny day with a brisk wind. Our usual group with a few additions birded
the west end. We are beginning to miss the pines and their screening from the
wind, Still it was a good day. Sparrows, all common, were numerous with
substantial numbers of Juncos. Overhead, Goldfinch and Siskins were streaming
through, with many of the latter stopping to browse among the pine cones and
Red-breasted Nuthatches. There were some blackbirds moving also with a few
Flickers, Purple Finches, AMERICAN PIPIT and Sharp-shinned Hawks.
. We still have Hermit Thrushes. Northern Harriers and Peregrine Falcons may be
locals

The bars held American Oystercatcher, Black-bellied Plover, Killdeer, Willet,
Red Knot, Sanderling, Dunlin, some gulls and a ROYAL TERN.

We walked over to the Nature Center (closed on Mon and Tues) and found the
NORTHERN SHRIKE on the boardwalk railing and then later in the field on the
west side of the center. So, the bird is expanding its territory. A quick
count of the ocean revealed 28 Northern Gannet.

Today was good birding. Sy Schiff

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2010-10-20 Thread Sy Schiff
Jones Beach West End 20 October

Land birding was slow except for the always present Yellow-rumped Warblers..
The interest, for me, was on the bar in front of the marina. Here there were
some hundreds of shorebirds to look through:--~125 Black-bellied Plover; 1
Golden Plover, several passes before I found it; ~20 American Oystercatchers;
~40 Red Knot; a dozen Sanderling; 150 Dunlin; a dozen Short-billed Dowitchers,
can't rule out a Long-billed as many had their heads tucked and offered
unfavorable views.

The eastern end of West End #2 lot had a small rain puddle which attracted
gulls including a full plumaged adult Lesser Black-backed Gull with bright
yellow legs.

At the turnaround, a short flurry of raptors included a Northern Harrier,
several Sharp-shinned Hawks including one that made a pass a larger Cooper's
Hawk. As my grandson used to say, "COOL". Close-up comparisons are always neat.

Warbler, Common Yellowthroat and Purple Finch, a bright male, plus a few
House Finches
Joe and I walked out to the beach. At the west jetty there was a male
Common Eider, our FOS. Two White-rumped Sandpipers and a Sanderling were
feeding where the jetty meets the shore. A Surf Scoter was in the inlet.
A continual stream of medium sized terns flew by in the ocean and inlet.
All we could identify were Forster's Terns and we assumed the rest were
also.
A good bright sunny day. Sy

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End & Pt. Lookout

2010-10-18 Thread Sy Schiff
Sam Jannazzo and I (Sy Schiff) later joined by Joe Giunta and Pat Jones
birded the West End. The hedgerow edge by the Coast Guard Station had a nice
concentration of sparrows (7 common species). The walk to the turnaround
produced few additional birds (Eastern Phoebe, Red-breasted Nuthatch, both
Kinglets and Goldfinch) other than a number of raptors overhead.
Sam left and we went over to Pt. Lookout and the "rock pile". This is the
the shrubby area behind the stone dumping area north of the main Lido Beach
town parking lot. Here we saw the same sparrows (today was a good sparrow day),
but no uncommon ones. We added Hermit Thrush, Palm Warbler, Common Yellowthroat
and Purple Finch, a bright male, plus a few House Finches
