Thing is, part of the attraction of the 645n is its small size. Give it
interchangeable backs and its just like any other 645. Plus, you can
still preload inserts for quick film changes, you just can't change
mid-roll without wasting the rest of the roll. If you're in that
situation where you want to go from film to film quickly, why not shoot
120 instead of 220? Then you're only shooting 15 shots per roll.

Oh, and the inserts are less than a third the price of a back for a
'blad, despite the similar body prices. That should be taken into
account, too.

I think that supersizing the 645n to accomodate interchangeable backs
would be like supersizing the MZ-3 to get a faster drive speed out of it.

Boy, howdy! I hope someone has a good solution for this one. After
the crew and spectator fatalities of the 1999 and 2000 seasons, all of
the fences at the venues have gotten much higher and stronger. It's
made things really tough of those of us without credentials.

 My camera's an SF-10 with a Pentax SMC F 35-70mm F3.5-4.5 lense.

Generally, I just look for places where I can shoot around the fence.
I also use a 400mm lens to shoot over the fences where that's possible.
The 400 makes it harder to get sharp shots, though, just due to its
smaller angle of view. The monopod helps, but a shorter lens would
help more. :-)

[...] Seattle Film Works [...] not C-41 process film [...]

If it's fairly recent SFW film, then it may just be C-41 process. I
seem to remember having heard that they ran out of the movie film stock
some time ago and had been using C-41 stock since.

In the future I'll want to use faster films to photograph fast-moving
 motorcycles, right?

When photographing cars, I generally want the shutter speed to be
around 1/125 to 1/500 second, depending on how fast the cars are going
at the spot I'm taking their photo. Faster cars want faster shutter
speeds ... I want the wheels to just be a bit blurred to give the
sensation of speed, but still use the fastest shutter speed I can, to
reduce blurriness due to the shakes.

Is the Fuji Superia + I saw in the supermarket last
night the same Superia I see mentioned here so often?

I'd think so, but I couldn't really tell you. I did get Superia XTRA
ASA400 at the grocery this weekend.

I found that I couldn't always zoom in on individual motorcycles as much as
I wanted, so in the future I'd want to use a larger (in mm) lense, right?

Yep, or get closer to the track. Unfortunately, even at 200mm you
might need credentials to get close enough. That's why the 400 is my
main lens at races.

How do I decide what F-range to look for?

I guess that really depends on a lot of things. Personally, I'd just
use the Sunny 16 rule as an approximation, then try to guesstimate
what sorts of weather (light) I'll have to be shooting in. Typically I
use an SMC 400/5.6 and an SMC-A 200/4 for the main on-track shots. The
only trouble I've had is that in really bright sunlight, sometimes I
have trouble keeping the shutter speed down to 1/250 when using ASA400
film.

Subject: Pentax and steam trains

This weekend, I was just coming back to Edinburgh from a party on one
of Scottish islands when I noticed a whole bunch of people waiting by
the side of the road with obscene amounts of camera gear. I saw
several Pentax 67s plus really hefty tripods. A bit further on, we
realised what all the fuss was about when we saw the white plume from
the chminey of a steam train. We raced it along the road and found a
place to park and waited for the train.

After a surprisingly long wait, the train finally came and I snapped
away at it with my MX and SMC 85/2. I wish I had had my 135 or even
my A70-210, but alas I didn't think I'd have needed them this
weekend. Soon after, a bus carrying all the gear (and their owners)
pulled up and the gear piled out (carried by their owners.)

The train stopped on the tracks. Reversed about one kilometre and ran
the same piece of track again.

After a quick chat with the owners of the gear, it turned out that
they were members of some national camera club and that they had
scheduled the train for the weekend. They'd all paid 50ukp each for
the event and my friend and I just happened to have been in the right
place at the right time.

I thought I have a lot of gear. One of the guys I spoke to had two
6X7s and an KX mounted on a wooden bracket on top of his Benbo (I
think). I saw some other guy walk past with two LXen with winders (or
maybe they were actually motordrives) mounted side-by-side on a
monopod. I certainly suffered from gear-envy.

I did notice a lot of Pentax gear. Was anyone on this list part of
that group? If I remember correctly, we took photographs about 10
miles from Bridge of Orchy, towards Glencoe, Rannoch Moor and Glen
Etive.

By the way, it was great fun.

Frank.

I just want to add that the ZX-7 allows you to set the
lens aperture from the camera body. This is useful
when using variable aperture zoom lens in a studio
setting. Once you set the aperture to f/8, it stays
at f/8 even when you zoom your lens. The ZX-7 also
has the ability to use a remote control (about a 15'
range), and the LCD display on the top of the camera
body lights up when it is dark and you slightly push
the shutter button.

Hi Paul,
I also bought S20 recently - say four months back, however, did not use it
that extensively to give any authoritative feed back to you. However, it is
surely a good scanner and my findings are -
1. yes, the scanned images are a bit soft. i always need
to sharpen those. default sharpness is something
around 20, i increase it to around 40.
2. the colours, in my observations, do need corrections.
not that those are not good, they are ok, however,
i find those tending a bit red.
3. also, exposure in highlights and shadows need
   adjustments
4. i used to scan normally at 300 / 600 dpi with jpg or
bmp formats, just this week-end i tried at 2400 dpi
with tiff format - i thought of doing some
'dust-fixing' in picture-it. it was good.
5. i had a pretty old bw negative, which, somehow, did
not come out that good. i am still struggling with
   that one.

There is one photographer who has compiled a very good information on using
this S20 scanner - I don't remember his name/his site right now. I have it
at home and shall let you know in the evening. It is a good source.

I am surprised, however, on your point that the colour reproduction is spot
on. I still would suggest you to play around exposure and colours a bit.
It would enhance the quality a lot. Also, looks like it is rather cheaper
there. I bought it for something around US$ 450 +. I am very much in U.S.
Have they reduced prices recently ?!

Hi,

I have been scanning my negs and slides at work on a Microtek Scanmaster 4
and have been really really unhappy with the results. I went into a store
to
buy a dishwasher on Friday evening and ended up walking out with a
Photosmart S20 film scanner aswell :) it was reduced to $499au (around
$250us) from $995au. So as a results Saturday was a scanning frenzy and
i've
so far been really happy with the results. The colour reproduction is spot
on, the images loose a little bit of sharpness which is easily corrected in
PS. I think the 2400dpi will be fine for my curren use, which is mainly web
images and PUG submissions.

I think the worst part about it all is dust on the negs.

I dont have a good enough printer to make any prints, so i'm not sure how
well it works in that respect.

I also love being able to scan strips of 5 negs at a time.

Have any other list members got this scanner and how do you find? any tips
for better scans?

Hi Ralf ...

If you go here http://www.agfa.com.au/Media/Rodinal.pdf
you will see Agfa's minimum recommendation. However, like you, I
prefer using a somewhat greater amount of Rodinal when using a 1:100
dilution, which means using a two roll tank for one roll of film, so I
get five or six ml of developer in 500cc or 600cc of distilled water.

Coincidentally, I processed one roll in a single roll tank the other
night, using 3ml of developer in 300ml of water. I could not tell the
difference between those negs and those processed in the greater
amount of solution by examination on a light box. A print may yield a
different conclusion.

There are two levers in the K-mount which couple lens and body (see
URL:http://www.BDimitrov.de/kmp/extras/K-mount/K.html), one of them
keeps the aperture open, the other one tells the body how far the lens
will be stopped down during exposure. When you use DOF preview, the lens
gets stopped down to the shooting aperture, which reduces the amount of
light reaching the exposure meter. But the second lever is unaltered, so
it still 'tells' the camera that the lens will be stopped down further
during exposure. Hence the meter reading drops. I see no obvious way to
circumvent this with mechanical DOF preview systems.

use not only their lenses (like the 43mm Ltd they made in Leica Thread
mount) but Leica lenses as well as lenses for other, earlier
rangefinder cameras. A simple adapter could be used to couple various
lenses to the Pentax body (as is already being done for other
cameras).

Pentax could produce all they want of the bread and butter lines of
cameras, and offer something superior to those who want more unique or
specialized offerings.

Opto 330 review

2001-10-01 Thread Mark Erickson

The online Canadian magazine Megapixel.Net has
a thorough review of the Opto 330 in this month's
issue. They can be pretty tough, but they really
liked the Opto 330.

http://www.megapixel.net/html/issueindex.html

I've been concerned about Pentax fumbling the
digital implementation of the upcoming MZ-Digital
camera. From this review, it looks like Pentax
is figuring out the digital camera game and
will be able to compete head-to-head with
the best out there.

I've always taken my film on as hand baggage, so that could cause

that is highly unlikely to happen, although I'm sure they will
drastically reduce the size of carry-on bags.

Not good enough. I habitually travel with 100+ rolls of film and

IIRC, Ilford recommends washing within 9 degrees fahrenheit of your
processing temp. They have some informative processing pdf's on their
site:

http://www.ilford.com/html/us_english/bw.html

It's probably mentioned somewhere in there. I try and keep it within 5
degrees, since tap water can fluctuate a bit.

Also, there was a good thread on this washing technique not too long ago
on r.p.d. A Google search should turn it up.

 Hi Paul,
I also bought S20 recently - say four months back, however, did not use it
that extensively to give any authoritative feed back to you. However, it
is
surely a good scanner and my findings are -
 1. yes, the scanned images are a bit soft. i always need
to sharpen those. default sharpness is something
around 20, i increase it to around 40.
 2. the colours, in my observations, do need corrections.
not that those are not good, they are ok, however,
i find those tending a bit red.
 3. also, exposure in highlights and shadows need
adjustments
 4. i used to scan normally at 300 / 600 dpi with jpg or
bmp formats, just this week-end i tried at 2400 dpi
with tiff format - i thought of doing some
'dust-fixing' in picture-it. it was good.
 5. i had a pretty old bw negative, which, somehow, did
not come out that good. i am still struggling with
that one.

There is one photographer who has compiled a very good information on
using
 this S20 scanner - I don't remember his name/his site right now. I have
it
at home and shall let you know in the evening. It is a good source.

I am surprised, however, on your point that the colour reproduction is
spot
on. I still would suggest you to play around exposure and colours a bit.
It would enhance the quality a lot. Also, looks like it is rather cheaper
there. I bought it for something around US$ 450 +. I am very much in
U.S.
Have they reduced prices recently ?!

I think the worst part about it all is dust on the negs.

I dont have a good enough printer to make any prints, so i'm not sure how

The 5n could be the best if ...

2001-10-01 Thread Tonghang Zhou

... if it

1. Had 1/250 flash sync, and

2. Did not have that eye-sore panorama switch, and instead

3. Had the spotmeter button there, which should be a button,
not a mode, so that can be used to evaluate parts of the
scene in any mode,

and, although not critical but still useful and perhaps trivial
to implement: if it

4. Had half-stop shutter speeds in manual mode. After all,
the speeds are there. Only needed unmarked click stops in
the dial. And if it

5. Had the exposure hold button being a toggle (or at least
an option for such.)

The intuitiveness and surface simplicity of the camera makes
it really good camera, even better in the MZ-S in my humble
opinion (if it had the extras above.)

The 1/250 sync speed may be some extra effort and cost, but the
others should be easy to implement, right?

Hi Paul,

This is the site address ...http://www.normankoren.com
I hope, you will find his pictures and writing quite helpful. What I really
liked is he has been using this S20 till recently.

I am not aware whether this model S20 is discontinued. I have not heard it
so far. I think it is still available here and on site of HP it is still
not as 'discontinued'. Anyway, good that you got it a lot cheaper. ( I am
jealous !!)

I too read about vuescan and thought of downloading it. however, so far
have not yet done it - just got too much things at work. how do you find
vuescan ? i think it must be that vuescan which is giving you better scans
without making adjustments.

there are still some other sites in some e-mails with me.
shall hunt those and forward those too later... got to go to bed..

HI Anand,

Mine was the last one they had in stock so they reduced it from $995au to
$499au. The salesman said it had been discontinued? It came with a 3 year
warrantly also.

When comparing my slides to the scans i'm getting the colours are pretty
close to whats on the slide. I will have a play around with them though, as
i'm sure it could be improved.

I have downloaded Vuescan, but have only had a quick look at it. Will do
some testing comparing it to the HP software when i get a chance.

I look forward to looking at the site you mention.

the PUG shots I like best

2001-10-01 Thread Richard Seaman

Air Water - Durham (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/clouds1.html)
Nice light! These sorts of shots seem to come and go in a few moments, so
you have to grab them quick! With the different layers of clouds this one
has a very nice three dimensional feel to it.

Coming... (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/JodkrSm3.html)
Very dramatic, especially the bright area at top right. The ragged cloud
edges near the horizon are also interesting. This shot also seemed
other-worldly and weird, but perhaps the foreground is a bit too mundane and
this-worldly and could have been cropped out. An alternative would be to
crop out the land but leave the lamp-posts by chopping the bottom 20% of the
photo - that might give a very surreal effect!

Lightning bolt (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/41843a.html)
Another Kiwi in the USA! Perhaps like me you're amazed by the lightning
storms over here, sometimes with several flashes a second. The purple color
is fantastic, I assume it's natural? I haven't tried taking lightning
shots, but perhaps shooting the clouds and the area where the lightning's
hitting the ground might be especially effective. I guess the ultimate
would be shooting down from a hilltop, but it might not be too good for your
health.

Ions... (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/ions.html)
Oh baby, this just has to be my favorite shot of all in this month's
gallery! I think having the tower in the shot really adds some impact, and
the color is just fantastic.

Ice Wall (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/glaciar.html)
Nice! Having the people in the front for scale is a great idea, something I
don't do often enough in my own shots. I'm surprised you only used a 135mm
lens, the perspective looked a lot more squashed than that - I guess it
shows how huge the wall really is, not just a trick of the camera!

Water Power (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/Breaker2.html)
St Helena? Are you kidding? Man, PUG members sure do get around! Or were
you exiled there for some unspeakable crime committed in Oz? As your title
says, it really does convey a terrific sense of power.

Water Colours (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/Wuerm.html)
Excellent! I've never thought of exposing moving water for such a long
period of time. The result is great.

Beautiful Blues (http://pug.komkon.org/01oct/lake.html)
I thought this was a great photo even before I saw that it was in New
Zealand. In fact, I even thought this was a great photo when I was thinking
it was taken in Australia! The angle of the water line at the center of the
photo does make it look as if the photo might be slightly tilted; it's very
hard to say whether that's correct or whether the shot is level, because the
human eye does seem to latch onto water as the final arbiter of what is or
isn't level (and, of course, walls and other vertical structures also define
what is level in the vertical realm). On very rare occasions I've even
slightly tilted a photo in the photo editor so that it looks level to the
human eye, even though I knew it wasn't exactly that way in real life (sorry
to those people for whom doing such a thing is a crime). Oh yeah, and are
those finger prints near the bottom of the photo?

Richard.

Doesn't fit.
The MX is slightly wider than the ME super.
Also beware of non-Pentax ERCs. I have one, got off a dealer on ebay and

Kodak has had their Pro Back 4K chip which is a 2-inch square sensor

Kodak makes the 760 on a F5 body (Nik**) and is a 2x3K chip (35mm) and sells
for about $8,500. Can** just announce their new EOS D1 (EOS 1 body) which is

Subject: 645 or 67?

Once again, I feel like a voice in the wilderness.
For the record, I have owned a 645 (Bronica ETRs) and presently
own a Pentax 6x7.
For the record, I hate the 645 format, for a variety of reasons,
most of which relate to printing the negatives. The film
transport in a 645 is from bottom to top (or vice versa, it
doesn't matter). This means that the negative sits vertically in
the enlarger. Great if you shoot portraits, not so good if you
shoot landscapes.
I shoot landscapes.
The 6x7 is extremely 35mm like, although it is about 4 times
larger. It operates in much the same fashion as a 35mm camera. I
am not sure about the new 67II. I have never seen one. Perhaps
it works like a more modern camera.
I like the Pentax 6x7 a lot. I have the 45, 75, 90LS, 105, and
135 macro for it, and have used the 165 and 200mm (old). I also
have, and would recommend the extension tubes and hand grip.
Especially the hand grip. It is worth the cameras weight in
gold. The 45mm is extremely good, the 75 is not so good, the 90,
105, 135 and 165 are excellent, and the 200 is not so good.
The nice thing is, because of the smaller magnifications, a less
than excellent lens can still give excellent results.
I have successfully done handheld photos with the 6x7 at speeds
as low as 1/30th with the 105mm lens. The weight of the camera
helps, as at around 3 kilos with the meter prism, it has a lot
of inertia. A tripod is recommended whenever possible, and not
some wimpy little thing. You need a good, solid tripod.
It is heavy to hump around, but the results are worth the
effort.
If you are planning on using the camera commercially for
weddings and the like, the 6x7 is wasted on that sort of work,
go for the 645. If you are planning on doing landscape
photography mostly, the 6x7 is better.
If you are planning on shooting street with a medium format, The
Plaubel 6x7 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/plaubel.htm for a
review) can't be beat. The 80mm lens, is a really nice street
focal length in the 6x7 format.
FWIW, I shoot 4x5 as well, but I find that often, I can shoot
6x7 and get the same quality on the print. I can't do that with
645.
William Robb

Hi all :) I'm new to the list, and have plans to move into
medium
format in the extremely (next couple weeks) near future. I'd
like
to stick with Pentax, though I'm a little confused about the
differences between the 645 and the 67, and am not sure where
to
turn to find out which would work better for me. I'd like for
the
camera that I get to operate as close to 35mm as possible, for
comfort and convenience reasons (carting it around downtown,
etc.)
I currently have absolutely no automatic functionality, though
I'd be interested in using it if it were available (primarily
autofocus, possibly flash on rare occasions) but this is not
at
all a requirement. I've been using the same K1000 for the last
8
years, so that's what I'm used to. Cost is an issue, so I'll
be
purchasing used... this brings in the 6x7 as well. I'm feeling
a little bit overwhelmed and would love to understand why
those
that have the 67 chose it over the 645 and vice-versa, unless
it's purely a preference with regard to negative size, ack!
Please help, I'm sorry that I can't give more info, I'm just
not
exactly sure what questions to ask even, this is how
uninformed
 I am.

 Regards,
 Marisa

PS. I love this list so far (again, I'm new) I think it's
great
that the subversives have their own forum, almost like a
secret society. (mind you, I have no problem with Hasselblad
or
Contax or Leica, it's just that I don't make 6 figures, heh)

1.7x AF Adapter - I was Wrong!

2001-10-01 Thread Mark Cassino

OK - I'll eat crow here. A couple of years ago I ran some tests with the
1.7x AF adapter and was disappointed with the results. It did not stack up
to the 1.4x-L and 2x-L teleconverters, and the AF, which worked fine with a
50 mm lens, did not seem to be effective with longer lenses.

Last weekend and again today I decided to reconsider this, and I put the
1.7x onto the 400 f2.8, and shot some birds. Looking at the results, I
have to admit I was wrong!

The slides are very sharp. They don't have the great tack sharpness of the
400 f2.8 alone, or even with the other TC's, but they are still more than
acceptable and better than many other lenses sans teleconverter. When I
tested the AF with the 400 f.28 I was working with a subject fairly close
up, and the narrow DOF really wreaked havoc on the adapter's AF
ability. In real field work, while some pre-focusing is needed the AF
works quite well. I even managed to get some sharp shots of birds in
flight. The 400 f2.8 and 1.7x make a pretty decent 680 f4.5 AF setup,
though pre-focusing when shifting to subjects more than a few meters is a must.

I stand corrected - and I'm glad the folks on this list kept sharing their
assessment of this device. That's what got me to go back and try it again.

Re: 645 or 67?

2001-10-01 Thread Treena Harp

I have the 645 (manual, not autofocus), and while it's a little bulky for
small hands, it is my favorite camera. I'd like to acquire the 67, but I do
mostly people photography, so the 645 is a little better suited to my needs
with its (slightly) higher flash sync. I was able to get a good used body
and back from KEH at less than $700 and an 75mm (non leaf shutter) for
around $225 off ebay, so the 645 is rather reasonably priced, and lenses in
good condition aren't terribly expensive -- below 300mm, that is. It's a
heckuva lot of fun, if you decide to go with that option. Although that
larger neg IS tempting ...

and I like the composition - especially the 2 'booms' hovering over the
river. Rescan it and 'do the colors justice' and send it to me, please!

Jaume Lahuerta - Dune du Pilat - nice! Good eye!

John Coyle - Water Power - a powerful shot! (Oversharpened IMHO)

Gary L. Murphy - Lighthouse - perfect. Good composition, good sky, I like
the pier/breakwater running to the left of the lighthouse itself. Looks
good!

Leon Altoff - Something Fishy - good sense of the absurd - I like the

it's not your regular spec of dust but it's not large
enough to warrant a full cleaning.
