Re: Update on 'dead' 6x7
With no film in the camera, you cannot advance the film lever. It is uncoupled. Reason is that once you load film, and line up the arrow on the backing paper with the appropriate 120 or 220 designator, and close the back, the advace lever does not cock the shutter until you arrive at Frame #1. Not #0. Anyway, an empty camera, or a loaded one with the back open, cannot be tested without the infamous 6x7 tool that you can stick in a small hole in the upper right side light locking channel on the back of the body. This engages something that enables operation without film, perhaps with out batteries?? The tool is about 1 round, with two curved spikes coming off the top in either direction. Imagine, laying on your back, and having a wart hog with it's head just above you, and eying your privates. IF the hog had a round head, with it's horns, in silluette, 'twould look like the tool. In harmony with this beginning of film action, the advance lever only advances the film after the last shot as well. This way the shutter remains in an unstressed state until the next roll is loaded. Luck! JoMac on 04/28/02 20:12, William Kane opined: Upon placing the battery in the compartment, I found that the shutter button no longer fires the shutter. The mirror is in the ready position. When I originally got the camera the film advance was kind of sticky, now it's extremely smooth. My guess is that something uncoupled inside the camera body. I may try to go in myself and see what I can find. I have a digital copy of the 6x7 repair manual, but if anyone has any clues, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Fw: M49 Filters for Pentax
Hi all, I plan to use these to supplement my existing 49mm filters. I have 11, + an original (mint) Asahi Pentax Polarizing Filter. Hoya Y(K2), Orange (G), Green (x1), Red (25A), Spare Skylight (1A)+(1B), Hoya 81A and 82A, Diffuser, Cross screen, PL. Apart from the Asahi Pentax PL which I was given a year or so ago, I've had the others since 1973, when I bought my SPF. Question: What are your most used filters, and what do you use them for? Re: f:22, K18/3.5 warmth, 20mm bee's nest...
Is it possible that this is a sample variation? Have other owners noticed this? One poster on Stans lens comment site said it was identical to his K20/4 in respect to color rendition with the skylight filter selected (or maybe the K20/4 is warm too?). At any rate, I dont think the warm cast would bother me much. The K 18/3.5 has four built in warming filters and you have to use one of them. The warm colour rendition doesn't bother me though. So you get a super wide with the DOF of a standard lens. This means that diffraction problems show up earlier on MF than on 35mm because you have to stop further down the MF lens. NW af280t. It worked okay for most of what I needed. The 500 has more than NW double the power of the 280 though and sometimes I cannot see how I got Nick, isn't this wrong? GN of FTZ500 is roughly the same, only slightly (maybe half a stop) higher than AF280T! You can't compare them direct as Pentax OVERINFLATED the FTZ's GN by stating it for the longest zoom of it. Shitty! Only Metz and perhaps Sunpak don't inflate their GN. That's lying to the customer isn't it? Actually, all the GN 50 FTZ500s, Nikon speedlights, EOS EF540s, all are inflated GN is at their longest zoom. So so industry standard is to state GN at 35mm wide coverage. Any good working (good capacitator) older Vivitar 285, Metz 35CT, etc... shoe flash will have slightly more oomph than any of these high bucks OEM flashes! Why? Their GN is stated as GN 35(m) at 35mm coverage, while these OEMs have only about 32 at 35mm coverage... At least the pre-FTZ pentax flashes are true about their GN, unlike the FTZ flashes. Otherwise, the FTZ500 has superb functions of course! But the GN is inflated. You can attach a simple fresnel device to your old flash to make it zoom and double it's GN at long focal lengths too... and many flashing people never do direct flash, at least I don't. You can get a Russian filter (M49) for abou 4 USD in Poland so 24 USD for the set seems an usual price. OTOH I've been told by the camera store clerk (who uses Pentax as well) that those cheap Russian filters are of poor quality. There are several ways to deal with this sun glare. 1) recompose the pic without the sun glare in the picture, take a meter reading and then use that reading to shoot with the sun glare in the pic. Ignore your meter reading. The sun glare will be overexposed but that's okay. It's probably what drew you to the pic in the first place. 2)Always carry a gray card. Take a meter reading off it and go with it. 3) If your camera has spot metering take a few readings off the subject and use that reading, once again ignoring the camera meter. Don't forget your camera meter is just a starting point. It gives you middle gray. Anything at the two extremes means you will have to figure out the correct exposure on your own. It's not difficult and once you start shooting the extremes your pictures will improve greatly. That's when you get the drama. Re: Flash for PZ-1p
Depends on what you want to do. I have the AF500FTZ and AF400FTZ. Don't really need both but prices for the 400 are not too strong so I'm inclined to keep it. Both handle TTL the same way, the AF500 is more powerful and has more features like the strobe effect, more manual power settings, LCD display, and auto-zooming with F and FA lenses. OTOH, the manual zoom on the AF400 FTZ stays where you put it, so if you are using manual focus lenses it won't kick back to a wider angle (which happens on the AF500FTZ when it is powered down.) I used a Sunpack PZ4400 something like that for a long time and for an inexpensive flash it did very well. My original Sunpack was some sort of unusual setup - it worked fine with a 3 contact connector that did not touch the 4th pin on the hotshoe, but would not work with an LX (which has only 3 pins.) When I broke the old one and had it replaced, the new flash required a 4 pin connector. So apparently they changed the electronics. Hope this helps - - MCC At 07:58 PM 4/28/2002 -0400, you wrote: Looking for recommendations for a general purpose flash for PZ-1p. I guess AF500FTZ would be best but I wouldn't mind spending less. Re: [cheap A 28/2]
Overall, I'm not happy with the quality of the A-series lenses. I've had more trouble with them than the K-series or the M-series, including the high-zoot A* lenses. Wobbly barrels, stiff aperture rings, less than smooth focusing, chattering while focusing on a tripod, and the displeasure of plastic against my delicate fingers. What makes this all the more disheartening is that I have many fewer A-series lenses than K-series, SMCTs, and M lenses (very few Ms actually), yet, with the exception of water damage to my beloved Bow-Wow (rip), and two Ks that I bought that needed repair, the A-series has given me the only problems I've had. Feh! in general to the A-lenses, better coating or not. Interesting, Shel. I have pretty pretty much a 50:50 mixture of K's and A's (with only a couple of M's and an M*, a couple of AF's, a couple of F*'s, and an FA* in the mix) (so maybe it's only about a 40:40 K:A mixture - g). However, I have never had the misfortune of having an A lens malfunction. I do see that the A lens build quality is generally not as good as in the K lenses (which is one reason why I have a lot of those K lenses), but I can't personally fault the A lenses I have for ever letting me down. I've never seen one, and I've not ever seen a user report on it, either. I guess a few of these do exist, but you couldn't prove it by me - g. XR Rikenon P 50/2, two thumbs up
Last week I received the color prints from the first roll of film for which I used an XR Rikenon P 50/2. This is the giveaway lens that comes with so many Ricoh and Sears bodies sold on EBay and elsewhere. I had used the 50/2 (52mm filter size), with short metal hood, at f/2.8 and f/4 with ISO 400 film when recording an indoor crowd event. A tripod was used, together with my KX's mirror lockup. Simply put, I am delighted with the results, corner to corner. On my Pentax 50/1.4 PKA, I must stop down to f/5.6 to attain similar sharpness. At first I suspected I had used my SMC 35/2K, my secret weapon for getting sharp results at f/2.8. But a study of the field of view confirmed that these results had been delivered by the humble, lightweight (190 g?) Rikenon. I've been wanting to give away one of my Super Programs to my 24-year-old stepdaughter, but I felt I should give her a decent 50 with it. Well, I'm so happy with the results that I'll give her my PKA 50/1.4! I'd still like to try an XR RIkenon 50/1.4P, which I hear may be even better from f/2 to f/4. When introducing the P versions, Ricoh gave its XR Rikenon 50/1.4 and 50/1.7 a tweaked optical design and multicoating. The 50/2, I believe, remained optically unchanged. The Sears versions of the 1/4 and 1.7 are the pre-P versions; I don't know about the Sears 50/2. RE: LX motor drive - question
Hi, some comments: the original cells ( 1/3AA 14x17mm, cost in Germany about 2 Euro each ) have a capacity of 110 mAh. The POWER PACK M gives 25mA charge current. So the nominal charging time for a complete empty pack will be 110*1,4/25=6,16 = 6 hours 10 minutes. ( 1,4 is the typical effiency factor for NiCd charge calculation ) I would not recommend to use NiMh cells for such kind of charging ( user controlled by time ). They are much more sensitive for overcharging ! Each overcharging will reduce the capacity ! I putted those in a home cellular phone and the cells were dead after half of a year. The charging was very stupid: charging complete after putting the handset onto the base even if already fully charged. NiCd cells are here much more sturdy. regards Bernd H. The biggest issue with the NiCd packs is not overcharging (a full charge is 16 hours) Other post says 6 to 10 hours. 16 would be a max ? but with having to wait until they are dead to recharge them, or rigging a device to discharge them before you charge them. Because of memory building ? My best advice would be to buy the NiCd pack, use it w/o worrying about the NiCd battery life, and they when they die, replace the NiCd cells with NiMH cells. NiMH ??? Almost any battery shop can build or order the cell packs...I can give you specs if you need them. James, I have 2 dead power packs and I want to have them repacked. Could you give me the specs ? It could be usefull to the guy (have only seen guys in there...) who will do the job. Thanks, Andre -- - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I am filing my concerns, but the Canadian government has a bad habit of taxing first, asking questions later, and not listening to the answers anyway. William Robb I have actually went into all this trouble and read the document (at least parts of it). Among other things, it proposes adding $0.69 to the price of each CD. Now, each CD can store quite a few (say, 69 as a for instance) digital images. Do you really value your work at penny a photo? Seriously? Re: How Much Film Do You Carry
If I'm planning a photo hike of two or three hours, I'll take about six rolls of 120 or four rolls of 35mm. Usually, I take half BW, half color. I rarely shoot only BW, because I don't want to have to process that much film. For a quick walkaround in town, I'll take two to three rolls of 120 or two rolls of 35. For outdoor model shoots, I've been taking about ten rolls of 120 and usually shooting about six. Paul Shel Belinkoff wrote: How much film do you carry when out shooting just for the day or a few hours? This question was prompted by someone on the list mentioning that s/he went out with only one roll of fast film in the camera. As primarily a BW shooter, I rarely go out with color *and* BW, and certainly never use color in one body and BW in another - I find it gets too confusing for me. But I do go out with film of different speeds since the light may change, I may be out longer than planned, etc. Yesterday, for example, I planned to be out photographing for about four or five hours. I took eight rolls of film with ISO ratings of 25 through 1600, although I only used three rolls. This is typical for me, although it's only been recently that Fuji Neopan 1600 has found a place in the camera bag. I'd not considered the new cameras with fast shutter speeds. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess. Most of the time I'm using cameras with a top speed of 1/1000, but rarely ever use anything faster than 1/500. New cameras have speeds of up to 1/8000 these days, don't they? Well, I had fun taking the half-dozen or so shots I took before selling my SMC Takumar 500/4.5 + 1.4X (700mm) lens. But the 400/5.6 PKA is ever so much lighter and so much easier to set up and use, esp. with manual focus. I've decided that 400 is plenty focal length for me. Re: How Much Film Do You Carry
I'm at a loss to understand how you can standardize on essentially one emulsion and speed. How do you deal with a wide range of light? If it's very bright or if you're shooting at dusk, can one film speed/emulsion handle the different brightness ranges and contrasts? Doesn't using 400 speed film limit your DOF options in bright light? Good question, Shel. Well, first, I did say 95% of my shooting, and, if I'm going out with the larger camera bag, by default (or intentionally, if I know ahead of time that I might be able to use it), I usually have a couple of rolls of Kodak Gold 100 and a couple of rolls of Kodak 400CN (yes, I know, that's still ASA 400 - g) in it. I also have a few rolls of Fuji 1600 in the freezer, if needed (but only for when I'm really desperate for photons). However, I do admit to using Fuji Superia 400 film almost all the time. A lot of this has to do with most of my shooting. 400 speed works well for indoor flash shooting (mostly informal portraits on the fly) - it's f/8 and be there (only sometimes opening up the aperture for a more determined or more studied portrait). Outside, for wildlife shooting, I'd generally be using a fairly long lens, set wide open or close to it (for highest shutter speed possible), so that DOF is usually pretty meager anyway. I usually give up trying to get terrestrial wildlife shots when it starts to get dusky, and I don't spend much time trying to watch whales at night, either (Braille whale watches are none too popular - g). For macro shooting (and I'm mostly talking outdoors macro shooting), I generally am trying to close down the aperture a ways, to try to obtain as much DOF as possible, and Fuji 400 makes for a pretty good compromise between speed and print quality - I very rarely blow something up more than 8x12, say, anyway. If needed, I can usually rummage around in the bottom of one of the kit bags here to find various ND filters to use with most any of my lenses, if the light is too bright for what I want to do (which, because of the shooting I am usually doing, is not too often). Could you give me the specs ? It could be usefull to the guy (have only seen guys in there...) who will do the job. You've probably had this site pointed out to you a dozen times by now, but here it is anyway. The best by far: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~distudio/publications.html follow the links to rebuilding a NiCad Pack LX. HTH --- Rob's site is excellent, but I would add one tip. Most battery sellers can have the packs made for you (and shrink wrapped together), saving you some some of the work. The charge for building the packs is usually fairly low. Bernd is correct about the sensitivity of NiMH batteries to overcharge. An inexpensive timer (like one of those vacation light timers you can get for your lamps) will solve this problem (also not a bad idea with NiCd packs, too). Ever since I started celling my packs with NiMH cells, I have been telling myself that I need to find time to build a smart charger (or better yet, a smart fast charger) for the packs. I never seemed to get it done, though. Perhaps now that I have picked my cameras back up... The huge plus of NiMH packs is that they are less succeptable to memory issues so you can charge partially discharged packs w/o worry. If you use NiMH packs, you can build them from 1/3 AA cells. They range from 225 mah to 300 mah. The NiCd cells suggested by the article are 1/3 A cells with a 225 mah rating. NiMH cells are also a bit more environmentally friendly. Oh, and the 16 in my original post is a brain-fart ofsorts. Slow charge times for 100 percent discharged cells can be calculated with the formula (capacity mah / charge mah * 1.4). My packs are celled with 275 mah NiMH cells, which works out to 16 hours. http://www.advanced-battery.com/BATTGUID.HTM has a quick overview of basic battery info. Confused yet? Re: How Much Film Do You Carry
My name ain't Fred (And, that reminds me of a long running joke). For years I worked in the same building as another guy. Every morning, he would greet me, Hi Fred. I'd reply, Hi Mac. My name's not Max, he'd come back. That's OK, my name's not Fred, was my punch line. We did that for several years before we bothered to actually learn each others real name. Anyhow, As I said my name's not Fred, but I can answer your question. C-41 film is strange about that. If all you carried was 400 speed, you would have no problem because you would get a good printable negative from 100 to 400. Advertised film speed for C-41 films are about the maximum useable speed. You can almost always get away with a 2 stop over exposure. In fact many of us think a one stop over exposure is not an over exposure at all, but the correct film speed for general use. Further, if you are not trying to be artistic you can get a useable exposures in bright sun at 400, and of course it is usable in normal low lighting. Now, back on subject, 35mm C-41: I usually keep up to about 8 rolls (24x) of 100 in my bag, and 4 rolls (24x) of 400 speed, and just lately have added a couple rolls of 1600 (36x). By those ratios it is obvious, I think, that I tend to use the lowest speed film that will work. I don't usually use more than 2-4 rolls at a time, but like to have some available at all times, and it is cheaper in 4 packs. I do not normally keep film in my cameras. When I finish a shoot, I pull all the film and have it processed, thus next shoot I load whatever film I want to use. Since the cheap labs I have to use these days don't charge for unprintable negs that doesn't cost much extra. With the Graphic I have been using only 125 speed BW film (FP4+, or PX). I usually put 3 double holders (I have a dozen) in one coat pocket and 1/2 dozen #5 flashbulbs in the other. So far the #5 flash bulbs have given enough light for everything I have shot. If I really need more light I would have to find some #11 or larger flashbulbs. Cavers and such use some really serious flashbulbs. Unfortunately, I can not afford to get 4x5 sheet film processed right now, but in a couple of months I hope to have somewhere to do it myself. Kodak seems to be telling me I am going to have to change to Tri-X, and buy more film than I want at a time. not so happy grin. Now, as for the shutter mode dial on the ME Super - I have to agree that it's a little annoying to turn, and that little white button that has to be pressed down every time to turn the dial past Auto just adds to the annoyance (that is, until one glues it in the down position with a carefully applied tiny drop of super glue). Those are exactly my feelings: love the buttons, hate the mode dial (because of that tiny white thingy you have to press with your fingernail). Never occured to me to glue it down though g If you want to try this, though, be ~very~ careful - use only a ~tiny~ drop of super glue, and, after applying the drop, hold the button down while you keep turning the mode dial back and forth - you don't want any excess glue freezing the mode dial in place - g. I've done this previously to two different ME Supers, and I'm actually about to do it again with an ME Super SE (enlisted for use where ~quiet~ is needed - the LX's, as much as I love 'em, for some occasions are just too darn LOUD - g). I find it too confusing to shoot with more than one speed at a time, so if using more than one body they each contain the same film. Yes, but this is one advantage of having more than one body ready at any given time - one can have color film in one body and bw in the other, for example, or maybe fast film in one body and slower film in another (with a flash unit mounted on the slower body), etc. At one time, I used to sometimes carry slide film in one body and print film in the other, but I haven't shot slide film for some time now (except for occasional astrophotography use). Back in the early eighties I remember reading about the exposure latitude in typical color print films, and even the suggestion that one should set the ASA on a camera to one full stop lower than rated speed. Although I have done that back then, I am also always trying to get as fast a shutter speed as I can, so I compromise a bit - I almost always set the ASA dial (for 400 color print film) at 1/3 or 2/3 stops lower than 400 (what is it, then, 320 or 260 or something?). Works for me - I think it gives me a good chance of avoiding underexposure if the metering (or my judgement) is off a bit. (Actually, when I use 'em, I do this routinely with other color print films, too - 1/3 or 2/3 stops lower than rated.) Fred - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: How Much Film Do You Carry
I use a little bag just for film - a quick inventory of the current contents: Velvia - 4 rolls E100S - 6 rolls E100VS - 2 rolls E200 - 4 rolls Provia F - 2 rolls Supra 100 - 2 rolls Kodak Gold 100 - 10 rolls (24 exposure) Walgreen's house film (ISO 100) - 1 roll Royal Gold 200 - 1 roll Kodak Gold 400 - 8 rolls (24 exposure) Fuji Superia 400 - 4 rolls (24 exposure) Ilford XP 2 Super - 5 rolls Fuji 800 - 1 roll (24 exposure) Fuji 1600 - 1 roll (24 exposure) The E100S followed by VS and Velvia are my bread and butter films. I do like print film, and especially grainy print film, for some botanical work - hence the Gold 100. The Supra is for hard lighting that will exceed the latitude of slide film. I recently pulled all the traditional BW and put it back into the freezer - a temporary measure until I get some sort of home developing setup in place. Otherwise I'd have 5 or rolls of that in there too. I don;t carry all this with me - once I arrive at the scene and decide what to shoot I grab the film that seems right and head out with that, ether in a photo vest pocket, backpack, or belt bag. I mark the cannisters when I add film to the bag to keep things rotated, but I have not had problems with film going bad - I just shot out a roll of 11 month old Provia F 400 that had been stored un-refrigerated and saw no problems. - MCC At 08:28 AM 4/29/2002 -0400, you wrote: How much film do you carry when out shooting just for the day or a few hours? Re[ How Much Film Do You Carry
Another thing that I've taken to doing is changing rolls before they get to the end. If there are four or five or so exposures left, and there's a break in the shooting, I'll put in a fresh roll. It's really disappointing to have found a good subject and developed a rhythm, only to have to stop and reload or change camera bodies as you're reaching a peak. This is true for me, but most especially when covering an event (such as a wedding, for example). I'd rather have a pocket full of partially exposed rolls than to be caught between rolls at a critical time. Besides, film is (relatively) cheap - it's the developing that puts a dent in the wallet - so it's not worth it (to me) to try to squeeze an extra shot or two onto a roll when I could instead be comfortably ready with a fresh roll (depending on the exact circumstances, of course). This is just an observation. If a lens I own says 18mm on it and it's really 18.75mm, it's no big deal to me, and I'm not going to start building a database of the exact tested focal lengths. Hell, labs probably crop all of our prints, and slide holders crop our slides, more than that. I can always step back an inch or so, if I need the extra coverage. I can see it all now, L00K! Re: ME Super (et al) Shutter Speed Buttons
If you want to try this, though, be ~very~ careful - use only a ~tiny~ drop of super glue, and, after applying the drop, hold the button down while you keep turning the mode dial back and forth - you don't want any excess glue freezing the mode dial in place - g. I've done this previously to two different ME Supers, and I'm actually about to do it again with an ME Super SE (enlisted for use where ~quiet~ is needed - the LX's, as much as I love 'em, for some occasions are just too darn LOUD - g). When I say I've done this previously, I'm referring to performing this simple modification previously, ~not~ to freezing the mode dial in place (fortunately - g). But, I'm sure that doing that damage ~is~ possible, so do be careful. Fred - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. At least 6 rolls Velvia, 6 rolls Provia F. Never any B+W. Will push both if needed. I'll have more in car and will carry more in pack if I'll be away from the car for some time. Relying on my memory, increasingly age-damaged, I believe Modern Photography used to do that for lenses they reviewed, and as I recall none were exact. I believe I read in one of the reviews that the industry standard was to be within 5% of the rated focal length. So a claimed 20mm lens could be anywhere between 19 and 21. No big deal. I HATE the idea of running out of film. I usually buy the Fuji 4-packs and have at least 4 rolls in the bag all the time. Film suggestions needed
Hi, With the recent discussion on film, I was wondering what you all would suggest for the following, which is my primary photography subject- cars. What would be an excellent print film to photograph cars, both static and on the track, daytime, although some cars may be under a tent or in a garage trackside. I need something that can be used for both purposes, as I plan to keep two bodies loaded, one w/ a telephoto for the action stuff, one with a wide angle for the static shots. I'm thinking Fuji Superia X-tra 400, as that is what I used at Porsche Rennsport Reunion with fairly good results and even better at the Lime Rock Vintage Festival. With my recent camera acquisitions, I will be using a SP1000 w/ 24mm f3.5 for the static shots or a SuperProgram w/ 28mm f2.8, and a SuperProgram w/ 70-210mm f4 for action shots, I might add a tripod and I might add a Rear Converter A 2-XS.
