November 2003 PUG - my fovourities
Having a holiday today here in Poland I found some time to browse through this month gallery. As other said it - many very good photos. I'm not going to comment on all as I lack skills and time to do so, but wil mention some that grabbed my attention most when browsing. Australasian Harrier by Max McRae - a professional shot - pin sharp when it has to be, blurred elsewhere. Very nice colours. And the fact of being taken in the zoo can't be seen in the photo which I like. Very nice opening to the gallery. Face to face by Jan van Wijk - very well cought but showing nice composition as well For Those Who Hate Cats - a Double Dose by Lon Williamson - if you wanted to get on those cat haters' nerves you probably have done the best. Everything is so cute in this photo that it must work the way you planned Dreamy Autumn Afternoon by Kathleen Leickly - that's a very well used photo manipulation technique Blue by Dag Thrane - that background is very nicely placed but the photo has much more to it which I just can't name. I just like it. Luminous by Graham Lyth - that is very graphical photo and a very nice one. I guess you made a great use of this place. Don't know how I would feel with with sand in my lens for 18 months but the result is worth it. Nupsstadur by Thrainn Vigfusson - great, bold colours, the contrast between the stormy sky and bright car is very pleasing. Parallel Spiral by BigButt - great juxtaposition, seems almoust like two photos merged together. My Chevy by Paul Stenquist - another professional photo. Nice car, very nicely placed. Water And Air by Wessel Sijl - great atmosphere! Scale by Simon King - a great sense of scale is here for sure, as well as nice tonality. I Laugh in the Face of Danger! by Catherine Wilson - I just like it. Great kids portrait. Father by Sandor Lueff - a portrait that tells something about the person. Too bad it's more pentax and less father but I like it anyway. There are also many great photos beside those. Cheers, Maciej

My March PUG picks
I've redone William Robb's chalenge this month - I've browsed through thumbnails and picked one that caught my eye the most. I've picked Carine by Alexander Bauer. I was eager to find out how Alexander used this as I tried something very similiar few years ago wit my self-portrait (before cutting my hair). Not to great surprise I found out that Alex did much better then I did. It is not only good thumbnail but a great PUG photo as well. Again I picked a colour photo - I guess that when browsing thumbnails only bw photos have a much less chance to get picked - at least in my case. Now to browsing the whole gallery - what a pleasure - as allways. Innocence by Mark Mangum There is something in this photo that makes it something more that a family album snapshot. The composition is very classical and it works very well in this case. Kids are nicely sharp while the background is nicely blurred giving sense of location but not being distractive. This would work as some magazine shot easily IMO. Your comment make me think a bit more about it. Great. Working On The Computer by Michael Cross That's a very joyfull photo. Love the way Eva stands ouy of the background not only due to right DOF but also a difference in brightness. And she is just adorable. I would only like to dodge the hand with the mouse a bit. Are We Having Fun Yet by Butch Black This is funny :-))) Tree on the Hill by Petr Pazour Great sharpness and colours. I like the contrast between dark sky and mountains and brightly lighted grass and tree. Nice composition as well. Sunset by Alan Chan Nice mood. I love the colours in the sky. I might crop a bit from the bottom though - but the tree has to stay. Maid of the Mist by Bob Blakely I like the way that blue tint adds something spooky to the photo. It looks almoust like a ghost ship. Love the way the tiny waves in the bottom look - white foam on dark blue water. Earth and Sky by Harald Rust Great. Looks like a painting to me. I like the amount of abstraction this photo shows. Low Tide by Facit Great, unreal pattern. Moonset by Mark Cassino This is great! I can feel the cold in the photo. As you say - composition is almoust classical in the photo and it works. Nice contrast between the sky and the red lighthouse. Red Wing by YP Wan Don't know why but I love it. Bike by David Mann Very nice. Looks like a closing scene in the movie. All the info about cast and crew is about to roll into the frame as the boy leaves toward the sun. Columns by Peter J. Alling Nice, graphical, image. Dunas by Luiz Cruz I have no idea what it is and it makes this photo even more interesting. Apat of that great DOF and form study. Filter Cover Reflections by frank theriault I have a weakness toward this kind of photos and the subject. This one is very well executed but I would like somethik diffrent to reflect to make it better. Right Way by Patrick Rendulic Great contrast in the image and details in the sky are impressive. Must give IR some more try as soon as summer is back. Well it turned out I wrote more than I was planning to do and there are still photos worth mentioning left, for sure. This is great gallery this month. Welcome to Collinwood! http://film.wp.pl/p/film.html?id=2127h=2170451

Dnia 26-02-2003 o godz. 23:15 Chris Brogden napisal: The myth about digital offering more DOF is partly true, though. To get a DSLR lens that magnifies things as much as a 50mm lens for a 35mm film camera does, you'll need to go with a DSLR lens with a focal length of roughly 35mm (assuming a 1.5x conversion factor). When a subject looks the same size through a 35mm lens and a 50mm lens, the shot taken with the 35mm lens will have more DOF than that taken with the 50mm lens. AFAIK if your subject is of the same size the DOF is exactly the same regardles of focal length used. In DSLR we have a bit different case - the subject is not projected on media as the same size - it is smaller in APS DSLR and than magnified so it seems as it uses the same part of the frame as in regular SLR. So here we have a case od the same subject distance giving as the same frame with different focal lengths. And this results in greater DOF on APS DSLR. Maciej Konkurs Europa Moich Marze. Note, though, that the camera will probably not operate very well with alkalines. They will work, but digital cameras drain alkalines in a hurry. So the use of AAs is most likely to mean rechargeables. That's what I was going to add. When we got M**ta Dimage 7Hi at work my boss was realy eager to try it out. The rechargeables that came with the camera had to be charged so he went and bought 4 alkalines (or at least that's what he told me). The camera didn't even turn on fully... DBID=NEWS_543027 you can find information about new Fuji films, includinf Velvia 100ISO: New Professional Films Debut In 1990, Fujifilm transformed the world of professional imaging with its launch of the first FUJICHROME Velvia color transparency film. Today, Fujifilm once again redefines the color reproduction palette for professional photographers, with the introduction of FUJICHROME Velvia 100F Professional. This new color transparency film brings the ultra-high-saturated color of Fujifilm's renowned Velvia to the ISO 100 speed class. Employing the industry's first Multi-Color-Correction Layer technology in a color reversal film, as well as new coupler and emulsion technologies, FUJICHROME Velvia 100F Professional delivers world-class color fidelity, reproducing the finest nuances of hues that test the limitations of conventional films, along with ultra-fine granularity (RMS** granularity of 8***). Is this the case? If so, how is this effect created? It's probably a film called Agfa Scala. Kodak also sells a kit for processing regular B+W as slides. It's called the KODAK T-MAX 100 Direct Positive Film Developing Outfit, but I think it can be tweaked for other films. It could be Agfa Scala (ISO 200 BW positive) as Tom pointed out http://www.agfa.com/photo/products/film/professional/bwrevfilm/ or a similiar product made by Czech foto factory FOMA - Fomopan R100 (ISO 100 BW positive) http://www.foma.cz/en/prod/cbneg.htm http://www.foma.cz/en/tech_listy/F_pan_R.htm There is also a posibility of developing the negative in the process mentioned by Tom owhich will result in having a positive. I think a company called Tetenal also makes such a kit. And one more option I also encountered is shoting the BW prints on color positive film. I've seen something like this done on Fuji Provia 100F and the results weren't that bad. Tonality suffers on such a process but when stuck between color slides the BW ones were really catching the eye. Cheers Maciej --- Wszystko, czego potrzebuje nowoczesna kobieta! Rather short, I think, compared to some of the suggested exposure tables that I've seen, and sure enough, the negatives are so badly underexposed as to be useless. That's too short, really. If there was no additional light source than the LX should have made a longer exposure. I can't imagine, what the cause was. But maybe you have a look at http://www.designshed.com/lostframe.html There are some interesting tips and links concerning night photography. I really like that page... Maybe, Steve, you have some exposure correction set? Other thing is, that Ilford XP2 needs some corrections due to reciprocity failure. If I recall correctly it is about 4x the metered time at 30sec - so it would be 2min exposure. But apart from that, 30sec in theese conditions seems rather short exposure. Maciej --- Daj si pozna! As Forrest Gump said in the movie shit happens... To make it easier for you I can tell that it also happenned to me. I loaded my newly purchased MX and had taken some nice Christmas shots of my family and begun to get suspicious when couple days later I managed frame 39. I thought that there might be something in the winding mechanism that allows to move the lever without moving the film (some sort of clutch) so rewinded the film and had it developed ordering a set of prints. To my dismay it turned out that after I winded from frame 1 to 2, film slipped from the taking spool and all the shots were made on the same piece of film. Of course I was ready to blame it on a camera malfunction but after questioning the PDML I found it tough lesson to watch the rewind knob as I wind the film. To cheer you even more I can tell you that it also happened to other people from PDML :-) Cheers Maciej - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: my 1st IR (sfx)
- Original Message - From: Frantisek Vlcek [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have scanned few photos from my first roll of IR [...] Please critique and comment! [...] oops: the address: www.volny.cz/fotof/scapes/ir It seems that you've managed better with your firs IR roll than I did. Mine HIE looks much overexposed. It's so dark that I can't even get a decent preview using my cheap PF1800U scanner. I tried to make a contact but the exposure differs so much that I couldn't get more than a half of frames to show details. I only managed (due to time shortage) to print only one frame and it looks promising. I didn't use the 125/f11 rule and now I can only blame myself. I will have to try again. But back to your photos. It seems that you got the exposure right or at least much better than I did. My favourite is 7FO..jpg. I love the contrast between the dark water and almoust white leaves floating on the surface. There is also very bright plant in the lower left corner that stands out nicely from the water. Even if it's some ordinary weed it really catches my eye here. Trees in the backgroud don't show stunning IR effects but it's beneficial for this shot - they still get this mysterious touch but don't distract from the firs plane giving it along with a very nice sky a very deceant background. I also liked 3FO.jpg. Very nice composition, lovely sky and a bit IR mystery. 6FOjpg is also nice but I would like to have a little bit more of dark parts in the picture. Too bad the sky didn't turn out as dark as usually as it would balance the shot neatly. Maybe I should look at it as a high-key? It would fit the pattern but somehow it still lacks something. Probably it would gain if seen as a print. Cheers from Poland Maciej - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Which Pentax flash for MZ-M?
- Original Message - From: Andy Phillips [EMAIL PROTECTED] What would be a suitable flash for this camera? The Pentax web site suggests the AF201SA, but gives no details about this flash's capabilities. I think what Mike needs is a small flash with auto (ie aperture-set thyristor) and manual modes. As far as I can tell from the manual, the MZ-M does not do TTL or communicate with zoom flash. I use it with MZ-M and MX. AF201SA is a very simple flash. It has Guide Number of 20 (meters), covers picture area of 35mm lens. It has a manual mode and an auto mode (thyristor). When used with MZ-M it sets the aperture according to iso speed (f5,6 for ISO100) (lens has to be set to A otherwise yu have to set an aperture yourself). Also, when the flash has charged, actual shutter speed can't be shorter than 1/100th. If something shorter is set it would be overrulled. This is what I found from my experience: - it's dedicated - this flash is easy to use when using it as a flash in a compact camera - set to auto and let it do the work - I miss the bounce/swivel capabilities - I missed couple of times the possibility of setting a flash to gice just a part of light power needed - I would like to have a coverage of at least 28mm - I could use a bigger GN - I guess I need a new flash ;-) From what I know (but I haven't dig that yet) you can get with a better flash for the price od AF201SA, and it would be worth to look at some used ones with more features. Re: May PUG comments from Poznan, Poland
From: Jan van Wijk I kind of like it myself, it adds another color to the whole palette of slightly different raspberries ... All in all it's your photo. But if I had a chance to re-shot this subject I would either eliminate this yellow raspberry or move it closer to one of strong points. I still think, that in the way it is now it causes too much distraction - it attracts the eye so much that I end up looking just at this one raspberry. There are also some dust pieces or something similar on the fruits here and there and it also distracts attention from fruits. Well, I am not sure you can recognize them very well on the small JPG, but all the dust pieces I can see are actually parts of the raspberries ... Well, I figured that out but just didn't express myself clearly I guess. Even though they're parts of the fruits I still think that the image could do without them. Especially the blueish one in the left/lower corner bothers me. It stand out really strong from the dark raspberry. As for the perfect image I would remove it. But it is still a very good one. I still stand for it. I find your image really, really good. It's just that I tend to be much more picky on other's pictures that on my own. I like your picture, and no, I didn't shot anything as good in that subject myself. And I fear it's not only because of equipment shortenings :-( To balance my opinion I'd like to add that I like the way the raspberries are lighted - there is a lot of details in the hoghlights and in the shadows as well. There is a very pleasant DOF in the picture. The way that light reflects from the fruits adds a third dimension to the photo. I would love to see a nice and big print from it which it certainly deserves. Regards Maciej Marchlewski - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Having just priced the filters locally after deciding to start BW, these are worth a try (8 for the price of 1). James Well the price is IMO normal. You can get a Russian filter (M49) for abou 4 USD in Poland so 24 USD for the set seems an usual price. OTOH I've been told by the camera store clerk (who uses Pentax as well) that those cheap Russian filters are of poor quality. He said, that even my 25-80/4-5.6 would suffer after putting them on in terms of image quality. He suggested a Sunpack filter - the're about 13 USD a piece. I got red, yellow and green but that's all they've got in store. They will get more along with a flash delivery so it can some time. But 24 USD won't probably ruin your budget so they're worth a try. Re: How to use polarizer on rear filter lenses
- Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am considering to buy a super wide angle lens (17-20 mm) but many of these lenses use rear filters. As I will use this lens mostly for landscapes and, in that case, polarizer is essential, how do we use polarizer in such lenses? Is it possible? Hello Alex! If you want to darken the sky you may try some gray grad-filter or some other suitable colour grad. To mount it on a wide angle lens without a filter mount you can try a square filter holders with an aprioprate adapter. I know that Cokin has some sort of adapter that doesn't require a filter mount - it's holded by securing it against sides of the lens. You can use it for a square polarizer, too, but keep in mind the effect mentioned by some already - the effects might be uneven throught th frame. I was going to do a test in the store with such an adapter and my Mir 20/3.5 lens but never got to do it. Some people also suggest to use a bit of wire to mount a filter. The problem might be if the lens has some sort of of sun shade as my Mir does - its built in - two pieces of metal stand out of the lens above and under the front element. That would allow light to enter beetween a filter and the lens which can lead to contrast drop and another bad things. Theese are just my ideas as I never tried any polariser on my 20mm lens and I'm no filter expert as well. Maciej - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. - Original Message - From: Bojidar Dimitrov [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi all, Some of you have already done this, but now there is a page with easy-to-undesrtand instructions on how to build a remote release for the SF, Z/PZ and MZ/ZX cameras. Check it out at http://www.kajko.wdb.pl/wezyk/e_wezyk.html Cheers, Boz Thanks for advertising it Boz! And thanks again for the photo. Please, feel _really_free_ to comment on the instructions - I've just translated the polish version of the site. I've put it up as an easiest way to answer questions on how to make the cable relase frequently asked on polish foto news group. In the original there is more on the switch modyfication as it might be easy to find in Poland but I removed it from translation. If you feel that anything could be improved or explained more clearly - let me know! Don't hesitage even to pick on my English - I've translated in at work so there are mistakes for sure. Photos of cakes and ice-cream
Some time ago I've asked about advice how to make photos of cakes and ice-creams. Althoug I was very nervous about I got some acceptable results. You can take a look at them here: http://www.kajko.wdb.pl/chaltura It's a page automatically generated and I just noticed that the images had been resampled while generating the code but you still will get the idea. I got to eat the ice-cream - it was so sweet that after that I only asked for coffe w/out suger and refused any more sweets. I guess I can treat it as my firs pro assigment - I didn't get paid for the shots directly but this has beed included in my salary. All comments welcome. Food photography advice needed
Hi all! Again I'm seeking your advice. I've been assigned a task at work and have some doubts about it. I have to go to client's place and make photos of ice-cream and cakes. I can use my MZ-M or MX (but I guess it's the least important) A50/1.7, FA35-80/4-5.6, A135/2.8 and Mir20/3.5 (the last two would be useless I think). As for lighting I guess my AF201SA would do but I can use the studio lighting from work (with sofboxes, umbrellas etc) with Gossen flashmeter. I'm not sure if I can take all of the lamps as one has a stand that's huge and would be probably impossible to put into car. There's no way they can send the stuff to our studio :-( Of course I have a tripd for the camera. Maybe someone can share a good advice or some nice link on how to approach this task. Irish Draught and February PUG
So I finally got to sit and have a deep look into this month's gallery. I've got something from the upper shelf in the store to stand up for the PUG but it didn't work out - the pictures suprised me with the quality again. I like a lot of stuff from this month and this are some that worked the best for me at this moment: - BristleCone Pine by Bruce Dayton - You got me interested in those pines, too. Very well lited with enough of sharpness behind to recognize the background. Very good use of DOF :-) - The view from a chess board. by Byron Butler - great perspective! Seems like you've pushed this lens' DOF to its limits. If not for the commentary I might ask the same question as your co-workers did. - Green Zen by Flavio Minelli - a quote from you: This picture inspires calm and meditation, just like those japanese gardens. - true, true! (and I'm not saying this because of the beverage). Great pic! - Leaf by Ed Keeney - a very nice one, a little abstract image. Except for very well blurred background I enjoyed the colors that bring all the positive feelings I have when thinking of autumn. - Peachy by Steve Larson - very tasty one. So it seems I preffered shallow depth of field for this theme. Don't know why... And then there is a special word of appreciation for having shalow and deep DOF in one shot: - Macro-wide angle by Dan Scott - very nice trick. Which high speed BW film?
Hi! My friend asked me to make some photos of his band and I need your help with it. I own him a favor so I couldn't refuse even though I was tempted doing so. Making photos for pure fun is something totaly different for me than making them for somebody. I warned him that I'm an ameteur but he said that he and his fellows liked my photos that I have on my website and like to give me a try. They want indoor shots of the band and portrait like shots of each member (lucky for me only four of them). In addition they want some of their equipment photographed as well. It all would have to be done in a place where they practice - some technical rooms in the dorms - I think without windows (it would be in the evening anyway). What I have is AF-201SA flash (don't know if even bother to take it) and two 500 watt halogen, garden lamps. They want the pictures in BW (no way to do something else with this lighting anyway). As I've been experimenting with it a bit with this lamps (bought them very recently) it seem that for reasonable short time something like ISO 1600 or even 3200 would be necessary. And now for the question - which film would you suggest to use? Maybe to different ones for people and gear shooting? I've heard good opinions about Fuji Neopan 1600, but maybe something else would be a better choice? Maybe some other film push processed? I normally use Ilford XP2 (ISO 400) and process everything in the lab - the BW films would be processed in a pro lab as well. I might give a try something with a big grain but not for all the shots. Help! Any other tips would also be welcomed. Thanks Maciej Marchlewski - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
Why do you choose or stay in Pentax? Why not N, C or M? My answer is simple! I want the quality of Pentax lenses. How about you? Well. I don't have such a great story about me and Pentax as I read here. If I was given a Pentax camera by grandfather as Take was I would stick to it forever specialy know that I have learned a lot of respect for him. Daniel wrote about his lucky buy (because how you can call a situation when there was no M in stock for him to buy?) and staying with the brand for 30 years - that's impressive! Than as Emilio wrote: Maybe all we are different, original people??. I just like to do something different than others or at least in a different way. And since Pentax is not as popular in Poland as N, C, M are it was my pick even before I've learned about it's quality. I guess I'm a bit snobbish... Gabor wrote: I like to mix old MF gear with the latest AF ones without any unnecessary limitations. No other company offers this possibility. Also, SMC is great. It definitely works. No question about that. Sad truth is that I have to pay for it :-( Getting C FD lenses might be cheaper - at least in an amateur range. But hey, I'm snobbish! I guess, I went for Pentax because the fact that I could use the MF and AF lenses interchangeably although I was a bit to optimistic about how cheap I can get those MF ones. In communistic era Pentax wasn't officialy present on Polish market so there isn't so many used lenses as I wish to be offered. But I hope to get into ebay soon - I just have to solve a cheap way to send payments - or maybe I don't wont to do it? I'm not having too much cash allready... :-) Than, what I really loved about new Pentax cameras was the desing that makes them simple to use. Only playing with Russian SLR Zenit before Pentax I knew how to take pictures right away! The mistery with my friends EOS 3 starten with an uneasy to find on-off switch... And now, I will stick to Pentax just to have the priviledge of being a part of PDML :-) Maciej PS: Collin wrote abut sticking to one brand and Camera owners are the same. Look at the newsgroups and the sparring between Canon Nikon owners, and the arrogance of Leica Contax owners. Blad owners look down on Fuji, Mamiya Pentax, but Each of them knows the real truth. We had a saying going on the Polish foto news group: Thera are owners od Nikons, user of Canons and people that are making photos with Pentax. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: BW and filters and C41 BW film
. Not bad at all. - Total score: 89 pts. - PP Verdict: That this is a non-professional film should not put you off as results are very good. There are no problems with grain or tonality at correct exposures and it represents very good value for money. PP's final verdict: I love a black white, but no longer have a darkroom so C-41 mono emulsions are the answer. I would be hapy to use any of theese films and they do have a reassuring exposure margin. If you want mono than Ilford's XP2 is probably the one for you. Konika's Monochrome VX is an excellent choice in situation with contrasty light but under normal conditions more punch may be desirable. Kodak has three similar performers. Black White Select is a fine general purpose film of very high quality and will suit most people's needs. T400CN is very nice too, offers excellent value, and comes a close second. But it's the new kid on the block that comes out on top. Portra 400BW gives lovely contrast, excellent grain structure and good mono on colour paper. It just wins. That's for the summary. Each film had also a sample print (portrait) shown along with a architecture shoot made on eposures from -3 stops to +3 stops from the correct one. Some general description was also included but that would be to much to copy. Hope it was of some use for you as it got long. Maciej Marchlewski - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. This will cock the shutter without advancing the film. Just one small addition: First crank the film rewind knob until you feel light tension on the film (take up the slack in the film can). Then depress the release button and advance the film...like Peter said. Thanks for the info. I've just tested it with some old film and it seems that I got everything right. Just from the curiosity - when there is no film loaded, with a rewind button depressed, mowing the advance lever causes the take-up spool to rotate although two weels to the left are not moving. When I loaded the film it didn't move. So, the question is - is the advance lever's movement lost on some type of clutch so the film isn't winded which would cause the perforation to be torn? Re: 80/1.8 CZJ going cheap in Poland
Since there seems to be a problem translating this auction info I'll give you a hand but this will surely dissapoint you. This auction is also on www.allegro.pl - this is the largest auction in Poland but as far as I know it isn't connected to ebay in any way. And now for the sad part - auction with title: Poszukuje PANCOLAR 1,8 / 80mm M42 (aukcja numer 3640024) is a posting of someone wanting to buy such a lens. Sorry - I warned you at the begining. Even if it was a selling offer, it is extremaly hard to find a bargain offer on Polish sites - there is to few articles and it isn't hard to browse them all so people that now something about it usually don't let bargains pass. There has been Buy It Now feature added lately so maybe this will give us some chance but photo equipment in Poland is much more expensive than in the USA which affects the prices of used gear. Odp: Anyone shoot MF exclusively?
- Original Message - From: Delano Mireles [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi all, I'm in the process of searching for a MF camera and was wondering if anyone here shoots MF exclusively? Trying to decide if I should ditch my ZX-5n, upgrade my digital olympus for snapshots and go MF for everything else. I'm really wanting to get into portrait photography (mainly children) and it really seems like MF is the way to go. Any opinions? Thanks, Delano Well, I'm using MF cameras only as I only own MX and MZ-M. My only AF lens is cheap zoom that came with MZ-M (FA 35-80/4-5,6) and only nice thing I can tell about it is the way it communicates with MZ-M giving me all information even in M or Av mode. For the price it performs well, but apart from it I own only SMC-A primes which make different class, but you probably already know this. Among many on this list, as I suppose, I am a proof that working only with MF is possible. You may have some problems while photographing kids as day tend to move quicker than you would expect but for portraits MF ss just fine. I find it much fun. Odp: Either myself or MX not so wonderful
From: Shel Belinkoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is it possible for film to slip from take-up spool during shooting? Yes, but usually only at the beginning of a roll. It's happened to more than one photographer. Thanks. That's the most encouraging reply. But sadly, doesn't bring my shots back ;-) Although no Pulitzers there, I was looking forward to see the results. Thanks to Bob S., Cotty and Tom (graywolf) for their tips. I've tried stucking the leader and then placing the cartdridge into right place and it seems to be a better way to load the film - if it is stuck really poorly it will slip already at this stage. Either myself or MX not so wonderful
Good evening everybody Not very nice story to tell but with a educational thought at the end. Being sure I managed to learn how to operate my MX (how hard can it be) I loaded it with film a shot to have some shooting. I did everything in the way the manual tells to do - I've putted the end of film beetween the pins, advanced couple times checking the rewind knob at the same time (I've used to shot with zenit camera) - everything seemed OK. So I did some shooting. When Christmas came I still had some frames left so I decided to burn them with a family (my MZ-M was loaded with BW film). Did some shooting and realised I'va allready reached frame 36 - so I rewound the film. It happened very easily - even too easily. I got scared that I might have rip the film from the cartdridge due to winding over the last frame but the film seemed to be OK back in the cartdridge. Today I went to the photo lab to have it developed. To my great dismay it turned out, that the whole shooting exposed only one frame and a third. The firs frame was exposed correctly but next was done only after moving by one third of the frame, than every frame was done in the same spot. The rest of the film is clean. I'm sure I've checked the rewind knob at the beginning but don't recall doing it later. Is it possible for film to slip from take-up spool during shooting? How deep should I push the leader between the pins? Or maybe is it the camera fault? I did some tests with an old film today and it seems to work OK. Now the educational part. I've read in the past not to photograph anything important with a new camera and I found the hard way how true it is. I still have a christmas tree at home but the atmosphere and presents are gone. Also developed the film from MZ-M and it seems that every frame is at least printable (can't really judge exposure from the neg). Should have used this one... Another thing - I've seen lately few posts on the list with a statement that SC-1 focusing screen is hard to find. Is it because it is MX focusing screen (are they hard to find in general) or it is because it is the one that was supplied with the camera (it looks like the one to me) so not many of them were produced due to low demand? Just wanted to share the story - maybe it will be of some advice to someone. Maciej Marchlewski - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. - Original Message - From: Shel Belinkoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 24, 2001 1:29 AM Subject: Re: Odp: My impressions of the MIR 20mm f3.5 M42 lens; a Super Tak20/4.5 for sale thinking about getting a MIR 47K 20/2.5. Do you have any thoughts about that lens? From what I've heard the f/3,5 version is better. Can't find the post with that opinion right now (probably lost during system reinstall). On the other hand, f/2,5 version is said to be avaible with Pentax K mount while f/3,5 isn't (at least in Poland) and you gain about one aperure stop. It's possible to convert the lens into K mounted - that's the way I bought mine - it's a great improvement for me as I find working with a K/M42 a pain in the neck. Regardles of the conversion I still have to stop the aperture down prior to shooting if I like to focus on the wide open. Haven't got any pictures with it (except for one that doesn't show anything) but the build quality looks fine. It is MC MIR-20M 3.5/20 so it's multicoated but the coating is worse than Pentax one (which is _SUPER_ MC so no doubts about that ;-) - some seriou flare can be seen allready without taking pictures while playing against the light source. Mine doesn't have CCCP nor Russia imprinted on it but it looks as a newer one, and sadly it didn't came in a hard leather case (as I suspected Russian lens to) but in a soft case with a hard case for filters which looks as a case for something else in fact. Three rear mounted filters were included: UV, yellow and green. I haven't found out yet if presence of any is necessary for right focusing as in case of some other Russian wides, so I keep the UV on. Works without problems with my MX and MZ-M. Don't know if I have been of any help but that's what I know. Maciej Marchlewski - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Love at the first sight?
Hello all Pentaxers! What I'm about to write would not be anything new to many of you but I just want to share it. Yesterday I went with fellow snappers from my town for a little photo trip. Weve spent a whole day walking through the parts of our city that still remained close to how nature formed them. Some stuff created by men also got its way onto films. It was a very pleasent experience for me as it was first trip of that kind that I've attended. The weather was very kind - it was raining on Friday, it is massivly cloudy today (Sunday) but the Saturday was really sunny but really cold - the night before was the first with temperature below zero degrees (C) and during the day it didn't get much warmer. I found in a brutal way that my jacket is a winter jacket but only inside the car but despite this I really enjoyed the day. Hopefully among all the shots I've made there will be something worth of PUG. Apart from picture taking pleasure I was faced with another pleasure. One of my friends has brought a LX he bought last month or so. That was my firs time to play with this camera but I'm allready sure I love it. Despite all the problems it can show because of it's age I really liked it's feel and the way it worked. In this comparision my MX look like junk - because there is more. This LX is nearly new: the owner told us of how he wanted to complain for something in the shop so he picked the subject of scratched bottom plate, but guess what - it wasn't the plate that was scratched but the protective foil they put on new equipment. The camera is in outstanding condition. The sad thing about it is the story behind the purchase. On monday morning someone posted on Polish news group that there is a LX in a second hand store in Poznan (that's where I live). So I thought - okey, after work I'm going to see it. Than about noon someone writes it is allready gone. It was sold for 2000PLN (about USD500). And now, when I've seen it I know that this afternoon, if it was still there I would buy it, despite the fact that it would hit my plastic hard. Not to make it too long - I just wanted to share with you with a joy of photographing and handling an LX. I understand now, why LX is so loved. MX does meter the light wirh aperture full open so it doesn't metter if I set f/2 or f/22, or does it do somehow differently? I've just read Alan's answer so I know what's going on. Now I see it - there is a chart on p.22 showing for what shutter speeds I get green LED reading depending on ISO setting. Thank you very much - that's a great relief for me. Also thanks for not giving me RTFM which would be apprioprate in this case :-) This list has been put up as an example of how people should behave on discussion lists in an article in Polish photo magazine (in an article about MZ-S). Re: November PUG first impressions
River Of Gold by Maciej Marchlewski - well done on your first submission (mine also this month) small tip, one thing I do always is look at the scan desaturated and see if it looks better in b/w, I tried this with yours and for me it works better - great shot Thanks Tim. I didn't suspect to get any comment on my photo so I really appreciate yours. From this moment I can see at leat couple ways to use the situasion - maybe one would work better - but I'm pleased with the result. I've tried mono version as you've suggested and it's a totally different photo - something else catches the eye. The reason I've submitted it in color is that I made it this way. I've started to think if shooting bw has a sense today as I can allways get a bw print from color film and I'm forced to use C41 bw film anyway (no darkroom) but I like to challenge myself to get into bw thinking allready during composition not after comparing the results. Now I'm doing only bw (frankly speaking only done couple of rolls) and maybe I will have something to post on PUG soon. I've looked at your photo (I didn't have time to take a solid look at all of the pictures :-( ). I also like it. I like this kind of portraits. Too bad you can't see where it was taken - at first I thought it was on the bus or something similiar - due to the nature of portrait photography everything out of the window is blurred so you can't see the height. But you can see a fascination in his face. Btw - also looks very nice as a blackwhite one :-) Greetings Maciej - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: manual k-mount body
From: Geoff Moes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: manual k-mount body I would highly recommend the MX, I'm on my way with buying a second body and have already choosen MX so I'm very glad to hear opinion like this. Just beware that the light seal foam on the lens mount and back door deteriorate and need to be replaced. I know that back door sealing may become old and start to let the light in - is it fixable with a mouse pad in case of MX? That's the first time I hear about a seal on the lens mount that can leak light too. How offten does it happen and how hard it is to repair? Is there any other way to check if the body is light tight other than running a test film throug it? If no, what's the best way to do such a test (in term of film kind, shutter speeds etc.)? If running the film would be a must to do such a test I would like to test other features of the MX at the same time - what should I be especially looking for? Thanks for all help. Agfa Color Multi-Coated 135mm, 1:2.8
Thank you for your kind reply on my previous question about K1000 clones. I'll stick to the originals. Thant's _Pentax_dml nor _SomethingCloseToPentax_dml, isn't it? I have a new one - just one of the kind everyone here loves ;-) Any info or opinions about Agfa Color Multi-Coated 135mm, 1:2.8 - Pentax K mount. At this moment it is about 50 dolars. I've heard an opinion that only Pentax SMC lenses are something you can buy without hesitating. Sorry for disturbing you so much but not even a newbie in a wonderfull world of Pentax. RE: Funny thing I wondered about one night
-Original Message- From: Jeff Eikenberry Subject: Funny thing I wondered about one night We've all seen movies with cameras, but anyone seen a movie with a Pentax shown in it? Didn't mean to move out of the scope of this list, but hey, it is a Pentax question and curiosity killed the cat! Some time ago there was a thread on this list about the latest movie about the Beatles. Someone pointed out the presence of Asashi camera in it. No more details - haven't seen it nor could I clearly recall this thread. Man, the strange things we think about while lying in bed (after the wife goes to sleep, that is) This better be true if your wife is reading this list ;-) Maciej - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: screw mount adaptor
-Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of B. K. Lane Sr. My question is.. is there such a thing? and if so .. what is it called? As far as I know: no, sorry - but I might be wrong so don't worry. If I'm not mistaken at the moment its imposible to build such a thing - a K-mount is bigger than the 42mm screw mount. RE: MZ-S Data Imprinting
Hello! That's me again. What other Pentax 35mm cameras have an option of imprinting exposition details somewhere on the film? - Original Message - From: tom Subject: MZ-S Data Imprinting [...] Hey, that there's data imprinting! RE: SFX InfraRed
Hi! This is my first post to this group so I would like to great everybody here: Hello! I'm a student (MA this year) from Poland. I do not own anything made by Pentax yet but I'm allready convinced to get one as soon as I collect sufficient funds. I think I would go with MZ-M and some nice, bright 50mm lenses for a beginning. I allready know what photo brand is the best so I've joined this group even though right now I,m using russian system (Zenit). Returning to the subject - I got interested in IR photography and have some problems. Are labs that would process such a film correctly popular or is it really hard to find it. I'm thinking about some BW film but I don't have a dark room of my own nor an access to any, leaving me only with the lab option. I would really love to give it a try but I would like to know if it's worth trying without developing prints by myself? Thanks for your help. Maciej P.S. Thats a really nice list to be on. -Original Message- from Bill D. Casselberry Subject: Re: SFX InfraRed Don't let anyone develop the film unless they are familiar with and equipped for handling it entirely in complete darkness. Lots of processors also use IR sensors - don't let them take the film out of the plastic film can in the light, either! - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: No prizes for second place!
From: owner-pentax-discuss On Behalf Of Jim I'm PERFECTLY willing to express my opinion... Shot one was a blurry mess, obviously taken by the owner's cousin or something. I've thrown better pictures I've taken into the trash, knowing they weren't any good. Shot two was really cool, and I enjoyed the third shot very much as well. Mr. Mann, you wuz ROBBED! Jim I'm second in supporting that opinion. The winning photo is some kind of misunderstanding of simplest photo rules - or it is so high art that is beyond mine understanding. Other two are really enjoyable. Greeting Maciej - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions.
