Re: Facebook discussion on sharpness in portraits

2010-12-27 Thread Peter Loveday
To me that's a relatively useless generalisation. There are times you want
a softer look in nature and many times you want a sharp look in portraits.

Sure if you're trying to hide someone's age, you can blur it a bit (not
really any need to use vaseline or a diffusion filter these days), but more
often than not I'd rather reveal the detail, the character, of the subject.

It all comes down to opinion and style at the end of the day, but really I
think you have to assess the subject and the purpose of the photo. No bride
wants to look wrinkly on their wedding day, of course. But a grandmother
and baby in sharp focus can provide a wonderful textural contrast, or an old
bushman with a wonderful face formed by years of experiences can give such a
sense of character.

I'm sure you know this, but for the sake of the conversation.. Soft Focus
is also, to me, a slightly misleading term. What you don't want is for the
subject (esp. eyes) to be out of focus and something else in focus... it
just looks unintentional and unprofessional. If you must, a diffused look
is preferable to an incorrect focus look. Where possible I prefer to use
lighting to soften, or indeed harden, such details too, rather than making a
soft photo.

Yeah, that's part of the moire effect. Many integral
multiples/fractions will give related effects.

I don't think that it is exactly the moire effect, as there
are no true interference, and there are no different-angle grids.

Or, I should say, - this (as well as what Doug originally showed)
would be the most trivial version of it: overlap of several circular
(covering a solid arc) objects (the area covered by each spoke within
the shutter-open time) with the same offset from each other.

It is trivial in the fact that you are not gaining any new periodicity
of the pattern, as what usually is significant in moire.

OK, I know there are some folks around the list that know a lot more
about the physics, optics, and other science surrounding our hobby than
I do. And I'm asking their help in understanding something.

In the following photo, take a specific look at the way that the wheels
and in particular the spokes are rendered. It's a digital capture, but
I've seen the same effect in film captures.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=119672688098162set=a.114665221932242.11964.11662949948

Specifically, notice that the spokes, especially on the rear wheel,
appear mostly as blurs of grey. But also notice that there are specific
highlights that look like slightly blurry spokes themselves. The number
of these artifacts in the photo is identical to the actual number of
spokes on each wheel. I specifically checked after having noticed this
effect in previous shots.

But I don't understand how they get there. I'm suspecting is some sort
of temporal moire thing going on, but I can't envision the mechanism.
And that's the help I'm asking. I'm hoping one of you can explain the
physical mechanism that's leading to those blurry spokes in the wheel
instead of just showing a less peaked, more uniform grey blur.

The shutter speed was 1/250, which is intentionally slow enough to give
the wheels and background a blur while giving me a chance to get a sharp
shot of the body while panning (I shoot almost all of the moving car
shots on the track at 1/250, if you can see the wheels in the shot;
1/125 if it's a slow corner). The car was going about 100 miles an hour
and accelerating as the shot was taken.

Indeed. Having a merging of technologies misusing terminology just confuses
the whole issue. No doubt why most manufacturers go with things like FX

Of course, what is 35mm film? 36x24? Well, maybe for stills. 35mm motion

We are just seeing the overlap of film stuff and digital sensors. So
many lenses were designed for the 35 mm format. We still use medium
format even though the sensor isn't that size. Look at the 645D.
The sensor isn't even close to 6 x4.5, but it was based on that body
design. It will take years (if ever) for a more rational terminology
to emerge, but as JCO points out we all know what it means.
History-laden terminology has a certain charm for many and, it seems,
especially photographers.

I plan to start calling APS-C the happy format and see if it catches on.

I opine (may be wrong, but that's my right) that some 24x36 designed

For my kind of shooting it makes them particularly attractive given

That was the first thing I noticed: No purple fringing. Of course, had

Most likely due to the aperture difference; you've stopped down from f2.8 to

Subject: Pentax Users Gallery (the PUG) - Changes for 2011

G'day all

As you may be aware, Scott has decided to step down as PUGmeister and
I've agreed to try to fill his shoes. May be a forlorn task, but we'll
see...

Just to clarify what the PUG is all about for those new to the list:

The PUG is this list's monthly themed photo gallery - it has nothing to
do with the 'Pentax Photo Gallery' run by Pentax USA. Basically, list
members submit an image based on the monthly theme, the images are
compiled into a gallery and each month the gallery is uploaded for the
enjoyment of all. The galleries are archived permanently and you can go
back as far as 1998 to enjoy the images submitted in the past.

The PUG is hosted on the Komkon server, facilitated by PDMLer Igor
Roshchin, for which we are extremely grateful.

There probably wont be too many obvious changes to the way the PUG
operates. Igor has installed the scripting software for the Submission
Form on Komkon, so there will be a new location for that form but, like
Scott, I'll be compiling the galleries using JAlbum, so they will look
much the same as in the past.

I'll post further details and themes for 2011 in a few days.

Cheers

Brian

Re: Question about flash photography

2010-12-02 Thread Peter Loveday
You might find the metz 40 a bit of a pain with some of these accessories.
A great design in some ways, it suffers from the fact that all accessories
are designed for more normal shaped flashes.

Metz themselves make (made?) a bounce card for it, the Bounce Diffuser
40-73, which I picked up cheap with one of my used 40 series flashes. Dunno
how easy these are to find, but I wouldn't pay too much for one, considering
you could make one easy enough.

Diffusers like stofen, fong, et al, work pretty well where you can get some
bounce. They throw light ut in all directions, and it comes back from all
directions. This is great in normal rooms, etc, but if you're in a huge
hall/theatre the benefit may be minimal. If you're in close enough, some
benefit can be had from a larger unit like a fong, but not so much as a
softbox/large reflector.

The lumiquest SB-III or style softbox diffusers simply work by increasing
the area of the flash, so you'll get softer shadows. Even still, you have to
be reasonably close for these to have a huge effect, but they do work well
at close range.

The other thing it has that you may need is the contacts for 'A' lenses.

So the A in A2X-S has nothing to do with the A as in an A lens? And
A lenses will be essentially M lenses when used with this convertor?

handled the aperture, that's easily possible.

Re: off-camera flash

quick question for those who have tried both - to use a p-ttl flash
off camera would you advise using
a) pentax F (male / female hotshoe adaptor plus sync cable)
b) 3rd party cheapo cable solution
c) wireless, if so, which one?

I've used both the Pentax sets and third party ones without any problems
either way. Nissin make a 'universal' off camera cord that supposedly works
with multiple systems (just comes down to hotshoe pin placement I guess),
but I've not tried it.

I also use the Elinchrom Skyport wireless remotes. Seem to work pretty well

My K5 arrived a few hours ago. My first thought was that it was
defective and wouldn't autofocus. As usual, I'd forgotten to set the
diopter to almost blind. Once I realized that I was the only one not
focusing, I shot a few pics at ISO 6400 and 12800, just for grins. I
converted them from RAW with the default ACR settings. No additional
sharpening. I did increase the exposure a bit on the coke sign, since
the largely white background let it slightly under. Have yet to check
exposure for any necessary standard comp setting, but it looks pretty
close. I also have to check autofocus calibration for all my lenses. I
hate that job, but consider it a necessity with any new camera. Maybe
tomorrow. Anyway, ere are a few pics. All are with the DA* 16-50.

Phase Detect and Contrast Detect AF, then you could just point it at a
target and it would self calibrate the AF.

Indeed - wouldn't that be nice. Pentax?

I have been using faster lenses (77/1.8) for stage productions until now,
but want to get a bit closer with a zoom. Do any of you who have this lens
feel that it will focus reliably in sometimes dim stage lights with a K-7?
Because of the added length, I'm taking a Porter bean bag to use as a rest.

What ISO do I dare use indoor under incandescent lighting from floods? I'm
shooting it entirely RAW, so I can fiddle with color correction later on the
Mac.

What say you? Feedback from the intelligentsia is welcomed, gas-baggy or
not, whoopee cushion or not, and I won't criticize your reading ability. My
only other long telephoto choices are 70-200 2.8 Sigma (10 years old), or a
50-200 Zuiko that I got with my E-1 (but I can use it on my more recent

Re: Monitor advice wanted

The models I'm looking at are the U2410 (NZ$1,099) and U2711 (NZ$1,799).

Ouch, the current RRPs on these here are now $A699 and $A999. I'd wait for
Dell to have a special, unless you're in a hurry. Also do a search for the
almost permanently available coupons, like 15% off monitors, etc. You can
also use a referral cashback site, like http://www.moneybackco.com.au (in
OZ anyways, there must be some equiv).

Here the U2711 recently dropped for $1199 to $999, then they had $200 off
special to $799, then 15% coupon and 7% moneybackco, droped it to around
$630 for me. I now wish I'd bought two :)

I'd be suprised if you don't see some similar price drop there. You can
always call them and see what they can do for you, I've heard a few people
get good discounts that way.

Re: Monitor advice wanted

If you're looking at Dells, I'm pretty happy with my Dell 24 U2408, but
recently ordered a 27 U2711 as Dell had a special which worked out to about
A$630, which I couldn't pass up.

These monitors have a wide-colour gamut, which allows more flexibility in
calibration.

The U2711 is also one of few monitors, along with the likes of the expensive
HP DreamColour series, that supports 30-bit colour. This requires a quadro
level graphics card, though, so you'd be looking at a serious investment.

Anyway, I can't comment on the U2711 quite yet, but certainly the specs look
right, and high res (2560x1440) - I probably would've rather 16:10 than
16:9, but that's getting rarer now. The U2410 is probably another good
option, also wide gamut, 1920x1200.

Note the U2711 won't swivel with its supplied stand. The U2410 will.

Are there any models that offer high quality at good value?

Sadly I don't have the budget for an Eizo but I have been eyeing up the IPS
Dell ones. Apple are out as they don't have DVI. Apart from that I'm

I'd like one that I could rotate to portrait orientation but that's not a
deal-breaker (in fact it could be more of a pain than it's worth).

In addition, what's going on with calibrators these days? I plan to replace

Don't have one, I'm still shooting the K-x (and the K-7 isn't an

doing 90%+ of my shooting on film, mostly with my two Maxxum bodies.

Page 146 of the manual states:

When the interval shooting is set, Extended Bracketing and Multi-exposure

I don't think he wants to do extended bracketing or multi-exposure, just
regular bracketing? If so

I don't have a K7, and my K20D isn't at hand to test right now... but have
you tried changing the custom setting that makes all the bracket shots
happen with a single shutter press, rather than requiring hold or multiple
presses (I think the K20D calls this one-push bracketing) ?

It would seem to make sense that the intervalometer would then trigger
multiple exposures with one press , but I may be wrong.

Thanks to everyone who had information. Turned out moot, the batteries
finally took a charge.

Good to hear it is working again, but I'd say you'd be fine. You can get
both Gel and AGM SLA batteries in larger capacities, though I can't recall
one that'd fit in the QB1+. I have in the past made larger cases to
accommodate bigger cells, though I also often used a separate (ie faster)
charger in these cases. This also allows me to swap (cheap) SLA batteries
without needing more than one battery back, and charge them externally.

The changes in automotive batteries people are talking about are calcium
lead acid batteries. This is not relevant to AGM/Gel SLAs.

It may take it quite a bit longer to charge with the original charger,
though.

Re: urgently need impression about Metz flash

2010-03-09 Thread Peter Loveday
I have both of these also; I'd find it hard to split them, they both perform
well.

The secondary reflector is handy for catchlights, esp. when you can't use
the bounce card thing because you're bouncing off a wall at an odd angle.

I don't really find either menu system particularly more difficult to use.

The Metz will go down to 1/256 power, in 1/3rd steps - the Pentax only 1/64.
Not relevant for 'normal' use, but can be handy for in-close off camera
flash.

Both work fine in Pentax wireless mode.

The Metz full-power flash duration is 1/125 - so if you're shooting at 1/180
full sync, you can't get quite the quoted power out of it - not by a lot,
but you can see a difference in tests. I don't think this is the case with
the Pentax.

Both work in HSS, not sure on power levels here.

Re: How many watt-seconds is the AF-540?

2009-12-25 Thread Peter Loveday

guide number
Watt Seconds
Effective Watt Seconds
BCPS (Beam Candle Power Seconds)

16x the light. However its a largely irrelevant measure; GN is completely
dependant on any sort of reflectors, diffusers, zoom heads etc etc. So on a
white lightening, this figure changes with anything you put on it. As does
the 540, but this is less common of course.

This is of course also why the 540 changes GN with zoom position; the
Watt-Seconds would be the same no matter what; it is an absolute power.

Howeer even this is misleading, as it is the amount of power the flash uses,
not how much light it puts out. Different efficiencies etc can make this
vary somewhat; and it is often only truly useful when comparing a range from
one manufacturer.

I've not seen BCPS much, but I assume its the american or imperial
equivalent of Lux /Lumens/Candela? In any case, this is potentially the
most useful, but least quoted spec.

Re: Does High Speed sync only work in p-ttl?

2009-11-27 Thread Peter Loveday

I decided to check out high speed sync with my K20D and AF540.
Am I missing something or does it only work in p-ttl? It seems that I can
crank the shutter speed up to 1/4000 with the flash in p-ttl, but in
manual it stops at 1/180.

Not really sure, I can't think of any technical reason to disallow it
completely.

What manual power level are you using?

Remember HSS loses (a lot) of power, so you'll never be able to get full,
and at high speeds it'll be very low indeed.

So perhaps try setting 1/16 or something and see if it changes anything.

Re: OT: Vinyl vs. Digital

2009-11-16 Thread Peter Loveday

The same factors apply to CDs.

Audiophile CDs have much better sound quality than the ones you find in
the discount bin at WalMart; especially some of the early CD issues of 60s
70s LPs that were digitized straight from the old LP master tapes
without any kind of re-mixing, re-mastering ... that's why there are
re-issues (one reason anyway).

Indeed. There is a lot of quality variation in all formats.

But its not like CDs are representative of state-of-the-art digital music
formats anyway, nor have been for a long time. Even in consumer equipment,
it's been, what, 10 years since SACD/DVDA came on the scene?

These suffer from exactly what you talk about though, too many are merely
upconversions of CD recordings, themselves often digitized from dodgey
analogue masters.

But a well mastered SACD/DVDA is pretty damn impressive. Just a shame
there's not more stuff being released on them, though its still probably
more than the amount of new stuff released on vinyl :(

Re: How can I fire a flash at 1/1000 secs?

2009-11-14 Thread Peter Loveday

As it seems that flash synch disabled above X-synch speeds is more
than a Pentax only situation, the ball must be in Jobo's court to find
a solution.

It may not be Pentax only, but I think both Nikon and Canon get this right,
so I doubt Jobo really care :(

Isn't there any other connection/outlet where a camera
provides an impulse coincident with exposure?

Perhaps on the multi-pin grip connector. Dunno.

Nikons have this kind of ability on their 10 pinconnector. Canon probably
has a similar option.

make the GPS unit in an SCA-3xxx version that could
spoof the camera into believing it was mounted with a high
speed flash.

A SCA version would add another A$100 to the cost for the 3702 adapter,
which seems less than ideal me. Still, it would give it platform
independence (rather than them releasing a version for every system).

If I were to bother attempting to build such thing, I'd just do a pentax
dedicated one anyway. Firstly, its all I need, and secondly I have no idea
how I'd get hold of a SCA spec to implement it that way.

Re: How can I fire a flsh at 1/1000 secs?

2009-11-13 Thread Peter Loveday

in a serious vein, my son discovered that his Nikon D70, when using a
wireless trigger, will not only fire a flash at 1/500 to 1/2000 sec,
it will also sync. We tried it with my Oly EP-1 and it does the same
at 1/500 sec.

Indeed, this is expected with the D70. It's one of its great features - it
uses an electronic shutter at speeds above x-sync. That is, the mechanical
shutter only ever goes up to 1/250 or whatever it is,then faster speeds are
done electronically. Allows flash sync at any shutter speed, which is great
for things like overpowering daylight with your flash(es).

I'd love to see this feature from pentax (as an option, if need be), but I'm
not holding my breath.

2009-11-13 Thread Peter Loveday

I thought the modern offerings had a burst mode for high speed flash?

So did I. But I'm not too sure anymore :-(

If you're referring to high speed sync (HSS) flash modes, then yeah all half
modern pentax cameras support this.

This doesn't really help, though. The camera only does HSS if it detects a
dedicated flash capable of it, and also does the triggering using a somewhat
different protocol with multiple pulses on one of the flash interface pins,
and the triggering uses what Pentax call special flash emission process,
which covers triggering of such things as PTTL (preflash), HSS, wireless,
etc.

But without it thinking it has a dedicated flash, it doesn't trigger
anything. And even with one, you'd need something that understood pentax
dedicated flash protocol in order to provide a trigger signal from it.

All we really need, is an option to just trigger the hotshoe normally at any
shutter speed.

NO! I did not mis-type. The 222 Pistol Grip Ball Head also has a quick
release plate, and the Ball Head release lever is vertical, so you can
use it with either hand, and have the lever facing any way round to your
most comfortable position. The 322 has a horizontal grip and lever which
seem like it would be restricting, unless it swivels so the left hand
fingers can squeeze the trigger.

The 322 can be used horizontally (left or right handed), or vertically,
depending how you set it up (the mount for the QR plate can be attached in
various places).

However I think the load limit in vertical arrangement is lower.

There is also a (ridiculously expensive) shutter release option for it that
allows thumb release when holding the grip.

Re: Oh another K-7 thread...

2009-05-22 Thread Peter Loveday

Every half stop is critical when you're mixing flash and daylight. I've
shot outdoor wedding ceremonies that were under a gazebo with a lit
background. I need the higher shutter speed both to open the stop a bit
and keep the shutter speed high enough for can't miss handholding. A
faster flash synch speed is something that should be available at this
price point. DOF is just one small part of the equation.

Paul

Is there any con in using shutter priority and hi-speed synch of your
choice?

I've used it with my K20D and pictures look fine.

HSS doesn't buy you any extra flash output, in fact it reduces it on many
models of flash. (the same energy must be spread over a range of exposures
to build up the frame, so you don't get full power in each slice).

Basically once you hit max flash output (or the max you want to use for
acceptable recycle times), the only way to increase the flash's contribution
is to reduce ambient, ie faster shutter speed (changing aperture affects
both flash and ambient).

As awesome as the K7 does look, this is the thing I really wanted to see
improved, and what disappoints me most about the specs. Especially as they
took the opporunity to improve the FPS and max shutter, so presumably a new
shutter mechanism, without addressing this basic issue.

Also, I don't see why they don't offer an electronic shutter on 1/180th
exposures, some of the Nikon DSLRs have done this (was it the D70?), and it
allows flash sync at any shutter speed - the mechanical shutter never goes
faster than 1/250th (or whatever) and the quicker exposure is done
electronically. There may be some technical reason not to offer ths, but
one would think if you can do live view (ie, readout during exposure),
surely electronic shutter isn't that different.

There's the RayFlash (http://www.ray-flash.com), which requires a certain

Neither of which are really designed for macro photography, but more for

Really you don't want the kind of power a normal flash puts out in a ring
flash; well, at least you need to be able to get it very low. The Metz
flashes are great at this, generally, and can be dialed down to 1/256th.
Still, its probably overkill.

There are DIY attempts at getting a ring-flash from the pop-up flash on

rather than an optical image ... but it's very bright and easy to see,
the resolution is 1.4Mpixel and the refresh is 60hz so it appears nearly
as sharp as a good computer monitor.

I assume thats in camera marketing-speak, making it fairly low res (in
computer terms) at 800x600 or somesuch in reality?

Or is it really a 1400x1050 res or somesuch?

Re: Australian photobook recommendation - Albumprinter

Finally picked
http://www.albumprinter.com.au/

Thanks for the review, perfect timing - I've been considering local options
for this recently. Blurb is just too damn expensive by the time you get it
here.

Keep us updated if you get different bindings/layouts on your thoughts there
too.

Thanks!

Re: FA 1.4/50mm tested by DPReview

2008-11-13 Thread Peter Loveday

In that case, FF and aps format would be the SAME DOF,
neither one would have deeper dof.
And print size is not a factor either.

For me print size is definitely a factor.

When considering if something is adequately in focus, or within acceptable
DOF, it is really the final result that interests me. Of course not only
print size, but viewing distance affects the overall 'enlargement' of the
image... Certainly the average 10x15 print may be viewed a lot closer than a
2m x 3m wall print, and this can change what CoC is acceptable, and what
falls within acceptable focus.

Still, in the majority of cases, where I'm considering a 10x15 vs an A4 vs a
web image, the viewing distance is similar, and acceptable CoC (and
therefore DOF) varies with enlargement size.

I think, for me, unless I'm contact printing from film (or sensor :), the
original format is less relevant than the overall enlargement of the
'system' - that is sensor, print, viewing distance considered as a whole.

Re: PUG themes

2008-11-12 Thread Peter Loveday

Aha, you backed off the Nudes theme after all!
Chicken!

it would be easy to incorporate nudes into any of those themes:

Roots - well, that's kind of like abstract, with hair.

For us Australians on the list, nudes for this one is a given, hair or not.

Yes, Dave, I know what it means. Just wanted to know what to expect
from Peter's photograph. Thanks though. :P

Oh, it could go any way.

The plural wording of the theme adds an extra challenge :)

Re: you know what?

2008-10-27 Thread Peter Loveday

It sucks that the Macbook doesn't have a SD card slot.
That's all.

In my experience, built in card readers are mind-numbingly slow. At least
the oens in my laptops are.

Even with the built in one, I use the little SanDisk MicroMate readers that
come with the Extreme III SDHC cards. They seem pretty speedy, and don't
take up too much room.

Re: Photowalking with a Digital Native

2008-10-27 Thread Peter Loveday

I have to force myself to do that every so often. I know I really
*should* take time and care when shooting -- when I do so I find that I
spend much less time in Lightroom and (especially) Photoshop.

I hope the M8 will help me with this. The most automation it has is
aperture

priority.

I'm not sure its the camera automation that causes this; at least not for
me.

I think the combination of being able to burn through shots with no real
cost (why take one good shot when you can take 10 mediocre ones in the same
time), and also the assumption that one can fix it easily in post if
needed are more to blame.
