Absolutely!
I really like how a medium format slide looks at light table. And I
still enjoy the magic of blackwhite home-processing. For everyday
shooting digital is quicker and has good enough quality.

I've never tried it on a crop, but did on film during my fling with
the EOS 3. Soft wide open, not a lot of contrast, gets better when
stopped down but never gets great, and that's the general consensus on
the lens from everyone I know who has used it other than you. The
Sigma is variable but a good copy is a lot better performer than the
Canon.

It's myths like this that I heard over and over again when I was
looking for a lens around this focal length for the 10D in 2003. So I
went to my dealer friend and borrowed the highly lauded EF 35/2, the
EF 28/1.8 and the Sigma 28mm. I set up a standard contrast/resolution
target and tested them all at all apertures, then shot several dozen
triplets of different subject with them to evaluate imaging
characteristics.

My results showed that the 35/2 was indeed the sharpest of the bunch
but had horrible out of focus imaging. The Sigma's out of focus
imaging was similarly awful and it had very poor sharpness until f/
5.6. The Canon 28/1.8 wasn't quite as sharp as the 35mm f/2 wide open,
but had good imaging and excellent sharpness even at f/2-2.8.

Since by that point I already didn't care a wit about 35mm format, I
bought the Canon 28mm lens and made many many very satisfying photos
with it. It became my most-used, standard lens on the 10D.

I don't know about the Canon, but I bought a Sigma EX DG 28 mm. 1.8
about two weeks ago. My copy is a very good performer, it focuses fast
and accurately, and from f/2.8 is slightly sharper than the FA 28 mm.
2.8 I also have (and the FA is a very good lens). At 1.8 (my cameras and
EXIF info say 1.7) and 2.0 is somewhat soft, but perfectly usable, and
it is already very good at 2.5
It has excellent bokeh, and it's a sturdy lens, although somewhat bulky
and heavy. It balances very well on the K10D though.

I have 4 rolls of 120 BW sitting in a box that needs to be developed.

I still have some chemicals, unopened, so maybe i;'ll do that over my
Xmas break.

I shot film after i bought my D1, as i was afraid of damaging the
camera, and it was the equine show camera, that was to make money
with.

That make any sense.??

Any way, once i picked up the second Nikon camera and the istD, i had
back ups for the horse shows, so i pretty much stopped film in 2005,
with just the odd 6x7 shoot.

Can't say i miss it at all.

rolls of 120, 9 cartridges of 110, 20 sheets of 2 1/4 x 3 1/4, 60
sheets of 4x5, and 75 sheets of 8x10.

Guess I'd better get out there.

But can I afford to have them processed when I do shoot them?

cease to be early next year.
I think it was four years ago that film had about five years to go. Once you

I do - matter of fact, just bought myself a working Mx, a second one to
restore, and will keep using film as long as I can. Film cameras are rather
cheap now, so it's possible to assemble a dirty gear spending less than $150,
so there's no worry about damaging or losing $$, and I'm going where I never
had the courage to carry my LX - and if my gear gets stolen, I very much doubt
the thief is going to develop my films... no pic taken with that gear is going
to appear anywhere.

There are lots of places to go where 35mm negative film is promptly available
and correctly developed. I intendo to go more digital soon, but as long as
there's film, I'm using it.

Film is more expensive to use than a DSLR
after a fairly short number of exposures. AND the
primary cost of using a SLR/DSLR system
is in cost of the multiple lenses, not the single body.

I have shot over 4000 frames with my DSLR
camera in two years, film and film developing alone, no
prints, would have cost much more than the $350
I paid for the DSLR, not to mention the value of all the time

I have no plans to shoot film otherwise, even though I bought a ZX-5n a few

Right about all that - in the first world anyway. If I buy a K20d here in BR
I'm going to expend something like $1500~1700... just the body with the kit
lens. My best Mx was $120 with a very clean 50mm 1.7. There is a lot of film in
the difference (negative 35mm by Fuji, $5 apiece, developed and scanned). Yes,
I will buy the K20d one of these days. To complement my gear.

My $120 loss if I damage the Mx is NOT stopping me to use it. The moment I lose
$1700 I'll be very angry indeed. I don't shoot that much, so that difference is
not hurting so much.

In the future (near, I hope) I'll do a lot of shooting with the digital. But as
long as I have the gear and the film so cheap, I'm using it. Actually, I think
I'll be using film as long as I can.

hi, you can get 6 MP Pentax DSLRs used but working fine for under $300
now on ebay from sellers
that will ship to any place on earth. Even a 6Mp is close to film
in quality, actually superior with respect to grain. Not quite
as sharp as 35mm film but the zero film and developing costs pays
for the camera in no time and there are many shooting advantages
to digital also, besides the lower operational costs over film.

Right about all that - in the first world anyway. If I buy a K20d here
in BR I'm going to expend something like $1500~1700... just the body
with the kit lens. My best Mx was $120 with a very clean 50mm 1.7. There
is a lot of film in the difference (negative 35mm by Fuji, $5 apiece,
developed and scanned). Yes, I will buy the K20d one of these days. To
complement my gear.

My $120 loss if I damage the Mx is NOT stopping me to use it. The moment
I lose $1700 I'll be very angry indeed. I don't shoot that much, so that
difference is not hurting so much.

In the future (near, I hope) I'll do a lot of shooting with the digital.
But as long as I have the gear and the film so cheap, I'm using it.
Actually, I think I'll be using film as long as I can.

2008-12-20 Thread Adam Maas
Two reasons, the first being look (fast BW has a unique look and film
produces a colour rendition that can be hard to achieve with digital,
particularly in the reds) the second being I simply enjoy working with
the simple, well built cameras better. There's little reasonable
options in digital that can match the feel of a high-end manual focus
35mm body or the simplicity of a mechanical 35mm SLR. I get both with
my F2a and FM2n.

While that is true for Pentax kit, it's not in some other systems. How
much film could you shoot for the $4500 price difference between a F5
and a D3? High-end 35mm film SLR's are, with very few exceptions,
cheaper than even a cheap DSLR. $350 easily gets me into an F5.

RE: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?

2008-12-20 Thread Luiz Felipe
... 100% right. The Brasilian issue starts with the shipping - let's assume
another $100 ($400). Now add Import taxes of 60% over combined price ($640).
That's a huge step from the K20d indeed, and the difference to my Mx falls to
$500, or just 100 rolls of film. Last year I shot 14 - now I'm using a digital
PS to cover my family reunions.

I'm going digital asap. But even then I'm willing to risk up to $200 wandering
aroung with 35mm films. I just don't want to bother with loss of gear
anymore. I'm pretty tired of whacking thieves with my walking stick, and
getting older to outrun them either... ;-)

Atually buying used gear involves another issue - if I'm lucky enough to buy a
damaged camera, I'm paying SH and import taxes over it anyway. I'm trying to
get hold of a new K2000, at least. I do think I'm within grasping range in
2009. It will be fundamental to my photography comeback, the same as the oldies.

I shoot film probably 60% - 70% of the time. About 30 rolls of 35mm
and 10 - 15 rolls of 120/220 per year. I like the look of Velvia and
I figure if I want black and white images then I may as well shoot
black and white film. I like the handling of my Pentax film cameras
better than my *ist D. Also, I have a better selection of Pentax
lenses for 35mm than I do for digital (especially at the wide end),
and I am reluctant to spend a lot of money on DA lenses because I'm
not sure about the long term viability of the APS size sensor format.

Finally, I persist with film because I still have some old Miranda
cameras and lots of Miranda lenses from the '60s and '70s. Optically
they are gorgeous. Unfortunately the camera bodies are wearing out so
I am using them less and less.

In the last year I've shot about a dozen rolls of BW 620, (assorted types but

rolls of TMAX 400, (not my faviorite film but at about a buck a roll too good a
deal to pass up), 135-36 to shoot in my MX and LX just for the joy of using
such beautifully made equipment, though I haven't used it yet. Hum, yonder

RE: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?

2008-12-20 Thread Bob W
I shot some Tri-X about 3 weeks ago. It was the first time I'd shot film
since I bought my Olympus E-500 about 2.5 years ago. I have a note in my
diary to finish the Tri-X I still have; I shall do that in the New Year,
although I'm thinking of taking it up north when I head up there for
Christmas, and leave the digital cameras down here.

2008-12-20 Thread Christine Aguila
After reading this thread, I decided to put a roll of Tri-X in my Canon T90.
I just shot a teapot filled with hot tea and some knic-knacks on my kitchen
window ledge: I wanted to check the histogram, but it wasn't there; I
pressed the shutter halfway the lens didn't focus, but I did get the
exposure readings; and I think later tonight I'll take some portraits of my
husband.

Prior to this, I haven't shot film for a long time.

2008-12-20 Thread Brian Walters
Pretty much, never.

I occasionally put a roll through a new m42 camera I've added to my
collection but even that seems to be a chore. I recently fired off a
short roll in a Voigtlander VSL1 - took about 3 months to finish the
roll

I'd like to put some film though my Super A, I really would. But
digital is just too seductive.

Cheers

RE: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?

2008-12-20 Thread John Coyle
Finished off two rolls last week, one colour and one of TX-100.
Used the colour in a Russian copy of an early Leica , amazed to find again
how good the Industar lens is for the price. Flares like crazy in
cross-lighting, but good resolution and colour balance.
Shot the TX-100 in a Spotmatic: the battery was playing up however, and I
didn't have time to get a new one, so I went back to estimating the exposure
from the Sunny 16 rule. It will be interesting to see how close I can
still get it!

I still have a couple of rolls in the fridge, as well as some VP-120 for my
Rolleicord - I'll have to shoot it soon, I really like using those old,
often manual cameras. With the Rollei I use a Sekonic light-meter, which is
still dead accurate although probably over 30 years old.

Re: Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?

2008-12-20 Thread Bong Manayon
I am still shooting film for creative, personal and non-commercial
projects. I still have a lot of film cameras (manual focus mechanical
types like the MX with one odd MZ3) to keep active and keep my
imagination and skills tested. I just shot off my last roll of Ilford
Delta and processed it (D76) and wondering if I should replenish
anything along that line since I can convert to BW anytime from
digital shots and even color film photos
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/bongmanayon/3094352907/).

I would continue to use slide film for my sunsets as long as someone
processes them here in the Philippines (as of now, only one lab
handles E-6). I could never *consistently* catch the ball of the
setting sun without reducing it to a messy hotspot with a DSLR, so I
always have a slide film along (see
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bongmanayon/2964383536/).

Africa and have been lurking since +- 2000. Since on the list the enablement
bug bit and have added *istD, K10D, MZS and a number of lenses since I

Its almost 2009 - Who's still shooting 35mm film?

I have only shot one roll since going with a DSLR
a couple years ago. I am wondering, anyone on this
list still using 35mm film at all, or still using
35mm film full time?

2008-12-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I bought a Pentax 645 almost a year and a half ago after enjoying
three rolls of film I put through the one that was graciously loaned
to me a year before that. I still haven't scanned all the frames I
took then. I haven't loaded a roll of film into the one I bought.

Anyone want to buy a nice Pentax 645? I have body, two film magazines,
45 and 75 lenses, electrical remote cable, case, and perhaps a couple
other little things.

I haven't shot 35mm film since 2002. I have a ton of it in the freezer
for when hell freezes over and I take out my beloved old Rollei 35S.
