invalid helo cmd - bug or what?

2013-11-03 Thread Matthias Schmidt
Hello,
since updating to Powermail 6.2 emails can't be sent anymore.
The error is invalid helo command.
What I see at the server side is something like this:
Helo command rejected: invalid ip address; from=n...@doamin.tls
to=n...@doamin.tls proto=ESMTP helo=[::1]
and of course the server is right, this helo cmd is invalid ;-)
So what's going on?

Jean Michel,
the bug appears with Postfix, the version shipped with 10.6 server, TLS/SSL.
I didn't tested it, because I use meanwhile Apple Mail because of missing
support for PGP.
Also all of my accounts are meanwhile running via IMAP.

the problem is that MacOS is UTF and the text-engine of PM is not.

Changing that would probably require a nearly complete rewrite of PM in Cocoa
as the code basis of PM is probably still mostly Carbon. PM was originally
written in CodeWarrior and CW was bought out of the market quite some time ago.
A complete rewrite is a huge amount of work and the risk the market won't
compensate for the effort is quite high, although PM might get a new big fan
community this way, who knows

Go to the System Preferences (Systemeinstellungen) Sprache Text
 Eingabequellen Kroatisch
With the Option Eingabequellen in der Menüleiste anzeigen.

Whenever you have to write in Croatian language go there and choose
 Kroatisch.

this won't work with PM as long as OSX standard-fonts are used, because they
are all UTF.
The old CE-Fonts are not available anymore on MacOS X.

If your fonts for Mac OS X are no more complete, informe you on this page to
 download the right one:
 http://www.aatseel.org/resources/fonts/macintosh_central.htm

they suggest to use OS 7 fonts. These fonts can cause trouble with other
applications under OS X.

Re: Future

Koen,

PM is a pure text based MUA for the MacOS.
There's a new a new beta version available, which fixes some Lion bugs and will
be compatible with 10.8.
The version can be found here:
http://powermail.simplenet.com/pm6.1.1b2.dmg
Grouping E-Mail is available since quite some time in PM and PM has the best
search engine of all mail clients I know of.
GMail also works with PM as well as html rendering, you just can't compose
mails with html, it'll be always text.

If you need html composing and more funky stuff you might want to use another
MUA.
The same is valid if you need to have simultaneous access to several mail
accounts with IMAP.
If you need POP only PM is imho still the best MUA for the Mac :-)

I still hope CTMDEV will change the IMAP implementation in the near future.
That's actually my no1 feature request ... Jerome are you listening ^_^

The e-mail applications I get these information from are : Sparrow, Postbox.
 These are quite new applications.
And if you would implement some of their functions it would be a great update

When you try top find alternative e-mail applications for the mac, PowerMail

I don't think that is what he is after, as that would shrink the size of

Yes, that is how this feature is implemented (but it searches for

Why did you choose to use the Subject instead of the In-Reply-To,

I don't know, what software is running on your server.
In case it is cyrus for POP and IMAP (the message sounds like that)
rebuild your mailboxes.
You can use mailbfr for that, if you are not really confident with the
command line for doing this.
In case it's something different like dovecot, you first need to read
the documentation how to do it.
Be aware, that all messages in the mailboxes on the server will return
to the state unread, so mails which are still stored on the server will
be pulled again by PM.

So I switched the Finder to Japanese (with Kana as input), and preferred

Likewise, pressing the space bar, with Japanese input

then set stay on screen to never

my settings are all set to let application decide and the
notifications do disappear.

PowerMail's default settings for Growl is to stick both notification
types (new mail and error). However, some Growl styles always fade
out, whatever the user settings or the application request.

may I suggest to change the default settings in a way, that
notifications for new mails just fade away and that errors do stay on
the screen.

I also get 2 notifications, one for each mail and a summary
notification. It might be that the second one comes from SpamSieve.

I just realized, that I get 2 notifications for each mail and
notifications for SpamSieve are switched off.
So how can I get rid of the second notification?

No print preview
PM does not display a preview of the printout in the Print dialog. Now
that it supports HTML mail, this would be useful. Most applications can
show a preview, with only some cross-platform applications failing to do
so. A preview is especially useful if you are printing out a message hat
includes several messages-worth of quoted messages. You can easily check
how many pages you need to print out.

Looks to me like a bug ... pm6 is still beta ;-)

Growl notices
The Growl notifications for new mail are useful, but I find it annoying
that they are persistent. They do not fade away as most such
notifications do. I think they should only be displayed persistently if
there is an error message. (I have audio notifications in PM for most
important mail, so the Growl notifications are only really useful for me
when I have the sound muted.)

That's growl settings, which you can adjust in the system preferences.
I also see some issues with growl - it sometimes just hangs, but the
notifications do fade out.

Do you still have the growl script installed for pm5?
If so, try removing that one and see, if it solves the problem

Some little issues with 6.0b1

2008-11-25 Thread Matthias Schmidt
Hello,

after using the last built for a couple of days I observed this:

- while PM is receiving mails, it seams the app is blocked - I get the
SAT1-cursor and can't do anything.
- Growl quite often hangs ..., but this is probably a growl problem and
has nothing to do with pm

I like the new list design and Quick Look is great :-)

Is there a possibility to connect simultaneously to several imap accounts?

I can't run pm5 in the same time as v6.

I miss a settings for sorting according threads.
I receive most mails from different lists and sorting by thread is for
me the most missing feature in pm5 and styled text the last thing I

Will there be a separate beta list for testing and other stuff, like

Previous Betas have been good enough for real use, I'm hoping this is
the same as that's what I'm doing.

So far...

1. Missing Drag select of messages. Like Select All keyboard option, but
miss the Drag Selection.

2. I like the new look.

3. I like that everything seems to work at least as well as v5.

4. Like the Updated at option.

5. I don't understand why you can't show the simple header with HTML
email. I get a LOT more html email than I have in the past, and it's
very irritating to have to select simpler header, and lost HTML
formatting just to see how it was addressed.

6. Runs well on my 8 Core Machine.

7. No email to tech support option? Or does that turn on only with my
serial number.

8. Thanks to Ben for the tip on quicklook support for attachments. cool.

9. Feature list for me doesn't feel like a v6, more like 5.6 - but will
hold judgement until I've gotten more experience with what's here, and
what will come before release.

10. No crashes yet, hopefully more stable for me than v5

11. Didn't test it with Safari preview of v4, with Powermail v5 that
made it much more unstable on my machine.

Happy to get the update, thanks!

I currently have to compact the database twice a week to avoid this limit.

Not sure how long I can continue using PowerMail...

You might be missing this feature.

No I didn't miss that one, but we could do that before.
What they added is just a Macro for doing so automatically.

Instead of multiplying risks with bigger and bigger databases, PowerMail
works around the 2GB database limit by enabling the archiving and
splitting into several smaller indexable message corpuses.

I don't see the point. Where is the risk?
Any bigger SQL database is handling gigabytes of data since years.

There is a problem, but no risk.
The problem is called time machine.

http://lists.apple.com/archives/carbon-dev/2008/Aug/msg00148.html

from an Apple engineer: I have occasionally seen failure-to-hide when
the application took an unusually long time to launch -- it bounced in
the Dock, and stopped because the Dock (or some other part of the
system) gave up on expecting the app to finish launching.

When it happened, quitting and relaunching the app always fixed it for me.

If you're seeing the same thing I am, I doubt there's anything your app
can do about it (unless the reason for very-long launch time is under
the app's control).

I've read that discussion, but in the case of PM I think there's another
reason behind it.
Imho the Menu API in connection with apps using the carbon api has some
bugs, so I don't think it's only PM's fault.
I don't expect this to be fixed, because Apple won't put anymore
ressources into carbon. Everything goes to develop the cocoa framework

However, she used to work at a school, and emails sent from there had
From: Xstone, Elaine [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2) For emails that do not have a name in the From field, guess the name

don't need to search on Bruce1954yahoo or whatever he was using that year!

this would be pretty uncommon.
In this case the subject is filled with No subject and this is imho
the correct behaviour.

Maybe an incoming mailfilter could do the rewrite according everyones wishes.

3) Don't be so eager to check email. When I wake up my laptop, wait a
few seconds before checking and let the wireless connection come up.

yes, this might also cure one kind of crash I rarely observe.

4) Give me one error message when you can't get email (because, eg,
wireless is down). Don't give me one modal dialog for each account! Even
better, use Growl.

you can switch the dialog off in the preferences.
Growl sounds like a good idea.

5) Stop random crashes.

I don't see any random crashes.
Crashes I observe are either connected to the IP stack, which stops
responding after the MacBook was asleep or to text encodings in
connection with a strange html mail.

of course I can view html messages usually.

passwords are re-entered, life can go on.

+ If you store your passwords in the keychain, make sure it is unlocked
while using PowerMail on Leopard - Apple has changed its security
policies and you may now be prompted for a keychain password at every
fetch if the keychain is locked (one alternative is to store passwords
in PowerMail's settings and not use the keychain for these).

+ On systems with Safari 3 installed, selecting text in an HTML message
for copying requires double-clicking on the first word to be selected,
then shift-clicking on the last word.

what I now do, is just selecting the whole text in a html message and
click repyl.
That works fine for me.

LetterRip and UTF

2008-02-06 Thread Matthias Schmidt
Hello,

when mails are send from Outlook in UTF to a mailinglist, which is run
by LetterRip, the mail is encoded in base64.
But LetterRip does append his footer lines in a different encoding.

In this case PM decodes the base64 encoded mail correct, but not the footer.
AppleMail doesn't have this hickup.
This is a known bug in LetterRip, but I guess that will never be fixed
anymore.
Because LetterRip is still widely used in the Mac community, it'll be
nice to have a workaround for this in PM.

you need to copy your own scripts again to the folder before starting PM, so.

No Internet Connection?

2008-01-09 Thread Matthias Schmidt
Hello,

since the last update of PowerMail I have some issues with automatic
connections.
PM would just not connect to the server, but claims there's no internet
connection.
Of course there is, the server is on the local network, a volume is
mounted, I can access the server from any other software the ip
connection is just fine.
Then I checked, if PM is trying to connect at all and I get nothing in
my network sniffer.
It looks like PM is even not trying to open a connection.
This happens after PM is running for quite some time.
Quitting and restarting PM cures the problem.
So my assumption would be, that there is a memory leak.

From: Urs Gruetzner [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Two Mail accounts have been deactivated, the service and the server do
not exist anymore.

I want to keep the accounts (for the old mails in it), but of course
have deactivated the connection to the non existing server

PM (5.2.2, OSX4.11) however still wants to connect both accounts and of
course comes always with an error message.

At home, same setup, but there its works, i.e PM has stopped the
conection to these accounts.

Thanks for advise

Urs

Under what circumstances is PM trying to connect? A scheduled connection?

Under the Connection menu in PM, select Connection... and make sure
your deactivated accounts are not checked.

well, there is something going wrong then.
For me at least it works.
I have a couple of IMAP accounts and they are all not activated and PM
never connects to them, as long as I don't choose it directly.
