Hello All,

I was into the QL and Z88 in the 80's and 90's. Semi-retired now and
just getting back into all things QL related.

I have a few thousand messages to read on this list to catch up...

I have fond memories of meeting many of you at QL get togethers like QL
Boston in 96 and the one in Portland...

Welcome back Don. I remember reading articles by you in IQLR years ago.

I'd seriously suggest joining QL Forum (qlforum.co.uk) too, if you
have not already done so. And if you're on Facebook, try the Sinclair
QL For Everyone group. Loads of QL users on both sites.

Best wishes.

Hey Don!

Welcome back and great to hear from you again.

The list has been pretty quiet lately.

And yes, many fond memories of QL show road trips to Rhode Island,
Tennessee, Boston and PA.

Not quite retired here yet, got a few more years to go but I still play

Hi Paul,

The original French made SAF 40LF220 3.0V battery is no longer made.
There is an equivalent at ?23 at
https://www.allbatteries.co.uk/lithium-battery-3v-270mah-40lf220-equivalent-mgl0025.html
or you could ask
https://www.vlad.fr/en/various-professional/7883-battery-lithium-3v-270mah-industry-type-2840lf22029.html
https://www.laboiteapiles.com/produit/124/40lf220 claim to have some in
stock

However I think what you are after is a CR2032 replacement in a holder.
Marcel mentioned a holder at
https://www.kilgus.net/2018/05/22/ql-sd-ql-microsd-and-sgc-battery/
Dave on the QL Forum had https://qlforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1137 but I
think you are remembering

The Russian ones when back online were

Gentlemen

I should have written earlier but there you are! My impression is that
the track itself is in good order and that the same is true of the coach
bodies and seats. The tools for maintaining and erecting the track were
present. To my mind the only question marks are against the coach bogies
which must surely be due an overhaul (particularly if the coaches were to
be included in any sale) and the braking capacity of the train
(especially if hauled by a steam loco with no brakes of its own -
electric locos stop quite quickly when the power is cut).

Anyway thanks to you all for the work involved. If anyone is interested
on Tuesday we could try out Pop on the track.

Christopher

You do seem to enjoy sending rail-related messages to a Sinclair QL related

My worry is that when you don't get the anticipated responses, you'll feel

Bruce Nicholls has kindly given permission for all seven issues of
QReview magazine to be made available via my website.

The magazine ran from July 1993 to March 1995 as a quarterly paper
magazine, which focused mainly on reviews, as its title implies.

Richard Alexander kindly scanned the seven paper issues and they are
available to download as PDF files from the magazines page on my
website.

Please note the fairly large file sizes of the PDF files before
downloading.

Download from:

http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/mags/index.html#QREVIEW

I like killing time before my brain finally decides it 'Sleeppy time'
by relaxing doing 16x16 Sudoku puzzles. I found software that lets me
create puzzles at home OFF-line. That way I can print them out on
demand. Even in the middle of a restless night.

In building a pdf of 350 puzzles, which should last me some time, I
learned that creating PDF's, the final file size CAN be dependent on
the softy used.

My Initial efforts with 4 color puzzle images (black, white, 2 shades
of gray) in its folder that is approx 6.25megs of source material,
created different sizes of PDF's depending on the PDF creation software

used.
I had to experiment a bit to end up with a sharable PDF file.
One PDF creator software made a PDF over 50megs, (6 megs grew to 50
WOW) another in the high 30megs, other PDF creation software ran from
20plus megs to 45plus megs for the end result PDF.

I did try and do all this with each software's settings equal where ever
I could find those settings.

Further experimenting finally found a way to create the SAME file FROM
the SAME sources in a PDF of 11megs.
(yet anutter software to use, just need to remember to use it the next
time rather then the other stuff also installed on my PC.)

For me the learning and messing with getting to this goal was worth it.

For Years I've used Foxit as my primary PDF reader, and it has NO
trouble with my 11meg PDF of 16x16 puzzles. I suspect Adobe also will
handle the 11meg file, as easily as the 50meg file (But I tossed that so
who cares, I'm going with the 11megger)

 :-)

When scanning material, there are several factors that directly effect
file sizes. The resolution scanned at (DPI), the color depth, and the
saved image file format. A user probably has no control over that if
they scan direct to PDF, If that is the case one is usually at the mercy
of that software.
If the Scanner wishes to clean up the scans then they have to initially
save them in a lossless format, that way the cleaning process can be
done before saving in a compressed format which usually results in
smaller file sizes.

Might have been when I was an editor and submissions to the

to figger out the read/write tricks of PC floppies.
Once that was fully understood, I then applied that learning and
was able to do basic read/write of PC disks with my TS2068 as well.

Was or is there a PC equivalent? I also recall thinking about this

Hi,

Is it possible to have a user area in BP or QLE so user specific

I use a Linux system, which I have my home directory on a separate

So I can change Linux OS without altering the user data.

Could these QL distros use this type of system setup.

Only Suggestion I can offer as an aid to situations like this.

Create a directory where you keep copies of the programs you install.
Think of it as a single repository of 'What I need to put back if I
have to'. I do this with windows PC also. Does help when it eventually
needs re-installed having them all in one place saves seeking 'where
did I put that'. Also simplifys backups

Work on QL-SD is still moving along, the driver has reached version

There is also a new version of the loadable DEV device (or actually

I've also soldered a bit of hardware in my free time in the evenings:

HUmmm, when Mechanical Affinity sold stuff internationally we always
marked the parcels as having "repaired" items. Only once I recall did
the customer have a problem, mainly someone in their postal system
took part of the contents, BUT that customer double ordered to hopefully
bypass that problem in order to get what he wanted.

Lucerne, Apr 29th 2015 ? Urs K?nig of COWO Enterprises LLC proudly releases
QL IS 30 2014 - THE DISTRIBUTION for public download. This distribution is
the successor to the QL Today 2013 The Final DVD which was sent out to
subscribers in September 2013 with The Final Issue of the QL Today magazine.
The new version holds everything which was on the DVD, but has been
carefully updated and supplemented with new material - Urs has been able to
add some real long lost gems and an exclusive new release of a formerly
commercial package, QDT the ultimate QL desktop - created or preserved
during the last few months. Altogether there are 4.7 GB of QL related
documents, software and pictures on this distribution. Preconfigured QL
emulators for use under Windows, Mac OS and even Linux make it easy to bring
the QL (back) to your desk. Great ways to (re-)start programming for the QL
or using QL programs. QL IS 30 2014 - THE DISTRIBUTION is free which means
it can be downloaded, used and given to friends by anyone at no cost. QL

Ok Flash, MANY of the updates are NOT for the benefit of the end user
But for the DRM functions for the Content providers. AS Flash progressed

Version flashplayer10_2r152_32_win is the last version of flash before
it got DRM bloated, which only continues to grow, mostly for DRM purposes.

I do believe that given the chance firefox can use the VLC media player,
thats Not so DRM bloated I think. I do happen to use VLC instead of

 Geoff,

I have been following your ramblings about the QL-is-30 Workshop
with more than a little interest (but not much!!)

Your comments regarding the help and interest for this event coming
only from overseas, leads me to see that you have experienced the same
apathetic response that the current QUANTA committee members have, for
many years, experienced from the South-UK QLers (and especially QUANTA
UK Members). Although the percentage attendance of the UK QUANTA
members at QUANTA events during the last decade has been unacceptably
low, it is far greater than the attendance of the OS QUANTA Members
(which one can count on one had with half the digits removed!). It
will be interesting to see what the attendance is like in Edinburgh
 from both UK and OS.

So far of the names I have 9 are overseas and 8 UK. (I believe there are
two more overseas but I do not have their names.) All told 6 countries
should be represented.

Those of you who have spent some time as a QL Trader have the
benefit of a wider address book of QLers than QUANTA has (their
address book is limited to UK and OS members past and present), which
gives you the edge when it comes to filling the void left by the
 apathetic UK QLers.

All the OS QUANTA members, have been invited (like the UK ones) to
every event that QUANTA has put on, be it a Workshop (one or two days
in length), Show or any other name that you would like to call it
(QUANTA has consistently called it a workshop on the grounds that it
is the attendees who make it into whatever type of event they want,
when (and if) they get there.)

In practice I don't think Quanta shows have been workshops for about 10
years, with the exception of QLis21 and possibly 2011 when we had
Quanta issues (constitution and subscription).
You have also identified that when QUANTA were able to attract UK
people with any QL savvy to a QUANTA event, then we used them to give
a talk or demonstration (and under the direction of a previous QUANTA
Chairman, contributed financially to their out-of-pocket expenses - a
move which has been greatly criticised as QUANTA Workshops/Annual
General Meetings cost too much to put on). But then, QUANTA has got
both money that it is not afraid to spend (since no one else seems
interested in using it) and some equipment which you are welcome to
use if you need it (Projector Screen for presentations).

Very good policy and much appreciated. I was going to make use of it
when I did the activities for Solihull in 2007, but I think my speakers
all said it was not necessary.

As far as I know we don't need to use any of Quanta's equipment,
although I was prepared to request the projector. The church are being
generous in letting us use their facilities.

One thing I would appreciate from Quanta is if someone would be prepared
to say a few words about electronic participation in meetings. I am not
thinking in terms of the technical details, but more how it has turned
out in practice.
It is also fair to say that the current QUANTA Committee have been in
service for many years unlike some other EX-QUANTA committee members
who, when times got tough, backed away from their volunteered
responsibilities, or resigned from QUANTA altogether!

And finally, you seem to have accepted that one needs local people on
the ground to investigate the availability of suitable venues for an
event such as QL-is-30 and expecting people to travel hundreds of
miles to do this is a complete waste of time, effort and money.

So we wish George Gwilt, John Sadler and all the QUANTA SQLUG Subgroup
all the best in their efforts to host the QL-is-30 event in 2014. See
 you all there. :-)
Indeed George and John have not yet been given all the credit they have
deserved,

Best wishes,

Geoff

Secreted away in my trove of Sinclair materials is a box of goodies left

SyncWare News was a technical and software featuring USA publication of

retired.

Software (on a varity of media), articles, reviews, contest submissions,
and various bits and pieces of what was once interesting stuff, all
ZX81, TS1000, TS2068, and QL related.

Would anyone be interested enough for it to be worthwhile cattylogging
some of it and listing it for sale here?

I believe that most of the box's contents are the original submissions
for publication, so what would end up available would be the original

An important note: Both the Thor 20/21 and Gerhard's 68020 powered

run on the 68020. SGC also patched QDOS at startup.

Hi all,

I have also been working on restoring a Thor XVI. This unit had a
leaked batery which corroded the circuit board and some of the
components. I have got it to where it boots and I can see there's
text, but the video image is so distorted I cannot read what it says.
This Thor has the 2MB RAM, two floppies and a Rodime HD of unknown
size. If it ends up being unrepairable, I would be happy to part it
out to get other Thors up and running.

I am also very interested in finding the following:

* A schematic for the Thor version that piggy-backed an 020 onto a
BBQL (specifically the 020 mod) * JEDEC files/equations for any
custom logic in any interface cards * a way to re-implement QL video
in 32-bit wide RAM, and with an improved output format. I would very
much like to produce a QL Video Card that makes the on-board video
unnecessary, and then disable the onboard video (shame that IC does
so much else) *broken Gold Cards/Super Gold Cards for spares/repair

Dave

Dave, I got to sort of wonder if that is a video format problem, USA
video format vs Uk or European???

Used to sell some rubber 'feet' that actually was a little taller then

(look for door stops that stick to the wall at doorknob height)

Also provided a much larger contact surface so the machine didnt want to

[Ql-Users] help shake cobwebby loose in Yee Old Brain

2013-01-28 Thread paul

Many a moon ago Mr. Koenig started asking me for the pertinent poo
about the PM version QL I still have. I finally got it out and took
a screwdriver to it to get the info he chases. Somewhere deep in
the hind brain still lurks the impression that Frank Davis and I
once fired it up had it working.
But (Murphy's Law) after a bit of reflecting on what I saw inside
this old QL has me questioning that memory. I Do recall reading
that most PM version QL's had the 'dongle' to get the ROM code
past the 32K memory range.

This particular machine was not made for the USA market, so it
has the UK connectors on the backside.

The EPROMs in this unit are blue sticky labeled (ballpoint pen)
QL PM and QL PM 4000, both are D27128-3's so they are 16K chips.
So Am I missing some code still?? It's been at least 20+ years since
it has seen daylight or had power applied to it, so, Yups, the
original membrane has died. :-)
Other then that as far as I know its all original. It does have the ROM
port cover attached. (probably not a validation of anything)

IF I am missing code, was it another 16K chip?
Anyone have the code that I might not have?
I do have spare rom cards for the back port.
I think they are of the 16K variety. (subject to verification).
That's also if this might ever be operational again.

And the esoteric side note minutia datum, the 8749 has a paper label
stuck on it that is hand written; IPEX 0.7

Yes, the two USB ports are poly-fused to 100mA each. Some keyboards

The only issue I had with Firefox is it never seems to apply
stylesheets, and when I went on various forums to see if there was a
simple answer or a common mistake people made in stylesheets, which made
Firefox ignore them without telling you why (even in the error console),
I was horrified to find that the world and their partners seem to have
issues with stylesheets versus Firefox, and the stylesheets usually fail.

My stylesheet went through W3C validation OK, so I thought I was going
to have a hard time finding out what was going wrong.

Turns out there's actually a simple answer buried deep in Firefox
default settings, which are set by default not to allow pages to specify
their own colours and fonts. A couple of ticks in the boxes and all was
well.

Suddenly colours and fonts are the same in both browsers. An answer I
never once saw in all the forums I read, which also probably explains
why there were so many it works fine on my computer replies.

Anyway, I can see why you are having a wee rant at Sourceforge,
it is abysmal in IE under Windows 7.

Yup, tried it with Firefox, where it's much easier. One of these
days I'll see sense and make Firefox the default browser on this
 system.

This is a wise statement in the most part, tis even better to plan on
doing that Soon!!

A lot less security holes in IE then is years past, BUT they still find
holes big enough to drive trucks thru it. Setting up firefox was/is
fairly easy, it also will Import all your IE bookymarks for you.

The ONLY reason I use IE (The last 8 or more years) is to visit the MS
updates site. PERIOD!

2 rolls of fax paper per box, But a single cut with a hand held hacksaw
and ta-da 2 rolls of 2040 thermal printer paper per roll of this stuff.

Basicly I'll send them for the postage costs should anyone want them.
I have 4 boxes of 2 rolls which would equate to 4 rolls of 2040 printer
paper once the hacksaw technique is applied
(unless you want them for the full size then that only 2 rolls of
thermal fax paper)

Let me know if interested.

back then this was actually the cheaper way to go to get 2040 paper.

Secreted away in my trove of Sinclair materials is a box of goodies left

SyncWare News was a technical and software featuring USA publication of

retired.

Software, articles, reviews, contest submissions, and various bits and
pieces of what was once interesting stuff, all ZX81, TS1000, TS2068, and
QL related.

Would anyone be interested enough for it to be worthwhile cattylogging
some of it and listing it for sale here?

I believe that most of the box's contents are the original submissions
for publication, so what would end up available would be the original
media, Docs, proposed article writeup and what ever else is located and
attached with the material.

I will be digging out QL material for sure, probably original boxed

They want to know if this could be used as a replacement for a mouse

The trackball is designed to work plugged into the QL joystick port and
so is wired up as an Atari joystick.

As the Pointer Environment can work with the cursor keys I guess a
Joystick and/or the Trackball would work too - or am I missing something ?

Thats my understanding also, since the trackball is the same thing

I have JS ROMs for sale on sellmyretro.com - an American QL will work
in the UK, but that is mainly because there is a small toggle switch
next to the UHF modulator, which you can flick over - not fitted on
all boards.

JS ROMs will work on an American QL, with output via the RGB socket -
the display on an American TV will be squashed because of the PAL/NTSC
issue :-(

Somewhere, I know, you've seen that before, I do believe that I have
some US JS ROMs tucked away here in the USA if anyone wants via a more

Anyone know if QPC2 / QemuLator / QL2K will run on a 64 bit version of
Windows 7?

Dilwyn Jones

--

My understanding is thus, Windows x64 has a 32bit engine in it, so that
it can run most 32bit software inside that process.

IF one has a x64 system most installer programs (current ones) will have
some form of trigger so that windows can install 64bit applications in
the regular 'program files' folder and the 32bit programs in the
'program files (x86)' folder.

Generally its a real no-no removing the ability of windows x64 to run
32bit softy at this time (so far).

What is lost is running 8bit softy and I believe 16bit softy.
UNLESS it is possible to run an older version of winderze in a VM
environment

Does anyone know a source of good ribbons for my Fujitsu DL1150 dot

anyone re-manufacturing them, perhaps. This takes A4 landscape which
is useful for spreadsheets, printing a long strip although I have
difficulty getting Windows to understand this.

I remember those days, used to have a sheep printer that had a very
short ribbon tucked into the cartridge, drip the ink on it, with a
plastic bag on fingers to 'wipe' the ribbon as I used an electric
screwdriver with a phillops bit and sat there grinding away to even out
the new ink saturation.

I need to ask a question which is slightly off-topic here.

Does anyone use BBC iPlayer on the same PC as the BBC iPlayer?

I just can't get it to download or install on this while QPC is running, or
even in the same session after I shut down QPC. Anyone know why? (the PC is
Windows XP Pro with SP3, 1.4GHz processor, 1GB RAM))

We also tried it on the notebook with Windows 7 Starter. It's just gone into a
please wait loop for the last half hour, I don't know how long iPlayer download
should take? QPC had been in use on that too.

And further, does anyone have experience of it on a slow broadband - in theory we pay for up
to 8mbs from Orange. It's never better than 2mbs (in fact BT say that's the best we can hope
for here, irrespective of what Orange say). Last time I had iPlayer working, it was very jerky,
pausing every few seconds, totally unusable, so I removed it. Anyone with experience of it on 2mb/s
able to say if it should work at that speed? The BBC website has a hell of a lot of how good
and essential this is but no useful help whatsoever.

This is driving me up the wall at the moment because I've got a visitor and we
are trying together to see if we can get it to work. Although it's a bit off
topic, I know I'll get a quicker and more sensible answer here.

Dilwyn Jones

I have a customer who purchased a second hand QL off ebay and a Trump

The QL was in a poor state and would not start - but he fetched all the
chips out and reseated them, so it starts fine.

However, as soon as he plugged the Trump Card into the machine - it gets
through the chequer-board memory test - then comes up with a grey screen.

The PSU seemed under powered, so he has replaced the PSU and the Trump
Card + QL then started fine a couple of times.
However, having left the computer and Trump Card for a few days - he is
back to the same problem on start-up

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this may be - I wonder if it
could be the 68008 chip??

back in the days of yore, we used to 'cure' QL's with marginal power problems by
replacing the 2 ROM's with a CMOS EPROM, really dropped the milliamp draw of the
QL's power supply bits. Somewhere in the back of my mind it seems that it
reduced the total draw by up to 30%

I notice that Micro$oft have released something called Small Basic
(it's been around a while actually) which is a cousin to their QBasic
and the like, designed to go with the .net framework etc. But above all,
what got my attention was that it was designed to put the fun back into
programming.

It's been designed to be a simple to use second generation BASIC and
seems to be aimed at youngsters and people who just want to write quick
applications for their own use rather than being a development system
for commercial/free aps as such. There's info about it here and a
getting started guide which gives an idea of what it's about.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/cc950524.aspx

Is this some kind of admission that people are wanting to go back to
simpler, easier to learn programming systems like our S*Basic for example?

I sort of Don't think so, More I think it is a move to promote the .Net
program usage. MS lost the fight to control Java and has come up with
the .Net programming language to fill out their plan to be all, do all
within their auspices. MS has a multi-pronged marketing program in
place to foster the growth and usage of the .Net (crap), hoping to
supplant and replace java.

It is them just continuing the world domination plan they have been
following for a long time in the software world.

Help! (Put Windoze on pause for now, but it will stop anything else printing
until I can clear it)

Ok, you're on the right track, as I understand the beast: this is
primarily what seems to be happening

1 You initate a print job
2 MOST all the printer control stuff is now handed off to winderze
3 makes for a cheaper printer, less work on the printer makers tech
   types
4 Widerze has to buffer the print job so that it can be passed to the
   printer at a workable speed,
5 SO it (the print job) gets placed in a temp file of some sort, maybe
even 2 diff places, the print spooler temp file and the SWAP file ??
6 anyway, once placed in a temp file situation, the DATA is still there
until the print spooler part of winderze is happy it did what it was
supposed to so: spit out paper from the printer.

the process suggested on that link is guiding folks to where the temp
files are hiding, just awaiting the all clear from the printspooler in
winderze

Now having taxed the brain too much I must take it out and retire off to
the spa (providing I can afford it in todays economy) and get off the
soapbox

This is a serious matter. Over the years the term punter has been

Can anyone suggest a better word than punter, but no so formal as

OK, I give up. How do you get Windows XP to format a new second hard
 disk?

I uninstalled the old drive D:\, switched off, restarted, the New
Hardware Wizard found the new drive and it's now listed as drive D:\
 in Device Manager.

Now, how do I format it? It doesn't appear in My Computer etc. -
normally you can right click on a drive name and get the context menu
 to offer a format command.

It's almost as if it's not recognised because it's not formatted, but
of course that gives a catch 22 of not being able to format a new hard
 disk because
it's not already formatted, so I guess I'm missing some simple course
 of action here???

Also tried from DOS command line, FORMAT D: just gives drive not
 recognised error

F***ing Windoze! (That stood for Flaming, by the way, in case anyone
 thought otherwise!)

This new 250GB drive is to be the home for all my QL stuff, a full
backup of drive C:\ and my music (that way Windoze can do what it
 likes with the C:\ drive.)

didnt see anyone ask this, have you checked in the BIOS setup if the
computer is seeing the new HD and is reporting its correct size??

On some PC's you need to get into the BIOS First, let it determine that
there is a HD present, then save settings
THEN Fdisk and most any other utility way of messing with the drive
should work.

MOST newly bought retail packeages HD's should be recognizable by
winderze ONCE its allowed to see the drive I recall

Does anybody know, if the Xchange version for PC is free-, share or

Luckily, the excellent Psion Chess for PC is meanwhile freeware.

There was a Xchange for PC DOS world made, somewhere around here I have
