Bruce Nicholls has kindly given permission for all seven issues of QReview magazine to be made available via my website. The magazine ran from July 1993 to March 1995 as a quarterly paper magazine, which focused mainly on reviews, as its title implies. Richard Alexander kindly scanned the seven paper issues and they are available to download as PDF files from the magazines page on my website. Please note the fairly large file sizes of the PDF files before downloading. Download from: http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/mags/index.html#QREVIEW I like killing time before my brain finally decides it 'Sleeppy time' by relaxing doing 16x16 Sudoku puzzles. I found software that lets me create puzzles at home OFF-line. That way I can print them out on demand. Even in the middle of a restless night. In building a pdf of 350 puzzles, which should last me some time, I learned that creating PDF's, the final file size CAN be dependent on the softy used. My Initial efforts with 4 color puzzle images (black, white, 2 shades of gray) in its folder that is approx 6.25megs of source material, created different sizes of PDF's depending on the PDF creation software used. I had to experiment a bit to end up with a sharable PDF file. One PDF creator software made a PDF over 50megs, (6 megs grew to 50 WOW) another in the high 30megs, other PDF creation software ran from 20plus megs to 45plus megs for the end result PDF. I did try and do all this with each software's settings equal where ever I could find those settings. Further experimenting finally found a way to create the SAME file FROM the SAME sources in a PDF of 11megs. (yet anutter software to use, just need to remember to use it the next time rather then the other stuff also installed on my PC.) For me the learning and messing with getting to this goal was worth it. For Years I've used Foxit as my primary PDF reader, and it has NO trouble with my 11meg PDF of 16x16 puzzles. I suspect Adobe also will handle the 11meg file, as easily as the 50meg file (But I tossed that so who cares, I'm going with the 11megger) :-) When scanning material, there are several factors that directly effect file sizes. The resolution scanned at (DPI), the color depth, and the saved image file format. A user probably has no control over that if they scan direct to PDF, If that is the case one is usually at the mercy of that software. If the Scanner wishes to clean up the scans then they have to initially save them in a lossless format, that way the cleaning process can be done before saving in a compressed format which usually results in smaller file sizes. -- Paul Holmgren JCI #74145 To announce that there must be NO criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President Right or Wrong, is not only UNPATRIOTIC and SERVILE, but is Morally TREASONABLE to the American Public. Your comments regarding the help and interest for this event coming only from overseas, leads me to see that you have experienced the same apathetic response that the current QUANTA committee members have, for many years, experienced from the South-UK QLers (and especially QUANTA UK Members). Although the percentage attendance of the UK QUANTA members at QUANTA events during the last decade has been unacceptably low, it is far greater than the attendance of the OS QUANTA Members (which one can count on one had with half the digits removed!). It will be interesting to see what the attendance is like in Edinburgh from both UK and OS. So far of the names I have 9 are overseas and 8 UK. (I believe there are two more overseas but I do not have their names.) All told 6 countries should be represented. Those of you who have spent some time as a QL Trader have the benefit of a wider address book of QLers than QUANTA has (their address book is limited to UK and OS members past and present), which gives you the edge when it comes to filling the void left by the apathetic UK QLers. All the OS QUANTA members, have been invited (like the UK ones) to every event that QUANTA has put on, be it a Workshop (one or two days in length), Show or any other name that you would like to call it (QUANTA has consistently called it a workshop on the grounds that it is the attendees who make it into whatever type of event they want, when (and if) they get there.) In practice I don't think Quanta shows have been workshops for about 10 years, with the exception of QLis21 and possibly 2011 when we had Quanta issues (constitution and subscription). You have also identified that when QUANTA were able to attract UK people with any QL savvy to a QUANTA event, then we used them to give a talk or demonstration (and under the direction of a previous QUANTA Chairman, contributed financially to their out-of-pocket expenses - a move which has been greatly criticised as QUANTA Workshops/Annual General Meetings cost too much to put on). But then, QUANTA has got both money that it is not afraid to spend (since no one else seems interested in using it) and some equipment which you are welcome to use if you need it (Projector Screen for presentations). Very good policy and much appreciated. I was going to make use of it when I did the activities for Solihull in 2007, but I think my speakers all said it was not necessary. As far as I know we don't need to use any of Quanta's equipment, although I was prepared to request the projector. The church are being generous in letting us use their facilities. One thing I would appreciate from Quanta is if someone would be prepared to say a few words about electronic participation in meetings. I am not thinking in terms of the technical details, but more how it has turned out in practice. It is also fair to say that the current QUANTA Committee have been in service for many years unlike some other EX-QUANTA committee members who, when times got tough, backed away from their volunteered responsibilities, or resigned from QUANTA altogether! And finally, you seem to have accepted that one needs local people on the ground to investigate the availability of suitable venues for an event such as QL-is-30 and expecting people to travel hundreds of miles to do this is a complete waste of time, effort and money. So we wish George Gwilt, John Sadler and all the QUANTA SQLUG Subgroup all the best in their efforts to host the QL-is-30 event in 2014. Many a moon ago Mr. Koenig started asking me for the pertinent poo about the PM version QL I still have. I finally got it out and took a screwdriver to it to get the info he chases. Somewhere deep in the hind brain still lurks the impression that Frank Davis and I once fired it up had it working. But (Murphy's Law) after a bit of reflecting on what I saw inside this old QL has me questioning that memory. I Do recall reading that most PM version QL's had the 'dongle' to get the ROM code past the 32K memory range. This particular machine was not made for the USA market, so it has the UK connectors on the backside. The EPROMs in this unit are blue sticky labeled (ballpoint pen) QL PM and QL PM 4000, both are D27128-3's so they are 16K chips. So Am I missing some code still?? It's been at least 20+ years since it has seen daylight or had power applied to it, so, Yups, the original membrane has died. :-) Other then that as far as I know its all original. It does have the ROM port cover attached. (probably not a validation of anything) IF I am missing code, was it another 16K chip? Anyone have the code that I might not have? I do have spare rom cards for the back port. I think they are of the 16K variety. (subject to verification). That's also if this might ever be operational again. My stylesheet went through W3C validation OK, so I thought I was going to have a hard time finding out what was going wrong. Turns out there's actually a simple answer buried deep in Firefox default settings, which are set by default not to allow pages to specify their own colours and fonts. Anyway, I can see why you are having a wee rant at Sourceforge, it is abysmal in IE under Windows 7. Yup, tried it with Firefox, where it's much easier. One of these days I'll see sense and make Firefox the default browser on this system. This is a wise statement in the most part, tis even better to plan on doing that Soon!! A lot less security holes in IE then is years past, BUT they still find holes big enough to drive trucks thru it. Setting up firefox was/is fairly easy, it also will Import all your IE bookymarks for you. The ONLY reason I use IE (The last 8 or more years) is to visit the MS updates site. PERIOD! Would anyone be interested enough for it to be worthwhile cattylogging some of it and listing it for sale here? It's been designed to be a simple to use second generation BASIC and seems to be aimed at youngsters and people who just want to write quick applications for their own use rather than being a development system for commercial/free aps as such. There's info about it here and a getting started guide which gives an idea of what it's about. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/cc950524.aspx Is this some kind of admission that people are wanting to go back to simpler, easier to learn programming systems like our S*Basic for example? I sort of Don't think so, More I think it is a move to promote the .Net program usage. MS lost the fight to control Java and has come up with the .Net programming language to fill out their plan to be all, do all within their auspices. MS has a multi-pronged marketing program in place to foster the growth and usage of the .Net (crap), hoping to supplant and replace java.
