Guys, I am thinking of using rudimentary HTML file viewing capabilities for the QDT help system. I could use some recommendations for programs to look at (if there are any) that give the following: 1) works in normal pointer environment (or could be adapted to) 2) does not require PWS (not all users will be running it) 3) has hot links (open different files from a link) 4) can display some graphics Any suggestions? These could even include other open source code from the Unix world as long as it isn't too complex. I am only looking for a basic capability (tables and figures at the most). As far as I know SMSQ/E does support ED drives if present, at least mine. Real matter is to find PC with such drives : I never saw one ! I think only IBM ones were shipped with this drives. I think this is a reason why disks were so hard to find ... and expensives. A pity because there was no alternative : the only standard remains 1,44Mo disks (Zip, LS120 etc never replaces it). Ultra IO card Hi Nasta, [...] The proper way to 'save' the Q40/60 against ISA card dissapearing, is to produce a Q40 speciffic 'ISA' IO card. This could easily be a combo-card, which would also solve the 'only two slot' problem. All of the functions you mention except network (but then also some additional ones) are actually implemented by one single chip. An additional chip would give you 10/100 Ethernet. One more, and you have full 16 bit sound. And what you have then is exactly the IO chip setup found on the GoldFire. There will hardly be need to 'save' the Q40/Q60 against ISA disappearing. Nevertheless, a multi-purpose extension (lets call it Ultra IO card) could be interesting for Q40/Q60 users if it adds other features, which can not be easily accomplished by using cheap ISA cards. It should have more than Multi-IO, sound and Ethernet which are already established on Q40/Q60. Maybe little goodies like MIDI, I2C, a PIC, CompactFlash slot, or a PCMCIA slot. If it had MultiIO/Ethernet as well, it seems to me that such a card would be a very good preparation for your XY-Fire! All drivers could be written on the Q40/Q60 and would immediately work on XY-Fire, by just changing the register locations. All the best Peter

The problem is when I have done stuff at work and forgotten to synchronise with win1 at home and then 'update' my zip from the 'real' win1 at home hence losing all the stuff I did at work. I wouldn't be difficult to write a program to synchronise automatically. You have quite a gap between work and home I assume (unlike my 1 minute) so clocks need not be too accurate. Simply read all file attributes in designated directories and copy across newer ones as appropriate, of course date stamping them again. I think that is one of the major failings of QDOS/SMSQ - that date stamps are transitory at the O/S level. I know 'backup' in QPAC2 is better, but date stamps should be absolutely fixed, unless forced. -- QBBS (QL fido BBS 2:257/67) +44(0)1442-828255 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.firshman.demon.co.uk Voice: +44(0)1442-828254 Fax: +44(0)1442-828255 TF Services, 29 Longfield Road, TRING, Herts, HP23 4DG

Only guessing because I can't try this until I get home, but when n reaches the value 2. Print returns 3 because of rounding of the QL float precision of 9 digits to 7 digits available for printing. INT operates directly from QL float format and will therefore give the right result: 2. This will again be rounded to 7 digitsby print but obviously 2.000 = 2.00 so nothing will change. Nasta

RE: SV: [ql-users] Nut cutlets - NO QL
I totaly agree : almost all what I learn on the QL 15 years ago is still up to date. In PC world no one finish a (commercial) program because when it is on the market environment had moved (OS, machine, memory, ...) and there is no time left for feed back (and correction). I suspect development teams are already drop when the product is sold. To be compared with, says, continuous support for C68 by Dave Walker team since 1992 or last update in Prowess (now in public domain) by PROGS -Message d'origine- De : Timothy Swenson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Envoy : jeudi 8 mars 2001 21:07 : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Objet : Re: SV: [ql-users] Nut cutlets - NO QL On Mar 8, 7:40pm, Malcolm Cadman wrote: I agree that programming on the QL is in fatc quite a joy - once you have made the effort to learn how to do it. Programming on the PC (either in Windows or Linux) is easier from the aspect that there is more documentation, more tools, and more people. I like programming on the QL cause if I want to tackle a particular programming subject, odds are, I'd be the first to do it, thereby making my program valuable to the QL community. In the PC world, odds are you are not the first to do it, thereby making your program just another sheep in the herd. Plus, I've been using QDOS for 15 years. 15 years of getting to know a single OS with minor revisions (from a SuperBasic programmer view point). In the PC world, 15 years covers a lot of OS revisions with major differences (MS-DOS to Windows being the biggest). From language of choice (Pascal in 1986 to C, to C++, to Java, to ) to programming tools (many different in the PC world). The QL has been something I've known and I've seen no need to change. Since I program for fun, the QL is much funner than a PC. Unix is more fun than a PC, but no even close to the QL. Tim Swenson

RE: [ql-users] coulours on SMSQ
Photon is very fast indeed. But (same question for PhotoQL) does it takes care and maintains proportions ? I think pixel shape is different in said 512x256 and 800x600. And why is there only 1024x600 and 1024x768 screen in QPC2 (I think 1024x512 is best to preserve standard screen ratio) Claude
[ql-users] coulours on SMSQ
A stated in the last QL2D, new release of Photon (from Dave Westbury) as found on DJ's web page is fast (for QL hardware) : on QPC2 it takes less than 20seconds to display a 200k file. Compared (not a criticism) to PhotoQL v0.18 (from Roberto Porro) found on Thierry Godegroy'site it is 5 or 6 time faster : but PhotoQL is only v0.18 and supports too GIF, PNG, PCX and BMP files (not my favourite : TIFF ;-(! With this two pieces of software we can at least see what can be done with GD2 ! It would be nice if others software can take advantage of such tools so that work is not done twice Claude
RE: [ql-users] QPC2v2 again
Personaly I think QPC2 and Q40 are both importants. But considering the lack of production, QPC2 is nowaday the only way to upgrade your QL (and have access to GD2). And it is a good product that gives us the opportunity to have SMS evrywhere with only a HD disk (and a CD if you need applications).
