the other day in a line at Fry's electronics, a kid said to me, I've always
wanted to put a gas motor in one of those things. (my electric wheelchair) I
said, you wouldn't like it - too unstable. He said, Maybe, but it would
be fun while it lasted. I just smiled I used to talk like
that when I was 10 feet tall and bullet proof... now I know better.

Re: [QUAD-L] FW: gas pumps

2008-05-27 Thread oconnelldb
I'm not real sure just how much gasoline expands and contracts from 35
degrees to 110 degrees ( typical temp span here in Phoenix ) but that is on
my to-do list to find out. I've heard this argument before and dismissed
it as a micro-cause of bad mileage as opposed to running the A/C, jack
rabbit starts, and the 'square' effect of speed ( force of plowing wind at
80 mph is twice that of going 40 mph). [Or is it twice every 10 mph... I
forget - I'll look it up.] IF the 'swell' factor of hot gas over cold gas
is say a teaspoon per gallon, that ratio is 168/167 or 0.99405.This
means that 20 mpg turns into 19.88 mpg or a trip of 300 miles (15 gallons)
turns into 298.21 miles. One foolish step on the gas or a little headwind
and your 1.79 miles total can come and go many times over. A similar
supposed savings by not pumping too fast because the extra bubbles you get
reduce your gas mileage leaves me similarly non-flushed.OH, the argument
that the two numbers shown on the pump not matching up correctly seems a lot
less likely than just not getting a full gallon when it says you did. NOW,
let's see you measure out exactly one gallon - plus or minus a teaspoon. :)

It's just as easy, if not moreso, to rig a pump so the gallons and price
shown actually *do* match but have it pumping less. So the 10 gallons
divided by 10 method won't necessarily tell much.

Instead, you'd need need a very accurate 1 or 2 gallon container to fill
just rigjht... then see if all the numbers match per gallon pumped.

CNN reported today that pump calibrations at US stations are made assuming
the gas is at 60 degrees F. If as is warmer than 60 F you get less energy
(hydrogen-carbon molecules) from it -- if it's cooler than 60 F you get
more. Depending where you live in the US this could be a huge difference.
So my van should get better mileage in Bangor, ME than it does in Tucson,
AZ.

It reported that pumps in Canada autocalibrate based on temperature so
stations don't lose out (gas gets cooler more often there). Tanks in the
UIS don't adjust for high/low temperature deviations even though it's a
very easy thing to fix.

A truck driver tested fuel from a pump and it was over 78 F. At that rate
(if it's consistent) he would be overpaying about $1250 this year.

thanks Dana,
But as an ASE certified Auto Repair Technician, I
would like to point out something... sometimes cheapest isn't best,

many of the cheaper fueling places like most Maverick Stores 7 Elevens are
carrying Ethanol blended alcohol/gasoline combo fuel, while it can be
cheaper it also has downsides of causing fuel wasting and lowered fuel economy
over the long haul in fuel injected vehicles..

running non ethanol contining fuel brings better mileage when the vehicle is
kept properly maintained, reduces the frequency of injector and/or fuel pump
replacement becoming necessary, and fuel filters clog and need replacement
less often too...

Personally in my vehicles because of this I only buy Chevron, Texaco,
Shell gas in my cars trucks except if its an emergency, (I'm out of gas
without
a choice because I have to get what is closest at the time)

increased vehicle repair costs does not offset the original savings
resultant from the purchase of ethanol containg fuel...

In 1999 my testimony at our State House defeated a Mandatory Ethonol Bill
in the State of Idaho... presented by uneducated legislators... My
presentation of how its negative effects didn't accomplish their stated goal///

to clean up Idaho's air quality thru reduced vehicle emmissions.. I proved
that the alcohol absorbs water and when it has absorbed all it can the remai
ning water in limbo in the fuel travels with the fuel and corrodes the wear
spots in the moving parts of the injectors and later causes the vehicles which
are running ethanol to give higher emmissions unless they are repaired.. to
correct the problem

with straight gasoline fuel this corrosive process happens at a much slower
rate if at all..
as its not the same...

Dana please consider forwarding a copy of this precautionary letter to your
friends who also recieve this email

just trying to help too

was dxd in 1990 but the symptoms can be traced back to 1976 July 4
Bicentennial Year, while watching the tall ships parade sailing along the
Hudson river, I felt dizzy and lost vision of left eye for a few minutes,
my father took me to the shade of a tree and wet papers an placed them on
my head, in 15 minutes I felt some relief.

I forgot about the case, began to fall specially in the subway on my

Once I fell and hit my head and side of face, stopped short of a few

These problems forced me to put my papers in after 34 years

Is now 11 years I don't work and my condition's declined quite

I don't force myself to do anything, I don't compromise with anybody,

They are available at the big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes and Menards.

The cheaper models work well but may be affected by extreme heat, cold, sun
and rain, depending on where it is located and mounted. Some are wired.
Others are wireless, depending on the features you want. Security should
always
be considered when planning on these kinds of systems.

Hi every one,
I use to really love my coffee !! At my office I never knew what kind would
be brewed and it really didn't matter. By the time the great aroma reached
me, I was on my feet going toward it and would by reaching for my cup. There
were several different flavors of creamer and stirring flavor spoons for
them. On many days I wanted it black with 1 sugar.
Now I had to give coffee or hot drinks up. I have tried different cup
holder and spoons , but I will shake it out
and spill it..usually on me.
Today is very stressful,, and I would love a cup right now. Thanks for the
memories,
Kathy in Mississippi

Hi all,
I'm so excited about what I just did a had to share it with you guys
because I know that you all will understand. I brewed myself a cup of
coffee. It's a really miserable rainy day out here and I came home alone, and
I
wanted to have a cup of coffee. I poured water in the reservoir, I placed the
filter in the filter cup, I opened the coffee canister, I scooped out the
coffee, put the scooped back in and put the lid back on, turned on the coffee
maker with a rocker switch, got out a mug for the coffee, poured coffee into
the mug, put in the sugar, opened the refrigerator to get out the creamer,
poured the creamer and returned back to the refrigerator, and enjoyed my cup
of
coffee completely. Then I cleaned the coffee pot up, and I put it away. It
was the best damn coffee I ever had!
Just had to share it with you all, have a great day, everybody.

For the last 8 years I've been confined to a wheelchair due to a spinal cord
injury.  The 42 years prior I lived a life looking up at people not because of
my injury but because I'm a 4'6 dwarf.  Yes, I said dwarf not midget as midget
is a derogatory in the dwarf community.  A little like the 'N' in the black
community.

Living life as a dwarf was a cake walk compared to my life now, as I am now
pretty much home bound and with the exception of a few things am dependent on
someone to assist me.   I can feed myself, if the food is cut up and of course
prepared.  I can get my shirt off most of the time, but all other clothes have
to be put on and taken of my
wife or daughter.  When I'm out in the community,  there are many times that
the city sidewalk don't have curb cut outs or theres a cut out on one end not
other.  Believe me the city gets tired of me showing up at their monthly
meeting complaining about this or that.  In stores I will usually ask someone
to reach something off the shelf or if no one comes, I'll reach as high as I
can and knock something that won't break down to the ground.  Nothing pisses
off a store manager than to haves for his displays come tumbleing down like a
stack of 2 litter plastic bottles, toilet paper, peaches and oranges etc.  Now
every time I go back to the same store all the store employees are aware I'm
there.

In most cases though when I am out most people are more than happy to assist
me.  It's really all in the way you ask for that assistance that
 matters.

But, there is a shortage in acres planted of rice. This year farmers are
growing corn and soy beans for the fuel. The price of gas didn't go up during
the last six weeks. The value of the dollar dropped. Can you say, INFLATION.
You may wonder why this obscene tax was levied on those with fixed incomes? Why
has there been no attempt to cut spending of military dollars in parts of the
world that our military isn't even in? Why has welfare tripled this year. Not
welfare for people, but welfare for corporations. We deposit billions of
dollars into numbered swiss bank accounts and it comes under foreign aid.
Will anyone ask these questions at a presidential debate?

Exactly WHAT money gets spent on isn't nearly as important as the fact that it
gets spent on SOMETHING.?? The flow of money is what keeps our economy going.?
The people give it to the candidates who skim a little that they can toss
around, then it goes to movie makers to make those foolish 'promise-all' adds,
and to TV stations, who pay employees, who buy groceries, who pay farmers, who
buy tractors the employees of which buy groceries and gas.. on and on.?
Even saving your money in a bank keeps it in circulation so someone else can
borrow it and keep it moving.? We reward people for borrowing here by giving
them write offs? and punish them for saving by way of taxes.? By giving money
to foreign countries, the circulation for OUR country slows down a bit - unless
of course they buy our products.? A slow economy is the true villain.

It's good to see the Teach (as Breezy would say) posting on the Q-List

they
don't last long before I need to change them. The silicone coated latex

work best for me too, in my experience.

I?have had problems sleeping since 1995.?I had a very serious case of pneumonia
and it damaged my lungs so badly they din't think I'd ever be able to get off
oxygen. Well, I did, but I never sleep more than?2-3 hours at a time and often
it takes 2-3 hours to return to sleep. The past few years I tried using pot and
it would help immensly at first. I've given it up because it no longer has the
effect and all my drunken relatives frown on it. They would use that as an
excuse not to visit me. I can't say they light up my life, but I do get lonely.
It isn't addictive so, it wasn't a problem to stop.

I do take valium, vicodin and oxycodone (not all at once) so you would think
sleep would come easy. It doesn't and I do get depressed watching old movies as
the sleep timer runs down and then listening to the building settle.

I have taken all the over the counter preperations like tylenol pm, even
getting some stuff from tv that uses triptiphan.

My doctor doesn't want to prescribe anything and seems to feel that it may
simply be normal for me to sleep a few hours a day. Once I'm in my chair, I'm
not drowsy or sleepy. The orthopedic appliances in my chair that are?twisting
and forcing me straight would wake up a dead person.

Do many of you get by on 3 to 5 hours sleep a day?

Speaking of money? the recent write-down by Citibank of 12 Billion is an
effort to clear off junk from their balance sheets so they can get back to
banking business stuff.? Their balance sheet has a total of 2.2 Trillion
dollars on it so 12 billion represents 1/2 of one percent of their balance

the Iraqi war in the past 6 years.? Pretty amazing numbers huh?.?

Hey Danny!

From what I understand the typical pork barrel spending (i.e. earmarks) are
a
miniscule part of Congressional spending. The majority of it is currently war
spending and regular budgeting that's been necessary for running our
country--which includes all the interest we paid to other countries to which
were in debt.

As for what we spend in Iraq, I understand we spend the same amount there in 3
weeks as we've spent in all six years in Afghanistan, a country that really was
involved in 9/11.

(I love talking politics and I've been surprised not to see much of it here.
It
used to get quite heated when I was here before.)

Best regards,

First of all- how many of you are excessively skinny? I have been told by my

Dang Dave- I have weight envy haha! Seriously- I am 6' and maybe a buck
twenty (I dunno, haven't been weighed in years, so just guessing), but my

Anytime a quad gets any procedure done at the hospital I think it is wise to
have someone there as your backup. Someone that knows your disability and

spinal

I grew up in a neighborhood of dog lovers and several cops that trained dogs
for police work. I don't remember food being used often. The dogs were
encouraged to play with a single toy called a kong. Whenever the dog
performed
right hed get a short 30seconds of playing with his kong. After a 20 minute
training session it was time for yard play and morning or evening meals then a
45 minute walk. Daily repetition and adding to each dogs skills and
responsibilities made very intuitive dogs.
The reason you don't use food often when training is that many dogs
associate food with being good instead of doing it for love from his master.
I'm not saying you can't do it how your doing it since I can't keep a dog
here and I just play with dogs that want to at the park. (they will eat stale
bread from a stranger if you train them food is love.)
Dogs learn from each other so if you have a dog that barks to go potty you
can place the two together and after a day or two both will bark to go out and
come in. Socializing a dog in training can increase learning a lot. yes,
they can learn bad habits so watch close. Never show affection to a dog in a
hyper state. Because your in a wheelchair many trainers would use electronic
collars on larger dogs. These should be turned down after awhile and gone in a
year. If the dog still needs it you need a different dog. ALL DOGS BITE!
Anyone that says their dog doesn't bite only means it probably won't.
The walks are important. Do not let the dog pull the leash. Always think
calmly and never yell when a dog is close, dogs understand your moods not your
speeches.

good luck with your dog,
john

I am a retriever lover. In my experience... they are mellow. :-). I had
two black Labrador retrievers in the early 90s.

Anyway, I am one who has trained my current Golden Retriever to do things
for me. I cannot use my fingers (and barely my hands) either and have little
arm movement. What I did was use a lap tray and have the sliced-up treats on
it. Then, after the correct performance, I pushed one of the treats off of
my lap tray with my arm/hand for the reward.

I learned how to use clicker training and it is the most widely used type
of training nationwide or worldwide today. Do a search on clicker training
and you will see why and how! That is... if you are not already using it.

Hey Everybody -- thanks for the welcome.

I am 42 years old and a C5/6 complete quadriplegic due to a car accident in
a wind storm. In December of 2000, the top part of a tree broke off and fell
on our minivan while we were driving about 35 or 40 miles an hour on a back
road. Wrong place at the wrong time. My husband and I both broke our necks
and had surgery to get them fused. There was more damage to my side of the
van, which left me a quadriplegic. My husband fortunately did not have any
permanent damage. I have movement of my arms, but no finger movement.

We are in the midst of training our three-month old AKC yellow lab, which we
got when she was seven weeks old. My husband is doing a great job with
her. She was the youngest and most mellowest of the whole litter and should

guy who broke his neck a few years ago and is currently in a funk thinking

lives about 2 miles from me. He is 63 and broke his back on a trampoline
14 years ago and then fell out of bed 4 years ago and broke his neck at C1.
He is in pretty bad shape with only a little movement in his arms and none in
fingers or anywhere else. He has been plagues with UTIs and bed sores and
can't seem to stay out of the hospital for vary long. I chatted with him for
about an hour and he told me he doesn't have a computer since he can't
operate one. He asked if I would mention him to you guys and that maybe

I could loan him to get his feet wet if any of you could spark an interest.

less hair mess and smaller poops when they use my house for their potty. I
think I broke them of peeing in my hallway by feeding them there - right on
the bare ( tile ) floor when they decide to freshen their scents. Most times
I use their dishes though. We have had a dry hall for about 2 weeks now.
Before the black one got here, I had no problems. There was no foreign

3) you believe some patients are alive only because it's
illegal to kill them.

4) you recognize that you can't cure stupid.

5) you own at least three pens with the names of

6) you believe there's a special place in hell for the

7) you believe that saying it can't get any worse
causes it to get worse just to show you it can.

8) you wash your hands BEFORE you go to the bathroom.

9) you believe that any job where you can drive to work

My last trip to the hospital in Nov of '06 nearly killed me.
I went septic from a bad UTI and lay in bed for 11 days thinking I was about

because of the strong antibiotics. There were a few very pretty 20 year old

Funny you mention the bedside commode. My hospital couldn't find one

mean, the bathroom is only a few steps away, what's the big deal? This
basically points out the quad-ineptness of our modern day hospitals. We have

Dogs can be remarkably intuitive but I can't help believe it is the trainer
that develops the dog in ways we call smart. My great Aunt had a Chihuahua

An IQ test is a lot like how they use to weigh pigs in Louisianna. They

Congratulations Dan,

so glad that your daughter got you a puppy. Do you know how large it is
expected to be, according to its parents. I have always wondered what a
Chihuahua would be like as a pet, I have a female, 5 pound Yorkie that just
turned
four years old and I really love her as a companion. Zoe likes to be on my
lap and she will lay on top of my phone and iPod. She loves it when I don't
have my Plexiglas on my lap and she can have it to herself. The person I have
gone to for my nails as a small Chihuahua about the same size as Zoe, that is
really cute that she sometimes has in her shop. She is afraid of my dog
that is on my lap, she hides under the tables but they don't bark at each
other.

Keep us posted on your little daughter. What is her name?

Dana

Dave, so your little dog is not fixed yet. I have heard that little boys
like to do that. I only had little girls.

What is his name?
Dana

I really like my 2 guys. my 'stud' needs a fix which is in the pipeline -
when he gets started, nobody is safe. poor little guy runs around humping
thin air. the breed is very ferocious around strangers, my guys go after pit
bulls and great danes. also, anybody entering your house needs to be careful
and not turn their backs to them right away. mine sleep with me, they love
to cuddle at night thus making it very hard to roll over. All in all, I
would definitely recommend this breed - they are very attentive companions and
make great intruder alerts.

bulls and great danes. also, anybody entering your house needs to be careful

[QUAD-L] Jewish Rye Bread

2008-02-06 Thread Oconnelldb

Two old guys, one 80 and one 87, were sitting on their usual park bench one
morning.

The 87 year old had just finished his morning jog and wasn't even short of
breath.

The 80 year old was amazed at his friend's stamina and
asked him what he did to have so much energy

The 87 year old said 'Well, I eat Jewish rye bread every day. It keeps your
energy level high and you'll have great stamina with the ladies.'

So, on the way home, the 80 year old stops at the bakery. As he was looking
around, the lady asked if he needed any help. He said, 'Do you have any
Jewish rye bread?'

She said, 'Yes, there's a whole shelf of it . Would you like some?'

He said, 'I want 5 loaves.

She said, 'My goodness, 5 loaves...by
the time you get to the 5th loaf, it'll be hard'

He replied, 'I can't believe it, everybody in the world knows about this but
me.'

Hi all!

I picked up my van yesterday. Someone on the list said it would take 5
months to get it done and that's how long it took. It's a world of difference
than my full size. I feel confined but I like it. Everything is at my reach.
It's quiet. rides smooth and has lots of power. When I first got behind the
wheel, I looked like a teen-ager getting use to the gas...bucking car:-) I have
a habit of calling it a car because it's so much smaller than my old van. It
turns quicker than my full size. Nowto figure out the radio CD player!
I'm really happy, I love it!

I weigh around 210 - one tenth of which is 21 pounds. that would be 336
ounces or 28 twelve ounce beers.?? 1 Gallon is 128 ounces so 336 ounces is 2.6
gallons.? Have you ever seen a 72 ounce steak like they serve at the Amarillo
Steak house (famous for if you can eat it all in an hour, it's free) - this
would mean I would have to eat 4 and a half of these dinners, OK with potato
and salad mixed in maybe only two of these big dinners - but, IN 6 MINUTES?
Doesn't a loaf of bread weigh about a pound?? Twenty one loaves of bread?
WOW I don't think so.? Each can is 8% protein 4% fat - hum 26 ounces of protein
and 13 ounces of fat, I'd weigh a ton in a week.? Seems kind of unfair doesn't
it

I like classic movies, however, I haven't been watching too many lately. I
guess it's because I have a DVR and for me it has been unbelievable. I used
to watch a lot of classic movies during the summer months, but the networks
and cable stations have finally learned that there are many of us out there
looking for newer shows to watch it during the summer, so they have started
making new series during that timeframe.
About two years ago I had a TiVo and I had it set up so that any movie with
Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, and a couple other actors were recorded. I even
watched quite a view Hitchcock movies during that time frame.
It's kind of interesting how I grew to like the classics. My first exposure
was Arsenic and Old Lace. I watched it when I was a young 19-year-old
private in the Army and fell in love with the movie. I have seen and probably
seven or eight times over the years.
Back around three years ago one of my professors was talking about
Casablanca and when he looked around the room and he realized that the
majority of the
students had blank looks on their face. He asked how many of them had seen
the movie and was absolutely shocked to find out that only one or two had.
Well, I wasn't in that particular class, but my brother was and I was
embarrassed to admit that I hadn't had an opportunity to see the film yet
either.
So, the next time it was aired on television are recorded it and really
enjoyed
this movie. I had no idea how many catchphrases came from that movie alone.

At one point I was so hooked on classics that I would even watch a movie
which was quite slow so I could witness some wonderful cinematography. Touch
of
Evil (1958) directed by Orson Welles comes to mind. The opening was pretty
phenomenal and one particular scene where there is a small piece of trash
floating in the hypnotic circular motion through the scene was fantastic.
Well, enough of that. Take care.

grew up in the era and genre.

So it was with great pleasure that I found a good Bogart movie last night
that I had never seen before. It was entitled,'Marked Women' co-staring Betty
Davis and was a 1937 production. As Bogart starred in mostly B movies in his
early career, it wasn't a bad production. It was also quite evident that
Bogart had not reached his potential yet.

I am curious to know if by chance there are any other fans of classic moves
here. Those of us who share the love of the black and white cinemas talk by
the hours about the likes and dislikes of the classics and sharing bits of
trivia. For example, the Bogart movie 'Casablanca has been rated as the most
Romanic movie in the history of US films.

Another circa favorite of the black white films are the Bowery Boys,
produced from the late 30's up through the 1950s. These films have
developed a
cult following and produced such loveable characters as Slip, Sach, Chuck,
Whity and Louie, the sweet shop owner. Anyone on the list old enough to
remember these films? Some of these films were entitles 'Hell's Kitchen,
Angles
With Dirty Faces and The East Side Kids'. Much thanks goes to Ted Turner for
airing the TCM television network which airs these classics 24/7 commercial
free.

Perhaps I might just invoke interest in this subject or even the associated
field of literature, but then on the other hand this subject might be
perceived as the ranting of an old man.

How different we all are. If someone wants to help me, I just step back and
let them proceed. I know I can open a door or remove my jacket - after 40
years in this, I don't feel the need to prove anything to myself any more.
People who offer to help really need to do so for some inner fulfillment. I'm
cool with that and am more than happy to help them satisfy their inner needs.
Sometimes I'm just plain damned tired of opening my own door or pouring my
own beer even though I can (in most cases). I agree with Dan about saving my
strength for the important things - like unhooking bras and the like.
Whenever I spend time in my manual chair, I can really feel the strain in my
shoulder blades and fingers. If my dependence on a power chair puts off
reconstructive surgery or arthritis - deal me in. I really feel INVINCABLE in
my
power chair.

How ya Doin. Here is the problem I face in regards to teethpullers. At one

kidney's (presently at 47%) and high blood pressure, plus several smaller
peripherals thrown in for grins. The original nerve damage from the crushed
spinal
cord shut down every bodily organ except the heart and lungs.

When I was finally released from the hospital, I asked the neurosurgeon what
I might expect during the forth coming years. His answer was, You're
alive, so you are ahead of the game. From now on, you're on your own, so
expect
anything.

Consequently, when I reported this to the prospective oral surgeons, they
all tell me, Thanks, but no thanks.

Some months ago, I pushed ahead with the issue of tooth extraction and had
10 removed. The oral surgeon was not concerned with my quadriplegic status,
and put me under with general anesthetic. When I came to, 10 teeth were gone,
but so was the oral surgeon and his nurse. They left and went to another
part of the city, leaving only a young intern girl and my wife to greet me. I
awoke extremely sick (caused by the agnostic), and before I realized it, I
was put in a wheelchair and wheeled out into the middle of a parking and left
there. Two days later I was back in the hospital with infected lungs.

For the last 6 years I have been without a physiatrist, as my rehabilitation
center (Van Mater Rehabilitation Hospital in Rockford, Illinois) has had
none available. This has changed now though, as I am finally being assigned
one. I can hardly wait.

Perhaps the addition of the physiatrist on my medical team will enhance the
issue of finding an oral surgeon.

Thanks for listening. This list actually plays a more important therapeutic
role than many of the health professional assigned to monitor our physical
conditions, because the list members here walk the walk on a daily basis.

Thanks for listening and allowing me to blow off a little steam. Bill of Il.

[QUAD-L] Researchers have grown a beating heart in a jar.

2008-01-15 Thread oconnelldb

University of Minnesota researchers grew a rat heart in a
landmark effort that may foreshadow the ability to grow tissue to repair
organs, or even create organs for transplant.

By JOSEPHINE
  MARCOTTY, Star Tribune

Last update: January 13, 2008 - 11:07 PM

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have grown a beating heart in a
  jar.

They used detergents to strip a rat heart of its own cells, leaving behind
a white, three-dimensional scaffolding of connective tissue. They then
infused
it with living cardiac cells from newborn rats, which multiplied and grew
into
a fully functional heart -- a first in the field of tissue engineering.

We've figured out how to use nature's own matrix -- chambers, valves,
blood vessels, said Dr. Doris Taylor, the lead researcher and director of
the
university's Center for Cardiovascular Repair. She said that the technique
holds promise for growing human tissue to repair not only hearts, but many
other parts of the body. It might be possible, she said, to grow whole organs
for patients who need a transplant.

Other tissue engineering scientists around the country said there are
enormous obstacles to using the technique for people.

But they described the work as exciting and a landmark.

It's gutsy. I am very impressed with her going right for the meat of it
... and showing remarkable results, said Dr. Buddy Ratner, a University of
  Washington bioengineer.

The research was published online Sunday by Nature Medicine, a journal
  known for publishing cutting-edge science.

Growing human tissue outside the body has been a medical Holy Grail for
decades. Progress accelerated in recent years with the use of stem cells,
special cells in embryos and adults that can be manipulated to grow into many
kinds of tissue. The National Institutes of Health has provided millions of
dollars for tissue engineering, but so far researchers have had success with
only a few types of human tissue -- primarily bladders, skin, and blood
  vessels.

A challenging task

Though growing heart tissue holds the greatest therapeutic promise of all,
it also has proven the most difficult. The heart is a complex structure of
chambers, valves, and thick-muscled walls fed by an intricate system of blood
vessels. And it doesn't just contract; it also twists, as if the muscle were
wringing the blood out of the chambers and into the body.

Researchers have tried to grow cardiac patches in the lab to use for
repairing damaged hearts. But in order to work, tissue patches must be quite
thick, and researchers have not found a way to provide the growing tissue
with
enough oxygen. And the cells need a three-dimensional scaffold on which to
grow, one that allows the cells to contract in the right way to do the
  mechanical work of a heart.

Scaffolding is the challenge where we are doing most of our work, said
Ratner, who is trying to build an artificial structure with the same kind of
  material used for contact lenses.

Taylor said that one of the rules in her laboratory is to give nature the
tools and get out of the way. That's how she and her co-researchers came up
with the idea of adopting a strategy that's been used elsewhere for smaller
parts of the body. They stripped a heart of its cells -- or de-cellularized
it
-- leaving behind what's called the extracellular matrix.

When you think about a steak, it's the gristle, she said. It provides
both the blood-vessel system to deliver oxygen and the three-dimensional
structure. The researchers placed it in a glass chamber and gave it oxygen,
  nutrients and fluids to pump.

The cells know they are in a heart and that they should act like a heart,
  she said.

She has done the same thing with a pig heart and believes it could also be
done with kidneys, livers, and lungs.

Many healing possibilities

Some experts said that for transplantation, the technique could prove most
useful for organs other than the heart.

Long term, a transplant of the heart is not necessarily going to be the
preferred therapy, said Dr. Robert Nerem, director of the bioengineering
institute at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga. I think there
may be more interest in repair of the heart.

The first adaptation for cardiac patients might be for infants born with
  congenital heart deformities.

Those heart problems are usually identified before the child is born. Stem
cells from the umbilical cord and the amniotic fluid could grow the heart
  parts the baby needs.

The biggest hurdle is cell type, said Dr. William Wagner, professor of
bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Since Taylor is an expert in
stem cell biology, I bet she is well equipped to try that, he said.

The technique also could be used to make patches for adults who have lost

Hi all.? I need to respond to those who have
written to my letter during the last few days, as this is very beneficial to
me.? During the last 6 years, the total time I have had my spinal cord
crush, I have not been bothered by depression, until now.? I've got to work
extra hard at breaking out of it.? All I want to do lately is just sit and
do nothing.? I do mean nothing, so writing to those of you here on the list
is a good exercise for me.

?

Ok, here's something new.? Anyone ever run
into a wall when it comes to dental work?? Because of my t-1 condition, I
must have all my teeth removed.? Problem is, dentists do not want to touch
me.? The state of Illinois is great when it comes to paying the medical
bills, but not so good on the dental end.

?

I have been told that the dentists, like the
medical doctors, are afraid to become involved with us.? I was turned down
again by a dental clinic in Chicago, and it was the last one.

?

So, I'm wondering if anyone else on the list
has had this problem, and if so, what they may have done to solve the
problem.

?

Again, many thanks to those who have seen replies
to my last letter.

?

Over the years I have been amazed at the differences between levels of
spinal cord injury. As is so often noted, we vary tremendously. We each have
our
own demons to deal with, and we each deal with them in often ingenious ways. I
have often felt frustrated that it was so difficult to find the answers for
seemingly small problems.
Until I came up on this list a couple of years ago, I had been relatively
isolated from other quads. Reno had no physiatrist, so I just used a family
practitioner and she and I dealt with problems as they came up. Lucky for me,
I
hardly had any problems. The biggest whammy was being bitten by a brown
recluse spider, and not having it diagnosed until a lot of damage was done.
Luckily, that was during the time I had insurance. The people on this list
have so
much experience, and are so willing to share it with the rest of us, that
many of the small problems can be resolved rather simply.
At Santa Clara Rehabilitation, they emphasized keeping everything simple.
Since I had very little access to information about quads, I kept it simple.
The first 14 years bowel care consisted of digital simulation every third day,
but after realizing that I was major lactose intolerant we changed it to four
times a week-Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday-and I’ve stayed on that
routine since then.
I did not even have a urologist that was familiar with quads, so I just
stayed with intermittent catheterization, not knowing the options. I do use an
overnight bag with a 14 F red rubber catheter overnight as I do not have
anybody to cath me. I’ve been very fortunate and do not have many UTIs, and
have
never had a serious one. I must admit that having to stop activities in order
to be cathed is somewhat of a nuisance, but if it means that I will not have
to deal with UTI’s I will continue to live with the scheduling problem. Of
course, I cannot be sure that that is why I do not have UTI problems, but if
it
ain’t broke, why fix it? My new urologist told me that one of the advantages
of using intermittent catheterization is that my bladder has stayed a normal
size, and I am able to hold around 500 CC’s before my body lets me know it is
time. If I watch what I eat and drink that is usually around 6 to 7 hours.
Except for pressure sores I have enjoyed remarkable health, and thanks to
the clinitron bed my pressure sores have been cured, and I hope that I can
remain free of pressure sores.
Because I cannot feed myself, it has been relatively easy for me not to gain
weight because I hate being fed by other people. One would think after 17
years that I would be comfortable with it, but the only time it works well is
when I share a plate and realize I am not keeping somebody from eating their
food. JIt’s also very difficult to snack when I have to ask somebody else to
fix it for me.
This summer I had many tests done, because my physiatrist was appalled that
I have not had scans done regularly. Everything was just OK, and luckily for
me everything was in its right place J. They noted I had a couple of
gallstones, and wanted to watch them.
But over the holidays everything changed. My years of being healthy made me
unaware of how sick I was. When my daughter said that I was yellow, and I
had several days of burning pain in my stomach, I went to the ER. Except for
being yellow, everything appeared to be OK-blood pressure, no fever, pulse
rate
OK, and my urine was rather dark, but not really worrisome.
They were extremely busy in the ER, but we let them know I would need to be
cathed in a couple of hours. They were very understanding, and came out a
couple of times to let us know they had not forgotten us, and were able to get
me into a room as quickly as possible. Everything changed however when they
found out I was passing a gallstone and had pancreatitis, and they moved into
high gear. I was admitted, and they explained my options, and we all agreed
that I would have to have my gallbladder removed as soon as the pancreatitis
subsided. My body was ready two days later-not my mind J-and I went to surgery,
only to wake up with a tracheotomy! Certainly not what I was hoping for, as
the anesthesiologist had said there was a 5% chance that I would have to have
a tracheotomy. Unfortunately the scar tissue from my first tracheotomy
prevented a simple intubation, and my daughter had to agree to a tracheotomy.
Now I was facing a much longer stay

Subject: [QUAD-L] Cold? I would suggest these!

For those of you who are out there in states that are bitter cold (I see it is
barely in the teens in Chicago today) or get cold in the house like I do even
though I live in southern Arizona... I'd like to make a suggestion.

My husband bought these for me for Christmas.  He found them the least
expensive on eBay.  They're perfect for gals or guys!

Prior to nine years ago... fashion was very important to me and I would not be
caught dead in sweatpants or anything other than nice jeans, nice shoes,
matching this and that, etc. etc. etc..  But then warmth, necessity and age
allowed me to change my wardrobe somewhat.

In 1997 my feet and ankles began swelling like the sizes of big potatoes.  I
had to stop wearing tennis shoes and turned to other shoes so I would not get
pressure because of my fat feet not fitting in anything.  Further... it seemed
as time goes on... the colder I would get very easily.

Anyway... I wanted to attest that the following Tempur-Pedic Foot Comforters
are very, very nice!  I have been wearing sandals of some sort over the last
seven years and in the winter time I put socks or colored stockings on and then
the sandals.

At first I thought that they would look too big or out of place but they are
actually pretty stylish.  The ones that I have are very dark navy blue (that I
can only tell when I put them on with my black pants) and are so plush that I
just put my bare feet into them.

Also... a sore that I have had for many months has JUST healed although it is
still a little pink.  Since it is my husband would have to deal with the
repercussions of the sore coming back...HE WOULD NOT EVEN ATEMPT OR ALLOW me to
wear these.  But since I am wearing them... that is how soft they are and
rather pressure less (since absolutely no pressure is the only solution to get
rid of a sore).

So if anyone is interested in keeping their feet warm (which will help warm you
all over)... check out the following product:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemrd=1item=120196407260ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:ITih=002#ebayphotohosting

Shipping and handling is free within the United States and this is the best
price we could find on the product.  NO... I am not the seller!

Just trying to help somebody out who easily gets cold.  It is sunny and 64°
here today but chilly in the shade and the same temperature as always in the
house.  But I love my new foot comforters despite that!

it, a hobby can help, just getting out into a public setting where you have
to see and speak to people helps. A local 'watering hole' can be a place to
find chatty people and most churches have various groups of people getting
together to do things. Sitting home alone is not a good way to get out of a
valley. Get active in something and don't be too fast to push people away -
let her decide for herself what she wants. Give life a chance.

Re: [QUAD-L] Warning.....Sexual.

2007-12-19 Thread oconnelldb

Funny how 40 years of SCI, 35 years of happy marriage, three kids and foleys
can dampen the 'urge' so it mostly goes away.  Intimacy gives way to stability
and security, lust turns into gratitude for what lengthy cohabitation brings,
and the spark is kept alive by total strangers that cast that special look and
sometimes add a wink.  it's very nice to you can still turn a head but have no
obligation to prove anything.  the great part is she knows i look, i know she
knows and she knows i know she knows - and we're both cool with it.  she knows
that just because i'm on a diet, it's ok if i look at the menu.   no matter
where i get my appetite, i always come home for dinner.

I don't think that too many members on the list are brave enough to respond to
this one. Thus the tiny thread.  While microphones or things like that are more
important!  LOL   I know the topic of sex has been brought up before but it
does not go anywhere usually.  So either members are not having sex or are not
with a partner.  :-)

Some folks will say that sex plays an important role in a relationship...
especially for the one who is not getting any!  Others will say that sex is
most definitely, and I mean most definitely, NOT a great big thing in a good
relationship.

Actually, it is a little bit of both.  It is not that both partners do not WANT
OR ENJOY sex... because it can be very exciting and joyful.  And it should be!

You are also right that the brain is the most powerful sex organ.  This is even
more true for women.  Women have no idea and (cannot have any idea) what orgasm
for a man (ejaculation) feels like and vice versa.  Obviously for women it is
the clitoris for the sensation part of it and the brain for the mega part of
it.

I remember one of my most powerful orgasms after my injury (I had just turned
15 when my injury occurred so nothing happened before that) occurred when my
partner did something around my ear, neck and my collarbone area that set me
through the ceiling and was definitely an orgasm if I ever had one!!!  So that
is one example.  For women... those are extremely, extremely, extremely
sensitive areas and probably just as much as the clitoris.

But the actual intercourse part of it is a combination of so many things.  The
noises, the whispers, the words, the motions, etc. etc. etc. all help one to
cum.  Feeling sexy for women plays a huge part as well.  For example...
having a négligée or a bra slid so very slowly down the shoulders is really
really erotic!  Or pressing up and around the breasts at the same time or
during something else also adds to the beginning of a climax.

I could go on and on and on.  But don't anyone fool themselves by thinking that
sex is not important to some degree to their partner.  There IS a reason for
masturbation!  And nobody should feel threatened because their partner does
that.

So... all the rest of you scaredy-cats... bring it on!

Hello guys,

Let me get right to it.  This morning I was in the middle of the most erotic
dream I have ever had since my injury when I was awaken just at the moment we
long to remember (the big orgasm).  This dream felt s real that when I woke
up I felt just (well, pretty darn close) like I had a real orgasm, tingling all
over and my insides were too.

You know that feeling after you cum and you're so sensitive that you just can't
take another touch. That!   I think I was moaning just before I woke up also,
because I opened my eyes thinking 'oh shit did my wife just hear me.

I know they say your brain is the most powerful sex organ but damn, I wasn't
expecting it to be like that.
My question is have any of you ever experience this and if so how can you
recreate it?

my best vacations were ones where all I needed was a bed and a jon at the

won't take much percussion and its usually expensive. Mine is attached to the
wall by velcro where it can't get hurt and it will pull off before yanking the

I had to pay out of pocket, I'd never afford it but mine will lift my

As you can tell, we are open to input from quads from anyplace who wish to
join. We are aware that survival of quads in some countries is not always a
priority. Medicine is not equal from one nation to the next. I have known
doctors that have worked in third world countries and the resources simply do
not
exist to do much more than try to comfort a severe spinal injury and let the
person pass on. Those of us in America and other nations that can provide
the medical care often struggle to allow severely handicapped persons to join
into meaningful careers and livelihoods.
I know I have battled against the perception that I'm too handicapped, and
the always painful comment that I'd be better off dead. I once had a lady with
4 children stop and point at me and say, that is what happens to bad
children.. (she may have meant I was ugly)
I've never gotten that on here. People have been very kind and very helpful.
I've learned a lot by reading and participating on here. I'd love to know
more about how paralyzed persons live in many countries, including Ethiopia.

My Best Wishes to You and Yours,
john

Greetings Kemal

Thank You for your post and observation about the numbers of those
participants from developing countries.
There is an old military saying that goes, The closer one gets to combat,
the more obsolete the equipment gets. I can only wish and wonder what
happens outside our country when it comes with survival of people with spinal
cord
injuries. You could become that window of opportunity to let us know. I
can't even imagine
what your daily life is like or how it begins. I hope to visit your website
and see for myself. I would also like to refer our Chicago Chapter of the
National Spinal Cord Injury Association of your website and their comments.
Our best wishes to you and hope that you continue on postings!

[QUAD-L] more broken necks....

2007-12-10 Thread Oconnelldb
Do any of you have family members who broke their necks? My older brother
broke his playing football in 1957 - no paralysis, my (same) brother's 5 year
old grandson broke his going down his bunk bed ladder head first - didn't
know he could get hurt - no paralysis, and now I hear that my 50 year old
cousin
broke his but has 90% movement of his neck, (I'm not sure what that means.)
I feel almost as blessed as a Kennedy.

our fat butts around on a road trip. I'm glad all went well. where are the

Hello All,
I just returned from a week at Disney World with my granddaughter husband.
We had a great time! I haven't flown since 9-11. The airport wasn't bad at
all traveling with a wheelchair. I was able to stay in my power chair all the
way to boarding then my husband transferred me to my manual that fit to the
first row transferred again. The airlines took both chairs away we had no
problems with having to box anything. It was Continental Airlines a direct
flight though. We rented a Dodge Caravan to put my chair in the back go to
all the parks. I found Disney to be very accessible as much as possible. The
trams were accessible. They even had a few rides that were accessible! If
anyone is thinking about an accessible trip, I suggest Disney. My husband did
come home with a sore back from all the transferring. But one of the roller
coasters didn't help that any. We would have checked in to a van rental with a
lift but as it was, all was quite pricey so we had to do without some of the
luxuries of home. When I returned there was a message on my phone from M.C.
Mobility...all was approved and they're ready to work on the modifications to
my van!
