I did this with the same company about three weeks ago. My doc made an appt.
with a physical
Therapist. He measured everything but my penis length. Then he gave it to the
Nu-motion rep, and now I am waiting

Fwd: [QUAD-L] help, AD is happening when laying down at bedtime

2016-04-08 Thread William Willis
Kidney stones could certainly cause ad. They could move when you lie down and
put pressure on painful areas. I know my bladder hurts every morning when I
first wake up. Don't know why. I would bet that stones are the problem. Are you
sure there are no other cuts, sores, etc?

I read the article and thought it sounded quite cool. So I searched for on the
web and found a YouTube video about it. It's nothing like what the article
says. The ReJoyce Hand and Arm Rehabilitation System is basically an exercise
machine. It's like a 4 foot long plastic elbow shaped device. The one end of it
the paralyzed person holds onto as good as they can, the other end is attached
to the table and connected to a computer. The elbow joint let it move in all
directions. So as you move around it moves the cursor on the computer. So you
move it around playing a game on the computer. It helps with exercise, balance,
and coordination. At least the one I saw does not actually open and close your
hand. It looks like it could be a home exercise machine. It might actually help
with balance and coordination. But not the miracle device that open and close
at hand.

With a big blister, I stick a pin in the side and press the liquid out.
Careful not to tear the skin. Apply an antibiotic cream and a bandage. It is
very vulnerable to germs at this time, so keep it covered. The worst thing you
can do is tear the skin off and leave it exposed. Almost guarantees an
infection. I speak from much experience.

When I learned that my college team, the AZ State Sun Devils, would be playing
in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl this year, December 29th at ATT Park in San
Francisco, against the Midshipmen of Navy, I was elated. Jokingly, I said to my
girlfriend: It would be awesome to go to that football game! To my great
surprise she replied Yes, it would.!

We flew from Phoenix directly to Oakland via Southwest Airlines, a very easy
2-hour flight. For those of you who fly, if you ever have a choice between
airlines I highly recommend SW--they do things the right way, in my experience.
We were traveling on a budget so decided not to rent a pricey minivan. Instead,
we would use the extensive public transit system in the Bay area to get around.

Like most of us quads, I don't do well in cold temperatures on a good day, but
I was in for a rough weekend because I didn't realize that I had fractured two
toes in my right foot when my laundry caught onto my joystick and sent me [and
my tootsies] careening into my bedroom furniture. Well, I knew I had hurt my
foot somewhere, but I couldn't see or feel any immediate damage so I wasn't
about to cancel my trip to see the Sun Devils!

The flight went smoothly, but as we departed our plane I noticed that I was
covered with a fine sheen of sweat, the source of this Autonomic Dysreflexia as
yet unknown to me. We collected our luggage and headed out the doors to catch a
shuttle bus to the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit--light rail system.) Wham! The
cold Bay weather hit this sweaty quad like slap from an icy hand. Luckily, we
didn't have to wait long and we were on our way to the BART station. The
shuttle to the BART was tolerable, except for the guy across from me who hadn’t
bathed in a year. I believe it is Federal law that there must be one stinky
person on every bus, and we exceeded that mandate.

A few minutes of icy-cold confusion ensued trying to figure out the BART
ticketing kiosks. After some experimentation with the machines we were happily
ensconced on the train, headed up through Oakland, underneath the Bay and into
downtown San Fran where we'd catch one last bus to take us to our hotel near
Fisherman's Wharf. [Be prepared when the BART starts moving because there are
no chair lock-downs. Powerchairs with electronic breaks have an advantage here,
so long as you don't accidentally hit your joystick.]

I wasn't thrilled about our plan to save money by using public transportation,
but as the BART train shook and rattled its way through the darkness I began
thinking this really isn't too bad! A few minutes later we passed the West
Oakland station and the train went underground--underwater too--for several
minutes as we crossed underneath the Bay. I'm sure I could eventually get used
to riding a train underground, but try as I might I could not avoid the thought
of earthquakes and the horrendous way we'd go out if that tunnel ever
collapsed.

I faked a light-hearted smile at my girlfriend who faked a smile right back. I
attempted to say something whimsical to ease the tension but neither one of us
could hear the other over the screeching and grinding noises in the tunnel--a
nice addition to the apocalyptic scene playing out inside of my fevered brain.

I looked around and saw another powerchair user on the train and was somewhat
comforted by the fact that she looked bored. This is old hat for her; a ho-hum
trip into town that she probably takes often. Arriving at our station she
zipped off the traincar and we hurriedly followed, trying to keep up with her
but she is gone, lost is the sea of humanity exiting these metal rail snakes.
She went that way, my girlfriend says, indicating the direction of the
elevator that would take us to street level at the Embarcadero.

Sorry, Elevator Out of Service, the hand-made paper sign reads. Dammit, I
grumble, but this can't be the only elevator at this station, or that girl
wouldn't have gotten off. Several more very noisy, chilly and frustrating
minutes pass as we ask and search everywhere for another elevator, only to
learn

Hey Greg,

I'm glad to hear Propantheline is working for you. I know it
works real well for me too. I'm not a doctor, but have been a quad for
over 34 years. So, I feel the need to give you a bit of
caution...
Sweating and rapid heart rate--heart beating hard are a quad's
'6th sense'...pain sensory and is a part of dysreflexia...

I cut my 15mg propantheline in half. That way, I can see if I can
stop the sweating w/out my mouth drying out too bad and w/out my heart
beating too hard. If I feel ok, but am still sweating after a
bit, I take the other half. Please be careful b/c what you're dsaying
about your heart beat could be a recipe for disaster. I'm only saying
this b/c I know that feeling.

Please consiider 1/2 a pill.

Here's my 2 cents on the comparison..
Ditropan and propantheline are created for the same purpose...to tighten the
sphincter muscle to eliminate urine leakage. I take ditropan/oxybutynin 5mg
2x/day. But, I view propantheline as a 'pain pill for quads' b/c when we have
pain we sweat and this drug stops it. Or at least, minimizes it. I was
introduced to it by another quad around 20 years ago and was amazed at the
difference it made in my daily living. When it was thought that they stopped
making it, I panicked. So, since a few years back, I've stock-piled it and
refill every chance I can. All I know is, that it works for me, my doc
understands, and it helps me from taking a bunch of addictive, mind-altering
pain meds.
Hope this helps...
Lori

I have somehow missed the boat on propantheline. This is the first time I have
heard of it. I've been taking ditropan (oxybutynin) for sweating. Does anyone
know how the two compare? Is one better than the other? I need some serious
enlightenment, guys.

Hey Greg,

I'm glad to hear Propantheline is working for you. I know it works real well
for me too. I'm not a doctor, but have been a quad for over 34 years. So, I
feel the need to give you a bit of caution...
Sweating and rapid heart rate--heart beating hard are a quad's '6th
sense'...pain sensory and is a part of dysreflexia...

I cut my 15mg propantheline in half. That way, I can see if I can stop the
sweating w/out my mouth drying out too bad and w/out my heart beating too hard.
If I feel ok, but am still sweating after a bit, I take the other half.
Please be careful b/c what you're dsaying about your heart beat could be a
recipe for disaster. I'm only saying this b/c I know that feeling.

Please consiider 1/2 a pill.

A few people here mentioned Propantheline. I tried it and it worked great. I

I really hope it continues to work well, it is so much better.
I just pop one before I start.

FELLOW QUAD, BOBBIE HUMPHRIES SAID I COULD POST THIS HERE ON FACEBOOK I THOUGHT
WAS VERY INFORMATIVE:

  Hi All,
My family opened IrrevocableSupplemental Needs Trust Fund we all
learned a lot going through the process. It must, and only can be, set up
by a lawyer. There are a few different kinds, the one I mentioned and an
Supplemental Needs Trust Fund Special Needs Trust Fund These trust
funds are already written up, you and a lawyer sit down together to
figure out which one best suites your individual needs and situation. It
cost $1,500 to set up with our lawyer.
Here are some questions I had for my Dad's lawyer after I read his will
and the answers; (a one time amount of money was given to me by my father
one month before he passed away, that's why the trust fund was set up.)

Can I have a check written out to my home health aid personally, not the
agency? - Answer - yes
Can I have a check written out to individual people, family members,
friends?
  - Answer - yes

What if I go into a nursing home?
  - Answer - No nursing home, or any other institution, can touch any of
  the trust money.

Can I contest the will because I don't like the trust?
  - Answer - I cannot change what my Dad wrote or wishes were if a judge
finds that Dad was not of sound mind at the time he wrote his will

Is there 1 trust or 2?
 - Answer - Right now there are 2 trusts 1. The one that Patti, my sister
the trustee, opened and has DD as secondary. 2. One Dad established and
has Ray as primary and Michael as secondary. The Ray/Michael trust will
not be set up until Nellie (my step Mother) pass's away They can be merged
  with some of paper work.

  Page 8 Part A
What dose this sentence mean? … the trustee shall annually add to the
principal of such trust the balance of net income not so paid or applied.
  - Answer - The money in the trust will be making intreats, if I don't
spend the intreats then I can not spend it the next year (or 50%?)

In my Fathers will he stated that he wanted a … Supplemental Needs Trust
set up for me -- my sister just set up an Irrevocable Supplemental Needs
  Trust
Are they in conflict of each other AND can monies from the Supplemental
Trust be transferred into the Irrevocable Trust?
  - Answer - yes, but it takes a lot of paper work - you can have more than
  one trust fund
There has to be 2 people on the paper work to open the trust fund at a
bank that you choose, a primary trustee and a secondary trustee I have
my 2 sister's without hesitation. I met my sister Patti at he bank to open
the trust in case I had questions. An investment banker had to open the
trust, so we made an appointment. It took about 11/2 hours total to go
through all the paper work. Then Patti was told that she had to inform
social security about the trust because I collect SSI. She also had to
call the IRS to get a tax ID number because I/she will have to pay tax's
  on the money.
One of the first things I got with the trust money was a Hunter Douglas
motorized window shade for my bedroom $750 since I spend so much time in
bed and I get pounded by the sun.
Dose anybody else here have a trust fund?

I have managed to tape my

still having problems with my catheter not draining properly at times.
Repositioning the bag so that the urine has to travel up seems to help about
50% of the time, but there also seems to be those times when we have to flush
with some saline in order to get it draining again.

When I explain this

Has anyone on this list have the

hand job and a few girls that were not ashamed to show their naked
bodies. From talking to my quad friends, that's about all we ever
got. To me this is very sad but we were never in the right place at
the right time.

I once hired a stripper and I was amazed at her comfort level with

an admiration of her genuine sincerity. The fact that she was so
comfortable being alone with me gave me a feeling of being -- finally --
an adult. An adult male something I really didn't have until that
point. After she left, I felt liberated. I know it might
sound strange but from that point on I had a great deal more confidence

hot and cold not so much. I was in a rehab ward with 6 other

visit often. we told her to bring 6 friends next time and she
did. they made our 6 month rehab much more bearable.
Also. my p.t. was a 28 year old female who was very nice to all of us
guys. 1 time she took me and 1 other (para) and his date to the
drive in. Afterwards, she suggested we all spend the night at her
trailer. Rick took the couch and she dragged me down the hall and
into her bed. (I was much lighter then.) We spent the night
determining just what worked and how well it did. by morning she
said, I'm taking you back - you're killing me. it was
wonderful to know all was not 'broken'. Since then - 1967 - I got
married to a h.s. sweetheart, had 3 kids the old fashioned way, taught
school, and had a 25 year career with Honeywell as a programmer.
now my job is in India and I fool around on the PC all day trying to
remember which happy hour is on which day, and getting a bigger quad

Glenn,
my normal blood pressure right now is around 90/50. I don't know about the rest
of you, but my blood pressure tends to drop tremendously after I eat. I take a
couple meds before eating to try and combat that from happening. One of them is
Midodrine and the other is fludrocortisone. Sometimes they work, sometimes they
don't. I've been told that if you take too many/combine opiates that can drop
your blood pressure and your breathing can shallow out to a dangerous level.

I have several questions about medications and blood pressure.

Many of the articles that I read on the Internet suggests that quads have a low
blood pressure. What is your experience with blood pressure? Many of the
articles suggest that if your blood pressure is slightly above normal, EX:
170/100, it's time to think about calling an ambulance.

My doctor has put me on Baclofen. I know that some of you are on this
medication, what do you use it for, any side effects, does it do anything with
your blood pressure?

Does anyone take baclofen and ditropan?

Thanks,

Glenn Henry

RE: [QUAD-L] AD - once is enough

2011-01-13 Thread William Willis

I have had two very serious episodes of AD that resulted in ambulance rides.
The sad and scary part was that nobody at the hospital knew anything about it.
My bp was 180/120 and all they did was keep me for observation for about 5 hrs.
until I calmed down. I truly thought I was going to die. We never found a
direct cause, but our best guess is impacted bowel -- 10 lbs. of poop in a 5
lb. sack. Larry Willis, c-5, 1971

I've called the factory a couple of times in the past. They are

Call their 800 and see for yourself. Then let the rest of us know what
happened.

I am finally doing it! I am finally answering my e-mails from my posting of my
spinal cord injury July 10.

I find that I can not pronounce a simple word, no. I got myself into a few
time-consuming projects and I said to myself today, self, answer your e-mails
before everyone thinks you died and went to heaven.

Okay, a few of you ask for some history.

I live on the banks of the Susquehanna River and spent a lot of my time
fishing, hunting and swimming in the river. The weather prior to July 10, 1966
was very hot and we had a storm on Thursday. My mother did not feel safe with
me boating in the river as it was possible to hit a submerged log or other
debris. Instead she said that we could go to the local public pool, a safe
choice. That was a decision that she had to live with for the rest of her life.

Someone jumped on my back as I was swimming, the lifeguard's girlfriend who was
sitting on the lifeguard stand because her boyfriend went home. She was as
qualified as my dog.

Two teenagers that just completed a Red Cross course pulled me out. I was not
breathing and for all intents and purposes, dead.

They rolled me around on the concrete, beat the back of my neck to clear my
airway, my partial denture dislodged and I started to breathe.

Fast-forward to 1969, I had spent the last 2 1/2 years in a state hospital for
crippled children. Due to the fact we could not prove what happened at the
pool, we received $7,500 settlement and my hospital bill was paid. Of course
there was no charge for the state institution that I was a resident for 2 1/2
years.

In the 1960s there was no regiment of treatment for spinal cord injury. The
only thing positive that came out of the Vietnam War was that the government
put gobs of money into the paralyzed vets.

My parents finally had enough of their bull and sign me out of the hospital
December 1969. The charge nurse took my father aside, told him to take me
home, buying me a television, and wait for me to die.

She is now dead, I have gone through 12 or more televisions, and I'm not
finished yet. Do I buy a 32 inch, 37 inch, or 42 inch flat screen TV? My, my,
I hate to make such big decisions.

Soon after I came home I started selling homemade fishing lures from my parents
garage. I expanded somewhat into other fishing and hunting equipment. In
ninth grade, one year before my injury, I took electronics 101 and loved it. I
got caught up in the CB radio craze, started tinkering and soon knew what I
wanted to do. I tried to get a grant from vocational rehabilitation for a home
correspondence course, but no go. Their opinion was I could not physically
work on equipment. I took the money that I made selling hunting and fishing
equipment along with money people would send me in cards and started to take a
home correspondence course. After I was three quarters of the way through it,
they realized I was serious.

In 1973 I received my associate degree in electronics. The CB radio craze was
still escalating and I took over my parents garage and devoted it entirely to
CB radios. I hired a part time student to help work on CB radios and with in
18 months had two full-time technicians. The room was getting quite cramped.

In 1975 I purchased a building lot across the street and built, with the help
of my father and brother, a ranch-style building that I used entirely for
electronics. From CB radios I branched into other consumer electronics and
into the commercial radio field.

In 1981 I married, instant father of three children, and life went on. My wife
was an executive secretary and was able to quit her job and work in the
business around 1985. With in the next two years our advertising of fire
equipment service was in two national magazines as well as a magazine targeted
at Pennsylvania. We sent semiannual mailers to fire departments in 13 states.
I had a niche, firemen want their equipment repaired yesterday, so our
advertising and our service focused on three to five days turnaround unless
repaired parts were needed.

In the early 1990s my wife needed a hip replacement, a fairly common procedure,
but the surgeon was going through a divorce and drinking heavily and taking
drugs. He did everything wrong he could do wrong. The two follow-up surgeries
to try and correct his mistakes ended with my wife having a stroke during
recovery because no one was monitoring the oxygen

I thought 27 years post was long, you guys have real longevity. My body started
to break down about 20 years post. I had to start pain meds and daily
antibiotics. 3 main areas of break downs.

1. My UTI’s got so frequent they wanted to do a bladder augmentation, but tried
a daily antibiotic first. It’s worked pretty good.

2. My b-program seems to be slowing down. Probably from the pain meds. But I
did one of those “Drink Barium Tests” and had some x-rays. One of the diagnoses
was “Thickening of the rectum walls”. My guess is it’s from doing so many
b-programs with “Bullets”, etc. I think this is the most stressful part of my
routine. I sweat so bad while doing it and need more and more and longer
dig-stims. It’s just getting harder and harder on me to do it. If it gets much
worse I’m going to have to look at other options… like… Just “Bagging It”.

3. Then my biggest break down I think are my hips. An injury caused Heterotopic
Ossification. Excess bone growth, where bone starts to grow into the muscles.
Very painful. They can cut it out, but that can cause it to come back even
worse. I went 20 plus years with no spasms and no pain meds. Now, without pain
meds I spasm so bad it makes me grunt. My chest and abdomen constrict so bad it
feels like someone is standing on my chest. If I recline it’s bad enough it is
hard to breath.

How are you other long termers?

Greg

Good Morning, I am trying to figure out if my

in the hospital because his blood pressure spiked, and I know it was from a
kinked hose into his cathetor. So I am always checking

What I am wondering is that my husband breaks out
in sweats around his shoulders and head, but then will have goose bumps going
down his forearms. But his blood pressure is never elevated. Can he
have AD without the blood pressure elevation? He gets so many of the
symptons except that.

Thanks for your help.

There are still those in Kentucky without power and may still be without power
for 10 days.
That has to have a nasty effect on those in powered wheelchair and others who
are home

facing 20+ degrees
as utility workers are working around the clock in their attempt to restore
7000 lines that need
replacement. I know here when it happen, there were people that risks their
lives in trying to salvage
anything they saw laying on the ground and considered it junk, scrap and
salvaged wire. This requires
new line which needs to be ordered, shipped to site before installation. This
takes more time, while it affect those without power. I truly hope that is not

I think you'll be ok now that your cushion is properly inflated. I had a sore
that I got in rehab over the summer heal while sitting on my roho after they
got me on an air mattress at night. Its the other sore that got infected and
lead to another surgery in almost the same place as the sore I got fixed last
year.

When I met with the wheelchair dealer for a new chair, he said that he has seen
people heal on a roho cushion. As long as it has the proper amount of air in
it and pressure relief is being done.

Speaking of pressure relief, since I got this surgery fusing my back even more,

HI - All, I need help with a new pressure sore issue my roho got a bit
low but i could not tell and now i got a small pressure sore on my left side of
my bottom. My wife said it looks sort of like a purple colored bruisecan
you guys tell me the best things to put on one early---when it has not even
opened up??? is lantaseptic or bag balm good for it ?? i'm real worried because
last april, i got a blister on my heel from my wife buying a pair of tennis
shoes one size too small---that turned into a pressure sore and now 7 months
later it is still slightly discolored and i still only wear sandal type shoe to
keep all pressure off that area. So besides the last shoe incidentthis is
my 1st time with a butt area pressure sore---i know to do pressure release and
stay off as much as possible-- but not sure what to put on it in the early
stages. thanks for any help !

When I used granulex in the past, it was applied only to flesh that needed to
be removed. It eats both good and bad flesh so you have to be very careful with
appication.

I don't believe that, but they may be refusing to send the stuff to homes
because I've seen nurses ruin $400 tubes of it just opening it. It is so easy
to contaminate that most doctors don't even bother ordering it. I watched a
nurse open a tube, set the top down wrong side up, then put the regranex on a
non-sterile glove and proceed to waste a weeks worth before knocking the cap on
the floor and declaring the five second rule. And this woman taught nursing.
Needless to say, the wound became badly infected by the next day. They make
regranex, but do you think you can prove that it will be used without
contaminating it. (Insurance companies control what we get these days and they
insist you can't use it so it isn't on my formulary anymore, either.)I can't,
and I like my aids, but they do not understand sterile technique. I feel bad
for you guys and gals with indwelling caths because that's another contributing
factor to your UTI'S.I sure wish you the best with the spray stuff. I've never
understood how it is meant to work, but it doesn't make the wound worse. john

I have chosen not to think too much about the anniversary of my accident, but I
have decided to embrace the first time I was able to breathe for 24 hours
without any ventilator assistance.
I was shooting for my birthday, August 4, but I managed to breathe on my own
for the entire day on August 6 (today) 13 years ago. In fact, I have only been
put on a ventilator once since then to aid me in getting out secretions. Well,
I do stuck on the end of a ventilator hose daily in order to get some
medication into my lungs, but I didn't start doing that until February 2007.
I had planned on doing something today, but that didn't work out. Tomorrow I
will definitely doing something worthwhile.-- QuadiusC2-3 incomplete13 years

I hope by now you've looked at www.roadrunnermobility.com and made arrangements
with them. Be that as it may. You can't imagine the legal ramifications these
days with DME working on wheelchairs not sold by them. The other side is being
reimbursed by CMS for equipment not paid for by CMS. It is such a major
business headache that most DME, 'just say no.'

Since Invacare purchased RoadRunner Mobility in Janurary of this year, most of
the field service is being done by them in North America. This might be
another issue with the local DME as Invacare pays Road Runner less money than
they did the DME for service work done for the provider.

You and so many others may find yourself between a rock and a hard spot because
of this. Hence it is always wise to develop friendships with local DME's
before you need them and not during an emergency.

I was thinking of a cool way to give rides to those people who go places with
us in chairs.
Something like a 12 x 12 inch metal plate on the back of our chairs. It could
flip down and have castor wheels on it.
So people could stand on it while we drive, then they could hop off and it
would pop back up.
It would be like a flat wagon. It could be used to carry lots of other stuff

Just thought it would be easy to make and lots of fun…

FW: [QUAD-L] Breathing Attacks

2008-06-18 Thread William Willis

I take xanax instead of valium. It seems to work better for me. It doesn't give
as much hangover.

Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2008 12:01:47 -0700From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Re: [QUAD-L]
Breathing AttacksTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; quad-list@eskimo.com

If you tell your doctor you are taking overdoses of Tylenol they start getting
the point. I've taken 40mg of Valium for 32 years. I'm addicted. Does it make
any difference? If you want to stop taking it you will need to cut it back
gradually while replacing it. I can promise you Zoloft won't do didly sqwat for
spasms let alone seizures. What is difficult for them to grasp is that even
though you don't feel the pain as before, your body does. When your autonomic
nervous system overloads from all the nerve impulses your autonomic nervous
system starts to malfunction. This leads to super high blood pressure and
eventually heart and kidney damage and failure. Even blood sugar goes awry so
obviously, the pancreas is not functioning during these events.I've had to tell
doctors if they want to experiment, they can get guinea pigs elsewhere. If he
won't give you common medications that you need to deal with your situation,
maybe he can recommend a doctor that will. The cause of anxiety attacks in most
quads is from the uncontrolled glands that spew hormones into your system. Even
knowing that your having anxiety for no real reason doesn't stop it. Valium and
Baclophen will bring the attacks under control. When the attack affects your
breathing, your muscles tense and start convulsing, your blood pressure is
raising and your heart is going to start doing its own sprints. This is the
beginning of a seizure that most quads refer to as AD or Autonomic Dysreflexia.
You should have a pill on hand that controlls your blood pressure for these
events. If it is caused by your urine not flowing, then get it fixed
immediately. If it is from your bowel being full, empty it. If it is from pain,
take painkillers. These are the 3 P's, pee, poo and pain. These are what
normally set off the AD even though it all begins with you feeling nervous and
sensative, or ANXIOUS.I know you are in OZ and doctors there like to discover
new ways to treat old ailments, but I really think your doctor should address
the roots of your anxiety. Not the anxiety because it is merely letting you
know something is wrong. Killing the messenger is probably not going to resolve
this issue.Regardless of what you are addicted to, does it improve your life?
Getting you off addictive drugs is an experiment in futility if it only leaves
you miserable and closer to death.I sure wish you the best of luck. john

Rather than to think of a drug to lower anxiety breathlessness, is there a drug
you normally take which you have stopped taking? I have been cutting back on

[QUAD-L] Continuous pressure sore problems...
I have a problem and I'm hoping somebody on the list can help me with. I have
had problems with pressure sores since my injury 13 years ago. They never get
really bad, mostly just to the blister stage but they are constant. The area
where I get the sores all the time is always purple, I have asked doctors,
nurses and people in the support groups that I attend an apparently I am the
only one with a purple butt. Until recently I could lay on my side for a
couple of days and they would go way. It seems like now whenever I lay on my
side all I do is sweat. The more I sweat the more I want to cover myself up
and the more I cover myself up the more I sweat. If I have somebody put the
warm blow dryer on me it helps but only until they stop. I would love to hear
what kind of mattress and what you guys do or don't do to prevent constant
pressure sores? I have an SP tube so that also hinders lying on my side because
my knee is always bent and it looks like it's pushing the tube.

Hi Tod,

It's good to see the Teach (as Breezy would say) posting on the Q-List again.
I have used all three kinds of catheters, and have found that my body will
immediately reject a Teflon catheter. The latex ones will work, but they don't
last long before I need to change them. The silicone coated latex ones work
best for me too, in my experience.

there are excessive amounts of calcification on the end of the catheter when it

Larry, I just had this talk with my doc. Iron needs a very acidic stomach to
be absorbed and even then, at best, from a 50mg tab you'll get 2-3mg! If
you take antacids, proton pump inhibiters, H2-blockers (like Prevacid,
Prilosec, Zantac , etc.) you'll get almost nothing ... if at all. Iron
absorbs through the stomach but not in the intestines. However, if yo take
iron WITH a Vitamin C there's a chance of enough stomach acid long enough to
absorb it. The IVs are effective with or without stomach acid. It's a
half-hour or 1hr infusion that last up to 3 months. That's the best I can
tell ya. Hope it helps. The vitamin C + ion brought me up from slightly
anemic to normal. Best, --Tod William Willis [EMAIL

I've been taking iron pills for about two months. My friend's doc told him last
week that iron pills were a waste of time and gave him injections. Anybody know
the facts on this? Larry

I sometimes feel like a rolling pharmacy. Daily regimem: 2 oxycontin 20's, 2
percocet, 2 ditropan, 4 reglan, and an assortment of vitamins. Abdominal spasms
are killing me at night and I can't find the cause.

I am so sorry John I will pray for you. I can see you're so uncomfortable as a
result of your injury that was not your fault of the hospital's. I wish your
chair with comfortable for you. You have trouble sleeping just like I do. It
seems like a lot of us do I guess it is the quad thing, just like getting
really cold when we get in bed.
I hope the new sleeping medication my sleep doctor was talking about that is
not on the market yet will be more of a benefit for us, I don't know anything
about it. I'm going to ask more about it the next time I go.they want me to
buy a light to turn on to get my rhythm normalized. Have you ever heard of and
do you think it works? They are about $100 I think she just gave me some more
information as I lost another, they really want me to buy one. I don't want to
spend the money if it does not work. They think I'm affected by not having
some light causing me not to sleep.

bodily immune systems, etc that is worrisome.

The media love to have The sy is falling topics. MRSA has been in and out of

We do not watch Dr. Phil anymore. Haven't for two years. Prior to that he had
a great show going on but then he turned sensationalistic. And there are
commercials every six minutes.

BUT I remembered getting a notice from his website and that THAT topic (MRSA)
would be covered with individuals with first-hand experience. Dr. Phil said
that he did not want to sensationalize it but he did not want to trivialize it
either. In our opinion... he did sensationalize it.

But, besides that and for those who did not watch it ... MRSA is 85% of
hospital acquired (I added the 5%) and 15% community acquired. Which is
exactly why I stay out of hospitals!
Further, we really don't think the blonde girl was diagnosed correctly. MRSA
makes you terribly, terribly sick or kills you with any few days. She probably
DOES have some sort of infection going but we highly doubt that it is MRSA.
She certainly would not be looking that well or going for so long without being
horribly sick.
Just our humble opinion. But acquiring methicillin-resistant staph aureus is
pretty much a death sentence. But we and/or the doctors have done that to
ourselves over the last xx number of years.

Keeping everything as clean as possible? Bleach will kill just about anything
and that is why I have turned to using that for the last 20 years or so. There
is not a product out there that will kill like bleach does. Companies like to
(LOVE TO) advertise that their product is a super safeguard but, hey, it makes
them a buck.

Lots of people say they have had it or are carriers. The reason it is called
methiline-resistant is because it is resistant to ALL antibiotics. And that is
also why it is called the superbug. If someone was told that they had MRSA and
was given an antibiotic and it took care of it... it had to be an infection of
another sort. MRSA is resistant to all the antibiotics on the market today.
That is WHY it is such a huge concern.
But if a lay person is unable to read their own lab reports, etc. (which is
most people)... doctors can tell their patients anything and most of the time
people believe them.
Truthfully... I don't think doctors want to start a panic so that is why they
tell patients what they do. Or they are required by law to say this or that
not to start a panic.

[QUAD-L] mrsa final two

2008-04-06 Thread William Willis

MRSA is by no means a death sentence. As I said, it has many strands that vary
in resistance and virulance. The one SUPER BUG that defies everything hasn't
come along yet (If it has, it is very rare). Scientists tremble to think of
that possibility. It could resemble the 1918 flu epidemic or the plague of the
middle ages. Check out the book Hot Zone or the movie I Am Legend. The movie is
about a cancer cure that mutated and wiped out everybody. Pretty scary stuff.
Well, 'nuff said on that topic.

MRSA will show up in blood cultures or when a sore is cultured. The doctor
should always do a culture/sensitivity test to determine which antibiotic would
best kill the infection.

Here's something else you should know: Methicillin: A semisynthetic
penicillin-related antibiotic, also known as Staphcillin, that once was
effective against staphylococci (staph) resistant to penicillin because they
produce the enzyme penicillinase. Rarely used now, methicillin has been largely
superceded by Vancomycin. Over the past 50 years, staph bacteria have become
resistant to various antibiotics, including the commonly used
penicillin-related antibiotics, including methicillin. These resistant bacteria
are called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

There are other antibiotics that can kill a non-MRSA infection like Keflex,
Keflon (the IV form of Keflex) and Cipro.

No problem! I agree with what Tod said, I would be firmer about getting on an
antibiotic that treats this superbug. Tod mentioned the ones that treat it the
best. I took Bactrim the one that started with an R. I am allergic to
Bactrim (sulfa) and get the itchies, so only managed to stay on the
prescription for like 11 days, then couldn't tolerate any more, but stayed on
the other antibiotic longer and it cleared up the spots. I'm not sure if they
give vancomycin orally or if it has to be just through IV. These sores, if it
for sure is MRSA, have the potential to spread and get worse and get into your
bloodstream and people have died from it. So I don't think it's something that
should be treated so lightly by your doctors. I felt the nurse practitioner,
who finally treated mine, after my physiatrist intervened, was too laid-back
about it as well. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Merrill,I got MRSA from a family member who had the same pimple looking,
circular sores. Mine developed in my inner thigh area also and was untreated
for a month because at first we were not sure what they were, thinking they
were ingrown hairs (from shaving) or pimples, but they got worse and spread.
My family member who was the person I believe gave it to me, hers was under her
armpit and later on her stomach and much bigger than mine and the doctor never
diagnosed her with MRSA, just called it a bacterial staff infection. It was
only after I got it and was properly diagnosed, luckily by my home care nurse
that comes in once a month, that we realized hers was the same thing I had. I
was first treated with the wrong antibiotic, although it was healing it a
little, but then I was put on the right antibiotics and they cleared right up.
They left scars for a while, but those are finally fading too. It's a scary
thing to know you've had it and I'm sure I'm a carrier for it now also. In
fact, my 2-year-old daughter also got one of the bumps on her butt area that
would not heal and got bigger and took her to the doctor and was told it was
MRSA and she was put on antibiotics (sulfa) and it healed. And it very much
worries me that my daughter has had it with how young she is and hearing that
kids have died from it. Fortunately, she's healed very well with the
antibiotics. We are much more careful with cleanliness even more so than we
were before. Hopefully, they will keep coming up with better antibiotics to
fight this superbug!

wheelchair at work. She works for HCA in Nashville and has had to fight
tooth-and-nail for worker's comp. The irony is she is a nurse yet didn't get
help until the infection was advanced. She thought she was invincible - but has
certainly learned differently.
On a different note, my great aunt died yesterday. She was 98 and still sharp

My doctors refuse to treat my MRSA. I have the sore which they monitor but
still believe I am better left not treated. What do you think?

The sore is managed ONLY by keeping in bed treating the sore on my inner thigh
as a heat rash which it is not. My healthcare is VA, think I should just watch
the sore grow or treat the MRSA?

FW: [QUAD-L] Finally, Introducing Myself to the List

2008-03-31 Thread William Willis

Hey Tod, it's great to have you back. You may remember me as the other teacher
on the list (English, psychology). It sounds like you have had an interesting
absence, to say the least. Hang tough, my friend. More later. Larry Willis
Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2008 11:42:41 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To:
quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: [QUAD-L] Finally, Introducing Myself to the
List Hi There Fellow Q's (Ok... It's a Star Trek reference for any
non-Trekkies here.) But don't worry, I'm not here for Star Trek related talk
(though I wouldn't ignore nor dismiss any should it occur *grin*). I suppose
I can consider myself a former old timer on this list from several years ago.
Haven't been on the List in maybe 5 years or so. Primarily because I've been
busy with work and work-related, disability legal crap (on the down side) and
participating in some of my favorite volunteer works (on the upside).
However, though I haven't been here a long time, in looking at the archives, I
do recognize quite a few old-timers from my past... wheelchair, DAANOO, Lori
M., GHenry1, Eric Rudd, Bobbie among several others. For those who don't
know me, I'm a 41-year-old, C5/6 since 1983. I fell from a tree after doing a
teenaged high wire act for a $10 bet. I won the bet because I walked across a
30-ft wire... it's just that the that didn't include successfully making it out
of the tree at the other end! Yes, life can sure sometimes be an irony. I
grew up in eastern Pennsylvania just an hour or two north of Philadelphia
(between Houston and Allentown for those who know PA) in what was a pretty
small town, Nazareth. Accessibility was pretty much nonexistent... plus it was
before the ADA (not that the the ADA has made a huge difference in ALL places!
[Especially small towns]). I always have a good time in college bars when
people asked where I'm from... Nazareth, ... Where's that? ... Near
Bethlehem. ... Where's Bethlehem? ... Me, You're kidding, haven't you ever
read a Bible? It's near Egypt. (All true! At least as far as PA geography
goes. But it sure does trip out half-drunk bar hoppers!) So, that gives you
some idea of my sense of humor. Beyond that, I'm also a huge advocate for the
disabled when it comes to employers and businesses that don't follow the ADA
even after 18 years of being law. (Including my own employer... not necessarily
a good thing for making friends when asking nicely has no results.) Once
upon a time I found this list to be extremely informative. It's why I began
calling the group here fellow Q's. I imagine there is been many changes on
the list but I'm also willing to bet the aspect of being a list full of
knowledgeable people eager to give advice as well as being open to receive it
qualifies this collective as being knowledgeable enough to be nearly
Q-like. I'm very happy to see some of my old friends are still here (BTW:
any old-timers seen or heard from breezy lately?). I'm equally happy to see
there appears to be many new people here that I might be able to call my NEW
friends, as well. Being a quad for 25 years has provided me plenty of
knowledge on several topics and up happy to share whatever I can to help any
new quads... or old quads with new questions. Currently I've got plenty of
problems I'm dealing with myself. I had a flap surgery in 2006 for a sore that
was open 4.5 months. During the surgery he was found a small amount of
osteomyelitis from MRSA had formed in my ishium. Within a year the surgical
site RE-opened, I showed outward signs of some kind of infection, and it was
found the osteo might not have been eliminated. I had to have another
surgery to explore an unusual area seen in a CAT scan. The surgery's result was
somewhere between negative and inconclusive for MRSA. Two months later, major
disturbing signs of infection returned (swelling, fever, and pain indicated by
dysreflexia). If I didn't have MRSA then, the surgery to find it and the
open surgical site provided a perfect pathway for the staph to really hit me. A
MRSA infection in the exposed tissue with directly to my hip bone and begin
disintegrating the hip and femur so much that I ended up with a dislocated hip
(causing the pain) because it wasn't enough stable bone to hold my femur
properly in the hip socket. All this while I was in bed recovering from
surgery. Since then I began hyperbaric oxygen treatments (HBOT). For anyone
unfamiliar, HBOT entails being placed in a tube that is sealed and pumped
full of 100% oxygen at 2X normal atmospheric pressure for 2 hours every day...
usually for a minimum of 60 days. HBOT activates certain bone cells that
eliminate dead bone and activates other cells that rebuild new bone in its
place because the hyper-oxygenated atmosphere makes the body produce more blood
vessels into dead areas. So far, I can report, so good. I'm finally
beginning to sit again in my WC for the first time since the end of August,
'07! I consider

pain meds don't help much. I have figured out this week that eating too much
seems to make it worse. I ate a taco salad for supper last night and woke up at
7 with abdominal spasms that are just now starting to ease, 10 am. My stomach
hurts and I feel like a train wreck. Just another wonderful day in quad-city.

When I was having AD during my bow routine, I was told to take pain medication
before starting and it just relieves pain, but does not control the trigger at
least for me.Dana

Well I just got some info about my close call and I don't know whether to be
worried or not. I didn't have a uti afterall. In fact, they don't have a clue
what caused it. I still feel like manure after 2 weeks. It was obviously severe
AD, but I don't know the trigger.

Glad you're now doing better.

Never exp the bad episodes you described.

I just get the feeling that the back of my skull is ready to explode from AD.

Good luck,

a bomb. Then my wife says I zoned out and literally became a zombie. I thought
I was dying. My wife tried to bring me around with no luck. She called the
ambulance and I was rushed to the hospital. My BP was 180/120, it's usually
95/60. For about two hours I was completely out of it. Tests showed I had - you
guessed it - a UTI. of course. all the other symptoms were AD. I've had the
shakes and cold sweats many times before, but I have never experienced anything
like this. I thought my time had come. The doc put me on levaquin, ditropan,
and dantrolene. Only today have I begun to feel better. Have any of you guys
experienced this? Larry Willis
