Re: [RBW] Re: Informal poll: Sam Hillborne sizing, 6' tall about an 85PBH?

2018-02-19 Thread John Woo
Thanks Chris for the advice.

I’m guessing that you were straddling a 58cm, which has roughly an 85cm
standover, with 32ish-mm tires.

Although with shoes on, I’d think you’d be able to at least stand over that
bike.

Thanks all for the feedback! Regarding build specs:
 - 58 cm frame. Bought it 2nd hand, but it's mint.
- Shimano 10sp group with Dura Ace Bare ends, and 105 RD & FD. Sugino
crankset, Shimano BB, Ultegra cassette 12-28
- Wheelset is Velocity Dyads laced to Ultegra 6500 hubs, 36 spokes. 32mm
Pasellas (hoping to get some Barlow PAss soon)
- Brooks B17 Honey saddle, Copper Special model, and well aged. Kalloy
seatpost
- Brooks bar tape wrapped on Nitto rando bars and Technomic 80mm stem

Frameset is beautiful. Love the lugs and all the lug details! Have bars
set level with the saddle now and it's a really comfortable setup.

In 2012 I went to Rivendell with the intent of getting a 56cm Sam. I was in San
Francisco for business and was hoping to bring it home with me. Waterford was
making them at the time. I have a 84.75cm PBH and have a 57cm Bleriot, 56cm
Quickbeam, 55cm Appa. I'd also ridden a 56cm Atlantis and 56cm Ram. Kevin was
there and he got the bike ready for me and it didn't fit. I couldn't stand
over the top tube. I went home empty handed. I recently talked to Riv about the
55.5cm Rosco and Grant said it should fit but couldn't explain why the 56cm Sam
didn't. The best guess was it was actually a 58cm. I passed on the Rosco
because I couldn't shake that experience with the Sam. With a 58cm and a PBH of
85, I'd be concerned about stand over height especially with bigger tires. I
think the 55cm would be the safe choice.

Good luck!

2018-02-19 Thread John Bokman
I would go smaller if running drops. I was in between sizes in 2009, got
the larger frame (60cm) and wished I'd gotten the smaller (56) because the
top tube was so long. Even with a short 7 cm stem, it was too long for me,
although standover was adequate. 7 years later, I got a smaller Sam (58cm)
and it's perfect. Mind you, this is for a rider who rides with drop bars
below saddle level. i still prefer the short stem. My legs are long
relative to my torso.

[RBW] Quickbeam Racking

2018-02-19 Thread Deacon Patrick
Nathan, how set are you on a front rack vs. rear? You may want to consider a
light weight rear rack instead. There seems to be a large range of personal
preference, but the QB seems to have geometry that favors a rear load more than
a front load, though I’m no expert at that and haven’t tried a front rack on my
QB as I’m happy with the Mark’s Mini installed on the rear as a bag support. On
my grocery run today, in/ my saddle bag I carried 4 doz. eggs, 2 lbs butter,
and TP plus my minimal carry and it handled brilliantly on my jouncy,
washboarded 5 mile return ride home.

With abandon,
Patrick

2018-02-19 Thread Minh
Nathan,

If you decide to ignore Bills advice (and to be honest if i had read this
before thinking about what you are i may have not gone thru with my
purchase) and try to make it work with the Pauls, I have an M12 and the
requisite Pauls Adaptor Nuts in my parts box. I was thinking of doing this
exact thing, but then i thought thru how i used my QB, and i need/often
carry way more load then would work on an M12.

If the load requirements are ok with you, i've seen this done before
(though not on a QB)

FWIW, i use a Nitto Mini Front + p-clamps, yes the p-clamps are ugly but
they work, and it lets me run the giant nitto platrack.

If you still want to try it, send me a direct message and we can work out a
deal for the M12 + racknuts.

[RBW] Re: CANTI SAM BUILD

2018-02-19 Thread Jon Dukeman,central Colorado
Jonathon,
Thanks for the complement.
I have only ridden the canti Sam twice. Obviously the canti Sam is lighter.
I don't plan on adding any more accessories to the Canti Sam.
I still have the double top tube Sam and it's has everything..front & back
racks, basket ,Fenders, Dyno hub, fr.& rear lights.Much heavier.
The canti Sam is set up exactly like the double top tube as far as
measurements go and seems more responsive. The canti Sam has 44mm tires the
dbl top tube has 38mm.
They both are comfortable to ride.
I'll post more later.
You will love your Sam.It will serve you nicely however you want to set it
up.
If you have questions ask away.
Jon

Cliffhangers are absolutely bomb proof, and if you run a disc brake you won’t

[RBW] Re: Advice on herd thinning (or, scheming to get another bike)

2018-02-19 Thread Sky Coulter
Thanks for the suggestion Rich. I did consider pauls, but I wanted to keep
it a super easy brake setup. Mike Varley had an article about brake
clearances that I cam across (
http://blackmtncycles.com/clearance-pt-ii-road-frames/ ) and from the
images in it, it looked like the shimanos ought to offer adequate clearance
for 35mm tires. The limiting factor will remain the frame bridges and fork
crown, I believe. I think the only way to get fenders on as well will be
to split them at the brakes/bridges. I did something like this once before
and am curious to tinker around with it again.

Really, i should just ride the romulus without fenders, but living in the
metro vancouver area, well, we get quite a lot of rain.

Thank you Bill,
Thank you Garth,
And Thank you Julian,
That's reassuring. And I just read what Peter White had to say (Thank you

necessary for tandem applications. So 40 is overkill, and I'm ok with overkill.
I won't go cheap on the wheels for certainly, and I've got some enthusiastic
wheel pros in the neighborhood. I could save some money buying the prebuilts
from velocity, I only wish they optioned 40 hole dynamo hubs, but is there any
reason not to trust their spoke prepping/initial buildup? Disclosure- I seem to
magically break stuff, so there's that. Hoping a stoker's good luck might rub

[RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh wheels search, a horribly disorganized WTB post.

2018-02-19 Thread Julian Westerhout
With a smaller wheel (650b), wide rim, and big tires you will be fine with
40 hole rear. I agree a good wheel builder is critical.

We (stoker and I) have put thousands of loaded touring miles on our 40 hole
650b Hetre shod Bilenky touring tandem, and are happy as clams with the 36
hole setup on our HHH. For reference -- I'm 6'7", 240 lbs.; stoker is 5'3",
110 lbs.

[RBW] Hubbuhubbuh wheels search, a horribly disorganized WTB post.

2018-02-19 Thread Garth
I agree with Bill . 40 is perfectly fine given a competent build by a dedicated
wheel professional.

My 2 cents: Don't cheap out on wheels in any way, including how they are built,
which is just as important as the components. Do it proper the first time.
Wheel builds are just as important as the frame build.
