Joel,

Sorry for the delay. I have both Berthoud's Aspin and Aravis; the only
difference is the rail material, steel vs titanium. I also have a Rivet
Independence. Important to me is they all have the cutout, which makes a
huge difference in comfort. I also like the narrowness as I have pretty
thick thighs. As for the Rivet, it is a stiffer saddle than the Berthouds,
not quite as comfortable. I wanted to try it and am still deciding whether
to keep it on the bike it inhabits. Good Luck,

Hi,
The Roadini. It is new and better made. X0-1 is more of a collectors item and
the concept is more valuable than the execution.

[RBW] (Large) Sackville Saddlebag without a Rack?

2020-07-13 Thread Max Diener
Hi all, posting this again after I realized the new view in Google groups
was sending my posts into the void. Hopefully switching to old has fixed
the problem!

I am really interested in buying a Sackville Baggabond (their current
large) Saddlebag, but also really would like to run it on a bike with no
rack. I currently have 2 bikes in my quiver--one is a way overloaded,
over-fendered, over-racked cargo bike. The other is my "poor man's
Rivendell", a 1986 Schwinn Cimarron that I am running fully stripped
down--no racks, fenders, etc. It's just a fun cruising bike.

I was drawn to the Sackville bags both for their aesthetic and because (in
theory) they will allow me to keep this a rackless bike, which appeals to
me as the yin to the yang of my overloaded cargo bike. The goal would be
using the Sackville to commute with on fair weather days (13" MacBook Pro,
lunch, light change of clothes), as well as any other misc uses it may have
around town. Also, they look good :)

All of that being said, I have not yet come across anyone running one of
these large bags without a rack. After speaking to Will at RBW, he told me
that he would expect the bag to sag after some time, and so to size down,
as right now I just barely meet the 13" gap between saddle loops and top of
tires. I'm 6'1", 89cm PBH (somewhat shorter legs for my height), riding a
22" frame as they call it in their catalog. I've got a decent chunk of
seatpost showing, but really don't see my saddle moving much higher!

Can anyone give some experience on running these rackless? I'd hoped that
the hard bottom layer would prevent too much sagging, but maybe that's not
the case? If I do need some support for the bag, I'd really love to run
something like a Carradice Bagman support rather than a full blown rack,
but again haven't come across a Large on one in searching posts. Any
experience, thoughts, wisdom, stories, jokes...would be welcome. I want to
make this work!

Last thought--in theory I could go for the HappiSack BUT--they don't have
Olive in stock, which if I'm going to spend over $200 on a bag, I want it
to be my preferred color, AND in the past, I have always regretted not
buying the bigger bag, all else being equal.

Thanks!
Max

[RBW] Re: Reading saddle threads, B17, Berthoud Mente

2020-07-13 Thread Ty Graham
Hi, I bought a Mente from Boulder Bicycle. The transaction was great, the
saddle not so great. I’ve been a b17 and team pro rider. I was replacing a
broken b17 Ti. I picked the Mente since it seemed closest in width to the
b17. I’ve not really been able to get comfortable, though. The shape is
very different. Thinking I’ll try the arrivis.

[RBW] Clem Smith Jr. Low

2020-07-13 Thread Alex K
I’m in the same boat. Waiting on my Clem L which I ordered presale, but not
directly through RBW, but rather through The Psychic Derailleur in INDIANA.
I’ll be mounting a Nitto Campee 34F front rack onto my 52 Clem, with a Wald 157
basket without any of the hardware (making it quite a bit lighter than the 157
with all the hardware.) I personally prefer front-loading my bikes, and I’ll
be able to throw either my Sackville Large ShopSack or my Tunitas 139 basket
bag in there (Tunitas bags, which I love, tend to fit better in baskets larger
than the size which the bags are named after. 139 fits PERFECTLY in my Wald
157.)B67 sounds great, but definitely think black saddles look great with
that Bronzey Green. Thinking about going with a black Cambium C17, myself.
Highly recommend the MKS Allways or Lambda pedals. Allways pedals grip better
in the rain, but can be sharp on the calves! Bosco bars are kinda perfect for
the Clem, but you might take a look at the Nitto Billie bars or the Bosco
Bullmoose (only problem with the Bullmoose is lack of adjustability, but damn
it looks perdy!!) Just some thoughts. Looking forward to Clem pics

[RBW] Clem L wait time and a Riv trivia (RIVIA???) question

2020-07-13 Thread Alex K
Ordered a Clem L on the presale and dang am I itching to ride it. Anybody have
ANY info on when when these steeds will be ready to be mounted? My excitement
has led me to start wondering about the obscurity level of all the Rivendell
frames throughout the history of RBW. How many Clems (L) are out there now?
How many were made available in this pre-sale? How many more rounds of Clems
before they are retired? Same questions for all the other Riv
models/iterations out there? Maybe this topic has been covered before, but new
to this GGroup and loving all the content

The Clems will be arriving towards the end of this month and it will take

[RBW] Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread Ryan M.
I think the bosco bars came after the Hunq, so I don’t believe the bike was
designed for those.

In the Riv video that Jay Richey made that featured the Hunqapillar he was
riding it with albatross bars. I think the bike would also do great with a set
of bullmoose bars.

Re: [RBW] Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread Jay Lonner
I’ve had Boscos (bullmoose and regular) on my Hunq at various times and they
were fine - good, even. (The regular Boscos were a bit flexy though.) But both
varieties resulted in a rising posture that was too upright for me. After some
trial and error I’ve landed on Jones loop h-bars as my hands-down favorites on
that bike. Crust sells a quill stem with a removable faceplate that is just
*chef’s kiss* a perfect match.

[RBW] XO-1 or Roadini

2020-07-13 Thread Zack Medow
RBW Owners Bunch I need your help!

I'm looking to venture into the world of my first Rivendell/Bridgestone.

I'm at an impasse right now. I'm thinking of putting in an order for a
Roadini and set it up with the new Shikoro 38mm tires Riv is carrying. But
there's also a mint condition XO-1 right now on eBay in my size.

I'm going to be using this bike for road and city riding, maybe some very
light grav grav. I have a Jones for a trail bike, so that's not really a
concern. My goal is to find a supple steel bike that fits a wider tire
without resorting to a disc break and the stiff fork that comes with it.

Which one would you go for?? Is this a silly comparison??

[RBW] Re: Reading saddle threads, B17, Berthoud Mente

2020-07-13 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
You can purchase Gilles Berthoud saddles from Rene Herse Cycles, the
Berthoud dealer in the U.S.

The widest models most like the B17 are the Mente, the Aubisque, and the
Vars. The Mente is the economy model without the torx head bolts allowing
you to change leather tops. The Aubisque has steel rails, and the Vars has
titanium rails, and both allow one to change the leather tops or take apart
the saddle to replace parts. Rene Herse now carries the Aubisque.

I ride these saddles because my sit bones are almost 13cm apart, so even
if I'm stretched out, a wider saddle feels better, and I like my Albatross
bars lowered to saddle height. I'm definitely not a fan of the very upright
riding posture, unless I'm stretching & riding hands free. My sit bones
rest a bit too close to the edge to ride comfortably on the Aspin.

I would recommend getting the Aubisque, because it gives you the option
to replace parts, including the leather top, if you ever need to.

But first, I would recommend measuring your sit bones to make sure how
wide a saddle you need. The WTB website has a sit bone "calculator", their
Fit Right System, which I found very easy to use, and accurate (for me at
least), which uses the width of your wrist. I would give it a whirl before
you buy: https://www.wtb.com/pages/fit-right-system

YMMV,

John

[RBW] Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
I was looking at my 2013 Hunqapillar's geometry on the Bike Insights
website, and it described the stack & reach as more aggressive than most
off road touring bikes, and designed for swept back handlebars.

I don't remember Rivendell specifying the Hunqapillar was designed for
swept back bars in it's emails or flyers or website, although I was steered
firmly toward Albatross bars when I bought it.

Does anyone know if indeed the Hunqapillar was designed for Albatross bars
or Bosco bars? The Choco & Billie bars weren't around yet back in 2013.

I looked back through all the old Hunq info I could find, and didn't find
anything written that specified a particular bar was best the the
Hunqapillar.

Slightly puzzled,

John

Re: [RBW] 50cm Atlantis. 650b

2020-07-13 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Joel

Using Bill Lindsay's analysis and assuming 10% of the US population in
within 2H of Springfield MA, your chances of finding a 650B 50cm Atlantis
is less than 1 in 10,000. Suggest you pursue other methods.

Just checked RBW website and using the Bill Lindsay method of stock
determination, they have ten (10) 650B 50cm Atlantis frames in stock.
Perhaps Bill's suggestion of a RBW dealer ordering 1 for you to test makes
sense.

>From previous posts, your major concern is SOH and the RBW's NOT specifying
SOH in the geo charts for the the Atlantis or the JoeyA. You seem torn
between the 2.

I would expect a 50cm Atlantis SOH to be 1cm LOWER than the 51cm JoeyA:
same TTL and tire size, lower BBD, minor HTA/STA differences. A Technomic
stem should give you enough bar height.

Suggest calling RBW and insisting to speak to Grant to help you decide.
You can tell him your concerns of RBW fitting the largest frame, SOH, and
bar height.

great unloaded, go to the store and buy some stuff, load bag, ride home with it
dragging on the tire. You're probably going to need a rack

Roadini. The XO-1 is a fun bike but achieves its low-standover sizing at the

Yes. The Baggabond may be too large for the Erlen and maybe too heavy for
what its designed for. Just a thought.
Back to the stick. It’s kind of an “on the fly” approach. But maybe a
piece of black bamboo and contrasting cord would be more elegant and appear
more purposeful.

Re: [RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread Jay Lonner
The Pass and Stow rack is great - the weak link is the basket and its high
center of gravity. I’ve probably carried 15-20# with no issues, and I wouldn’t
hesitate to carry more than that in lowrider panniers.

I’m glad you noticed the Rat Fink bell. My youngest daughter gave it to me as a
birthday present when she was 6 or so - it has a lot of sentimental value to
me.

[RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jay, can I ask which quill stem you went with for your Jones bars? I see
a 3 different 31.8 quill stems with the removable face plates on the Crust
bikes website: 15 degree & 30 degree Nitto UI stems & the Nitto BJ stem.

I agree about the upright posture with the Bosco's, every bump in the
road seems targeted on my brain, and riding downhill makes me feel like I'm
about to fly over my handlebars. Plus the cockpit is just way too darn
cramped. I had to search for the longest & lowest stem I could find just to
make Albatross bars comfortable, and that's with my butt and saddle all the
way back on a lugged seat post.

I thought remembered trying out the Bullmoose Bosco bars at Riv back in
2013, so I double checked my memory on the Internet Way Back Machine, and
Bosco's, Bullmoose Bosco's, Dove bars & and Albatross bars were all in the
2012 Riv catalog when I ordered my Hunqapillar. I wouldn't trade my Hunq
for anything, but it seems like somewhat of an outlier in Rivendell design
geometries, and was trying to understand why.

Happy but puzzled,

John

Paul,

Wonderful build, my friend.

Atlantis-es been built in Japan by Toyo in the early 2000s and then by
Waterford in the US until a few years ago when Riv offered up a MIT
version. However, I have heard whispers that if you throw down enough cash
that you can still get a MUSA (Made in the USA) Atlantis.

On July 14, 2017 (happy early bday to my Atlantis, I got a Waterford-built
Atlantis right before the change to geometry to longer chainstays and moved
production to Taiwan. After ordering In September of 2016, I waited some
8-10 months because Waterford ran out of the chainstays that used to come
on the previous version and the chain stay maker (true temper) left the
steel market. I don’t know if that led to the change in geo or just was the
final pebble that toppled over the load in helping them reconceptualize the
geometry of the Atlantis.

The long chainstays are wonderful. I enjoy them on my Clem. I am sure you
were enjoy them on your Atlantis.

Best,

[RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread Garth

The Hunqapillar was/is a lower-cost substitute for the Bombadil, which
wasn't designed for any particular bar, the initial prototypes used both
drop bars and moustache bars. Regardless of the frame and it's relative
reach you just can't limit it to any particular bar, not even the designer.
There are infinite body types and preferences. Whoever thought in the late
70's you'd ever see those early mountain bikes being ridden with drop bars
? Who imagined a vintage racing/touring frame being used with swept back
bars ?

So the best bar is whatever works for you. I realize some people want to
be told what to do, and for those there's endless people to tell you, each
with their pet set of relatives/isms/theories/beliefs. Others prefer, if
not must, find out for themselves "what's it all about ?" , what works with
a given frame at any given time. Like a "hunq" of clay for the potter.
Again, such is Infinite, pure creativity, and such is Life !

An old tube under tape is a brilliant idea! Why didn't I think of that? I
just changed my Homer from an Albatros back to drops. I just wrapped them

I like the look and novelty of the cork, but it is not super comfy. There

Regarding the Erlen rack, maybe you can help me understand something. If

to rest on it before that bag would be hitting the seat. How would you fit

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Atlantis

2020-07-13 Thread ☆ Paul ☆
Thanks for the reply and info James.

Yes, the Atlantis is really, really long. I've designed my own frames but
nothing this long, and it's just awesome, I feel like a kid riding a
Stingray. Especially with new rubber fast tires.

The Sam H I built up has similar components (1x10) but had lower Billie
bars and 35c tires. My original idea was the Sam would be a faster bike for
gravel rides (we have a lot of dirt roads in Vermont), and the Atlantis
more of a 100% upright town cruiser. But I just flipped bars (Bosco to
Sam, Billie Bars to Atlantis) and saddles between the bikes and some how
it's better: upright narrow tire Sam H, very dignified, and the Atlantis is
*slightly* more aggressive with fat tires and the Billie Bar.

Also just realized I can slide the brakes and shifter way up the Billie Bar
towards the front of the bike, which gives me a ton of hand positions on
the Atlantis. Going to ride over to the BMX shop if it doesn't thunderstorm
and see if they have some old-fashioned 170mm flangeless grips.

Starting to think I'm going to end up keeping both bikes for a while and
not sell the Sam, at least yet. Bleh. My garage is full!

All this on my lunch hour.

XO

Paul

I think I’ve seen somewhere in their blog that you could use a stick and
strap arrangement to help support the bag. On the other hand, the Erlen

I like my X0-3, but honestly the new bikes are more refined and easier to
size. If I had one I'd keep it but I wouldn't pay collectors prices for
one.

Currently the Sam Hillborne is most like the 93 X0-1 (cantis, max 47mm
tire) and the A Homer Hilsen most like the 92 XO-1 (sidepulls, max ~42mm
tire).

[RBW] Re: My New Atlantis

2020-07-13 Thread ☆ Paul ☆
Hi Doug,

Thanks for your reply.

It's interesting, because a lot of long wheelbase bikes have too much rake
up front, which makes the front feel kind of sloggy. The new Atlantis has a
tight enough rake, just a long rear end, and so it still feels relatively
agile. Very cleverly done.

What is the max tire size on your older Atlantis with fenders? I've seen
those and they look so nice. There's an amazing black one for sale right
now on eBay.

The crank is a New Albion w/ 42T. Actually, it comes stock as a 42/33 but
I just took off the small chainring. It's great because it has a bash guard
built in (you have to flip the guard around if you want to run it as a 1x
to give more clearance) and also because it's really a Sugino crank (comes
out of the same mold as the XD2 I think). If you use a 36/12 cassette as a
1x9 or 1x10 you're pretty much dialed unless you're really mountain biking
crazy rough terrain. You can get it from Soma.

Re: [RBW] Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-13 Thread Ray Varella
That’s a bummer.

Most hardware stores sell foam pipe covers designed for insulating water pipes.
They are split along their length.
I use them whenever I ship a bike or frame.
They can be used many times over and are easily secured with zip ties.
Bubble wrap is another option.
It might be worth putting a kit together since you transport your bikes often
enough.

[RBW] Re: Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-13 Thread George Schick
Couple of tips for traveling with bikes on racks:

1) Wrap the upper and lower headset bearings with something like Saran
Wrap. This keeps the grease from being blown out of the headset while
traveling at highway speeds.

2) After you've mounted the bikes on the rack where you want them, move 'em
back and forth to see how they interact with each other. Where there is
contact, insulate those areas with something like the soft foam stuff you
find in packages of fruit, etc. Then use some string - cheap stuff like
binder twine (this should be familiar to someone who grew up on a farm)
that you can discard - to hold them in place.

3) Never mind how wonderful the maker of a saddle cover says his product
is, put something like a thin plastic grocery sack (making sure it has no
holes!) over the saddle first, then the cover. It may not look so great
that way, but it'll go a long way to better ensure that your saddles will
arrive dry.

4) You may need some bungie cords of different lengths to lash the bikes
together to keep things from moving. The front wheels, for example, like
to flop back and forth at highway speeds, wreaking all sorts of havoc.

Sorry about the damage. We wish you would have asked us first :-(

[RBW] Re: My New Atlantis

2020-07-13 Thread ☆ Paul ☆
Hi Joel.

It's a 53cm, actually.

I'm 5' 11" with a 34-ish PBH (longer torso). Fits me really well.

I suppose the next size up would have worked as well, I'd just have to have
used a shorter stem and you'd see less seatpost... but I wanted 650B wheels
— I dislike fat tires on 29'er wheels, too hard to get moving at a
stoplight. 

That's a 120mm long nitto stem on there right now!

Re: [RBW] Re: (Large) Sackville Saddlebag without a Rack?

2020-07-13 Thread Patrick Moore
More about the Carradice SQR system: I works well to hold regular (and not
just the purpose-designed Super C Slim) transverse saddlebags higher than
the rear of the saddle (tho' your have to be aware that you'll need to lift
your leg higher when you swing it over the saddle, in case that is a
problem). I'd guess you get up to 3" of additional lift over the tire
compared to strapping it to Brooks slots -- note of course that the
bag-holding device is far more vertical than that built in to the Super C
Slim. I've used it with the Camper and the Nelson and the Junior to hold
the top of the bag above the rear of the saddle. However, I'm not sure if
it works well with the flatter, more horizontal Rivendell design. Perhaps
others can address this?

[RBW] Re: My New Atlantis

2020-07-13 Thread dougP
Paul:

Great to hear you're enjoying your ride. The current Atlantis is the most
comfortable one yet.

Short history: Toyo built the Atlantis for a long time, and while it was
updated a bit here'n'there, it was mostly things like adding braze-ons &
minor running changes. A few years ago (I'm a bit vague on exactly when)
production moved to Waterford. At that point, the chainstays got just a
bit longer. Not so much as to be obvious but for a while there was a geo
chart for that version & the differences were subtle. The MIT version was
a major change to significantly longer chainstays.

I have an '03 58 cm Atlantis that I simply love, and have put thousands of
miles on in the last 17 years. A couple of years ago, I was at RBWHQ and
took a ride on the current (MIT) version and was simply amazed. The ride
was noticeably more cushy. We did some trails close to the shop and the
bike handled as well as mine on single track (Note: I'm not an aggressive
off-roader). You've really got the best of both worlds. Another benefit
to the longer wheelbase is if you run rear panniers more of the weight is
forward of the rear axle for a more stable ride. I also think that space
between the seat tube and the rear wheel just begs for a frame bag.

I toyed with the idea of upgrading to the new design, but felt guilty about
abandoning an old friend who has serve me so well.

[RBW] Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-13 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Every year I point the van north and drive from Vegas to small town North
Dakota, and the lakes country of Minnesota. And every year I drag 3-4 bikes
along with us on a Saris rack. I’ve gone through several different bikes in
the past several years (the kids are growing, I switched to That Clem Life,
etc) so I’ve never found an exact formula to make the bikes fit perfectly.
This year I hauled my new ln 52 cm Clementine (2019 geo), the
old 1st gen 52 cm blue Clem H, #theClemRider’s little 45 cm 2018 Clem H,
and Baby Bear’s 24 inch Specialized Hot Rock.

I never regret bringing my bikes, but I do admit I lament that they come
back to Vegas in poorer condition than when they left. We always get caught
in a rainstorm at some point, and usually more than once. After that I
always notice creaking where there hadn’t been, rust on the heads of bolts
or inside the braze-ons. I usually have new scuffs from the bikes knocking
together on the rack, dirt and grit where I hadn’t had it before. One year
I drove to a shooting range on 20 miles’ worth of gravel roads and the
bikes were completely trashed at a level you can’t fathom. The Betty Foy
(now sold) had a permanent ugly mark on the top tube where the arm bar of
the rack had mashed the cable into the paint.

You would think I would learn and get this dialed in but I never really do.
This year was really something - when was the last time you tried to get 3
Rivendells with Bosco bars on a rack? Boscos don’t play nicely. Three of 4
of the bikes had baskets, and all 4 had racks. Yeah, nightmare.

So, this vacation I have discovered new ways to damage my bikes. I’ll
provide the photos and explanations in the next post...

[RBW] Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-13 Thread True Golden
I bought a Rivendell Road back in 1999.
I wish I still had it.
Around a year later I lamented to Grant it had slipped while leaning on the
corner of my house and slipped down said corner leaving an inch or so scrape on
the top tube.
He responded something to the effect,'He considered putting a scratch on each
frame b4 shipping so people wouldn't obsess about a scrape on a new bike, that
they are meant to be ridden and beausage happens.'
That is not a quote but you get the gist of it.
That said,  it still bummed me for a while.
About 12 years ago I had a friend and co-worker that had a Riv inspired Heron
in pristine shape he kept in his house.
His cat knocked over something on a shelf that fell on his Heron scraping it.
He wasted no time getting a local bike builder to restore it like new.
In the grand scheme it was minor as a genetic heart issue ended his life around
age 60.
My advice , polish up what you can , dont sweat the small stuff and enjoy each
ride.
Those pipe wraps are a great idea.
Also if overnighting at a motel,  camp ground etc, I would have multiple locks
on the bikes or carry them inside which you probably do.
God's protection to you and your family for safe travels and safe riding.
Paul in Dallas

I like watching my mountain bikes get marks due to wear. But hated to see them
get bang up because of mishandling them. Grind a layer of paint off the chain
stays from a muddy ride - cool. Drop the bike for no reason and band up a grip

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Atlantis

2020-07-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Joel: I guess you meant to say that you don't like 29" tires? Excuse if I
misread.

Here's what I've found after comparing the very light, very short,
24.8"-tall, ~28 mm wide, Elk Pass-shod wheels on my 26" wheel road bikes
with the 29.6"-tall, 60 mm-wide tires on my dirt road bike: at least with
very light Velocity Blunt SS rims and very, *very* light Schwalbe Big Ones,
there is surprisingly less difference than you might expect when
accelerating from a standstill; and note: I don't gear down at stops; I
stand and torque.

Patrick Moore, who has more than once before figured he could just fit a
26" wheel Atlantis -- by preference! -- in ABQ, NM.

2020-07-13 Thread dougP
Paul:

BTW, the 1 x 10 is not unusual. If it does what you need done, it's right
for you. Long ago, Grant said something to the effect that a bike frame
was just a place to hang all the parts you need for what you want to do
with your bike. I doubt there are too many Rivendells out there that are
duplicates.

What chainguard are you using? It gives the bike a nice, clean look.

[RBW] Re: (Large) Sackville Saddlebag without a Rack?

2020-07-13 Thread Max Diener
Thanks for all of the replies here; this is a very helpful community.

I tend to agree the Nitto rack could make a great solution--I just don't
know that I'm trying to spend that kind of money right now!

Now I find myself in a pickle because I could have sworn that I measured
13" between top of tire and saddle loops when I was last with my bike, but
I'm currently on an somewhat extended vacation to in laws and can't confirm
because the bike in question is not with me. Something about the 13" number
was nagging at me, so I started to do some napkin math:

I am (about to) run Rat Trap Pass tires, which I read have an outer
diameter when inflated of 67.5cm, so let's round that up to 68cm, and the
frame has virtually zero BB drop. If I take half of that value, 34cm, as
the starting height for my crank center and use RBW's Saddle Height of 78cm
(with their formula based on my PBH of 89cm--which I think is close to how
my bike is set up), I land at the saddle being roughly 112cm over the
ground. This would give me a gap between seat loops (112cm) and tire (68cm)
of 44cm, or 17in...much more substantial than I originally was remembering.

Anyone care to poke a hole in that math? I feel like a crazy person writing
that all out.

[RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread Ryan M.
I remember the Bomba being marketed pretty heavily with the old style
mustache bars, which I'm sure would work great on a Hunq frame too.

I was very close to buying both a Bomba and a Hunq at different times and
did a bunch of research about those frames (I still think the Hunqapillar
headbadge is the best headbage) and the handlebar I always thought I would
stick on it would be the Bullmoose bars. I never did pony up the cashola to
get one of those frames and instead wound up now with an Appaloosa with a
Bullmoose bar. Lol.

[RBW] More on the Chauncey Matthews replacement for the 2003 Curt Goodrich Riv Road

2020-07-13 Thread Patrick Moore
I picked up the new fixed gear wheel Saturday and rode it today; first
fixed ride on this frame, same 70" gear as before. The new frame seems to
make it easier to climb seated while torquing hard-ish-ly at relatively
low-ish cadences.

New bike, same parts and wheels: 24.98 lb with AM hub and single 18 t cog
and shifting cable assembly; 23.9 lb with Surly fixed wheel with 17/19
Dingle and 18 t Shimano fw on flip side. Same build otherwise. Basically a
lb lighter than the 2003 Curt. It's not the lb that counts, it's that the
tubing seems to hold me back less.

[RBW] Re: (Large) Sackville Saddlebag without a Rack?

2020-07-13 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
If you'd settle for the previous generation large SaddleSack, in Olive (!),
I have a barely used one. I don't commute anymore and have a grocery store
in sight of my house. If I go to Trader Joe's, I use a medium Saddle Sack
(thanks to Joe!) and pannier(s) if need be.
Let me know if you are interested! (And, note that you get two more pockets
AND a detachable pouch than with the current model.)

You probably don't want to combine a Sackville of either generation or
size, with the Carradice supports. The deeper Expedition model, like the
Sport, has an upturned end and it doesn't play well with the flat bottom of
the Sackvilles. The Carradice bags don't have flat bottoms.

The Erlen shape would be better but it would be forced to carry all the
weight and movement of your load because it is not dropped low enough to
put weight on the saddle loops of such a tall bag.

The Nitto bag supports do look less "racklike" when the struts are
connected to the seat stays of your bike
How about a Nitto R-10?

PS. I also have a never used Carradice Expedition QR if anyone has an
interest I sold the Carradice Super C bag I bought it for and as above,
the Sackvilles won't sit nicely on it.

[RBW] Re: Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-13 Thread Scott McLain
I bought Dave's old root beer AHH. It came to me with a lot of beausage,
but no dents. I bought it assuming I would get it repainted. I haven't
done it. It takes a lot of pressure off that it has lots of beausage. The
principal of beausage has changed my life. I did find some clear
protectant to make sure my bike didn't rust where the paint is missing.

My kids all know about beausage now. I rarely buy something that I would
not be able to handle it being dinged.

Except for my Martin HD-28. That stays in the case.

me a year ago. Any idea as to why this keeps happening? The saddle is a
