Yeap, my mistake. A Linux search for mimeTypes.rdf gives 70 results,
65 of which are on assorted Windows drives. As I typed, earlier, when I
got as far as typing mim the Windows Search results field was coming
up empty.

Does Windows only, natively, search the C:?? Nope, cause seven of the

When I talk of doing a search in Win7, I mean entering the search string

I'm not certain, but I think that only searches for installed programs
under All Programs on the Start menu, and for files in your Documents,
Pictures, Music, etc. folders. I'm not sure if it includes AppData, or
other locations. From a quick try on Windows Vista it appears not.

On Windows Vista, when you start typing in that search box a couple of
other options appear above it to Search Everywhere or Search the
Internet. Microsoft's definition of everywhere doesn't seem to match
mine though, as Search Everywhere only searches under my Windows
profile folder (under C:\Users\Mark\), and doesn't even seem to include
everything there! If I click Start, enter name:mimetypes.rdf in the
search box, and click Search Everywhere, it searches in C:\Users\Mark\
but doesn't find anything. If I open an Explorer window, navigate to
C:\Users\Mark\ and enter name:mimetypes.rdf in the search box there,
it does find that file (this may be dependent on having hidden files
made visible, as Paul mentioned).

(As an aside, prefixing the search term with name: restricts the
search to files and folders whose name matches the search term, and does
not search in the contents of files, so may be faster if you just want
to find files with a particular name.)

Lee mentioned a tick box under the advanced search options (from
Explorer, click Search Tools Search Pane, then Advanced Search in
the new bar which appears) to Include non-indexed, hidden, and system
files. There are also more options under Search Tools Search Options.
So there's a few more somewhat hidden options which may affect what's
actually searched! Individual folders can be included or excluded from
the search index, which may or may not prevent them from being searched
at all depending on those other options.

All in all, personally I don't trust Windows Explorer's file search to
look everywhere. Too many options in too many different places, and you
can even select folders to include or exclude from the search index. If
it doesn't find a file I'm expecting to find, rather than assuming it
doesn't exist I tend to fall back to the command prompt as Lee suggested.

All the above is on Windows Vista. There's probably a different set of
complications on Windows 7!

C:\users\your-windows-login-name\appdata\roaming\mozilla\seamonkey\profiles
you can search by typing mimeTypes.rdf in the little box at upper right

Two points on searches in Win7 Windows Explorer:

1) To the left of the search window, extending across most of the
screen, is a pull-down that lets you specify a particular directory (and
all its contents). Unfortunately, the listed items are just recently
visited folders. But each of the elements of the path is clickable. The
default is Computer, which searches everywhere.

A more convenient way to search a particular directory is to begin by
navigating to it in WE, and /then/ enter the search string. You will
notice that the blank search window says Search foldername, where
foldername is the current folder name.

2) To search for hidden and system files, you must begin by unhiding
them: Organize (button at far left), Folder and Search Options, View
tab, enable the radio button Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
The usual warning to clumsy users who might inadvertently delete or
rename such files applies.

FWIW, the search string
mime*.rdf
produced one hit in my SeaMonkey profile and a bunch on my backup drive
(various earlier versions).

It's written there:

   - nor the click of a .doc link asking me if i want to open it with

that relation written at another place than in the helper applications
list ?

The question is : What should we do to have the needs to write to this
file ?

On the Win7 I downloaded a pdf and at the prompt checked 'Always do

Becasue your OS knows that's the executable to use for .doc files. SM
gets the mimeType info from Windows.

The question is : What should we do to have the needs to write to this
file ?

I don't have a mimeTypes.rdf file either, yet Helper Applications is
fully populated with info. I assume perhaps the devs decided they don't
need the file since they get the info from the OS. On my out now so I'll
have to investigate later. Bugzilla search would be a good starting point.

mimeTypes.rdf

Note the 's'.

Note also:

discreet adj. -- careful and circumspect in one's speech or actions,
especially in order to avoid causing offense or to gain an advantage;
intentionally unobtrusive. e.g., a discreet cough.

discrete adj. -- a) individually separate and distinct; b) consisting of
distinct or unconnected elements (noncontinuous); taking on or having a
finite or countably infinite number of values (digital is a type of
discrete coding, opposite of analog, which is continuous).

A discreet file would be one that doesn't make its presence known,
that flies under the radar, so to speak. And if you can't find it, that
may be what you have. ;-)

get the second screen asking where I wanted to save the file, *nor*
did the Download Manager open up!!

Ho! Hmm!! Is there anyone else here that uses both Windows7 (WOW64)
and Linux (x86_64) and is willing to try downloading the Linux version
using their Windows7 version?? Q, maybe??

I had done this with my windows 7 pro 32 bits - User agent: Mozilla/5.0
(Windows NT 6.1; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0 SeaMonkey/2.26.1
and i downloaded
seamonkey-2.29b2.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.29b2/contrib/seamonkey-2.29b2.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

with a single click, and i have the choice of the download directory.

Sorry, Ray, just to make it absolutely clear to me,

1. At Edit_Preferences-Browser-Downloads, under When saving a
file do you have Always ask me selected, and,

YES

2. When then clicking on the file link above, do you mean you got the
small window giving you the option to Open with . or to Save
File, and then selecting Save File, you get another small screen
asking where on your hard disk you want to save the file??

YES, and then YES also.

Well, why isn't my system doing that??? Grrr!! :-(

Thanks for trying, Ray

Close SeaMonkey, go into your profile folder and * rename *
'mimeTypes.rdf' to mimeTypes.rdf_bak. Restart SeaMonkey and then try the
link. You should then get the popup allowing you to select always ask.
In the newly created mimeTypes.rdf file you then should find an entry
similar to this:

   /RDF:Description
   RDF:Description RDF:about=urn:mimetype:handler:application/x-bzip
NC:alwaysAsk=true
NC:saveToDisk=true
 NC:externalApplication
RDF:resource=urn:mimetype:externalApplication:application/x-bzip/

Thanks for this suggestion, NoOp, I'll give it a go later in the week.

Daniel

settings are for zip files.

Ed, in my Linux set-up, I have Always ask selected for Bzip
archive,

Gzip archive and Zip archive file.

I expect the settings are the same for Win7, but will actually check
tomorrow.

Tonight I'm on Win7 using SM2.29b1 (I've already d/l'ed b2) and, as I
suspected...

1. At Edit - Preferences - Browser - Downloads, I have Always ask me
where to save files selected, and,
2. At Edit - Preferences - Browser - Helper Applications I have Bzip
archive, Gzip archive and Zip archive file types set to Always Ask.

Just in case, you know, you never know, I'll set Edit - Preferences -
Browser - Downloads to the other setting, close SM, and then tomorrow
I'll re-download Linux SM2.29b2 and hope it goes to the Download
folder,
then I'll reset to the Always Ask setting, re-boot SM and try
again.

;-(

Here I am, having re-boot SM and downloaded Linux SM2.29b2 again. This
time I had SM set up to save Downloads to the Download folder, which I
did *and* the Download Manager opened up, as it should, to
show me

the downloads progress.

Now I'll re-set to Always Ask and see what happens. :-)

Re-boot SM, went to
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.29b2/contrib/

and, sure enough, with the Always Ask pre-selected, I *did not*
get the second screen asking where I wanted to save the file, *nor*
did the Download Manager open up!!

Ho! Hmm!! Is there anyone else here that uses both Windows7 (WOW64)
and Linux (x86_64) and is willing to try downloading the Linux version
using their Windows7 version?? Q, maybe??

I had done this with my windows 7 pro 32 bits - User agent: Mozilla/5.0
(Windows NT 6.1; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0 SeaMonkey/2.26.1
and i downloaded
seamonkey-2.29b2.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.29b2/contrib/seamonkey-2.29b2.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

with a single click, and i have the choice of the download directory.

Sorry, Ray, just to make it absolutely clear to me,

1. At Edit_Preferences-Browser-Downloads, under When saving a
file do you have Always ask me selected, and,

YES

2. When then clicking on the file link above, do you mean you got the
small window giving you the option to Open with . or to Save
File, and then selecting Save File, you get another small screen
asking where on your hard disk you want to save the file??

YES, and then YES also.

I'm sorry if it seems I'm asking the same thing over and over again,
but I think English is not your first language (but you do pretty good
with it!), so I just want to be sure!!

But on the Helper Apllication, i did not have an entry for Bzip.

Bzip and Gzip are two Zip formats that I've only seen used on Linux. I
don't even know if Windows can handle them at all!!

I Downloaded your Linux format file under my SeaMonkey under
windows 7
and SM let me choice the download place ...

1. Right-click the file name and choose Save link target as.

Yes, Ed, I know this is a *possibility* , but the way I normally do it
is to double-click on the file that I want to download, have a screen
open which gives me the option to either Open with or Save
File. If I select Save File and then click OK, I usually get
another screen allowing me to select where I want the file saved.

On Win7, I do not get this Location screen, but I still do in Linux!!

So, Ed, I am not suggesting that there is no way to download and
save a
file, *just that the/my normal way of doing it is not possible* for me
on Win7, ATT!

  2. Edit - Preferences - Browser - Helper Applications. Find
either
Tar, bz2, or, maybe Winzip. Click. Choose Always Ask.

Not trying to achieve this, Ed.

How about Edit - Preferences - Download. That's where you can set the
behavior for when you click on a file.

Sorry, Ed, I don't have Edit - Preferences - Download ( ;-) ) but I do
have Edit - Preferences - Browser - Downloads set to Always ask me

just commenting that if I had, then the file should have gone to
Downloads as suggested.

Well that's odd. The only thing that comes to mind is that perhaps you
have some addon that tries to redirect downloads to a third-party
download manager.

I suppose that's a possibility, Neil, but I cannot recall adding any
add-ons recently, in either Win or Linux, so cannot see how or why my
situation has changed.

Following on from Ray's suggestion, I'm thinking of changing to Save
file to Downloads, download something and then change the setting
back to my normal. Can't hurt!!

In my SeaMonkey, I see the behavior you describe with the Save files

If I switch them I do get the possibility of selecting where the file is

Yes, I could have done that, but .
a)I didn't have to Right Click in Linux, it gave the little
screen, and,
a)something did get downloaded in Win7, as it was, just that I
couldn't decide where to save it (so I could then move it to my Linux
install.)

I gave you the steps to fulfill your requirement -

No, Ray, you didn't solve my problem, but you did provide a work-around.
please follow it -

and Don't expect that windows will work like a Linux machine - and
vice-versa.

Ray, I would *never* expect Linux to behave like Windows, but I would
expect SeaMonkey to behave like SeaMonkey!!

I couldn't decide where to save it --- Why did you not be able to save
the file in your prefered directory ? Is it so difficult ? If the
directory you want is not present, create it.
Simply like that.

I couldn't decide where to save it because Windows didn't give me the
option to save it to a particular place, it just started saving it
somewhere.

Neil has given me a setting to check, so I'll check that and report back.

When I click on the link above, and select to download the 37MB file, I

Sounds like you don't have Always ask me where to save files selected
in your Windows version.

In my SeaMonkey, I see the behavior you describe with the Save files
to option selected.

If I switch them I do get the possibility of selecting where the file is
saved.

Well that's odd. The only thing that comes to mind is that perhaps you
have some addon that tries to redirect downloads to a third-party
download manager.

The last time I upgraded it just downloaded into Seamonkey, I
restarted and it was done. No file saved. But I have in the past
actually downloaded the file and installed it as a separate step. Did
it upgrade your Seamonkey?

I couldn't decide where to save it because Windows didn't give me
the option to save it to a particular place, it just started saving it
somewhere.

Neil has given me a setting to check, so I'll check that and report back.

OK, i understand.
I have checked ... here in my SeaMonkey under Windows the neil idea:

In Preferences - Browser - Downloads there's an option to automatically
save to your last downloaded folder. You need to change it back to
always ask you where you want to save files.

And i have always ask option checked.

You said: I would expect SeaMonkey to behave like SeaMonkey
Perhaps your SeaMonkey options under Windows are not the same as your
SeaMonkey options under Linux.
That would explain why your two SeaMonkey did not work exactly under
thei respactive os.

Because the default setting for the storage location in Edit
Preferences Browser Downloads is to safe to the Downloads folder of
the OS. If you switch that to Always ask... then you will get a dialog
