Hi Olusegun,

I second, third and fourth to a million agree with you whole heartedly. When
I found out these companies get funding from the government. I was really
annoyed as well.

I too will never subscribe to jws and stick with window-eyes till I can't

I'm in your boat, brother! I won't ever purchase any app that's
subscription based even if the cost is 50 cents a year! Sounds horrible
but
I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though
I
received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it
is

still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the
latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with
something called Back Stage and how to disable it. Yikes, make an app
better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get
this

done.

I'm interested in knowing whether or not the laws in the books can be
invoked when it comes to dealing with adaptive app and equipment
companies.

Look at Humanware; it created the BrailleNote Touch and deployed a
deprecated copy of the Android OS on it; it still sells for more than
$5,000! How about HIMS? It claims to run on Android 5.1.1 which will
soon
become deprecated as well. And it sells for $6,000! In both situations,
no

path for an upgrade and, worst still, the freedom Android offers is
nonexistent. Example: In Android Land, you can install and use your own
preferred TTS engine. What nonsense if I dare say so!

For as long as is possible, I shall continue to look at products in the
mainstream. As I slowly KISS WINDOWS goodbye, I won't have to worry about
the shenanigans of screen reader developers for this OS! I will not pay
one

cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Until my WINDOWS machines all die
naturally, I'll STICK WITH WINDOW-EYES which still PUTS SOME GREAT FOOD on
my wee, small table!

Sincerely,
Olusegun

Hi Lynn,

My apologies if the names I called those at the top of the tree in VFO
offended you. My sheer anger and frustration has overwhelmed me. It is
rarely I make such statements and more so on this list. I've never been so
angry or upset at a situation where blind people will be forced to pay much
more than they are just now. Please believe me it won't be the same price as
now. That I can guarantee. Just look at the price of Microsoft windows 365
office. Remember, that is not just for one or two years. that is for life.
When we bought a copy of Office that copy lasted and will last for years.
I'm still using a 2007 copy of office on my windows 7 machine. If I had paid
a monthly subscription for that length of time. I could have bought at least
8 copied of office.

I could say a lot more Lynn regarding the merger and subsequent demise of
Window-eyes. Call it conspiracy theory or not. Had this happened in the up
they would have been referred to the Monopolies commission. I don't
apologies for using those names because that is how I feel towards them.
Them meaning those at the top. Not the employees. I am not normally this way
about things and don't easily get annoyed. People that know me would agree
with that. I hate to see blind or disabled people getting ripped off and
treated the way we are.

I recently learned that companies who produce adaptive technology for the
disabled and blind get government grants. How much I have no idea. I have a

I recieved an email this morning and it informed me that jws is going to
become a subscription based product. Now it all makes sense, getting rid

the opposition first. No or very little competittion. This will be
interesting how it is going to work?

I'm not going to say how I feel inside but needless to say corrupt, evil

Hello Lists,

I was cleaning out my emails and ran across a bunch from GW-Micro staff
and various list posts. Made me feel kinda sad. It's been around a year
since our beloved Window-eyes went the way of DOS and Word perfect. I
still have my win7 machine but use the replacement provided by the
conquerer because I need to get used to using it. Actually, I don't even
get on the computer much. I'm using FF 52.?? and am hoping Mozilla makes
FF 57 and beyond accessible again. I usually use my phone and am
considering getting a tablet with a keyboard but wonder how safe they are
from viruses.

Anyway, I read a lot of the posts on these two lists and wanted to let you
all know I'm still around, not that you really care, and that I still miss
Window-Eyes and the wonderful staff at GW-Micro. Still wonder where they
all went and hoping the best for them and all of you listers.

What browser are you using? It might be interesting to see if others on the

I use window eyes, too, but I have been having a problem with window eyes.
It doesn't read some kinds of email correctly, specifically the ones that
come from yahoomail. Some lists are on yahoo. It jumps lines. One time
when window eyes stopped talking and I had to have them fix it for me,
they downloaded it from there and the problem went away. But after that,
I had to reformat my hard drive, and when we downloaded it from the disk
and got the updates, it went back to its stupid reading problem. Also, it
will suddenly lose focus and go silent. Otherwise, I would use it
forever. I'm using it right now. Pam.

BJ,

Wow, I put this message aside until I could go to the Outlook calendar and
check the options and then completely forgot about it. I apologize for
that.

Unfortunately, some behaviors of Outlook vary from version to version, but
she should try the following.

Go to the Calendar folder. I press ALT-Y, arrow to calendar and press
ENTER.

Then bring up the "View" tab on the ribbon. I press ALT-V, but I believe
this did not work for a while. Usually, one can also press the ALT key to
bring up the ribbon and press the RIGHT ARROW until one hears "View."

Then press TAB to Arrange By and press ENTER. There will be a number of
buttons for different slices of time such as "Day", "Week", "Work Week",
and

"Month." Even those these may be announced as buttons, the view that is
currently chosen will say "Checked" with the corresponding button. TAB to
"Month" and press ENTER and see if that changes the view back to what she
wants.

I hope this helps and that it gets her close enough to get it working as
she

would like.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Richard,

I missed part of this thread, but if you are not receiving email that you
believe you should be receiving, the Focused In-box "feature" was
probably

turned on by an Outlook 2016 update. If you tab around the message list
screen, you should find a button that says "Other In-box." If you press
that you should get to the normal in-box. If this is the case and you
want
to turn that feature off, go to the "View" tab on the ribbon and uncheck
the
"Focused In-box" option. It may be identified as a "button" but it will
say
it is checked when it is on. When the Focus In-box feature is on, your
in-box will contain the email Microsoft believes you want to read first.

Hi BJ,

The Fire tablet comes with VoiceView. My only problem with it is trying
to type in edit boxes. You can use a USB keyboard with a little USB
dongle, which I purchased from Amazon for around $5. BlueTooth keyboards
work also. If you can't do something with the keyboard, you can do the
gesture on the tablet. There are lots of things that can be done.

Be as it might. Apparently there must be something that causes WinEyes
to have its hickups, on certain systems. Could we trace the health
issue, we might be able to remedy the WinEyes disease. Smiles.

Just for the fun of it, in Firefox under Help, try pressing Enter on the
item that says:

Health Report.

What do you get there? Should give you some technical information.
Likely nothing important in this case, but just to see if it at all
could tell anything for further tracing. It at least would report if any
of your Add-ons have caused Firefox to get an aching toe. In such a
case, offering it a donut and a cup of coffee for free, might cheer it
up a bit. Smiles.

Sorry for not being of all that much help, and hope you don't mind my

Yet, a few days ago, we had a discussion running here, as to the latest

I did not have any intention in running into accessibility issues, and
hence told my Firefox never to update. It is done under tools, Options,
Advanced, and choose the update tab. Nevertheless, this morning when
starting my Firefox, it still updated itself. I got the message on the
screen, that the update was taking place, and though I could say a few
things about a setting in the Firefox options, which apparently is
nothing but useless - I had no choice but to let the update complete
itself. My reasoning was that first it insisted on upgrading, I could
always roll it back afterwards.

When the upgrading was finished, I checked under Tools, Help, About -
and the current installation says

  Firefox 56.0, 32bit.

I now have used it for a couple of hours, browsing around, and do
see no
trouble with this version of Firefox, along with the latest (and last)
version of WinEyes, that is, version 9.5.4.

I do recall there has been a few comments about the 64bit version of
Firefox from the past. And hence i was wondering if the users who told
us not to update to the latest Firefox, due to their accessibility
issues, would happen to be running the 64bit version.

As an alternative, in attempting to see a reason for some experiencing
trouble in latest version, I do wonder if there could be a focusing
issue. Would any of you, who initially reported the loss of
accessibility in Firefox 56, maybe want to try the following.
1. Open Firefox, and go to any website.
2. Press Alt-D, as in Delta.
3. Press F6.
4. Try navigating the website.
Are you still unable to perform any action on the page? If so, check
under Help/About,and see if you are running 64- or 32bit version.
Please
note, a 32bit software can be run perfectly well on a 64bit machine,
but
you cannot run a 64bit software on a 32bit computer. Most computers now
aday, are 64bit machines, and yet, often you are encouraged to run the
32bit software, due to the 64bit technology being more vulnerable for
technical issues.

This is no attempt in advicing anyone, in their choice of browser or
version. I am just curious why some have reported their systems facing
issues, whereas my system had none. Could it even be there was
something
going wrong in your updating process? Or, could it be due to some of
the
add-ons you have installed under Firefox, and which no longer are
up-to-date, due to the new add-on policy of the Mozilla group? Try
starting your Firefox with all Add-ons disabled, and see if that solves
any issues.

Really, it would be bad, should a number of users ditch an otherwise
good browser, or abstain from updating, due to some misunderstood
accessibility issues. That's why, I decided to report my findings,
hoping to hear from others who could shed further light on what
possibly
could cause issues for some. Perhaps we even could help them solve
their
issues, and have them back up running the Firefox browser again

accessibility issues. That's why, I decided to report my findings,
hoping to hear from others who could shed further light on what possibly
could cause issues for some. Perhaps we even could help them solve their
issues, and have them back up running the Firefox browser again; even
with last version of WinEyes.

Here is the link to their web site. They have reduced it even further. You
can subscribe a month at a time or yearly. Annualy is of course much

Hi Dennis,

It is called Nord vpn. When I first installed it. The accessibility was
almost non existant but it is around 95 per cent accessible now. I contacted
them and they have done everything to help with accessibility. It costs $45
or thereabouts per year. I know there are free ones out there but I like
this one.

Re: firefox 55.03

2017-10-01 Thread bj colt via Talk

Hi Bryce,

Unfortunatly I had to do a search on google for older versions of firefox.
My drop box isn't working or I would have uploaded the previous version for
you.

I did install it and its working fine with w.e.
It really is straightforward. Go to google and type in older versions of
firefox. The page is easy to navigate. Either tab down or press h till you
get to the link for downloading the previous version. The download should
start right away.

I haven't found where to uncheck the box to stop firefox updating
automatically. When I do I will let you know how its done.

Hi

I'm puzzled as my friend lost all use of firefox yhet today he is using it
normally. I don't know if he got someone to reinstall a previous version or
not.

I can't use it but am tempted to go back to the previous version. It stopped
working Thursday.

Yes n v d a and jws do work with firefox. I'm not sure why window-eyes
doesn't. Then again from memory. I think this happened in the past with
firefox and window-eyes. I will report it to firefox just in case they can
resolve the situation.

Re: New Window-Eyes Group, How dumb!

2017-07-23 Thread bj colt via Talk

Hi Peter,

I and the majority of window-eyes users on and off this list will continue
to use wondow-eyes, till it cannot be used any more.

I switched over to jws and continue to use window-eyes simply because I find
it a much superior program. Even though it is dead. Yet Confuscious say "
How can window-eyes be dead if app have been updated"? Because it still
lives.

Again VFO could close this group instantly and without prior warning.

It would make far more sense to study up on NVAD, Narrator for Windows 10,
or VoiceOver for the Mac and iPhone and give their developers useful
feedback.

Hi Chris,

If you have been keeping up with the posts from aisquared. You will notice
that the app updates have been suspended. Even though there has been apps
updated recently by a list member. I think the person who created the list
is being cautious. I certainly don't trust aisquared or VFO. They could
easily close the list at a whim, with no notice, Then where would we be.

Let's face it Chris they have been anything but honest and sincere in their

Re: accessible Kindle bookreading software

2017-06-06 Thread bj colt via Talk

Hi Kevin,

I use the kindle accessible version with window-eyes but it works much
better with nvda.

Let me know if you need any help? Download the app from amazon but you will
get a direct link using google.

When it is downloaded. you have to register it with amazon. That was a
little tricky and honest I advise you to use nvda for that. There are built
in voices which arent too bad.

I prefer it on my I phone but the pc is fine. You have to buy some kindle
books, or if you have a prijme membership with amazon you can read specific
kindle books for free. Be careful you don't unknowingly sign up to a monthly
paid version of kindl download.

If you use torrent sites you can get loads of kindle books. there is also a
program where you can convert kinlde books to microsoft word, e pup and
other formats.

Well, I guess I’ve fought it for as long as I can. I’ve refused for several
years to consider switching to a Mac, but with the apparent demise of Window
Eyes, and Jaws sucking as it always has, I’m going to be making the switch.
I’ve been a loyal WE user since 2004, but it seems that it’s time to teach
an old dog new tricks. lol. I can take my I phone or my I pad mini and have
no problem using programs like Netflix, Slink, and other websites using
Voice Over, that WE and Jaws say hey can’t because the sites aren’t
accessible. I think I’ll keep one of my Windows PC’s with WE on it just so I
can look back and think of all the money I spent just to be left with my
thumb up my nose. When I think of the money I’ve spent maintaining a screen
reader, and now the built in screen reader with the IOS works great with all
those websites that were called by tech support for Jaws and window eyes
“inaccessible”.. I know I may catch some flack for this, but it’s the truth
none the less.I guess VFO thinks they’ve cornered the market on Screen
readers, but I refuse to do business with them, because of who they are and
who they are connected with. I started out with Windows 95 and JFW back in
1995, and I used Jaws up untill 2004 when a friend of mine and myself
started building a web site, he was a WE user and I a Jaws user. I couldn’t
do some of the thing with jaws and Freedom Scientific’s tech support told me
it was because the page builder I was usin was “inaccessible”, but my buddy
with Window eyes could do it. I started using WE to work on the website and
as I got used to it I began using is more and more for other things. I found
that WE worked “out of the box” with more programs than Jaws did. So, in
2004 I became a Window eyes user. now I’m sad to say that the same type of
thing has happened, except this time is between Window eyes Windows and
Voice Over and Mac. I will be buying my first Mac in a couple of months and
telling WE and Windows goodby.

Re: Window-Eyes app for Reaper released.

2017-03-06 Thread bj colt via Talk

Hi Tom,

I've been working with reaper for a few weeks and can say it is fantastic.
It was working perfectly till yesterday and everything went crazy.

I kept losing speech when opening reaper. I had set up the steinberg
interface. It worked fine until I unplugged it. Speech would freeze when I
loaded reaper. That was using window-eyes, nvda and narrator.

I uninstalled w.e nvda and tried each one seperatly. The same result.
silence. I did hear error opening device when loading reaper.

I uninstalled reaper, osara, sw plug in and tha ausio drivers.

When I now load reaper, I still get that error message but no loss of
speech. I can't play any tracks. When I press control and spacebar I get
stop. No play or pause. Simply stop.

The other problem is that when I install the reaper w.e app it isn't in my
app list. It tells me it is installed but I can't find it anywhere.

Any ideas you might have to help, please let me know. I checked the audio
settings and they appear to be fine.

I have no idea why the reaper app is not showing up in w.e.

Kim,

Reaper costs only 60 dollars for an individual license. But you can
download and install it and it will be fully functional with nothing
more than a purchase reminder that pops up on launch.
It works fine on Windows 7 with Window-Eyes.
It is a full blown multi-track recorder like Sonar.

Here's what you need to get started.
Reaper.
http://www.reaper.fm/

The OSARA accessibility extension. Go to the ReadMe heading and read
that section. Then go to the download and install heading and read that.
You should bookmark that page or the download link because you'll need
to check for updates yourself. They're pretty frequent. So check back
every couple weeks.
https://github.com/nvaccess/osara

The SWS/S extension. It's not required but very helpful.
http://www.sws-extension.org/

And here's a link to the Reapers without Peepers mailing list page where
you can subscribe. It's a very helpful list.

Good luck,
Tom

The app is really an interconnect for Window-Eyes and OSARA, a MSAA

sendspace and firefox

Hi List,

I have a problem with firefox and Internet explorer. both latest builds. If I
press enter on a link in an email to sendspace to download a file. It works
fine. In other emails when I press enter on the similar link firefox rejects
the connection. It seems to be because of some kind of invalid certificate that
sendspace has. Because of this the sendspace page won’t load.

I reset firefox to default settings but no difference.

Anyone have any idea?

2016-12-18 Thread bj colt via Talk

Dear List,

It is only natural to speculate about a program, most of us have used for a
long time. In truth it isn't the fault of list members but that of VFO and
~Ai squared for not posting something positive about what is happening with
Window-eyes.

It really is as simple as that. If the list is being monitored by A I
Squared staff and or maybe VFO staff. A slight hint, a positive message
would go a long way to quell everyone's thoughts. I studied Public Relations
at University and all I can say is that. This is the worst Public Relations
I have ever come across to date. #No matter what happens this will affect
both AI Squared and VFO for a long time to come. I truly don't understand
it. One thing for sure is that, i'm glad I am not doing any Public Relations

I've been using window-eyes since 1998 and like the majority on the list,
been a 100% loyal user. Stuck with the product through thick and thin. The
staff always gave their best, every single one of them. Window-eyes at the
moment works as good as it can and I have very few problems with the latest
update.

The customer support at gwmicro was always excellent and I always got the
help I needed and so did friends of mine who use window-eyes.

No upgrade is perfect, there will always be some problems but gwmicro and
aisquared always did their best to get as good a product as possible.

I like many will continue to use window-eyes till it stops working. Then I
will probably go to nvda. Certainly not Jaws. I'm unsure if VFO can make
that trade off with anyone who has an s m a. I know the laws here in the uk
are quite strict and I would expect to get my money back in full. If VFO
only gave the option of using the s m a's towards a purchase of Jaws. Even
though I am in the uk. There are long distance selling and buying
regulations that have to be adhered to.

The simple fact is that we bought one, two or more s m a's for the specific
purpose of purchasing the appropriate ammount of full upgrades of
Window-eyes. Ifthat is not possible then the money has to be returned in
full. There is no arguements about that. Or there shouldn't be. However as
VFO has a reputation regarding finances. Then they will take a chance but
will loss, like they lost the legal dispute with gwmicro.lol

Not sure what you meant by "wished to provide", like they didn't provide
good service and a good product. They did wish to provide good
customer service, their customer service was always top notch, and I've
known Doug and Dan for a long time and their goal was to provide good
products to the blind community. We don't know what went on behind the
scenes, and the bills must be paid. They never had the market share
that freedom had, (in spite of freedom's poor customer service), and
freedom taking them to court, I'm sure, set gw micro back finnancially.
Believe me, I'm as sad as any one to see them get gobbled up by freedom,
but to insinuate GW Micro didn't do a lot for the bllind community and
that they were in it just for the money just isn't so. I ran my own
business for many years, and although it had its rewards, it can get
difficult at times.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I have a lot of their products around
that have made my life easier and more fun and I'm thankful for what GW
Micro accomplished over the years, and did for us.

Re: Future of WE

2016-11-27 Thread bj colt via Talk

Hi,

As far as I am aware aisquared are no longer selling s m a's. In an email
from someone at aisquared a few months ago. The person sending the email to
asquared asked if s m a's could be purchased and how much they were. The
aisquared person stated that the cost of an upgrade was $49 but did not
mention s m a's. Leading me to believe then that window-eyes was not safe at
that point.

I keep a very slight hope that window-eyes will survive but all the signs
say it won't. A good Company with a good Public Relations office would have
kept window-eyes customers up to date with internal events in VFO. Sadly
this company hasn't, neither has aisquared. It is the lack of information
that is the problem. Taking into account dealers being informed that
window-eyes and related products will no longer be on offer after December
the first is extremely worrying. Add up all the negatives one does get an
idea window-eyes will be discontinued. As there are absolutely no positives.
What else are window-eyes customers to conclude. All down to both VFO and
Asquared for not keeping us up to date. As window-eyes customers we have the
right to be informed about the product we have loyally supported for over
two decades.

I must admit, the Future of Window Eyes does look like it could be very
limited, as in soon to be Discontinued. But, who knows for sure. The
Parent Company might be slow and Cumbersome which makes them slow to do
anything that gets back to the customersSlow to announce new stuff,
slow to bring out Updates, slow to Fix problems etc.

I too am starting to use NVDA a bit more. On my System, NVDA is just a
touch slower, and I am still not understanding it way of reading parts
of

the screen, at least not consistently.

email, MS Word and the Internet all seem to read well enough. Some
times

 a
bit too much is spoken, and I am still learning how to make NVDA speak
 less.

And to be fair, NVDA is not Free, but you can obtain it for Free, use
it,
and if you like it, then the owners and creators of NVDA would love to
see

 a
Donation come their way. Money does motivate the continued improvement
of

 their product.

If more money had been coming into GW Micro, then A I Squared would not
have bought GW Micro. and this discussion would never have taken
place.

I doubt if any of us would work for Free indefinitely. And the guys
who have put NVDA together would not put in so much effort into NVDA if
 they
did not receive enough to make it worth their time and energy.

The thing about NVDA is that you can donate $50 and the guys will be
grateful. $50 is cheaper than $1300 for JAWS.

NVDA doesn't do everything JAWS does, but to be honest, I do not need
NVDA to do everything JAWS does. Each person will need to find out if
NVDA will do everything they need it to do. If it doesn't, and we all
 find
out that Window Eyes is truly Dead, then those needing more will need to
start saving up for their copy of JAWS, whether they like it or not.

I have two programs that NVDA will not read. Window Eyes will read one
of

them, and when JAWS 18 has a Demo, I intend to try it, to see if it
will read both of these programs. If it does, against my will, I will
need to purchase a copy of JAWS.I might object, but if I wish to use
these programs, then I have no choice.

Time will tell what the Future of Window Eyes will be, and whether or
not

 we
each need to see what we can find to replace a decent and respectable
 Screen Reader.

There are other choices than NVDA and JAWS, although, I know nothing
about them. And since I rarely hear of them, I assume they are not
all that good.Maybe some of you here have experience with some of
the other choices in Screen Readers?

Hi Grumpy Dave,

I have a better suggestion. You still purchase your Kindle books.
Instead of using the Amazon Kindle app, you can convert your files to
another format of your own choosing by using a program called Codex. I
am placing the link here. The program allows one to convert .pdf,
.epub, .azw or whatever file type the Amazon books are in, and other
formats from one to another. For example, you can even convert a .docx
to a .txt or .rtf. It is pretty easy to use and it can be run in the
Windows Explorer, at least on Win7 machines, through the context menu.
You set your default file type for output and when you select convert,
your file is automatically converted to the file you requested. There
is also an option to choose another file type without changing your
default. For example, you found a magazine article you wanted to read
quickly..save it as a .txt and read it quickly. So, finally, here is
the link:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5121410/Codex-2.0-setup.exe

Oh yes, I used it yesterday and was informed there is a newer version.
You can update it directly from the program.

Carol

new oe program responce from them

2016-09-09 Thread bj colt via Talk
Hi list,

Below is the responce I recieved from Customer support of oe2. I think they are
saying it will take a long, long, time for it to be made accessible for us.

We are aware that OE Classic has issues with screen-readers for certain
controls. To avoid technical explanation, we are aware that these controls
need a Accessible Name which is something what is built into Windows (more
recent versions such as Windows Vista or more recent) but unfortunately,
they are fairly recent and are not implemented to the level of all Windows
controls which OE Classic uses. So we have to add support for this name in
controls - there are a few methods to do this and we examined them for a
while.

For now, this is in To-Do list. As we are fairly small team, it will take a
while (possibly even a good while) before we start addressing these issues.
We have been testing it with NVDA and we found that some controls behave
really poorly, while others behaved surprisingly well (mostly buttons and
checkboxes). I have added you to the notification list so when we make more
progress toward that goal I will notify you - but it will be a while before
that happens.

gold wave set files

2016-08-31 Thread bj colt via Talk
Hi,

I am also having a problem with gold wave. I may be doing something wrong but I
can’t find the gold wave set file in the factory set files section in the w.e
control panel.

I uninstalled w.e 9.5.1 and then reinstalled it. I only have w.e 8.4 which is
an electronic download so I installed that version. I then installed w.e 9.2
and then w.e 9.5.1.

In w.e 8.4 I was able to find the gold wave set files and there seemed a lot
more set files in that version. In w.e. 9.5.1 there seems to be only 22 set
files.None of them related to gold wave.

When I open gold wave and then press control backslash, it opens the w.e
control panel but there are no associated files with gold wave.

How do I associate the gold wave files and where do I get them from? I did
install the Gold wave enhanced app. No keyboard commands speak, nothing.

drop box problem

2016-08-27 Thread bj colt via Talk
Hi List,

I downloaded the latest build of drop box a few days ago. When I tried to
install it. It went through the process but then it got to “Drop box set up”
and just stayed there. I couldn’t read anything on the screen, nothing. No next
button, nothing. I tried maximising the screen, using the tab and shift tab,
using the numberpad. No joy.

Is there a problem on my side? I’m using a Samsung laptop, 500 gig hard drive,
2.8 ghz pentium processor, 4 gig ram. Windows 7.

In the start menu, drop box is there, when I click on drop box, it opens up the
screen as above”Drop Box set up”. and hangs there. It appears installed in
programmes and features. Something wierd going on.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi everyone,
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be part of the Window-Eyes
community for the past 7 years. So, it is with a heavy heart that I share
this news. Today is my last day working for Ai Squared. I was made a job
offer that was too good to refuse. As much as I love my current job, this
was the best decision for my family. Next month, I will start my new job as
a Senior Accessibility Specialist for JP Morgan Chase. This position will
give me the opportunity to help Chase further their mission to build
inclusive digital experiences for all of their customers. If you would like
to stay in touch, feel free to follow me on Twitter. I don't tweet often,
but when I do, I usually distribute information on digital accessibility and
assistive technology. My handle is mr_marcsolomon. As a final thought,
please continue to educate others about the importance of accessibility and
do what you can to help make this world a better place.

Re: Interesting fb post

2016-01-11 Thread bj colt via Talk

Hi Terry,

While I did read braille, speech has overtaken that method of reading. When
I did my Hon BA Social science course. I read hundreds of books. I mean
hundreds. I scanned in every single one of them. Reading them in braille
would have taken me abgout 40 years. My fingertip senses have reduced
dramatically because of playing the guitar and neuropathy from Diabetes.

I could never go back to braille. At one time I did read 60 words a minute.
Which isn't fast, maybe between mid and high but not fast. Some people could
read it fast. However for the deaf bllind 1,000 dollars is something else.
Or for those who prefer braille. About time the price was brought down. Rip

Today, blind people fluent in Braille can read computer screens s

through refreshable displays that convert words to raised dots – but

only one line at a time.

For the sighted, imagine a Kindle that presents just 40 characters per

page, says Sile O’Modhrain, an associate professor of Music, Theatre

and Dance at U-M, who is blind. Forty characters amounts to about 10

words.

The process is slow. It doesn’t give context. It’s expensive. And

O’Modhrain believes it's one of the factors contributing to Braille’s

declining use. Even though fluency in the nearly 200-year-old code is

linked with higher employment and academic performance for the

visually impaired, fewer blind people are learning and using it.

Taking Braille’s place are text-to-speech programs that make it easier

and faster to consume electronic information, but at the same time,

hold back literacy.

So O’Modhrain, who is also in the School of Information, has teamed up

with engineering researchers to build a better Braille display – one

that could show the equivalent of a whole Kindle screen at once. In

addition, it could translate beyond text, rendering graphs, charts,

spreadsheets, maps and complicated equations in a medium the blind

could more fully understand with their fingertips.

“What we’re trying to build in this project is full-page tactile

screen for something like a Kindle or an iPad where you could just

display refreshable text in real time,” O’Modhrain said. “Relative to

what’s done today, and how that’s done, it’s a complete paradigm

shift.”

In the 1950s, about half of blind children learned to read Braille,

according to the National Federation of the Blind. Today, that number

is just 10 percent. Yet 80 percent of the blind people who are

employed know Braille. Those numbers don’t tell the whole story, as

definitions and health outcomes have evolved over the years. But the

trend they suggest is real.

“When you’re learning to read and write, it’s hard to find a

substitute for physically encounter text – whether it’s in visual or

tactile form,” O’Modhrain said. ”There are many studies that show that

listening to something is not the same as reading it.”

The system she is developing with Brent Gillespie, an associate

professor of mechanical engineering, and Alex Russomanno, a doctoral

student in the same department, would make e-reading for the blind

more efficient and a lot less expensive. Today’s commercial one-line

Braille displays cost around $5,000. If you were to directly scale up

the mechanism behind it to show a whole page, it would cost around

$50,000, Russomanno says. The U-M researchers’ aim to offer that

capability at just $1,000 per device.

How can they make a bigger display at a fraction of the cost? Their

answer is microfluidics – a branch of science and engineering that

involves specially etched chips with tiny channels that guide flows

of liquid or air. Microfluidic chips are modeled and made like the

integrated circuits of computers. They are printed rather than

assembled.

“We use the equivalent of electronic logic and circuitry,” Russomanno

said. “When I say that, I’m referring to the way a computer works,

with transistors and resistors, except ours is not electronic at all.

It’s fluidic. Instead of high voltage and low voltage you have high

pressure and low pressure, and instead of electric current flow you

have fluid flow and you can achieve the same basic logic features.”

And like the 0s and 1s that undergird computing, Braille is a binary

code. Each Braille cell (which is sometimes a letter and sometimes a

whole word) contains six dots that can be either raised or flat to

convey different information.

Michigan engineers have developed technology that may soon lead to a

refreshable braille tablet the size of a Kindle.

“The dots are either there or they’re not,” O’Modhrain said. “That’s

why this circuit is so elegant.”

With just two input valves, the

windows live mail problem

2015-02-20 Thread bj colt via Talk
Dear List,

I have a major email problem and unsure where the exact answer lies.

I sent an email to a friend yesterday and somehow within the email was an exact
copy of a reciept from Amazon, sent to me on the 31st January. It was situated
after my email to my friend and followed by emails to my friend running in that
normal sequence.

I've also had problems regarding trying to send emails. Often when I am either
uploading or downloading and I try to send an email. I get an error message
saying the message cannot be sent as the file attachment is too large. I
haven't added a file attachment. Yesterday I got another error message saying I
had not enough memory to send an email. Once my upload had finished I was able
to send an email no problem.

The situation is a little worrying as my private address and personal details
might be sent to anyone, not just friends.

I'm certain this is not a window-eyes problem. Has anyone any idea what the
problem might be?

It just doesn't make any sense.

Similarly, on the guardian newspaper web site, I hear references to my google
search of months ago. Not recent searches. This is certainly wierd. I know
that at one point I was informed by gwmicro that this extranious chatter was
caused when I copied and pasted some web content to a word document.

I haven't done that in the past 4 months.

If anyone can give me any idea's as to why these things are happening, It would
be very much appreciated.
