Re: Filters working in v5?

2012-06-17 Thread RS (FEDARA)
Hi Vilius,

Another problem with IMAP is that the messages have to actually be
 kept on the server.

DC that's not the problem with IMAP, it's the beauty of IMAP. It's the
DC whole point.

This also goes into another philosophy: Do we want to keep our own
data or do we want to put all our eggs in one cloud whose keepers we
have to trust. The mods will slap us soon for off-topic discussions.

Even if using POP, how would you know if mail server
admin doesn't forward all your messages internally to his account?

If you cannot trust your mail provider it doesn't matter if it's
 IMAP or POP.

I think that the matter here was not a leak of information but rather
a trust that person on the other side is reliable as a professional
should be and won't make mistake while backing up and storing your our
data.

Such mistakes happens even to the best and as far as I remember couple
years ago there was a case of AOL (if I'm not mistaken it was AOL)
where they lost main data and back-up data of their customers.

Anyway, not looking too far away, an example of TBBETA list shows that
such thing can happen even to people that are rather pros.

I do keep my back-up on two BD disks about 3 times a year (different
brands) and do try to back-up TBK archive to another HDD once a
month as well as I do save all sent/received e-mail as EML and my OS
auto sync it daily to my third HDD at night).

There is one more thing I do, 2-3 times a month I do upload encrypted
with 7ZIP EML to European remote computer (used by my parents).

Chances that all backups die at the same time (especially the one on
remote computer are slim).

Why so many HDD backups and a remote backup?
Within last 4 years I had 3 HDD that died (two of them almost
simultaneously ; all of them were below 2 years old) and I had to buy
new ones...

If I loose all of this backups I will be the ONLY to blame :)

What I ment was a cost that your provider would charge you if you
re-download all data if you have IMAP (I use it on two computers so
would be x2 ; plus my FTP upload/download charge). Anyway, if I keep
all of that data at my provider's server it's more than a storage I
have there :)

As for HDD:
Have three 2TB HDD (2xWD, 1xSeagate ; so far all good (about 1.5year ;
on 24/7 about halt time of the year)), one 1TB (Seagate) (about 3
years old ; on 24/7 whole year ; OS HDD ; unfortunately started making
strange noises last week).

As mentioned in previous e-mail: one WD, one Seagate and one Samsung
died within last 4 years.

It depends how you have configured IMAP client, but usually the client
asks the server:

What new messages do you have since I last time checked?

The server responds with something like this:

I have 25 new messages with IDs 150,151,152,etc.

The client then downloads message *headers* to list them in the
mailbox on the client.

After the the user can decide which messages he needs and download
manually a whole message.

No. With POP I can set the machine to download the messages and

times with even slower internet connections). Then everything is on my
computer and I can work fast.

With IMAP I have only the headers on the computer. I want to open a

I used to have a phone that downloaded messages by POP, but that is
nonsense. My iPhone uses IMAP and I only download the headers. Mostly
I can judge from the subject line whether I need to read the whole
mail and then, whether I actually need to download the attachments.
This is very different from the normal working environment: The phone
is a crutch I use when I am travelling and do not have access to my

IMAP will be faster because you can specify which parts you can download.
Headers, text part, html part, attachments, etc. And then later manually
initiate full download only on specific messages. This especially useful for
server-side Sent Mail folder, where you only sometimes need a full message.

If you use a VPN to a trusted server in EU/US, aren't you better off
leaving you email on the trusted IMAP server so if you do loose your

I do appreciate that some unlucky people have a real need to protect

within reasonable time.

TC for me is rather to protect me when laptop is lost than to try to
hide data from police (no matter if I think they have right to spy on
us all the time ; ex: Google Drive, Dropbox, TuneIn, VoIP connection
software on my Android phone and many more are already blocked in
China because police can't control moved data). It's one of the
reasons why apart of protecting my data against ordinary theft I do
try to protect my privacy :)

IMO hidden volume can be detected in the container even if you
cooperate with police - there will be a size difference of data copied
to a container and container size (unless I'm mistaken here).

IMO, much better to claim plausible deniability is encrypting a raw
clusters on the HDD (ex: external). In that way data on such HDD looks
like a rubbish without any structure nor readable header to see what's
there unless you know the password or a keyfile. Each time you connect
such HDD to your system Windows is reporting unformatted drive and
asks to format it.

As for AES hardware encrypted USB it's possible that you might not
know the password if ie. your kid for instance changed it long time
ago :) Life is life ;P

TO If you use a VPN to a trusted server in EU/US, aren't you better
TO off leaving you email on the trusted IMAP server so if you do
TO loose your laptop again, your email is easily recoverable?

First is the size (over 6GB database), second is that I can do the
same with TBK archive copied in TC container and burnt on DL DVD.
Actually I have all e-mails doubled because every e-mail I sent and
receive is saved on HDD as EML and I do make copies of it. I do burn
on DVD TC containers so even if somebody gets it they can't read it.

Last thing is that I do not have much trust in IMAP and leaving your
data on some server ; even big companies lost customers data due to
mistakes - you can call me old fashioned here but if it's lost I can
only blame myself :)

I do appreciate that some unlucky people have a real need to protect
themselves from serious danger and to leave as little trace as
possible. My TB installation on my laptop is password protected and 'On
the Fly' encrypted. Any idea how secure that is?

Sorry, I don't know. I would love to know what encryption is used by
Ritlab. As for now I use non-encrypted TB! installed on separated
TC container and it works good for me.

I used on-fly-encrypted version first I installed TB! but had to
switch to none-encrypted due to some problems I had with it (don't
remember now what it was ; reported it on BugTraq but it's gone now).

Tried to use Voyager that is on-fly-encrypted on my 32GB USB but it
didn't work good. I mean here that Voyager worked good but sync to a
my desktop failed 3 times in a raw so I just gave it up.

At the moment I just use TBK to move it between laptop-desktop if
I need to travel.

Just picking this post to throw in another argument for POP you guys
may not be aware of: Slow internet connection.

I just came back from a province in Northern Thailand where my only
access to the internet was GPRS (not even EDGE). So, I set TB! to
download messages, and went to have breakfast. After that, all
messages where on the computer, I could read and reply.

With IMAP, only the headers would be downloaded. For each message and
especially their attachments, I would have to download while waiting
in front of the computer.

Argument in favour of IMAP: I use IMAP on my iPhone. So I download
only the headers when I'm travelling, reducing international roaming
charges. If there is a message I need to read, I open that one only.

However, this is not useful at my PCs, as I need to download all
messages an attachments anyway.

Re: Filters working in v5? (Securing your hardware) :)

2012-05-01 Thread RS (FEDARA)
Hi Raymund,

RA if your mail is that interesting to an attacker he/she/it will
RA find a way to get it from your computer as well...

You're right in your statement but cost vs value is a question here :)
In my case no one will try to get my data ; way too much work to do :)

1. True Crypt Encrypted HDD (Serpent-Twofish-AES with SHA512 hash)
and encrypted not with a password but SHA-512 keyfile,

2. Keyfile could be stolen so it's on hardware AES encrypted USB
with small/capitalized letters and digits (3 wrong passwords and you
can only format it ; unless Sandisk included some backdoor in it :)) ;
I do have 2 copies of such USB in separated places of the world (and
I'm the only person that knows where it is :)),

3. Notebook camera is set to facial recognition and if I'm gone for
about 2s it locks down and my face and password are required to get an
access (only drawback here is a need for decent light conditions).
Password is not a word but mixture of small/capital letters and
digits.

4. USB ports are turn-off and not accessible up to the moment you
Unlock them after plugging in a USB drive.

5. All my portable HDD/USB are TC encrypted with keyfiles.

6. Password on BIOS
That one is only to slow common thieves down and not to get HDD
formatted within first 1-2 hours after your notebook is gone.

7. E-mail clients and browsers are set up to connect to Internet over
encrypted VPN ; have that option enabled as well for a whole OS (two
reasons here):
a) Higher security (as I never had enough time to dig up a matter of
e-mail encryption ; anyway if I'm not mistaken recipient must to do
some work on his end as well and probably most people would not be
able to do that properly)
b) I'm in China and amazingly quite often connecting to US/EU server
even through EU VPN is faster than direct connection from China (no
comment here) and more stable (no Time Outs ; before on Chinese
cable connection I had sometimes up to 90% of time out from time to
time),

There is one more option in my notebook BIOS: Computrace but I didn't
dare to turn it on because as per info I've found it can't be turn off
by a user (remote company must reset your notebook) nor uninstalled
from BIOS after it's set active (if BIOS is reflashed it's repairing
itself).

Why to do that?
My previous notebook was once stolen and had only BIOS protection so
data were fully accessible if HDD is taken out and connected to other
machine. However, that BIOS saved HDD from being formatted before I
luckily found it and bought it back.

At least make them not be able to read your data or sweat while trying
to access it ; if you're not lucky enough to get it back fast enough
:)

The message base is not local.

If an attacker is in possesion of mail server it doesn't matter if
it's IMAP or POP. He will still be able to read your new email. IMAP
is just a protocol to get email from the server. It is no more or less
secure than POP.

Using POP3 and thinking that you are somehow more secure is completely
ridicilous idea. If you need a security encrypt your email base (be it local
or on the server). Most of the modern email server can do that.

Hi All,

 1. True Crypt Encrypted HDD (Serpent-Twofish-AES with SHA512 hash)

Mistyped here ; I wrote OS but meant other containers.
OS is AES encrypted with a password and containers are
Serpent-Twofish-AES encrypted (mounted separately). All data are set
to non-OS partition but to separated container mounted as a drive
after OS is up (ex: TB!'s data folder).

Keyfiles and Containers headers are saved on AES hardware encrypted
USB (headers are to be used if something happens to the container ; so
far never had to use them (luckily)).

Rest of the info was correct. It's about 2am here now and it's
probably a high time for me to get to bed.

just a short answer, its ~6am and work calls ;).
I case of 2 POP Accounts a made a backup of everything. After that i
uninstalled TB!, delete the folder and installed the latest 4.X

After that i restore only POPAccounts and setup IMAP completely new.
Testing arround and setup latest 5.X.msi and get the *.26.18 over it.

I suspect the cause to be in base format differences/upgrade
procedures. After upgrading TB through a path developers didn't
anticipate (or through buggy versions), MB may have some internal
data in an invalid state that causes auto-filtering to fail/be
   disabled regardless of settings.

solve that problem?
Intall all new from scratch? Could be a problem, if you import the old
database i guess these filters are inside that.

What do you mean by pathing? We did only change a little bit an
algorithm that checks whether a move destination folder's name is
valid in the dialog window that selects a destination folder for move
or copy filters. We didn't change anything in the code that actually
moves or copies messages. The change did only apply to the GUI part.

Re: Filters Process Out of Order

2007-12-21 Thread MAU
Hello Steven,

Sorry for such a late reply but I haven't been looking at the list
lately.

Is it already a known issue that the filters are not being processed
in order (from top to bottom) of the filter list?

No, it is not a know issue and I don't think it is even an issue at all.
I have been using quite a number of filters and quite extensively for
years and I have never even suspected filters were not processed in the
right order.

The sixth filter in my list deletes all messages that have :SPAM: in
 the subject.

That's what _you_want_ your sixth filter to do and what _you_think_ it
should do, but it is quite evident from what you say that it isn't
doing many times. Why don't you copy (select the filter and Ctrl+C) and
past it in a message here so we can take a look at it?

The 68th filter in my list moves all messages that do not have the
'X-Text-Classification' header into a folder named 'unclassified'.

What anti spam tool/plugin are you using to include :spam: in the
subject or the 'X-Text-Classification' header? PopFile perhaps?

My unclassified folder currently contains 1836 messages, 1237 of them
 have subjects beginning with :SPAM:!

From this I gather that if your anti-spam tool/plugin includes ':spam:'
in the subject it will not include a 'X-Text-Classification' header,
correct?

Looking at the log shows that, for some reason, some of the :spam:
messages are not matching the 6th filter, but instead are being
 processed by the 68th!

I think the word 'matches' that you use may be the clue. Is your filter
using a 'Subject _matches_ :spam:' condition? If so, have your tried
'Subject _contains_ ...' condition?

Aside of that, are you using account filters or global filters? If
global, are you using several accounts and sharing ALL filters with all
accounts, specially you sixth (:spam:) filter?

Hopefully this will be fixed VERY SOON.

Oh, and if it is not a known/open issue, let me know and I'll gladly
add it to the bug tracker.

TB has many bugs, but I am quite sure this is NOT one of them.

I did some further research. When I select
 match
 or
 Match all as Regular expression
instead of contains, then YOUR filter also works. 9Val was right.

I tried it with a filter @ritlabs.com for folder Ritlabs contains, match
all as regular expression and match doesn't work. And this for incoming and

Sorry, but I don't know how to do this. Must I not have an account for this?

If not, maybe an other filter gets your mails before this

In regular version, message is flagged an moved to specified folder.

In OTFE version (both with passw and token) message is flagged, but is
stored in Inbox, not in specified folder. Something is strange,

Hello TheBat Beta List Members!!!

Someday, and that was in Monday evening, Peter wrote something like
this:
MM Who did experience a trouble that filters and OTFE work in Password mode
MM and don't work with hardware tokens (iKey or eToken)?
 Me.

Me to.

The .63 serie is completely unusable here.
.63.09 does not recognise my database at all and prompts me whether
I want to create a new account or import a previously backuped one.
.63.08 DOES recognise my database but ALL filters are disfunctional
and it needs 5 MINUTES (!) to import 20 messages for tbbeta, all of
them are stored in the INBOX afterwards. (See eMail to 9Val,
including log snippet.) In addition sent messages remain in the
OUBOX and are flagged as UNSENT, even if they had been sent
 successfully.

Fully confirmed.

 All this with iKey.

With eToken Pro.

MM How can we reproduce this?
I have not the foggiest idea ;) 3.62.14 works like a charme!

Not in my TB. I have problems with new message templates in common
folders. Don't recognize %To macro. When common folder template have
%To specified and all rest is in Address Book in tbbeta contact when I
want to create new message all fields must I manually fill. See
attachment - commonfoldernew and contactnew.

I have also problem with %Charset Macro - didn't work for us-ascii.
For example all tbbeta messages I have in common folder with reply
template %BLANK. In Address Book I have reply template for tbbeta
contact like in attachment. My win is XP sp2 and like you see message
is in win1250 not us-ascii. BTW win1250 is not enabled in encoding
list in TB config. For example when I change in template ascii to
utf-8 everything is fine.

Hello Marck,

Okay - let's bring this one up again. I just added an OR condition
to an old filter and messages that used to be intercepted by that
filter ended up in my spam bucket (unfiltered).
Looking deeper, I find that, starting today and since making that
change to that one filter of adding the OR condition, 3 other filters
with OR conditions suddenly stopped working where they were working
 perfectly for months.
They work neither automatically on mail receipt nor manually.
Can anybody confirm this? A pretty serious bug IMO.

I know, you are not a rookie, but is not it possible that you dont
have Continue processing with other filters checked? So the modified
filter catches more mails now, that is the cause of the inactivity of

POP. There's a surprise!

This was the original filter:

And now this one's come up non-functional too:

,--/ TBList admin message filter \--

Before I made the change to the underscore filter, everything worked
perfectly well. (Except, of course, the message creation filters still
not fixed in BugTraq report

Not even slightly. Nothing to do with the problem. The filter I
changed was a sub-filter of a group of filters used to pick up list
mail from the various lists. It is *not* and never was a continue
processing filter and doesn't need to be.

V So the modified filter catches more mails now, that is the cause of

It's the *changed* filter that fails, not the rest. I'm saying that
not only does *it* now fail, but that it has dragged a stack of other
filters into the duff pot with it! :(( The other filters do happen to
be in the same group. There's probably a clue in there.

What it is really about is that the Lists filter had become a
continue processing filter, which it should not have been!

I have now re-enabled the spam trap filters and turned off continue
processing on the Lists filter. I really didn't turn that on. It
became turned on when I made the change I spoke of at the start of

Yep that is checked. (Don't ask it gets complicated)
So the message can get caught by both filters.
So I ask again which one should move it when it gets caught by both.

ASK IIRC, the message is a fixed object during the filtering stage. If both
ASK filters move the message, you should have two copies in the two
destination
ASK folders (I haven't tried that however).

No. The keyword for the filter here is move, not copy. The message
is an object in computer-speak, don't know what a fixed object is.
Filter 1 moves the object (message) to the spam folder, filter 2 moves
it to the list folder. So it ends up in the list folder only, there
are no two copies (unless you browse deleted messages, but we won't go
into this). He would have two copies has he told the filters to copy
 instead of move the message.

ASK Maybe thats a topic for TBTECH?

No, rather for TBUDL. It's not a very technical question, every user
has filters like this so it's rather basic, and it's not a beta issue either.

I have a filter for friends and one for lists. It is possible for a
message to get caught by both.

ASK To avoid that, I've set up my filters for mailinglists as subfilters.

How complicated. The more straight-forward solution is to *not* check
continue processing If you are not sure and get too many false
 positives, recalibrate your spam filter.

The reason that I put it here is because filter activity was changes some
time ago, and I was wondering if it had changes again.

Neither do I, therefore the quotation marks.

to the list folder. So it ends up in the list folder only, there are no

Ah OK, my mistake, I remembered the old discussion how a message can be
moved twice from the inbox to another folder and again to another folder,
so a move is not really a move until all filters are done... I mixed it
up.

ASK To avoid that, I've set up my filters for mailinglists as subfilters.

None of my filters continues processing. It was just an example how to
avoid Davids problem.

The subfilter method is not complicated, on the contrary - the message
doesn't have to go thru all the filters (for every mailinglist). If the
parent condition isn't met, they're simply skipped. And I can collapse the
list of all my mailinglist filters in the sorting office, which leaves a
much better overview.

I'm (very seldomly) suffering from a glitch where messages are not
filtered. Its not colour group related (or rather: I can't say, because I
have other actions defined). Manually re-filtering the inbox works, so its
not the filter that isn't working, its as if certain messages slip thru the
mechanism that triggers the filter for new messages. Or something like
that.
