Hmm, it seems to me as if there is only an one way interface in TB.
Under

Account / Sorting-Office / New

you can set up a filter which either saves the mail as a file
or passes it (the mail) to an external application (Actions
tab). But I still can't find the other way of passing it
(altered) back to TB.

Is there one or is there not? Any further discussion depends on that

That depends on your attitude towards the Selective Download

headers, then check for any unwanted messages and then download
the whole e-mail (including the headers again). So if you receive
100 messages, the headers will be transferred 2 times, or 200

Check PGP signature

2001-04-29 Thread ad

Hi,

I've already post that problem a while but as I got no answer and saw a
new faq, here it is again :

so on pgp help page i found :

To decrypt an encrypted e-mail message from The Bat!, use Check PGP
signature command from the Tools menu. If the message is signed, PGP
automatically checks its signature validity. Note that the message is
NOT stored so you need to decrypt it this way each time you read the
message.

But when I click on check pgp signature, It asks for my passphrase and
... nothing !
So i'd like to know what happens to you, I hoped a window opened with
my message decrypted or something like that.

thanks for help

To decrypt an encrypted message you need to use the decrypt command. Go to

appear. Type in your password and hit enter.

The other way to get at the pgp decrypt command is by right clicking on

Yes.

When TB! decrypts a message, it creates a decrypted copy and adds it to
the message list. The decrypted message is indicated by (PGP decrypted)

aen But when I click on check pgp signature,

Checking a signature is really checking the signature in my message here.
This command isn't what you use to decrypt encrypted messages.

Problem checking for multi-account mail

2001-04-29 Thread William Moore

Hello TBUDL,

I have just installed TB 1.51 and am in the process of
evaluating it. Only one problem so far.

I started with one account - everything o.k.
Then I added another five accounts. I will need six
accounts when I switch to TB!

I sent test emails to each account.

I 'got new email' for each account individually - no
  problem

Then I tried to 'check mail for all' but TB! only
checked three accounts. There is no apparent
connection between the three accounts (in fact the
relate to different domains/hosts). All the accounts'
  properties are similar.
I've repeatedly 'checked mail for all' but only the
  same three accounts are checked.

Can anyone help, please. Apologies for the long post.

Worm: What Do I Do?

2001-04-29 Thread Michael S. Greenbaum

I had been (until this morning) getting the list in digest form and
sometimes didnn't read everything, so I just saw this message about the
worm infecting TB!

I have received a number of messages in what I presume is Russian (at
least they are non-English characters) in the last week or so.

I just delete them in the top pane and have not opened any of them, so
I don't know if this alone is enough to protect me.

I went to the web page which told me about the virus, but it didn't
seem to have any specific instructions about how to get rid of it.

Questions (and I apologize if they've been dealt with previously--so
you can answer directly and not clog the list if you prefer):

How do I know if I have it?

If I do, will a virus checker like McAfee pick it up?

If not, what do I do to get rid of it?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks, Peter. I should have caught that, but I didn't.

BTW: The scanning software that operates on my mail servers at home
and at my office catch Stator via its extension pif.

With the amount of this stuff running loose on the Internet, many of
the smaller ISP's are also using software on their servers to delete
these sort of attachments. As more virus scanning becomes common at
the ISP levelthe authors should be easier to catch, also.

Thanks again,

It seems you, and all the others _are_ safe from the worm as
long as we do not open the attachment. Common sense _should_ tell
us that we _should not_ open strange mail attachments, or
unsolicited mail attachments. Those must be investigated, and
generally they get trashed. By investigating I mean, look at the
extension, if they include two, or more extensions then they are
surely malware and should be trashed right away.

No. Marck is just saying that the developers know of the problem and have
addressed it. The fix will be present in the upcoming new release version
 (v1.52).

That still isn't very much OK. They should be able to release
patches on such security threats, and not hurry the release of
the next version, _if_they rush it. I don't think they do, and
they shouldn't, because we want a prime quality mailer. That's
why patches are so useful. They buy you time.

I have been told by Ritlabs that a newsreader will be implemented in

avoid learning another newsreader.

From time to time I import my newsgroup messages into TB!. The
inconvenience is that my e-mails are downloaded twice. With OE5 TB!

BTW does anyone know if OE5 can be prevented from acting as e-mail

 P Hi All,

P I recently learned that Microplanet has stopped development work on
P Gravity, which I've been using for a long time for news reading. I like
P Gravity a lot, but I've been wanting the ability to organize newsgroup
P messages into folders, which was promised for the next version. Now,
P that it's uncertain whether or not there will ever be a next version and
P certainly not for the foreseeable future, I'm thinking about
P alternatives.

P My basic problem is that I subscribe to both a lot of mailing lists and
P a lot of newsgroups dealing with the same subjects related to computing.
P I save a lot of messages from both sources for future reference.
P Retrieving the information, though, is clunky with having to search both
P sources separately and not being able to categorize the newsgroup
P messages at all. And, I'm just tired of having information
P scattered all over the place.

P So, I was thinking that I might switch to using Agent for both
P newsgroups and mailing lists, keeping The Bat! for non-mailing list use,
P but that would be a kludgy workaround. I'd rather find a way to get my
P newsgroups messages into The Bat! So, I was wondering if anyone knows of
P a news reader that would let me save out messages in a format that I
P could import into The Bat!? Or, is it a totally goofy idea?

Zone Alarm Pro would also have stopped this using its

Hello All,

I just wanted to ask about the tagging of time zones in e-mail
headers. I live in GMT, but the headers say +0100. Is e-mail time
measured differently to GMT, or is +0100 a 'tag' for GMT? Thanks for

Have you considered using a local server, such as Hamster

you want English, go to
http://www.elfden.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/hamster/index.html

You could use that, and an add-on called MixGroup (never tried it

Edit the properties of the shortcut you click to launch Outlook

(without the quotes of course).

Outlook Express will now advertize itself as Outlook News Reader. It

So do I. I appreciate the warnings TB gives now, and would like to
have an option to enhance them. For example, would it be possible to
give a stronger or more persistent warning if an attachment has a
double extension (.gif.exe, for example)? This would give an extra
warning to be a bit more careful. I'm sure there are other
enhancements that would help, too.

Some people want only raw speed. If it is an option, those who wish to
avoid the extra popups would not see them if the so wish.

STRONG security and privacy are the most important features of TB, in
my view, and enhancing them would make it even better.

ACM Ok. This is why I decrypt with PGP Tray these days. If I wish to

It has to be said that the recent suggestion of a Read filter which
picks up (pgp decrypted) in the subject of a read message and does a
filter action delete does the job beautifully. No double delete needed
since a filter action delete never touches the sides on the way
down.

For me it makes complete and final sense of the plug-in.

Mind you, you have to set up a filter for each folder in which
decrypted messages might appear, but that's just a quick copy and
fudge of the original filter.

Re[2]: Check PGP signature

2001-04-29 Thread ad

ACM But where is it written that TB! behaves otherwise from what we're
ACM experiencing?

So here is a copy of a page of TB web site :

To decrypt an encrypted e-mail message from The Bat!, use Check PGP
signature command from the Tools menu. If the message is signed, PGP
automatically checks its signature validity. Note that the message is
NOT stored so you need to decrypt it this way each time you read the
message.

Another way is decryption as a message into your message base using
Decrypt PGP... command of the Tools menu. Note that in this case
your privacy might appear as defenceless because the message is stored
in your message base in clear text so anybody else can read it.

The second paragraph is OK for me, but TB! don't behaves like first
paragraph or i really don't understand it.
( to my opinion, it shoud works like the pgp secure viewer)

AVG (was Worm: What Do I Do?)

2001-04-29 Thread Michael S. Greenbaum

I downloaded this AVG program twice, but I cannot find it on my hard drive
anywhere.

The second time, I carefully watched the download complete and noted
the location of the download c:/download.

When I went to look for it, it was not there. I did a search using
the Windows 98 Find function, putting in avg*.* and nothing came up
but a font I have which begins with avg.

I'm using a 500 mghz Pentium III PC with a 10 gig hard drive and 256 k
of ram. I downloaded a McAfee antivirus update this morning before I
found your site, and had no trouble whatsoever.

I've written to AVG but since they have no support, I doubt that I'll
hear anything from them.

ACM This isn't what happens in my usage of TB!. Checking the signature of a
ACM signed and encrypted message simply checks the signature. It doesn't
ACM decrypt the message.

But what TB! does when it checks a signature on a PGP encrypted message is
exactly as advertised. The message must first be decrypted to obtain the
signature... the verification information is presented in the PGPLog, but
the message remains in it's encrypted state. Therefore:

To decrypt an encrypted e-mail message from The Bat!, use Check PGP
signature command from the Tools menu. If the message is signed, PGP
automatically checks its signature validity. Note that the message is NOT
stored so you need to decrypt it this way each time you read the

depicts exactly the way TB! behaves when you check the signature on an
encrypted message. OTOH, if you use Tools/PGP/PGP Decrypt then TB! will
check the signature *and* leave a copy of the decrypted message.

Tom's original question was:

But when I click on check pgp signature, It asks for my passphrase and
 ... nothing !
So i'd like to know what happens to you, I hoped a window opened with
my message decrypted or something like that.

If he wants to do both... check the signature *and* decrypt the message,
then he must use Tools/PGP/PGP Decrypt. Choosing only Tools/PGP/PGP Check
Signature will do exactly that, but even to do that, PGP must use your
Private Key to decrypt the message to get at the signature, which is why
it asks for your Passphrase. The reason it didn't leave a decrypted copy
as well is because that was not asked for. No? Yes?

NA But what TB! does when it checks a signature on a PGP encrypted
NA message is exactly as advertised. The message must first be decrypted
NA to obtain the signature... the verification information is presented
NA in the PGPLog, but the message remains in it's encrypted state.
NA Therefore:

NA To decrypt an encrypted e-mail message from The Bat!, use Check PGP
NA signature command from the Tools menu. If the message is signed, PGP
NA automatically checks its signature validity. Note that the message is NOT
NA stored so you need to decrypt it this way each time you read the
NA message.

NA depicts exactly the way TB! behaves when you check the signature on an
NA encrypted message. OTOH, if you use Tools/PGP/PGP Decrypt then TB! will
NA check the signature *and* leave a copy of the decrypted message.

I see what you're saying but what is written on the web page is still
misleading. If a TB! user says that he/she wishes to decrypt a message,
what do you think they mean, and what would you tell them to do? I'd tell
them to use the PGP decrypt command and explain how it works, assuming
that they wish to decrypt *and* read the message.

If they ask how to verify a signature, I'd tell them to use the check PGP
signature command and add that the command works with encrypted and
signed messages as well. However, for encrypted messages an unencrypted
copy isn't created in order to simply verify the signature. I don't quite
know if someone would wish to only verify the signature of an encrypted
message and not decrypt and read it as well.

This is why PGP so clearly makes their command, decrypt and verify.
There's no verification only command.

Jan, just out of curiosity, what do you mean cannot install it.? The RAR
Archive will only contain the executable file... which is copied directly
to your existing TB! Folder, and allowed to overwrite the EXE file that is
already there.

Later on in your message though, you state that WinZip claims it's an
incomplete file. Have you tried downloading it again, but this time use
WinRAR to extract the file? Shouldn't make a difference though, as long as
your copy of WinZip can handle RAR extensions.
